Gold sun, green valleys & black coffee

You can tell Jamaica is unique from its national flag – it’s one of just two that excludes red, white and blue. Its bold coloured symbols represent the sun, the land and its resilient people. Venture on a Jamaica holiday to explore a real-life Fern Gully rainforest, bathe in pools fed by waterfalls and get swept away by spirited music. Sway to the island’s rhythm at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival, Ocho Rios Jazz Festival and Carnival.

Sun and sand are ‘musts’ on the Jamaican agenda. Kick back on the bountiful prime beaches, such as Seven Mile Beach in Negril and the more petite Doctor’s Cave Beach. Cool off on the waves with water sports – or grab a mask and snorkel to peep at the vibrant reefs and varied marine life. The ocean isn’t the only azure feature, either. Blue holes make popular swimming spots, and a trek up the Blue Mountains will provide vistas of the north and south coasts.

You may not pass for a local on the streets, since most Jamaicans are native-born, but you can still soak up the culture. Nip to the National Gallery of Jamaica and the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston. For a more laidback induction, satiate your stomach with scrumptious dishes, like ackee and salt fish or curried goat, accompanied by smooth rums. Book your flights to Jamaica and savour the country’s exports of Blue Mountain coffee and Red Stripe beer in their homeland.

Jamaica holiday FAQs

Make the most of your jamaica holiday.

Some Jamaica hotels host a surplus of activities. However, some of the best holiday experiences are awaiting just outside of the resort. Grab suggestions from our Jamaica ‘things to do’ list to enjoy a dash of the local lifestyle.

What are the best things to do in Jamaica?

1. Have you gotten spoiled by the gorgeous beaches around the island? Mix up your swimming routine with a trip to one of Jamaica’s blue holes, near Ocho Rios. Take off for Irie Blue Hole in the morning before it rains, and reward yourself post-trek with a refreshing plunge into the teal pool. Some visitors jump in from a rocky ledge or drop from a rope swing – but you can descend more gently. Cash will come in handy if you would like to purchase water shoes, order food from vendors or hire a local guide.

2. Bob Marley’s wife converted the musician’s former home into a museum – and it's unsurprisingly the most frequented site in Kingston. Fans of the world-famous icon can cram in knowledge about his life and career during an hour-long Bob Marley Home tour, which will take you past his gold and platinum records and media clippings. You’ll also get to see his bedroom, left as he kept it, and his personal effects. Before you go, stop in the museum’s gift shop, record shop and One Love Café.

3. Sometimes drinking is associated with silliness, but clever spirits enthusiasts can get clued in on rum at Appleton Rum Estate – the nation’s largest and oldest distillery. Head to Nassau Valley for the lowdown. You can inspect everything from the sugar cane fields and the molasses they yield to the rum’s aging barrels. After a trip to the tasting room, savour a cocktail with a meal at the lounge and bar. Alternatively, grab a limited-edition rum from the gift shop.

4. Yes, you can bobsled in tropical climes, a la ‘Cool Runnings’. The Jamaican Mystic Mountain Adventure Park gives you a chance to careen down a thrilling 1000-metre track amidst the treetops. Race full-throttle or hit the handbrake to slow your speed. You’ll take a 15-minute chairlift ride with astounding views of the forest and Caribbean Sea to arrive at the attraction. Once you finish your trip down the track, catch your breath at the infinity pool, hummingbird garden and cultural centre.

5. Kickstart your day by summiting Jamaica’s highest point, Blue Mountain Peak. (It’s more than just a coffee brand.) The prominent geological feature stands 2256 metres tall, so you’ll have to start early if you want to arrive in time for sunrise, since the seven-mile ascent takes roughly four hours. Still, you can hike any time of day. You’ll be rewarded with views of Buff Bay and Kingston on a clear day – as well as a shadowy indication of Cuba.

What are the best places to visit in Jamaica?

When in Jamaica, you’ve got to experience Kingston. It’s blessed with a captivating coastline, as well as inviting views of the Blue Mountains. Like most capital cities, Kingston offers opportunities to experience the best of the nation’s art and culture. Hang out Downtown to peek at the historic buildings and artwork within the National Gallery of Jamaica – or head Uptown for a breezier vibe.

It’s no secret that you’ll find the very best beaches in Negril, including the famous Seven Mile Beach. Venture to the very western tip of the island to chill out among brilliant white sands and turquoise waters. You can stay right on the beach or stop in at one of many beach bars for sundowners. Port Antonio, on the other side of the island, offers swimmers the unique Blue Lagoon, an oasis of piercing aquamarine waters, surrounded by greenery.

The formerly quiet port town of Montego Bay is not far from Negril. It is frequented by travellers for its harbour and beautiful beaches. Golf courses and nightlife have become part of the tourist scene, too. Try to time your visit with a yacht race – or the massive Sunsplash reggae festival in August – for extra fun.

Ocho Rios is another village that has bloomed in popularity throughout the years. The rainforest surrounding Fern Gully offers a nice shady respite – and tours often pair it with a trip to the impressive 600-foot Dunn’s River Falls. (James Bond fans will recognise this as a scene where ‘Dr. No’ was filmed.

Which holiday type in Jamaica is right for me?

The best hotels in Jamaica are just waiting for you to arrive. However, you’ve got to decide whether you want an all-inclusive holiday to Jamaica or a cheap holiday to Jamaica. Either way, you can book a good value trip.

The all-inclusive  Couples San Souci  is geared towards romance. While you can spend time together lying on the sandy shores and dipping in the mineral grotto and spring pool, you can also bond during activities. Or you can opt for a similar experience in Ocho Rios at  Couples Tower Isle . At the adults only  Secrets St. James Montego Bay  you'll enjoy a breathtakingly beautiful oceanfront setting and some of the best dining on the island.

Plenty of Jamaica resorts cater for families, too. For instance, the  Grand Palladium Jamaica  has one of the largest pools in the Caribbean and offers a jam-packed schedule of activities such as water polo and beach volleyball and live music every day. While grown-ups can also enjoy expert mixology classes, poker games and slot machines.

Culture and customs.

In addition to its beautiful beaches and flavourful food, the people of Jamaica are an inherent part of the country’s appeal. Their friendly nature, sense of humour and colourful banter are hard to resist. Even Jamaican Patois, a mix of English and African languages, has a charming, almost musical air to it.

As the birthplace of reggae and dancehall, music plays an important role in Jamaican culture. Historically linked to Rastafarianism, reggae was used to express spirituality and bring awareness to social and political injustice. Look no further than Jamaican icon, Bob Marley, who sang of ‘One Love’, to see this relationship at play. Gospel sounds are an integral part of church, while West African folk songs pepper daily life. Hand in hand with music is dancing – energetic and mesmerizing, few can resist swaying to the beat when island ‘riddims’ (rhythm in Patois) are played.

Spirituality is also highly valued in Jamaica. Home to more churches per square mile than any other country, about 65% of the population is Christian, while the rest adhere to Hinduism, Islam, Judaism or various African religions. About one percent of the population follow the Rastafari philosophy, which seeks to recapture and celebrate African heritage. Despite being a small group, followers have left an indelible stamp on the country and their movement has spread to other parts of the world.

Eating and drinking

Many of the flavours and spices found in Jamaican food come from the Spanish, British, African, Indian and Chinese populations who inhabit the island. Taking advantage of the natural bounties at their disposal, Jamaican dishes feature plenty of fish, tropical fruits and produce. While the local cuisine has a reputation for being fiery, those with lower spice thresholds don’t need to worry as there are actually many dishes and snacks that don’t have chilli peppers. Meat dishes feature heavily in the local diet – jerk chicken, curry goat and oxtail are some of the more popular dishes – yet many Rastas believe adhering to a vegetarian or vegan diet is an important part of their faith, so a wide array of options for vegetarians is usually available as well.

Nothing is more quintessentially Jamaican than a plate of jerk chicken with rice and peas. Be aware that most Jamaicans eat their meat well done, so proper jerk might be drier than what you’re used to. Side dishes are usually vegetarian and include plantain, a sweet tropical cooking banana that is sliced and deep fried, and callaloo, a staple Caribbean green. Slightly bitter and nutty-tasting, callaloo is often steamed and lightly seasoned with green onions, garlic, thyme and coconut oil.

For a cheap and satisfying snack, nothing beats a vegetarian or spicy beef Jamaican patty. Available everywhere, Jamaican patties are similar to an empanada and get their golden hue from turmeric. Roadside stands selling boiled corn, roasted yams, soups, fried fish, coconut water and various tropical fruits are also easy to find.

In addition to coconut water, skyjuice (shaved ice covered in fruit syrup) is a Jamaican favourite sold by many street vendors. This drink is best avoided, however, as the ice is not always sanitary. Luckily, Jamaica has plenty of other refreshing options to quench your thirst instead, like various types of rum punch or Red Stripe, a local Jamaican beer. If you’re after a java jolt, coffee harvested in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains is full-bodied, exceptionally smooth and among the rarest and most expensive coffee in the world.

Must-try foods in Jamaica

1. Curry goat

A staple across the Caribbean, this slow-cooked savoury dish is packed with flavour. Chunks of goat and potato are simmered in curry powder and various other spices until it’s thick and tender.

2. Rice and peas

Rice and peas (which might be pigeon peas, kidney beans or black beans) are simmered in coconut milk, thyme and other spices to create a dish that is simultaneously sweet and savoury.

3. Jerk chicken

This quintessential Jamaican dish gets it’s distinct flavour from jerk spice (a mixture of Scotch bonnet peppers, pimento, cinnamon and nutmeg), which is dry-rubbed into the meat. Jerk pork and jerk fish are other variations worth trying.

4. Saltfish and ackee

A popular breakfast choice, the mild and creamy flesh of Jamaica’s national fruit (ackee) is boiled with salt-cured cod (salt fish), tomatoes and various spices to create a dish that is both sweet and salty.

Geography and environment

Jamaica is a tropical island nation located south of Cuba and west of Haiti in the Caribbean Sea. More than 1,000 km (621 miles) of coastline stretch over numerous bays, keys, and islands to produce some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Calm waters give way to white-sand beaches along the northern coast, whereas black-sand beaches can be found in the west. Miles of the well-developed coral reef is located along the north and east coast.

More than just idyllic beaches, much of Jamaica is covered in rugged peaks, some of which are volcanic. The Blue Mountains and Dry Harbour Mountain occupy the eastern half of the country, descending westward into Cockpit Country, a hilly limestone landscape of ridges, caves, and sinkholes.

As an island nation, shopping options aren’t as extensive as you might find elsewhere. Malls are relatively modest in size and most items are imported, making them more expensive than what you might expect. Your best bet while shopping in Jamaica is to look for locally-made goods. Jamaican rum and coffee are both great choices that can be purchased relatively cheaply at any local grocery store. Though Blue Mountain Coffee may seem pricey, it is still a fraction of the price of what you would find outside of the country. Rum distilleries, like Appleton’s and Hampden Estate, are also a good place to both sample and purchase locally-made rums.

Head to craft markets to shop jewellery and handmade wood carvings, though be aware, many of the other goods commonly found in markets are neither handmade or locally-produced. Harbour Street Craft Market in Montego Bay and ‘Cooyah’ Market in Kingston are two of the biggest markets to practice your haggling skills. ‘Cooyah’ Market also stocks a wide array of Rastafarian clothing, which is typically red, green and gold (the colours of the Ethiopian flag). And of course, Bob Marley memorabilia can be found everywhere throughout the country.

Be aware that US dollars are widely accepted, although technically it is illegal for vendors to sell items in foreign currency. Most places give change in Jamaican dollars regardless of the currency you pay with.

Festivals and events in Jamaica

For many Jamaicans, music is an important part of daily life and inextricably intertwined with their culture and identity, so it makes sense that many of their festivals incorporate their musical heritage. Some of the best ones to keep an eye out for are:

Bob Marley Birthday Bash

Every year, the idyllic beach town of Negril celebrates the life of Bob Marley with a multi-day festival featuring authentic Jamaican music, food, and art. Festival dates vary slightly each year but always coincide with the beloved icon’s birthday on February 6th.

Saint Ann Kite Festival

Colourful and elaborate kites fill the sky over Saint Ann’s beach during the day, while concerts take over during the evening for this wholesome, yet entertaining annual March festival.

Reggae Sumfest

Jamaica’s largest music festival takes over Montego Bay every July. Attracting reggae icons, international artists, and energetic crowds for over 20 years, Sumfest just might be ‘greatest reggae show on earth’ like they profess to be.

Jamaica’s Carnival (Bacchanal)

In the months leading up to Easter, the infectious sounds of calypso and soca fill the air as Jamaica comes down with Carnival fever. Concerts, beach parties, street parades and weekly mas camps take place across the country, culminating in a grand parade in Kingston that rivals Rio’s in the spectacle. Featuring costumed revelers, high-energy dancing, pulsating music and a euphoric atmosphere – Carnival is a must for anyone wanting to experience the excitement and bacchanal of a proper Caribbean fete.

When is the best time to visit Jamaica?

Jamaica experiences beautiful, warm weather all year round, although the risk of tropical storms tends to deter tourists during the summer months. Hurricane season tapers off around November, drawing most travellers to Jamaica between December and March, when the weather is consistently warm and sunny and there is little rainfall. Rainfall begins to increase in April and May, but shouldn’t hinder travel plans. Travel is cheapest between July and October when increased rainfall and sporadic heavy storms become common.

The Internet can be accessed at internet cafes and hotels in large cities but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Regardless of where you are, it’s a good idea to avoid ice, as there is no guarantee the water used to make it was not contaminated. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Grand Baie - North Coast

North of the island, Grand Baie has the reputation of being a party town (relatively speaking; on the whole, Mauritius is pretty laid back).

There are a host of great restaurants, shops and a lively nightlife scene, making it the most popular holiday destination in Mauritius. Not forgetting the bay that gives Grand Baie it’s name - which is the place to head if you’re looking to charter a boat, embark on a dolphin cruise, deep sea fishing or scuba diving excursion.

In short, if you like a bit of buzz with your beach, Grand Baie is where it’s at. Our recommended hotels in the area include Veranda Grand Baie and Merville Beach Grand Baie.

Belle Mare - East Coast

The highlight here is the gorgeous white sandy bay, one of Mauritius’ best beaches. Protected by a natural coral reef, the shallow waters make it a superb snorkelling spot.

Despite being on the quieter side of the island, Belle Mare has plenty going on - choose from golf, watersports or cool off at the family-friendly waterpark. There’s usually a pleasant breeze (very welcome when the sun is hot), which also makes it an excellent windsurfing destination.

Belle Mare is home to several of Mauritius’ high-end hotels including Constance Belle Mare Plage, LUX* Belle Mare & Maritim Crystals Beach Hotel.

Jamaica Holidays

Of all of the islands of the Caribbean, Jamaica is surely the one with the most widely recognised cultural cues. Our Jamaica holidays allow inspired travellers to experience it all first hand. The sounds of Jamaica have graced the world not only through the iconic Bob Marley, but through reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub and the dancehall music of countless chart-topping artists. The island is also famous for its jerk spice and of course the fastest man in the world: pretty impressive for a small island in the middle of the Caribbean sea. Bob Marley fans can take a trip to the village of Nine Mile in Middlesex county, where his story began and where he was later laid to rest. But the sounds, tastes and smells of modern Jamaica are alive and waiting to be experienced too, in cities like Kingston and Montego Bay and smaller towns like Port Antonio. If you’re looking to delve into Jamaica’s colonial past, a visit to the historic centre, Spanish Town, will be a delightful day trip. Jamaica has it all - sun, sea, music and culture.

Luxury Holidays to Jamaica

Many of our Jamaica resorts contain everything you need for an all-inclusive holiday experience, with fantastic pools, spas, golf courses and more. The island of Jamaica is also known and loved for its passionate people, white beaches and the outstanding reefs which await at Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios. Inland, you’ll find dramatic waterfalls, the stunning peaks of the Blue Mountains and plenty of flora and fauna to spot and study around the wetlands and mountain sides. In short, it’s difficult to focus on any one reason to take a holiday to Jamaica: there are just too many! And don’t miss the special-offer prices and direct savings our experts have arranged with our preferred hotel partners in Jamaica, such as our popular Sandals Resorts.

Jamaica Weather

Jamaica's climate tends not to be very extreme, although, because it has many mountains, temperatures may vary dramatically in different parts of the country. Hence, temperatures might drop to 10C in Mandeville, which is 2,061 ft high, while in Kingston, the average temperature is 26 C.  The hurricane season in Jamaica is between July and October.

Things to do

Bob Marley Museum

Bob Marley Museum

The Bob Marley Museum is located in Kingston at 56 Hope Road - the legendary Jamaican singer's former home. The house, featuring 19th-century architecture was Marley's home until his passing in 1981. Six years later, the building was converted into a museum by the musician's wife, Rita Marley, to display his personal treasures and achievements.

Don't miss out on a tour of this historic residence, which also features a theatre, a photographic gallery, a record shop and a gift shop. Visitors are also encouraged to stop at the One Love Café for some fresh ital cuisine and juice.

Dunn's River Falls

Dunn's River Falls

Dunn's River Falls is one of Jamaica's most popular national treasures and tourist attractions. The waterfall is based in Ochos Rios and is spread across almost 600 feet. Naturally terraced, the falls are great for climbing and, of course, splashing and swimming in natural pools.

A hiking lasting roughly 1 hour 30 minutes will take you through lush vegetation to the summit with plenty of swimming opportunities along the way. At the bottom of the waterfall, you'll also find the attraction's most defining feature. The falls empty into the sea at Little Dunn’s River Beach, making this one of the few travertine waterfalls in the whole world.

Luminous Lagoon

Luminous Lagoon

Jamaica's enchanting Luminous Lagoon stretches from the small village of Rock to the town of Falmouth. The lagoon gets its name due to the bioluminescent microorganisms in the water, which give off a bright glow  at night, reflecting the movements of fish and other objects in the water.

See this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon for yourself on your holiday to Jamaica. Every night, there are tour boats departing from the Glistening Waters Marina, ferrying visitors around the lagoon so that they can take in the lights. Jump out and take a swim, watching as your body is enveloped by the water's celestial glow.

Caribbean Multi Centre Holidays

Home > Multi Centres > Caribbean Multi Centres

If you’re considering a visit to the Caribbean, a multi centre holiday is an excellent opportunity to get more from your trip. Whether you combine exciting cities, charming old towns and sandy beaches or opt for an island-hopping adventure, a Caribbean multi centre holiday allows you to explore all this stunning destination has to offer. Visit the Bahamas and Barbados for trendy restaurants and luxury hotels, Cuba and Aruba for unique culture, or Dominica and Nevis for secluded, luxurious vibes – or combine elements of all into a bespoke itinerary for a truly diverse holiday.

What are the top destinations to include in a Caribbean multi centre holiday?

The Caribbean is packed full of amazing destinations to include in your multi centre holiday. No matter where you visit, stunning beaches and weather await! Popular destinations across the Caribbean include the Cayman Islands, a collection of three islands known for beachside activities, watersports and wildlife, or St Lucia, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands. Barbados is also an extremely popular destination, famous for its bustling scene, trendy bars and exquisite fine dining. With 365 beaches, Antigua and Barbuda offers an eye-catching coastline wherever you turn. Or, head to Cuba for a fascinating country with a rich history. From its excellent artistic scene, street performances and exciting nightlife to UNESCO World Heritage sites, cobbled streets and natural landscapes, a stop in Cuba on your multi centre Caribbean holiday will ensure a trip to remember. Of course, the top destinations for your multi centre holiday in the Caribbean depend on your preferences, so feel free to contact our friendly team to assemble your dream destinations.

What is the best time of year to visit the Caribbean?

The best time of year for a Caribbean multi centre holiday depends a lot on your preferences regarding weather. Peak season runs from December to April, when you can find warmer temperatures and lower humidity. This peak season is an extremely popular time for tourists looking to escape cooler temperatures in the UK and US, so you can expect larger crowds and higher demand for tourist spots and activities, sometimes resulting in higher prices. May and November are considered ‘shoulder’ seasons, as they sit on either side of peak season. You can expect pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds during these months, although November does fall within hurricane season (which is from June to November) so we’d always recommend checking weather patterns if you’re considering a visit.

What is food like in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean is well known for its excellent cuisine, and if you head here on a multi centre holiday, you’ll find yourself spoiled for choice. Rice, beans and peas are a popular staple and are often cooked with coconut milk, herbs and spices. Jerk seasoning also plays a big role in Caribbean cuisine; look out for dishes such as jerk chicken or pork, which are marinated before being slow-cooked or grilled and served with sides including rice, plantain, festival (fried bread) and coleslaw. Street food options such as ackee and saltfish or patties are great for on-the-go, while seafood dishes like escovitch fish showcase the island’s plentiful coastline.

Hi. 10/10 Just booked our holiday via these guys. This was a highly recommended travel agent. So we contacted them. Told them what I wanted. They were able to beat all the quotes I was about to find. Always quick to get back to me. Will use these guys again.

Hi I’ve just booked a holiday to Vietnam through yourselves, I found Nick to be very helpful with no pressure at all, he answered all my concerns very promptly & efficiently I would definitely book with them again

I cannot recommend Eshores enough. We had a fabulous member of staff 'Lynette', that organised an 8 day tour of, Rome, Florence and Venice. Flights were booked, hotels were booked and trains were booked. The hotels were wonderful and the trains so easy. We cannot thank Lynette enough for organising such a great trip.

We have booked twice now with shores and found the booking experience very easy and nick Chadwick has been exceptional throughout.

First class service from Andy as always. Perfect.

Asked for a holiday between certain dates to Italy, Hannah was very helpful and chose 3 locations that we had asked for as a package,we felt we could do with a few more days added on which was no problem so we now have a holiday to look forward to later in the year, thanks again Hannah.

Super helpful and fully understood my requirements. They found the perfect holiday in no time and at a great price Look forward to you organising my next trip

Always excellent service

If you are looking to plan a holiday, eShores is the place to come. We have just booked a trip in Canada and Lynette could not have been more helpful. She sourced, flights, hotels, cars etc and patiently altered dates, accommodation and activities until we’d got just what we wanted. All of this with no big sales pressure or pitch just a friendly helpful manner. Can’t recommend Lynette and the company highly enough. Thank you

Susan Elizabeth

Kelly is simply the best. I explained the sort of holiday I was looking for and she put together an amazing experience visiting San Francisco and Hawaii. The hotels were fantastic and the travelling between islands in Hawaii was an amazing experience. I then asked Kelly to put together a trip island hopping in Greece, again the hotels were brilliant. the ferries were interesting and everything about the trip worked brilliantly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kelly and eShores

Trudeau's Jamaica vacation cost far more than same trip the year before

Rcmp reports an 'incident' happened at the place trudeau was staying during his holiday.

jamaica multi trip holidays

Social Sharing

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's controversial vacation to Jamaica last Christmas cost Canadian taxpayers far more than his trip to the same destination a year earlier, CBC News has learned.

According to the government's answer to questions posed by Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer, tabled this week, Trudeau's 10-day vacation with his family to Prospect Estate near Ocho Rios cost taxpayers $230,442, a 42 per cent increase over the $162,000 cost of a similar trip over the Christmas holidays in 2022-23.

Trudeau's most expensive vacation to date as prime minister was a visit to the Aga Khan on a private island in the Bahamas, which ended up costing taxpayers $271,000 and resulted in a ruling that he had violated the ethics rules that govern members of Parliament.

  • Trudeau family vacationed with wealthy friends who donated to Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation
  • Prime minister's plane breaks down in Jamaica during family holiday
  • Conservatives call for ethics probe into Justin Trudeau's free Jamaican holiday stay

Trudeau's office initially said that he paid for his family's accommodations during the trip to Jamaica, a stay that some have estimated to be worth as much as $84,000. His office later corrected that to say Trudeau stayed for free at the resort owned by longtime family friend Peter Green.

Trudeau has defended his trip to Jamaica, saying that — like other Canadian families — his family took a vacation over the holidays and stayed with friends, and that all of the rules were followed.

Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein said Trudeau's office consulted his office before he went to Jamaica. He said the rules that govern the gifts and travel MPs can accept make an exception for gifts and travel offered by friends or family.

"What we have here is clearly a generous gift between people who are friends and I don't see why, just because they are well off, they can't exchange gifts," von Finckenstein told members of the House of Commons ethics committee in January during a hearing on the trip.

An image of a pool that overlooks the ocean

According to the documents tabled in the House, the largest single expense for this year's trip to Jamaica was for the RCMP officers who accompanied the Trudeau family.

While the RCMP reported the trip cost the police service $162,051, not including the regular salaries of its officers, it declined to provide a breakdown or say whether its officers paid to stay at the resort owned by the Trudeau family friend.

This year's Jamaica trip also made headlines because the Canadian Armed Forces plane that brought him to the Caribbean island experienced a mechanical problem which forced the CAF to send a second plane to Jamaica with a crew to fix it.

Like all prime ministers, Trudeau is required for security reasons to fly in government planes and reimburses the government for the cost of commercial airfare when travelling for personal reasons.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plane is seen on the tarmac after being grounded due to a technical issue following the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023.

The documents tabled in the House report that the second plane accounted for $20,835 of the $57,553 the trip cost the armed forces.

They also report that the mechanical problem the plane encountered was a malfunctioning Integrated Standby Instrument (ISI), "which is used as an alternative source for flight and navigation data."

Retired lieutenant-colonel Dean Black said the part would have needed replacing before the plane could return safely to Canada.

"An integrated standby instrument (ISI) provides standby altitude, altitude and airspeed information to the flight crew, these being critical data components to the safe operation of an aircraft," said the longtime pilot.

Another mechanical flaw caused the C-150 Polaris ferrying Trudeau to and from the G20 Summit to be grounded in New Delhi, India in September 2023.

The third government department to incur costs related to the trip was the Privy Council Office (PCO), which provides an employee charged with ensuring the prime minister has access to secure communications. The PCO reported that its employee's 15-day stay in Jamaica cost $10,838, including $2,681 to stay at an AirBnB.

Documents obtained from the RCMP under access to information law also report that there was an incident during Trudeau's stay in Jamaica.

RCMP report 'incident' during Trudeau's stay

While the documents are heavily redacted, officers reported on Dec. 29 that an individual showed up at the Frankfort villa where the Trudeaus were staying, wanting to speak with the prime minister.

"Update on (redacted). The individual who wanted to meet (redacted) returned but this time to (redacted)," an officer wrote in an e-mail. "PPO spoke to him advising he was not to return. (redacted) agreed.

"The pics and vehicle info was shared with our partners for their situational awareness."

The e-mail chain, under the subject line "Comments on X (Twitter) re: location," said the individual left a business card with the manager.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Chamberland confirmed that the incident took place but said Trudeau was not in danger.

"The RCMP spoke to the individual, who left without incident," she said. "There was no need to engage local authorities. For privacy and security reasons, we cannot speak further on details regarding the individual, nor what prompted the incident. However, we can reassure you that at no time was the prime minister's security jeopardized during that incident."
