Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

Just finished my first Intro tour in Thailand and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of doing it! I couldn’t fault the trip one bit, from the accommodation to the activities…everything was spot on! Dan and Joe were the best group leaders and went above and beyond to help us in any way. They both made the experience stress free and would always check in to make sure we were ok and enjoying ourselves. Both these group leaders deserve a raise😆💰 Can’t wait to book my next trip with Intro!

This tour was incredible and I made so many amazing memories with awesome people! Every day is different but you do so much and there was not one day or activity I didn’t thoroughly enjoy. Accommodation is also excellent! A huge shoutout to Jonny and Jamie our tour guides who were fun, caring, organised and made sure everybody had a great time. Having done tours with bigger companies, Feel Free really make you feel like an individual and look after you. Thank you to Mat and Adam too who sorted everything and gave me so much quick advice when I couldn’t initially travel due to COVID. You guys are legends :) !!

Thailand Island Hopper - 9 days

I did the 9 day Bangkok and the South Thailand tour and it was better than I could ever have imagined! Gabs, our tour leader was absolutely incredible. She clearly loves the country and her job and made the whole experience even better! She is made for her job and would love to go on a tour with her again! The tour itself was such good value for money, everything apart from the odd meal was included and that made it so much better in the trip not having to worry about paying for things. I just wish day 1 and day 9 of the tour we could do more in addition to it being arrival and departure days! I was unsure on going with this company that I hadn’t heard much about but I would highly recommend it to anyone!

I can say I thoroughly enjoyed this trip!! Sunny - our guide & Mr Hans - our driver were fantastic, always caring, friendly, kind, thoughtful, & considerate. Sunny never stopped feeding us local food treats the whole journey!???? Mr Hans kept the ‘bus’ immaculate at all times & always had a bottle of cold water & a cold wet towel pack ready for us, when we returned back from our activities. The accommodations were superb & in good locations. Our daily activities were varied, with a good mixture of travelling, history, scenery, culture, and of course lots of fun! LOVE-LOVE-LOVED it all. I would highly recommend this trip, especially ask for Sunny & Mr Hans ???? THANKYOU

Experience Thailand 9 Days - Bangkok to the North, Small Group Tour

Geweldig!

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui Tour

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui

Normally, when I travel somewhere, I enjoy playing the role of tour guide myself. However, having never been to SE Asia before, and not speaking the language (or even recognizing the alphabet), my wife and I opted for our first tour and hoped for the best. It turned out to be an excellent decision! Without a doubt, our tour guide and our fellow travelers added to our experience. We went to places we wouldn't have gone. We stayed in lodging we wouldn't have stayed. We did activities that we wouldn't have done. And we learned things that we wouldn't have learned. On a personal level, it was nice for me to just relax as someone else handled all the logistics regarding trains, boats, transfers, taxis, etc. Even so, there was plenty of downtime throughout the tour for us to do whatever we wanted -- (SCUBA dives, private dinner, wanders through the market). Given our positive experience, I expect that we will do other tours in the future!

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days Tour

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days

We did this tour in July 2023 and due to family exigencies forgot to post the review. The tour was well planned by Legend Travel group. It was supposed to be a group tour however it was just 3 of us on the tour. which made us miss company of fellow travelers. The guides were very nice and went out of their way to help us, so very pleased with them. On the whole it was a great tour and we covered all the places that we wanted to see and did loads of other stuff with good guidance from the guides.

With two distinct seasons, the dry and rainy seasons, the best time to visit Thailand is during the cooler dry season between November and March.

The dry season is the least humid time in Thailand, and with plenty of days of sunshine, you can cruise around the islands and enjoy outdoor activities in comfortable conditions. From visiting famous Thai temples to snorkeling and scuba diving, island-hopping to chasing waterfalls, expect many pleasant days when traveling between November and March.

The temperatures rise from March to July during the early months of the rainy season but rainfall is still relatively infrequent. The heart of the monsoon season arrives in July and lasts until October, though rainfall is inconsistent and showers only last a few hours. You can plan your experiences around these expected conditions.

As travelers flock to Thailand year-round, you too can visit in the month of your choice, using our best time to visit Thailand as a guide to deciding when to go.

When to visit

The best time to visit Thailand is during its dry season. For most parts of the country, this would be between November and March, extending into April and May for some regions. Thailand is characterised by the rainy, hot and cool seasons. The north is less humid and experiences the greatest range of temperatures with cold nights during the cool season. Responsible travel

Our luxury trips are designed with responsible travel principles that prioritise travel experiences that are both good for you and good for the planet.

We had an incredible experience planning our honeymoon with Leanne and Gilda from Jacada. They crafted a personalized itinerary that exceeded our expectations, taking into account our desires and budget. Leanne's insight on different islands and cities was spot-on, and the detailed emails, including maps of international airports, made our journey seamless. The constant communication and check-ins added a sense…

Jacada planned our trip of a lifetime to Vietnam and Thailand in January/February 2024 for 3 weeks. From the moment we landed in Hanoi, they prioritized our entry through customs to a no wait line and transferred us to our guide and driver. It was seamless and professional the entire trip. We experienced the culture and people in authentic day…

Rosanna and Cathy helped us execute our DREAM honeymoon! We visited Thailand and their recommendations and itinerary were perfectly catered for us. They were extremely communicative, helpful and responsive. Thank you thank you thank you! You gave us memories to last a lifetime.

Our Southeast (Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) trip planned by Leanne Anglo and Cathy Jocubeit was perfection. We had the most wonderful time, and it was because Leanne and Cathy listened to what we wanted on the pre-planning calls before our trip and executed. Everything was either what we wanted or even better. From the tour guides to the accommodations…

Our trip was to Thailand, Cambodia and Singapore. This is the second trip we plan with Jacada and they have both been outstanding. We were two couples travelling and we are very appreciative of the hotel and tours recommendations we received on the planning stage and the flexibility and courtesy of the local tour guides whom accommodated all our requests.…

Why Use a Travel Agency for Your Thailand Trip?

In this digital age, planning a trip to a foreign country could be as simple as a few clicks. But would you risk missing out on hidden gems and cultural nuances? By partnering with a trusted travel agency , you're ensuring that your Thailand trip is tailor-made to your preferences, ensuring that you get the most out of your travel experience.

Understanding Travel Agencies

Travel agencies are the unsung heroes of the tourism industry. They handle everything from flight and hotel bookings to providing itineraries, ensuring that travelers have a seamless and enjoyable journey.

What Does a Travel Agency Do?

A travel agency takes the stress out of travel planning. Their job isn't just about booking flights and accommodation. They listen to your needs, advise on the best travel times, provide local insights, and design tailor-made itineraries that suit your preferences. They handle the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Picture this – you're in Chiang Mai, known for its elephant sanctuaries. Instead of visiting a typical touristy elephant park, your travel agent, with their local knowledge, arranges a visit to an ethical sanctuary where you can feed, bathe, and spend quality time with these magnificent creatures, contributing positively to animal welfare. That's the personalized touch a travel agency can bring to your trip.

Benefits of Using Travel Agencies for International Travel

Using a travel agency, especially for international travel, offers numerous benefits. First, they save you time and stress. Navigating through hundreds of hotel reviews and trying to find the best deals can be overwhelming. Travel agencies have the expertise and resources to do that efficiently.

Second, travel agencies have insider information and connections that most individuals do not. They can get you better deals, exclusive access to experiences, and help with any travel issues that arise.

And finally, travel agencies provide a safety net. In case of unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations or health emergencies, they will be there to provide support and solutions.

North and west of Bangkok are the flat and fertile  Central Plains of Thailand , otherwise known as the country’s Rice Bowl, where you can find ruins of the former kingdoms as early as the 6th century. The most popular destinations in this part of Thailand, taking around two hours by van from Bangkok are the Ayutthaya Historical Park and the province of Kanchanaburi.

Ayutthaya was the capital of the old kingdom of Siam and used to be a wealthy, cosmopolitan city, as befitting one of the greatest civilizations of that time. The historical park houses the ruins of that ancient city, when it was ravaged by war in 1767, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kanchanaburi became famous in the mid-2oth century as the site of the Bridge over the River Kwai Hollywood movie. The bridge is still standing in its original form. This bridge has a historical significance, having been built by Allied POWs (prisoners of war) conscripted by the Japanese forces in World War II, as part of the Thai-Burmese Railway to carry supplies and arms to the Japanese forces.

Popular Thai Festivals and Celebrations

The thailand songkran holiday & water festival.

Songkran is the celebration of the traditional Thai New Year, celebrated annually for the past centuries. This holiday is a celebration of love and goodwill, compassion and thankfulness, with water as its means of expression. Hence, since the past century, this holiday got to be also referred to as the Water Festival.

“Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that means to move or step forward. The three-day celebration of Songkran starts on the New Year’s Day of the Brahmin solar system. In Thailand, it is fixed on the 13th to 15th of April yearly. The 13th is called the Maha Songkran or the Grand Songkran and has also been declared by the government as the Day of the Senior, or Elderly, as an official appreciation for the senior population for their contributions to the family and country. The 14th is designated as Family Day as a celebration of family love and togetherness. This holiday is a government-declared extended public holiday to give the people the chance to go to their hometowns for the celebration with family reunions and merry-making.

Songkran was integrated into the Thai Water Festival. Water in Thai tradition is spiritually purifying of bad luck or grievances and endows blessings of fortune and happiness. Originally practised as collecting the cleansing waters for the Buddha statues to bless village elders and family members, trickling the waters over their shoulders. As in many traditional religious or cultural festivals, the celebrations shift to enjoyment and fun.

Thailand Grand Sale -Annual Discount Shopping in Bangkok

The Thailand Grand Sale in Bangkok is a yearly shopping mega-event between June and August, when you see hordes, yes, really hordes of crowds in the city’s shopping districts lugging several red shopping bags, the motif for participating malls and shops. The city’s shopping malls and local businesses take part in this activity, with discounts ranging from 10 – 80%, on the widest spectrum of shopping choices: clothes (from casual to sportswear) and footwear, jewellery, electrical and electronic items. For this event, what to take to Thailand will only be your credit and debit cards!

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

The colours that make up the vibrant Thai culture come from, among other things, its flowers, in all parts of this country. Every February, you can get this exciting opportunity to be surrounded by blooms of all sizes, colours, shapes, scents and flavours in the Chiang Mai Flower Festival. Chiang Mai is the biggest city in Northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. The city is nicknamed the “Rose of the North” for its gorgeous blooms and these are put on display during the Flower Festival with its parades of stunning floral design floats and floral images. The festival was originated in the 197os and had grown from a local event to one of global proportions, with guests from various countries enjoying this family-friendly event of parades, food markets, musical concerts, marching bands, among others.

Starting on the first Friday of February all through the weekend ending Sunday evening, at several parts of the city are various events and activities to celebrate this festival among the local folk and guests from other parts of Thailand and the rest of the world.

Koh Phangan Full Moon Party

The Full Moon Party started with a group of tourists sometime in 1985 who found the most beautiful moon in Koh Phangan. They arranged to have a party to celebrate the full moon on Haad Rin, a crescent-shaped beach on the island. Since then, crowds reaching up to 30,000 people go to the island each month to celebrate the full moon party which has become a global full-blown event starting at dusk. By nighttime, the event turns frenetic with dancing to all genres of music, with performers like jugglers and fire-eaters entertaining the crowds including colourful fireworks displays.

Generally, Thailand is a safe destination. It has even been rated the least dangerous country in Southeast Asia for travellers. There have been periods of unrest and conflicts in different parts of the country up to the present decade but hardly are there reported crimes in tourist areas. Of course, one must follow standard precautions in travelling, like keeping a close watch on personal belongings, awareness of surroundings, and there’s nothing to worry about.

It is relatively cheap in Thailand, especially with high conversion of Thai Baht to your country’s currency. Many things are cheap in Thailand because of low minimum wage, low labour costs, plus Thai merchants usually price their goods the same for both foreigners and native locals. Traveller reviews give Thailand a thumbs-up as among the best, if not the best value-for-money destination. From food and drinks to accommodations to shopping or souvenir crafts, prices are really reasonable, except for the tourist hot spots like Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui or Pattaya. Even in-country transportation costs are low-priced, as long as you remember to avoid negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers or take taxis without metres.

That will depend on your preference – sand and sea, mountains and jungles, culture and history, whatever you’d like to experience in Thailand. Thai Immigration Bureau policies grant a 45-day stay for foreigners. 60-day extensions are available to apply for. The shorter visa extension is because of the COVID. For more details, best to visit the Thai Embassy website where you are or the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TaT) website for tourism information. Certificate of Entry (COE) . The COE is issued to Thai nationals and foreign nationals granted entry into Thailand. COE applications by foreign nationals must be submitted 5-15 days before departure. Without the COE, entry into Thailand is not allowed. COVID Insurance for Foreigners . June is also the best month to savour Thailand’s historic and colourful culture in beautiful weather, perfect to visit the ancient city of Ayutthaya, around 80 km north of Bangkok. For budget travellers, July-October is the “low season,” smaller crowds of tourists and lower prices for a good Thailand holiday package.

Your choice of holiday destinations and itinerary will largely depend on your interests. For relaxation amidst the cool air of nature, Northern Thailand would fit your bill. There is Chiang Mai with its exotic hill tribes, Buddhist temples, handicraft markets and animal sanctuaries, Chiang Rai with the White Temple of intricate sculptures and designs, Sukhotai, the first capital city of ancient Siam and regarded as the “cradle of Thai civilization.” There is Pai Town with its hot spring and waterfalls, and its unique attraction of a traditional Chinese village with clay houses and restaurants serving Yunnan dishes. Sun Leisure World

Krabi Town is a Thai market town that was around some time before global vacationers began to visit the region. It's charming, laid back, and as much as the word is overused, it's very local. Tourism has arrived, but Krabi Town doesn't jump through hoops to bring in foreigners; as the main commercial and transit point for the province, it doesn't need to. Its special character is a welcome differentiation to the encompassing beach regions and exciting tours.

Krabi is a great place for nature lovers and tourists who just want a holiday away from the crowds and in a peaceful place with pleasant weather and a calm environment. The natural environment along with the picturesque scenery, green forests, clear water, fresh air, pleasant weather and a natural paradise is all that contribute towards the beauty of this region and make it a tourism hotspot. Full of stunning places and beautiful islands, it has slowly but steadily emerged as a popular place to visit in Thailand. An overwhelming list of best places to visit in Krabi, makes it quite a loved holiday destination.

1. Ko Phi Phi

Mu Ko Phi Phi is an archipelago that used to be listed as one of the world’s top ten most beautiful Islands. It comprises two large islands: Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Phi Le. Ko Phi Phi Don is a big island consisting of ports, Accommodation, and restaurants as well as numerous stunning Beaches, particularly, Ao Thon Sai and Ao Lo Dalam. Ko Phi Phi Le located to the south of Phi Phi Don, is surrounded by limestone mountains and sheer cliffs standing vertically to the sea. It embodies beautiful curvy bays; such as, Ao Pi Le, Ao Maya, and Ao Lo Sama. To get there: the trip takes about 2 hours via a ferry service operating daily from the Khlong Chilat Pier and Noppharat Thara Pier, or tourists can buy a tour package from a travel agency.

2. Thale Waek

It is a renowned natural attraction of Krabi and named one of the “Unseen Thailand” resulting from the natural wonder when the tide recedes; it reveals sand dunes that connect to 3 Islands; namely, Ko Kai, Ko Thap, and Ko Mo.

3. Hat Rai Le

It  is a stunning and peaceful Beach comprising 3 coastlines featuring on the west side Hat Rai Le, the east side Hat Rai Le and Tham Phra Nang. Abseiling is the favourite sport among tourists and internationally recognised among rock climbers. It is suitable for tourists who enjoy relaxing by the sea, and it takes about 20 minutes from Hat Ao Nang.

It is   also known as Ko Lao Bi Le. Situated in the Than Bok Khorani national park, the islet has a world-class breathtaking landscape, which is categorised as one of the world’s top ten attractions with amazing clean Beaches. It is surrounded by indigo sea with soft powder-like sandy beach. What makes this Island so unique is its front beach of the nearly half-circled shape. Ko Hong is recommendable for visitors who enjoy nature, swimming and Snorkelling.

It is  situated in Mu Ko Lanta national park, consists of Ko Rok Nok and Ko Rok Nai. The Island is another attraction enriched with beautiful sea and sandy Beaches that can be acclaimed as a gem of the Andaman Sea. Between Ko Rok Nok and Ko Rok Nai is a good spot for scuba diving and Snorkelling to see corals.

6. Sa Morakot

Also called Emerald Pool, located at Khao Pra-Bang Khra Wildlife Sanctuary, features a large circular emerald-like pool with a small cascade flowing and is swimmable. When visitors walk to the headwater that is located not too far, they will reach Bo Nam Phut, a wonderful ultramarine coloured pool. If we clap our hands or make a movement by the pool, there will be water surging from under the ground. This is a mystery that should not be missed.

7. Namtok Ron ,

It is situated in the middle of a shady forest, comprises a lot of small and big ponds with hot water seeping out from the ground with hot steam floating above the water like natural mineral ponds on a slope; the hot waterway running down to Khlong Thom below in descending Order looks like tiers of a small waterfall.

8. Namphu Ron Khem Khlong Thom

It is the only salted hot spring in Thailand. There are 14 natural hot springs emerging from under the ground widespread in the area that is rich with many minerals, which benefits the blood circulation system of the body. It is ideal for people who love mineral bathing.

9. Ban Ko Klang Community , is a charming community situated on a tiny Island that preserves the simple lifestyle and its own identity. It is surrounded with abundant mangrove forest of more than 1,000 rai at the estuary. Most of the villagers are Muslims. There are many interesting community-based attractions; such as, the Organic Farming Group, Khao Sang Yot Farmer Group, Ruea Hua Thong Models Group, Pateh Cloth Group, etc.

10. Laem Sak Community

It is a three-cultural community that consists of Thai-Buddhists, Thai-Muslims and Thai-Chinese. The highlights of this community include the baba-Nyonya costumes, Cruising on the Ruea Hua Thong Boat to see unusual shaped limestone mountains of the inland sea and traces of ancient rock paintings as well as raising Green Caviar seaweed, planting local orchids, and admiring the 360-degree viewpoint of sea all year-round.

11. Railay Beaches And Caves: For Beach Lovers

Glittering white sand, stunning landscapes, shining sun, transparent water and tropical climate of Railay Beach are quite pleasing. However, all these things don’t set it apart; what indeed set it apart is its limestone caves ceded in high and mighty cliffs. Even though it is accessible only by boats (due to sharp cliffs on both sides), Railay Beach has been able to gain popularity as one of the best places to visit in Krabi. Apart from its few long-tailed boats and scanty bars, the island is secluded.

12. Thung Teao Forest Natural Park

Fabled beauty and ethereal landscapes are two apt phrases used to describe Thung Teo Forest Natural Park. High trees in the darkest of greens, deep emerald-colored water at its purest, wildlife at its maximum ease, and beauty at its unusual prime – the stunning waterfall in the middle of the Natural Park gives off the surrealistic charm.

13. Wat Tham Sua: For Seeking Blessings

Sitting within the thick and high jungles, these caves house many temples and pilgrims inside their premises. Several monks set their station inside these caves to take a step towards divinity. Some of these monks have been there since their birth. Legends state that once a tiger used to live in these caves who was precious to Lord Buddha, and hence the name. As you explore the caves, you will come across many relics and icons depicting the lives and beliefs of the religion.

14. Krabi Shell Cemetery

Krabi Shell Cemetery is one of the oldest places to visit on Krabi Island, dating back to more than 40 million years. The 200 m stretch of fossilized shells came into being when limestone deposits covered the beings, trapping them in the process. It is one of the only three such cemeteries found in the world. The place is a haven for geology buffs and sea-relic lovers. There are mangrove forests and several small Chinese temples to explore around the cemetery.

15. Klong Thom Hot Springs

Free flowing warm water, decorated by shiny rocks that have been smoothed by the ferocious water flow – that’s the scene at Klong Thom hot springs. These deep-rooted thermal springs are located inside the volcanic chambers of Klong Thom. The warm water is believed to possess certain healing properties that help aid the skin diseases. Stretches of vegetation come as a welcome gift, away from the hustles-bustles of the city.

16. Khao Khanab Nam

Khao Khanab Nam is the most recognizable landmarks in Krabi. These are actually a set of mountains on either side of the bay. Their sparse vegetation and dusky brown color set the color of blue ocean bright. On top of these two mountains sits a labyrinth of caves. Made of stalagmites and stalactites, these caves are said to date to pre-historic era. Alas, the beauty comes with a beast. There have been numerous findings of human skeletons in these caves.

17. Phra Nang Beach

While you might have to take a boat from Ao Nang to reach this little haven, it will be worth your while. The ride might cost you around 100 baht or so and will take only 10 minutes. According to a local legend, the beach is named after an Indian princess-goddess who died in a shipwreck. To represent the Hindu god Shiva, the cave is covered with many phallic-shaped statues or lingas. The soft, white sand of the sprawling beach will have you enchanted for sure.

18. Krabi Elephant Sanctuary

Krabi Elephant Sanctuary is a new home for those elephants that have become overtired after working in logging and tourism industries for years. The sanctuary tries to get these elephants back into their natural habitat where they can form herds and live the rest of their lives without the risk of being overworked. You can feed and walk with the elephants and watch them while they enjoy a splash in the natural lagoon nearby.

It's estimated that there are around 200 islands and islets around the Krabi coastline, many are small rocky outcrops that rise precipitously out of the sea and have no landing access. Others are larger and uninhabited, with characteristic tiny white sand beaches, coral reefs, and intricate cave systems.

The river is a hub of activity with fishing boats and river taxis ferrying both locals and visitors to spots near and far and the pier to the west of town is the place to catch a ride to the surrounding beaches and islands. Many visitors hurry to the big name destinations - Railay, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi - getting in and out of town as quickly as possible. But for those interested in a dose of genuine Thai culture and hospitality, sticking around Krabi Town and enjoying the tour is a rewarding experience.

Krabi Thailand is safe in terms of low crime rate ; however, like in all other famous destinations one should be vigilant in Krabi, too, from pickpockets. One can always avoid this problem by acting sensibly and exercising caution. The province has nearly 80 islands.

Krabi is slightly more expensive than other areas in Thailand; however prices in general are much, much lower than in the West

You can stay there for a long time if you can. But many opt to take a day trip from Krabi and that's also great. You need to book a tour package from a local travel agent for Phi Phi islands and Maya Bay. You will have to start early morning to land at Phi Phi islands by late morning.

While meal prices in Krabi can vary, the average cost of food in Krabi is ? 367 per day . Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Krabi should cost around ?147 per person.

Krabi is famous for its scenic view and breathtaking Beaches and Islands. Its coral reef vistas are also one of the world's most beautiful, which makes the city a great spot for coral diving and many other tours.

Best area to stay in Krabi

  • Ao Nang: probably the most popular place in the Krabi area .
  • Railay & Tonsai Beach: the remote area of Krabi , reachable only by boat.
  • Nopparat Thara & Klong Haeng: a long shallow beach, very quiet, a perfect spot for a family holiday with kids or just a peaceful stay with a few sunset walks.

Krabi is the most relaxing part to be in all of Thailand, it is a province that has the most stunning scenery imaginable, beautiful white beaches that stretch on for miles, a jungle and over 200 islands just of the coast.

Krabi nightlife offers vacationers a good choice of entertainment opportunities after dark. Krabi, while not being in the same league as Patong or Bangkok, has its own distinctive nightlife

Krabi Province is a destination made in heaven for families. There is so much to do and see that you'll never have a dull moment as the province has at least 154 islands to explore, jungle elephant paths to trek along, exotic waterfalls and emerald-green ponds.

Where to stay in Krabi? A guide to the different areas in Krabi

  • Ao Nang – the main tourist centre.
  • Nopparat Thara – Ao Nang's up-and-coming neighbour.
  • Railay Beach – hippy-chic, with an island feel.
  • Ton Sai Bay – backpackers' and climbers' hangout.
  • Klong Muang & Tupkaek – upmarket escape from the crowds.

However, there are some ways to narrow down your search and find a reliable and reputable one that meets your expectations and requirements. Here are some tips on how to find a trustworthy Thailand local travel agency:
