Tom Cruise may very well be the one man left in Hollywood who commands the top spot in the box office opening weekend. Unfortunately, Jack Reacher didn't reach that feat, nor did it probably deserve to. But it's far from a weak spot in Cruise' long history of brilliant action fun. Jack Reacher stars several Oscar caliber actors including Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, and Werner Herzog. All of which provide fine performances. But if we are being honest, Cruise is having by far the most fun here. Reacher is a slightly more brutal and definitely cockier version of his now classic, Ethan Hunt character from M:I. Now over 50-years old, I'm glad he still loves delivering those cheesy punch lines as much as he is doing insane stunts. The film itself definitely takes itself a little bit more serious, however, which is where it runs into a few problems. Although I think Christopher McQuarrie's directorial effort for M:I 5 was impeccable, he has trouble balancing the tone and pace of this particular film. At times, it claims itself to be a serious and even tragic espionage thriller. But the final 30 minutes completely forget about the grounded tone and let Cruise loose on one of his bone-crushing Mission Impossible action sprees. I just would have liked a bit more of a happy medium between the two. With that said, the brilliance of the film lies within all of its espionage and mysterious elements. Way before Cruise throws a single punch or shoots any bullets, I was sucked into the mystery the opening presents. The opening segment, along with two other extended sequences, are impressively done with absolutely no dialogue, yet you understand exactly what's going on. McQuarrie's directing talent really shines there. Much of the rest of the film's fun comes from some expectedly great supporting performances from Duvall and Herzog. Both have minimal screen time but they nonetheless steal every scene they are in. There's without question fun to be had with their roles and the film itself, but I can't help but think some more time in the writer's room could have helped polish the film a little. There weren't any particular moments in the film I disliked, but the cohesiveness just wasn't present. +Cruise at his best +Fun supporting performances +Eerie tone in the first half -Too action heavy towards the end -Tonal issues 7.6/10

The new Three Stooges reboot has more sniper rifles than I remember the original series having.

It features a handfull of slick action scenes and an initially engaging plot, but Jack Reacher is ultimately little more than a disposable Cruise-headed thriller that's outclassed by many of its genre brethren.

Cruise doing his usual role of bad-ass. Enjoyable.

How to watch the Jack Reacher TV show

The new TV show released on Amazon Prime Video in February 2022, so you can watch it right now.

This means that regardless of where you're based, you can just take out an Amazon Prime Video membership or trial to get access to Prime Video and be able to watch the season at no extra cost.

If you prefer to buy it physically, Reacher's first season is coming out on 4K Blu-ray on 13 December 2022, so you can get it in top-quality once that's happened.

The big thing to understand is that the Amazon show is a complete reboot of the character - there is no continuity between the two Tom Cruise movies, Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the last of which was released in 2016.

Tom Cruise's casting was famously controversial since he's a notably short man despite his significant action movie experience, and Jack Reacher is described in the books as practically giant, as well as being blond.

This means that if you're looking to watch all of the adaptations out there right now you can basically do it in two chunks:

First, check out the two Tom Cruise movies, starting with Jack Reacher and then moving on to Never Go Back.

Then, you can move over to the new Amazon series, which has Alan Ritchson in the title role.

Lee Child has written a huge swathe of Jack Reacher novels, each broadly revolving around his hero arriving in a town or city, finding out something very wrong is happening, and trying to put it right through often brutal means.

The two Tom Cruise movies were based on the mid-series books One Shot and Never Go Back, although they played with the plots a little.

The new TV series on Amazon's first season is based on Killing Floor, the first Reacher novel , and takes a slower pace to go through the book in eight episodes with a bit more time spent on certain sequences.

'Jack Reacher', un héroe diferente

Hace unos años parecía que la buena estrella de Tom Cruise se estaba apagando, más por la mala fama propagada por los medios de comunicación que porque sus películas fuesen fracasos económicos – que no era el caso- . La llegada de la notable ‘ Misión: Imposible – Protocolo fantasma ’ (‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’, Brad Bird, 2011) fue vista por muchos como una prueba de fuego para saber si aún seguía siendo una de las principales estrellas de Hollywood y Cruise disipó toda duda posible en una saga que no deja de ser propiedad suya. Sin embargo, el protagonista de ‘Nacido el cuatro de julio ’ (‘Born on the Fourh of July’, Oliver Stone, 1989) no se conforma con lo ya conocido y con ‘ Jack Reacher ’ (Christopher McQuarrie, 2012) busca crear una nueva saga en la que ofrecer una visión más oscura a su estereotipo de héroe de acción.

El fichaje de Cruise para dar vida a Jack Reacher no estuvo exento de polémica , ya que estamos ante un personaje con orígenes literarios, donde era descrito como una mole física con un parecido casi inexistente, siendo un cruce entre Dolph Lundgren y Chris Hemsworth lo más similar que uno podría encontrar en Hollywood en lo referente a la mera apariencia. Este punto no es baladí, ya que Reacher es un portento físico capaz de aniquilar a varias personas en una pelea casi sin despeinarse o de intimidar a cualquiera que se ponga con delante con su mera presencia, algo que no cuadra demasiado con Cruise, pero que éste consigue que pase completamente desapercibido si no te empeñas en recordar cómo era originariamente el personaje.

Y es que todo cambio es aceptable para realizar cualquier tipo de adaptación si el resultado final es bueno, siendo esto lo que sucede en ‘Jack Reacher’, pues su protagonista sabe equilibrar su status establecido como héroe de acción con unas reacciones más neutras, sin querer ser simpático casi a cualquier precio y guiándose por su propia ley si así lo cree conveniente, algo que el guión va marcando de forma progresiva. Cierto que hay alguna pequeña concesión de cara a la galería – por suerte ninguna de ellas es para crear una innecesaria trama romántica con el personaje interpretado con corrección por Rosamund Pike -, pero el propio autor de las novelas (el inglés Jim Grant bajó el seudónimo de Lee Child ) defendió a Cruise como un actor idóneo para saber retratar lo que él buscaba con Jack Reacher, siendo su excesivo tamaño una metáfora para lo que el actor consigue retratar a través de su interpretación, caracterizada por un casi perfecto equilibrio entre carisma, saber estar y una actitud ligeramente chulesca sin resultar para nada cargante.

Conviene desterrar la idea vendida durante la campaña de promoción de la película de estar ante un thriller de acción al uso, ya que ‘Jack Reacher’ es un relato procedimental en el que las explosiones de acción – especialmente memorables en su tenso tramo final- surgen como consecuencia directa del avance de la investigación que se está llevando a cabo y no es ésta una mera excusa para ver al héroe de turno repartiendo estopa. Hay pequeñas inconsistencias en la forma de abordarlo, ya que en algún caso puede que se excedan un poco con el tono cómico, pero no es algo que llegue a resultar molesto o fuera de lugar. El principal punto débil de la investigación son los dos sospechosos de traición que se barajan, ya que estamos ante unos personajes interpretados por convicción – en especial el interpretado por el siempre efectivo Richard Jenkins -, pero que difícilmente podrían ser más planos. Esto choca frontalmente con el encanto del protagonista y de los villanos principales, quitando parte de atractivo a la propuesta.

Werner Herzog no es precisamente un debutante como actor, pero es principalmente conocido por las películas que ha dirigido y el encontrarle asociado a un proyecto millonario de Hollywood dando vida al principal villano de la función es toda una rara avis que a buen seguro ha sido suficiente para llamar la atención de algunos cinéfilos sobre un proyecto que, sobre el papel, se aleja de sus inquietudes habituales. En ‘Jack Reacher’ impone por presencia y actitud , utilizando sólo las palabras – y a sus secuaces- como forma de amenaza, resultando mucho más temible que aquellos que van explosionando cosas. Jai Courtney , que dará vida al hijo de John McClane en la quinta entrega de ‘Jungla de cristal’ (‘Die Hard’, John McTiernan, 1988), es su brazo ejecutor, un secuaz sofisticado que no es tan memorable como el de Herzog, pero que cumple correctamente su función.

Christopher McQuarrie debutó en la dirección en el año 2000 con ‘ Secuestro infernal ’ (‘The Way of The Gun’) y desde entonces no había repetido tras las cámaras, centrándose en su carrera como guionista, función que también ejerce en ‘Jack Reacher’, donde muestra una especial atención al detalle. La proliferación de planos cortos para resaltar pequeños objetos o acciones es algo que también se traslada a los momentos de mayor frenesí visual, en especial en la persecución automovilística en la que se incluyen multitud de casi primeros planos de Tom Cruise conduciendo. Este recurso es inhabitual incluso en aquellas ocasiones en las que la gran estrella de la función lo rueda todo sin necesidad de dobles – como es el caso-, pudiendo llegar a resultar un tanto chocante, pero es bastante coherente con la propuesta formal de McQuarrie, quien brilla especialmente en el magnífico prólogo , donde prescinde de todo diálogo para demostrar que se puede transmitir algo al espectador sin caer en las redundancias de charlas excesivamente expositivas.

El uso contenido del humor es el gran acierto del McQuarrie guionista, ya que la incluye de forma natural dentro de la personalidad del protagonista, e incluso gracietas ya muy oídas – la referencia a ciertas costumbres de los policías- cumplen su objetivo. Su cima llega con el personaje al que da vida un Robert Duvall derrochando carisma y demostrando habérselo pasado muy bien rodando la película . Su función oscila entre ser una figura clave para que Reacher atrape a los villanos y caer simpático al público, ya sea con algún gag ocasional o con su mera forma de ver la vida. Todo un acierto por parte de McQuarrie el darle más cancha de la realmente imprescindible, ya que en muchas producciones de este corte no hubiera ido más allá de una breve aparición para darnos información, pero aquí su participación es activa.

No voy a engañaros, ‘Jack Reacher’ no es un thriller memorable que vaya a perdurar en el tiempo como uno de los mejores jamás hechos, pero sí es uno bien realizado, con un equilibrio de géneros bastante conseguido y un reparto muy bien escogido, sin olvidar que cumple con creces su objetivo de ser un disfrutable entretenimiento . Hay quien sólo busca eso en el cine y otros a los parece producirles alergia, pero hay muchas posibilidades de que quienes disfruten del cine en todas sus formas – creo que yo ya he dado suficientes pruebas de ello- y no se limiten a tener una visión muy reduccionista del mismo también pasen un buen rato con esta película de Christopher McQuarrie de la que realmente espero que haya más entregas, ya que hay novelas de sobra para ello.

Jack Reacher – first look review

Panto season is almost upon us. And here's a late addition to the lineup; an unexpected guilty pleasure full of camp and vanity, complete with hissable villain and heaving cleavage.

It's the first in a hopeful new franchise for Tom Cruise , based on the bestsellers by Lee Child about a massive ex-military cop who travels the US with just a toothbrush, exacting crunchy justice on the fringe of the law. The books are insomniac heaven, pacey male fantasy about a life of righteous slugging and responsibility-free shagging.

But some fans had issues with Cruise's vital stats (Reacher is 6ft 5ins and almost 18 stone; Cruise is not). Child himself came to the rescue. "With another actor you might get 100% of the height but only 90% of Reacher. With Tom, you'll get 100% of Reacher with 90% of the height."

Trouble is, Reacher's stature is a fair percentage of his personality; a fact only patchily transferred to the film. When he duffs up five men in a car park, bystanders are duly awed, but no one remarks that it's especially impressive for a little fella.

Cruise does his best, swinging his arms, puffing his chest, clumping along with the physicality of a bigger man. But just as sucking in your cheeks can't make you thinner, nor does going through doors torso-first actually add inches.

The storyline has our hero teaming up with a hotshot lawyer, Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), to track down a sniper behind a seemingly random attack. A scene early on that fairly murmurs with sexual tension has Helen sat on a motel room bed while Reacher explains the plot to her with his top off (he only has one set of clothes, and they've got all wet). Yet Cruise's pumped, hairless chest proves as distracting for us as for her. Partly it's the framing: when Pike is centre-screen, Cruise's left breast keeps poking into the bottom of the shot.

The adaptation is also hobbled by the need for so much of Reacher's lightning-quick calculations to be spoken aloud. A taciturn man becomes a gabbler, even a bit of a showoff. "You gotta pen?" asks one baddie, telling him the address where they're holding a hostage. "Don't need one," replies Reacher. Helen drops him off at a shop and asks if he needs a lift back. "There's a bus station three miles away; I can walk there in 24 minutes." In one glorious sequence he even pulls a Derren Brown-style stunt involving a vital clue written on a folded Post-It note before Pike even has time to put in the call .

Such wizardry is yet more impressive in relief to the widespread bumbling around him. Cops crash their cars, numbskulls knock each other out, murderers direct their best scowl towards the CCTV camera and detectives chat among themselves while their interviewee takes a call from the fugitive.

The film fizzes to life when someone else with a bit of charisma gets a look-in. Luckily, there's two candidates here: Robert Duvall, as a gummy gun store owner, and, as our mysterious uber-villain, the documentary maker Werner Herzog . Playing it so straight you sometimes wonder if he quite knows what he's doing, Herzog keeps his accent, adds a glass eye and explains why he's only got half a hand. "I spent my first winter as a prisoner in Siberia wearing a dead man's coat. I chewed these fingers off before the frostbite could turn to gangrene."

When Reacher has a foe as free-wheeling as that, the smackdown is worth watching. Yet even when it's just a one-man show, there's something compelling here. It is, in its way, a curious sort of auteurist cinema, in which a lone wolf (Cruise produces as well as stars) has taken an impeccably mainstream product and made it strange around him. Fans might have hankered after bona fide strappers like The Rock. I wouldn't have missed this for the world.

Alan Ritchson no es GRANDE, es ENORME y es que a los 41 años, el actor estadounidense ha conseguido ser un GIGANTE en las series y el cine de acción gracias al éxito de ' Reacher', la serie de Prime Video más vista de la temporada.

Alan Ritchson mide 1,95 metros de altura y generalmente pesa unos 92 kilos pero ganó 13 kilos hasta llegar a los 105 kilos para encargar a Jack Reacher -mejor 'solo Reacher' como no para de decir en el personaje- y tener la envergadura del personaje de las novelas Lee Child. En su entrevista exclusiva para Men's Health, Alan Ritchson nos cuenta los secretos de este crecimiento muscular sin precedentes : sus mejores ejercicios, su dieta, su suplementación, el uso de remplazo de testosterona, la salud mental... ¡TODO!

La transformación física de Alan Ritchson para 'Reacher'

A sus 41 años, Alan Richson está en su gran momento en Hollywood y, sumado al éxito de la segunda temporada de 'Reacher' (se convirtió en el programa más visto de Prime Video durante su fin de semana de estreno), el actor protagoniza junto a Hilary Swank 'Ordinary Angels' y tiene un papel en 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' de Guy Ritchie y junto a otro gigante como Henry Cavill , que se estrenará en España en abril.

Pero antes pasó por cientos de casting y para todo tipo de trabajos. Comenzó como modelo de Abercrombie & Fitch en las campañas de Bruce Weber. En 2003, cuando tenía 20 años, hizo la audición para 'American Idol' como cantante, y en 2005, se pasó a la actuación consiguiendo un papel como Aquaman en la serie 'Smallville'.

Aunque le prometieron que habría un spin-off de Aquaman, el proyecto nunca se hizo realidad y en 2011 estaba en el casting para ser 'Thor' . "No lo tomé en serio", dice. “Pensé: 'Me darán el papel si me parezco al héroe, a nadie realmente le importa cómo actúo". Después de la audición, el equipo de casting le dijo a su equipo que el papel era suyo, pero finalmente Chris Hemsworth sería Thor y Ritchson tendría que seguir esperando su momento.

Alan Ritchson tuvo más tiempo (un año y medio) entre el final de la primera temporada y el comienzo de la segunda. "Estaba completamente fatigado y destrozado y tenía un hombro lesionado", asegura el actor, así que su médico le sugirió que probara una terapia de reemplazo de testosterona . Aunque todavía hace ejercicio cinco días a la semana (“la gente puede pensar lo que quiera, pero yo hago ejercicio muy duro”), dice que la TRT le ha hecho mucho más fácil mantener sus ganancias.
