Background information

The Ilocos Region, also known as Region I, is situated between the West Philippine Sea, CAR, the Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon. It was originally composed of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union. Pangasinan, which used to be part of Central Luzon, was only included as part of Region I on 1972 during the time of the late President Marcos. The primary language is Ilokano, followed by Pangasinan then Tagalog. There's this stereotype that Ilocanos (i.e. the people in this region) are much more careful about spending money, hard-working and close-knit compared to their brothers in Luzon. They're also noted to be extremely loyal and brave, and are able to withstand hardships for longer periods of time. Perhaps there is some to truth these claims if you put it in a context that considers their land's geography. If one factors the limited area for agriculture in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La Union, one will see that food production is a real issue. So they are, in a way, forced save as much as they can and find other sources of income to make ends meet. They found these options in spinning and dyeing yarns, weaving blankets, etc., and making clay pots.

I am drawn by their dark skin not because it is also my coloring but because I know that their color is a product of diligent work - endless hours of toil under the scorching sun, baking their skin to plant tobacco. I am intrigued by the lines on their hands, a product of complicated hand weaving to make the world-famous inabel that most people in the city adorn their dining tables with. It is fascinating how they are able to make very simple yet tasty dishes most people have dismissed as peasant food in the past yet a quick survey in the menu of most Manila Pinoy restaurants would indicate that these dishes now command a good cost on the table. I guess I like that their life is a lesson lived and shared to all those who cared to learn --- that even though you cannot change the cards that you are dealt with, if you ever so patiently learn how to play the hand you'll end up with something worth admiring."

How to Get to Ilocos

Manila to ilocos.

Laoag is a 6 to 8-hour ride from Manila while Vigan is 8 to 9 hours. Several bus lines serve the route including Florida Bus Line, Partas Liner, Baliwag Transit and Fariñas Transit. The trip is via North Luzon Expressway and Manila North Road passing through the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union and fare is around P400 – P700.

By air, Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific fly to Laoag daily from Manila, travel time is an hour. From Laoag International Airport.

Clark to Ilocos

For those coming from Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark Field, Pampanga, ride the shuttle or jeepney going to Dau Integrated Bus Terminal, fare is around P50. In Dau Terminal, look for buses going to Vigan and Laoag.

Baguio to Ilocos

There are numerous departures (buses and vans) daily from Baguio City Bus Terminal to Vigan and Laoag, travel time is not more than four hours, fare ranges from P200 – P300.

The State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery (usually being called Tretyakovka) is an art gallery in Moscow, specialized in Russian visual arts and it’s one of the world’s biggest collections. Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA . 

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality. 

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.
