  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

star trek strange new worlds, season 2

Strange New Worlds ' cast also features Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura (who is a young cadet when we catch up with her here), Jess Bush as a younger version of the ship's nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun as a younger Dr Joseph M'Benga.

They're joined by Christina Chong 's chief of security La'an Noonien-Singh, plus Melissa Navia as Enterprise helmsman Erica Ortegas. And season two will also introduce James T Kirk himself as a recurring character, played by Paul Wesley following his cameo in the first season finale.

A key theme that has run through Strange New Worlds so far is Pike, having experienced a terrifying vision of his own future, pondering whether he can change his own destiny and that of others around him. The second season will also feature a crossover with animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Here's how you can watch as the show returns to streaming.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' second season premieres today ( Thursday, June 15 ), streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in countries including the UK and the US. New episodes will arrive every Thursday after that, with the season finale expected to premiere on August 17.

In the UK, new Paramount+ customers can enjoy a 7-day free trial of the service, and after that it will cost £6.99 per month, or £69.90 per year .

Pricing for the service in the US differs , depending on how you feel about adverts and whether you want to pay extra for the Showtime programming add-on. There are four main options:

  • Essential tier: $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year
  • Premium tier: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year
  • Essential tier with Showtime: $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year
  • Premium tier with Showtime: $11.99 per month, or $119.99 per year

All US plans open up access to a vast library of TV shows and movies, plus live sport such as NFL and men's UEFA Champions League coverage, and 24/7 news via CBSN. Note that Essential tiering doesn't include your local live CBS station.

The Premium tier has very limited ads (with some appearing in live TV and "a few shows" according to Paramount itself). It also opens up download access and enables you to watch your local CBS station live.

As you'd expect, adding Showtime to your plan gives you access to its library.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: how to watch, episodes and everything we know

Where are Captain Pike and the Starship Enterprise crew boldly going next?

Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many Paramount Plus entries in the streaming service's expansive Star Trek universe. Other Star Trek shows on the streaming service include Star Trek: Discovery , Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Prodigy .

Following the success of Star Trek: Discovery and the popularity among Trekkies of a certain Captain Pike (though we suspect actor Anson Mount’s jawline has much to do with it), the Star Trek studio finally gave in to fan demand and greenlit this latest spin-off.

Strange New Worlds has now completed its initial mission (season), but here's everything you need to know about the new series? Hit it.

How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

All episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US and UK. The Paramount Plus original series is available to all subscribers to the streaming service, whether they are signed up for the ad-supported or ad-free version.

When is the next Star Trek: Strange New World episode?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode 10, the season 1 finale, debuts on Paramount Plus in the US on July 7.

For UK Paramount Plus subscribers, episode 5 is now available on the streaming service.

Other Star Trek shows like Star Trek: Discovery ’s fourth season , are moving from their original UK home on Netflix to Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episodes

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 1, "Strange New Worlds" "When one of Pike’s officers goes missing while on a secret mission for Starfleet, Pike has to come out of self-imposed exile. He must navigate how to rescue his officer, while struggling with what to do with the vision of the future he’s been given."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 2, "Children of the Comet" "While on a survey mission, the  U.S.S. Enterprise  discovers a comet is going to strike an inhabited planet. They try to re-route the comet, only to find that an ancient alien relic buried on the comet’s icy surface is somehow stopping them. As the away team try to unlock the relic’s secrets, Pike and Number One deal with a group of zealots who want to prevent the  U.S.S. Enterprise  from interfering."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 3, "Ghosts of Illyria" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  encounters a contagion that ravages the ship. One by one, the entire crew is incapacitated except for Number One, Una Chin-Riley, who must now confront a secret she’s been hiding as she races to find a cure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 4, "Memento Mori" "While on a routine supply mission to a colony planet, the  U.S.S. Enterprise  comes under an attack from an unknown malevolent force. Pike brings all his heart and experience to bear in facing the crisis, but the security officer warns him that the enemy cannot be dealt with by conventional Starfleet means." In this episodes, Star Trek fans were re-introduced to an iconic villain .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 5, "Spock Amok" "It’s a comedy of manners when Spock has a personal visit in the middle of Spock and Captain Pike’s crucial negotiations with an unusual alien species."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 6, "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach" "A threat to an idyllic planet reunites Captain Pike with the lost love of his life. To protect her and a scientific holy child from a conspiracy, Pike offers his help and is forced to face unresolved feelings of his past."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 7, "The Serene Squall" "While on a dangerous humanitarian mission, the crew of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  stumbles into a harrowing game of leverage with the quadrant’s deadliest space pirate."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 8, "The Elysian Fields" "The Enterprise becomes stuck in a nebula that is home to an alien consciousness that traps the crew in a fairy tale."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 9, "All Those Who Wander" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  crew comes face-to-face with their demons – and scary monsters too – when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 10, "A Quality of Mercy" "In the season one finale, just as Captain Pike thinks he’s figured out how to escape his fate, he’s visited by his future self, who shows him the consequences of his actions."

Will there be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

Affirmative. In January 2022, five months before season 1 had even aired, Paramount confirmed a season 2 was going ahead. Only a few months later they assigned their Captain Kirk ( The Vampire Diaries ’ Paul Wesley) and began shooting.

We don't know yet when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is going to premiere on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds plot

While Strange New Worlds is an all new adventure in the Star Trek universe for the uninitiated (unlike Picard for example), there’s a bit of background it’s good to be aware of. The show’s main man, Captain Pike, was Star Trek ’s very first captain, appearing in a long-unseen pilot episode of The Original Series entitled "The Cage" (the episode finished filming in 1965 but was not seen by audiences until 1986, via home video) set in the year 2254.

William Shatner’s iconic Captain James T. Kirk then took over, with Pike (having suffered a debilitating accident) popping up again mid-way through season 1 for a farewell double-bill appearance. Shenanigans with fan favorite Lieutenant Spock ensue, leaving Pike to live out a pain-free life on the planet Talos IV from the year 2267 onwards.

How is this relevant? Well, Strange New Worlds takes place in the years between Pike’s adventures in Discovery ’s second season, circa 2257, and his final days in The Original Series , so there’s a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of precedent, which we think bodes well for some out-of-the-borg-cube thinking.

Series co-creator Akiva Goldsman confirmed Strange New Worlds will take on a near-fully episodic approach (heads up The Next Generation and Voyager fans), confirming there will be, "room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures." The one thing that will break the episodic structure? Character arcs.

Star Trek

The poster and trailer show Pike’s transition from his idyllic home in the Mojave desert to the bridge of the Enterprise. We know his two trusty subordinates from Discovery — Science Officer Spock and First Officer 'Number One' (real name Una Chin-Riley) — will be by his side.

Some iconic legacy characters return here too, including Nurse Chapel, who assisted Dr. McCoy in The Original Series sickbay and Nyota Uhura (famously played by Nichelle Nichols in The Original Series and Thandi Newton in the alternate timeline movies of 2009, 2013 and 2016).

There’s also a new addition we’re particularly excited about, Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname will trigger Trekkie memories of Ceti eels (think hard-skinned killer leeches) and one of the best space showdowns in Star Trek — perhaps even sci-fi film — history. Whether or not she’s related to Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-engineered superhuman and the show’s most memorable villain, is yet to be seen, but it’s certainly a thrilling prospect (for the avoidance of doubt, we’re referring to Khan in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan , not the alternate timeline Khan of Star Trek Into Darkness ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

The headline cast here remain those from Discovery , namely Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Pike, Spock and Number One. Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding takes on Cadet Nyota Uhura and Christina Chong plays La’an Noonien-Singh. Pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia and sickbay is manned by Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga. Bruce Horak will feature as a recurring guest star as Andorian officer Hemmer.

Is there a trailer?

Yes, Anson Mount unveiled it to the internet on his Twitter feed on April 3, 2022. Check it out below:

Paramount+ UK To Launch With 3 Episodes Of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’

star trek new worlds uk

| June 3, 2022 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 18 comments so far

Last month it was announced that  Paramount+ is coming to the UK and Ireland on June 22nd. We now have more details including how the service will be rolling out the new series Trek: Strange New Worlds .

Paramount Plus UK debuts with Strange New Worlds

Paramount+ UK has announced highlights for their launch in June which includes Strange New Worlds . When the service arrives on Wednesday, June 22nd it will include the first three episodes. New episodes will be available weekly on Wednesdays for the 10-episode first season. This does mean that in the UK and Ireland fans will be running around 5 weeks behind Paramount+ in other regions, with episode 8 of Strange New Worlds set to arrive in the USA on Thursday, June 23rd.

TrekMovie has also confirmed that the UK service will include all four seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and all ten episodes of the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy . There is no word yet on how new episodes from these three original Star Trek series will arrive in the future in the UK, however recently global Paramount+ releases have been in the same week as the USA. Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard continue to be exclusive to Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

According to the original announcement, the UK release will include “access to the Star Trek universe.” And the new June update confirms this includes six Star Trek feature films (II, III, VI, Generations, Nemesis, and Star Trek 2009).

Other highlights for the June 22 launch include the first three episodes of Halo , The Man Who Fell To Earth , and Super Pumped along with full seasons for The First Lady , The Offer , Mayor of Kingstown , Yellowstone , 1883 , American Rust , Yellowjackets , and iCarly .

In the UK and Ireland, Paramount+ will be available online at paramountplus.com and via the Paramount+ app. Pricing is £6.99 per month/£69.90 per annum in the UK, with Republic of Ireland pricing to be confirmed in the coming weeks. It will also launch on Sky platforms in the UK with Sky Cinema subscribers getting Paramount+ at no additional cost.

In case you missed it, here is the launch teaser from last month …

CBS Chief Says Star Trek Remains A Priority For Paramount, Answers Why ‘Legacy’ Has Not Been Greenlit

Rule of Acquisition no.1: Don’t release all episodes on streaming services at once. Rule of Acquisition no.2: Don’t release different series on the same streaming service, even if they are related. Aaaaand still no news about Germany.

I think the problem for some of the content is they are still locked in to exclusive contracts with other providers, possibly ones from years ago, so if there are Star Trek series and films missing that’s likely why.

It doesn’t excuse them for not just catching up Strange New Worlds though.

Huh – so we don’t get ST-TMP Director’s Edition.

“the new June update confirms this includes six Star Trek feature films (II, III, VI, Generations, Nemesis, and Star Trek 2009)” – no mention of the Motion Picture director’s edition, which is on P+ in the US.

No news about Japan. I get it. You don’t want to partner with Docomo. That is unfortunate… They made it so easy to get Disney +. Bummer.

🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 @ Paramount+

Still no “Strange New Worlds” for Germany, one of the main Star Trek markets with the most faithful Trek fans. They should have released season one here as Season Pass on amazon prime for purchase (they did the same for Discovery season 4 for people who wanted to watch the season in good quality and not this bad quality on Pluto TV).

And before someone says, that then Paramount has got no top seller for the Paramount+ streaming service launch in Germany remember that the launch in Germany will come so late, that they can already use Season 2 of SNW for marketing the launch.

Really abominable what Paramount does.

Maybe they still haven’t dubbed it yet, though plenty of people will presumably watch it with subs or even just in English.

CBS went big and all-in with the early licensing agreements overseas.

They’re mostly expired, but it’s been a long transition.

I keep wondering when things will unwind with BellMedia in Canada, but the situation is complex, especially as Discovery is produced in a studio co-owned and run by BellMedia.

People complaining probably don’t realize that these delays in other territories are because of pre-existing international distribution agreements that go back a decade or more.

At least we have PlutoTV in Germany. So, why not presenting SNW here in the original? And how can an old contract refer to a brand new series? Or why is the information policy so bad in Germany? Why does Paramount not attend the biggest SciFi Convention in Germany?

Gosh, staggered international release dates make zero sense in this day and age. Such an outdated model. Many UK fans for example are right up to date with all the new series including SNW. VPN is big business among the more tech savvy folks.. not forgetting the less-than-legal services which are also thriving…

Any idea if we will get the Directors Cut of TMP

Well the way they’ve handled this hasn’t made me wait to watch Strange New Worlds, it’s just stopped me paying for it.

I wont be paying for another streaming service

If we don’t have TMP DE and up to the minute SNW, they can forget it. Boo.

So even when we get Strange New Worlds, they still can’t catch us up to the US….

Well done, I may consider once everything is released, I’d have happily suscribed but if I am going be behind anyway what would be the point?

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ UK Airdate: Later Than Hoped

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,  the highly anticipated prequel series featuring the classic characters of Spock and Captain Pike, is coming to the UK, and will be available on the Paramount+ streaming service.

The bad news for UK fans: We can confirm that Strange New Worlds  will be exclusive to Paramount+, so you will have to wait more than a month – the show is launching in the US on May 5, but Paramount+ is coming to the UK on June 22, 2022 .

Until then, the show won’t be available on any other streaming services or VOD stores in the UK, such as Amazon’s Prime Video.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  is a 10-episode prequel series that takes place before Star Trek – The Original Series , and follows the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ), his Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Spock ( Ethan Peck ).

These characters were originally conceived as part of the original Star Trek series back in the 60s, with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, Majel Barrett as Number One, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Following the unsuccessful pilot, Hunter was eventually replaced by William Shatner as the Captain of the Enterprise – James T. Kirk .

The modern incarnation of these characters was first introduced on Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.  Following positive reactions from critics and fans, a full spin-off series, with these characters, was announced – which is how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  came to be.

Unlike the other two new Star Trek shows ( Discovery and Picard ) that have very linear season-long stories, Strange New Worlds  will be similar to the original series in that every episode will have a standalone story (also known as ‘Monster of The Week’ episodes), which will often conclude by the end of the episode.

Paramount+ is a streaming service that started as CBS All Access, in the US, in 2014. From its early days, the channel also produced original shows, such as The Good Wife  spin-off  The Good Fight , and  Star Trek: Discovery .

In 2021, CBS All Access changed its name to Paramount+, following the merger with Viacom, bringing in content from additional partners, such as Showtime, Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures.

Paramount+ will be launching in the UK on June 22, at a cost of £6.99/month or £69.90/year , after a 7-days trial.

Star Trek fan site TrekCore spoke to executive producer Alex Kurtzman  about the international release of Strange New Worlds , which is bound to disappoint some of the fans:

Star Trek Shows In The UK

In the US, all Star Trek shows (the classic ones and the new ones) are available to stream on Paramount+.

In the UK, things are a bit more complicated – for now. The older programmes ( The Original Series , TNG, Voyager, Deep Space 9 and Enterprise ) are currently available on Netflix UK.

Star Trek: Discovery   used to be available on Netflix (in the UK and around the world – except the US), but right before Season 4’s premiere, all seasons were removed from the service. To appease the angry fans, the Season 4 was then streamed live in the UK on Pluto TV , and was also available to buy on Amazon’s Prime Video VOD store .

But wait, there’s more – both seasons of Star Trek: Picard, the sequel series to  Star Trek: The Next Generation  featuring Patrick Stewart,  are streaming in the UK on Amazon’s Prime Video.

With a third season coming next year, it remains to be seen whether it will remain on Prime Video – or move over to Paramount+ in the UK.

The two first seasons of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks series are also on Prime Video , with a third season returning in Summer 2022. We don’t know yet whether it will come directly to Paramont+, or remain on Prime Video.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

When one of Pike's officers goes missing while on a secret mission for Starfleet, Pike has to come out of self-imposed exile; he must navigate how to rescue his officer, while struggling with what to do with the vision of the future he's been given.

While on a survey mission, the U.S.S. Enterprise discovers a comet is going to strike an inhabited planet; while trying to unlock the comet's secrets, Pike and Number One deal with a group of zealots who want to prevent any interference.

The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters a contagion that ravages the ship; one by one, the entire crew is incapacitated except for Number One, Una Chin-Riley, who must now confront a secret she's been hiding as she races to find a cure.

While on a routine supply mission to a colony planet, the U.S.S. Enterprise comes under attack from an unknown malevolent force; Pike learns that the enemy cannot be dealt with by conventional Starfleet means.

A personal visit causes a comedy of errors during Spock and Pike's crucial negotiations with an unusual alien species.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: everything we know about the Star Trek prequel

The latest intel on Original Series prequel Strange New Worlds – including its release date and mysterious Khan connections.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2

The adventures of the USS Enterprise didn’t start with James T Kirk. Star Trek : Strange New Worlds is set around a decade before he embarked on the most famous five-year mission in TV history, and puts his predecessor – Christopher Pike – back in the captain’s chair.

Pike first appeared in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’ back in 1966, but it was his comeback in Star Trek: Discovery’s second season (where he was played by Anson Mount) that earned him his own spin-off show. Pike and fellow ‘Cage’ veterans Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn) and Spock (Ethan Peck inheriting the role made famous by Leonard Nimoy) proved so popular with fans that Paramount Plus decided to make Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the latest addition to Trek’s rapidly expanding shared universe .

And when it launches later this year, the show will feature a few more iconic names from the ’60s, including Nurse Chapel, Dr M’Benga and a genuine Trek legend in the form of Uhura. There’s also a mysterious crew member called La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname has a special resonance for fans of the final frontier.

With producers promising less serialized storytelling than Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks set to get back to the cosmos-exploring traditions of the Original Series and The Next Generation. Here’s everything we know so far – hit it!

What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first officer Una Chin-Riley (better known as Number One) on the USS Enterprise, around a decade before James T Kirk takes command.

Release date: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will beam onto Paramount Plus on May 5, 2022 – after Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and Star Trek: Picard season 2 have finished boldly going.

Cast: Alongside its familiar trio of lead characters (still played by Discovery's Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn), six new crew members will be taking their places on the Enterprise bridge. Read more about them below.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date

Star trek: strange new worlds release date: may 2022.

It's so long ago that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds got its greenlight (May 2020) that Paramount Plus was still known as CBS All Access at the time.

Unfortunately, coronavirus significantly delayed its departure from Spacedock, and the show didn't make it in front of the cameras until March 2021. Production on Strange New Worlds' 10-episode first season eventually wrapped in October 2021, as confirmed in a video announcement from star Anson Mount:

Now the wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is almost over. StarTrek.com confirmed on January 18, 2022 that the new voyages of the USS Enterprise will boldly go onto Paramount Plus in the US on Thursday May 5, 2022 – coinciding with the conclusion of Starfleet stablemate Picard's second season.

Jess Bush, who'll play Nurse Christine Chapel in the show, celebrated the announcement by posing in one of the Enterprise's Jefferies Tubes with co-star Christina Chong (La'an Noonien-Singh).

While we know Strange New Worlds will stream on Paramount Plus in the US, it may vary depending on where you are. The streamer is set to launch in the UK in 2022, and we'd expect to see Strange New Worlds debuting on there – especially after the recent controversial announcement that Discovery's fourth season has been shifted from its traditional international home on Netflix, to help launch Paramount Plus around the world.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer

Is there a star trek: strange new worlds trailer.

There's no sign as yet, but with less than three months until the series' launch, it can't be long until we get to see a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer. Indeed, with Star Trek: Discovery returning from its mid-season break and Picard's second season kicking off in early March, Paramount have a pair of tentpoles they can hang a promo off.

That said, journalists at the show's Television Critics Association panel on February 1, 2022 were treated to first-look footage focussing on Cadet Nyota Uhura (played by Celia Rose Gooding), the character made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the Original Series. Den of Geek reported that most of the bridge crew were also accounted for in the clip.

Back in September 2021, the Star Trek Day event also unveiled a brief teaser introducing the cast. It contains a few stills from the new series, including a glimpse at the new-look USS Enterprise uniforms – a modern riff on the classic gold, blue and uniforms we saw in ’The Cage’ and the original series.

Going back even further in time, leads Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn beamed in an announcement video in May 2020:

As you’d expect, the party line was very much that the show exists because of fan demand. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening,” says Peck, while Mount explains a bit about the tone of the series. “[It’s] a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster: the frontier is waiting

While Paramount are keeping us waiting for a trailer, the tantalizing new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster is doing more than enough to get us excited about the show. It features Captain Pike on horseback in what looks like his home in the Mojave desert – but the real excitement comes from what's in the sky above him. The iconic USS Enterprise is hovering in front of a pair of alien worlds – and, no doubt, several new life forms and new civilizations.

If the "The frontier is waiting" tagline isn't enough to get Trek fans firing up their warp drives, chances are nothing will.

A post shared by Star Trek (@startrek) A photo posted by on

“We wanted [the poster] to reflect that the [concept] of the final frontier is at just the beginning,” executive producer (and Star Trek's de facto commander-in-chief) Alex Kurtzman told the show's TCA panel (via Syfy ) . “We think it brings the sense of nostalgia hope, optimism, exploration and sense of adventure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

Star trek: strange new worlds cast: who’s beaming onto the enterprise bridge.

The principal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast looks like this:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Mr Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Lt Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr M'Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Hemmer

Ever since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was confirmed in 2020, we've known that three actors would be reprising their roles from Discovery.

Anson Mount is back in the captain’s chair as Captain Christopher Pike. Meanwhile, after proving himself worthy of donning the pointy ears that once belonged to Leonard Nimoy, Ethan Peck returns as Spock. Rebecca Romijn continues as first officer/helmsperson Number One.

A ‘start of production’ video released in March 2021 introduced five other members of the cast:

The five new additions to the USS Enterprise bridge crew are Melissa Navia (from Dietland), Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill), Christina Chong (Doctor Who, Line of Duty), Babs Olusanmokun (Black Mirror), and Jess Bush (Skinford).

At the Star Trek Day panel in September 2021, it was finally confirmed who each of them would be playing.  We also learned that the full name of Number One is Una Chin-Riley – the first time this has been confirmed in the character’s 56-year history.

Intriguingly, three of the new cast members are playing characters who – like, Pike, Number One and Spock – were first established in the 1960s.

The most famous of these roles goes to Celia Rose Gooding, who plays a younger version of Nyota Uhura, the Enterprise communications officer famously portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the original series and first six Star Trek movies. (Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana took on the role in JJ Abrams' rebooted Trek.)

Gooding explained to the assembled journalists at the TCA event in February 2021 that this will be a much less experienced version of the communications officer we saw serving alongside Captain Kirk in the Original series.

“Nichelle had a level of understanding and clarity [in her portrayal], but we're showing different parts of her humanity, which isn't as sure and asks questions as we go along,” the actress explained. “Getting to represent an iconic character in a multi-faceted way is an honor and now we're getting to see other sides of Uhura that go outside of the limitations set for Black women in the '60s."

Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr M'Benga (originally played by Booker Bradshaw), a character who filled in as the Enterprise's chief medical officer when Dr McCoy was absent in the original series. Jess Bush, meanwhile, inherits the role of Nurse Christine Chapel, who worked alongside McCoy in the Enterprise Sick Bay.

Chapel is one of two Strange New Worlds characters who were originally played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry back in the 1960s – the other is Number One, who made her one-and-only vintage Trek appearance in 'The Cage'. (Barrett-Roddenberry also went on to play Lwaxana Troi and voice the Enterprise computers in The Next Generation.)

Of the Starfleet newbies, Bruce Horak's Hemmer is a member of the Andorian species. The fact he's wearing a red shirt – aka Star Trek's sartorial kiss of death – doesn't bode well for his life expectancy. The same could be said for Melissa Navia's Lt Erica Ortegas.

The most mysterious addition to the cast, however, is Christina Chong's La'an Noonien-Singh. The fact she shares a surname with The Wrath of Khan's Big Bad can't be a coincidence, but seeing as Trek canon tells us the cryogenically frozen 20th century villain won't be thawed out until after Kirk has taken command of the Enterprise, it's unclear how they're linked – but there definitely is a connection.

"She's related to Khan for sure, and, uh, the deal will unfold...” co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed at a Television Critics Association panel in February 2022 (via the Hollywood Reporter ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already has its first great mystery...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds story

What can we expect to see in the star trek: strange new worlds story.

Star Trek: Discovery spoilers ahead – proceed with caution if you haven't seen season 2.

Pike, Spock and Number One have been part of the Star Trek story even longer than James T Kirk – they were on board the Enterprise in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’, unaired in the ’60s and set more than a decade before Kirk’s famous five-year mission. Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett originated the three roles.

While we know that the trio have been together at least three years by the time Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off and that a tragic fate awaits Pike – more on that later – most of their voyages remain undocumented. That means it’s prime storytelling territory and – after the more serialized Discovery and Picard – a chance for Trek to get back to the standalone stories of its earlier years.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” executive producer Akiva Goldsman (and director of the Strange New Worlds pilot episode) told Variety in May 2020. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”

The ability to visit a huge galaxy of, well, strange new worlds, should allow the show to feel different from week to week – after all, this versatile formula is a big reason for the franchise’s longevity.

“We want to do Star Trek in the classic mode; Star Trek in the way Star Trek stories were always told,” fellow EP Henry Alonso Myers said at a Star Trek Day panel (via TrekMovie ). “It's a ship and it's traveling to strange new worlds and we are going to tell big ideas science fiction adventures in an episodic mode. So we have room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures..."

Strange New Worlds won't be entirely devoid of serialization, however, as writer Akela Cooper explained: “While we'll have individual one-off plots, the character arcs are what's going to carry us through in a more serialized fashion. There's probably one point that we will be sprinkling through this series until we actually get to the episode. And that's all I can say about that.”

Goldsman explained a bit more about the structure of the show in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in April: “If you think back to the original [Star Trek] series, it was tonally more liberal – I don‘t mean in terms of politics but it could sort of be more fluid. Like sometimes Robert Bloch would write a horror episode. Or Harlan Ellison would have ‘City on the Edge of Forever’, which is hard sci-fi. Then there would be comedic episodes like 'Shore Leave’ or ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’. So [co-showrunner] Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that. We’ve all become very enamored, myself included, with serialized storytelling. Picard is deeply serialized but Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week, but with serialized character arcs.”

Strange New Worlds

Going on Mount’s performance in Discovery, Pike is the ideal captain for an optimistic mission of exploration.

“The writers have done a magnificent job of establishing this captain as his own iteration of what a Starfleet captain should be, independent of other captains in canon,” the actor said at the TCA panel (as reported by Syfy ). “Humility is a big part of his character. And his father was a science teacher and scholar of comparative religion, so exploration is a big part of Pike. He’s looking at the things that made us see what’s next over the horizon? Are we searchers or conquerors?”

We can also expect to see a Spock more prone to displays of emotion than his Original Series counterpart, as the younger version of the character struggles to balance his logical Vulcan side with his human urges.

Indeed, in ‘The Cage’, Number One was the more buttoned-up, logical member of the crew – her personality traits passing to the Vulcan when Star Trek went to series. “She's way more complex than y'all know,” actor Rebecca Romijn teased in the cast introduction video released on Star Trek Day, and she expanded on the theme in the panel.

“'The Cage' being such an old pilot, the writers have this very unique opportunity where they've had this character that's existed since the beginning of the canon, but she's never been written,” Romijn pointed out. “I can't wait to find out how vast her skill set is. What are the arrows in her quiver? My number one question is, 'What's her backstory?’ [The writer's room] floated an idea for Number One's backstory that I'm not going to share right now because it blew my mind when they said it.”

Despite being made more than half a century after the Original Series, the look of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will echo those early ’60s designs – from the Enterprise starship interiors to the Starfleet uniforms.

“It’s a fine line because, obviously, we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show,” Goldsman told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs [to the Original Series] and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember, the Enterprise existed as a little piece [of Star Trek: Discovery], but now it’s its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of the Original Series, that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Intriguingly, at this point in the Star Trek timeline , Kirk and other members of the original crew must be out there somewhere in the universe, so the smart money would be on a few headline-grabbing (recast) guest appearances – as the older members of the Original Series line-up, McCoy and Scotty would seem prime candidates.

If a few familiar faces do turn up, however, we may have to wait a while to see them, with Goldsman telling the TCA panel that bringing classic characters back into the fray isn't a priority.

“We’re starting wth this crew and don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy,” he said. “We want to dig deeply into the characters in this ensemble. We’re open to widening our arms, but right now, and this is said in the best possible way, what you see is what you get."

Perhaps the biggest elephant on the Enterprise bridge, however, is Pike’s tragic story…

When we meet him in Original Series two-parter ‘The Menagerie’, it’s revealed that he’s been left severely disabled by a radiation leak. In Discovery, he’s forced to endure a vision of that future, so it'll be intriguing to see how that knowledge preys on his mind, and how much it plays into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ story.

“The most honest thing I can say is, I'm still figuring out,” Mount explained at Star Trek Day. “Pike didn't just learn how he dies, he learns in what circumstances. So we do know that at some point he's going to be presented with a promotion opportunity to Fleet Captain. And he has to accept that in order for the fate to come into existence. So what is it that's going to allow him, both in terms of circumstance and emotion, to accept that promotion? It's a tough question but I think we'll figure it out together.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is already confirmed

The show hasn't even aired yet and Strange New Worlds: season 2 has already been confirmed by Paramount Plus via StarTrek.com . In fact, the streaming service is so engaged by the prospect of a follow-up season that it's already shooting – one journalist at Strange New Worlds' TCA panel on February 1, 2022 noted that Ethan Peck was wearing his Vulcan ears and costume because he was already working on the new season.

At the #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds #TCA22 panel, Ethan Peck has his costume and Vulcan ears on. He's currently shooting. February 1, 2022

The most beloved modern Star Trek shows are both getting renewed, but there's sad news for one of them

The Trek giveth, and the Trek taketh away

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds / Star Trek: Lower Decks

It's a big day of good news and bad news for Star Trek fans, as Paramount giveth and Paramount taketh away. First the good news - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for a fourth season. The beloved Star Trek prequel series has been greenlit for season 4 even before the third season has aired.

In the kinda bad news column, Paramount has also offered up the doubled-edged sword that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere in fall 2024 - but it will also be the animated streaming series' final season.

Both announcements were made on social media, with a pair of graphics, seen here:

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return for a fourth season. The final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks arrives on @paramountplus this fall. pic.twitter.com/FaRy7X8NnI April 12, 2024

As a fan of both shows, I'm obviously torn. I'm delighted that Strange New Worlds is continuing - it's been a delightfully campy but still sincere throwback to the best of classic Star Trek. And I'm excited to know that Lower Decks will be back sooner rather than later.

But I'm still slightly crushed that Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, Rutherford, and their ever expanding cast of crewmates are reaching the end of their journey. It takes a lot to sell me on animated comedies, and Lower Decks hit the mark with both its humor and its loving approach to Trek lore.

That said, the best Star Trek characters have a way of living on. Strange New Worlds itself proves that, with a throwback cast of characters including Captain Christopher Pike, James Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and more.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks had a fan-favorite crossover episode in SNW season 2 in which Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome portrayed their Lower Decks voice characters in live action in a time travel episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 news and release date

Hannah Cowton

Captain Pike and his crew are coming back for another season of Strange New Worlds, one of the newer Star Trek shows in a raft of series in what’s fast becoming a new golden age for the franchise.

Strange New Worlds picks up a few key cast members from the second season of Discovery to explore the adventures of the USS Enterprise before Kirk inherited the captain’s chair. Here is everything we know about the next season.

When is the release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

Paramount+ has confirmed that the second season of Strange New Worlds will air on 15 June 2023 , with ten episodes in total. These will likely roll out weekly.

The show has also been renewed for ten more episodes, which means we will also be getting a third season in the future.

It’s not the last Trek show on the way though – we still have the teased Star Trek: Section 31 spin-off starring Michelle Yeoh in the pipeline, and animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for its third season this summer.

Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

There isn’t yet a full trailer for the new season, but there is a first look focusing on Erica Ortega:

How can I watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

In the UK, US, Latin America, Australia, and the Nordics, you’ll want to use Paramount+ , while in Canada the show is on the CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Crave. UK Sky customers can get Paramount+ for free .

Outside those markets, for the most part you’ll have to wait until Paramount+ launches where you are in order to watch the show officially.

If you don’t want to wait, the good news is that there is a way to watch Paramount+ from other countries in the meantime. It’ll take a VPN and a little bit of effort, but that’s probably better than having the whole show spoiled for you by fans from other countries.

Who are the cast and crew of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Here’s the current ship’s roster from season one – we expect most of these to return in season two:

  • Captain Christopher Pike: Anson Mount
  • Number One: Rebecca Romijn
  • Spock: Ethan Peck
  • Dr. M’Benga: Babs Olusanmokun
  • Nurse Christine Chapel: Jess Bush
  • Cadet Nyota Uhura: Celia Rose Gooding
  • La’an Noonien-Singh: Christina Chong
  • Erica Ortegas: Melissa Navia

In addition to the returning cast, there is a huge addition for season two: Paul Wesley will appear in the show playing one James T Kirk after guest starring in the season one finale.

Strange New Worlds Kirk

Wesley talked a little more about Kirk’s role to at comic-con: “We only saw Kirk really for a handful of scenes in the finale. That specific episode was fairly intense, and if you watch the original ‘Balance of Terror’, Kirk is quite intense in that episode.

“I’m looking forward to viewers seeing a different side of Kirk – and certainly not an alternate timeline Kirk, but a lieutenant. So he’s a much younger Kirk. He certainly hasn’t developed into the Captain Kirk that we know.”

Therefore, we expect his role to be more involved that just a cameo this time around.

As for behind the camera, here’s who we believe will be back:

  • Director: Akiva Goldsman
  • Writer: Akiva Goldsman
  • Writer: Alex Kurtzman
  • Writer: Jenny Lumet

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

There is a lot in store for Strange New Worlds season two. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman has teased a “bigger and better” season two, with more major plot swings than what we’ve seen before. The biggest will likely come from the introduction of Kirk, who we believe will be shaking things up on the USS Enterprise.

There will be more genre-bending episodes according to Collider . This is further supported by the confirmation that there will be a bizarre crossover with the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks at comic-con . The Strange New Worlds crew will still be in their live-action forms – though Mount did joke that we would see a “an extremely buff two-dimensional version” of Pike.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds rumours

At the end of last season, Number One was imprisoned for lying about being an Illyrian to Starfleet. Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told Inverse that this is a subject that is “hanging over everything”. This, combined with Hemmer’s death and La’an’s departure will create numerous serialised plot threads. However, rest assured the viewers can still expect the usual adventure of the week style episodes.

Ethan Peck also teased at comic-con that there are some big things in store for Spock: “…we’ll see Spock really wrestle with his human side much more. He will continue his experimentation with his human emotions, and it will sort of lead to fundamental changes in some very important relationships in his life.”

We will also see a different version of Pike in the next season, after being visited by his older self. Mount told Esquire the following: “I would say he’s more resolute after the finale of Season One… when he realizes there’s no honorable way out, that’s a relief. The older Pike made it very clear: you still have a choice. But to somebody like Pike, it isn’t a choice. So this is a choice that almost makes itself, and it is a tremendous relief. He doesn’t have to worry about it anymore. His job now is to make every day count as much as possible. There’s a lot of freedom in that.”

One of the best reasons to have a Paramount+ subscription is so you can access the modern era of Star Trek TV. Ever since Star Trek: Discovery premiered on then-CBS All Access in 2017, the small screen corner of the sci-fi franchise has been revitalized, with some of the other shows including Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks . Well, there’s some good news and bad news that’s come in today. Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4, but Lower Decks will be ending.

For those of you who’ve enjoyed watching the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise in the immediate years ahead of The Original Series , there’s yet another batch of episodes on the way, though it’ll be a while until that specific group arrives since Strange New Worlds Season 3 isn’t expected to premiere until 2025. Unfortunately, those of you who have enjoyed the comedic hijinks of Boimlier, Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford on the animated Lower Decks must now prepare for the last hurrah with Season 5, which will premiere later this year on the 2024 TV schedule . Executive producers Mike McMahan and Alex Kurtzman released the following statement regarding the news:

We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off. Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting “LOWER DECKS!” We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures. LLAP

Now it is worth noting that Star Trek: Lower Decks ending shouldn’t come as a complete shock. Last October, Mike McMahan told CinemaBlend’s own Mick Joest that he wasn’t sure if Season 6 was in the cards , saying that “ you shouldn’t assume that this stuff is gonna stick around unless you vocally and watch it early on.” Sure enough, Season 5 will be the show’s last, so hopefully the writers were able to craft a conclusive ending rather than leave fans with any lingering plot threads.

Star Trek: Lower Decks crew

All this being said, just because Star Trek: Lower Decks is ending doesn’t mean we’ll never see its characters again. After all, Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome played Boimler and Mariner in live-action for last year’s Strange New Worlds / Lower Decks crossover , so perhaps there’ll be another opportunity for them to return to that show or some other live-action venue. Maybe they could even be joined by costars like Noël Wells or Eugene Cordero. And then, of course, these characters could simply keep being explored in books and comic book series.

As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Season 2 ended with Pike being forced to decide whether he should follow Starfleet’s orders and retreat from the battle with the Horn, or defy them to save his captured crew members. So with Season 3 needing to resolve that plot thread and explore various other stories, it’ll obviously be a while until we learn what Season 4 holds in store.

The upcoming Star Trek TV shows lineup also includes Starfleet Academy , and the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 movie will also exclusively play on Paramount+. Meanwhile, the theatrical side of the franchise is beginning development on a Star Trek origins movie , so keep visiting CinemaBlend for the biggest updates on all these projects.

Bill Maher Applauds William Shatner For Controversial ‘Star Trek’ Interracial Kiss

Patrick stewart was asked to wear a wig at his ‘star trek’ audition — a wig that flew by itself from heathrow to lax, tom hardy “never said ‘good morning'” or “good night” while filming ‘star trek: nemesis,’ says patrick stewart, stream it or skip it: ‘star trek: lower decks’ season 4 on paramount+, featuring the continuing (mis)adventures of starfleet’s proudest platoon members.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 at Paramount+ , despite currently being in production on its third season.

On the other hand, it has been revealed that the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , will end with Season 5 on the streaming platform. The final season will premiere this fall.

Strange New Worlds centers around Capt. Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) is the USS Enterprise commander at this point in the Star Trek universe. He is joined by younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock ( Ethan Peck ), Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ), and Kirk ( Paul Wesley ).

It debuted in 2022 and had an epic second season that included a musical episode and a crossover episode with Lower Decks , helping it climb aboard Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement according to Variety . “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Lower Decks is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and centers around the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D’Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ).

The series also featured voice cameos from several Star Trek alumni including George Takei , Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Although some aspects of the storyline make it appropriate to conclude the show, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan are leaving the hull open for future iterations.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” they said in a message to fans. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is slated to premiere in 2025.
