Road Trip and Weather Conditions for Interstate I-70

I-70 is a major highway that starts in Baltimore, Maryland and heads west through Washington D.C., crossing into Virginia. The highway continues through the Shenandoah Valley before reaching West Virginia. I-70 then crosses through the Appalachian Mountains, entering into Ohio. The highway passes Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati before reaching Indiana. I-70 then enters Illinois, passing through Indianapolis before reaching St. Louis, Missouri. The highway then continues through Kansas before reaching Colorado. I-70 then crosses the Rocky Mountains before entering into Utah. Once in Utah, I-70 continues until its terminus in Cove Fort, UT.

I-70 is 2,151 miles long and traverses 10 states. The highway has a maximum speed limit of 75 mph in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

I-70 is a major east-west highway that connects many cities and states across the United States. The highway sees a mix of different types of traffic, including local traffic, long distance travelers, and commercial trucking traffic, as I-70 is a critical route for cross-country travel.

I-70 Road Conditions

I-70 is subject to a variety of different weather conditions depending on the time of year and location. In the eastern part of the country, I-70 may be affected by snow and ice in the winter months. In the western part of the country, I-70 may be affected by wildfires and smoke in the summer months. Travelers should always check the road conditions before embarking on a trip on I-70.

I-70 is generally a well-maintained highway, but there are always potential hazards to be aware of when driving. Poor weather conditions can create hazardous driving conditions, so it is important to be aware of the forecast and plan accordingly. Also, construction and maintenance can sometimes cause lane closures or delays, so it is important to check for potential delays before starting a trip.

If you are planning a trip on I-70, be sure to check the road conditions and plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

Whether you're looking to determine road conditions on I-70 in Kansas, Utah, Indiana, or any of the other seven states the route traverses, our interactive map above, as well as our Highway Weather app, are great resources to prepare for any trip that takes you along Interstate 70!

Colorado’s I-70 mountain corridor expected to be ‘slow moving’ this weekend as skiers seek fresh powder

Winter storm warning is in effect for much of the mountains, which can expect 1 to 2 feet of snow this weekend.

i 70 travel forecast

The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning that a winter storm could meet heavy ski traffic along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor this weekend.

Between 1 and 2 feet of snow is forecasted for much of the Colorado Rocky Mountains over the weekend. The winter storm is expected to overlap with ski traffic on the I-70 corridor Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3, the department said in a news release.

Before hitting the roads, drivers need to ensure their vehicle is fully equipped, including with chains or the proper tread tires , to handle winter weather, CDOT Director of Maintenance and Operations John Lorme said in the release.

“Traveling along Colorado’s mountain roads, specifically the I-70 mountain corridor, will be challenging this weekend, not only because of the winter weather that is predicted but due to heavy traffic as folks make their way up to take advantage of the snow,” Lorme said.

Additionally, the National Weather Service as issued a Winter Storm Warning through most of the mountains west of the Continental Divide, including most of Summit, Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Routt, Garfield and Pitkin counties and the southwest mountains as well. The warning runs through 5 am. Sunday, Feb. 4

During the last major storm cycle over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, gridlock traffic “paralyzed” the town of Silverthorne. I-70 became a “parking lot” of bumper-to-bumper traffic for parts of the holiday weekend and there were multiple mountain pass closures , including U.S. Highway 40’s Berthoud Pass, where an avalanche caught 10 vehicles .

Travelers could encounter slow traffic again this weekend. OpenSnow meteorologist Sam Collentine wrote in a travel forecast for I-70 that the wet and slushy road surfaces early in the storm will turn into icy and snow-packed road surfaces lasting through at least Sunday morning.

This weekend, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center is urging backcountry recreationists not to recreate along roadsides, including popular spots such as Berthoud Pass, according to the news release. This is not only for recreationists’ safety but for the safety of motorists who could be caught in skier-triggered slides.

i 70 travel forecast

Avalanche conditions will change throughout the weekend as the storm moves through the state and high avalanche danger is expected in most mountain areas from Saturday and lasting into Monday, the release states. Anyone traveling in the backcountry should check the forecast and carry an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel.

Drivers who encounter an avalanche while in their vehicle should stay in the vehicle with the windows rolled up, turn the vehicle off to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and call for help on a cell phone, the release states. Anyone driving over the weekend should plan ahead with extra water, food, coats, blankets and entertainment.

Motorists should avoid or limit driving during the brunt of the storm. Snow is predicted to make its way into Colorado’s northern and central mountains on Friday evening, lasting through Saturday night, the release states.

“It will be slow moving along the Corridor this weekend,” Lorme said. “So remember to be patient and make sure you are not the cause of road closures.”

DENVER – The spring storm that buried the Denver area in inches to feet of snow finally subsided Friday morning.

The snowfall was quite significant, with 5.7 inches officially recorded at Denver International.

"Getting some work done in Highlands Ranch, CO! Concrete snow with a heavy wet base. A couple of snowball fights then off to hit the ibuprofen bottle and some hot chocolate," posted Chris Scovil. All that work took him over an hour and a half and the snow is still falling.

However, that does not capture the scope of the event. As much as 9-10 inches of snow fell downtown, 1-2 feet fell in the eastern suburbs and more than 4 feet fell in the mountains. Nederland reported 53 inches as of Friday morning.

Flights canceled, highways closed due to snow

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed a 50-plus-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in both directions between the western side of the Denver metro and Silverthorne , Colorado, on Tuesday due to safety concerns from the winter weather . Most of the interstate had reopened Friday, though commercial vehicles were also prohibited driving from Vail to Morrison through at least noon.

"We're having trouble with commercial motor vehicles," Matthew Inzeo of the Colorado DOT told FOX Weather Thursday. "Those 18-wheelers who aren't following the law are trying to sneak through and not put chains on their tires, and that's not doing too well when you've got conditions this extreme."

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

I-25 was no better on Thursday. The Colorado State Patrol posted on social media, "Don’t be fooled! It’s icy and snow-packed. Ramps and side streets are even worse!"

Inzeo said the DOT's 1,600 crews were working around the clock on 12-and-a-half-hour shifts until the storm moved out, and every lane was clear. The state has a total of 875 plows, of which 100 are dedicated to Denver and another 40 handling the "ski corridor" which is from Denver to the Continental Divide past ski resorts.

Colorado Springs officials warned that residential streets might not be plowed until Saturday.

Additionally, more than 800 flight cancelations, almost half of all inbound and outbound flights, were reported at Denver International Airport as of Thursday morning, according to FlightAware .

i 70 travel forecast

This powerful winter storm comes three years to the day Denver saw its last high-impact snowstorm , when the Mile High City saw well over 2 feet of snow during the storm on March 14, 2021.

Lingering snow showers to cause issues

While the snow is mostly done in Denver, a potent upper-level low will continue to spin above the region Friday, bringing snow to the mountains of the Four Corners states, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Travel along I-40 in Arizona and New Mexico will become hazardous in spots into Saturday as pockets of heavy snow develop.

The upper-level low, cut off from the jet stream, will have nothing to move it along. As a result, it'll continue to spin over the region right into next week. Low-elevation rain showers and high-elevation snow will be present every day, the FOX Forecast Center said.

A lack of moisture will keep the showers light, so snow amounts should be manageable, and no flooding is expected. Still, more than a foot of snow is likely across the region's highest peaks.

Editor’s note 7 a.m. Friday : This story will no longer be updated. See the latest Colorado road conditions , a look at Friday’s forecast , the latest snow totals from across the state and a look at how yesterday’s snow affected Colorado .

Treacherous driving conditions are expected to continue overnight as a winter storm could drop up to 14 more inches of snow on the Front Range foothills, according to the National Weather Service.

Interstate 70 was closed in both directions throughout the day as a winter storm dropped several feet of snow along the Front Range mountains and foothills, causing crashes, spin-outs and hazardous driving conditions.

I-70 will remain closed to commercial vehicles between Eagle/Vail and Morrison until noon Friday, the agency announced just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

Interstate 25 over Monument Hill may be closed for safety concerns Thursday evening, according to CDOT.

Citing the current storm track, state officials issued a travel alert around 12:35 p.m., asking travelers to be prepared for highway closures and extended delays and to have food, water, blankets and other needed items in their vehicles.

Drivers can expect hazardous or impossible conditions in the mountains, foothills and Denver metro through Friday morning, according to state transportation officials . Road closures are likely on I-70, I-25 and U.S. 285.

A 33-year-old man was arrested after ignoring a road closure on U.S. 40 over Berthoud Pass, evading police and later crashing into a snow plow, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The man evaded a Grand County sergeant who tried to pull him over after he failed stop at the road closure. The man later crashed into a snow plow that was attempting to shield other vehicles about 5 miles east of the Berthoud Pass summit, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man tried to flee on foot and was arrested on traffic charges and an unrelated arrest warrant.

Portions of I-70 closed in Colorado mountains as winter storm expected to bring feet of snow

By Jennifer McRae, Kasey Richardson

Updated on: March 14, 2024 / 8:59 AM MDT / CBS Colorado

The winter storm hitting Colorado is expected to bring feet of snow to some areas of the mountains and that has led to some road closures along the I-70 mountain corridor.

Highway closures include:

  • I-70 eastbound near Silver Plume : Road closed. Updated Today at 6:57 PM MDT by Colorado Department of Transportation Between Exit 226: Silver Plume and Exit 228: CR 381; Georgetown (Silver Plume) at Mile Point 226. Road closed expect delays due to a stalled vehicle.
  • I-70 westbound in Georgetown: Between Exit 232: US 40; Empire Junction and Exit 228: CR 381 at Mile Point 228
  • I-70 in both directions near Genesee: Road closed. Between Exit 254: US 40; Genesee and Exit 256: Lookout Mountain (Genesee) at Mile Point 255.5. Road closed expect delays due to a crash.
  • I-70 in both directions near Morrison: Between Exit 259: Morrison Road and Exit 260: C-470 (1 mile west of Golden) at Mile Point 259. Road closed expect delays due to safety concerns.
  • I-70 eastbound near East Frisco and Silverthorne: Between Exit 203: CO 9; East Frisco and Exit 205: US 6; CO 9; Silverthorne (Silverthorne) at Mile Point 205. Road closed expect delays due to safety concerns.
  • I-70 eastbound near Silverthorne and Loveland Pass:  Between Exit 205: US 6; CO 9; Silverthorne and Exit 216: US 6; Loveland Pass (5 miles east of Silverthorne) at Mile Point 210.7. Road closed expect delays due to a stalled vehicle.

Snow totals for the Mile High City could be as  high as 16 inches of snow and Foothills areas could see as much as 20 inches .

According to First Alert Meteorologists, Palmer Divide communities could see up to 2 feet, while some mountain areas -- above 7,000 feet -- could see 4 feet of snow.

winter-alerts.png

Winter Storm Watches are now in place for parts of Northern Colorado, and areas east of Denver along Interstate 70 through Friday morning. There is more uncertainty with snow totals due to upsloping, but areas east of Denver could see 6-12 inches, with Northern Colorado likely to receive 4 to 12 inches.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS:  School closings across Colorado

Drivers are urged to check the latest travel conditions on the Colorado Department of Transportation's COTrip website  before heading out. CDOT officials are urging people to stay home and stay off the roads.

Depending on the path of the storm, officials are planning for safety closures on Interstate 25 near Monument and Colorado Springs as well as US 285 at Fairplay and I-70 from Golden to the Eisenhower Tunnel.

CDOT-snow-plows-on-the-road.jpeg

CDOT's philosophy is that the fewer cars on the roads, the fewer chances there are for crashes. Uncrowded roads also make it easier for snowplows to clear the way.

Treacherous driving conditions have led to multiple closures with more to come Thursday

Winter travel alert.

Statewide- Several highways across the Denver metro area and high country are closed due to adverse conditions and crashes. Road conditions vary, but most highways are snowpacked and slushy making driving conditions difficult.

Keeping the roads open as much as possible will be an all-hands-on-deck effort. CDOT urged drivers to stay off the road when possible during heavy periods of snow and to make sure that vehicles venturing into the snow are equipped for the conditions. For example, numerous instances of jack-knifed semi trucks, many without chains, have led to numerous closures on key thoroughfares like I-70. If travelers must head out, be sure to maintain slower speeds, keep plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead and use extreme caution. There may be a lull in weather early this morning in the Denver metro area, but motorists should be warned that snow conditions are expected to pick back up later in the morning.

Below are the closures that are currently in place as of 8 a.m.:

  • I-70 in both directions between Morrison and Silverthorne because of adverse conditions and semi-truck crashes due to lack of chains.
  • US 285 just south of C-470 is closed due to a jackknifed semi truck.
  • Highway 119 is closed due to adverse conditions. Power outages have been reported.
  • US 40 Berthoud Pass and US 6 Loveland Pass are closed due to adverse conditions, avalanche recovery after a natural slide occurred overnight and additional
  • winter operations will be necessary to make sure that the roads are safe to reopen.
  • US 40/I-70 Frontage Road is closed.

I-25 between Castle Rock and northern Colorado Springs and roads in the Palmer Divide communities are particularly treacherous and have received over 10” of snow, making driving conditions very difficult. The winter storm will continue throughout the day and roads may become worse, especially as more folks take to the roads. The storm is tracking as forecasted. Friday morning ski traffic will be affected.

Pavement Impacts

Front range mountains.

  • Peak impacts: Wednesday night to Thursday night
  • Winds: Moderate
  • Snowfall Rates: 1”/hour+
  • Pavement Condition: Snowpacked/icy

Southwest Colorado

  • Peak impacts: Thursday afternoon to Friday night
  • Snowfall Rates: Moderate to heavy
  • Pavement Conditions: Snowpacked/icy and then will turn to slushy/wet

North of the Palmer Divide

  • Winds: Moderate/gusty
  • Pavement Conditions: Wet/slushy and then will turn to snowpacked/icy

South of the Palmer Divide

  • Peak Impacts: Early Thursday to Friday morning
  • Rates: Moderate to heavy

Looking for Road Conditions? Go to COtrip!

For real-time updates, motorists should use COtrip.org or the COtrip Planner app for the latest road closures and conditions. CDOT’s social media channels, especially X (formerly Twitter), will not be updated with real-time information. Chain and Traction Laws are in place in the high country and can be seen on these platforms as well.

Storm total snow amounts statewide map as of 6 a.m. Thursday, March 14.

Winter Travel Tips for Motorists

  • Avoid or limit driving during the brunt of the storm on Thursday.
  • Work from home if you can.
  • If you plan to travel, know before you go by checking out the latest weather conditions and visiting   COtrip.org   for road conditions (see info sources below).
  • Make sure your vehicle is winter ready with the appropriate tires for the weather and have a snow emergency kit.
  • Once you are out on the road, take it slow, no sudden stops and leave plenty of following distance.
  • Give plows space! Stay back three to four car lengths from snow plows.

Safety Closures

A safety closure is a precaution taken during inclement weather to reduce the probability of traffic incidents, increased congestion or other safety-related factors. During a safety closure, traffic may be stopped on the interstate, turned around or directed to an exit. Safety closures help decrease delay times, and, above all, keep travelers safe.

Chain & Traction Laws

When weather conditions warrant, CDOT will activate the Traction Law. If weather conditions deteriorate, CDOT will activate Chain Laws for passenger and commercial vehicles. Motorists will be alerted to an active Traction or Chain Law by highway signage,  COtrip.org  and traffic/roadway condition alerts. For more information on the Traction Law and Passenger Vehicle Chain Law requirements, visit  codot.gov/travel/winter- driving/tractionlaw . For more information on the Commercial Vehicle Chain Law requirements, visit  codot.gov/travel/colorado- chain-law . To learn more and view helpful tips for winter driving, visit  winter.codot.gov .

COtrip.org & COtrip Planner App

If motorists must head out during this winter storm, they are urged to visit COtrip.org and download the COtrip Planner app ahead of time. Motorists are now able to sign up for travel alerts through COtrip.org to see if there are any highway closures or impacts along their favorite routes. The COtrip Planner app also offers a “Trip Planner” feature that allows motorists to map out their routes and receive updates about road closures or incidents along the way. Motorists can turn on the “Hands-Free, Eyes Free” feature to receive these alerts via voice notifications and avoid routes with impacts.

The free  COtrip Planner  mobile app was designed to meet the growing trend of information on mobile and tablet devices for the traveling public. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on mobile devices that operate on the iOS and Android platforms. Visit the  Google Play Store  (Android devices) or the  Apple Store  (iOS devices) to download!

Know Before You Go

Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road. CDOT resources include:

FORECAST: Cooler and breezy Sunday, even colder early next week

Weather headlines.

  • Highs in the mid 50s Sunday afternoon
  • Widespread freeze expected Monday and Tuesday morning
  • Most stay dry until late next week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - More clouds roll in tonight thanks to a cold front passing through WAVE Country. That will keep temperatures from dropping past the upper 30s and low 40s Sunday morning.

You’ll feel the effects of tonight’s cold front on Sunday. We’ll be about 10 degrees cooler for afternoon highs. It will be breezy with gusts approaching 20 MPH throughout the day. Clouds stick around Sunday night but temperatures tumble quickly. A hard freeze is possible with lows in the 20s. Take care of your plants!

Monday is the last day of winter and it sure will feel like it! Skies stay mostly cloudy keeping highs in the 40s. A northwest breeze will make it feel even colder. A few flurries could fly Monday but most stay dry and temperatures stay well above freezing.

After a cold start on Tuesday morning, we’ll begin a warm up by the afternoon with highs in the mid 50s. Aside from Monday’s flurry chance, our forecast is dry until Thursday night and Friday. Shower chances are at their highest on Friday before tapering off early Saturday. There’s no warm weather in the extended forecast as highs only peak in the low to mid 60s next weekend.
