Top things to do in labadee, lounge on the beach.

The Dragon’s Breath zipline is a must-do activity for thrill-seekers, spanning the entire length of Labadee. Whether you’re an experienced zipliner or a beginner, you’ll never forget the island and ocean views from this nearly 3,000-foot zipline adventure.
Top Food & Drink Spots Near the Labadee Cruise Port
Labadee’s culinary scene is centered around the concept of comforting barbeque foods, Haitian classics, and easy lunches. It’s laid-back here, and you can enjoy finer dining onboard and as you travel to other destinations on your cruise. For those with inclusive food and beverage packages, dining on the island is all part of the package. There are also eight bars on the island for your beverage needs, complete with signature cocktails and virgin drinks for those who prefer non-alcoholic options.
Culture & History of the Labadee Cruise Port
Before it became well known as a beach destination for cruisers, Labadee was stylized as “Labadie”. Royal Caribbean purchased the island with the intent to make it a private, exclusive beach escape for a romantic getaway or fun for the entire family. On a cruise to Haiti, Labadee is a great destination for lounging and water adventures.
Labadee Port Facilities & Location
Labadee is a privately operated island, and you’ll be tendered ashore from your cruise ship onto the islands for a day of beachy delights, barbeque, and family fun. Beach chairs are complimentary for visitors, and it’s easily navigable thanks to shuttle services and walkable beaches.
Transportation in Labadee
This fantastic private beach is fairly walkable for visitors on a cruise to Haiti. There’s a free tram/shuttle service for cruise passengers. There’s also a water taxi available to the furthest beach, called Columbus Cove. In general, it’s not difficult to navigate on foot here.
Shopping Near the Labadee Cruise Port
For shopping, head to the Artisan Market, a general store, and the Artisan Village, an open-air market. Haggling is welcomed here. You’ll find standard souvenirs and a few handmade Haitian goods to choose from.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
In Labadee, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. The official currency in Haiti is the gourde, and five Haitian gourdes are equivalent to one Haitian dollar (H$). The gourde is stylized on menus as the HTG. Credit cards are widely accepted at most major establishments, and ATMs are readily available in larger towns like Port-au-Prince. When in Haiti, haggling at markets and shops is common. Don’t forget to leave a small tip for an excellent cab experience, and service charges are typically already included in restaurant bills.

7 Cruises to Jamaica and the Surrounding Caribbean
Enjoy the island spirit on a cruise to the land of reggae and rum.
Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, and if you've ever lounged on one of the island's gorgeous beaches with a fruit-filled rum punch in hand, it's easy to understand why. It helps that Jamaica is extremely accessible. You can fly there (direct from New York City in four hours, at that), but many prefer the experience of island hopping via a Caribbean cruise.
The major cruise ports of Jamaica are Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and Kingston. On the northeastern coast, there's also Port Antonio, which isn't suitable for most large ships but attracts boutique cruise lines and private yachts.
Whether you're interested in discovering pirate history, hiking through the rain forest to see waterfalls, or searching for the best jerk chicken on the island, you're bound to find a cruise itinerary that suits you. Here are some of the best Jamaica-inclusive Caribbean cruises .
Viking Ocean Cruises, Panama Canal and Central America; 15 Days
A round trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this cruise stops in seven countries. The ship sails the Caribbean for two days before making its first stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where cruise-goers can plan to hike the rain forest, visit Dunn's River Falls, or ride a bamboo raft down the Great River, among other excursions. The cruise offers activities for foodies, thrill seekers, history buffs, and beach bums.
After departing Montego Bay, the ship sails the Caribbean and Panama Canal for two days before making its next stop at Colón, Panama, for an optional visit to Indigenous villages or a walk around the colorful city. The following stops — Puerto Limón, Costa Rica ; Roatán, off the coast of Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel , Mexico — showcase the Caribbean's lushest landscapes, ancient Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, and lively towns.
Between ports, a historian teaches about pirates and treasure hunters, pre-Columbian civilizations, and the Age of Discovery aboard the 930-guest Viking Mars . When you aren't attending a lecture, you can indulge in a treatment at the Nordic spa, catch a live performance in the theater, order a martini at the 1940s-inspired bar, or partake in Waffle Hour in the Explorers' Lounge.
Carnival Cruise Line, Western Caribbean; 5 Days
This cruise aboard the Carnival Sunrise departs from Miami for a day at sea before arriving in Grand Cayman. On the island, you can visit a rum cake factory or go snorkeling. After leaving the Cayman Islands , the ship moves on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where excursions include swimming with dolphins, river tubing, zip lining, and horseback riding along the shore. The ship then spends another day at sea before arriving back in Miami.
Onboard dining options include a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, Guy's (as in Guy Fieri's) Burger Joint, a barbecue spot, a cantina, and a sushi joint. Adults can find a quiet spot in the 21-and-up Serenity Retreat, or they can get together in a pub, lounge, or piano bar.
For kids, Seuss at Sea provides a character parade, interactive story time, themed breakfasts, and crafting sessions. Meanwhile, Camp Ocean offers supervised activities like games, songs, dancing, movies, video games, and kids-only meals.
Oceania Cruises, Classic Panama Canal; 11 Days
Travel from Panama City to Miami on Oceania Cruises' Sirena , stopping along the South American coast along the way. The first stop after a day of sailing through the Panama Canal is Cartagena, Colombia , where cruise-goers can hop off the ship to see mansions and a historic fort. The following day is dedicated to Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city.
The ship then visits Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curacao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire, before turning its bow to the north, toward Florida. After a day of sailing the Caribbean, Sirena drops anchor at Port Antonio, Jamaica, the gateway to Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Guests get a chance to hike, swim, and explore the town square for a day before embarking on another long sail — this time on the Atlantic. A day trip in Nassau, Bahamas , is the perfect penultimate stop before you reach your final destination, Miami.
During days at sea, Sirena keeps up to 648 guests entertained with a pool, theater, casino, and spa, as well as a wide variety of restaurants and an afternoon tea tradition.
Royal Caribbean International, Western Caribbean and Perfect Day; 6 Nights
This cruise leaves Orlando and, after a day at sea, stops in Labadee, Haiti, where activities range from riding a toboggan-style roller coaster to zip lining over the ocean. From there, the ship travels to Falmouth, Jamaica, located between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, for options like horseback riding, river tubing, hiking to a waterfall, and high tea at the historical Good Hope Estate.
After it departs Jamaica, the ship again spends the day at sea. Between ports, travelers can enjoy the spa, fitness center, live performances, kids' activities, and a variety of restaurants aboard the Mariner of the Seas . Following the cruising day is a stop at Royal Caribbean's private CocoCay in the Bahamas. Fill your "Perfect Day" chasing adventure at Thrill Waterpark, where you can ride down North America's tallest waterslide, or relaxing in an overwater cabana at Coco Beach Club. The cay is also home to Chill Island, a beach "neighborhood" where you'll find quiet relaxation, cabana rentals, and restaurants. The next morning, the ship arrives back in Orlando.
Disney Cruise Line, Western Caribbean Cruise; 7 Nights
Consider taking a tour of the Kennedy Space Center before boarding the Disney Fantasy in Cape Canaveral. The first full day of this cruise is spent at sea, but pools, a spa, kids' clubs, restaurants, games, and entertainment provide much to do on the way to Cozumel. Upon arrival in Mexico, guests get the chance to snorkel or dive among coral reefs, shop for handmade souvenirs, and relax on the beach.
The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where you can explore botanic gardens, swim at Seven Mile Beach, or visit the town's shops and restaurants. In Falmouth, Jamaica, the next day, optional activities include a zip-line adventure, waterfall hike, catamaran cruise, horseback ride, or dolphin encounter. The next day at sea is a time to enjoy the ship's amenities while cruising to Disney Castaway Cay.
On this private island reserved for Disney Cruise Line guests, there is a water play area, white-sand beach, walking trails, snorkeling lagoon, boat rentals, teen hideout, and adults-only Serenity Bay. After departing Castaway Cay, the ship cruises overnight to arrive back at Port Canaveral the following day.
Celebrity Cruises, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico; 6 Nights
Departing from Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Reflection spends the first day at sea, giving guests the opportunity to relax in the spa, pool, and solarium. Cozumel is the first stop; the island's coral reef is ideal for snorkeling and diving, while deep-sea fishing is also an option. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can ferry to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, shop for local-made souvenirs, or dine on fresh seafood and Mexican specialties.
The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where guests can shop, go on a catamaran cruise, snorkel, or sample the island's cuisine, including conch. From there, the ship heads to Falmouth, Jamaica. Aside from touring the historic town, there's a wide range of activities: take a trip to the Green Grotto Caves and Dunn's River Falls, ride a horse along the beach, swim with dolphins, or go tubing or zip lining. The next day is spent at sea, with time to enjoy the ship's restaurants, casino, cocktail lounges, and entertainment, before arriving back at Fort Lauderdale the following morning.
MSC Cruises, Western Caribbean; 14 Nights
MSC Divina 's 14-night Western Caribbean itinerary varies slightly from sailing to sailing, but one sample schedule goes as follows: After departing from Miami, the first stop is Nassau, Bahamas, where guests might like to kick off their two-week vacation with a VIP cabana experience on Blue Lagoon Island. The following day, Divina sails to the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a private destination with beachside spa treatments, snorkeling and diving opportunities, and an outdoor food court. The ship then returns to Miami for a day before continuing to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
In Ocho Rios, you can swim in the sparkling Iris Blue Hole or climb to the top of Konoko Falls. Another day at sea follows, during which guests can enjoy this modern, elegant ship with a casino, a spa, kids' and teens' clubs, restaurants, and bars. The next stop is Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site with cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings, followed by Colón, Panama. At the next port of call, Puerto Limón, Costa Rica, guests get the day to explore and take a boat adventure through the jungle, looking for crocodiles, monkeys, and manatees.
From there, the ship spends another day at sea, one day in Roatán, Honduras, and then a final day at sea en route back to Ocean Cay. Following one more day of MSC guests-only fun, the ship returns to Miami the next morning for disembarkation.

Port Labadee Haiti cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Labadee Haiti, Royal Caribbean private island. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Labadee is an exclusive (privately-owned) Caribbean island port and resort destination located on Haiti's northern coast. This "private island" (area sized 260 acres/105 hectares) is leased until 2050 to the company RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (now RCG-Royal Caribbean Group). Since 1986, RCCL has contributed the biggest proportion of tourist revenue to Haiti, employing 300 locals, allowing another 200 to sell wares on the premises for a fee, and also paying the government of Haiti USD 12 per ship tourist.
As an exclusive destination, at Labadee can dock and disembark passengers/crew only liners from the fleets of RCI-Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises . The first liner that visited Labadee since the COVID crisis started (March 2020) was Harmony OTS - on January 27, 2022.
The resort is entirely tourism-oriented and guarded by a private security force. Cruisers are not allowed to leave the property - the site is fenced off from the surrounding area and food available to travelers is brought from the ships. Controlled Haitian merchants are given the sole rights to sell merchandise and establish businesses in the resort. Though sometimes described in advertisements as an island, Labadee is actually a peninsula contiguous with Hispaniola Island. The cruise ships moor to the pier at Labadee which was completed in late 2009 and is capable of servicing Oasis-class ships.
Labadee attractions include beaches, watersports, a water-oriented playground, an alpine coaster, a zip line, and a Haitian flea market.
Royal Caribbean ships arrive in Labadee at ~8 am. Disembarkation is after breakfast on the ship. Lunch is Labadee BBQ (including veggie burgers) starting at 11 am. Dining options also include salads, fast food (burgers, hot dogs), chicken, fresh-made food.
Purchases can be made via SeaPass (boarding cards), except craft markets selling locally-made merchandise for cash. Shopping on Labadee is available at Artisan Market (fixed prices store for handmade goods) and Artisan Village (outdoor market with negotiable prices). Both are cash-only shopping options.
- Labadee's most popular attraction is the zip-line Dragon's Breath Flight Line. It starts from the mountain-top launch platform and allows speeds up to 50 mph (80 kph). Nature trails are also among the most common activities, along with parasailing, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, alpine coaster riding, DreamWorks Safari. All these shore excursions can be booked prior the voyage (via RCI's Cruise Planner).
- Renting private cabanas or beach bungalows is also very popular among tourists. These beachside accommodations provide privacy and can be booked either online (before the voyage, via RCI's Cruise Planner) or while on the ship. Beach beds and loungers are the other local rental options.
- Columbus Cove Beach is the least crowded. Due to the large walking distance from the docking pier, tourists often use the quick and complimentary ferry ride to Columbus Cove.
- Barefoot Beach is an exclusive beach (reserved for Grand Suite and above cruise ship passengers) served by its own lunch buffet restaurant.
- At Adrenaline Beach there is a swim-up bar.
- Adventure Ocean Oasis (at Adrenaline Beach) is a kids splash area equipped with water toys, fountains and geysers. The facility is part of RCI's onboard kids program "Adventure Ocean" for supervised children's activities. Other kids' playgrounds are the Arawak Aqua Park (at Columbus Cove, with water slides, floating trampolines and pyramids) and Dragon's Splash Waterslide (Columbus Cove, featuring a 300 ft / 90 m long water slide ending into a splash zone.
Just like shipboard, Royal Caribbean beverage packages are all valid on Labadee too.
For touring Labadee, RCI provides complimentary shuttles all along the resort island. Tram stops are clearly marked.
In 2017 (August through October), Royal Caribbean made enhancements to Labadee's Adrenaline Beach. Works started on August 14 and included adding new reef balls to restore ailing coral reefs and create new scuba diving and snorkeling paths for cruise ship tourists. There were no works during all scheduled ship visits to the island. During the Adrenaline Beach redevelopment were also added cabanas.
Curiously, on Labadee there is a crew-only beach (located south of Columbus Cove Beach). Named "Belly Beach", it can be accessed only by boat (leaving from the jet-ski landing) and is exclusive to cruise ship crew members. Belly Beach is private (not owned by Royal Caribbean) so food and beverages there cost extra and are provided from an a la carte-priced menu at an open-air restaurant.
Barefoot Beach cabanas
Barefoot Beach on Labadee is an RCCL private beach property with exclusive access for Suite passengers and Pinnacle members of the company's "Crown & Anchor Society" loyalty program.
The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis). These cabanas can be reserved via the ship's Concierge or the onboard Shore Excursions desk.
Follows the list of cabanas as types and rental prices (per cabana) at the Barefoot Beach: Standard (USD 295), Beachfront and Hilltop (USD 395), Over Water (USD 495). Reservations are full-day.
Each cabana has max capacity 6 people, 2 lounge chairs, a large indoor seating area. The list of price-inclusive amenities includes assigned attendant, complimentary amenities (towels, bottled water in cooler, snorkeling gear, 2 floating mats, hammocks, golf cart), private BBQ buffet exclusive access.
- Standard cabanas are also wheelchair accessible (with 2 steps only).
- Hilltop cabanas are the most private, featuring great panoramic views from above.
- Over Water cabanas have direct access to the sea and the beach.
- Beachfront cabanas are on the waterfront.
Nellie's Beach cabanas
Nellie's Beach is another RCCL private beach property with free access for all cabin types of passengers. The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis).
These cabanas can be reserved via Cruise Planner (at RCI's website) and are 2 types - "Beach" and "Over-Water". Rent prices are USD 395 (Beach Cabana) and USD 495 (Over Water Cabana). Over-Water cabanas are built on rock groupings and have walkways down to the sea.
All rental details and price-included amenities are the same as for the suite-only Barefoot Beach.
At Columbus Beach, there are new bungalows (similar to the cabanas). Bungalow's rental price is USD 225 per day.
Labadee Haiti cruise terminal
Labadee is most popular with its beaches and active fun. Among the most popular attractions and activities are:
- Dragon's Breath Zip-Line is the longest built over water - length 2600 ft (792 m), 500 ft (152 m) above the beach, zip-lining speed is 40-50 mph (65-80 kph).
- Arawak Aqua Park - among its best features are floating trampolines, inflatable pyramids, water slides, kids splash areas.
- Alpine Coaster (roller coaster) is located approx 700 ft (213 m) up on Santa Maria mountain. A single car vehicle races down at speeds of 30 mph (50 kph) with numerous turns, dips and waves.
- Parasailing - height is approx 400 ft (122 m) in the air.
- 3-hour Deep sea fishing tour is offered off the Labadee's coast on a private boat (26 ft / 8 m long), where you can catch large fish (like tuna, marlin, wahoo).

Harmony of the seas - 6 days. Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas

Hi all, we have booked cruise to Haiti, Jamaica and Bahamas by RoyalCaribbeans in march 2023 and if someone here had the same trip I will appreciate for some advices 🙂
What is really interesting for us is to explore the islands as much as it possible.
1. I've just realised that Haiti is almost closed so unfortunately if I understood it correctly We will stay only in Labadie... it's a pitty.
But still there are Jamaica and Bahamas.
2. For Jamaica we'd like to see 7 miles beach, but I see that we have time on the island from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Did someone went there during this trip? Any advices would be helpful
3. Bahamas, for us the best choice would be Pink Beach, but I'm not sure is it possible to get there between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. 😞 , if someone managed it, please share your experience.
If You have some other great ideas about this trip just share with us 🙂 thank you

Welcome to Cruise Critic. There are boards here for Ports f Call and you might do some research there in the Caribbean area. You might also see if there is a Roll Call for your cruise. Roll Calls are where other CC members who are on your same cruise can share ideas about activities. Are you sure there is a seven mile beach in Jamaica? The seven mile beach usually referred to is on Grand Cayman. There is also a separate Ports of Call board for the Bahamas. EM

Howdy Peter!
Welcome to Cruise Critic and thank you for your first new thread on the Ask a Cruise Question forum! However, it is the forum for g eneral questions regarding cruising. Your inquiry concerns specific ports of call and is off topic here.
Please remember the following stated in the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:
Browse Before You Post Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.
In your case a s others have stated, for any RCI research you need to go to the Royal Caribbean International forum. For Labadee, go to the Private Islands forum. You will need to go to the Jamaica and Bahamas forums too. Browse through the thread titles in the forums looking for threads of interest. You will probably find your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that may be of interest to you. If not, please feel free to post your inquiry in the proper forum.
Please remember, anytime you need to start a new thread/topic on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information, they will reply to you.
Also, it is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic such as one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your message as that sort of information will help your fellow Cruise Critic members help you.
The specific Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date will be the place for you to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you before your cruise. Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before. Also, there may be excursion or transportation share requests to save money posted in your Roll Call thread.
To explain our Roll Call threads and finding the Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date, please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call . Since you do not mention your specific Harmony of the Seas March sail date, I cannot direct you to the existing Roll Call thread for your specific cruise if one already exists. Use the Roll Call Finder Tool at the top of the Harmony of the Seas Roll Calls forum. Here is a clip so you will know what it looks like:
For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the Guidelines . We also have the following Cruise Critic article you might enjoy: 8 Reasons to Join a Cruise Critic Roll Call
And don't forget, after your cruise be sure to submit your review for publication by Cruise Critic. Many cruisers will benefit from your experience! See How To: Submit a Member Review .
So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope all this additional information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. Glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!
Happy sails,

Why Are Cruises Still Calling in a Haitian Port Amid Level 4 Advisory?
I n recent days, escalated strife in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince has garnered attention from around the world. Given the rampant gang violence and a mass prison break on March 3, the U.S. State Department reiterated its Level 4 Travel Advisory (“Do Not Travel”), while the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince issued a security alert advising all U.S. citizens to depart the country as soon as they could.
Yet, amid this backdrop of turmoil in the capital city, some cruise ships continue to make port calls at a private resort destination with stringent security measures and controlled access. This day-use property in Labadee, privately owned by Royal Caribbean , is situated on a secluded peninsula located approximately 130 miles (about a 6-hour drive) north of Port-au-Prince.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told CNN Travel that the company is carefully monitoring all activity in the area. However, Labadee is available exclusively to Royal Caribbean’s guests and employees. Travelers arrive by ship, disembark directly onto the resort property and are required to remain within the private destination during their entire time ashore. All shore excursions are also held within the private resort area, so none have been canceled.
“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area. At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement.
Scheduled calls into Labadee in the coming weeks include several prominent Royal Caribbean ships, such as Independence of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises , a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group, also features Labadee as a port of call for several of its vessels later in the year, including Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Ascent.
Still, given the elevated levels of concern about traveling to the troubled Caribbean country—whose government declared a state of national emergency after the escape of thousands of prison inmates earlier this month—should cruise passengers be concerned about setting foot on Haitian soil (or, sand, rather)?
But, Is It Safe?
Cruise Critic’s Editor-in-Chief, Colleen McDaniel, referred to Labadee as, “Royal Caribbean’s insulated private destination.” She emphasized, “As a cruise line private destination, Labadee is only accessible to cruise ship guests, and the experience is completely owned and run by the cruise line, using the destination to serve as an extension of the onboard experience.”
“That said, for any concerned travelers—whether traveling by land, air or sea—it’s always recommended to familiarize yourself with any travel alerts from your home country,” McDaniel added, noting that guests who still don’t feel safe with the onshore arrangements always have the option of staying onboard the ship. Ultimately, the choice about whether to disembark on Haitian shores is a personal one.
Royal Caribbean guests who have visited Labadee in recent days seemed to have nothing negative to say about the private resort destination. Tampa resident Alexandra Graham, 45, told CNN that Labadee was, “very well run and had lots of things to do.” She said that they didn’t even learn about the jailbreak, which occurred the same day, until returning to the ship in the evening. She said, “Frankly, we felt very safe.”
Another recent cruiser from Tampa, Erica McNamara, 32, called the day in Labadee her “favorite stop of the entire trip.” She was sailing aboard Odyssey of the Seas on a six-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale, an itinerary that also included Perfect Day at Coco Cay (Royal Caribbean’s private resort in the Bahamas) and the Dominican Republic. “My cousins went snorkeling, my parents did a catamaran trip and my three-and-a-half-year-old thought the tram was the coolest thing ever,” said McNamara.

Envision your next weekend Caribbean vacation, plan a short cruise or quick getaway to the best travel destinations to visit. Adventure awaits!

If you happen to visit on the second Friday of the month, go find the Government House and witness the Changing of the Guard, a British custom that's been performed since 1958.
The Bahamian dollar is kept at the same value as the U.S. dollar, making it easy to pay, as both are used interchangeably.
LOCAL CUISINE ISLAND TWIST AND TANG
There's a lot of similarity between the soul food of the southern U.S., and Bahamian cuisine, that blends the Caribbean tang with its very own spice, creating a trademark flavor unique to the region.
FRUITS OF THE SEA
Little-known as a culinary ingredient in the continental U.S., conch is a large mollusk (akin to clams) with a meaty texture. Locals use it to prepare conch salad, conch fritters, conch chowder and more.
PEAS N' RICE
Pigeon peas are mixed with onions, tomatoes and spices, and incorporated into cooking rice. Often simply called Peas n' Rice, but there's a lot of savory flavors thrown in, like tomato paste, fresh thyme and salted pork or bacon.
CITRUS DELIGHT
Switcha, which many locals consider the official Bahamian drink, blends lemons and limes to concoct a powerful accompaniment to dessert or a refreshing beverage on a hot sunny day.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.
It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.
Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?
Getty Images
A passport isn't always required for cruising.
To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).
Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).
Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.
Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.
All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.
Where to cruise without a passport
There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:
- The Bahamas
When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.
Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.
To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.
Tips on Trips and Expert Picks
Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.
When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises
Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.
If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID
All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.
U.S. citizens 16 and older
If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:
- Passport card
- State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
- Government-issued birth certificate
- Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
- American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card
The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.
Read: TSA Precheck vs. Global Entry
U.S. citizens younger than 16
U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:
- Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
- Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
Read: How to Get a Passport for Kids
Non-U.S. citizens
If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.
Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.
Unacceptable forms of ID
While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.
Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:
- Voter registration cards
- Social Security cards
- Baptismal papers
- Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)
It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.
To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.
