What we saw and heard the day New Jersey left Camden behind

CAMDEN — Just after noon on Thursday, surrounded by wind-whipped spectators and clear blue skies, the Battleship New Jersey, a focal point of the local waterfront since 2001, made its highly anticipated departure from Camden with a celebratory send-off.

Hours later, the floating museum "made great time," finishing the first leg of its journey at the Paulsboro Marine Terminal just after 3:15 p.m., said Marshall Spevak, CEO of the museum and memorial, shaving time off of its original anticipated arrival between 4 and 6 p.m.

The New Jersey's voyage began as four tugboats pulled the massive vessel into the Delaware River to the sounds of a large crowd's cheers and the waving of many an American flag.

Spectators jammed against the cool, metal railings at the front of the ship's pier, trying to get the best view and photos as the 887-foot vessel was rotated to head downstream. People stood on benches to get a higher angle, and parents held their children, bundled in layers against the cold.

"Bye bye New Jersey Battleship," said Holden Weikel, clutching his miniature figurine of the ship while his father, Derek Weikel, lifted him up for a better view.

Strong winds and music from the Camden Creative Arts High School Band drowned out any creaking of the ship during her departure, but the crowd's eager excitement, coming in ebbs and flows of cheers and silence, was palpable in the frigid air.

On the other side of the railing, passengers watched from the river aboard two cruise ships — the Rendezvous and Spirit of Philadelphia — that trailed the "Big J's" security perimeter.

Just a short time earlier, one of the battleship's saluting guns fired rounds that awed the crowd of some 2,000 people, and two New Jersey State Police helicopters conducted a flyover on the waterfront, forcing viewers to turn their gaze upward toward the top of the towering ship. The smell of gunpowder filled the air, and the eager audience of battleship trustees, military and navy veterans, and naval history fanatics filled the pier with eager chatter.

Away from the packed pier and Camden waterfront walkway, onlookers turned out to various viewing spots along the battleship's trek to Paulsboro, taking off from school and work.

People poured out along her route, gathering at Gloucester City's Freedom Pier, Red Bank Battlefield in National Park and Eagle Point in West Deptford.

Bringing back the 'Navy days'

Earlier in the morning, the museum's gift shop quickly drew a crowd, with veterans and others huddling to escape the nipping cold.

The temperature was just above the freezing point, and a chilling wind blew along the waterfront. But the crowd's energy was warm with excitement and a camaraderie unique to the countless veterans that were in attendance.

John Quinesso, a 98-year-old Navy veteran of World War II, described the day's events and the turnout as "wonderful."

The Vineland man didn't serve on the battleship but became a tour guide in 2001 to "get back on the water."

Seeing fellow vets and volunteers on Thursday "brings back the Navy days," he said.

Norman Bloomfield, a 90-year-old Navy veteran, carried decades-old photographs depicting his history with the "Black Dragon," another nickname for the battleship.

Bloomfield came to Camden in the early 2000s to work on the ship's restoration. Being back on the pier, he said, "brought back memories," as he removed his yellow gloves to shuffle through the pictures, blue ink detailing the date and location on the back of each.

The battleship's 'Bon Voyage'

As the gates opened at 10 a.m., volunteers distributed American flags and programs to people already carrying blankets, cameras and Navy memorabilia.

And when bugler Nan LaCorte played the National Anthem, the only other sounds to be heard were the winds whipping the battleship's flags and the whirring blades of distant helicopters.

Spevak described the historic ship as a “tapestry of 45,000 sailors and Marines" during his opening remarks.

He also drew laughter by describing the ship as "another in a long line of truly great Jersey girls” who doesn't pump her own gas.

Over 400 people, bundled in layers and military paraphernalia, were gathered on the pier, but many more had amassed back along the waterfront walkway.

Other guests of note, like New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen, U.S. Rep Donald Norcross and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin all delivered speeches, which they'd joked about shortening due to the uncomfortable weather.

Sparking laughter from attentive audience members with each address as the minutes to departure ticked down, each person at the podium crafted a love letter to the ship, to Camden and to the nation's servicemen and women, past and present.

Fireplaces and stoves became an integral part of St. Petersburg houses due to the cold and damp climate. Regardless of the place, be it a front door or a palace, the decoration of almost every one of them is an artistic work. House of the insurance company "Russia"

The building was erected in 1905–1907 by the architects A. A. Gimpel and V. V. Ilyashev. The first floor was taken as a retail space, in particular, before the revolution there was a music store “Ya. Becker. Pianos and grand pianos. ” On the second and third floors are located the offices of the insurance company, and above - residential apartments. A spectacular and textured look to the building was given by a combination of black, red and light grayish-pink stone. Experts note the unusual lining of the first floor, for which they used blocks of red gangut granite.

A large number of ceramic stoves made in factories in Russia, Germany and Finland, and multi-colored floors with various patterns have been preserved in the interiors of the house. According to the legend, the decorations in the parade based on different seasons were created with the personal participation of Nikolai Roerich himself - a Russian artist and mystic philosopher.

After the 1917 revolution, various state institutions, such as the LandRevebumtrest and Snabcontora, were placed in the building. At the moment there is a museum and exhibition center "Rosfoto".

Since 1920, the palace became known as the House of Scientists. Here it was possible to preserve in its original form all the interiors of the palace, the pomp of the decorations of the ceremonial halls, the majesty of the grand prince's cabinets.

One of the highlights of the place is the Moorish boudoir, where there is an exquisite fireplace with oriental ornaments and decorations. It is made of Italian marble designed by M. Mesmacher in the workshop of E. Ruggia and S. Maderni.

By the way, another fireplace can be found in the Oak Hall, whose interior has remained virtually unchanged. The walls of the dining room are covered with stucco, skillfully imitating oak carving, thanks to which the appearance of the hall reminds of the traditional national art of patterned decoration of village huts. A bright fireplace immediately attracts attention with its patterns and unusual decoration.

Menshikov Palace

At the Menshikov Palace, which is everywhere decorated with Delft ceramics, you should pay special attention.

One of the stoves is in the bedroom of Varvara Mikhailovna Arsenieva, Alexander Menshikov's sister-in-law. The tiled stove has a tiered form, like most of the palace furnaces of the time. But the uniqueness is that each individual tile represents a whole picture, and the tiles are combined into a single composition with frames and rosettes formed by their corners.

St. Petersburg City Palace of Youth

In Anichkov Palace, in the former boudoir of Empress Maria Feodorovna, a painted tiled stove was preserved.

The lining of the furnace is reproduced according to the sketch of M. Mesmacher by his students. Based on the idea of ​​the author, the chimney is decorated with a large panel of tiles, and antique motifs dominate in the painting.

Kelch Mansion (House Lawyer)

Here, the Renaissance, the Gothic and the Rococo have merged together, and the interior decoration is striking at first sight: Italian marble, refined stucco, carved wood, unique sculptures, bronze candelabra, unusual stained glass windows - and all this in Kelch mansion.

There is also a chic fireplace here: it is located in the White Hall, made of light gray Italian marble, created by Maria Lvovna Dillon - the first woman in Russia to graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of sculpture. The incomparable bas-relief of the fireplace “Awakening of Spring” emphasizes the sophistication of the whole composition.

The main pride of the House and the most famous majolica fireplace by the artist MA Vrubel - “Volga and Mikula Selyaninovich” - is located here.

The very first version of the fireplace in this story was made in the Abramtsevo workshop for the Paris exhibition in 1900 by M. A. Vrubel and P. K. Vaulin. Kamin received a gold medal at the exhibition. The very first copy, apparently, was sold, its traces are lost. And Muscovites from various museums and employees of the Museum-Reserve Abramtsevo , where there are collapsible panels on this subject, often come to the fireplace in the library. There is a panel in the Russian Museum. But the color scheme, with a general plot, is completely different. The fireplace in the house Bazhanov details in the plot most. You can distinguish numerous variations on the faces of the Sirin birds. They are all different. This is most likely one of the most recent works by Vaulin and it was not made in Abramtsevo, but here near Petersburg in his workshop around 1909.

House of bourgeois society

In addition to palaces, you can find old fireplaces and stoves in exquisite ceramic finishes and in ordinary St. Petersburg ceremonies.

One of the finest copies of the stoves is located in the House of the bourgeois society, built on the Fontanka embankment in 1910 according to the design of the architect N.K. Pryanishnikov.

The front door is decorated with a tiled stove, the decoration is made of dark blue glazed ceramic tiles, and the facade is decorated with a decor in the form of embossed floral ornament.

New St. Petersburg mayor, City Council members sworn in on historic day

ST. PETERSBURG — Ken Welch, a St. Petersburg native who grew up in one of its redlined neighborhoods and attended one of its segregated elementary schools, was sworn in Thursday as its first Black mayor.

While COVID-19 precautions and the mayor’s own positive test derailed some of the pageantry, community leaders cheered during the virtual ceremony shown at the city’s Woodson African American Museum of Florida and students in at least 22 Pinellas County schools tuned in to witness what was once unimaginable.

They saw Welch, who was experiencing mild cold-like symptoms from the coronavirus, sworn in at his Lakewood Estates home by Sixth Judicial Circuit Judge Michael J. Andrews. They watched him put his left hand on a Bible carried by his 19-year-old daughter, Kenya. They listened as he recited the oath of office.

While the swearing-in was prerecorded, the mayor was able to give a live address that was streamed online and shown on city television shortly after noon.

“Yes, this election is historic,” he said. “But our goal is not to simply make history — rather we must work together to make a difference, to make an impact for this generation, and for generations to come. Our collective vision will define what progress looks like for our entire city.”

Welch, 57, pledged to embrace the people’s desire for a community where every person is valued. He vowed to get to work on affordable housing, improve city operations and follow through on broken promises made to the diaspora of the city’s Gas Plant neighborhood, once a home to the Welches and a center of the Black community.

“When we listen to each other, and work to truly understand our viewpoints, we grow stronger collectively,” Welch said.

Welch enters City Hall with the most diverse City Council on record — four members of color, including its first Hispanic member and a Black member elected from north of Central Avenue. Three newly elected and two re-elected members were sworn in Thursday morning on the steps of City Hall.

City Council member Deborah Figgs-Sanders made it from City Hall to the Woodson Museum just in time to see the National Anthem played by 20-year-old local saxophonist Jordan Bolds.

“What today meant was the hope for an opportunity of new beginnings,” Figgs-Sanders said. “I was proud. There was no way I was going to miss that.”

A wonderful world

Terri Lipsey Scott was at the edge of her seat.

At the end of Welch’s swearing-in, she was the first to give a standing ovation in the small crowd invited to the museum.

“It was that waiting to exhale moment,” Lipsey Scott said. “It became real at that moment.”

Lipsey Scott, the museum’s executive director, couldn’t bear to let the fanfare for the city’s first Black mayor fall to the wayside. She hosted the exclusive watch party — with balloons, appetizers, Prosecco and large-print photos of Welch — and gathered his most ardent supporters. The African American museum, after all, is where Welch celebrated his victory.

Among those in attendance were several county leaders: City Council members Richie Floyd, Lisa Wheeler-Bowman and Figgs-Sanders; Pinellas County Commissioner Rene Flowers, Pinellas School Board members Caprice Edmond and Laura Hine, state Rep. Michele Rayner, D-St. Petersburg, and St. Petersburg NAACP president Esther Eugene.

After the ceremony was over, Lipsey Scott lined up Bolds, the saxophonist; 18-year-old Jaiden Jones, who sang What a Wonderful World; and 20-year-old violist Carlos Walker.

“What a wonderful world it is,” she said.

Flowers stood up next and summarized what she described as “the long hard road to get here:” Decades of institutional racism in St. Petersburg. Sanitation workers striking 55 years ago to be treated equally as city employees. African Americans earning the right to vote in 1965.

And exactly one year ago today, she said, “individuals tried to take over the capital of the United States of America to take away that right to vote.”

“I am sharing all of that with you because I want you to truly embrace and understand the moment of the day,” Flowers said. Recalling a text she wrote to Welch on Saturday, she said, “January 6 last year was a day of heartache and pain but the one who we serve has allowed us to reclaim that pain.”

A fantastic day

Earlier downtown, outgoing council chairperson Ed Montanari opened the swearing-in of new and re-elected City Council members by saying hello to one guest who couldn’t make it: Welch. He also welcomed the city’s new deputy mayor, Stephanie Owens.

Sixth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Pam Campbell led council members through their oaths of office.

New District 8 City Council member Richie Floyd stepped forward to cheers and applause. He was accompanied by his wife, Miranda, and his parents, Jerome and Tobie Floyd.

They carried a blue box holding a Bible that had been in the family since 1873. Floyd said it was likely one of the first possessions bought upon being freed from slavery.

“I am more than proud of him,” said Jerome Floyd, who traveled from Fort Walton Beach. “He will do great things.”

The family of Copley Gerdes, who was elected to serve District 1, is no stranger to politics. His uncle Rob Gerdes works in City Hall, and his father, Charlie Gerdes, is a former City Council member. The whole family got up on stage for a group photo.

“I’m very blessed to have a big village,” Gerdes said.

Despite having a broken fibula, District 4 member Lisset Hanewicz, the first Hispanic person elected to the City Council, made it to the stage with her husband and 7-year-old daughter. She took her oath on the Spanish Bible owned by her mother, who died in September.

Gina Driscoll and Brandi Gabbard were reelected and confirmed as the council’s 2022 chair and vice chair, respectively.

Time to get to work

Welch handily won the Nov. 2 election with 60 percent of the vote. He had bipartisan endorsements and ran on a platform of progress and inclusivity. The five-time Pinellas County commissioner and son of the first Black man on the City Council had been waiting for this moment for a long time.

In his address, he announced that he is creating a “high-level position” called the assistant administrator for strategic initiatives to focus on the preservation and development of affordable and workforce housing. Filling that role is the city’s current neighborhood affairs administrator Rob Gerdes, uncle of the new council member.

Gerdes will join high-ranking officials like Owens, now the city’s deputy mayor and chief of policy; Tom Greene, the interim city administrator who worked in Rick Kriseman’s administration; director of communications Janelle Irwin Taylor; and senior adviser Doyle Walsh.

Welch said he would implement a diversity, equity and inclusion program. He thanked the business and arts communities and said he would listen to the recommendations of the city’s 3,200 employees for improving operations, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Welch thanked Kriseman, his predecessor, for his leadership, especially during the pandemic, as well as new City Council chairperson Driscoll. He said has called a joint meeting between the County Commission, the City Council and his office to discuss the Tampa Bay Rays among other topics.

”As my father would say — it’s time to get to work.”
