David on acoustic guitar all night with Chris Miller on electric guitar, slide, mandolin, acoustic, etc. They were joined, often, by Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West, who opened for the show, and were wonderful. This concert is a complete menu of songs from King of California, complete with unreleased tracks. Encore was Abeilene and Dry River. This is not a rockin' get up and dance performance (more country than rock as the CD of 25 years ago was), but one full of reminiscing, which Dave does in a number of stories introducing the songs. Supposedly he is writing a book!

Unable to go to Concert at all. Main reason being I was not notified by Spotify when to purchase tickets , apparently in March. I tried in vain to get matter clarified with Kat Wright's people & they did work on it for me, but I wasn't able to attend due to short notice. It agonizes me. Something screwed up somewhere in the "failure to communicate" realm as witnessed in Paul Newman's film "Cool Hand Luke"-Arrrrgggg.

Once again Kat Wright's people are not to blame here, but rather the I fault Spotifyscrewed up in my opinion.

Great show. Dave had amp problems. They had to chat for awhile. Live music at its best.

Love Smilin Productions aka Scott Holbrook for pulling together such great artists.

And a big thanks to the Oddfellow folks for graciously letting us enjoy such a cool venue.

Great show at the Kessler in Dallas. Every time I see Alvin, I feel like I’ve forgotten how good he is and love the rediscovery. Even the songs I’ve heard before feel exciting, as if it’s a new discovery. A great talent that I never miss if he comes close.

Dave Alvin Reinvents Himself on Tour with Jimmie Dale Gilmore

Don Wilcock

On casual reflection, the average roots music fan would not think of Dave Alvin as an intellectual. Dave began his career with brother Phil as co-founders of blues-rocking band The Blasters in 1979. “There’s still people who define me as being the snot-nosed loud mouth goofball that was the guitar player in the Blasters,” he says today.

Dave is currently on tour with Jimmie Dale Gilmore of Flatlanders fame. They will release their second album together in October, but currently have a single out called “Borderland.”

“ We’re still making the album,” says Dave. “The album is almost done. We’re going back in October to finish it. But (the label) wanted to put something out, and that was the song they considered the most commercial, the Americana feel.”

Commercial is not a label Dave or I would immediately use to describe his music. Organic is his descriptor. We got into that when I asked him what kind of rules he has about not having rules?

“It may sound corny,” he shot back.

Go ahead, I said. You have my permission.

“Let me use a terrible word, but it’s applicable; the best word I can come up with is it’s organic.”

He’s right, I told him. That’s a groaner.

“It’s a groaner, but it’s organic.”

I asked him to define organic.

“That it comes from our roots. That it’s not diluted. I’ll define it this way. I never made a disco record.”

Thank you, Jesus!

“Yeah. I’ve done a lot of things in my career that have made people cock their heads like puppies. ‘What’s he doing?’  But what it really boils down to is all I’m doing on guitar is playing Lightnin’ Hopkins. It’s just different situations, and that’s been a constant. So, my attitude has always been to take what limited skills I have and see where I can go with it because I’m not Django Reinhardt. I’m not Lonnie Johnson as a guitar player. I’m me, and look, how far can we take this, and how many different situations can we put this into?”

Dave has recorded with such diverse artists as Bobby Rush, Tom Waits, John Mellencamp, Little Milton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and The Knitters. His songs have been recorded by Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry, Buckwheat Zydeco, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and Marshall Crenshaw.

Does he think his greatest talent is as a lyricist?

“Yeah, there’s a zillion guitar players in the world. Songwriters are a little rarer. Not as rare as they used to be, but they are a little rarer. Guitar players? yeah. I’m a good guitar player. I’m ok. That’s all you need to be.”

I’m going to see him and Jimmie.

“Well, bring earplugs.” (Laugh)

Are they that loud?

“It isn’t quite that loud, but I get my point across.”

Well, I’ve already lost my hearing, I tell him, but it doesn’t matter. He laughs. At 79, I have tinnitus. I jokingly tell him I can’t tell the difference between what they’re playing and what I’m hearing inside my head.

But I digress. About Dave’s being an intellectual.

In 2000, Dave won a Grammy for Public Domain: Songs From the Wild Land , a collection of traditional folk and blues classics. He’s written several books of poetry, and The Los Angeles Times wrote him up for a reunion he had with Gerald Locklin, his Cal State Long Beach professor.

“Gerald Locklin was the first teacher kind of person who thought I might have some sort of brain. Not a lot, but some sort of brain. At one point he was the most published poet in the United States because he was the king of the small presses. That’s when there used to be a ton of small press magazines. He was an amazing teacher, a great poet and a good friend, and he sort of opened my eyes to what poetry is capable of doing, non-traditional poetry. Let’s put it that way.”

John Pennerstaff in the article said that Dave Alvin learned to write poetic songs not from listening to blues heroes like Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Marty Robbins but from Locklin, and specifically “Dry River.”

I fell in love with a woman, but she did not love me Well, I fell in love with you baby, but you did not love me Now I’m as dry as that old river, and I’m as dead as those old trees Someday it’s gonna rain, someday it’s gonna pour Someday this old heart of mine’s gonna fall in love once more Someday it’s gonna rain, someday it’s gonna pour Someday this old dry river, it won’t be dry anymore

“It’s funny. Locklin besides being a poetry teacher also taught history of English literature. We got drunk one night ’cause there was a bar on campus. We had become close friends, and he had me teach the class because he was too drunk to teach it. (Chuckle)

“So, you can imagine what kind of guy he was. I taught the class on the English pamphleteers Addison and Steele from the early 18 th century. He looked at me and said, ‘I don’t think I can do this tonight,’ and he hands me his book, and it was all this information right there. ‘Ok, tonight we’re doing Addison and Steel.’ I was pretty sauced myself.

“Jerry was a great guy, a great teacher. Taking the imagery of offbeat poetry that I was attracted to whether it was by Tchaikovsky or Gerald Locklin, or even prose writers like Ramond Chandler and people like that, and if I can put that in song, that’s great. So, that’s what I’ve tried to do my whole career. That’s why I’m stubborn.

“They probably have courses now in schools for songwriting, but you really learn on your own, and everybody does it different, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, what I learned growing up listening to old blues records was the same lesson that my brother Phil and I learned hanging around Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker as kids which is you gotta write your own blues.

dave alvin tour

“The thing as a songwriter I learned from him – there was a thing my brother Phil could imitate Big Joe Turner early on and he still can, or he could until his recent health issues, but he sang first like Big Joe, and when my brother was 15 or 16 years old, Big Joe took him aside and told him ‘Look, do me a favor quit embarrassing yourself, quit embarrassing me and find your own way to sing,’ and that lesson sunk in to both my brother and me.

“(A song) could be a poem disguised as a song, complete with a drum solo, but not. I learned songwriting because all songwriters are self-taught whether you’re Robert Johnson or Hank Williams or Lennon and McCartney. It doesn’t matter if you’re self-taught.

“They probably have courses now in schools for songwriting, but you really learn on your own, and everybody does it differently, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, what I learned growing up listening to old blues records was the same lesson that my brother Phil and I learned hanging around Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker as kids, which is you gotta write your own blues.”

Dave has chemistry with Jimmie Dale Gilmore like he does with Locklin. “Jimmy’s had an interesting life, and he’s done a lot of things besides music, you know, that are odd and interesting and intriguing, but then, later in life in his 40s, he got some major label push where they just put a lot of promotion, this, that and the other into him and his music and his career.”

The Flatlanders came out in the ’70s, and it was 20 years before anybody figured out how good it was.

“Yeah, but he got a major label push in the ’90s to make him into a star, make him not the Flatlanders, him through Elektra Records, and that kind of stuff can mess with your brain. And I’ve had a lot of friends that have gone down that route that no longer play music, because it messed with their brain.

“There are demands placed on you that you feel, both financial and ‘gee, is this record gonna make up for the fact that they spent half a million dollars to promote it?’ So, Jimmy kinda went through that. He got through it, and in his brain he retired from music.

“He didn’t officially retire, but he wasn’t gonna be some gigantic star. He wasn’t gonna be a big country star or whatever star. And yeah, his attitude now is, I don’t give a fuck. I’ll do whatever I want, you know? And that always has been my attitude. So, our first album we did together has everything from a Youngbloods song ‘Let’s Get Together’ to a Lightnin’ Hopkins number to a Memphis Jug Band number. It just doesn’t matter. It’s like whatever we feel like doing, we’re gonna do it.”

Dave Alvin’s Third Mind Kick Off First Ever Tour in Portland, OR with Mind-expanding Psych Jams (SHOW REVIEW/PHOTOS)

  • By Neil Ferguson

Did legendary guitarist Dave Alvin sit down one day and think, what would it be like to start a band in the vein of the 60s-era Grateful Dead and other jam-loving cohorts? Because this is essentially the premise of his current project, an all-star collective of sorts that finds Alvin teaming up with a handful of mega-talented musician friends to craft the kind of kaleidoscopic rock that lends itself to improvisation. The Third Mind’s mix of original tunes alongside covers of old folk, blues and psychedelic rock songs has now transpired over two acclaimed albums. Yet somehow, since first getting together in 2019 (or maybe even earlier), they have only played a single show, an odd feat since their style of music practically begs to be experienced live. Lucky for us, the band is finally embarking on their first tour and on Thursday, January 11th they officially kicked it off in Portland, Oregon at Mississippi Studios.

Before The Third Mind took the stage, LA paisley pop outfit Rain Parade played an opening set that veered from the jangly guitars of “What She’s Done to Your Mind,” the early Pink Floyd mixed with dream pop of “Forgetfullness,” and a slow duet with folk harmonies and little touches of harmonica that veered right into the droning shoegaze rock of “No Easy Way Down” before climaxing with a blistering guitar solo. Their set was undoubedtly nostalgic for good chunk of the crowd, and their ability to transport the audience back in time served as a proper introduction before The Third Mind would go even deeper.

With Dave Alvin looking dapper as always in his California cowboy getup, the band wasted little time in launching their set with a version of “Morning Dew” that would have made Jerry Garcia smile. Jesse Sykes set the mood with her hauntingly lonesome vocals while Alvin’s twang-laced guitar work set the stage for Mark Karan – subbing for David Immergluck – to enter the scene with some serious firepower, all rolling along to Michael Jerome’s rumbling thunder rhythm. Considering Karan’s credentials in the Grateful Dead world, his Garcia-esque stylings would come in handy throughout the night as a feisty counterpart to Alvin’s airier picking. He complemented Alvin’s guitar bliss on the Mike Bloomfield psych-blues tune “Groovin’ Is Easy,” while both kept it swampy and loose with plenty of guitar jousting on Paul Butterfield’s “In My Own Dream.”

dave alvin tour

While Sykes was a steady and calming presence throughout the night, she truly stepped into the spotlight with her original song “Tall Grass,” a crafty work of cosmic folk that ascended into guitar-soaked fury as Karan and Alvin gleefully traded licks. Victor Krummenacher’s bass grooves would also prove to be a steady force, propelling the jams further and allowing the guitarists to stretch out. The band’s take on the classic R&B tune “Sally Go ’round the Roses” saw the guitar opening up with sinister delight as Alvin injected frenzied bursts into the groove and Karan teased a flamenco-esque solo. In the home stretch of a nearly 90-minute set, the band guided the audience back down to earth with a twinkly, sun-washed take on Fred Neil’s gorgeous folk-soul tune “Little Bit of Rain” that bloomed into a wall of deliciously funky sound as the expansive “East West.”

The Third Mind might scoff at calling themselves a jam band, but their mind-expanding set in Portland made it clear that they may just be the coolest jam band out there right now whether they like it or not. Alvin joked to the crowd about not rehearsing, and if this was true then you wouldn’t have noticed by their natural tightness. There was only one slip-up when, after encoring with another Fred Neil cover in “Dolphins” that featured Sykes and Alvin dueting, they decided to give the crowd even more with a rip-roaring blues cover of “Highway 61 Revisited” that saw Alvin whispering the lyrics to Sykes. Then again, it was this moment of spontaneity that captured the special chemistry that exists between these musicians and exactly what makes them such an exciting live act.

Thanks for the photos and review. It certainly was an great set by the Third Mind. The blistering finish of Highway 61 was a highlight.

Perfect set list of songs that gave the band plenty of leeway while allowing them individually to shine. Found myself rocking with the drummer and mesmerized by his skills… just wow. I needed this show and it delivered.

Dave Alvin on making music, living with cancer and performing in churches

Dave Alvin Performs at Pappy & Harriet's, July 1, 2022, Pioneertown, California.

The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and co-founder of the band The Blasters headlines the Adams Avenue Unplugged on April 29. It’s possible his San Diego music pals may join him

Dave Alvin isn’t making any promises, but it’s possible his headlining April 29 performance at the 2023 Adams Avenue Unplugged festival might include cameos by some of his longtime San Diego musical pals.

“I’m thinking about Cindy Lee (Berryhill), Dead Rock West and Joey (Harris) and Jerry (Raney) from the Beat Farmers. I can’t guarantee it, but there might be some good musical ‘goofing off’ on stage,” said two-time Grammy Award-winner Alvin, speaking from his Los Angeles home.

Not coincidentally, Harris, Raney and Dead Rock West are also part of the lineup for this year’s edition of the annual music marathon, which will feature more than 60 artists — mostly of the troubadour variety — performing in 20 venues along Adams Avenue in Kensington, Normal Heights and University Heights.

Produced by the Adams Avenue Business Association, the homegrown Unplugged event debuted in 2012. It replaced the then-18-year-old Adams Avenue Roots Festival, which had been launched by Lou Curtiss as a sequel to his storied San Diego Folk Festival.

Adams Ave. Unplugged replacing Roots Fest

Free two-day music marathon in April will cover 24 venues and two miles on Adams Avenue

Feb. 22, 2012

All but one of Saturday’s performances are free. The sole exception is Alvin’s ticketed headlining set in the Normal Heights United Church, adjacent to the Adams Avenue Recreation Center.

The church is the former home of the Acoustic Music San Diego concert series and a familiar venue for Alvin, who cofounded the roots-rocking band The Blasters in 1979. After kicking off his solo career in 1986, he won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album and the 2015 Grammy for Best Blues Album.

“I played a number of concerts in that church and it has very good acoustics like a lot of older churches,” Alvin said. “And I always liked (now-retired Acoustic Music San Diego mastermind) Carey Driscoll.”

Last year saw the release of Alvin’s book, “New Highway: Selected Lyrics, Poems, Prose, Essays, Eulogies and Blues,” and of an expanded version of his 2011 album, “Eleven Eleven.” A memoir and a new solo album are now in the works, along with the November release of Alvin’s second album with the improvisation-fueled rock band The Third Mind.

Does music mean something different to him now than in 1979 when Alvin and his older brother, Phil, cofounded The Blasters in Downey?

“That’s a good question,” Dave Alvin replied. “Yes, and no.”

He paused for emphasis.

“With The Blasters,” Alvin said, “the thing I got excited about was playing live. Some musicians get addicted to being in the studio, or to writing songs, and nothing else. Me, I’m addicted to playing live.

“Whether The Blasters were playing in a club to 20 people who didn’t know who we were, or in front of 17,000 angry Queen fans when we were opening for Queen, I loved being there and still do. It’s like a runner’s high, or a meditative state, and old songs sound new and new songs sound old.”

Alvin chuckled.

“Other things have certainly changed,” he noted. “In our early days, it was: ‘Can we get more beer?’ Now, I don’t drink. But the onstage high I get hasn’t changed at all.”

Dave Alvin on living with cancer

Dave Alvin doesn’t want to waste even a minute when it comes to writing his memoir, releasing his next solo album or completing anything else he has planned.

In May 2020, barely two months after the pandemic shutdown began, the two-time Grammy Award-winner was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His doctors subsequently discovered Alvin had stage-four colorectal cancer and that it had spread to his liver.

He underwent extensive surgery in 2021. The heavy regimen of chemotherapy and radiation treatment Alvin underwent made his hands swell and caused such severe neuropathy he was unable to play or even pick up a guitar for nearly six months.

In June 2021, less than three weeks after being declared he was “cancer-free,” Alvin learned he had cancer in his lungs and likely had less than a year to live.

“I’ve had three surgeries,” said the 67-year-old musician. “Right now, technically, I’m in remission. I did a CAT Scan last week to see if the cancer has returned. I’ll probably get those results right before I do my (April 29) San Diego show.”

Alvin has spent more than 40 years of his life as a touring and recording musician. His cancer has been life-changing for him in more way than one.

“I’ll sound like a cheerleader or a self-help guru,” he said. “But what it really boils down to is that — if you can get through it — everything else is frosting, I should have been dead from the stage-four cancer, and I’m not. So, even the crappy days I have now are not crappy.

“Yesterday, I was out hiking in the hills. Two years ago, I couldn’t do that and a year ago it was questionable. Now, I’m out touring, playing gigs, recording. And every time I’m doing these things, I think: ‘Am I really doing this?’

“But that applies to everything, including eating a meal or starting the car. ‘Hey, the car’s starting!’ Every little moment now is a triumph.”

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

dave alvin tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

This is grassroots travel at its most interesting

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
