McLeod Ganj , also referred to as Upper Dharamsala, is situated ten kilometers uphill from the main Dharamsala city. It hosts nearly 10,000 people, including Indians, exile Tibetans and foreign travelers. Many tourists from all over the world come to McLeod Ganj to learn more about Buddhism and experience a peaceful atmosphere. This town is called ‘Little Lhasa’ because of the large population of Tibetans. McLeod Ganj serves as the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama , and is a great place to understand Tibetan culture and history.

Dalai Lama Temple Complex

This place provides an important insight into Tibetan culture and spirituality. At the complex’s entrance, visitors are requested to leave their cameras in the lockers. Inside the complex, there is a Tibet Museum , where you will get to know the history of Tibet, its people and their struggles for independence. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closer to the temple, everyone has to pass through the security check. Despite a queue for security reasons, the view from the Temple yard will astonish you.

Bhagsu Falls

This waterfall, which is 20 meters high, is situated in the village of Bhagsunag, just two kilometers away from McLeod Ganj. This village is mainly famous for waterfalls and an ancient Lord Shiva temple. There is a narrow trek to the waterfall, complete with beautiful natural views on the side. If you reach close to the top, you will enjoy a fabulous view of the hills. Due to the high popularity of the place, you will meet hundreds of tourists on the way as well.

Dal Lake is a pond located on the McLeod Ganj Naddi Road at 1,775 meters above sea level. The lake is surrounded by a pine forest with a scenic view of the hills. Near the banks of the lake, there is a Kali temple that adds a further peaceful aspect to the atmosphere. Overall Dal Lake is a relaxing eco space where you can enjoy nature, feed bread to the fish in the pond, and explore a different view of the hills.

Kangra Valley

If you ever wondered whether lush green desktop wallpapers with mountains are real, make a visit to Kangra Valley and feel the serene views of nature. This is a great destination for walks, bird watching, trekking, mountaineering and rock climbing. It also hosts a rock temple complex known as Himalayan Pyramid. Kangra Valley offers unique sights throughout the year, though the main season occurs from March to July. The snowy Dhauladhar ranges of Himachal add an untouched natural feeling to the place.

Dive Into The History In Kangra Fort

Located on the top of a hill, this fort served as a residence to one of the oldest dynasties in the world – the Katoch dynasty. The fort includes a courtyard, several halls, towers, and temples dating back to the 9th century AD. You can listen to an audio guide to gain a deeper insight of the place. There is also a museum where you can learn more about the history. Once you reach the top of the fort, you will discover a beautiful view overlooking the river.

Trek To Triund Hill

Go trekking or hiking to Triund Hill to feel the crisp mountain air. The trail is around seven kilometers both ways. It takes six hours walking: four hours for climbing and two hours to come back. On the way, you will pass several small villages, cozy cafés, and enjoy breathtaking views from the top. You can spend a night in Triund and trek further to the snow line and caves the next day. The trek is easy enough even for the beginners.

Shop At McLeod Ganj Market

Local markets give a real feel of Indian culture. McLeod Ganj Market is a global gathering of hippies, travelers, monks, and artists on one street where you can find almost anything from warm clothes to souvenirs. There is also a variety of handmade musical instruments. Indian shopkeepers are known for great storytelling skills; thus, you will get a chance to learn how different things were made and where they come from. Meet creative people. Very often there are artists and craftsmen at the market who are selling the things they’ve created.

Dharamshala is located in the upper reaches of the Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh and is placed at an average altitude of 1,475 meters above sea level. The city is surrounded a thick cover of deodar cedar trees and is one of the major strong holds for the Tibetan refugees and the seat of the 14th dalai lama of the Tibetan sect of Buddhism. Situated on the outskirts of Kangra, about 20 kilometers away from Dharamsala, is one of India's oldest forts. The Kangra Fort sits atop a steep rock, and its towering presence dominates the surrounding valley. The fort covers an area of about 4 kilometers, and it is guarded by ramparts and high walls.Built strategically at the confluence or meeting point of Majhi and Banganga river, Kangra Fort is one of the must-see spots in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.Besides its unique architecture and historical importance, the fort is also known for housing three temples, namely the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Shitlamata Temple, and Ambika Devi Temple. Several doors leads into the fort, but the main entrance goes through a courtyard that is behind two gates.The doors even have interesting names such as Ahani Darwaza, Amiri Darwaza, and Jehangiri Darwaza. Outside of the main temple gate, you will find the Andheri Darwaza. It is the fort's primary defense gate.The walls of the Andheri Darwaza are 15 feet high and the passage is 7 meters long. The gate allows only two men or one horse to pass through at a time. The narrow passage of the defense gate was designed to slow down the opposing force.Once you pass the Ahani and Amiri Darwaza, a long and narrow passageway will take you to the top section of the fort. This hidden treasure is worth seeing during your trip to Dharamshala. Tapovan is located adjacent to the town of Sidhbari and Parliament is located in this town. The road leads down through a serene forest and a beautiful view of the Dhauladhars to the Chinmaya Ashram. 

Another popular attraction is the meditation complex in the Chinmaya Ashram and the huge statue of the Hindu deity called Hanuman. Recently, cyclists found this road to be very good for their hobby. There are also some organized cycling groups traveling down this road leading to the village of Kaned. 

This road is a great experience for the people who wish to trek on this during sunrise and sunset.

This important Hindu temple is dedicated to one of the incarnations of the Hindu Goddess Shakti. The temple is one of the many goddess temples in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Jwala Devi temple is visited by hundreds of devotees of the Hindu faith. The temple is located around 50 kilometers away from Dharamshala. The major attraction for this temple is because of flames that appear to have no source of fuel. This phenomenon has also been the reason for the popularity of this temple. 

This church can be reached by road from Dharamshala to Mcleodganj. The church was constructed in the year 1852 and its architecture is based on Neo-Gothic style. The church has stained glass windows with beautiful artwork. 

Domestic Indian tourists visit this church on their way to the famous town of Mcleodganj. It is a common sight to see tourists engaged in posing for photographs in front of the church gate. This hidden destination is worth your time.

This trekking trail is popular among adventurous travelers who take their trekking game to the next level. The caves are located at the height of around 11,000 feet from sea level. The trek to Lahesh Cave is a very rewarding experience. 

It offers a beautiful view of the forest and the mountains. It is best to avoid the trek during the monsoon seasons since it is very slippery to trek during that time. People trekking to Triund sometimes decide to extend their journey by going through the Indrahar Pass and to Lahesh caves. Although a little challenging for the non-trekkers, this trail is worth trying.

To be specific, it is the Tsuglagkhang Complex in McLeod Ganj where the Dalai Lama resides. Touted to be one of the holiest places of worship, the complex sees visitors from all over the world.

Not only is the complex the Dalai Lama’s residence, but it also has the Tsuglagkhang Temple, Namgyal Monastery, and the Tibet Museum. The St. John in the Wilderness Church is among the state’s most visited and important churches. Constructed in the year 1852, this is one of the famous places to visit near Dharamshala because of its neo-gothic architecture and the majestic Belgian stained glass window, which is very swiftly combined with the breathtaking backdrop that’s full of lush deodar trees. The church was built to honour John the Baptist and is called ‘St. John in the Wilderness Church’ as it is set amidst dense woods. A church of the same name is located in Nainital, Uttarakhand as well. It is said that this church is one of the oldest places in Dharmshala and a prime example of architectural beauty. This church was the final resting place of one of India’s Governor Generals and Viceroy, Lord Ergin.

4. The War Memorial

One of the best places to see in Dharamshala, the War Memorial will give you a sense of pride. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of those brave hearts who laid down their lives for the motherland during the Indo-China war of 1947-48, 1962 & 1965, the 1971 war, and UN Peace operations. The Kangra District has devoted many of its young valorous people into the service of the motherland. The War Memorial is located amidst the forests and the structure is beautifully crafted out of black stone which is divided into three huge panels, each of them being 24 feet high. The names of the fallen soldiers are etched on the black stone panels, so make sure you spare some time to pay homage. This wonderful place to visit in Dharamshala is surrounded by dense green beauty and a college nearby where you can go and enjoy some piping hot tea and snacks.

5. Dal Lake

A popular namesake, the Dal Lake in Dharamshala is another spot you can visit. Although not as famous as the Kashmir one, this Dharamshala Lake is still a place to see while you are in town. Quite the adventurous spot, the Dal Lake in Dharamshala is a medium-altitude lake that offers its visitors a pleasant experience. It also offers a trekking trail with an enchanting backdrop of the hills that is very well complemented by the cosy weather that the town has. The lake is located at a height of 1,775 metres. Surrounded by thick green Deodar trees, the lake also has a Shiv Mandir located on the banks of the lake, making it one of the best places in Dharamshala for a rejuvenating break.

6. Masroor Rock Cut Temple

The Masroor Rock Cut Temple is an archaeological site that has been carved out in the Nagara style from a single monolithic rock and is one of the most attractive tourist places in Dharamshala. With a combination of around 15 rock-cut temples which are built in the Indo-Aryan architectural style, the complex was built in the 8th century facing the North-East direction towards the Dhauladhar range. There are three entrances to the complex. However, it is believed that there was a fourth entrance as well which was left incomplete. Inspired by the Hindu texts, the temple’s complex houses a sacred pool of water and symmetric construction that is laid out in a square. Located 32 km from Kangra on the Nagrota-Surian Link Road, the Masroor Rock Cut Temple is one of the most beautiful places to see in Dharamshala. 7. Bhagsu Falls

2. Tsuglagkhang Complex and Namgyal Monastery

The trek to this pristine high-altitude lake begins from Kareri village located near Dharamshala. The total trek distance to Kareri Lake is around 13 km. Trekkers often camp at Reoti, located 7 kms on the trail. There are a few shops at Reoti that provide basic tents and mattresses for camping.

The famous Masrur temple, also known as the rock-cut temple, is located in Kangra Valley around 40 kms from Dharamshala.  This 8th-century complex of rock-cut Hindu temples faces northeast, towards the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. It is noted for its unique architectural style that resembles the Elephanta Caves near Mumbai, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and the rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu.

Kangra Fort is a well-known tourist attraction located around 20 kilometers from Dharamshala. It was built by the Katoch Rajput Dynasty. The Kangra Fort is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. In the compound, there is Kalachakra, meaning the “Wheel Of Life.” It depicts the various stages of life in the form of various mandalas and statues.

Once inside the temple room, you experience the greatness of the place with fine statues and a magnanimous throne used by the Dalai Lama to deliver sermons. 2. St. John’s In The Wilderness Church

Saint John’s Church was dedicated to a namesake Baptist in 1852. This almost 169-year-old church defies its age and looks as beautiful as ever. It is said that the temple King Bhagsu built the temple to please Nag Devta. Nag Devta (The Snake God) was enraged by the king who had stolen the holy water from Nag Lake. As repentance, he built the Shiva temple. However, some believe it was built by a Gorkha named Bhagsuwala.

5. Kangra Fort

There was a large idol of the goddess in the fort, and every neighboring state used to send gold, silver, and precious jewelry and stones to please her. It is said that the treasure was so immense that it could not be recorded, transported or contained into vessels. Legend has it that the entire treasure was stored in 21 wells within the fort. The lure of the treasure led Alexander the Great, Mahmud Ghazni, Jehangir, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and Britishers to attack the temple. Many believe that 8 secret wells still exist to hide the treasure.

In 1905, a 7.8 Richter earthquake shook Dharamshala, and the fort, which had not yielded to any of the strong rulers, bent its knees to the power of nature. 6. Gyuto Monastery

The place is painted in yellow, and its colorfully dressed monks are friendly. You can wander around aimlessly and explore the riches. The monastery is situated on the top of a hill, and the view from up here is breathtaking, with white Dhauladhar Mountains in the distance and the silver line of the Beas River. 7. Masrur Temple

The main temple houses stone idols of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and Lord Laxman. The temples are believed to have been around since the sixth century AD. There is a central shrine in Masrur, surrounded by 14 other shrines. The major attraction of the complex is Thakurdwara, which has Lord Shiva carved on it. 8. Dal Lake

It is situated 11 km from Dharamshala near the village of Tota Rani at the height of 1775 meters above sea level. The thick deodar forests surround the lake and make it such a soul-satisfying place. This memorial features 24-feet high black stones that bear the name of every martyr who has sacrificed his life in the wars.
