6 Questions About 14-Day Kenya Safaris

Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.

Is 2 weeks a good amount of time for a Kenya trip?
“A 2-week safari in Kenya is a very special holiday. Two weeks gives you enough time to really immerse yourself in a safari and get into the rhythm of the bush. Although 14 days is a great amount of time for a safari, you’ll still have to make choices. There are lots of parks and reserves in Kenya and the key to a successful safari is to resist the temptation to cram too much into the itinerary. Aim to spend at least 2 to 3 nights in each destination. On days you’re not moving lodges, you’ll get to enjoy some rest and quality time in the lodge between game drives.”
Can I combine my safari with a beach holiday or a mountain climb in Kenya?
“While a safari might be your prime reason to visit Kenya, there are other things you can do here. The beautiful coastline is ideal for a beach holiday. Whether you’re looking for a child-friendly resort or an exclusive romantic getaway, Kenya has beach accommodation suitable for every occasion and budget. The reefs create a perfect snorkeling environment and there are great diving opportunities as well. If you’re looking for a more active add-on to your safari, consider climbing one of Africa’s tallest mountains. You need to visit neighboring Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The trek to the summit takes between 5 and 8 days. Alternatively try Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain. Although less popular, the climb is considered more scenic and at least as challenging. ”
What are the options for a 14-day safari in Kenya?
“With so many different parks and reserves, there are many options for a 2-week safari in Kenya. And, with 14 days, you can mix and match to build your dream holiday. The wildebeest migration, one of the world’s great wildlife spectacles, happens in the Masai Mara National Reserve in September to October (depending on rainfall). Wildlife viewing is excellent throughout the year though, and big cats are common. Lake Nakuru National Park is often visited en route. This Rift Valley lake is a hot spot for rhinos, as well as big flocks of pelicans and seasonal flamingos. Elephant-lovers shouldn’t miss Amboseli National Park. There are few locations where you can get so close to these giants, many of which carry enormous tusks. Visit one of the Laikipia Big Five reserves at the base of Mt Kenya for exclusive luxury. Some of these reserves are very remote and can realistically only be visited on a fly-in safari. If you like to get off-the-beaten-track, head north to Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves. Aside from elephant, you’ll see several animals adapted to the arid environment of this dry-country region. Most notable perhaps is the gerenuk, a gazelle with a disproportionately long neck that allows it to reach leaves that other antelopes can’t. If you’re an adventurous traveler, consider a trip to Lake Turkana near the Ethiopian border. Wildlife is scarce in this area of desert, but the melting pot of vanishing traditional cultures makes a visit here truly special.”
What is the best time of the year for a trip in Kenya?
“The best time for wildlife viewing in Kenya is in the Dry season, from late June to October. Animals tend to spread out during the Wet season, but as the bush dries out, they congregate around rivers and waterholes. The thinning vegetation also helps to make animal spotting easier in the Dry season. I wouldn’t rule out traveling in the Wet season though. The wettest months, April and May, are perhaps best avoided as some of the roads become difficult to drive and some parks and reserves effectively close. However, November through to March is a beautiful time as everything is green and the sky is free of dust. And there are always animals around, even if you have to work a little bit harder to find them. As this is the low season, you might be able to get a good deal at this time. ”
Will I see the Big Five?
“You’ll be able to see a lot of different animals on a 2-week safari in Kenya, including most, if not all, of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard). Lion, elephant and buffalo are quite easy to see in Kenya. You’ll find them in most parks and reserves. Leopard is present throughout the country, even outside of protected areas, but these secretive cats are often difficult to spot. You sometimes find them lazing in a tree in the middle of the day, but your best chance to encounter one is at dawn or dusk when they are most active. Not all Kenyan parks are home to rhino, Africa’s second-bulkiest mammal. You’ll see plenty, though, if you head to Laikipia or Lake Nakuru NP. While chasing the Big Five is fun, encountering a variety of animals is what counts. Seeing giraffes fighting, a cheetah with cubs, or a pride of lions stalking a zebra is what it is all about. The quality of your safari won’t depend on whether you’ve seen the Big Five or not.”
How much will a 14-day Kenya safari cost?
“You’ll find a wide range of prices for a 2-week safari in Kenya. You can use the filters on SafariBookings.com to narrow down your priorities, but here are some rough figures to give an idea of prices. Two-week mid-range lodge tours start at US$2800 per person. Shared budget tours start at US$2000 per person and Luxury tours start at around US$7000 per person. The overall price depends on several factors. The level of the lodging makes a big difference to the cost. There is a choice of budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation available at most parks and reserves. Note though that there are different kinds of luxury lodges. Some of them are very rustic. These ecolodges aim to leave a small footprint and blend into the environment. These are usually small and intimate, offering personalized service and great food. Other luxury lodges are more conventionally high end with all mod cons available. Mid-range lodges can be tented camps or no-frills hotels, while budget accommodation is more basic. Camping tours are usually the most budget-friendly, especially if you join a group tour. You can consider traveling out of season too. Not only is this a good way to reduce costs, it’s a beautiful time of the year and fewer visitors are around.”

Airport pick-up at Jomo Kenyatta international airport and transfer to Holiday Inn hotel inn for overnight stay.
Pick up from the Hilton hotel after break fast and drive south through Maasai country to the plains below Mt. Kilimanjaro where Amboseli is situated. After a stopover lunch at the lodge, we proceed to the scenic Amboseli National Park for a game drive returning to the Amboseli Serena lodge in the evening for a sun downer. Full board meals.
After a leisurely breakfast, we explore the park through morning and afternoon game drives. We have sufficient time for relaxation at the Amboseli Serena lodge, complete with the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. Amboseli National park is one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya. It is situated close to the Kenya-Tanzania border. The Park lies at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,896m) whose snow-capped summit presents a splendid view on clear days. Amboseli National Park is often referred to as “The home of Elephants’ some of the largest Elephant herds are found here. The Game Park also contains vast groups of Zebras, Wildebeests, Giraffes, Buffalos, Hippos and Antelopes. Also to be found in Amboseli are lions, leopards, Cheetahs, Rhinos and many species of plain game.
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Lodge . Full board meals.
We leave Amboseli, viewing game as we drive via Nairobi to the Aberdares to enjoy the experience of staying in a Tree Hotel or lodge overlooking floodlit waterholes where wildlife and birds regularly visit. Over 40 species of wildlife inhabit the Aberdare mountain ranges, hiding in the heavily forested slopes and in the upper moor lands. The Aberdares is noted as a rhino sanctuary but keep an eye out for the elusive rare bongo, which is best, spotted in the upper bamboo zone and hypericum scrub.
Dinner and overnight at Tree Hotel. Full board meals.
After breakfast, we proceed further north across the Equator to the edge of the Northern Frontier. We arrive in time for lunch and we have an afternoon game drive returning in time for a sun downer and dinner at the Samburu Ashnil lodge or Samburu Lodge. Full board meals. Samburu is part of a lava plain that includes a diverse landscape of thorn scrub, red dirt, dried river beds, broken volcanic rock, steep hills, and rocky outcroppings. This reserve is becoming one of Kenya’s most admired stops after the Mara. Sights of the peculiarly branched doum palms and thorn trees give an unusual look to the region.
The whole day will be spent relaxing and leisurely exploring the Samburu National Reserve through morning and afternoon game drives. You may opt to do some of the activities offered at the lodges and a visit to Samburu Villages at an extra cost. The light and vast openness creates a lonesome panoramic beauty and the permanent water supply acts like a lure for the abundant species found here. The region is home to the uncommon Grevy’s zebra with huge fury ears, gerenuk antelope standing on hind legs to feed, Somali ostriches with distinct blue legs and the shy Oryx. Elephant and crocodile are guaranteed sightings, excellent bird watching with numerous varieties of weaverbirds and the martial eagle. Leopard sighting is also a special feature here.
We enjoy a final early morning game drive in the Samburu reserve then depart for the Mt. Kenya region. Arrival at the lodge in time for you to enjoy the facilities of the lodge. Explore Mount Kenya National Park or take an optional tour to the nearby Sweetwater’s Reserve which is home to Chimpanzees. Sweetwater’s is the only sanctuary for rehabilitation in Kenya of these widely abused chimpanzees with two groups living in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. The site is also a dedicated black rhino breeding area.
Morning drive via the Nyahururu Falls down to the shallow soda Lake Bogoria and later to the beautiful lake Baringo where you may enjoy the pleasure of an evening bird walk. Dinner and overnight at the Lake Baringo lodge. The Nyahururu Falls also known as Thomson Falls was named after Joseph Thomson who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the early 1880s; these falls are shaped by the waters of the Ewaso Narok River and plunge over 72m into a rift, spraying the dark forest below. In the spectacular Lake Bogoria; hot springs and geysers are the main attractions. The lake has been called ‘the new home of the flamingo’ with a nomad population of up to two million birds. For the bird enthusiasts, Kesubo swamp located north of the park is home to more than 200 species of birds. Lake Baringo is the most Northerly of Kenya’s small Rift Valley lakes; creased with papyrus and well developed acacia forest. Hippos, crocodiles and monitor lizards are effortlessly seen from the shore, as is a magnificent display of water birds. This is Kenya’s bird watching centre with over 1200 different species native to the country and more than 450 sighted here. A bird watcher’s haven but beware, this is malaria land so it is best to come prepared with plenty of mosquito repellent.
We enjoy a morning boat ride in search of hippo, crocodile, and fish eagle. After a sumptuous lunch, we then proceed to Lake Nakuru and the Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive. The park covers 180 sq km and is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced to the park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern end. The park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists’ delight with more than 400 species of bird found here. We spend the night at Kembu campsite just outside of town.
After an early breakfast, we depart for Masai Mara National Reserve via the Great Rift Valley arriving in time for lunch at the lodge. We then proceed on an afternoon game drive returning to the lodge for a delicious sundowner, and dinner at the Keekorok Lodge lodge or Masai Mara Sarova Luxury tented camp. The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and fertile riverine woodland and one glimpse is enough to explain its appeal; it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife. Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common.
The next 2 days shall be spent viewing game, in the early morning hours and in the evenings as this is when we have the best chances of seeing wildlife. The ultimate action here is without doubt the annual wildebeest exodus in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October. Hot air balloon safari can be arranged and a cultural visit to Maasai villages for the children to the Maasai culture and for a traditional dances. You may also opt to do some of the activities offered by the lodge. On clear days, the Masai Mara offers fantastic orange tinted sunsets and you will definitely want to capture this moment while sipping on a sun downer back at the Keekorok Lodge or Masai Mara Sarova Luxury tented camp.
After a final early morning game drive, we depart for Nairobi arriving in the afternoon hours. Drop off at Nairobi Holiday Inn hotel to freshen up before going to the Carnivore Restaurant for dinner at 1900 hrs. Overnight stay at the Holiday Inn.

Embark on your thrilling two-week adventure as we set off from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park, a 3-4 hour drive along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. Along the way, you’ll pass picturesque local homesteads and vibrant plantations. As we enter Maasai country, keep an eye out for the herders in their traditional plaid wraps. The magnificent peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro signals our arrival at Amboseli. Your experienced Africa Kenya Safaris driver/guide will accompany you in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser Jeep, your ultimate viewing platform for the upcoming fourteen days. Settle into your safari lodge or tented camp, enjoy a delectable lunch, and embark on your first exciting game drive. Keep a lookout for the majestic elephants that often roam alone or in family groups. Later in the evening, if weather permits, witness the iconic image of Kilimanjaro’s peak emerging from the clouds.
Full Day at Amboseli Park
Welcome to your first morning on safari! Embrace the tranquility of the soft morning light as both humans and animals awaken to the day’s adventures. Today marks the first of several special discovery days, where we’ll spend three days exploring multiple parks. After a delicious breakfast, we’ll hop into the 4×4 and begin our exploration of Amboseli Park. Keep your eyes peeled for buffalo, rhino, zebra, monkeys, baboons, lions, and cheetahs. Take a break at Observation Hill, stretch your legs, and enjoy the diverse habitats of the park. Marvel at the busy birdlife near the marshes, home to herons, falcons, eagles, egrets, pelicans, crakes, and Egyptian geese. After lunch, continue your drives and get to know your knowledgeable guide, who will be your host, friend, and teacher throughout the safari. Capture more picture-perfect moments of Kilimanjaro before returning to your accommodation for dinner and another exciting safari evening.
Amboseli – Aberdare Park
Today, we embark on a drive through Amboseli once more before heading to our next destination, Aberdare Park, a land of cool lush forests and mountain lakes, a different twist to the typical African safari experience. Discover unique wildlife, including buffalo, giant antelope, forest hog, hyenas, warthogs, and monkeys, and perhaps spot them from your special “tree hotel” balcony. Choose to stay at the Treetops Lodge or The Ark and relish the alpine beauty of Aberdare.
Aberdare – Samburu Reserve
As the morning arrives, we bid farewell to the cool mountain climate of Aberdare and venture into the sunlit plains of Samburu National Reserve. This less-touristy park is home to big cats and plenty of elephants, offering a unique safari experience. If you desire, we can explore neighboring reserves like Shaba and Buffalo Springs, providing a contrast of woodlands and forests. Spend the evening at our Samburu lodge or tented camp.
Full Day at Samburu Reserve
Prepare for an exhilarating full day of game drives at Samburu Reserve, a unique opportunity as other safaris are often ending by this time. Witness the lifeline of the park, the Ewaso Ngiro River, attracting thirsty lions and elephants. Keep an eye out for Samburu’s distinctive species, such as the beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, and Grevy’s zebra. For a cultural experience, we can visit the nearby Samburu People’s village and learn about their way of life. Spend the night at our Samburu accommodation.
Samburu Reserve – Ol Pejeta
Before leaving Samburu, we’ll take one last spin around the plains, soaking in the breathtaking vistas, and then head to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia. This reserve boasts the complete “Big Five,” including the rare African wild dog. Most notably, Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Relax and share stories over dinner at our Ol Pejeta accommodation.
Ol Pejeta – Lake Naivasha
Today, we travel to the cool shores of Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake teeming with hippos, zebras, giraffes, and antelope. For an extraordinary experience, consider a bicycle safari at Hell’s Gate Park, where you can pedal alongside buffalo, antelope, and giraffes. End the day with dinner at our Lake Naivasha safari lodge or tented camp.
Lake Naivasha – Masai Mara
Embark on a sailing safari on Lake Naivasha, gliding past hippos and observing buffalo and antelope grazing nearby. Enjoy a bonus trip to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for close-up views of wildlife like wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, and giraffe. Next, journey to the magnificent Masai Mara National Reserve, the crown jewel of Kenya’s parks. Home to the “Big Five,” the Mara offers iconic African landscapes and a wealth of wildlife. Spend the night at our Masai Mara lodge or tented camp.
Full Day at Masai Mara Reserve

Overall it was a trip that we will never forget.
We had an amazing time! Arriving to Nairobi, we were welcomed at the airport and taken to our hotel. The hotel was very nice and modern. The next morning we drove to Amboseli. Our driver was very friendly and knowledgeable when it came to animals. We enjoyed the drives a lot.
We were able to see the big 5, and 16 lions close by!
We had a good time. Our drivers Hasan in Tanzania and Jacob in Kenya were nice and helpful. All the accommodations and transport were good. Food was good in all the places. There was delay in the flight from Chicago, hence they gave us seat in United and flew directly to Paris.
My trip to Kenya and Tanzania was truly spectacular!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and am very happy with how everything unfolded with almost no glitches. The lodges were really beautiful, and the food plentiful and delicious. Everyone from our safari guides to the people in the lodges and in between were very courteous and helpful. Thank you so much for your help. I am a very happy customer.

14 Days Kenya and Tanzania Safari
Extraordinary safaris.

Kenya and Tanzania have great safari deals. Get to observe the wild wonders of these two destinations. In this itinerary, we shall begin our safari in Amboseli. The salty dust enchants wildebeest of all sizes in its water sources, including the striking herds of elephants. From the savannah and the acacia landscape, you can spot Mount Kilimanjaro.
Tarangire Park has a high concentration of wildlife. It is home to several bird species and the largest animals in Africa. The park has prolific vegetation and large baobab trees. There are also tree-climbing pythons. We shall head to Ngorongoro volcanic craters.
The setting is stunning, with rich terrains. This makes an idyllic grazing ground attracting the big game. Ngorongoro is among the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.’ You stand a chance of watching the endangered black rhino that is rare. We have also included Serengeti in the itinerary for you to observe predators as they hunt. The Park hosts the largest population of large mammals on the planet. Additionally, this is a birdwatching Mecca. Enjoy bush meals, walking safari, and hot air balloon safari.
Your Kenya and Tanzania safari is not complete without visiting the Maasai Mara. It is the Kenya jewel for game watching. The bluff is another popular tourist destination in the globe. Throughout the year there are high numbers of animals. Our guides are professional and friendly, and we guarantee a mind-blowing experience.
