Packing List for a 2 Day Kruger Tour From Johannesburg

When embarking on a short 2 day safari tour of Kruger National Park from Johannesburg, packing light is key. You’ll be moving around a lot and space in the tour vehicle is limited. Focus on the essentials:

Pack comfortable, casual clothing like t-shirts, shorts, light pants, and breathable shirts. Bring a jacket for cool early mornings and evenings. Good walking shoes, socks, and a hat are must-haves. Don’t forget pajamas, underwear, and any toiletries you may need.

A good pair of binoculars is essential for game viewing. Look for a pair that magnifies between 8x to 12x for the best experience. Binoculars allow you to get an up-close look at wildlife from a safe distance.

You’ll want to capture plenty of memories from your safari, so bring your trusty camera or smartphone. For the best wildlife shots, a DSLR camera with a long zoom lens (at least 200- 400mm) is ideal. Make sure you have plenty of batteries and extra memory cards.

Other Items

Pack a flashlight with extra batteries, insect repellant to ward off mosquitoes, sun protection like sunglasses and sunscreen, a basic first aid kit, hand wipes, and any important medications that you may need. Don’t forget your ID, passport, tickets, cash, credit cards, and any vouchers for your tour.

By focusing on the essential gear and packing light, you’ll be ready to set off on your exciting 2 day Kruger safari adventure from Johannesburg. The thrill of spotting wildlife in their natural habitat will make any inconvenience of limited packing space worthwhile! Enjoy your trip and happy game viewing!

Top Sightings on a 2 Day Safari in South Africa

A short safari is the perfect way to get a glimpse into South Africa’s incredible wildlife. Even with just two days in Kruger National Park, you have a good chance of spotting the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo.

Lions are the kings of the jungle, and seeing them in their natural habitat is a thrill. Prides of lions—groups of up to three males, a dozen females, and their cubs—lounge under trees and roam the open grasslands. Listen for their distinctive roaring, especially at dawn and dusk.

These elusive big cats are solitary and nocturnal, so spotting one is really special. Look for them draped over tree branches or stalking prey in the bush. Leopards are powerful swimmers and climbers, and they stash their kills up in the trees to keep them safe from scavengers.

Both black and white rhinos roam Kruger, though the black rhino is more commonly seen. Watch for them grazing on grass and shrubs or wallowing in mud holes to cool off and deter insects. Sadly, rhino poaching is an ongoing threat, so anti-poaching units actively monitor the park.

Enormous elephant herds—including mothers, babies, and young males—wander through the park. Bull elephants can stand over 13 feet tall! Watch them strip leaves from trees, gather at watering holes, and spray themselves with dirt and water. The sounds of their rumbling stomachs and flapping ears are unforgettable.

A two day safari adventure gives you a glimpse into the circle of life in Kruger National Park. With some patience and luck, you’ll spot amazing wildlife and gain an appreciation for these remarkable animals in their native habitat. A safari is an experience you’ll never forget!

The best 2 day Kruger Tours

Price of a 2 day kruger safari.

The cost of a 2 day Kruger safari depends on the type of accommodation you choose and whether it’s located inside or outside the park. On average 2 day safaris start from $500 per person for budget rest camps to $800 for mid range accommodation to upwards of $1,000 for luxurious lodges.

For those on a lower budget, self-drive Kruger safaris are an option however you won’t see as much wildlife as you would with an expert guide, who communicates with other guides on walkie-talkie and knows exactly where to find each particular animal.

Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is a 2 day safari in kruger sufficient.

2 days is plenty to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of the Kruger. The number of days needed to properly do a Kruger safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

A longer safari would be better as you’ll have more time in and really immerse yourself in the bush experience, however this depends on the amount of time you have available and budget.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. On a safari trip, you can even break up the drive to or from Kruger with an overnight stay at the Mala Mala Game Reserve or Balule Private Nature Reserve .

Overall, 2 days is a good amount of time for a safari in the Kruger if it is part of a larger South Africa tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal if possible.

Accommodation offered on a 2 day Kruger safari?

After a long day surveying the incredible South African landscape and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation the Kruger has to offer. The accommodation here is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

More than a dozen rest camps offer the choice of camping or staying in a comfortable self-catering bungalow. Some safaris stay outside the park, at one of several lodges that lie close to an entrance gate. These accommodation options include simple backpacker lodges, smart chain hotels and owner-managed boutique properties.

Of particular note are luxury lodges where you can see wildlife as they come down to the waterhole to drink. From the comfort of your own African themed accommodation, sip an evening cocktail from your wooden veranda or relax in a massive bathtub before an incredible  culinary evening experience.

Animals on a Kruger safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Kruger! The massive expanse of the Kruger National Park is home to over 147 species of mammals, 114 reptile species, 51 snake species, 49 fish species and a massive 508 species of birds, a number unrivaled anywhere else in South Africa.

The reserve is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas as well as numerous hippos and leopards.

Kruger is an important stronghold for both rhino species: the larger and more placid white rhino is common and very likely to be seen over the course of 2 days, but you would be very lucky to see the more scarce and secretive black rhino.

All the big cats are found and lions, in particular, are frequently seen in the south of the park. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time.

Fly or drive to Kruger?

On a 2 day safari, flying and driving to the Kruger are both viable options, with flying bringing obvious time savings (approximately 55 minutes from all three locations of Johannesburg, Gauteng and O.R. Tambo International Airport) and incredible views of the wildlife and landscape.

Flying of course comes with a higher price tag however they do typically include top-end accommodation and all of your activities. The drive to the Kruger from Johannesburg takes 4-5 hours with the quickest route via the N12 and N4, a 245 mile drive.

Driving is generally cheaper, and you will see some interesting countryside en route. And, with an early start, you’ll be in Kruger for lunch. Kruger is further from seaside destinations such as Durban, Cape Town or the Garden Route, so traveling overland isn’t a realistic option unless you’ve enough spare days to treat it as a road trip.

If you decide to fly, different airports service Kruger, and your best choice will be influenced by where you’ll be staying. The busiest flight hub is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, which lies outside the national park, but offers good access to southern Kruger via Numbi Gate (40km/25mi) or Phabeni Gate (60km/36mi).

Alternatives include Skukuza Airport, which stands inside the park close to Skukuza Rest Camp, and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, which is near central Kruger’s Orpen Gate.

How much spending money do I need for a 2 day Kruger safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $320 for a Kruger safari per person per day, including food and accommodation.

What animals will I see on a 2 day Kruger safari tour?

Visitors on a 2 day Kruger safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 2 day Kruger safari?

The best time to go on a 2 day Kruger safari is the dry winter season from May to October when the bushveld is more open, allowing for better visibility. To avoid crowds, avoid the public area south of the Sabie River and long weekends or local school holidays.

I went on a budget and a luxury safari in Africa. Here's how they compare — and the one thing you really need to look for when booking.

  • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
  • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
  • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 12:38 PM EDT / CBS News

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funnelling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
