Guide to Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Hotel at Walt Disney World Resort

2 night disney cruise

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a highly-hyped new hotel offering 2-night experiences at Walt Disney World. The themed resort behind Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios is now open, and this guide covers everything you need to know–including pricing, 2023 reservation info, what’s included, and more! ( Updated April 11, 2023 .)

We’ve been “aboard” Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser twice now. Once for a preview and once for the inaugural voyage aboard the starship Halcyon, jewel of the Chandrila Star Line. We’ll be honest with you–this is not going to be for everyone, or even most visitors to Walt Disney World. As a threshold matter, you should determine whether this is good fit for your party by reading our spoiler-free  Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Review .

The nature of the experience alone will eliminate many families visiting Walt Disney World. Then there’s the cost, which makes it a total non-starter for many others. We paid $6,634.32 for a party of 4–or $1,658.58 per person. For more thoughts on this expensive pricing, see Is Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Worth the High Cost?

On a positive note, Walt Disney World is  finally  starting special offers on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. There are currently two discounts available, with the better being  Save 30% Off Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser . However, that’s only for Annual Passholders on select Spring & Summer 2023 voyages.

The other offer is  Save Up to $700 on 2-Night Disney World Resort Stays + Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Voyages . With this discount, you save money on 2-night stays at select resorts when paired with a select Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser voyage through September 30, 2023.

Unfortunately, these deals follow the unprecedented move for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser to Slash Voyages . Our commentary there essentially expressed frustration that Walt Disney World was not fixing the underlying issue:  pricing . This new discount does exactly that, so kudos to Disney for releasing these special offers. Hopefully they aren’t too little or too late.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, we should probably cover the basics of the Star Wars “Hotel” at Walt Disney World. As for what it is (and why the air quotes around hotel), that’s difficult to concisely explain. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser has an immersive ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ style story layered on top, as well as opportunities for nearly-endless show elements. It’s an unprecedented hospitality and entertainment endeavor, with the end product being awesome or alienating, depending upon your perspective.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is unlike anything Walt Disney World has ever done, an amalgamation of a bunch of different entertainment offerings. It’s not really comparable to a theme park visit or traditional hotel stay. Instead, think of it more like a cruise on land–as the name suggests–with all-inclusive (mostly) food & drinks and comparable programming. Even the cabins are more similar to cruise staterooms, as you can see in our Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Room Review, Photos & Video .

2 night disney cruise

Unlike Disney Cruise Line, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort puts guests in the center of an interactive adventure that they control. Think of this as a hybrid between a live action role playing game and the all-inclusive resort hands-on ‘enrichment through entertainment’ experience.

Disney has tested similar concepts like Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser before, but this is envelope-pushing in terms of its scope and level of immersion. It’s also unlike a traditional hotel. About the only similarity is that it has guest cabins with beds. Many of the amenities and features you’d expect of a normal Walt Disney World resort are not present at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

2 night disney cruise

In fact, comparing Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser side-by-side to a Deluxe Resort reveals that it doesn’t check many of the same boxes. If you want a luxurious experience with a pool, spa, concierge, well-appointed rooms, and more–you’ll be disappointed. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser has none of those things. It doesn’t even have windows in the guest rooms–it has simulated portals into outer space. Although it’s on land, it’s pretending to be a spaceship, meaning it doesn’t have anything you wouldn’t find on a spaceship.

None of this is to say that Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is lacking–it just is not what you might expect from a typical Walt Disney World resort at this price point. The focus here is much more on the immersive experience, role-playing, and themed environment. Suffice to say, don’t conflate “expensive” with “luxurious” as this is something different entirely.

With that said, let’s dig into all the details, because there is a ton to know about Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort!

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Updates

2 night disney cruise

Voyages aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser have now been released through September 2023. Above is a look at November through January 2023. Fewer than half of the departures this holiday season are sold out, which is the busiest time of year at Walt Disney World.

Worse yet, there isn’t a single itinerary that’s sold out in 2023. Keep in mind that people generally book vacations–especially expensive ones like this–about 6 months in advance. Most people aren’t taking multi-thousand dollar vacations on a whim. It’s probably concerning to the company that this new experience with incredibly limited capacity already is not filling up.

2 night disney cruise

With that said, availability fluctuates a  lot . Keep in mind that one reservation can be the difference between “sold out” and “available,” meaning that all it takes is one cancellation or even a modification to different dates to go from available to not available.

You really need to call (407-939-1800) for accurate availability if your dates are within the next 3 months. You might find that there are options for dates that look sold out, or that some voyages that appear available are actually gone.

2 night disney cruise

If you’re already looking ahead to doing Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in Fall 2023, it’s likely those won’t go on sale until sometime in early 2023. As you can see from the availability calendar above, there’s really no rush to make reservations even once they are available.

The “new ship smell” has already worn off the Halcyon, so dates selling out quickly is unlikely to be an issue going forward. If anything, you might benefit by waiting. Walt Disney World is likely going to need to offer discounts sooner rather than later on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

2 night disney cruise

Disney recently has been conducting paid research on guest “perceptions, observations, and attitudes” towards stays on the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” at Walt Disney World. It’s possible this is either routine feedback or there’s a greater sense of urgency and importance if the company needs to make adjustments to increase bookings.

With only 100 rooms to fill, it is likely concerning to the company that many peak dates this holiday season–and absolutely nothing in 2023–have not yet sold out. It’ll be interesting to follow the availability situation to see how quickly changes are made, or whether discounts are offered.

2 night disney cruise

Even if voyages don’t sell out, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Walt Disney World  not  offer discounts for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser until mid-2023.

Releasing special offers within a year of the debut date doesn’t send a good message to investors and company analysts about the success of this costly investment. Disney may also want to maintain the appearance of a premium product–with commensurate pricing–to consumers. Discounting sets a precedent, and one that’s difficult to undo.

2 night disney cruise

When you do call to make your reservation, have all contact information (names, ages, etc.) for everyone in your party ready as well as your Disney account email address (if you somehow don’t have one, make it before calling). Also be prepared for lengthy hold times and being transferred a couple of times. Wait times are sometimes multiple hours; on busy days, the call queue closes completely.

While we’ve found the reps booking Galactic Starcruiser to be knowledgeable and experienced, they’re also very “careful” with information. For example, they won’t simply tell you which dates are cheapest or offer pricing info certain suites–you have to provide specific dates and info, and then they’ll give you a quote for those dates–and only those dates. It can be a bit tedious.

2 night disney cruise

If you don’t want to hassle with it yourself, we highly recommend requesting a free/no obligation quote from an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner and having them deal with the headaches so you don’t have to. That travel agency, and presumably most others, have dedicated planners that are already experienced in booking Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser who will be happy to assist you with the process, help you choose the most economical dates, best add-ons, and so forth.

Just keep in mind that options, especially the Galaxy Class Suite, Grand Captain Suite, and Captain’s Table, are limited and might not match the calendar above. In the last few months, availability has fluctuated wildly. Using an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner is definitely the way to go when booking Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser–it’s easier and they can monitor for availability and deal with calling in to manage the reservation since nothing can be done online (and there are always wait times on the phone).

2 night disney cruise

We’ve completed our first voyage on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, paying full price for the expensive experience. ( Well, we shared the room with 2 other adults, so technically we paid half price–but the point is that there was no discount! ) We’ll have comprehensive reviews and coverage of the actual experience for paying guests in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

With that update out of the way, here’s everything else we know about Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort…

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Experience Details

2 night disney cruise

Prior to their departure, guests preparing for their voyages aboard the Halcyon are encouraged to purchase Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser costumes sold exclusively on shopDisney.com . Options range from $70 to $150 for adults and $60 to $100 for kids. Each seemingly serves a different purpose, so I guess you’ll “need” to buy multiple wardrobe changes to avoid any intergalactic faux pas or style mistakes.

ShopDisney’s merchandise is available for purchase exclusively by guests with a qualifying Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser reservation. Eligible guests are eligible to buy these outfits on shopDisney.com up to 60 days prior to their Galactic Starcruiser reservation check-in date and up to 30 days after their check-out date. In order to complete the transaction, the email address used to sign into shopDisney must also be linked to your Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser reservation.

2 night disney cruise

Following that and all other pre-departure preparations, the actual adventure begins when guests arrive at the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Terminal at Walt Disney World and check in for their two-night experience. Guests then enter a Launch Pod for transport into space. Through windows, they’ll see themselves leave Florida behind, jumping into hyperspace and drawing closer to the Halcyon, which is the starcruiser they’ll call home for the next two nights.

When the Launch Pod docks with the Halcyon and the airlock opens, guests step into the ship’s main deck Atrium to begin their journey through a galaxy far, far away. A visit aboard the Halcyon becomes a multi-day story that interweaves with members of the crew, other passengers, familiar Star Wars characters, and an excursion to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

2 night disney cruise

While staying aboard the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser, guests interact with an eclectic group of characters both familiar and new. This includes the Halcyon’s strong and charismatic captain, a plucky ship’s mechanic, and a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger.

This singing sensation is a featured performer during one of the dining experiences inside the Crown of Corellia Dining Room. The enticing supper club’s name is an homage to Corellia, the planet known galaxy-wide for its shipyards that gave us not only the Halcyon starcruiser, but also the Millennium Falcon . The dining room is a bright and welcoming hall that serves breakfast and lunch to passengers before transitioning each evening into a lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins.

2 night disney cruise

During their all-immersive experience aboard the Halcyon, guests are invited to delve deeper into their personal adventures by participating in onboard activities, interacting with characters, crew, other passengers they meet, and becoming part of the action.

Some of these activities include wielding a lightsaber and facing off against a training remote, visiting the starcruiser’s Bridge to learn about ship systems and how to operate them, and operating the starcruiser’s navigation and defense systems–skills that come in handy during a journey through this adventure-filled galaxy.

2 night disney cruise

Guests are able to explore the Halcyon and discover hidden spaces deep in the mechanics of the ship–like the Engineering Room, which is perfect for uncovering secrets or holding secret meetings. Another interesting spot is the Sublight Lounge, where guests of all ages can enjoy libations and games in a stylish setting.

On the outside, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort looks like an industrial bunker, and not an actual starship. When you enter the hotel, you’ll only be seeing the terminal and Launch Pod, not the Halcyon itself. Any representations of the Halcyon from inside the hotel are simulated. The exterior of the hotel and surrounding area is incredibly unimpressive and industrial.

2 night disney cruise

Additionally, there are very few guest rooms in the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort–only 100 rooms total. That should make for an intimate (and in-demand) experience as compared to other resorts at Walt Disney World, many of which have well over 1,000 rooms.

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort is physically located backstage behind Disney’s Hollywood Studios near Cast Member parking and the show buildings for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. However, every window in the Halcyon, including those in each guest cabin, has a view into outer space, with ever-changing vistas as the ship progresses from place to place.

2 night disney cruise

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort is not open for the general public to visit. This is unlike any other hotel at Walt Disney World, and even the DCL comparison doesn’t do it full justice. A docked ship that would have amenities and facilities that overlap with a standard hotel, but this won’t have things like a pool, spa, tennis courts, or literally any outdoor recreation options.

The Galactic Starcruiser is more like a long-form, multi-part attraction or on-board cruise excursion. Think of it along those lines–it’s an immersive experience…that’s so long it offers a place to sleep, too.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s a sample itinerary for Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser:

2 night disney cruise

With some basics about the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort out of the way, let’s cover other questions about the Star Wars hotel that we’ve been receiving from readers…

What’s Included

2 night disney cruise

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser vacation packages include:

  • 2-night stay in a cabin or suite
  • Ongoing, immersive and interactive entertainment, where choices determine your experience
  • Food and beverages on the starcruiser (excluding alcoholic and specialty beverages) and a quick-service meal at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo or other select locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
  • Admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for your planetary excursion to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
  • Valet parking
  • Exclusive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser MagicBand

2 night disney cruise

Walt Disney World has released sample pricing for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort. Above is a look at rates for departures on weeknights in the fall off-season.

A few things to note here. First, this is the off-season at Walt Disney World and it’s when rack rates at all hotels are at their lowest levels of the year. For example, Grand Floridian rooms start at $742 per night for those same dates but jump to over $850 per night for many dates in October.

Suffice to say, pricing for weekends or more popular travel dates could end up being considerably more expensive. With that said, we’re honestly surprised by how “low” the prices are for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

2 night disney cruise

Obviously, this experience is not cheap. To the contrary, it is very, very expensive. Total voyage costs of ~$5,000 to $6,000 for off-season weekdays is a ton of money and suggests peak dates are thousands of dollars more expensive.

However, that’s still less money than we anticipated (a prior version of this post predicted costs of around $3,000 per person). Some dates could end up being on the more expensive end of that spectrum, but the starting prices–and costs for families of 4 are a pleasant surprise. Again, it’s still an exorbitant sum of money…just less exorbitant than the outrageous numbers we were bracing ourselves for.

We’re sure many–if not most–of you will disagree with this. Perhaps it’s all about expectations. We expected this to be astronomically priced given what the experience entails, its all-inclusive nature, and how Disney prices both its luxury resorts and cruises. Others might’ve had different expectations than us. No matter how you slice this, it’s expensive. But it could’ve been worse.

2 night disney cruise

Another thing to consider here is that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort is essentially an all-inclusive boutique hotel plus an interactive live entertainment experience. It’s labor intensive but does not have many rooms, meaning that the price-points here are high.

Scarcity is also a huge factor. Some have derided this as a hotel or experience for the top 1%, but that’s actually not accurate. On any given day, less than .01% of the guests at Walt Disney World will be staying at Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort. This isn’t to say it’ll only appeal to the wealthy…just that an infinitesimally small number of Walt Disney World’s overall guest population will be staying here.

There are a lot of diehard Star Wars and Disney fans with large amounts of disposable income. Look no further than the prices Savi’s Workshop for Handbuilt Lightsabers is able to charge for that experience due to its incredibly limited capacity. This resort is similar to that, but with a more elaborate and involved experience.

Reservations & How to Book?

2 night disney cruise

Reservations for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort can be booked by calling (407) 939-1800 to confirm availability and book your voyage. Again, reservations cannot be made online. The only way to bypass long wait times on the phone is by contacting an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner and having them reserve your vacation package for you–that’ll save you time and work, as they’ll do your planning.

If the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort is something that interests you, we’d highly recommend booking it sooner rather than later. This is for a couple of reasons. First, prices are likely to go up–Disney rarely decreases prices. The ‘sample pricing’ graphic you see below is likely the cheapest Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser will ever be.

Second, this is an ambitious and envelope-pushing idea, and is currently in a state of ‘pure & pristine’ Imagineering. Over time, compromises and changes are likely to be made in service of operational realities, changing demographics, and guest feedback.

2 night disney cruise

Third, if for some reason this concept does not work and Disney is “forced” to decrease prices to attract more guests…more of the aforementioned compromises will be made to preserve the company’s margins on the Galactic Starcruiser. Cuts will be made to entertainment or dining (charging extra for food & beverage is an obvious way to cut the up-front price while increasing overall revenue).

This is all speculation on my part. However, this is a truly unprecedented project for Walt Disney World, and iteration is likely to continue based upon guest feedback and behavior patterns. This will likely begin as a thematically ambitious experience with structured live action roleplaying plus minimal real world intrusions. It’ll likely be aimed at the hardcore Star Wars fans who want something incredibly immersive and all-encompassing. And that’s largely who it’ll attract at first–Star Wars zealots and other hardcore fans who save or splurge on this.

2 night disney cruise

What the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort evolves into depends in large part upon both the effectiveness of Disney’s messaging and potential guests actually listening to marketing. Walt Disney World is already stressing that this is not a typical hotel stay, but that doesn’t mean people will hear or comprehend that.

Ultimately, it’s possible that Imagineering will fine-tune the offerings aboard the starship Halcyon, and it’ll age like a fine wine. This could mean new storylines, seasonal events, added characters, and who knows what else. We were surprised to find the experience firing on all cylinders during the inaugural voyage, and were surprised by how well it appealed to guests of all ages and even mainstream audiences. There’s a lot of potential here.

With that said, it’s also possible that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort experience will be diluted after its first year or so (this is what we predicted prior to opening). The primary demographic could shift from hardcore fans making a big splurge to affluent guests wanting their first visit to Walt Disney World to consist of the very best of everything–basically, rich parents with kids who enjoy Star Wars. The latter group is far less interested in thematic and storytelling integrity, and more so in exclusivity and luxurious experiences. Over time, Imagineering will iterate on the concept so it comports with guest feedback and expectations.

YOUR THOUGHTS

What do you think about the addition of a boutique Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Resort to Walt Disney World? Will you be booking this? If not, what’s your maximum per person price-point for this experience? Would you prefer a more conventional hotel stay at a Star Wars-themed or decorated hotel? Do you agree or disagree with our advice and assessments? Any questions we can help you answer? Hearing your feedback–even when you disagree with us–is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts below in the comments!

To pay for 4 almost $58 per hour each for 40 hours, 6-8 hours sleeping, 5-6 hours at Galaxy’s Edge 2 hours eating(?). Pretending you’re on a “mission” or for aprox the same $$$ spend 7DAYS on a Disney Cruise with a show every night, free room service 24 hrs. Kids area they don’t want to leave, activities, adult area, pools, ports , private island—duh it’s a no brainer.

' src=

I’m with you on this. I predict that even the die hard Star Wars fans will use their rent money to do this once, but will not return for a second visit. Soon, this resort will have cycled through the fans that can and will pony up this kind of money for a single visit and this resort will be “re-imagined” as something else. I give it 2-3 years at best. OR, Disney will have to drastically cut the price. This would probably entail having to cut the experience as well.

' src=

I think another reason for the slow bookings is the cancellation policy. My son and I have been saving to go since the hotel was announced but if you cancel within 30 days you lose 100% of the cost. What we may do now is get to WDW first and then book while we are there. They do offer insurance to US residents for a cost but I’m Canadian. Hard to risk thousands of dollars if something occurs where you have to cancel.

' src=

Mike, as a Canadian, I feel like the strong rise of the US$ against all other currencies is a big reason to delay for international visitors. The trip costs 20% more now for us! I did not know that insurance is available for US residents (but not us? Boo), but now that I do, it just reminds me of all the financial risks in booking. Tom, I find it interesting that you noted how people usually book six months in advance, but not that no one had that much time for January 2023 because the dates did not drop until late August.

' src=

@StudentMama – That’s an excellent point about dates not dropping until August. At the time, I wondered what the holdup was.

Same goes for the strong dollar–it’s possible there are international visitors who want to do this, but are waiting for a more favorable exchange rate.

' src=

Star Wars super fan here. My excitement for this experience dropped significantly once I saw the itinerary.

For this to appeal to me, it would need to cost significantly less and last at least a day longer. This is basically $6k for two days and half of one of those days is at Hollywood Studios!

' src=

Posted on the other SW article as well: We just returned from this experience. Going in, I am a SW fan but not as deeply involved as my husband, adult son and young daughter. I thought I would enjoy it but absolutely labeled this as “once in a lifetime” expense. Within the first few hours, we were already planning a trip back. We LOVED this. I was shocked at how involved in the story I got.

On day 2, my daughter was too tired to continue in Batuu so I brought her back to the “ship” early while our son spent all day completing missions. He was invited to the “special moment” I believe you referenced, but the rest of our family was not. We want to go back as just a group of adults in order to experience the story in more depth than we could with a young child. There are a few things in Batuu that you can now do with the magicband+ that earn you credits that may or may not affect your titles and ratings in the app. It was odd wearing two bands into Batuu but worth it.

I really wish they would offer are “return cruiser” discount for people who would like to experience everything again. I did NOT dress up but did not feel it affected my story, however I would strongly consider dressing the part on our next visit.

Also, we arrived at around 12pm and were inside the building around 12:30 waiting in AC to go through the welcome video and get checked in. There were at least 20 families ahead of us in line when we arrived. We left the “ship” around 9:40 am and were checked out an in a taxi within 15 minutes so that sticking point has been smoothed out for sure.

' src=

I really want to do this sometime, but it is currently WAY too expensive. Inflation on the raise makes this completely unrealistic for me. Also, even though it is a unique experience, it is hard to justify paying for a few days on the Galactic Starcruiser when for the same money you can stay at another Disney Resort for longer and enjoy more amenities. They need to find a balance before I can even consider booking.

' src=

I love Disney and staying at the top resorts , I don’t mind Genie or even LL that much but this thing is where I draw the line . This is straight robbery lol

' src=

It’s just too much money if not everyone in your family is into star wars or larping. It would be completely wasted on two of my kids (one is too young; one is too shy) and my husband (I can’t even get him to wear a costume for halloween), so even though my oldest son and I would love it, we’d have to split up the family (not cost effective or how I want to spend my limited vacation time) or pay for three people who would be completely uninterested.

Now if they made this more like an actual cruise with something for everyone—a pool my husband and two kids could spend all day swimming in while me and my other kid did missions, or more family friendly activities you could just walk up and do without taking part in a plotline, I’d consider it.

' src=

Thanks for the update, Tom. Have you heard anything about the experience being changed for these 2023 dates? A previous GSC guest reported receiving an email that “New dates have now launched — Take a different path and live a new Star Wars story.” It could be just an invitation to come back and switch from helping the Resistance to the First Order; or it could be what you suspected about Disney altering the original experience for whatever of the many reasons it could claim.

We were planning the Halcyon for an anniversary trip. Here are the reasons we are now leaning No: 1) The booking process. I’m already tired after three calls of having to use the phone and wait on hold just for information. I’m sorry, I don’t want games. I want to be able to look online for prices and availability and make my choices based on that info, not trying to type a bunch of info into my own spreadsheet while live on the phone. 2) They also should just publish policies bloggers and Disney omit online that will make people hesitate to book until closer to their dates. For example, that you need to make a 20% deposit (so four digits) at booking, that you must pay in full 90 days out, or that you forfeit some of the cost for cancellations at less than 90 days out. All of that requires an incredible amount of *certainty* before booking that many still don’t have wrt travel. Think how quickly travel changed in Dec 2021 when Omicron showed up. 3) The trip report from the Disney mega fan who moderates the WDW subreddit. She gave a detailed story of how different things went wrong with her trip. No one thing was major, but she was unlucky enough to experience several different problems, including CMs letting uninvited people take up some spots in special secret side quests so that some invited people ran out of stations. The kicker was that her complaints to CMs onboard, phone calls during her cruise, and emails afterward have gone completely unanswered, unaddressed, and unmitigated. Not acceptable for any trip, and deeply disappointing and deflating for her on a trip of this $$$$ magnitude. 4) The Redditor (again, a pro-Disney mod with a long track record of sincere, positive posts about her WDW experiences) also had the misfortune to cruise with fellow passengers who did not dress up. She said it was 80% not in costume on her cruise. Nope! I take costumes as a signal of both level of fandom AND level of commitment to the role-playing component. Her description was way off from others’ experiences, but highlights a major component of what would affect my enjoyment that is wholly outside my and Disney’s control. It made me fear that my 2023 plans would be ruined by fellow passengers who are just rich people looking to try the new-new rather than huge fans who came to play. For context, I have cosplayed at fan conventions and am considering the London SW Celebration as an alternative to the Halcyon. A week in London plus airfare is the same cost as this cruise!) I am not wealthy. This trip would require a year of saving up and many, many sacrifices that even my kids are questioning. I cannot have a bad time. Or even a mediocre one. I would want to hear about more people doing costumes, better quality controls and kinks with datapads getting worked out (esp for us non-American visitors with non-American phones). And the booking policies push me to favor booking as late as possible, when absolutely all my ducks are in a row and I am confident we will be able to go. Even if that means I don’t get my first choice of dates. Better that than losing a couple thousand to a cancellation, or even just having a couple thousand dollars tied up in the deposit for months.

A lot of very fair points here. One thing that stands out to me as particularly mind boggling is how difficult this is to book. I understand Disney wanting to clearly explain what Starcruiser is and isn’t, but not everyone has the time to spend hours on the phone getting this sorted out. (This is a general problem that extends far beyond Starcruiser–and will eventually come back to bite Disney.)

As for your points about the Redditor’s trip report, that’s interesting to hear. One of our friends who works for TouringPlans recently went on a cruise and we were comparing notes…they’re different was far different (and worse IMO) than ours. He still liked it and was glad he did it, but it was shocking how much had already changed. He should have a report coming soon on TouringPlans, so stay tuned for that if you’re curious.

Maybe, just maybe, Disney will look at this now and realise how short sighted they have become post pandemic. It is only now and moving forward into the next few years that economically we are going to see the full impact of the pandemic. People who had saved their money by not going anywhere for two years and have now splurged all that on a Disney holiday are going to realise that with rising petrol and food costs, increased mortgage rates and higher cost of living demands that a Disney holiday is no longer achievable. Stack the coffers now Disney because in a couple of years time you are going to see a massive downward trend in visitors, just sayin and one of the first to go will be this insanely expensive experience. Shame they didn’t make it more accessible for us plebs.

Formal Night Aboard Disney Cruise Line: What You Need To Know

by Kelly Coffey-Behrens | Apr 11, 2023 | Disney Cruise Line

2 night disney cruise

We’re breaking down everything you need to know about formal nights sailing aboard the Disney Cruise Line.

Are you ready to set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line? We understand cruises can take a lot of planning – especially if it is your first time sailing, so we are here to help you prep before you set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line.  When sailing on Disney Cruise Line, most onboard dining locations are “cruise casual,” meaning that casual attire, such as shorts and T-shirts, are permitted. However, there is one exception, as swimwear and tank tops are not allowed.  Additionally, most Disney Cruise Line sailings have special theme nights that provide opportunities for couples and families to dress up for one-of-a-kind photos and a special night out. Only certain cruises offer what is known as “formal” or “semi-formal” night, and we’re sharing your complete guide to these formal nights on the Disney Cruise Line.

What is a Disney Cruise Formal Night?

Castaway Club Pearl Tier Palo Dinner

If you are sailing on a 3- or 4-night cruise, you will not have a dedicated “formal” night. However, you are still welcome to dress up on one of your nights for dinner (three and four-day cruises have what Disney calls an optional dress-up night, though note that this is different than the dedicated “formal” and “semi-formal” evenings.).

If you are on a 7-night Disney Cruise , you will have a dedicated formal and a semi-formal night. What this means is guests can dress to the nines and take advantage of special photo opportunities during this special-themed night.  Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and the rest of the Disney Characters will all be dressed in evening gowns and tuxedos, making meeting them a particularly special opportunity. Additionally, Disney Cruise Line photographers will be out and about in the atrium, with special backdrops just for these nights.

Plus, on formal nights only, Cast Members will walk around with trays of complimentary drinks. I’m talking glasses of wine, margaritas, and other special cocktails all for free!

When Do Formal Nights Take Place?

Once onboard, guests will be able to find out which day(s) the formal and semi-formal nights will take place. Onboard, you can open up your Disney Cruise Line Navigation app and take a look at your weekly plans. Here, you will see exactly which night formal night is, as well as which night is dedicated to Pirate Night and semi-formal night.

What To Wear On a Disney Cruise Formal Night

Disney Fantasy Disney Cruise Line

Although Disney Cruise Line offers a formal night, dressing up is not required. If you do want to participate, ladies, I recommend wearing whatever you are comfortable in. I have seen some women dress in sequined gowns, while others wore what looked to be prom dresses. Not everyone dresses to the nines on formal night, though, so if you are more comfortable in a pair of nice shoes and a pantsuit, wear that!

For the gentlemen, if you want to wear a full tuxedo, own it! But if you just want to wear a pair of nice khaki pants and a polo shirt, that is totally acceptable too. Bottom line – don’t break the bank just to participate in a formal night. Look through your closet and wear whatever you already have on hand and whatever you are comfortable in.

My family chose 2 nights on Disney's Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser for $6,000 over a 7-night cruise. Here's why we have no regrets.

  • We're Disney Cruise Line regulars and have voyaged on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser twice.
  • The two-night Star Wars voyage is similar in price to some Disney cruises, but it holds up.
  • There's nothing like the interactiveness of the Galactic Starcruiser, and we have no regrets.

When planning an upcoming family trip, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser was high on our list.

2 night disney cruise

Last February, my family walked blindly into Disney World's Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser — often dubbed "the Star Wars hotel" — and 45 hours later, we left hooked.

A second voyage a year later was somehow even better and again left us eyeing yet another trip to a galaxy far, far away.

At a starting price of $6,000 for four, shelling out the credits for the two-night voyage is a big decision (notably, 30% discounts on select voyages have recently been offered to annual passholders , Disney Visa cardholders, and Disney Vacation Club members).

Having already experienced Galactic Starcruiser as invited media, we knew it would deliver, but still weighed our options when planning our next family vacation.

We picked two nights at the Galactic Starcruiser over a seven-night Disney cruise, which can be about the same price.

2 night disney cruise

We love Starcruiser, but we're also Disney Cruise Line superfans. Our final decision came down to two nights at the Starcruiser or a Disney cruise.

The cost of the two-night Starcruiser voyage can be similar to longer Disney cruises , but we think the Star Wars experience holds up against a seven-night cruise.

As much as we've loved the Star Wars offerings on Disney Cruise Line ships, my family wanted to scratch the Starcruiser itch with another voyage.

Here's why we love it and have no regrets about our choice.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a "space voyage," but the immersive experience is completely different from a regular cruise.

2 night disney cruise

Starcruiser takes what we love about Disney cruising — attentive service, top-notch entertainment, great food — and gives it the Star Wars treatment.

But the Halcyon isn't just an intergalactic substitute for a cruise ship, it's also a stage where an epic Resistance vs. First Order story plays out for two days, and you get to be a main character.

From the moment you arrive, the experience feels like it's part cruise and part Disney ride.

The adventure begins at the departure terminal where you drop your luggage and board a launch pod that "transports" you to the Halcyon by mimicking a gentle ride into space.

Soon, the doors whoosh open to reveal the Halcyon's sparkling atrium.

The cabins are a Star Wars fan's dream come true.

2 night disney cruise

After boarding, you're escorted to your cabin where your luggage is somehow already inside — one of many moments that make Halcyon passengers feel like VIPs.

Faux windows into space display vistas of nearby planets and a vidscreen (television) shows a map of your ship's route.

The bunk beds are our favorite part of the cabins.

2 night disney cruise

The bunk beds are bright-orange nooks that look straight out of a Star Wars movie. My kids love them, and the beds are also big enough for full-size adults.

Phones are used as a key story tool.

2 night disney cruise

Your Datapad — a smart device with the Play Disney Parks app — displays your itinerary, detailing scheduled and optional events, from lightsaber and bridge training to sabacc, a game that's kind of a blend of poker and blackjack.

The Datapad is also a tool to advance your story. On it, you get messages from characters like Captain Riyola Keevan, cruise director Lenka Mok, and First Order Lt. Croy. How you respond and whom you help shape your path.

The Datapad helps move your story forward, but it's the performers who draw you in and make you a part of it.

2 night disney cruise

Muster in the atrium kicks off the action. This is where you meet and get your first chance to interact with the main characters.

You might be greeted by the Captain, interrogated by stormtroopers or beeped at by resident astromech SK-620. My youngest son and I were so captivated by Lt. Croy on our first voyage that we immediately let him know we were on his side again the second time.

Ultimately, our family was divided between the Resistance and the First Order on our most recent trip.

My older son stayed close to the Resistance-leaning characters while keeping a watchful eye on his brother and me — "the enemies." We loved sneaking around and attending covert meetings around the ship.

Some of our favorite experiences are bridge training and lightsaber training.

2 night disney cruise

Voyaging on the Halcyon gives Star Wars fans countless bucket-list moments. Two of our favorites are bridge and lightsaber training.

Lightsaber training lets you wield a lightsaber and face off against a training remote. In bridge training, you learn about the ship's functions and how to control it. You also pick up a few offensive and defensive skills that could come in handy.

All of the meals are included in the stay — and we've been impressed by the options.

2 night disney cruise

Breakfasts and lunches are served buffet-style in the Crown of Corellia dining room.

The voyage also includes bottomless soft drinks like soda, juice, coffee, tea, and even the plant-based blue "milk" and green "milk." A frozen version of the blue and green milk is sold in  Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge  for about $8 a cup.

The dishes look a bit wild, but you don't have to be adventurous to enjoy them.

2 night disney cruise

Many of the foods look otherworldly , but some are just inventive takes on familiar favorites.

We love the Fire-Melted Cheese Takeaway with Red Fruit Soup Dipper, a bubble-bread grilled cheese and tomato soup, and the sunflower butter and jelly, a pillowy green pod that's really just a delicious, nut-free PB&J.

There are plenty of elevated, more adventurous options too, like Chandrilan Salad (made with mushrooms, kale, olives, squash and white berry vinegar) and Sorgan's Stew (made with crawfish tails, rice and yellow-seed stick).

The first dinner is An Evening with Gaya.

2 night disney cruise

On night one, galactic singer Gaya performs a catchy musical set, accompanied by Rodian backup musician Ouannii. We loved her music.

Most of my family loved the dinner food, but there are also options for less adventurous eaters.

2 night disney cruise

While the rest of us dug into dishes like colorful Spiral Dumplings with "interplanetary dipping sauces" and Flora Noodle Salad, our server brought my pickier son steamed green beans and waffle fries.

Basics like chicken nuggets and pizza are also available to order.

Dinner on the second night is a Taste Around the Galaxy.

2 night disney cruise

On night two, courses are inspired by different planets, from Mustafar to Kashyyyk.

The most talked-about dish of the voyage is from the jungle planet of Felucia. Felucian shrimp cocktail is bright blue and served encircled in a billowing fog of dry ice.

We love hanging out in the Sublight Lounge.

2 night disney cruise

There's not much downtime when you're as invested in the story as we were, but for a break we kick back in the Sublight Lounge, the cocktail bar just off the atrium.

We played sabacc and sipped themed drinks like the Mandalore Sling, Pod Chaser, or bright-blue Toniray wine (my favorite). Alcoholic and specialty zero-proof cocktails are sold at an additional charge.

The Galactic Starcruiser stay includes a VIP visit to Disney's Galaxy's Edge.

2 night disney cruise

Even if you've been to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios before, the port excursion to Batuu as a Halcyon passenger is a unique — and exclusive — experience.

Transport shuttles brings guests from the Halcyon to a themed back entrance straight into Galaxy's Edge.

The Starcruiser stay comes with Lightning Lane access, which allows you to skip the lines on popular rides Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

The Halcyon crew is there to help too, handing out bottled water and phone chargers as needed. They can also hold onto your packages if you shop at the park or build a lightsaber or droid.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser defies comparisons to any other vacation — and it's definitely not a one-and-done.

2 night disney cruise

Even though our itineraries looked the same on our first two voyages, our experiences were each totally unique. Performers expertly improvise, bringing a personalization to every interaction that ensures it's all but impossible to duplicate the experience.

On both trips, by the end of the second night, we felt the sense of belonging that comes with being a part of something really special. It stayed with us long after we got home.

Months after our first voyage, my son asked for a Starcruiser birthday and Lt. Croy cake. He named his favorite plush after the Halcyon and even started his own Starcruiser fund with his piggy bank.

There's a reason Galactic Starcruiser has spawned superfan groups of former passengers longing to connect with others who share their love of this place and the masterful performers that bring it to life.

There's simply nothing else like it — and we can't wait to go back.

How much does a Disney cruise really cost?

Megan duBois

Editor's Note

Disney Cruise Line is known for its family-friendly cruises complete with all of your favorite Disney characters, impeccable dining, exciting entertainment and thrilling ports of call. With everything that's included on the sailings, you might be wondering how much a Disney cruise costs — and if you can afford one.

Cruises with Mickey Mouse and his pals range in price depending on many factors such as the embarkation port and destination, departure date, length of the cruise and cabin type you book. No matter which cruise you book, it will be pricey, like any Disney vacation. You'll have to determine what value you put on experiencing the "magic" of Disney.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

To me, it's worth a lot. I've experienced all five ships in the Disney fleet and have sailed seven times to destinations around the Caribbean and the Mediterranean .

Here, I'm sharing how much a Disney cruise costs per ship and itinerary, any extras that are worth the additional fees and how to save money on a Disney cruise.

How much does it cost to go on a Disney cruise?

2 night disney cruise

Let's be honest: A cruise on any Disney ship isn't cheap. Factors like cabin type and category, sail date, destination, length of cruise, traveling party size and if you're on a themed cruise can impact the overall cost. If you're trying to keep your costs lower, your best option is to pick a cruise on an older ship (Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy) or pick a shorter cruise length.

The cheapest Disney cruise we found cost $1,000 for an inside cabin for two people on a two-night sailing on Disney Wonder in Australia. That's $250 per person per night.

If you're looking for a cheap Caribbean or Bahamian sailing, consider a three-night Bahamas cruise on Disney Magic starting at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people. This also equates to $250 per person per day. Add in drinks, specialty dining, souvenirs and other expenses, and you can expect to spend around $2,500 in total.

On a recent sailing on the Disney Dream , my family of three and I spent five nights at sea in a balcony room and paid a grand total of $4,514.06. This total included everything from the cruise fare and pre-night hotel stay to parking and spa services.

Some examples of starting prices for each ship and its major itineraries for an inside cabin or a balcony cabin are listed below so you can get a sense of pricing across the fleet. Prices are based on double occupancy.

Disney Magic

One- to three-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,500 to $2,500; balcony cabins, $1,900 to $3,300 Four-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,800 to $3,200; balcony cabins, $2,300 to $4,000 Five- to six-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,200 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,000 to $6,600 Seven-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $2,700 to $3,300; balcony cabins, $3,800 to $4,900

Disney Wonder

Two- to three-night Australia: inside cabins, $1,000 to $2,100; balcony cabins, $1,200 to $2,800 Four-night Australia: inside cabins, $1,700 to $3,000; balcony cabins, $2,200 to $4,000 Seven-night Alaska: inside cabins, $3,300 to $5,000; balcony cabins, $5,900 to $10,500

Disney Dream

Three-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,700 to $2,300; balcony cabins, $2,000 to $2,600 Four-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,100 to $3,500; balcony cabins, $2,500 to $4,000 Five-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $2,800 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,100 to $5,000 Five-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,700 to $4,000; balcony cabins, $3,200 to $4,600 Seven-night Europe and Mediterranean: inside cabins $4,400 to $6,800; balcony cabins, $5,200 to $9,500

Where do Disney cruises sail from?

2 night disney cruise

Disney Cruises depart from 15 different ports around the world, but the major ones to think about from the U.S. include:

  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Port Canaveral, Florida
  • Galveston, Texas
  • New Orleans

The major international ports Disney Cruise Line sets sail from include:

  • Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Southampton, England
  • Brisbane, Australia
  • Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada

Depending on the cruise you pick, getting to and from the home port can be easy or take a little longer — and that can impact the total cost of your Disney cruise.

For instance, many people drive to Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral if they already live in the southern U.S. Driving can save money versus flying, and you might not have to stay in a pre-cruise hotel if you can drive right to the port.

You will have to pay to park at the port or at a third-party parking lot. While the off-site parking lots are often cheaper, you will need to think about how to get to and from the ship, tipping the porter or driver, plus the added time to get from your car to the ship.

On the other hand, if you are taking a cruise from an international destination or flying to a domestic home port, your costs automatically go up because of flights for your family, a pre-cruise hotel, meals before the sailing, and transportation to the ship and back to the airport.

What's included in the price of a Disney cruise?

2 night disney cruise

You might pay a lot for a Disney cruise, but you get a lot for your money. The cost of a Disney cruise covers your onboard dining and most nonalcoholic drinks, an abundance of entertainment for kids and adults, onboard activities and transportation between cruise ports. Even most entertainment and food on Disney's private island Castaway Cay (and upcoming private island destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point) is part of the fare.

Entertainment

Most of the entertainment on board is included in the overall cost of your sailing. On your cruise, you can experience Broadway-quality shows inside the Walt Disney Theater, watch first-run movies from Disney's production companies (like Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars), listen to live music and participate in game shows in the adults-only lounges. Most itineraries feature a deck party with a fireworks show.

Kids can meet and play with their favorite Disney characters and participate in activities like karaoke. Family-friendly sun decks with pools, waterslides, splash zones and wading pools are also included in the cost.

2 night disney cruise

Disney Cruise Line is known for its rotational dining evening dinner service. Families rotate through three onboard restaurants throughout the sailing, and your service team moves with you. Each of the rotational dining options is included in your cruise fare. One of the restaurants will be open for drop-in, sit-down meals during breakfast and lunch as well. Complimentary room service is available 24 hours a day.

On the upper decks, quick-service food stations, soft-serve ice cream and a buffet are available. Every Disney cruise also includes unlimited coffee, tea and soda.

Accommodations

Almost every cabin across the Disney fleet features Disney's distinctive split bathroom concept. One of the bathrooms has a vanity, sink and tub-shower, plus another bathroom with a vanity, sink and toilet. Each room also has a small refrigerator, safe and hair dryer.

2 night disney cruise

Every child ages 3 to 17 will have access to Disney's kids clubs on board. Youngsters ages 3-10 can enjoy Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab . Tweens ages 11-14 have access to Edge, and teens ages 14-17 can chill out in Vibe.

Each kids club has dedicated counselors and a host of activities every day. The best way to see the list of activities is to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and scroll through the daily agenda. You can flag activities your kids want to attend, so you can get to the kids clubs before they start.

Adult-exclusive activities

Disney cruises are packed with family-friendly programming, but adults can find spaces and events geared just for them in the adult-only nightclubs and lounges on board. Live music, interactive games and shows are only some of the nightly activities.

Additionally, adults have a dedicated pool and hot tub area that includes a bar and coffee shop. (Drinks cost extra, but access is free). For those looking to stay fit while onboard, access to the fitness center is also included.

Castaway Cay

2 night disney cruise

On most Bahamas and Caribbean sailings, you'll stop at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . At the island, your family can enjoy the family beach or adult-exclusive beach (for those 18 and older).

Use of towels, beach chairs and shade umbrellas are complimentary, as are waterslides and splash zones. Live music and character appearances take place around the island. Kids and teen club activities are available on Castaway Cay — again, at no extra charge. Runners can participate in the Castaway Cay 5K and get a finisher medal.

When it's time to eat, three spots serve an included barbecue lunch, complete with soft-serve ice cream. Coffee, tea and fountain drinks are also included at Castaway Cay.

To get around the island, you can walk or use the complimentary trams.

Are there any extra Disney costs?

Even though many activities, dining options and entertainment are included in the cost of your cruise, you will find things to pay extra for on a Disney cruise. These may or may not be worth it for your family, depending on your budget and interests. Below is a list of things not included in your overall cruise fare.

Some of the cutest Disney activities are also ones that cost extra. Kids who want more time with the Disney characters might be interested in the Royal Court Royal Tea — a tea party with characters for kids ages 3 to 12. According to planDisney (Disney's online resource for vacation-planning tips) , the cost is $220 per child and $69 for anyone 13 and up. Each tea party includes a selection of tea and a two-course meal; every child gets an assortment of gifts.

Kids can also play dress-up and get a full regal or pirate (only available on Pirate Party Nights) makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, found on every Disney ship. Depending on the package you booked for your child, expect to pay $100 to $450 for each makeover.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy both have a virtual sports simulator that requires a reservation and a fee. You can play various sports, from football to golf, for either 30- or 60-minute time blocks. Cost varies based on time, sport and number of people playing.

Specialty dining and cocktails

2 night disney cruise

Four specialty dining restaurants are offered across the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Exclusive to Disney Wish (and coming soon to Disney Treasure ) are Enchante and Palo Steakhouse. Expect to pay $60 to $205 plus an 18% auto-gratuity for a meal at Enchante; Palo Steakhouse is $50 for a prix-fixe meal, but an a la carte menu is also available.

On the four other Disney Cruise Line ships, Palo is also $50 for prix-fixe and offers an a la carte menu. An 18% auto-gratuity is also tacked onto your bill.

On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, Remy is also available, with the dessert experience starting at $65 without the 18% auto-gratuity, while brunch and dinner are $80 and $135 respectively, plus an additional 18% auto-gratuity.

On all ships, themed bars and lounges sling drinks. Because there's no drink package available through Disney Cruise Line, you will have to pay for each drink individually. The planDisney panel says the average drink can range from $6 to $20.

If you're looking for specialty coffee, tea or hot chocolate drinks, look for the Cove Cafe on all ships; there are also specialty counters off of the atrium on Disney Dream, Fantasy and Wish. These drinks cost anywhere from $5 to $8, depending on your order. You can also order alcoholic drinks from the coffee bars, which run the typical cocktail prices.

Outside the Walt Disney Theater or near the movie theaters on board each ship, you'll also smell the buttery goodness of freshly popped popcorn. You can buy the popcorn for an added fee to take into the shows with you. Additionally, there are some specialty popcorn buckets available for purchase on each ship; you can refill them for a discounted price every time you want to munch on the salty snack. (Specialty buckets purchased off the ships at a Disney resort or theme park are not eligible for a discounted popcorn refill.)

Additionally, each ship offers beverage-tasting seminars where you can learn how to make and taste a variety of cocktails in a given category. Seminars can range from $40 to $70 and last about an hour.

While crew gratuities on Disney Cruise Line are not included in the overall cost, some can be prepaid before you step onboard. These include gratuities to your dining room server, assistant server and head server, plus your cabin host. Disney recommends a gratuity of $14.50 per night per person, including infants and children in regular cabins. It's recommended that those in concierge cabins and suites pay $15.50, with the extra going to your cabin assistant host.

Gratuities that are not included can be paid on board. Such gratuities include anything extra you would like to give to your service team, tips on alcoholic beverages in the dining room, adult dining locations, room service and the spa. The concierge lounge team is also not included in prepaid gratuities for concierge guests, and Disney recommends $8 per night per guest.

Keep in mind that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs across the ship and for spa services. To make it easy while on the ship, you can charge all your gratuities to your onboard account.

2 night disney cruise

If you want to bring something home from your trip — whether from a port of call or from the onboard shops — you'll want to budget for that extra cost. Souvenirs off the ship can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on what you buy. Be prepared that some shops will only take local currency; purchases at Castaway Cay shops will be charged to your onboard account.

On the ship, easy-to-transport souvenirs included trading pins, magnets and apparel. These can range anywhere from $20 to $75. Other more expensive onboard souvenirs include jewelry, luxury brand purses and wallets, and art.

How do I save money on a Disney cruise?

2 night disney cruise

If you're reeling from sticker shock, know you can find many ways to save money on a Disney cruise. Here are a few of my favorite money-saving tips.

Letting Disney choose your cabin can be a great way to get a deal on the cruise. These are known as guaranteed rates, and they are the cheapest fares in each category. All you have to do is pick your room type, such as inside, ocean view or balcony, and Disney picks which specific room number you get. This works best if you don't care where your room is on the ship.

If you're looking for a room upgrade , but that's not a make-it-or-break-it deal for your family, consider waiting to upgrade your room until you get to the port. If your cruise still has rooms available, you can ask at check-in about a room upgrade for a discount. The cost will be relative to the room type you originally booked and the room type you want to upgrade to. Sometimes, you can even upgrade to a concierge room or a suite, but you will need to get an early port arrival time to potentially score one of those upgrades.

Disney Cruise Line has one of the most generous alcohol policies of any big-ship cruise brand. At the start of your cruise, you can bring up to six cans of beer or two bottles of wine per person over 21 years old. Then, at each port, you can restock and bring the same alcohol allotment per person over 21 onto the ship to store in your room and enjoy. You might find that beer and wine are cheaper in port than on board — a smart way to save on your drinking expenses.

Are Disney cruises cheaper or more expensive than other cruise lines?

2 night disney cruise

Other family-friendly cruise brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. While all of the family-friendly brands have pros and cons, picking the right one for your family can come down to a matter of cost. Disney is almost always the most expensive.

For example, we priced out a three-night weekend cruise departing on the same dates for Disney Wish and Royal Caribbean 's soon-to-debut Utopia of the Seas. We found that Disney was almost $500 more expensive for the same weekend, cabin type and length of sailing. Utopia of the Seas came out to $2,850.10 for two people staying in a balcony cabin, while the Disney Wish cruise, also in a balcony room, cost $3,337.20.

What Disney does best — and why many people choose to cruise with the brand — is it provides a high level of service to families, even those in the least expensive cabins. The crew on Disney ships goes above and beyond to make your vacation easy. I've seen everything from dining staff cutting kids' food and taking children to the bathroom to room hosts ensuring parents know about the parental locks on balcony doors (so kids can't just wander outside without an adult).

The extra amenities that Disney offers — such as Broadway-quality shows, character experiences and larger standard cabins — all bring the overall cruise cost up.

Disney also has a smaller fleet than all its family-friendly competitors, meaning there is less cabin inventory to sell. Plus, its ships generally carry fewer passengers. For example, Disney Wish, Disney's biggest ship, carries 4,000 people at full capacity; Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas can carry 7,600 guests at capacity. The low inventory combined with the high demand for Disney cruises means that Disney can charge higher fares and still fill ships.

Bottom line

Cruise fares with Disney can change based on factors like room type, travel party size and sailing date. The minimum price you can expect to pay for a cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas starts at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people on Disney Magic.

Disney Cruise Line includes a variety of dining experiences (including room service), soda, character meet-and-greets and Broadway-caliber entertainment in its fares; it also allows passengers to bring alcohol on board in every port of call. For these reasons, you don't necessarily have to spend much on board to have a fantastic vacation. The cruise can be a good value depending on the extras you choose to add.

The real question is whether you want to spend more on the base cruise fare to immerse yourself in the world of Disney versus paying less for another family-friendly cruise line.

CDC approves Disney Cruise Line for 2-night test sailing on Disney Dream in June

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – After a catastrophic coronavirus cruise season , Disney Cruise Line will finally set sail this month, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the cruise line's request to conduct a two-night simulation cruise on June 29 on the Disney Dream departing from Port Canaveral.

The federal government is getting ready to let cruises sail again , but only if nearly all passengers and crew are vaccinated against the virus. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, however, signed a bill banning business from requiring proof of vaccination , so cruise lines must prove the effectiveness of their COVID-19 safety protocols on test cruises .

Disney Cruise Line reopening on horizon

“We have reached an important next step toward our gradual and responsible resumption of service, and are grateful for the productive dialogue with state, local and federal officials," Disney Cruise Line spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said in an email.

Miami-based Norwegian has threatened to abandon its three Florida ports and move to the Caribbean over DeSantis' order. But the governor was unyielding, saying there were plenty of other cruise lines eager to take its place.

Norwegian is the third-largest cruise line in the world and has ports in Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa. It also makes stops in Key West.

DeSantis is suing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the no-sail order. The CDC is set to let cruises sail again if 98% of the crew and 95% of passengers are vaccinated and ships take other measures to limit the risk of transmitting the virus.

The Dream will be based at Fort Lauderdale, primarily alternating three and four night Bahamian sailings, with a few five night sailings in the mix.

The Fantasy will undergo a dry dock in fall 2025, followed by a return to Port Canaveral where she will sail four and five night Bahamian trips from Port Canaveral.

Disney Cruise Line to homeport in Asia for the first time in 2025

S ailing from Singapore in 2025, the one-of-a-kind Disney Adventure will offer families throughout the region the ultimate holiday at sea. The first Disney Cruise Line ship to homeport in Asia will be a destination itself, sailing on three- and four-night voyages designed with magical days at sea and filled with immersive storytelling and captivating entertainment like only Disney can do.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," said Sharon Siskie, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Disney Cruise Line. "When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before — and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

New areas to discover aboard

The Disney Adventure will be both a journey and a destination, a voyage of limitless possibilities that brings to vibrant life the core pillars of Disney storytelling.

Through the magic of imagination, discovery, fantasy and, of course, adventure, guests will embark on voyages to seven uniquely-themed areas, each teeming with dozens of incredible characters and unforgettable experiences, without ever leaving the ship.

Disney Imagination Garden will be the emotional heart of the Disney Adventure, an enchanted valley, charming garden and open-air performance venue all in one.

Inspired by 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney adventures — from Moana on the high seas to Mowgli in the jungle — this imaginative gathering space will be guests' gateway to an unforgettable journey all their own.

At Disney Discovery Reef, families will shop and dine in an ethereal and ever-changing retreat evoking favorite aquatic characters and nautical stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, including "The Little Mermaid," "Lilo & Stitch," "Finding Nemo" and "Luca."

Inspired by the eclectic world of Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Big Hero 6," San Fransokyo Street will be a family entertainment area pulsing with the energy and atmosphere of a vibrant street market and boasting an assortment of interactive games and activities, shops, cinemas and more.

At Wayfinder Bay, guests will be called by "the line where the sky meets the sea" to an open-air oasis under the sun, where relaxation and exclusive entertainment await. The sophisticated yet casual poolside retreat will reflect the Pacific Islands-inspired artistry of Disney Animation's "Moana," offering some of the most stunning views of the sea and sky aboard the Disney Adventure.

Meanwhile, Town Square will be a celebration of Disney royals — a magical land dedicated to those who wish upon a star hoping their dreams will come true. This fantastical forest filled with shops, lounges, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues will exude the enchanting feeling of summer in full bloom with nods to "Tangled," "Cinderella," "Frozen," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Princess and the Frog," and more.

At Marvel Landing, heroes will unite in a destination for fans of all ages. As a celebration of Marvel's larger-than-life personalities, this area will offer Avengers-level adventure, with all-new attractions and experiences that showcase imaginative representations of guests' favorite Super Heroes.

Finally, Toy Story Place will inspire guests to explore, create, connect and have fun in a whimsical, interactive play land with themed food venues and water play areas, where the world of Pixar's "Toy Story" movies and shorts springs to life in surprising and inventive ways.

Where magic meets the sea

The Disney Adventure will offer guests a Disney Cruise Line holiday on a grand scale, including the hallmarks of every Disney cruise — fun and relaxation for everyone onboard, incredible dining, world-class entertainment and exceptional guest service.

Every sailing will include an endless array of indoor and outdoor fun, with exciting attractions, interactive play areas, fun in the sun and special entertainment, plus so much more for families to enjoy together. Young cruisers will have the time of their lives with dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences.

A highlight of every Disney cruise holiday is the world-class entertainment that brings the ship to life. Throughout the Disney Adventure, guests will enjoy unforgettable character encounters, dazzling stage shows brimming with Disney songs and characters, signature events, first-run films, karaoke and game shows.

Guests aboard the Disney Adventure will also enjoy the exceptional dining and impeccable service that Disney Cruise Line is known for. Guests will indulge in a collection of imaginative restaurants where dinner is more than a meal — it's a chance to feast on favorite Disney stories through immersive theming and distinctly Disney entertainment. Guests will be accompanied by the same dedicated service team throughout the voyage, adding a level of familiarity and attention to their dining experience.

When it's time to rest, guests will retreat to well-appointed staterooms complete with special Disney touches and family-friendly conveniences, such as Disney Cruise Line's signature split-bath concept, which allows two people to get ready at once.

Disney Cruise Line estimates the passenger capacity of the 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure to be approximately 6,700 with around 2,500 crew members.

Disney announces where its cruise ships will be sailing during late-2025, early-2026

2 night disney cruise

Disney Cruise Line is preparing to debut its new cruise ship, the Treasure, at Port Canaveral later this year.

But it also is planning ahead as far as 2026, with the cruise line's latest announcement of ship schedules out of Port Canaveral and other ports.

Disney's just-released ship schedules for October 2025 through May 2026 ― Disney's winter and spring cruise seasons ― shows that the cruise line will have three ships based on Port Canaveral during that time.

Disney currently bases two ships at Port Canaveral — the Fantasy and the Wish. But it will have three, starting when the Treasure starts sailing in December.

Where Disney ships are headed

What you'll discover on Disney Treasure: Here's a lineup of some restaurants, entertainment and lodging on Disney's Treasure ship

Here are the newly announced plans and itineraries for Disney ships that will be based at Port Canaveral:

  • The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic will have four- and five-night sailings from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas in October 2025, before switching home ports to San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the end of October, then to Galveston, Texas, in November 2025.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will sail out of Port Canaveral on three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas starting in November 2025, replacing the Magic on the port's schedule. Before coming to Port Canaveral, the Fantasy will offer a special 13-night trans-Atlantic cruise sailing leaving Oct. 20, 2024, from Southampton, England, to Port Canaveral, with two port-of-call stops in Spain and one in Portugal.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure will offer seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Wish will offer three- and four-night cruises to the Bahama from Port Canaveral.

All the cruises out of Port Canaveral will include a port-of-call stop at one or both of Disney's private islands in the Bahamas — Castaway Cay and the new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which had its first port-of-call visits this month.

"That's a lot of options out of Port Canaveral," said Scott Sanders, owner of the Celebration-based Disney Cruise Line Blog , which is not affiliated with Disney itself.

The Fantasy and the Magic will be switching places at Port Canaveral. The Fantasy currently is based at Port Canaveral, but will leave in May 2025, replaced by the Magic, before the Fantasy returns in November 2025.

The addition of a third Disney ship at Port Canaveral at the end of this year means Disney will be using two cruise terminals there, rather than one. Currently, when they are in port, Disney ships dock at Cruise Terminal 8, a terminal primarily used by Disney. But the third home-ported ship will result in Disney also using Cruise Terminal 10, which now currently is used primarily by MSC and Norwegian.

This is where Disney's two other ships will be during the fall 2025 to spring 2026 time frame:

  • The 2,713-passenger Disney Wonder will have multiple home ports, including Vancouver, British Columbia; Honolulu; Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and San Diego.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream will sail out of Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades with three-, four- and five-night sailings to the Bahamas, as well as five-night sailings to the Western Caribbean.

Disney will offer themed holiday sailings on some of it 2025 cruises, with Halloween on the High Seas cruises in September and October, then Very Merrytime sailings in November and December.

Bookings for the general public will open Friday for the winter 2024 through spring 2025 Disney cruises. Bookings for members of various Disney Cruise Line clubs open earlier this week.

Sanders said it is unusual for Disney to announce cruise ship schedules for two seasons at once. But he believes that is related to Disney planning a special announcement with the next few months about itineraries for two other Disney ships now under construction that will joining the fleet in 2025 ― the Disney Adventure and the Disney Destiny.

The 6,000-passenger Adventure will sail out of Singapore. Disney acquire that ship — partially built and then known as the Global Dream — from another cruise company. No home port has been announced for the 4,000-passenger Destiny.
