Horn Location

  • Add to quote

Hi guys! I'm currently troubleshooting the horn on my 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan. So far I've used a test light to eliminate the IPM and FCM as failure points, and I'm trying to move further down the line and test the wire to the horn itself, only I can't seem to find much information on where exactly the horn is located. It is being described as "behind the front fascia and forward of the front left wheel," but I'm still having trouble locating it. Can someone post a picture of where the horn would be located on a 2001-2007 Dodge Grand Caravan or equivalent? Thanks!

Can't give you a picture, but they (there are two horns) are mounted in the cavity forward of the front drivers wheel tub, between it and the front lower bumper fascia. You have to remove the front splash shield for the easiest access. Which means jacking it up and pulling the wheel.. :eekkkk: DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING HORN (1) Disconnect wire connector at horn. (2) Using a voltmeter, connect one lead to ground terminal and the other lead to the positive wire terminal. (3) Depress the horn switch, battery voltage should be present. (4) If no voltage, refer to HORNS WILL NOT SOUND. If voltage is OK, go to step Step 5. (5) Using ohmmeter, test ground wire for continuity to ground. (6) If no ground repair as necessary. (7) If wires test OK and horn does not sound, replace horn. HORNS WILL NOT SOUND Check horn fuse # 8 in the intelligent power module. If fuse is blown, check for a shorted switch in the airbag module. and refer to FUSE BLOWN section. If fuse is OK, refer to FUSE OK section. FUSE BLOWN (1) Verify condition of battery terminals and voltage, (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/BATTERY SYSTEM - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING). If battery connections and battery charge is OK proceed to Step 2. (2) Using a voltmeter, test for battery voltage at both sides of horn fuse 7. If voltage is OK, on both sides of fuse, proceed to Fuse OK. If voltage is OK, on one side of fuse, the fuse is blown, proceed to Step 3. (3) Using a suitable ammeter in place of the fuse, test amperage draw of the horn circuit. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps without the horn switch depressed, a grounded circuit exists between the fuse and the horn relay. Proceed to Step 4. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps with the horn switch depressed, a grounded circuit exists between the horn relay and the horn. Proceed to Step 5. (4) Remove the horn relay from the intelligent power module. If the amperage draw drops to 0 amps, the horn switch or circuit is shorted. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. If the amperage draw does not drop to 0 amps, repair short at the intelligent power module. (5) Disengage a wire connector from one of the horns. If amperage drops and the connected horn sounds, replace the faulty horn. If amperage does not drop with both horns disconnected and the horn switch depressed, proceed to Step 6. (6) Using a continuity tester, with the horns disconnected test continuity of the X2 cavity of the horn relay to ground. If continuity is detected, the circuit is grounded between the Junction Block and the horns. Locate and repair pinched harness. FUSE OK (1) Remove the horn relay from the intelligent power module. (2) Using a continuity tester, Depress horn switch and test continuity from the X3 cavity of the horn relay to ground. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. (a) If continuity is detected, proceed to Step 3. (b) If NO continuity, proceed to Step 4. (3) Using a suitable jumper wire, jump across the fuse F62 cavity and the X2 cavity of the horn relay in the Junction Block. (a) If the horn sounds, replace the horn relay. (b) If the horn does not sound, proceed to Step 4. (4) Remove airbag trim cover from steering wheel. Refer to ELECTRICAL, RESTRAINTS. (5) Test continuity across horn switch connectors with horn switch depressed. (a) If continuity is detected, repair open circuit between the relay and the horn switch. (b) If NO continuity, replace airbag trim cover. (6) Install horn relay into intelligent power module. (7) Disengage wire connectors from horns. (8) Using a voltmeter, with the horn switch depressed test voltage across horn connector terminals of the wire harness. (a) If voltage is detected, replace horns. (b) If NO voltage, proceed to step Step 9. (9) With the horn switch depressed, test for voltage between the X2 circuit and ground. (a) If voltage OK, repair system ground at right cowl area. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. (b) If NO voltage, repair open X2 circuit between the relay and the horns. REMOVAL (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. (2) Hoist and support the front of the vehicle on safety stands (3) From behind the front fascia and forward of the left front wheel, disconnect the wire connectors from horn. (4) Remove the mounting bracket attaching nut from the bottom of radiator closure panel. Do not remove the horn from mounting bracket. (5) Separate the horn(s) from vehicle. HORN RELAY DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING (1) Remove horn relay. (2) Using ohmmeter, test between relay connector terminals 85 to 86 for 70 to 75 ohms resistance. If resistance not OK, replace relay. (3) Test for continuity between ground and terminal 85 of horn relay. (a) When the horn switch is not depressed, no continuity should be present. (b) Continuity to ground when horn switch is depressed. (c) If continuity is not correct repair horn switch or wiring as necessary, refer to the appropriate wiring information. (4) Using voltmeter, test voltage at: (a) Terminals 30 and 86 of the horn relay to body ground. (b) If NO voltage check fuse 8 of the intelligent power module. (c) If incorrect voltage, repair as necessary. (5) Insert a jumper wire between terminal 30 and 87 of the intelligent power module. (a) If horn sounds replace relay. (b) If the horn does not sound, install horn relay and refer to Horn Test.

Good news! I found the horn, and the connector with a piece of the horn still stuck in it from where a deer hit the vehicle before I bought it. I pried that out and it has both ground and power. My new problem, however, is that the bolt that holds the horn brackets to the frame seems to be rusted solid. It's a 15mm nut, and I've yanked on it as hard as I'm comfortable doing so with my ratchet. Even tried double wrenches for leverage, and it only started to strip the nut. Any suggestions for getting it loose, or even what to use to cut it off? I can get a new nut and bolt if necessary, I just want the old horn out of the way.

Marvel Mystry Oil, couple drops, leave it 30 minutes then try. always works for me.

Chrysler Grand Voyager horn not working – causes and how to fix it

The horn is an important safety feature in your Chrysler Grand Voyager. Driving your vehicle with a broken horn can be dangerous for you and others on the road. If the horn does not honk in your Grand Voyager when you press the button on the steering wheel, it can have various causes. What these are and what you can do about it, we explain in this article.

2000 chrysler voyager horn location

Some of the common causes that stops the horn from working normally on your Chrysler Grand Voyager are blown fuse, bad relay, faulty horn, corroded or worn out connector, broken wire, broken clock spring or bad horn button.

1. Blown fuse

The horn on Chrysler Grand Voyager needs electricity to work. In case of a faulty fuse, the circuit is interrupted and the horn can not work.

Check your Grand Voyager’s owners manual or the fuse box cover to find the exact location of the fuse for the horn. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one with the specified amp rating.

2000 chrysler voyager horn location

To check the fuse, pull it out of Grand Voyager’s fuse box using a fuse puller or needle nose plier and hold it against the light. If the metal strip is broken in the middle, the fuse has blown. You must replace it with one of the same amperage and therefore the same color. It does not matter in which direction you insert the fuse.

2. Bad relay

Relays are electromagnetic switches that are used to switch electrical loads on and off. A bad relay can also be the cause of horn failure on your Chrysler Grand Voyager.

2000 chrysler voyager horn location

First of all, you should find out where the horn relay is located in your particular model of Grand Voyager. The information may be listed in your vehicle’s owners manual. Typically relays are located in the engine compartment or under the steering wheel on the left-hand side. If you are lucky, the wiring diagram will be drawn on the facing. Before starting the replacement, you must always disconnect the vehicle’s battery.

As soon as you have identified the relay for the horn, you should check whether there is an identical relay in the box, typically you can use AC relay to test the horn relay. With this you can easily test whether the electromagnetic switch is actually the cause of the malfunctioning horn on your Grand Voyager. Most relays are plugged in, but they can still be relatively tight. Be careful not to damage anything when removing the relays. Remember: The battery should be reconnected after replacing the relay – otherwise no current will flow.

3. Bad horn

A broken horn could be the reason why you can no longer honk on your Chrysler Grand Voyager. Horns rarely break down, they can last decades and can even outlive the life of the vehicle. Still, it can fail depending on how often you use it. In particular, if the horn is working but sounds off, it’s because one of the horns has worn out.

You can test the horn on your Grand Voyager by checking the voltage at the connector or with a test light.

4. Broken wire or bad connector

The horn sits at the front of your Chrysler Grand Voyager where grime and other small particles can build up over time. This can lead to corrosion on the connector resulting in poor conductivity. You don’t necessarily have to replace the corroded connector, in most cases the connector can be cleaned with WD-40. For safety reasons, make sure the battery is disconnected when cleaning the connector, and the connector is fully dry before you plug it back in.

If you don’t see any corrosion on the connector of your Grand Voyager, then its time to perform the voltage test with a multimeter, or you can also use a test light. Turn on the multimeter and insert the probes into the connector, one at each point making sure the metal part of probes don’t touch each other – otherwise it will short out and blow up the fuse, and may cause damage to the vehicle’s electrical system. After inserting the probes, ask a friend to press the horn button in the vehicle. The multimeter should read 12+ volts, if it reads 0 volts then it indicates conductivity failure in the horn system: a broken wire, bad connector, broken clock spring or faulty switch can be the cause other than blown fuse or bad relay.

Rodent Damage: If bite marks or the like are discovered, there is a high probability that a rodent has let off steam in the engine compartment of your Grand Voyager. Then it is important to carefully examine all other cables and hoses for damage, including electrical wires for the horn.

5. Broken clockspring

The spiral cable or clockspring is a spiral-wound special rotary electrical connector in your Chrysler Grand Voyager which allows the steering wheel to turn while still making an electrical connection between the buttons on the steering wheel, including horn button, and the vehicle’s electrical systems. The clockspring is located between the steering wheel and the steering column. The clockspring contains delicate wires that can get damaged during servicing or due to overuse if the vehicle has put on too many miles.

If the clockspring is damaged in your Grand Voyager, you may see other system malfunctions as well. For example, the airbag warning light may illuminate in the instrument cluster, or other buttons on the steering wheel may stop working. But in rare cases, it is possible that only horn wire in the spiral gets damaged.

2000 chrysler voyager horn location

It is not feasible to repair a damaged clockspring. They are relatively inexpensive and once found defective should be replaced with a new one.

6. Faulty horn button switch

Another reason for non-functioning horn can be failure of horn button in the steering wheel of your Chrysler Grand Voyager. Over time, depending on how frequently the horn has been used, the button may eventually wear out and cease to function.

There are many reasons why the horn may not be working in your Chrysler Grand Voyager. When looking for the reason, you should always start with the most obvious cause, blown fuse or faulty relay.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop as you can easily do more damage to your vehicle, especially to the electrical system. An expert mechanic can diagnose the issue while you sip coffee in the waiting area.

fuses

This video shows how to replace blown fuses in the interior 2000 Chrysler Town and Country fuse box of your in addition to the fuse panel diagram location. Electrical components such as your map light, radio, heated seats, high beams, power windows, headlights, fan blower, defroster, door lock, power seat, windshield wiper motor, fuel pump, horn, anti-lock brakes and rear view camera all have fuses and if they suddenly stop working, chances are you have a fuse that has blown out. If your Town and Country is experiencing electrical problems, you should always check the fuses first, because they are relatively easy to check and cheap to change. Some Chryslers have multiple interior fuse boxes including in the trunk - the video will show you where the interior fuse box of your 2000 Town and Country is located. Next you need to consult the 2000 Chrysler Town and Country fuse box diagram to locate the blown fuse. If your Town and Country has many options like a sunroof, navigation, heated seats, etc, the more fuses it has. Some components may have multiple fuses, so make sure you check all of the fuses that are linked to the component in question.

If you need to replace a blown fuse in your Town and Country, make sure you replace it with one that has the same amperage as the blown fuse. If checking and replacing the fuse for the component in question doesn’t work, we recommend seeking assistance from a trusted professional mechanic. They should be able to figure out if the component needs to be replaced or if there is a short or some other problem with your Town and Country.
