Symptoms of a bad timing belt.

The timing belt, also known as a cam belt, is a toothed belt that connects the crankshaft and camshaft(s) of an engine. This is necessary to ensure these parts rotate in sync to maintain appropriate timing of the valves and pistons to keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently. Timing belts are typically made of rubber or a similar material and are reinforced with nylon cords. Though timing belts are typically durable and long-lasting, they will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. It's important to service a vehicle's timing belt and components at the manufacturer's recommended maintenance interval, which can vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle - typically between 60 and 100 thousand miles. When replacing a timing belt, it's also a good idea to replace any belt tensioners or pulleys that keep the belt at its proper timing and tension, and depending on the location of the timing components, replacing the water pump might also be recommended. Dodge Journey:  Bad Timing Belt or Chain Symptoms

A bad timing belt or timing chain can be a serious issue.  If it jumps a tooth or breaks entirely, it can lead to permanent engine damage.  Knowing the symptoms of a bad timing belt or chain is vital so this doesn’t happen to your Dodge Journey.

Timing belts are made out of rubber and nylon, unlike a timing chain, which looks much like a bicycle chain.  Here’s more on a timing chain vs. a timing belt . No matter which one your Journey has, the symptoms are the same when they fail.

Here are some of the most common warning signs of a bad timing belt on the Dodge Journey:

1. Engine Won’t Start

If your Journey’s timing chain or belt has fallen off completely, broken, or has jumped a few teeth , it is entirely possible that the engine won’t even start.  

You might hear it slapping around (broken timing belt or chain) as the engine cranks over.  If this is the case, the damage is already done.

2. Slapping Noise

A good indication that a timing belt has gone bad is going to be noise.  There may be a sound of rubber beating against something.  It’ll typically be a rough rattling sound, and it is often most noticeable right when you start up your Journey.

3. Performance Decrease

If the timing belt has jumped a few teeth, but hasn’t fallen or broken off yet, it can knock the engine out of time.  The timing belt is responsible for keeping the camshaft(s) in sync with the crankshaft.  

If the timing belt has shifted, it causes the valves to open and close improperly, leading to diminished performance.

4. Loss of Fuel Mileage

Fuel mileage will suffer when engine timing is off.  A misaligned timing belt will cause a decrease in fuel efficiency due to the engine working harder than it needs to be.

5. Glazing and Dry-rot (Timing Belt Only)

If you are looking at the Journey’s timing belt itself, check to see if the belt is glossy.  It should grip your finger as you lightly brush across it.  If it is slippery and dry, that is a great indication it could be bad as well.

Here are some other signs of a failing timing belt or chain:

• Metal shavings in the oil
• Ticking noise coming from the cylinder head area
• Low oil pressure
• Excessive vibration in the engine bay (Due to an engine misfire)

How to Diagnose and Fix

Check for Codes

If your Journey’s check engine light is on, start your diagnosis there. Modern engines use a crank and camshaft sensor to verify that they are spinning together.

If you pull P0016 (Crankshaft Coerlation) or P0017, that is a strong indication that the engine timing is off.

Replace the Timing Belt or Chain

Replacing a timing chain is not easy and requires considerable knowledge of the engine and its components. It is best done by a trained professional with access to specialized tools. 

Replacing your Dodge Journey’s timing chain can be expensive as it often involves several hours of labor from experienced mechanics.

Because the timing chain is essential to the engine’s operation, mistakes made during installation or adjustment can cause serious problems.

An incorrectly installed or adjusted timing chain can cause catastrophic damage , resulting in costly repairs and replacements that could have been avoided.

For these reasons, if you suspect your Journey’s timing chain needs replacement, contacting a certified professional who can safely perform the job is highly recommended.

Don’t Overlook the Tensioner

A timing belt tensioner maintains the correct tension on the Journey’s timing chain. This ensures your vehicle’s engine runs smoothly and the timing chain remains in place.

If the tensioner is not functioning correctly, it can cause damage to the engine since it will be unable to keep the timing chain properly secured.

Therefore, if you are having your timing chain replaced, make sure that the tensioner is checked and replaced if necessary. This will help to ensure that you don’t have any future problems with your vehicle.

The timing tensioner can also fail.  The tensioner’s job is to keep the right amount of pressure on your Dodge Journey’s timing belt or chain.  

As the belt/chain stretches through regular operation, it gets loose and falls off or jumps.  The tensioner keeps this from happening by maintaining consistent force on the belt.  So, as the belt stretches, it adjusts for this stretching.  

If the tensioner is no longer keeping enough pressure on the timing belt, it’ll cause it to fail.

If you are going to replace your TacomA’S tensioner, swap the belt as well.  It’s hard to get to, and timing belts/chains are relatively affordable .  It’s just the TIME that it would take you or your mechanic to get to it that’s the problem.

The timing chain is an important component in a Dodge Journey’s engine, and it needs to be properly maintained in order for the engine to run smoothly and efficiently. If the timing chain fails, your vehicle may suffer from major damage or even break down completely.

Timing belts are rare.  You’ll likely find a timing chain in most cars and trucks.  Smaller cars, particularly Japanese-made ones, can use timing belts instead of a timing chain.  They are most commonly found on four-cylinder engines.

Most manufacturers will recommend changing the timing belt at 60k or 100k miles.  There isn’t always a service window for the chains, although it can vary.  

Many people get into trouble when they buy a used car with 100k, not realizing that the belt service will be immediately due.

The crew aboard a cargo ship seized by Iran on Saturday are safe, the vessel's operator has said.

There were 25 crew members aboard the MSC Aries when Iranian Revolutionary Guards commandos repelled from a helicopter onto the deck and steered the ship toward Iran.

MSC, which manages the Aires, said it was in discussion with Iranian authorities to secure their release and have the cargo discharged.

The Portuguese-flagged ship with links to Israel was hijacked while traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that separates Iran from Oman and the United Arab Emirates. 

Yesterday, Portugal's foreign ministry summoned Iran's ambassador to demand the immediate release of the vessel.

The hijacking came hours before Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel.

MSC leases the Aries from Gortal Shipping, an affiliate of Zodiac Maritime, which is partly owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. 

Lord Cameron has met the president of Israel and the German foreign minister in Israel.

The British foreign secretary came out of the meeting telling reporters it was clear that Israel had decided to act in response to Iran's attack despite the UK's calls for restraint.

For his part, president Isaac Herzog thanked the UK and Germany for their "strong stand alongside Israel in the face of the reprehensible attack".

"The whole world must work decisively and defiantly against the threat posed by the Iranian regime which is seeking to undermine the stability of the whole region," Mr Herzog said.

Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel after a deadly suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria.

"Israel is unequivocal in its commitment to defending its people," the president said.

Iran's navy is escorting Iranian commercial ships to the Red Sea, according to state media.

Navy commander Shahram Irani said the Jamaran frigate was present in the Gulf of Aden.

Tehran was ready to escort vessels of other countries, he added.

The Red Sea has seen significant disruption to Israel-bound shipping due to attacks from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis. 

On Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized a Portuguese-flagged container ship linked to Israel in the Strait of Hormuz.

It is clear Israel is making a decision to act in response to Iran's attack, Lord Cameron has said.

Speaking from Israel, where he is meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, the foreign secretary said the UK hopes Israel's retaliation "does as little to escalate this as possible".

The UK wants to see "coordinated sanctions against Iran", he said, adding there is more the UK can do.

"It is right to show solidarity with Israel, it is right to have made our views clear about what should happen next, but it is clear the Israelis are making a decision to act.

"We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible and in a way that, as I said yesterday, is smart as well as tough."

He said the UK has sanctioned dozens of people in Iran and the entire Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, but there was "more that we can do to show a united front that Iran is behind so much of the malign activity in this region".

There was a "real need" to refocus on Gaza, including Hamas, the hostage crisis, getting aid into the territory and securing a pause in the conflict, said Lord Cameron.

Iran's president has warned the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response, state media reports.

"The smallest action against Iran's interests will definitely be met with a fierce, widespread and painful response against all its perpetrators," the Iranian president warned, according to Tasnim news agency.

President Ebrahim Raisi spoke at an annual army parade ahead of National Army Day tomorrow.

The parade was relocated to a barracks north of the capital, Tehran, from its usual venue on a highway in the city's southern outskirts, with no explanation given for the move.

State TV did not broadcast it live, as it has in previous years.

Italy has called on Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza.

Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister, said it was time for a ceasefire.

In an interview with La Stampa, Mr Tajani stressed that the war in Gaza was triggered by Hamas's "barbaric" assault. 

He then added: "However, now a ceasefire is necessary. Israel must stop the military operations that have massively affected the Palestinian population."

The interview was conducted ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of Seven which will be hosted by Mr Tajani.

The British foreign secretary has arrived in Israel for talks with Benjamin Netanyahu, as the prime minister considers his response to Iran's missile and drone attack.

Lord Cameron will attempt to "limit" Israel's next move - though there is some acceptance among Western governments that Israel will react, says our  Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall , reporting from Jerusalem.

"The question is what and how can that be limited to the extent that it doesn't create an even worse situation," he says.

He explains the foreign secretary will likely point to US diplomatic and economic punishments for Iran as evidence the West is assisting Israel, and try to use this as leverage to ensure Israel does not lead the region down the path of war.

The US has announced it will enact new sanctions against Iran's defence ministry, the Revolutionary Guards and the country's missile and drone programmes, and Bunkall says he would be surprised if the UK did not follow along those lines.

Lord Cameron told Sky News earlier this week that Israel should "think with head as well as heart".

"I think the smart thing to do is actually to recognise that Iran's attack was a failure and we want to keep the focus on that, on Iran's malign influence and actually pivot to looking at what's happening in Gaza," he said in an interview with Kay Burley.

The humanitarian and hostage crises in Gaza will also be an important part of the talks today, despite the world's focus on Iran, Bunkall adds.

The UN secretary-general has held a phone call with Iran's foreign minister, calling for "urgent de-escalation".

Antonio Guterres said there must be a "renewed focus on bringing peace to the Middle East", according to spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

Mr Guterres reiterated his condemnation of the attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria's capital, Damascus, on 1 April, which he said violated the principle of "inviolability" of diplomatic premises under the Vienna conventions.

"We do not want to see another cycle of an eye for an eye, which is not a policy that will lead to peace," said Mr Dujarric.

The UN chief did not speak to any senior Israeli officials, said Mr Dujarric.

The US ambassador to the UN has said she did not see a resolution recommending the Palestinian Authority become a full UN member leading to a two-state solution.

The Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, is expected to push the Security Council to vote as early as tomorrow on a draft resolution, diplomats said. 

A UN Security Council committee considering the application "was unable to make a unanimous recommendation" on whether it met the criteria.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: "We do not see that doing a resolution in the Security Council will necessarily get us to a place where we can find... a two-state solution moving forward."

She added Joe Biden had categorically said Washington supported a two-state solution and was working to get that in place as soon as possible.

An application to become a full UN member needs to be approved by the Security Council - where the United States can cast a veto - and then at least two-thirds of the 193-member General Assembly. 

The UN says it is still facing obstacles to prevent famine in Gaza.

Aid deliveries met significant Israeli checkpoint delays, said Andrea De Domenico, head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Last week, 41% of UN requests to deliver aid to northern Gaza were denied, he said.

"We're dealing with this dance where we do one step forward, two steps backward, or two steps forward, one step backward, which leaves us basically always at the same point," said Mr De Domenico.

"For every new opportunity that we've been given, we will find yet another challenge to deal with, so it's really, really difficult for us to scale up to where we would like to be." 

There had been a "steady increase" in the number of trucks entering Gaza, he said, but the problem was "not just about food".

"The problem is that famine is much more complex... it's much bigger than simply bringing in flour," said Mr De Domenico.

"Water, sanitation and health are fundamental to curb famine."

US officials have noted progress in the amount of aid that goes into Gaza, but say it is still not at the desired level.

Israel approved reopening the Erez crossing into northern Gaza following global outrage at Israeli airstrikes that killed World Central Kitchen aid workers on 1 April.
