The Abu Dhabi Tourist Visa Explained – Rule Changes in 2022

On this page, we detail everything you need to know about tourist visas for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Note that these visa rules apply no matter which Emirate you come in and out of.

We have updated this page following changes to the visa system in October 2022.

We have attempted to provide clear and accurate information; however, at the time of writing, some aspects of the new Visa system are not entirely clear during this transition period. This page will be amended as soon as more official information becomes available.

In addition to requiring a visa to enter the country as a tourist, please keep abreast of current COVID-19 requirements . As of 7 November, 2022, the Al Hosn “Green Pass” requirement was abolished .

Who needs to apply for a Tourist Visa?

Anyone not a GCC national or eligible for a visa on arrival (see list below) must apply for a visa in advance to visit the UAE.

You can apply either through your airline or UAE-registered tour operator for the appropriate visa.

  • Visa services from Etihad Airways
  • Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline
  • Visa services from Fly Dubai
  • Visa services from Air Arabia

A single entry transit visa for less than 48 hours is free, whilst of 4-day short-stay, visa costs 50AED.

A 30-day, single-entry visa costs in the region of 350 AED, depending on the service that you use to obtain it. Alternatively, a 60-day single-entry visa costs in the region of 650 AED. Both 30 and 60-day single-entry visit visas can be extended for a further 30 days for a fee of 960 AED.

Note that people under the age of 18 cannot apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

Visa-Free Entry to the UAE

Citizens from  GCC Countries   do not need to apply for a visa on arrival to the UAE.

Countries eligible for Visa on Arrival

Upon landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport, simply make your way to immigration, where your visa will be issued.

These countries are currently eligible for a FREE visit visa on arrival to the UAE:

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • People’s Republic of China
  • Republic of El Salvador
  • Republic of Mauritius
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
  • Vatican City

A visit visa for most of these countries lasts for 60 days and can be renewed for another 30 days twice. If you overstay a visit visa, the fine is 200 AED for the first day and 100 AED per day after that – see more below on overstays.

There is a 10-day grace period (this means that you won’t be fined for overstaying your visa until Day 70).

Note that the 26 countries in the Schengen Zone had previously been allowed to stay in the UAE for 90 days, although it is unclear whether this is still the case following the immigration reforms of October 2022.

Five-Year Multi-Visit Visa (New in 2022)

A five-year multi-visit visa is also available for the above countries, which allows the holder to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days in a row and up to 180 days per year.

In order to apply for this type of visa, you need to prove that you have USD 4,000 in your bank account (for at least six months prior to the visa application) and purchase UAE Health Insurance.

Citizens of India

There are specific rules applicable to Indian citizens,  which you can find here .

If you have any concerns, you should verify this information on the UAE Government website.

What happens if my tourist Visa has expired?

If your 60-day tourist visa to the UAE has expired, you have two options:

  • Eid-al-Fitr Fireworks & Celebrations in Abu Dhabi 2024
  • Etihad Unaccompanied Minors: Exactly How it Works
  • Remote Airport Check In For Zayed International Airport Now Open at Yas Mall
  • Leave the country before your 10-day grace period expires (ie, by day 69)
  • Apply to Immigration and pay a fee to have your visit visa extended. It is currently understood that you are able to extend your 60-day visa by 30 days twice, giving you a maximum of 120 days in the UAE ( previously, you could keep renewing indefinitely by leaving the country and returning).

What is a Visa Run?

A Visa run is a common expression used for when you leave the country in order to re-enter and start a fresh visit visa immediately.

Most commonly, this is done on the UAE’s border with Oman as it is quite straightforward and inexpensive to cross by land, provided you have access to a car. We have a detailed guide on how the process works on our Dubai Travel Planner site . It is identical for Abu Dhabi, although there may be closer border crossing points to consider near Al Ain.

There is no need to do a visa run as visas can easily be renewed online, but it is still an option which helps combine costs with a trip to a neighbouring country.

Accidental overstays

It’s important to note if you leave the country during the first 60 days, your UAE Visa on Arrival will not renew upon re-entry. It’s a 60-day multi-entry Visa .  If you are travelling through Abu Dhabi, let’s say onward to Europe, then have a stopover in Abu Dhabi again, be very careful if that second stop sees you cross over from 60 days to 70 days.

Eg: You arrive in Abu Dhabi on 1 September, stay for a few days, and then fly on to Europe. You return to the UAE on 30 October.  You then spend two weeks in Abu Dhabi and fly out again on 12 November.

Even though you only stayed in the UAE for just over two weeks, your original 60-day visa was still valid on re-entry. You are considered to have overstayed your visit visa by 12 days as you did not leave the country, and it was not renewed during the 10-day grace period.

Road trip to Oman?

A good way to avoid this can be to include a trip to Oman with your Abu Dhabi trip!  Musandam is our favourite location for an overnight trip, although the closest crossing point from Abu Dhabi city is Al Ain; not only an amazing experience, but you can avoid any issues with overstaying your visa and receiving a fine by exiting the country between day 60 and day 69.

There are a few small costs involved, and depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for an e-visa in advance. Other than transportation, you have to pay an exit fee to the UAE, and a  tourist Visa entry fee to Oman, currently 5OR for a 10-day visit visa.

Re-entering the UAE, there are no charges on the Omani or UAE side, just stamping of your passports.

If you are travelling in a hire car, you will need to check that your insurance covers Oman and obtain a ’no objection certificate (NOC)’.

Head back to our Abu Dhabi Essential Planning Page

NB If you are looking to work in the UAE and become a resident, different visa categories will apply.  You may still be instructed by a future employer to enter on a tourist visa; then you will be changed across to the appropriate visa category in due course.

Travelling to Abu Dhabi on a tourist visa: the latest Covid rules you need to know

Tourists flying to the capital must have a negative covid-19 result from a test taken no more than 48 hours before departure.

Live updates: follow the latest news on Omicron

Abu Dhabi updated its travel rules for tourists on Thursday.

Travellers were reminded to check visitAbuDhabi.ae for the latest information and Covid-19 precautionary measures before making plans.

Here are the rules for vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors from both green list and non-green list countries:

Travellers who are vaccinated or exempt from vaccination flying into Abu Dhabi

1. First, check the UAE recognises your vaccine. Abu Dhabi accepts vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation and the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention Society.

2. Travellers must download the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship (ICA UAE Smart) app or visit the ica.gov.ae website to complete the Register Arrivals Form 48 hours before the travel date. All travellers will need to validate their vaccination (or exemption) 48 hours before travel via these platforms.

They will be asked to submit personal information, passport details, travel itinerary, address when in Abu Dhabi and a copy of their vaccine certificate.

These will need to be approved before the journey. The average time for the Medical Committee to process applications is 48 hours.

3. Be cleared to fly. Travellers must take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure and fly only once a negative test result has been received.

4. Upon arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport, travellers will need to take another PCR test (only children under 12 and individuals with official exemptions are exempt). This PCR test is available within the terminal and is free of cost, with results received within 90 minutes. Travellers can depart the airport and wait in their hotel for the results.

For unvaccinated travellers flying into Abu Dhabi

1. All the pre-flight rules are the same. Travellers must take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure and fly only once a negative test result has been received.

3. The same PCR testing rules on arrival are applicable.

How are rules different for green list versus non-green list countries?

1. If the unvaccinated traveller comes from a green list country , they will need to take another PCR test on days six and nine (the day of arrival is day one). They will not be required to quarantine if the result is negative. If positive, they must quarantine.

2. If the unvaccinated traveller comes from a non-green list country, they will need to quarantine. If their PCR result taken at the airport is negative, they can go to the hotel and quarantine for 10 days.

If positive, they will be given a wristband to wear during their 10-day quarantine period.

Both positive and negative travellers from the non-green list will need to take a second PCR test at a Seha testing centre on day nine. If the traveller was previously positive and then shows a negative, they can remove their wristband.

If travellers have transited through a green list country from a non-green list country to Abu Dhabi but have spent less than 10 days in the green list location before arriving in Abu Dhabi, they must still complete the quarantine in Abu Dhabi.

Any time spent in the green list country before arriving in Abu Dhabi will count towards the 10-day quarantine period.

Tourists coming from other emirates

Vaccinated tourists must present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate through a mobile application or physical certificate.

They must also present a negative PCR test result received within the past 14 days if they were in the UAE, or a negative 48-hour PCR test obtained from their home country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test obtained within the last 96 hours.

Fully vaccinated and unvaccinated international travellers coming into Abu Dhabi via Dubai or other emirates must follow the same guidelines as the vaccinated and unvaccinated international travellers flying direct, plus a few additional on-ground measures.

These include:

1. Be cleared to fly. Depending on departure country or airline, travellers may be required to take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure, with a negative result mandatory. Travellers are advised to check official channels or airline requirements ahead of travel. Information on those required to take the test ahead of travelling can be found on the Emirates Airline website.

2. Register and share personal information. Download the ICA UAE Smart app or visit the ica.gov.ae website to complete their Register Arrivals Form 48 hours before the travel date.

3. Depending on the traveller’s departure country, they may be required to take a PCR test upon arrival at Dubai International Airport or Sharjah International Airport. If they take the test at the airport, they must remain in their hotel until results are received. If positive, the traveller will undergo isolation and follow the health authority guidelines of each emirate.

4. All passengers travelling to Abu Dhabi via the road will be scanned by an EDE mobile scanning device at the entry point of the emirate.

For tourists entering Abu Dhabi via the Dubai/Abu Dhabi Road entry point, the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi has assigned the right-hand lane (Lane 1) as a dedicated tourist lane.

This lane also has a designated guest’s service office and officials to help tourists.

Anyone with potential Covid-19 symptoms will be sent for a free rapid antigen test, with results delivered within 20 minutes. If the test is positive, travellers can continue into Abu Dhabi but must isolate either at a quarantined hotel or their accommodation, if visiting friends or family.

5. Vaccinated tourists must present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate through a mobile application or physical certificate and present a negative PCR test result obtained within the past 14 days. Unvaccinated tourists can enter by presenting a negative PCR test result obtained within the past 96 hours.

6. For the vaccinated, there will be no further testing or quarantine measures in Abu Dhabi if they test negative.

7. For an unvaccinated traveller who originally comes from a green list country and through Dubai or the other emirates, they will not be required to quarantine once they arrive in Abu Dhabi.

If the unvaccinated traveller originally comes from a non-green list country and through Dubai or the other emirates, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days once they arrive in Abu Dhabi. If they spent some time in Dubai, or other emirates, before arriving in Abu Dhabi, these days will be counted as the part of the 10 days.

Entry to attractions in Abu Dhabi

To enter public attractions in Abu Dhabi, the majority of which allows access to vaccinated visitors only, people will need to present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate or by their home country Covid-19 response mobile application, along with a negative PCR test result, obtained within the past 14 days.

Unvaccinated tourists will not have access to attractions, except for hotel accommodation.

People can download the UAE's test and vaccine app, Al Hosn, to show the green status to enter malls and attractions in the emirate.

What are the isolation rules in Abu Dhabi?

In order to end their isolation period, people who tested positive for Covid-19 must get two negative PCR results 24 hours apart or conduct a PCR test on days eight and 10, and complete 10 days in isolation with no symptoms presented in the final three days of quarantine, after a medical assessment.

Those with mild or moderate symptoms or who do not suffer from chronic illnesses must retest in any health facility in the emirate while continuing to isolate.

If this test is positive, the patient will be contacted by a specialist and told to complete isolation procedures.

Patients in these categories must also receive two negative PCR tests within 24 hours in order to end isolation. But they are urged to continue to comply with precautionary measures once they resume activities.

People who are close contacts will receive a text telling them to take a PCR test and to self-register in home quarantine through a link provided in the message.

Fully vaccinated people must quarantine for seven days, with a 10-day requirement if unvaccinated.

Those who record a positive test must then follow the same protocols set out for those who contract the virus.

Those who test negative should take an additional PCR test – on day six for those who are vaccinated and day nine for those unvaccinated.

If the result is again negative, they can end isolation in line with Covid-19 safety rules.

How often is the green list updated?

Regularly. The most recent changes were made on January 1 and came into effect from January 3.

As of January 3, the list will comprise 71 countries.

The UK, which has reported a surge in Covid-19 cases fuelled by the Omicron variant , was removed, as were Turkey, Jordan, Qatar, Russia and Lebanon.

  • Your intention for visiting is compliant with the B2 visa allowed purposes
  • You have adequate financial means to cover your visit to the US
  • You do not intend to stay in the US and that you will leave as soon as your visa expires
  • Valid passport

What are UAE Mission Visas and How To Apply?

What are UAE Mission Visas and How To Apply?

21 November 2022 - Ankit Anand Visa Dubai Abu Dhabi UAE

What is a Mission Visa in the UAE?

A Mission Visa is a type of permit issued for professionals who would like to come to the UAE to work with a local company for a specific short-term project. An employee is considered as a probationary worker under these types of visas.

How long is a Mission Visa valid for?

Mission Visas are based on a single entry to the UAE only and have a validity of 90 days (3 months). This means that any worker on a Mission Visa cannot exit the country until the end of the visa, if they do leave before visa expiry, the visa will automatically be cancelled and if they wish to return, the Mission Visa must be applied for again.

Can I apply for a UAE Residence Visa once my Mission Visa has expired?

Whilst the applicant is under a Mission Visa in the UAE, it is not possible to apply for a residence visa for the applicant since the mission visa will need to be cancelled and this is only possible once the visa holder has exited the country.

What is the application process for a Mission Visa?

It is important to note that the applicant must be outside the country to apply for a Mission Visa and must exit the country as soon as it expires. A second mission visa can be applied for the employee once they have exited the country and their labour card has been cancelled.

The process of applying for a Mission Visa can take up to 4 weeks to complete from applying for Mission Visa quota to receiving Labour Card and being able to begin work in the UAE.

What is the step by step process for a UAE Mission Visa?

  • Step One: Apply for a Mission Visa quota
  • Step Two: Once the quota is approved, apply for employee Mission Work Permit
  • Step Three: Application must be shared with the employee for signature
  • Step Four: The signed application is submitted for approval
  • Step Five: Once the Work Permit is approved, an application for the Mission Entry Visa is submitted
  • Step Six: Once the Mission Entry Visa is approved and standard issue Mission Visa Insurance coverage is awarded, the applicant is permitted to enter the UAE and obtain an entry stamp on the visa upon arrival
  • Step Seven: The applicant should share a copy of the stamped Mission Visa to the employer
  • Step Eight: A Labour Contract will be prepared, signed by the employee and submitted for approval
  • Step Nine:  Labour Contract and Labour Card are issued.

Since Mission Visa Insurance is issued along with the work permit by the Ministry of Labour, it is not mandatory for employers to provide health insurance to their employees as is the process with regular residence visas. Neither is it compulsory for employers to register employees that are on mission visas with the Wage Protection System (WPS) and to pay their salaries via WPS.

Abu Dhabi sets rules for drone use in the emirate

Uae government.

  • Environment

The decision also seeks to standardise systems and procedures related to drones

1.1903262-3999654662

Abu Dhabi: The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT) has issued Administrative Decision No. (48) of 2024 regarding the regulation of civil use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), aiming to ensure the safe use of drones, in addition to the management, regulation, and monitoring of drone operations and related activities in Abu Dhabi.

It also seeks to standardise systems and procedures related to drones, contribute to making the emirate a hub for the drone industry, enhance smart transportation, as well as innovation in aviation, and attracting investment in Abu Dhabi’s drone sector.

The decision applies to all types of drones and related activities in the emirate. This includes design, manufacturing, assembly, modification, inspection, maintenance, or development of simulation systems, training, qualification, clubs, infrastructure development, airports, fuelling stations, energy, or other activities and uses related to operated drones in the emirate, including free zones; except for the exempted drones and activities under the Federal Decree by Law No. (26) of 2022 on Regulating the Civil Use of Drones and Related Activities.

The DMT also clarified that it has assumed several responsibilities under the applicable legislation, these include oversight, permit and certificate issuance, establishing rules for drone flight conditions, and setting standards for drone take-off and landing sites, along with creating guidelines for drone-specific infrastructure like airports and runways in coordination with the relevant local and federal authorities.

DMT will also conduct awareness workshops for drone owners and operators, encompassing both individuals and entities. The sessions will clarify the procedures and requirements for drone operation and associated activities within the emirate, in accordance with administrative directive, civil aviation regulations, and technical guidelines governing drone systems in Abu Dhabi.

NYU Sends Out Offers of Admission To the Class of 2028

Offers of admission to NYC campus were made to just 8% of the 118,000 undergraduate applicants

NYU has released offers of admission to the Class of 2028. Offers of admission to NYU’s New York campus were made to just 8% of those submitting 118,000 applications to be members of next fall’s entering undergraduate class. Three of NYU’s undergraduate colleges offered admission to fewer than 5% of applicants.

This cycle, NYU witnessed its largest early decision applicant pool in history, comprising over 22,000 applications, marking a 56%-surge in Early Decision applications across NYU’s degree-granting campuses over the past five years. Over 60% of the applications to NYU were from public schools, with almost 9,000 of them from students who work with non-profit organizations such as OppNet, Bottom Line, College Advising Corps (CAC), Minds Matter, and the Charles Hayden Foundation, among others, who partner with NYU to create new pathways to increase educational access.

NYU anticipates that 20% of the class will be Pell Grant recipients and 20% will be First-Generation students. This year’s cohort represents over 103 countries, 49 states (all but North Dakota), several US territories, and approximately 1,000 students from New York City public schools.

The NYU Promise: The NYU Promise is President Linda G. Mills’ expanded commitment to affordability. More than 1,000 students are recipients of the NYU Promise, which offers free tuition for students with family incomes under $100,000. In addition, the NYU Promise includes meeting students’ demonstrated need if it is beyond tuition and increasing aid annually to keep pace with increases in tuition.

“NYU’s admitted class of 2028 is made up of students who represent the best of us,” said Jonathan Williams, Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Admissions, Pre-College Access and Pathways. “Throughout their high school journey, these remarkable young individuals hail from various corners of the United States and the globe. They have proven themselves to be exemplary bridgebuilders, striving to connect diverse perspectives and foster understanding. Their unwavering perseverance in the face of myriad challenges showcases their dedication to creating a better world – together. They are shining examples of good listeners, global citizens, and future leaders. Their presence will undoubtedly enrich the NYU community and contribute to a brighter future for all.”

New York University

Founded in 1831, NYU is one of the world’s foremost research universities (with more than $1 billion per year in research expenditures, it is ranked seventh among private research universities) and is a member of the selective Association of American Universities. NYU has degree-granting university campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai; has 13 other global academic sites, including London, Paris, Florence, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, and Accra, and US sites in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, and Tulsa, OK; and both sends more students to study abroad and educates more international students than any other U.S. college or university. Through its numerous schools and colleges, NYU is a leader in conducting research and providing education in the arts and sciences, law, medicine, business, dentistry, engineering, education, nursing, the cinematic and performing arts, music and studio arts, public administration, social work, public health, and professional studies, among other areas.
