Sri Lanka & Maldives

We had booked Sri Lanka + Maldives holiday with ALT for February 2025. We had lots of questions, emails and phone calls before we had finalized our itinerary.. Jonathan M was extremely helpful and patient with our queries.. His responses were very quick and detailed.. We didn't feel preassured or rushed, we were giving enough time to finalise our perfect holiday.

The Good, the Bad and the truly amazing!in 2 parts

This review and rating is in 2 parts. First the bad. Our connecting flights from London to Columbo were booked via Mumbai. What wasn’t explained was that instead of being booked as a through flight they were booked as separate. The problem this caused was that this meant we were supposed to have an Indian flight. As we did not know this it meant we were refused entry to our flight. Due to the early nature of the flight we were not able to reach ALT. Due to us having a whole itinerary that followed the flight we had to ensure we arrived that day. Hence we were left with no option but to purchase 2 new tickets at our own cost. As you would expect this started the holiday off on the back foot. This did leave a cloud over the holiday but Mark from ALT customer services was very prompt with acknowledging the problem and replying to my messages. I had hoped for some conclusion whilst we were away but eventually when we returned we were able to get a full refund for the tickets we had to pay for. As mentioned, Mark was exceptionally helpful and was key to getting the issue resolved. Now for the good part. The local team in Sri Lanka were amazing. From the moment we landed to the sad moment we had to leave we were treated amazingly. Sugath, our driver tour guide and now friend was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble and his intimate knowledge of everywhere we went really helped us understand the vast heritage of this beautiful country. The Maldives is just paradise and the island we choose was stunning and had a great house reef and we were extremely fortunate and got to see all kinds of beautiful sea creatures. All in all the holiday was truly the perfect once in a life time trip.

Great Customer Service

My initial flight to Mauritius was booked with Emirates but due to the flooding in Dubai, no flights were landing. I contacted the travel agency and was helped by Patric. He went far and beyond to make sure I got a flight the next day with Air Mauritius. If not for Patric's endeavour and great customer service I would not have been able to attend my friend's wedding.

First class company

This has been a truly fantastic experience. From our flight being cancelled, which ALT sorted for us, so we didn’t have to worry, to the fantastic Mr Sanjay, our personal driver, and the magnificent hotels we stayed at. We were treated like queens. ALT messaged every day to see how things were, and to make sure we were happy. We honestly cannot fault any part of the company at all. From the first payment to the last outing, everything went smoothly. 10/10

Excellent customer Service

We booked holiday in Thailand in 3 different hotels. First 2 was like a heaven, everything perfect. We have been collected from airport and took to the hotels without any problems. Third hotel Apsara Beach in Khao Lak was an absolutely disaster- dirty , our room was smelly with the look to the kitchen. The hotel trying to scam us and charged for another room! After the conversation with Mark from CS we have been able to change not just room but the hotel within couple hours ! Thank you Affordable Luxury and Mark for your competency , empathy and all your help with our holiday. Keep a space for us for next holiday !

Dear Katarzyna, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're thrilled to hear that your overall holiday in Thailand was enjoyable, and we deeply appreciate your kind words regarding our customer service. We sincerely apologize for the challenges you faced at the third hotel, Apsara Beach in Khao Lak. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we're delighted that Mark from our Customer Service team was able to swiftly assist you in resolving the situation. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we're committed to continuously improving our services to ensure that every aspect of your holiday meets and exceeds your expectations. Forthcoming trip to Kerala

Having decided to go to Kerala - we contacted Affordable Luxury Travel and our agent Max Sharma put together the itinerary. He has been most helpful with nothing being too much trouble and been so accommodating with all our requirements. To date we can’t fault his commitment and helpfulness. We are really looking forward to our trip later on this year.

Kerala and Cochin experience

From booking holiday to the places we visited was absolutely fabulous, travel agent when booking made everything easy, from the getting off the plane , being greeted by driver ,dropped off at fabulous hotels with excellent staff, places we saw where out of this world. I would definitely recommend this tour for nature lovers, or anyone looking to relax and see what nature has to offer.

Extremely poor

Extremely poor. We've been working with Jazz. He was very responsive when we were booking. We paid the deposit. Then a much cheaper option became available from another vendor. I asked Jazz if they'd match it and his responsiveness has dropped from without a couple of hours to more than a couple of weeks, between emails. Quite disappointed. Update: 5th April 2024. I asked for my deposit back because they'd effectively stopped communicating with me. They initially said they would refund it, then didn't. I asked my credit card to overturn it, and they've been telling me that they want to give me my money back whilst arguing with my credit card company to keep it. Overall, an extremely dishonest organisation.

Thailand/ Malaysia holiday…

I decided to book a holiday to Thailand and Malaysia, I found affordable luxury travel and called to enquire about a holiday I saw. The travel agent i spoke to was Max Sharma. From my initial call to he was very helpful, gave me confidence booking with him, and always ensured everything was as I wanted the holiday to be. 13 Luxury Vacations That Are Surprisingly Affordable

These luxury vacations offer incredible experiences and five-star amenities without breaking the bank.

Planning a vacation is never an easy task, especially when it's time to talk about budget. But luxury vacations don't actually need to break the bank. We think it's time for you to take the trip of a lifetime without spending your life savings, so we've found 13 vacation ideas that will leave you in awe of the trip and the price.

Stay in a French Castle for $88

While some Airbnb listings — like Kylie Jenner's $50-million rental in Turks and Caicos — are only for the very wealthy, the hospitality industry also has hidden gems for the more budget-conscious traveler. Jet off to France and live out your royal dreams staying in a three-bedroom castle with a pool for as little as $88/night.

Go Glamping for Under $50 a Night

Stylish glamping stays from tents to private chalets are available at a range of price points, with several options under $100 a night — there are even eco-bungalows in Mexico's Akumal from $47 a night .

Find Your Joie De Vivre in Paris for Under $200 a Night

Experience the fabulous life of a French local with Paris Perfect . The vacation rental agency provides accommodation options at some of the most unreal apartments in the City of Lights with rates from less than $200 a night. You can even filter by apartments with an Eiffel Tower view, which start at $335 a night. Plus, since you'll have a kitchen, you can even save more by cooking some meals at home.

Fly Private at Economy Prices

A ticket through JSX , a semi private-flight experience at (almost) commercial airline prices, gives you access to a private terminal, where you can go from parking to takeoff in 15 minutes. No more being stressed out about getting to the airport early, waiting in long lines, or squeezing into a coach seat. The catch: Flights are only available between a few cities, including many on the West Coast and in Texas as well as Miami, Florida, and Westchester County, New York.

Spring for A Cheap and Chic Colombian Getaway

Colombia's port city of Cartagena seems to be on everyone's travel bucket list these days. Make that dream trip a reality with an affordable booking at Oz Hotel , a chic spot with nightly rates starting at $39 a night. It's located near the beach and also has a rooftop terrace with city views.

Stay in Dar es Salaam Instead of Zanzibar Resorts

Tourists — especially newlyweds — are quick to head to resorts in Zanzibar, Tanzania. While there's no denying the quality of these expensive seaside accommodations, don't forget that it's possible to have a similar luxury beach experience on the Tanzanian mainland for a much more affordable price. The Ramada by Wyndham in Dar es Salaam — with rooms from $147 a night — is located along the shores of Jangwani beach. It's a budget-friendly way to enjoy the waves of the Indian Ocean while taking in the nearby city center. The hotel also offers airport shuttles and late checkout .

Live It Up in New York City

Instead of squeezing yourself into Manhattan for an average, over-priced hotel room, venture out into Brooklyn for equally trendy neighborhoods — here's looking at you, Bushwick and Williamsburg — for much more affordable rates.

Book a Taste of Thailand

Opt for a stress-free yet unforgettable getaway to Southeast Asia on this Friendly Planet vacation across Thailand, a 10-day trip that will only set you back $1,849 a person. With roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations, and visits to some of the country's most historic attractions (such as Ayutthaya, an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site) included, this deal is hard to pass up.

Stay at a Five-star Resort on the Amalfi Coast for Less Than $300 a Night

This five-star beauty is elegant and historic. What used to be a 13th-century monastery has been converted into an Amalfi Coast hotel with some of the most spectacular views around. Almost all of the rooms look out to sea, and even though it's perched high up a cliff, it's only a five-minute walk to the harbor and city center. There's also a majestic Catholic church at the hotel for those looking to tie the knot. Rates start at $274 a night if you book direct, though you may be able to score an even lower deal on sites like Expedia.

Book a Standalone Casita in Mexico With Private Pool Views

A stay at one of the oceanside suites at Hotel Las Brisas in Acapulco, Mexico, is your chance to truly treat yourself without breaking the bank. Starting at $157 a night, you can book a casita with a private pool overlooking incredible views.

Stay in a Cabana on the Beach in Tulum for $200 a Night

Stunning accommodations and private beach access make Ahau Tulum worth visiting. Depending on the time of year, you could book a stay in one of the charming Bali Huts starting at $200 a night.

Relax on the Siem Reap River in Cambodia

Breathe easy with a stay at this intimate 36-room, five-star hotel alongside the Siem Reap River in Cambodia. All of the rooms at Jaya House River Park have either balcony views or direct garden or pool access, and it's just a short ride to Angkor Wat. Nightly room rates start around $109 a night, depending on the season.

Fall in Love With Franschhoek, South Africa

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

The sunny vineyards of Franschhoek, South Africa are a wine-lover's paradise, and planning a trip during the low season will help you score hotels at unbelievably low prices. As an example, check out the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel , which starts at $100 a night and is situated a few steps from one of the trolley stops that conveniently connects you to various wineries in the area.

No matter the destination, Travel + Leisure GO can turn your vacation dreams into reality with nearly endless reservation options to fly or stay near or far.

Today: 10 tips & tricks for affordable luxury travel in 2022

Now that 2022 is here and with some hope that the pandemic might finally become endemic, it’s time to start making travel plans . And while we all dream of traveling to far-flung destinations, flying in Business (or First ) Class and staying at ultraluxe hotels , nobody likes to break their wallet on a holiday. Here are the top 10 travel tips & tricks that I use to optimize my own travel expenses.

Feel free to share your own travel tips & tricks, and leave a comment .

SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

1. FIND THE CHEAPEST HOTEL RATE ON TRIVAGO OR HOTELSCOMBINED

When I want to stay at a particular luxury hotel, I always start with an online search for the cheapest room rate at that hotel. This may sound like mission impossible given the number of search engines that are available on the internet these days, but it is not difficult at all since two aggregator websites will do the job for you in just a few clicks!  Trivago  and  Hotelscombined are two very helpful websites that check at once the price of a hotel room at hundreds of other sites (e.g. Ebookers, Booking.com, Otel.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, Hotelopia, etc …) and then show you where you can book the cheapest rate. Try it out for yourself here (and find out how easy it is):

Compare. Book. Save. With HotelsCombined.com

Once I found the cheapest rate for a hotel room on Trivago or Hotelscombined, my strategy to book that rate depends on the hotel type:

  • If the hotel does not belong to a large hotel chain, I book the room via Hotels.com using a  Best Rate Guarantee ; this not only enables me to book that room at the cheapest rate (found on Trivago or Hotelscombined), but in addition, I collect free hotel nights via Hotels.com’s excellent Rewards program (read  here why I like Hotels.com so much).
  • If the hotel is part of a large hotel chain (e.g. Hilton, Marriott, InterContinental, Hyatt, etc …), I make the booking directly on the official hotel website using a Best Rate Guarantee program; this will get me an additional 10-25% discount and enables me to collect  loyalty points  that I can redeem for free hotel nights.
  • If the hotel offers complimentary Virtuoso perks (cf below), then I calculate how much I would save by booking via Virtuoso (which rarely offers the cheapest rate) compared to Hotels.com or the official hotel website (which rarely comes with extra perks). If the difference is substantial, then Virtuoso is always my first choice for a hotel booking. Fyi, booking via Virtuoso will also get you hotel points within your preferred hotel loyalty program.

2. GET UPGRADES AND OTHER VIP PERKS WHEN BOOKING VIA VIRTUOSO

Booking luxury hotels via  Virtuoso is an extremely rewarding travel tip, not so much in terms of saving money on the room rate, but rather in terms of free perks that you will receive at the property itself (e.g. upgrades, dinners, spa treatments, etc …). Virtuoso is the industry’s leading network of luxury travel advisors, spanning over 26 countries and 9,000 travel advisors. So when you book your holiday with Virtuoso, most of the time, you will be in touch with a Virtuoso travel agent and not make the booking online yourself. Virtuoso travel agents network with the world’s most luxurious hotels & resorts, most of them belonging to the portfolio of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands . The single best reason to book a stay through a Virtuoso travel agent is that it means value for money as it will get you access to the above mentioned special VIP perks (and will potentially save you hundreds of dollars).

The advantage of booking through Virtuoso is particularly evident when staying at an Aman property, the world’s top hotel chain. In line with Aman’s hyper-exclusive and ultra-luxurious reputation, you’ll never find a lower rate than the one published on the official  Aman website. But booking through a Virtuoso travel agent rather than on the Aman website itself will get you some free extra perks (often worth hundreds of dollars). So if you are an Aman junkie, like me, then Virtuoso is the way to go (otherwise you are leaving money on the table).

My favorite Virtuoso travel agency is  Classic Travel , not only because of their excellent service, but also because they are one of the few Virtuoso travel agencies that offer an excellent online booking tool (click the banner below to try it out for yourself).

3. FIND THE CHEAPEST FLIGHTS WITH GOOGLE

I mostly use the airfare search engine Kayak  when planning my air travel. Kayak checks the price of your requested flight at tons of sites at once, including  Orbitz   and  Cheaptickets , and allows flexibility in your travel dates. However, Kayak does not display all prices, so that is why I also check other online ticket-sellers as well (e.g. Travelocity ,  Hipmunk ,  Momondo ,  Hotwire ,  Skyscanner , and  Expedia ). Another tool that has also helped me tremendously in finding the cheapest ticket is Google Flights . It’s a very simple tool: you just enter your travel dates and destination (city or country), hit ‘explore destinations’ and Google shows you a map where you can travel for the lowest price.

4. FOLLOW FAMOUS TRAVEL BLOGGERS

Many airlines and hotels have their own loyalty programs that allow you to earn points or miles that are redeemable for free flights, upgrades, hotel stays, car rentals or shopping. Everybody should participate in these programs as they can save you tons of money by travelling (almost for) free as well as offer you tons of other perks. However, it does take quite some effort to get some basic knowledge of how to collect miles & points in the most efficient manner. One of the best travel tips is to subscribe to the newsletters of expert bloggers, so that you will be instantly updated on promotions and tricks for earning or spending your miles or hotel points. I hereby list my 6 favorite travel bloggers, who have helped me to save considerably on my own travel budget:

  • One mile at a time (my favorite blog)
  • The Points Guy
  • Million Mile Secret
  • Loyalty Lobby
  • View from the Wing
  • Head for Points

That said, my own travel blog (now seven years old) also aims to be a valuable resource with tips & tricks that help you save money when traveling in style. In my hotel reviews , I always write a section about ‘how to save money’, which explains the best strategy to book that particular hotel. In addition, each Friday, I publish a newsletter with interesting up-to-date travel tips.

5. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SALES BY AIRLINES (ESPECIALLY QATAR AIRWAYS)

Most airlines occasionally run sales, offering flight tickets at a discounted rate. If you add yourself to their mailing lists, you will be notified among the first when they have a sale. For example, British Airways often has sales where they allow you to book a Business Class return trip and fly one leg in First Class. Swiss regularly launches sales with First Class fares that are cheaper than flying Business Class. But the winner here is Qatar Airways , which often launches incredible 2-for-1 sales where your companion will travel for free when you buy one Business Class ticket. For example, a few weeks ago, Qatar Airways had a sale with Business Class fares from Europe and the USA to the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Oceania from as low as an incredible 1000 euros or 850 USD per person. Although that sale has ended now, they will launch some new ones in the future.

6. EARN MILES BY CREDIT CARD

I guess most of you are familiar with the concept of airline miles, but for those who aren’t: frequent-flyer programs are customer loyalty programs used by airlines that allow you to earn points (or miles) that are redeemable for free flights. Around 50% of my miles are not earned by flying, but by using my credit card, which earns me 1.5 miles for every dollar spent. I don’t spend more money since I have this credit card, but I ‘learned’ to use my credit card for all my daily expenses (grocery, gas, shopping, etc …) instead of paying in cash. In the US, and to a lesser extent the UK, credit cards are great for earning lots of miles (signing up for a credit card can come with huge mileage bonus offers, often enough for a transatlantic Business Class ticket). If you are not a resident of the USA or UK, a good strategy may be to acquire an American Express credit card, which is available in most countries (albeit often at a heavy fee) and allows you to convert Amex points in airline miles.

7. UPGRADE USING YOUR MILES

You may not have enough miles for a Business Class flight, but if you book in the class below your preferred seat, you may be able to upgrade your ticket using your air miles or points. British Airways is one of the airlines with the best frequent flyer program when it comes to using your miles for an upgrade (I have reviewed British Airways Business and First Class flights on a number of occasions  here ). Using British Airways miles – called Avios – to upgrade one class (from Economy to Premium Economy, from Premium Economy to Business, or from Business to First) is one of the best ways to spend them. It usually requires around 25,000 Avios to upgrade a cash booking to the next cabin on a longhaul flight (when there’s availability of course). Avios can be used for an upgrade on British Airways, Iberia and American Airlines flights.

For example, if you want to fly with British Airways in Business Class from London to New York, you can book a Premium Economy ticket, and then login to “Manage My Booking” on BA.com , select your flight and choose to ”Upgrade this flight with Avios”. If there is reward availability, British Airways will tell you how much it will cost. In this example, an off-peak reward flight in World Traveller Plus costs 26,000 Avios; an off-peak reward flight in Club World costs 50,000 Avios. Therefore the cost to upgrade this flight using Avios is 50,000-26,000 = 24,000 Avios. If you booked your ticket through a travel agent, you will need to check with them to see if your booking can be upgraded with Avios. Alternatively, if you are ready to book and do not yet have any tickets for your trip, you can use the  BA.com  ‘book and upgrade’ form to search for availability and get a price for booking and upgrading at the same time.

Even if you don’t have enough miles for an upgrade, don’t despair. If you are running low, consider converting your hotel points over to airline miles to boost your balance. Many airlines also offer a part-buy miles-flight option where you can pay to buy in the miles that you need as you book your redemption ticket.

8. TRAVEL TO EMERGING DESTINATIONS

The most popular travel destinations are popular – and expensive – for good reason. Think Maldives  or  Seychelles , and you know that the superlative scenery will cost you at least a $1000 USD per night in high season (and that’s not even for a room in a top hotel). But some of us are looking for more profound and authentic experiences that these off-the-shelf tourist attractions just can’t offer – experiences that also allow to save big on travel. Only few countries fit that profile and they are on my radar to visit in the near future, before the crowds – and with that a rise of room rates – arrive: Mongolia, Georgia, Montenegro, the Cook Islands, Uzbekistan and Paraguy all seem terrific travel destinations for 2022, where one can still travel cheap without compromising too much on luxury. And if you need some more travel inspiration and tips, you can also check the Lonely Planet’s passion-packed list of 2022’s must-see destinations , places, and immeasurable experiences.

9. BOOK NEWLY OPENED HOTELS

Booking newly opened hotels is one of the money saving travel tricks that I have been using for years with success. I always try to stay at luxury hotels that just opened to make use of often insane opening offers, launched to lure guest. For instance, Soneva Jani in the Maldives (opened in 2016) and Six Senses Bhutan (opened in 2019) offered their guests discounts of more than 50% (including many extras) in the first weeks after they opened. Some hotels will even allow you to negotiate your own rate (that happened to me when I stayed at Como Maalifushi in the Maldives and Raflles Seychelles ). For that reason, you may want to read my lists of the hottest new hotels 2021 and 2022, and check whether one of the featured hotels is located along one of your future travel itineraries. Especially in Asia, there seems to be a boom in luxury hotels (e.g. Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand).

10. DON’T BE OBSESSED BY TRAVEL & LOYALTY

I admit that I used to be obsessed by loyalty programs in the past. I would book hotels and do mileage runs, with the simple goal of acquiring as much hotel points and airline miles as possible. Granted, this strategy has offered me plenty of awesome experiences, such as flying First Class with many of the world’s best airlines. However, over the years, I came to realize that loyalty has become less rewarding (with many hotel and airline programs introducing massive devaluations) and that loyalty was determining my travel plans and not the other way around. That is why I left my obsession for loyalty programs behind me. By doing so, I noticed that I reduced my levels of travel-related stress (yes, loyalty can cause stress by making you want to maintain your elite status) and that I introduced more variety in my travels by exploring new destinations, airlines and hotels. In fact, I am considering abandoning all my loyalty programs and just take a more relaxed approach when it comes to travel, especially since there are so many good travel deals out there these days that loyalty doesn’t seem to make much sense anymore.

Enjoy the weekend and stay tuned for Monday when I reveal a new  top 10 travel list .

Thank you. I’m taking away the list of the best new hotels. We are planning to travel to Europe this year, and this tip is just perfect for us. Keep on sharing!

Not too sure if I did the right thing as I googled flights Cairns to Darwin return 13 Feb and was over $100 more expensive than other sites. But i do soak up all your info on hotels and cant wait to get out there, sadly we are told 2020. Hope I am still around then.

This is great! I normally like more backpacking and choose hostels and stuff like that, but this year I feel like we all deserve to treat ourselves a bit more 😊

“best holiday ever”.

written by saMassey388 on 27/03/2024

Great Holiday in Kerala Well organized holiday from start to finish. Jazz was very knowledgeable and tailored our trip to suit our needs. Great range of hotels and Luxury resorts which enabled us to have a great experience in Kerala, Guides and drivers were great and we were supported at all stages as we travelled. Jazz listen to what we require on a holiday, make suitable recommendations or alternatives if first choice not available. Dietary requirements sent to all hotels before hand by local representatives. We were extremely pleased with the local representative in Kerala, who checked by phone several times during our tour to ensure that everything was going well. The information sent via the internet app and the printed copy prior to departure was excellent. Excellent pre-travel advice and preparation were provided and the itinerary was excellent, along with a fantastic driver and tour guide in Kerala. It represents excellent value for money. Kerala is definitely a place we will return to in the future

“Amazing holiday in Kerala”

written by LilliannaBateman365 on 03/03/2024

We (30yo couple) had a two week tour in Kerala, India, with Affordable Luxury Travel. The tour was very well organised and all of the hotels we stayed in were high quality. Our driver Ajeeshkumar was very helpful, especially when we had an encounter with the local wildlife. All of the food was excellent. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore Kerala.

“A wonderful trip”

written by danrd184 on 11/02/2024

We have had an excellent trip to Kerala in India. I really liked the personal service from the team at Affordable Luxury, who produced an exciting and detailed itinerary for us that was the right blend of sightseeing and relaxing. When we arrived we were greeted at the airport by our driver, who also acted as our guide for the duration of our holiday. We also met with Affordable Luxury's local agent in Kerala, who was always available on WhatsApp and often checked that everything was ok. The level of personal service we had once we arrived far exceeded our expectations. Our driver's stories and local knowledge made every day so enjoyable and memorable. We also spent some time relaxing in a stunning resort afterwards, which really topped off our holiday. This was our first trip to India, and Affordable Luxury and their Kerala team were part of making it the holiday of a life time!

“Fantastic Maldives and Kerala trip”

written by ANDYPSAINTS on 18/12/2023

We couldn’t have asked for more from Affordable Luxury Travel. The itinerary that they organised for us plus the standard of the accommodation was superb. Although, we did see the real India this was only really possible because of either our driver or a guide. I don’t think we would have been so adventurous had we been left to our own devices. The driver we had for our Kerala trip, Anjol, was a very nice guy and very informative, as well as a good driver. Overall the holiday was fantastic and that was in no small part to Affordable Luxury Travel. I would highly recommend them.

“Kerala - Culture, Backwaters & Nature”

written by FENWAYHEDGEHOGMULL on 16/12/2023

I returned on Dec 12th 2023 from a truly magical & culturally diverse trip to the beautiful Indian state of Kerala. My driver Anil (& for the duration of my trip) met me at Cochin airport on arrival from the Uk.He was absolutely wonderful & so knowledgeable, accomodating & helpful & we gelled immediately which made my " road trip" with him between 5* accomodation stops all the more enjoyable. The standard of accomodation was exceptional & the friendly staff & local people i met at the variety of places i stayed at in stunning locations surrounded by forest, back waters, lush tropical vegetation, lakes & so much more i will remember forever & i can't wait to return, with Anil as my driver again of course ???? Affordable Luxury Travel really do offer " affordable" packages & in my case as a solo female traveller i found my whole trip so rewarding & a life enriching experience. The variety of food was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend " ALT" for anyone wanting a very speccial & memorable holiday.A big thank you to the representative at " ALT" for helping my dream become a reality !!

“Kerala ”

written by Steve657657 on 08/12/2023

Just returned from our tailor made 12 night holiday meal in Kerala. It was fantastic! We knew nothing about Kerala , just advised what we liked and they organised everything! Flights accommodation and travel. We had our own driver and car, they were excellent. Anil was happy to accommodate any changes to our schedule, took us to amazing places. The accommodation venues were exceptional, particularly the Indian Summer House, Spice village and Marari beach. The team in India kept us constantly informed of timing etc, were flexible and more than that great company and fun. Genuinely couldn’t recommend highly enough

“ A luxury personalised introduction to the best of Kerala ”

written by on 16/11/2023

Every aspect of this trip was meticulously organized in advance. The implementation was flawless and, when we asked for changes, they were swiftly incorporated. Affordable Luxury Travel took very good care of us and made our trip a joy. Their local representative paid attention to small things that made a big difference: such as arriving at a strange international airport to be greeted by a waiting car and driver; having a careful driver and a comfortable vehicle suitable for the long drives that were necessary to reach the places we wanted to visit. The hotels we stayed in were well chosen for their location, comfort, and character; most notably the Bruntonboatyard with their timeless elegance and charm. At the Indian Summer House, we enjoyed delicious food cooked by the team. Ayurvedic massages, boat trips to the local tea shop, and the tuk-tuk ride home were among our favorite experiences. The staff at Spice Village in Thekkady were incredibly friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the resort's ethos and being out in nature. Our houseboat stay was also wonderful. The operator and waiter were amazing and the experience was one we won’t forget cruising down the backwaters looking at the scenery and wildlife. The food served in the house was also some of the best we've had on our entire trip! Ending the Holiday at Marari Beach Resort what a dream this place heaven on earth ( Marari) sprawled over nearly 40 acres.Loads of grounds, Stunning pool, grounds, beach, and lovely staff. Our guide was capable, friendly, knowledgeable, and jocular, From time to time, it was necessary to remind him that we had come to experience the culture, history, and geography of the country. Thanks to Jazz at Affordable Luxury Travel

“Enchanting Kerala”

We spent 10 days around Kerala under the expert guidance of our driver and guide. He was so welcoming, with a lovely personality, as well as being immensely knowledgeable about the areas we were going to. He was always on time and we really enjoyed our experience with him. Affordable Luxury were easy to deal with and the activities, sights and hotels they chose really enhanced our experience.

“Classic Kerala tour”

written by 410Maurer on 30/10/2023

This was an amazing trip. So many highlights and would thoroughly recommend Affordable Travel and this tour. Our first trip to India, how lucky were we. The hotels were of the highest standard and the staff were so friendly, helpful and very engaging - Marriott in Kochin, Spice Tree in Munnar, Hills and Hues in Thekkady, Blue Jelly houseboat in Alleppey and lastly Kumarakom Resort and Spa on Lake Vembanad. Our driver was brilliant, he was delighted to show us the real Kerala and also guide us through local Indian cuisine. We melted when we saw the tea plantations, just breathtaking, the houseboat was magnificent, the spa treatment at Spice tree was perhaps the best we have had, the Chinese fishing nets and dhobi khana experience in Cochin bring reality and wonder to this state. Spice garden was so interesting and the two shows were fascinating. The Periyar lake trip was relaxing and we saw the local Sambar, no elephants for us here on this occasion but they were down by the lake the day before. We saw our elephants at a festival in Alleppey which was incredible, we were very lucky. Festival time is great, we saw a different type near our houseboat in the backwater. An optional trip to Tamil Nadu was fascinating, lots of bird life, an agricultural state and a very different pace of life, so glad we decided to go, a half day visit by jeep. I am sure I have missed things, there is so much to see but the itinerary is well worth taking part in. Our only frustration was trying to access money from the ATM’s, our impression from the internet is that they are everywhere, not in our experience, especially in the hills and the hotels are not keen to change money so next time we would change more money at the airport before we set off. Thank you Affordable Travel for a great trip of very high quality.

“Amazing Classic Kerala Tour”

written by Odin257 on 24/10/2023

We have just returned from a wonderful 10 night tour of Kerala. From start to finish out trip was excellent, and it had everything we could wish for; Culture, Tea, Wildlife, Backwaters & Beaches. All were promised and Affordable Luxury Travel delivered on all fronts. Starting in Kochi we had a relaxing stay in the Fragrant Nature hotel. The rooftop pool and panoramic view were much appreciated after the long journey. Food, hotel, and local activities were all top class. We moved on to the Indian Summer House where the team treated us to delicious home cooked food. We especially enjoyed the boat trip to the local tea shop, the tuk-tuk ride home, and our ayurvedic massages. Next was the visit to Munnar to see the tea fields, tea museum, and a visit to the local market. We also enjoyed staying in our room at the Ambady Estate, and the huge meals we were served. Probably the biggest breakfast I've ever eaten! The Spice Village was a real treat. We only had a single night there. We will have to go back to really take advantage of all the facilities on offer. From here we enjoyed the boat trip through the wildlife park seeing various animals and birds, and had an interesting visit to a spice garden. The highlight of our trip was the stay on our own private houseboat where the team really looked after us with a relaxing cruise along the river, and some delicious meals served on deck. After all the touring, we enjoyed the last few days by the beach at the Marari Beach Resort. I particularly enjoyed spending some time with the very knowledgeable and talented nature team who look after and document all the various animals, birds and insects that can be found onsite. And the archery lessons by the entertainment team! What made the entire trip most special was our entertaining, friendly, and generous driver who was a real friend during our trip. It was through him we learnt most about the Kerala with his insights on life in the region. He was a real credit to the team, and appreciate our time together. Thank you very much! We are so pleased with our trip, that we are already considering our next trip with Affordable Luxury Travel! Thanks again!

“Kerala 11 days Tour-Rewarding, Relaxing, Revitalizing ”

written by AnnKinsley on 17/10/2023

We got back from our 11 Nights & 12 days Kerala tour. An excellent trip all round, from the point of booking our agent was helpful and informative and everything went like clockwork. Our driver/guide was superb and could not have been more helpful or patient. All the accommodation was very good, especially the Eighth Bastion in Kochi, Spice Tree in Munnar which was beautiful with fantastic staff, Spice village has a lovely setting and incredible houseboat in Alleppey backwaters. As we finished our holiday at coconut Lagoon on the banks of Vembanad lake, I would have liked to have been able to spend an extra day at Kovalam beach. However, the whole trip was a great way to see the highlights of Kerala. Well done, at Affordable Luxury Travel.

“Exceptional Kerala Tour”

written by JohnFinley on 15/10/2023

Having returned from Kerala, India all I can say is that it far exceeded my expectations. Extremely well organized and executed, our Guide/Driver was amazing and flexible with great knowledge which was shared with us. Hotels were all very good with great helpful and friendly staff. All the quality of the hotels were top rate with wonderfully comfortable surroundings, amazing staff and excellent food. There is no way to describe the beauty of Indian Summer House, our favorite. The welcome and stay, including crossing the river and visiting a traditional tea house, were excellent. Our houseboat stay was also wonderful. The driver and waiter were amazing and the experience was one we won’t forget cruising down the backwaters looking at the scenery and wildlife. The food served at the house was also some of the best we ate on our entire trip.Tea plantations in Munnar, traditional river boats on the backwaters,Periyar wildlife sanctuary, Chinese fishing nets, Marari beach resort and other visits were brilliant. Well done Affordable Luxury Travel Holidays and all for a very reasonable price...I will definitely recommend and use this company again.

“My trip to Kerala was perfectly organized by...”

written by CHARLESVK on 12/10/2023

My trip to Kerala was perfectly organized by Affordable Luxury Travel There's a lot to see and do in Kerala in 14 days. Full attention from being collected to dropped off at the Airports, The entire experience felt safe and secure to us . The hotels were excellent, clean, the food fabulous and staff friendly and helpful. Our driver was punctual, knowledgeable and helpful throughout. The CGH Earth Bruntonboatyard Hotel in Kochi was an experience, we were affected with rain but smiling through was the order of the day. Simple but clean rooms with natural bathroom products available. A beautiful pool area and relaxing surroundings. Fragrant Nature in Munnar was truly marvellous - the staff both in the hotel and especially the restaurant really could not do enough to ensure we had a top stay. We were lucky enough to be treated to an early morning visit to the tea plantations - something not on offer to tourists ordinarily. The Manager arranged transport, he talked through the natural flora, fauna and pointed out birds and wildlife as we walked. The history of the plantations was relayed, all rounded off with a snack and tea in the plantation social space, it was a joyful and emotional experience. Spice Village in Thekkady was our next destination, set amongst beautiful flowers and greenery, the clouds touching the tops of the mountains. A quiet hotel, large airy modern rooms close to the Tiger Sanctuary, we enjoyed a boat trip taking photos of the local wildlife and birds and taking in the fabulous scenery. Also enjoyed two performances in the town, the historic Kathakali martial arts and theatre shows - both exciting and interesting in their own unique way. On to Alleppey where we had a meal and an overnight stay on a houseboat, cruising through the mangroves witnessing local life on the waterways, the rice fields and stunning sunset. Finally, resting in the Marari beach resort and Spa, where ayurvedic treatment and yoga was available or just lounging by the pool taking advantage of the wonderful restaurant food - the spicy soups throughout this trip are a must! An extremely busy schedule, I can appreciate that this is necessary to cover the destinations visited. Photo opportunities galore on this trip - I would highly recommend booking this trip to Kerala through. Thanks to Affordable Luxury Travel in the London office.

“Highly recommend!”

written by Lammy94 on 27/09/2023

Just got back from an 11 day trip in Kerala with my partner and we’re both super happy with the overall experience! Amazing service throughout the holiday and really organised! Drivers were there on the dot, tour guides were super informative. The manager, also came to our hotel to introduce himself to us and explained he would help with any requests we had throughout the trip which we felt was a great gesture! Also, our driver which we had with us for 6 days was the best we could have asked for. He hands down made our experience one to remember, thank you! will for sure be using affordable luxury travel again

“Holiday of lifetime to Kerala ”

written by Pariyanickal on 27/09/2023

This was our first visit to India, but hopefully not our last. We toured Kerala, a state in the south of the country. Organised expertly by Affordable Luxury Travel and executed extremely professionally by our driver. We spent the first 2 days at Fort Kochi, A short drive from the airport , where we went sightseeing, dolphin spotting and our city guide who was excellent. After Fort Kochi he took us through the jungle upton Munnar tea plantation, so much to see on the journey all pointed ou. We stopped for 2 nights at Spice Tree in Munnar, an exceptional setting in the middle of the plantation with brilliant staff and amazing food. Then back down from the mountains too Thekkady Spice Village another amazing experience again excellent food and service, whilst in Thekkady we visited lake Periyar where we were very fortunate to see wild elephants,Bison, Deer a variety of birds during the boating in Periyar lake. After leaving Spice Village we drove us to Alleppey backwaters where we boarded our houseboat for a leisurely cruise around the canals and lakes for 2 days with our own crew and personal chef.Again exceptional service and food. After the houseboats and so much sightseeing and activities, Marari beach resort for 4 nights of chilling beach/pool relaxation all staff here are excellent as to the food and spa treatments. So much to see and do everyday couldn't fit it in this review, Affordable Luxury Travel did an amazing job and our driver, who stays with you throughout, knows every pothole and speed ramp in Kerala , nothing is too much for him who answers your every whim. A five-star rating is deserved for his excellent service.

A well oiled machine!

We are coming to the end of a wonderful holiday in India. As well as the golden triangle, we have visited Rathmanbore and Varanassi. I really cannot fault the Indian side of the operation. From the moment we stepped off the plane our every need was taken care of. Mansi and her team were so delightful and professional. We loved the hotels, the excursions and everything else that came with the package. It was especially helpful to have Mansi at the end of the phone checking that everything was running smoothly. One of the hotels that had been booked by our agent in the UK was far from ' luxury' but Mansi swiftly arranged for us to move to a fabulous one. Obviously we had to pay something towards the upgrade but we were very happy to do so. Nothing was too much trouble for Mansi and her team. The guides that accompanied us on our excursions were highly educated and knowledgeable. This is the first time that we have been on a ' tour' and we can't wait to go on another.

We had a wonderful time touring Kerala

We had a wonderful time in Kerala. In the UK Jazz was able to put together an itinerary that met our needs. We had a seamless pickup at Kochi airport and taken to our hotel. The following morning we met our tour driver /guide Dileep. Dileep was further able to adjust our itinerary to get the best of our experience. All the hotels were well situated and the staff without exception welcoming and helpful. The food was authentic and very tasty. There was a great balance between sightseeing and spending time chilling by the hotel pool. All in all we had a great holiday

You can have a five-star vacation on a backpacker’s budget—if you know where to go. Finance site Money.co.uk analyzed the average costs of luxury travel factors (five-star hotels, Michelin star meals, luxury car hire, and spa hotels) to determine the most affordable luxury travel destinations.

In some of the countries on this list, a five-star hotel costs less than $50 per night, leaving you even more money for that inexpensive Michelin-starred meal.

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand’s capital is the jumping-off point for trips to its famously beautiful islands and beaches but is also a destination in its own right. 5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

Luxury cruises range in price from expensive to outrageously expensive. But the value of high-end ships is clear: For the money, you get more fare inclusions, nicer accommodations, upscale dining and higher space-to-passenger and crew-to-passenger ratios than on big, mass-market ships.

Still, sometimes you want the luxe for less.

You'll never find a cheap luxury cruise, but you can find sailings that are less expensive than others (either when sorting by the total cost or the per-night rate). You might have to compromise on sail dates or take a risk with the weather, but you can get great value by choosing the cruise less traveled.

Here are the five most affordable luxury cruises we could find so you can save a little bit when you sail in style.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Fall Caribbean cruises

affordable luxury travel reviews

Caribbean cruises might be the bread and butter of mass-market cruise lines, but they don't have the same prominence among the itineraries of the luxury lines. Tropical cruises on luxury lines tend to be shorter sailings, taking place in the fall and winter (rather than year-round) and often targeting younger professionals who might not have the time to take two-week vacations.

Combine those factors with a shoulder-season fall travel date (between mid-September and the week before Christmas), and you have yourself a more affordable luxury cruise.

For example, Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' 2024-2025 Caribbean season runs from November through March. The least expensive sailing for the season takes place in early December in the travel lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Fares start at $4,299 per person for a weeklong round-trip cruise from Miami. A similar seven-night sailing costs $4,999 ($700 more) in February.

Shoulder-season Alaska cruises

affordable luxury travel reviews

No matter which cruise line you sail, it's a truth universally acknowledged that the first and last Alaska sailings of the season are the most affordable. Why? Timing and weather.

The Alaska cruise season begins in late April or May and runs through September and occasionally October. These travel dates are often nonstarters for families who wait for the summer school break to take their vacations. Even travelers not bound by school schedules sometimes shy away from these cruises because of the imperfect weather conditions.

In May, temperatures can still be chilly in Alaska, waterways in glacier areas can be clogged with ice, Alaska's famous salmon haven't started to run and bus service at Alaska's famed Denali National Park hasn't yet begun. In September and October, the temperatures start dropping — and the rain keeps falling — and attractions such as Denali begin to close.

All that said, if you're willing to take a risk on the weather and aren't planning a land tour up to Denali, you can score a deal on a high-end Alaska sailing during these off-peak times.

In 2025, a September Alaska cruise on Silversea starts at $4,500 per person on Silver Moon. The same cruise in July starts at $5,900, making the shoulder-season cruise $1,400 less expensive. Even better, May is less rainy than July, so you could experience sunnier days on the more affordable sailing.

Transatlantic crossings

affordable luxury travel reviews

Many travelers choose their cruise for the ports of call. Cruisers are drawn to the destinations, whether they're checking exotic ports off their bucket list or love spending time on the beach. It's no surprise, then, that longer-than-average itineraries with few to no port calls are not warmly embraced by many cruise fans (except for devoted sea-day lovers).

Because many cruise ships regularly reposition between Europe (where they spend the summer) and the Caribbean (where they spend the winter), transatlantic crossings are inevitable. To attract guests, the cruise lines add interesting onboard activities and guest lecturers to the voyage, and they lower prices. If you love relaxing sea days and would revel in spending day after day in the middle of the ocean, an ocean crossing is a surefire way to get a luxury cruise experience for less.

Small, all-inclusive line SeaDream is a solid example of how affordable transatlantic sailings can get. In 2025, SeaDream 1 will sail its last Mediterranean cruise of the season from Barcelona to Malaga, Spain, and cruise prices start at $6,799 for an eight-night cruise. The ship then sails from Malaga across the Atlantic to San Juan, Puerto Rico. That 13-night sailing is five nights longer than the preceding cruise, but its starting price is $3,799 — a $3,000 difference.

Entry-level cabins

affordable luxury travel reviews

As a traveler chasing luxury, you're all about the upgrade. To get a great price on a high-end cruise ship, you might want to reconsider your aversion to booking the cheapest rooms.

Entry-level suites on the nicest ships are not the windowless closets you'll find on some of the mass-market ships. They're spacious cabins with either windows or private balconies and separate sleeping and sitting areas; many have nicely appointed, reasonably sized bathrooms and often walk-in or large closets. You'll get the same personal service, have access to the same gourmet dining and can enjoy the same ship amenities (a spa, a serene pool deck, social lounges and more) as folks in the top suites.

Also, you'll pay less. For example, an entry-level suite on luxury line Seabourn 's Seabourn Encore is a veranda suite measuring 246 to 302 square feet with a 68- to 83-square-foot private balcony. On a seven-night Greece and Turkey cruise departing in June 2025, prices for these rooms start at $5,499 per person. Opt for the next suite level up — a 450-square-foot penthouse suite with a 93- to 103-square-foot balcony — and prices start at $9,299. That's an increase of $3,800, all for a suite you won't spend much time in on this port-intensive itinerary.

Suite enclaves on big ships

affordable luxury travel reviews

Several big-ship cruise lines have entered the luxury travel space with suite enclaves that come with extra amenities, and the options can be affordable by luxury standards. These cruises are ideal for families looking for upscale accommodations combined with robust children's programming or luxury travelers who prefer a more casual vibe or a wealth of entertainment and activity options on board.

Options include Norwegian Cruise Line 's The Haven, Royal Caribbean 's Royal Suite Class and MSC Cruises ' Yacht Club. Travelers who book these suites get VIP treatment compared to their shipmates. They have access to exclusive restaurants, lounges and sun decks; get priority boarding and theater seating; and might even receive more fare inclusions such as drink packages, internet access, gratuities and butler service (depending on the category booked).

Cruise fares in these top suites aren't cheap, but they can be comparatively affordable in two ways. First, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian cruise ships typically sail shorter itineraries than true luxury lines, so you could book a short cruise to spend less on your total vacation cost. Second, while prices are comparable to the luxury lines and can skyrocket when ships start to sell out, you can sail in the ship's top suites for what you'd pay for midlevel on a luxury ship.

For example, you can book an aft-facing penthouse with a large balcony (619 to 668 square feet with a 199- to 248-square-foot balcony) on a seven-night Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Encore for $4,426 per person (including fees) on a February 2026 sailing. It comes with all of NCL's Free at Sea inclusions (drinks, dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credit), as well as the services of a butler and concierge, and access to The Haven's private lounge, restaurant and sun deck.

A weeklong Regent Seven Seas cruise to the Caribbean in February costs $10,349 per person for a 655-square-foot Grandeur Suite (with a 166- to 263-square-foot balcony). The cheapest veranda suite on that sailing starts at $4,999 per person — still more expensive than a suite in Norwegian's The Haven.

Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t like a splash of luxury on their travels now and then?

Affordable luxury travel is one of the cornerstones of flashpacking .

Let me be clear. I’m not talking about ultra-luxury travel with its million-dollar villa rentals, helicopter transfers and private jets. This is about premium travel , valuing comfort over saving money, and buying into the concept that investing in good meals and comfortable accommodation enriches the travel experience.

With planning and a few tricks up your sleeve, affordable luxury travel is well within your reach. Make luxury travel for less a reality with my tried and tested tips and hacks.

What is Luxury Travel?

Whichever way it is applied, luxury is the best of whatever it represents.

Although luxury travel is associated with high-end accommodation and experiences and premium air and train travel, this is not the total sum of its parts. It is sometimes defined around the “ Five Cs ”: Culture, Cuisine, Community, Content and Customization.

Luxury Travel on a Budget: General Tips

1. do your research.

Research, research and yet more research; this is an essential step to finding luxury travel on the cheap. From choosing your destination and planning an itinerary, to booking your flight and accommodation, you need to put in the legwork to get the best bang for your buck.

You can use a travel agent and sometimes that can work to your advantage. But, equally, you can save money by cutting out the middleman and doing this yourself.

And it’s sort of fun.

For inspiration and information, browse  guidebooks  and  travel articles . I often look at itineraries offered by small group tour companies  to give me an idea of what might be feasible.

2. Book ahead

Planning ahead can bring many advantages. If you are in a position to book early, the travel industry will reward you with discounts or other incentives.

This can be the case when  booking a cruise plus you will get be able to pick the right cruise cabin for you. That said, there is also the chance of discounts closer to the departure date.

The price of flights tends to increase as you approach the date of departure.

When it comes to accommodation, by booking early you’ll get first pickings of the exact place you want to stay, rather than settling for your second or third choice.

3. Or bag a last-minute travel deal

Conversely, another way to find luxury travel on a budget is to bag a great last-minute deal. This is a riskier strategy but is an option if you are not bothered about where you go and have some flexibility around dates.

4. Consider using a travel agency

It is only in recent years that I have cottoned on to the advantages of booking luxury travel through a specialist agent. They can often offer special perks such as free breakfast, room upgrades, hotel credit and late checkout.

Take a look at the Global Travel Collection (GTC) or Luxury Holidays and Honeymoons .

5. Sign up for a cashback site

I have friends who have clawed back hundreds of pounds by booking elements of their luxury holiday via a cashback website. The two most common sites are TopCashback and Quidco .

This is how it works. Once you have signed up for the site, simply use this as a portal to connect to the retail site of your choice. After the sale has been completed, a sum of money is yours.

6. Choose your credit card wisely

Savvy luxury travellers have at least one travel rewards credit card in their wallets. Airline credit cards allow you to earn frequent flier points as you spend, and you can also bag bonuses simply for signing up.

I have accumulated tens of thousands of Avios using my British Airways AMEX card at no extra cost to me. These points have paid for BA flights and upgrades on more than one occasion.

I now use this AMEX card for everyday spending to max out rewards.

Just make sure that you repay what you have spent in full each month (the interest cost will dwarf any gain you get). Some of these cards are free; others incur an annual fee.

Your choice of destination is key to luxury travel without breaking the bank.

7. Travel where your money is worth more

I’m talking about the global economy here. If a country’s currency is plummeting, your money will be worth more.

Therefore, keep track of  which currencies are performing well , and which are on the slide, before you travel.

For example; in the wake of the Brexit vote, the UK pound has taken a hammering in the last few years. To cut costs, British travellers could look towards Turkey, Egypt and Japan , which are among the countries where your pound goes furthest .

8. Travel where your money goes further

But it’s not just the currency exchange rate that will determine how cheap your holiday will be. Consider also the  cost of living  in your destination.

For example, the lower cost of living in  Africa ,  Malaysia , Thailand and Poland will allow you to find affordable luxury travel, from deal-breaking five-star hotels to fine dining for a steal.

If you are thinking of travelling to Europe, your money will go further the further east you travel. Think Pristina instead of Paris, Ljubljana instead of  London .

Be a smart traveller and try to choose a country where you can live a luxurious life for less.

9. Avoid more touristy destinations

men standing behind spice stall

To stretch your travel budget, chuck the  Cayman Islands  for Cuba; forsake  Italy  for  Iran . If it’s lakes and mountains that you’re after, visit Slovenia’s Lake Bled instead of Switzerland’s Lake Geneva.

The more popular travel places to visit are also the most expensive, so look instead for emerging or  off-the-beaten-track destinations . In addition to lower hotel prices, the cost of living will also be lower, and they are less likely to be rammed with other travellers.

You can sometimes have a more authentic experience in a less touristy destination and the locals will be less jaded and more welcoming.

10. Travel out of season

Flexibility is one of the keys to successful luxury travel on a budget.

If possible, travel out of peak season. Not only will you save money, but you can also avoid the peak season crowds.

If you have visited the Italian Lakes in the summer you will understand what I am saying!

The flip side of out-of-season travel is unpredictable weather and the closure of some restaurants and attractions.

Affordable Luxury Travel: Getting There & Getting Around

11. find the cheapest flights.

commercial aircraft flying high above clouds

Price is not the sole consideration when flying in a premium cabin.

Not all business-class flights are equal and you need to carefully consider if the on-board service, seat and catering, for example, are worth the premium. That said, price is an important consideration.

READ THIS NEXT:   8 Things to Consider When Choosing a Business Class Flight

Skyscanner   is my go-to platform to search for flights. I like having the ability to filter results by cabin class and to compare the price of flights across an entire month. Skyscanner also supports  multi-city options  in searching for  open-jaw flights .

I also use  Google Flights  to explore flight routings, schedules and fares.

12. Take advantage of flight sales

Over the years, I have saved a packet on business class flights at sales times .

Many airlines hold these at the end of the summer holidays, around Black Friday and in January. It’s worth signing up for a few email lists to keep in the loop.

13. Join a frequent flyer program

Most airlines have  loyalty programs  that allow you to earn points that you can redeem for flights and upgrades. Every flier should sign up for at least one frequent flyer scheme.

Earning and using frequent flyer points is a bit of an art. To get up to speed, check out  Turning Left for Less ,  The Points Guy  or  Head for Points .

It’s not that often you get something for nothing, so enrolling in a loyalty program is a no-brainer!

But don’t be a slave to these airline loyalty schemes.

I started to fall into the trap of a frequent flier program steering my travel plans. It’s very easy to choose a destination based on the accumulation of frequent flier points, and tier points, that determine your status in a loyalty program.

14. Buy a train pass

exterior cover of an interrail pass which is one of train passes in europe

Of course, flying is not the only way to get from A to B.

I am a massive fan of train travel .

Not only is it a more eco-friendly way of transport, but it is also less stressful than boarding a plane and you are usually deposited slap-bang in the centre of town. And that’s without factoring in super scenic journeys such as the  Glacier Express  and  Flam Railway .

The downside of train travel is that point-to-point tickets can be expensive, especially if you buy them at the last minute.

This is where  rail passes can save you a ton of money , notably  using interrail or Eurail . You just need to do your homework.

Luxury Travel Hacks: Accommodation

carved wooden hotel balcony looking over sea and island

I do like a nice bed for the night. Whilst it’s not a deal-breaker, really good or really bad accommodation can impact your travel experience.

Here are some useful tips to find better accommodation for less .

15. Mix and match your accommodation styles

Alternating luxury hotels with budget ones is a great way to save money (and to make swanky hotels affordable).

Even if a budget hotel turns out to be a bit grim, I’ll put up with it if I know that I have a great hotel to look forward to at my next stop.

16. Consider booking directly with the hotel

When I want to stay at a particular hotel, I always start by checking online for the cheapest room rate.

There is more than one way of doing this, but in recent years I have tended to enter the hotel and dates into Google Hotels , which will then generate prices from its partner sites. This gives me a feel for where hotels are clustered and the price bracket I am looking at.

I use  Booking.com   for 80% of my hotel bookings. Many of their competitive room rates allow  free cancellation , which I prefer for flexibility, and their  Genius scheme  offers attractive discounts on selected properties.

However, I will always check if  booking directly with the hotel  is advantageous. They may have a better room rate or offer free upgrades or competitive packages.

Always ensure that the rates they quote are inclusive of taxes and other charges.

17. Join a hotel loyalty scheme

Most chain hotels have  loyalty schemes . Members of these schemes are often entitled to discounts or other perks, and you will also earn loyalty points that can be redeemed against future visits.

18. Think about staying in a new hotel

Whilst a new hotel is a bit of a punt and can suffer from teething problems, you may be able to snap up a great deal through their introductory ‘soft’ opening rates.

19. Stay in a boutique hotel

lobby of a hotel in tarragona spain

I am a big fan of boutique hotels.

Although they have fewer amenities, I like the intimacy and service that often comes with their size. They often have more character, feel less corporate than a 5-star chain hotel, and can cost considerably less.

Ditto guesthouses and bed and breakfasts.

20. Rent an apartment

lounge in apartment with marble floors white furniture and grey futon covered by a red throw

Apartments are usually more affordable than hotels and can be a good choice if you are staying in a destination for more than a few days. For example; I’ve had great experiences staying in apartments from  Tenerife  to  Normandy

Airbnb   is a well-known platform for booking apartments but traditional hotel booking sites, including  Booking.com , also offer an increasing selection of rental properties.

21. Stay out of the centre of town

If you are not sleeping in the centre of town, you will usually get a room for considerably less.

Whilst this clearly has disadvantages, particularly in terms of  safety for solo travellers , don’t rule it out. Just check that transport options are cheap and convenient.

Also, I have found that staying in more residential areas has helped me get a better feel for a place.

READ THIS NEXT: 17 Essential Safety Tips for Travelling Alone

22. Go all-inclusive

I’ll level with you. I am a little uncomfortable with all-inclusive hotels.

There is a danger that you won’t absorb much of the local culture, and that the local economy doesn’t benefit from the tourist dollar. However, they can offer good value and you can travel safely with the knowledge that most of your bills have been paid up-front.

Budget Luxury Travel: Tips for Eating Out

chef holding pasta meal in a white bowl

23. Make lunch your main meal of the day

The next tip for finding affordable luxury travel is for the foodies out there.

If you have your heart set on a top-rank restaurant and your budget won’t stretch to dinner, consider dining there at lunchtime. Many restaurants offer a  fixed-price lunch menu,  which is many times cheaper than their dinner menu. Although the choice may be more limited, the quality should be the same.

Also, consider  eating at the bar . Some restaurants have less expensive bar menus without sacrificing food quality.

24. Avoid tourist-oriented restaurants

Location matters also.

Unless they have been recommended by a local, I avoid restaurants in a city’s main square. Food tends to be overpriced and average at best.

A better experience is usually to be had a few blocks away from the main tourist hub. Better still, head out to less-central neighbourhoods where locals dine and the restaurants pay lower rents.

The Most Important Luxury Travel Tip …

25. splurge in the right places.

Finally, luxury travel on a budget is within your grasp if you know when to splash the cash.

Whilst I will always try to fly business-class long-haul, I cannot see the value in the cost of a business-class ticket for a two-hour flight. Use the price difference to upgrade your hotel room or experience when you arrive at your destination.

If a central part of your trip is relaxing on a beautiful island, a beach-facing room may be a wise investment.

But what if you are going to be dashing from one must-see sight to another on a city break and your hotel room is a place merely to lay your weary head at night? In that case, a premium hotel room is not usually such a wise investment.

In my view, splurging on once-in-a-lifetime experiences is always a good investment.

Whilst I baulked at paying over 90 USD to travel on the Gornergrat railway in Zermatt , seeing the mighty Matterhorn reflected in Riffelsee was an unforgettable experience.

More than one cause for reflection.

Hi has anyone traveled with a London based company called affordable luxury travel? Reviews on trust pilot seem good but I’m always a bit wary of companies that I’ve never heard of. tIA

They are a trading brand under the Moresand Ltd group of travel companies.

ATOL bonded and members of ABTA.

U.K. registered.

https://www.moresand.co.uk/brands

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. They don’t have some magic formula to make luxury cheaper than everyone else pays.

They are not that cheap .. just never heard of them and so many scams around

Tripadvisor staff removed this post at the original author's request.

Thank you. That’s what always puts me off reviews if they tend to follow a formula.. always makes be suspicious but good to know that they are legit. Thank you again

Hi did you use this company ?

Why would you?

What’s wrong with them ?

Posts above suggest they are more expensive than alternatives. If you are not finding that then I’d go ahead and book, unless you can find a company with references from people or places you trust.

But just 20 miles south of Palm Beach and 53 miles north of Miami, there's charming Delray Beach, boasting two miles of pristine shoreline, a vibrant nightlife scene and loads of cultural activity for so much less than you'd spend on a trip to South Florida. Take a walk down Atlantic Avenue , the largest main street in Florida, which is flanked by dozens of art galleries, restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. Stay steps from all the action at the 141-room The Ray , which features tropical modern decor, a rooftop pool, gym, restaurants and bars, and in-room amenities like eucalyptus bed linens, Frette towels and robes, and Byredo bath products.

For high-rollers avoiding the Strip: Laughlin, Nevada

4.  For high-rollers avoiding the Strip: Laughlin, Nevada

Forget the ultra-pricey hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and head 90 minutes south to Laughlin, the “original” Las Vegas, with slightly less glitz and considerably more bargain. With eight resorts totaling about 9,000 rooms, there are plenty of options—most for less than $50 a night. By day, get outdoors and kayak or river cruise along the Colorado River, which runs through the heart of town. By night, live like a high roller with gourmet meals, world-class shows, and casino games. Go big and stay at Aquarius Casino Resort , Laughlin's largest hotel, which offers room and show packages.

For a deal on an all-inclusive: Hawley, Pennsylvania

5.  For a deal on an all-inclusive: Hawley, Pennsylvania

Want an all-inclusive vacation without too much expense? Head to  the Lodge at Woodloch  in the Pocono Mountains. Surrounded by 500 acres of woodlands, the 59-room, adults-only wellness resort offers guests luxurious linens, plush robes and slippers, and rosemary mint bath and shower products. For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

6.  For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

Just five miles from Manhattan, East Rutherford, New Jersey, is unlikely to be top-of-mind when seeking a shopping holiday, but the massive 3-million-square-foot American Dream mall and entertainment center has many of the same designer shops as Los Angeles and New York. The palatial shoppers' paradise offers glitzy and glamorous shopping from designers like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. along with cost-conscious retailers plus one dozen family-friendly attractions, including Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park , the largest indoor theme park in the western hemisphere, Big Snow , North America's only indoor real-snow park, and Skudin Surf , an indoor freshwater wave pool for surfers and wannabe surfers. While there are hotels nearby, soothe aching feet after a day of retail therapy at SoJo Spa Club , nine miles away. Staying overnight at the spa's boutique Hotel SoJo includes entry to the spa and its infinity pool, hydrotherapy pool, heated baths, saunas, and relaxation areas for each day of your stay.

For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

7.  For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

Dreaming of a Hawaiian getaway, but your wallet won't cooperate? Head down to the Conch Republic off Florida's southernmost tip. Connected by the 110-mile Overseas Highway, each island in the 120-mile island chain is a unique piece of paradise. Snorkeling here is magical, particularly at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first underwater preserve in the U.S., which has a coral reef and an 8.5-foot bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ. No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without a walk down Duval Street in Key West. Just around the corner from Duval Street, Simonton Court Historic Inn & Guesthouse is a former cigar factory turned boutique hotel that is an adults-only oasis.

For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

8.  For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

Love Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket but not the prices? Consider Block Island, which boasts just as much New England charm as the two more famous Massachusetts islands, but for far less money. Located just nine miles off Rhode Island, Block Island has 17 miles of beaches punctuated with lighthouses, perfect for a relaxing New England getaway on the island that is 3 miles by 7 miles. Spend the night at Spring House Hotel , the oldest and largest hotel on the island. Built in 1852, the 32-room Victorian-style hotel offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and impeccable hospitality.

For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

9.  For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City is packed with everything you could want on a vacation for a fraction of the cost of other cities. While there's plenty to do indoors like touring the U.S. Mint and seeing how candy is made at Hammond's Candies, it's the outdoors that beckon, including nearby Red Rocks Amphitheater and Mesa Verde National Park and 90-minutes away, Rocky Mountain National Park . Stay at The Maven , a dog-friendly boutique hotel with loft-style rooms in the Dairy Block micro-district. The lively alley behind the hotel is packed with excellent bars and restaurants and the hotel is a treasure trove of art with more than 700 paintings, sculptures, and photographs all from Colorado artists.

For a big city escape with out the big prices: Brooklyn, New York

10.  For a big city escape with out the big prices: Brooklyn, New York

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations, but it's also one of the most expensive. Enjoy iconic Big Apple sights, but save massive amounts of money by staying—and playing—in Brooklyn. Book a room at The William Vale , the only luxury hotel in hipster haven Williamsburg, and you might not even want to leave Brooklyn. Each of the hotel's 183 rooms has a balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views of Manhattan. From catching shows at Brooklyn Bowl or the Brooklyn Academy of Music to dining at one of the borough's nine Michelin-starred restaurants and grabbing drinks at Time Out Market to enjoying soaks, saunas, and spa treatments at cityWell or BATHHOUSE , there's no shortage of living the luxe life in New York City's most populous borough. Bon Voyage!
