Referred to as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always enjoyed an important place in the maritime history of Kerala. Today, it is famous for its boat races, backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha Beach is a popular picnic spot. The pier, which extends out to the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the beach. There is also an old lighthouse nearby which greatly intrigues all visitors. Another delightful experience while in Alappuzha is the houseboat cruise. The houseboats you find in the backwaters of Alappuzha are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. Kettuvallam is a Malayalam word, ‘Kettu’, refers to dwelling structures and ‘Vallom’ means boat. In the olden days, kettuvallam or boat with thatched roof that covers over wooden hulls was used to carry tons of rice and spices.  Of late, houseboats come equipped with all the comforts of a good hotel room including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. An uninterrupted view of life in the backwaters can be enjoyed while staying in a houseboat.

Alappuzha – most still call it Alleppey – is the hub of Kerala's backwaters, home to a vast network of waterways, over a thousand houseboats and an important coir industry. St. Mary's Forane Church

This beautiful church traces its existence back to 835 AD and is known for its events, Friday Liturgy and educational institutions. Currently, the church is a world-renowned center of pilgrimage, where one can know more about the culture and lifestyle of the Christians. This is one of the biggest churches and parishes of the Archeparchy of Changanassery. Currently, the church is known for housing 2500 families and is one of those Alleppey tourist places that are popularly visited by the masses.  The church organizes two feasts or festivals every year. The first one of them is St. Mary’s Feast. Since the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, hence every year on the third Sunday of September, a feast is organized by the Church.  People visit the church on this day and participate in the festival wearing special costumes for the procession and mass. Krishnapuram Palace

It is one of the most popular museums in Alleppey. Built-in the 18th century by the king of Travancore, Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, Krishnapuram Palace is quite popular for its vintage architecture and artistic murals. Alleppey Lighthouse

Famous as the Alappuzha lighthouse,  the Alleppey lighthouse can be spotted from miles away. A humongous tower celebrating the solitude by the coastal strip wearing strips of red and white is how it has best reminisced. The phenomenal tower was first installed in March 1862, almost 148 years ago. St. Andrew's Basilica Arthunkal

The largest shrine of St. Sebastian in the whole world, this church is one of the most popular Alleppey tourist places. The prestigious church was established in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1584, under Father Jacomo Fenicio, who was known to heal people with his touch. It has been renovated many times in history but always it has always stood tall and strong. Edathua Church

This famous church is known for celebrating huge feasts during the month of May. The church is also popular for its Christian and non-Christian pilgrims. The Vicar of this Palli was Father Thoman Olakkapady.  Currently, the church is located close to the Mahatma Gandhi University’s St. Aloysius College which is built and managed by the church. Since the church is located close to the below sea level area, therefore travelers can enjoy agricultural lands and rice farms that are seen separated through the rivers.  The environs here are enchanting, with mud levees being used for separating runs which are nothing less than a highway or street that one would find in New York.  A massive shrine at Edathua is located close by. Pathiramanal, which means “Sands of the Night”, is a small lake island located on the backwaters of Alappuzha in Lake Vembanad. It is a bird watcher’s paradise since it is supposed to hold approximately 91 local species of birds and 50 species of migratory birds. The location of the island is extremely scenic, making it a lovely space to observe birds and the water. Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race

Held in the memory of Jawaharlal Nehru, this boat race is unlike any other boat racing activity you may have seen before. The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, also known as Vallam Kali, is an annual competition that takes place every August on a part of Lake Vembanad. It is one of the cultural highlights of the state, so plan your visit accordingly if it is your desire to see and experience this boat race.  Unlike other boat racing events which have teams of 5 to 10 rowing furiously in silent concentration, this boat race has teams of at least 100 people, usually fishermen, who row together as they sing at the top of their voice. Kayamkulam Lake used to be a lake before the authorities decided to break the bar separating it from the Arabian Sea to build a fishing harbor. As a result, it is now a lagoon. Vijaya Beach Park

Your trip to Kerala is incomplete without visiting at least one of its beaches. Vijaya Beach Park is the place to head to when looking for beach locations in Alleppey. This park is actually a children’s park on Alappuzha Beach managed by the Kerala Municipal Board. Andhakaranazhi Beach

1. Alappuzha Beach

The exotic Alappuzha beach is one of the major attraction. The beach is a famous picnic spot with a children’s park and boating facilities. The old lighthouse and 140 year old pier which extends into the sea is an amazing view. The pier was built by Hugh Crawford in 1862.

2. Mullackal

Mullackal is a Konkani Brahmin settlement built around Alappuzha Town. It is in here the Bhagavathy Temple is located. The main deity of the temple is Goddess Bhagavathi. The Konkani Brahmin resides here are specialises in making sweets.

About a kilometer away from Mullackal is a temple to Mariamman, the twin sister of mullakkal Bhagavathy. Chirappu is the main festival of the temple and during this time there is a fair displaying vessels and many other items. One can purchase this from here.

3. The Alleppey Backwaters

The most attractive feature of Alappuzha is the backwater. One can’t miss a houseboat cruise through this serene backwaters.
