Winner of the fifth season of The X-Factor in 2008, Alexandra Burke (born August 25th, 1988) has become an international star, finding success with her soulful voice.

Hailing from Islington, London, UK, Burke is the daughter of ex-Soul II Soul vocalist Melissa Bell, growing up surrounded by music. At the age of 12, Burke had already reached the final of a BBC talent show, "Star for a Night," losing out to Joss Stone for the top place. Burke decided to pursue a career in music upon leaving school, performing at various clubs whilst touring with Young Voices, a charitable choir raising money for children for Leukemia.

It in fact took two attempts for Burke to realize her talents on The X-Factor, entering the 2005 series of the show but missing out on a mentorship with Louis Walsh, having made it to the last seven of her category. Yet in 2008, Burke shot to victory, being a major contender right from the start. Her rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and duet with Beyoncé helped to beat JLS and Eoghan Quigg to victory, gaining 58 percent of the vote. Her debut single, Cohen's "Hallelujah," became the Christmas number one single in the UK, selling 576,000 copies in the first week, breaking the record for the fastest selling solo female artist.

Burke signed to RCA Records in 2009, for a five-album deal, releasing her debut album, "Overcome," in October of that year. Her debut featured the single, "Bad Boys," featuring Flo Rida, which went on to become an international success, as well as topping the UK SIngles Chart. Five more singles followed, all finding commercial success.

Her second effort, 2012's "Heartbreak on Hold," displayed Burke's desire to move towards a more raunchy, dirty sound, which featured the singles "Elephant" and "Let it Go," with the former peaking at number three in the UK charts. This was followed by the 2013 EP, "#NewRules," which featured a cover of Coldplay's "Fix You." In 2014, Burke lent her talents to musical theatre, performing the lead role of Rachel Marron in the West End musical, "The Bodyguard."

It is somewhat unclear as to whether winning the X Factor is a blessing or a curse. Many have taken the title and fallen so soon after, their careers failing to take off into anything substantial, other than that expected Christmas number one.

Whilst this may have been the fate of many of her X Factor peers, Alexandra Burke has proved herself to be one of the most successful winners of the show and since winning the show in 2008. Throughout her time on the show, it was clear that Burke had the talent and potential to compete with some of the most well-known and respected British females on the scene. You will remember that duet with Beyonce on "Listen", that made her the winner of that series by a clear mile.

Seeing Alexandra Burke live on the All Night Long Tour back in 2011 at London's Hammersmith Apollo was further evidence that she was a worthy winner of the X Factor and deserved respect as an artist. Burke sang her way through a set of hits, including number one singles Bad Boys, All Night Long, Start Without You and of course, Hallelujah.

Her voice is incredibly soulful and there was not one point during the entire set that anyone in the audience could've been bored. The energy never slumped and the performance was pretty faultless.

Alexandra Burke seems to have escaped the curse of winning a show like the X Factor and rightly so because she is extremely talented, so much so that she is now playing the lead role in The Bodyguard musical, a challenge even for the most powerful of singers. If you get a chance to see her live, I would really recommend it.

The Bodyguard tour full cast joining Alexandra Burke announced

The tour kicks off next month in Glasgow

Full casting has been announced for the upcoming UK and Ireland tour of The Bodyguard , which opens in Glasgow next month.

Joining the previously announced Alexandra Burke as Rachel Marron will be Benoît Maréchal ( Spiral ) as Frank Farmer, Micha Richardson ( Legally Blonde ) as Nicki Marron, Peter Landi ( This House ) as Bill Devaney, Craig Berry ( Mamma Mia! ) as Tony, Gary Turner ( Emmerdale ) as Sy Spector, Phil Atkinson ( Little Shop of Horrors ) as The Stalker and Simon Cotton ( Clockwork Orange ) as Ray Court. At certain performances, the role of Rachel Marron will be played by Carole Stennett ( King ).

The rest of the company includes Rosie Cava-Beale, Callum Clack, Myles Cork, Kerry Crozier, Sia Dauda, Gustav Die, Chris Edgerley, James Lee Harris, Holly Liburd, Jack Loy, Hannah Millichamp, Helen Parsons, Daniil Shmidt, Jessica Simmons, Yiota Theo and Michael Wade Peters.

The hit musical, which is based on the film of the same name starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, follows a secret service agent-turned-bodyguard Frank Farmer, who is hired to protect singer Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. The show includes classic tunes such as "Queen of the Night", "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "I Will Always Love You"

Burke (currently appearing in Chicago in the West End) returns to the role of Marron after playing the role in London and on a 2015/16 UK tour. The production had its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in 2012, where it was nominated for four Olivier Awards.

The new UK tour will open at Glasgow Theatre Royal on 3 December before touring to Hull, Southend, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Cardiff, Norwich, Canterbury, Southampton, Nottingham and Wolverhampton.

Producers, Michael Harrison and David Ian have announced that the international smash hit production of the award-winning musical The Bodyguard is back! The Bodyguard UK Tour opens at the Glasgow Theatre Royal on 3 December 2018.

Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros. film, which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, the musical of The Bodyguard was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and Best Set Design and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards.

Alexandra Burke returns to the role of Rachel Marron for The Bodyguard Uk Tour following her triumphant run in the show in both the West End and the subsequent sell-out 2015/2016 tour. She first rose to fame after winning the fifth series of The X Factor and her debut number one single Hallelujah sold over one million copies in the UK, a first for a British female soloist. She most recently appeared as ‘Svetlana’ in “Chess” at the London Coliseum and will soon appear as ‘Roxie’ in “Chicago” at the West End’s Phoenix Theatre. Last year she reached the final of “Strictly Come Dancing”. Her other theatre credits include ‘Deloris Van Cartier’ in the national tour of the musical “Sister Act”.

Alexandra Burke will not be performing the role of Rachel Marron at all shows. Patrons should check before booking.

From 12 November 2019, joining Alexandra Burke as Rachel Marron will be, Ben Lewis as Frank Farmer, Emmy Willow as Nicki Marron and Neil Reidman as Bill Devaney. Continuing in the show will be Craig Berry as Tony, Gary Turner as Sy Spector, Phil Atkinson as The Stalker and Simon Cotton as Ray Court. At certain performances the role of Rachel Marron will be played by Jennlee Shallow. Tour schedule below.

Moscow Tour Report- Part 2: The Untold Story of the Cargo’s Journey

Often, when we see a performance by an ensemble from abroad, we think of how far the musicians have traveled to be there, and what that must be like. But sometimes we don’t realize just how big of an undertaking it is to transport an entire orchestra -and their instruments- to another continent. Below, Violinist Alexandra Adkins describes the untold story of the cargo’s journey.

Our orchestra on tour is accompanied by lots of cargo; instrument shipping trunks, wardrobe trunks, special chairs and so on. The musicians were fortunate to head to Moscow Tuesday on a 12 hour nonstop flight, but our cargo had a more extensive journey. According to stage manager Donald Ray Jackson, it is a four day process that began immediately following the Ima Hogg performance on June 2nd. The symphony truck was loaded up that night and headed for IAH, where Sunday morning he and assistant stage manager Kelly Morgan began building seven container pallets from the various instrument and wardrobe trunks. It is a complicated puzzle to make the pallets the size that will fit in the cargo hold of a passenger plane. Every piece is X- rayed before loading. Donald Ray and Kelly travel with our shipment every step of the way. Our cargo arrived Monday afternoon in London, where it was offloaded and transferred to a climate controlled warehouse until the Moscow flight Tuesday morning. Due to a size issue with one of our containers, some of our cargo was delayed, thus everything did not arrive in Moscow until 3:00 AM Wednesday morning. Clearing Russian customs, disassembling the pallets and loading up trucks for transport to Moscow’s Hall of Columns took the next 18 hours, and finally at 11:30 PM Wednesday night our four very sleep deprived Houston stage crew members began the two hour load in to the hall– assisted by Russian crew– so that our instruments would be available for individual practice on Thursday morning. Donald Ray and Kelly are now catching up on their ZZZ’s in the subway, on the bus, and anywhere else they can find a quiet corner!
