¡Bienvenidos a Espana! A truly cosmopolitan city, Madrid is the gateway to Spain’s arts and culture, tantalising cuisine and diverse architecture.

Upon arrival at Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), take your private transfer to your hotel for check-in, then spend the day at your leisure exploring Spain’s thriving capital. Stroll the elegant boulevards and manicured parks, then live the Spanish life and step into one of the vibrant bars for ‘la hora del vermut’ or Vermouth Hour.

This evening, meet your tour director and fellow travellers at your hotel for a briefing on the exciting adventure come.

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel, then set out for a morning tour of this thriving city. From the busy squares of Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa to the storied streets of Barrio de Moreria and the Habsburg neighbourhood and the neoclassical Fountain of Neptune, discover the living history of this bustling metropolis with the direction of your expert local guide.

After a morning of cultural immersion, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. This evening, come together as a group for a welcome dinner at a local tapas restaurant and sample the fragrant flavours and piquant spices of Spanish cuisine.

Bid farewell to magical Madrid as you travel to the university town of Salamanca. Tucked away among rolling hills, this medieval town is home to one of the oldest operating universities in the world.

With free time to explore, you can immerse yourself in its architectural and artistic wealth, from the stained-glass atrium of the Casa Lis art museum to the shell-covered walls of Casa de las Conchas.

Rise, shine and board your private luxury coach as you cross the border to picturesque Portugal. Stop first at serene Pinhao on the banks of the Douro River, where you’ll visit the local vineyards and centenary cellars that have earned Pinhao its place in the wine world. Explore the complex local blends on a special tasting experience and relish a delicious lunch made with local produce.

Continue to Porto, one of Europe’s oldest towns, and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Opt to stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed streets, visit the impressive Casa da Música concert hall or sample a hearty francesinha (toasted sandwich) – a Porto specialty.

Wake for a day of discovery and uncover Porto on a guided tour. Admire the fine craftsmanship of Porto Cathedral, the elaborate Stock Exchange Palace and the meticulous interior of Igreja de Santa Clara church.

Later, cruise down the peaceful waters of the Douro River. Watch as the twin cities of Porto and Gaia pass by on opposite banks, and gaze in awe at Porto’s countless stunning bridges.

Back on land, spend your evening freely, exploring the romantic streets and maybe choosing to try a glass of the city’s famous port wine.

Optional activities:

  • Guimaraes excursion (surcharges apply).

Be sure to fuel up at breakfast before embarking on the day’s adventure. Your first stop is Aveiro, known as the ‘Portuguese Venice’. See just why the city has earned this reputation as you cruise along the beautiful canals aboard a moliceiro boat, named for the algae they once harvested along the Ria de Aveiro.

Spend some time wandering at your leisure, exploring the old Beira Mar neighbourhood and the Mercado do Peixe – Aveiro’s bustling fish market.

Travel onward to Coimbra, the birthplace of fado – a popular style of traditional Portuguese music. With your abundant free time, you may choose to explore the historic streets climbing up from the banks of the Rio Mondego. Another famed university town, Coimbra’s buildings date back to the 12th century, including the Romanesque wonder of Se Velha Cathedral.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then set your sights on the idyllic towns of the Portuguese countryside. Start your day in historic Tomar, former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, where you can see the Convent of Christ. This Gothic and Manueline masterpiece was once a 12th-century Templar stronghold and took over five centuries to complete.

Continue to the picturesque fishing town of Nazare, famed for its world-class surfing. Spend your free time appreciating the rolling Atlantic at North Beach, where thrill-seekers try their luck among gargantuan waves averaging 15 metres high.

Rounding out the day is peaceful Obidos. Wander freely through this medieval town and marvel at the superbly preserved castle and 16th-century aqueduct.

Later, arrive in the vibrant city of Lisbon, where you can get a taste of its beloved architecture, delicious seafood and thriving nightlife.

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the streets of Lisbon on a morning sightseeing tour. Traverse the main squares and avenues, passing Belem Tower and the serene Jeronimos Monastery, as well as the imposing Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoverers) on the northern bank of the Tagus River and the grand Marquis of Pombal Square.

The rest of the afternoon will be free to wander through the city streets or perhaps visit the Alfama Quarter, the oldest and most historical part of Portugal's capital.

This evening, enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner and fado performance at one of the oldest venues in the city.

Tuck into breakfast before saying goodbye to Portugal as you travel by private coach across the border to Merida. Capital of the western Spanish region of Extremadura, Merida’s famed Roman ruins date back to the 1st century BCE.

Spend time exploring the historic remains of this ancient colony and stand at the centre of the miraculously preserved Roman Theatre.

Continue onward to Seville – the vibrant Andalusian capital - to enjoy the evening at your leisure. Walk the city’s storied streets and soak up extraordinary architecture and the vibrant Spanish soul.

Optional Activity:

  • Las Setas de Sevilla evening city tour (surcharges apply).

Let your expert guide unlock the wonders of romantic Seville as you navigate the maze of narrow, tree-lined streets and blooming courtyards of Santa Cruz – the city’s picture-perfect Jewish Quarter. Lose yourself in the complex blend of Christian and Moorish architecture, epitomised by the Mudejar style of the grand palace of Real Alcazar.

Spend your afternoon meandering through the bright barrio or opt to join a trip to the southern city of Jerez de la Frontera. Built around an 11th-century Moorish fortress, this sun-kissed spot is known globally as the namesake of sherry wine or ‘jerez’ as well as its centuries-old equestrian tradition (surcharges apply).

  • Jerez de la Frontera excursion with sherry tasting (surcharges apply).

Fill up with a buffet breakfast at your hotel, then hit the road on your way to Cordoba. Founded in the 2nd century BCE, this historically Roman city has a fascinating history of diverse influences converging in a cosmopolitan blend of architecture and culture.

Visit the wonderfully unique Mezquita – a captivating mosque-turned-cathedral that stands as testament to the compounding innovations of Islamic and Christian architects dating back to the 8th century. Over the next millennium, the complex would grow and evolve in unexpected ways, tied to the particular cultural exchange of Spain’s southern reaches. The enormous mosque is an intricately constructed masterpiece of striped arches and wide halls, while the 16th-century cathedral at its heart tells the story of a changing Spain.

Depart for a scenic journey through Spanish olive groves, learning how olive oil is produced from the olive treem then check in to your hotel in Granada upon arrival. In the evening, convene with your fellow adventurers for an unforgettable traditional flamenco show over a delicious Spanish dinner.

Prepare for the day with a hearty breakfast, then make your way to the jaw-dropping Alhambra. This expansive hilltop fortress complex remains one of the most renowned examples of Islamic architecture in the world. Listen as your guide highlights the intricately carved Moorish architecture, punctuated by signs of the Spanish Renaissance in its layered distillation of a history shrouded in mystery.

Spend your afternoon at leisure, or choose to join an optional walking tour through the Albaicin district and chart the transition of Moorish design to Christian construction as you marvel at the beautiful mosques, churches and artisan shops and visit a celebrated pastry and teashop (surcharges apply).

  • Albaicin neighbourhood walk (surcharges apply).

Depart glorious Granada and travel back to Madrid, stopping along the way at the ‘Imperial City’ of Toledo. Spectacularly poised overlooking the Rio Tajo, Toledo’s reputation as the ‘city of three cultures’ dates back to the Middle Ages. Today, let your guide dig up the past on a tour of the historic narrow streets, where you can spot countless mosques, Gothic cathedrals and Sephardic synagogues.

Continue to Madrid and check in at your hotel, then spend an evening of cultural exchange with your group over another sumptuous Spanish meal.

Rise and shine for a new day and a new destination! Take your private transfer to Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) for a flight to beautiful Casablanca, Morocco. Famed for its place in Hollywood movie history, Casablanca’s vibrant mix of cultural influences span from traditional Moorish to French colonial, as seen in its intricate architecture.

Once you’ve transferred to your hotel, enjoy the afternoon as you please, before meeting up for a hearty dinner at your hotel.

A full day of wonderous sights awaits, starting with a guided city tour through the bustling streets of Casablanca. Visit Anfa Boulevard and the historic United Nations Square, then witness the breathtaking Hassan II Mosque – one of the largest mosques in the world. Partially suspended above the sea and fitted with an enormous retractable roof that opens to beaming sunlight on special days of worship, this feat of architecture – with its hand-carved stone and detailed marble floor – pays tribute to the former King of Morocco in painstaking detail.

Farewell Casablanca and set out for Fes, stopping along the way in Rabat – capital of Morocco with Berber fortifications dating back to the 12th century. See the Royal Palace and the regal Mausoleum of Mohammed V, then peer up at the commanding minaret of Hassan Tower.

Continue on your way until you reach the sprawling city of Fes. Round out your day with a mouthwatering Moorish welcome dinner.

This morning, step back in time as you venture through Fes’ medieval Medina. A glass of mint tea or a handful of sweet Moroccan dates might be the fuel you need as you admire the varied sizes and designs of the Seven Gates of the Royal Palace, the ornate gate of Bab Bou Jeloud and the historic Jewish Quarter.

Spend the afternoon at your leisure. Gaze upon mesmerising mosaic fountains and breathe in alluring spices as you pass aromatic food stands offering bowls of earthy harira soups and lamb sausages stuffed with paprika.

Return to your hotel for dinner and a restful evening.

Today, travel beyond the walls of Fes and reach Meknes – known as the ‘Versailles of Morocco’. Admire the great gate of Bab el Mansour and gaze upon the colourful tiles of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Continue to the Roman ruins of Volubilis – an archaeological site in the Jebel Zerhoun plains. Walk through the historic fortifications, known for their lovely bloom of delicate wildflowers in the summer.

Return to Fes for a well-earned meal at your hotel.

Depart Fes and travel through the Middle Atlas mountains to Erfoud, where you’ll transfer to your 4WD transport and head to your desert escape in Merzouga. Scale the magnificent rose-gold waves of sand as they sweep up from the rocky plains at the fringes of the Sahara.

Check into your luxury desert camp, then settle in for a traditional Berber meal by the campfire. Tilt your head back and drink in the vast tapestry of dazzling stars above that cloak the sky like diamonds.

Watch the sunrise over the golden sands and savour a refreshing breakfast, then set off through glorious Todra Gorge. Winding along the babbling river, this jaw-dropping road carves a path through a 300-metre-deep break in the limestone cliff walls.

Drive on through the Valley of Roses and pass Kelaat M’Gouna, where thousands of Berbers travel for the annual Rose Festival. This springtime celebration honours the fragrant harvest and production of treasured rose water with parades and dancing.

Follow the dramatic ‘Road of 1000 Kasbahs’ and wind your way past mud-brick forts, spotting historic kasbahs and fortified villages in the resonant silence of the mountains. Continue to Ouarzazate and check in at your hotel for the evening.

Wake and seize the day with a visit to magnificent Kasbah Taourirt – a richly decorated palace that stood as the former residence of the Pasha of Marrakech.

Unearth almost a thousand years of history as you travel to the fortified ksar of Ait Benhaddou. Beyond its striking beauty and uniquely Moroccan clay architecture, this town built into a hill is a favourite location for Hollywood filmmakers, playing host to epic productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Later, venture through the High Atlas mountain range and on to Marrakech.

Your day begins with a guided tour of colourful Marrakech. Make your way to Koutoubia Mosque and its decorative minaret – considered one of the world’s greatest minarets and 'sister' to the Giralda in Seville.

Visit the royal necropolis of the Saadian Tombs, then head to the famed Jemaa el-Fnaa – the main square of Marrakech. Perpetually abuzz with activity, this lively square is known for its excellent people-watching and eye-catching street performers.

Mark your last Moroccan night with a bountiful farewell dinner.

Even the best adventures must come to an end. Enjoy one last breakfast at your hotel, then take your private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) where your whirlwind journey concludes.

Madrid, Andalusia, Morocco and Lisbon Tour

Madrid, Andalusia, Morocco and Lisbon

I took this trip with my family of 4 with 2 girls 10 and 12 at the end of March which is a good time to go. We had a great time. I was a bit worried about Morocco but it turned out to be very safe and the conditions of the hotels are excellant. I would recommend this trip for people who want to see Morocco. You will have better time if you can walk reasonably well. Sometimes we register about 20,000 steps a day. The meals are great. We felt safe the whole time with the guide. If you take this trip, going to the Sahara desert and riding the camel is a must! Surprisingly, we enjoyed the smaller places like Fes and near the desert than places like Casablanca or Rabat. If you just see Tangier, then you really have not seen Morocco.

Tour Radar and Destination Spain did not advise at any time that neither of them were actually the tour operators. As a result of this we were very close to not being picked up at all as there was a mix up with paperwork and we had no idea it was a different company. We will not go through a third party again. In saying that the actual tour itself was good. Guides were great, accommodation was excellent. Well done Julia Tours.

Andalucia & Morocco Tour

Overall a good value and strong itinerary. Friendly competent guides and local experts- especially in Côrdoba, Granada, and Toledo. Some of the hand-offs between guides during regional transitions were altogether lacking, primarily from Morocco back to Spain. It would have been nice if the Moroccan tour company Mundinmaroc had substituted an excursion to Chafchouen from the first day in Tangier instead of Meknes- which is presently largely inaccessible due to renovations. It was an unpleasant surprise having to tip each performance group at the optional handsomely priced dinner show in Fes. Our tour through Medina left of little freedom of choice on where and with whom to shop. Separately, please considered including gratuities in the fixed price to spare guests from being unexpectedly taxed and distracted or better prepare guests in advance. Many of the hotels and meals were excellent. On our trip, the accomodations in Fes which has a very striking lobby and pools, was unacceptable (we experienced no to limited access to in-room hot water and internet- including a room change. The hotel hasunsecure and spottyl internet and unreliable electricity throughout property. We witnessed multiple altercations between staff and customers. It was problematic that hotel did not accept credit cards for in restaurant and incidental purchases and had no ATM. The in-house "bank desk" offered significantly poor exchange rates. Most of the amenities at this property were limited or all together shuttered. It suffered some grounds maintenance issues- trash, wear, undisposed dead birds, weeds, deteriorating hardscape) the sum experience being unacceptable. The shuttle service from Tangier to Fes was led by a very friendly and knowledgeable local driver who was impressively equally competent in multiple languages. The shuttle van however us under sized for our group especially for the long drive. The route took us through some very scenic seaside vistas which would have made for a nice lunch had we known not to eat on the ferry over. A brief stop for photos amongst the sunflower fields would have made for a memorable experience. It also went through some very rough intensely trafficked, areas. We had the misfortune of serious mechanical problems on our return ferry back to Terrifa from Tangier resulting in violent turbulence causing many if not most passengers to suffer significant motion sickness. While this was clearly not in our guide's purview she made no effort to check on tour participants, offer resources to ailing guests, neither leading us thru barkation nor from debarkation through customs to our receiving guide. Fortunately our previous outgoing guide had done such a great job we were at least familiar with the route back. Beyond Morocco… The excursion in Córdoba was was spectacular, the hotel sub par, the dinner awful with surly dinner attendants. We took a self guided walking tour back to the illuminated Roman Bridge at night which seems could have been a very nice addition to the itinerary. Advance communication with accommodation details, available excursions, suggested sites to explore indepently, and advance notice on having small bills and lots of 5 Dirham coins in Morocco would have been helpful. It also would have been nice if the first guided had contacted us on the first day with an introduction and instructions on how to locate our group amongst the several tour companies departing at the same time and look cation in Lisbon. A running communication from VPT during guide transitions with an introduction, photo, and contact info would have been beneficial. The final drop off was also a little abrupt. We were fortunate to be familiar with the city of Madrid and ended up helping several somewhat stunned guests make their way to their next destination. We did enjoy ourselves, met many wonderful people from across the globe, and got experience some of the worlds greatest cultural and architectural sites all for a very fair price. Thank you.

18-Day Tour to Portugal, Andalusia and Morocco from Madrid

Excellent 18 day tour of Lisbon,Porto,Seville,Cordoba, Granada,Toledo,Salamanca,Costa delSol, Marrakesh,Casablanca,Meknes, Fez and more. Fascinating places made more fascinating by the excellent multilingual guides in all the cities we visited. Their knowledge and communication skills were great as was the overall organisation of the whole tour. Must give a shout out to Carmen and Lorenzo our guide and bus driver in Spain and Portugal. Our bus was always clean and cool until the ac failed so didn't get the chance to say thanks and farewell to Lorenzo as he had to take the bus back to Madrid to get the ac repaired.. The hotels were all 4* and were clean and comfortable. A great way to see multiple destinations but not a lot of time could be spent in each place.as a full itinerary. Tour Radar and Julia Tours Excellent!

VPT Tours was exceptional. Rodrigo in the Madrid office is a first class professional in his customer service. Knowledgeable. Patient.Kind. The best! This tour was designed and delivered with vision. This includes first class drivers and transport. Major cities have guided tours that are fascinating and all delivered by locals. The accommodations were also very good and included 1-2 meals a day. Each day gave time to explore, sit on a beach, time for ease. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically endorse this tour and VPT Tours.

What people love about spain, portugal and morocco tours in october.

We signed up for an English tour and were put on an English/Spanish Tour. The whole bus was Spanish speaking people with only 4 of us English. Our first Tour Guide Alex was horrible. He totally forgot us 4 English speaking Customers. We had to beg and remind him constantly to give us info. When he did we got a very very watered down version. All the other Tour Guides were Great: Mohamed in Morocco and Felipe back in Spain. Alex actually put a Very bad taste in our mouths for Julia travel. The tour itself was Awesome and Most Amazing!
Wonderful experience, both CEOs were excellent. It was a nicely paced itinerary which went to more of the places I wanted to go than any other tour company

Upon your arrival at Lisbon Airport, a warm welcome awaits you. Our driver will be standing by to whisk you off to your hotel. After a long flight, the remainder of the day is left open for you to settle in, relax, or explore the surrounding areas at your own pace.

As evening falls, your local guide will arrive to lead you on a culinary adventure through Lisbon’s thriving food and wine scene. The journey starts near Rossio Plaza, the heart of Lisbon, where you’ll immerse yourself in the city’s iconic café culture. Here, you’ll get your first taste of Portugal with delicious codfish cakes – a beloved staple of the local cuisine.

The tour continues to the vibrant Bairro Alto district, a neighborhood renowned for its bustling nightlife and trendy wine bars. Here, you’ll sample the local white wine, appreciating its unique bouquet and flavor profiles.

As the evening progresses, you’ll venture towards Castle Hill, a prominent landmark offering panoramic views of the city. Amidst this stunning backdrop, delight in a sampling of Lisbon’s finest sausages and cheeses, all perfectly paired with a robust glass of port, Portugal’s celebrated fortified wine.

The culinary journey culminates at one of Lisbon’s traditional restaurants, where you’ll savor a gourmet meal. Here, authentic flavors and innovative culinary techniques create an unforgettable dining experience that beautifully showcases Portugal’s gastronomic heritage.

Day 2: Experiencing the Arrabida Wine Trail

Arrábida Local Winery, Portugal

Begin your day meeting your driver in the hotel lobby, prepared to embark on an exciting journey along the Tagus River through the lush and verdant landscapes of the Arrabida wine region.

Marvel at the breathtaking vistas of sprawling vineyards, interspersed with majestic cork and olive trees – the very essence of this region’s abundant natural beauty.

Your first destination is an exquisite, family-owned winery in Arrabida Park’s heart. Here, the family’s passion for winemaking shines through as you taste the local vintages, each bottle telling the story of the land from which it was born.

As you ascend to the park’s highest point, prepare for the jaw-dropping panorama of the endless Atlantic Ocean that unfolds before you. Drink in the serenity of the view, feeling the gentle breeze and embracing the tranquility of the surroundings.

Next, the sandy shores of Portinho da Arrabida beach beckon. Here, time will be allocated for a walk along the beach, allowing you to revel in the simple beauty of the crystal-clear waters kissing the sandy shoreline.

Lunch awaits in the picturesque Sesimbra fishing village, where fresh, locally sourced seafood is the star of the show. This dining experience offers an authentic taste of the traditional Portuguese coastal lifestyle.

Your enriching journey through the heart of Arrabida culminates with a visit to a wine cellar in Azeitao. This charming town is famous for its wine production, and the cellar visit offers one last chance to deepen your appreciation for the region’s wine heritage before returning to Lisbon.

Day 3: Unveiling the Mysteries of Sevilla

external shot of Plaza De Espana, Seville,

Embark on a new adventure as you meet your driver for a transfer to Lisbon Airport, from where you will catch a short flight to the captivating city of Sevilla. Upon arrival, another driver will be awaiting your arrival to safely transport you to your hotel, where you can settle in and rest for the upcoming exploration.

While the day is yours to spend at leisure, we recommend you soak up the local atmosphere, sample some local cuisine, or discover the charming nooks and crannies of the city at your own pace.

In the afternoon, your guide will introduce you to a unique way of experiencing Sevilla – a bike tour that promises to cover the city’s most remarkable sights. The journey commences at the city walls, where the ancient stones echo tales of Sevilla’s historical past.

Pedal your way through the serene Murillo Gardens, making several stops in the old Jewish Quarters, Barrio Santa Cruz, which once served as the backdrop to the famous opera “Carmen.” Immerse yourself in the captivating tales of the area, rich in culture and history.

As your tour progresses, you’ll visit the enchanting Plaza de España and the Alcazar fortress, a remarkable site known worldwide for its appearance in the television series, Game of Thrones. The majesty of the Cathedral and the grandeur of the Giralda prayer tower stand as testaments to Sevilla’s architectural brilliance and deep-rooted spirituality.

As your cycling adventure concludes, find yourself at the Tower of Gold, stationed on the river bank. From here, embark on a leisurely cruise along the Guadalquivir River, a perfect way to end the day as you take in the riverside beauty of Sevilla at a tranquil pace.

Day 4: A Journey through Time: White Villages & Ronda

Puente Nuevo in Ronda, Andalucía

Begin the day with your driver in the hotel lobby, from where you’ll be driven south of Sevilla and into the mesmerizing mountainous region. This day’s expedition takes you on a journey into Spain’s historical heartland, where traditional village life perseveres as it has for thousands of years.

Our first destination is Zahara de la Sierra, steeped in rich history and legendary tales. Known as the birthplace of Arab noblemen, brave conquistadors, and notorious bandits, this village promises to enthrall you with its captivating past. Here, you can immerse yourself in the charming botanical garden and amble through its steep, winding streets, absorbing the atmosphere of times gone by. Your Zahara exploration is capped off with a visit to an olive mill, where you’ll witness the age-old process of olive oil production and taste the fresh, unadulterated olive oil.

From Zahara, the journey proceeds to the quaint village of Grazalema. Nestled within a natural park, Grazalema offers a chance for easy hiking along a serene stream that begins in the town itself. This is a perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature and marvel at the surrounding scenic beauty.

Just before lunch, you’ll reach a family-owned countryside winery on the outskirts of Ronda, where you can tour the vineyards and sample their fine wines. This culinary detour sets the mood for a hearty lunch, preparing you for the afternoon exploration of Ronda.

Known as the birthplace of bullfighting, Ronda is a city teeming with history and culture. Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to go inside the city’s bullring and step into the matador’s shoes, feeling the thrill of this ancient sport. Your tour continues with a visit to the New Bridge, a majestic structure that spans a deep gorge and separates the New and Old Quarters of Ronda.

Once across the bridge, your guide will lead you through cobblestone streets, taking you into the venerable Collegiate Church and the medieval palace of Don Bosco, where you can appreciate the architectural grandeur of Ronda’s past. As the sun sets, return to Sevilla, enriched by the day’s journey through the pages of Spain’s history.

Your day starts with a comfortable drive from Sevilla to the historic city of Córdoba. Known for its rich cultural tapestry, Córdoba was once the beacon of advanced European civilization, a meeting point of different cultures and religions, and a symbol of peaceful coexistence.

Upon arrival in Córdoba, meet your local guide near the city’s jewel – the stunning Mosque-Cathedral. As you step into this architectural marvel, you’ll be transported back in time, learning about the sultans and commoners who contributed to its creation together. Its grand arches, intricate mosaics, and unique combination of Islamic and Christian influences make it a must-visit site.

After exploring the Mosque-Cathedral, let your guide lead you through the narrow, winding streets of the Jewish Quarters. This area is famous for its traditional jewelers and is characterized by charming whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant red gardenias. Your guide will shed light on the historical significance of this area, explaining why the Jews lived in such close quarters and giving insight into their unique customs and traditions.

End your time in Córdoba with a visit to one of Spain’s few remaining synagogues, a testament to the country’s Sephardic Jewish history. After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to further explore Córdoba at your leisure. You might wish to enjoy some local cuisine, visit more historic sites, or soak in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Once your exploration of Córdoba is complete, rejoin your driver to continue your journey towards Granada. Day 7: Granada - Exploring the Timeless Elegance of Alhambra

Your day commences at the gates of the Alhambra, the world-renowned gem of Moorish architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide will transport you back to the 13th century as you walk through the sprawling complex that once served as the opulent residence of royalty.

Discover the Gardens of Paradise, designed with meticulous precision and lush greenery that embodies the Islamic concept of heaven. Explore the Alcazar Fortress, a bastion with panoramic views of Granada and beyond. The true highlight, however, will be the Nasrid Palaces, an exquisite tapestry of intricate tilework, graceful arches, and serene courtyards that exhibit the pinnacle of Islamic art and architecture.

After your morning tour, take a break to savor the unique flavors of Granada in the city center. Perhaps try local tapas on the bustling Plaza Nueva, or unwind with a traditional Arab bath experience in Plaza Santa Ana, an authentic slice of Andalusian life.

In the late afternoon, embark on a unique Segway tour, traversing the steep, cobblestoned paths of Albaicin and Sacromonte Quarters. Albaicin, the old Muslim quarter, charms with its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses, while Sacromonte is known for its intriguing cave dwellings and vibrant flamenco scene. Start your Moroccan journey with a tour of the iconic Hassan II Mosque, an architectural masterpiece that is one of the largest mosques in the world. Admire the intricate detailing of the interiors and the grandeur of its towering minaret that dominates Casablanca’s skyline.

Afterward, you will drive to Fez, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual center. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and rest for the exciting exploration that lies ahead.

Tanneries in Fez, Morocco

Under the guidance of your expert local guide, you’ll venture into various Islamic schools, such as Bou Inania and El Attarine Madrasa. Be amazed by their preserved intricate stucco and cedar engravings, a testament to the city’s glorious past.

The sensory journey continues with a visit to the famed Fez tanneries. The scent of the dyes will likely reach you before you spot the vibrant spectacle of workers treating and hand-dyeing skins in a rainbow of colors.

Later, find serenity in Nejjarine Square. Here, rest and relish a refreshing mint tea on the roof terrace of Nejjarine Foundouk. This 18th-century caravanserai, now a woodwork museum, required six years of meticulous renovation and is a testament to Fez’s rich history.

In Fez, each corner unfurls a new secret and transports you back to the age of explorers like Ibn Battuta and Leo Africanus. While the city may seem like a complex maze at times, these very surprises and enchanting encounters make exploring Fez a captivating adventure.

Day 10: From Fez to Marrakech, via the Historic Rabat

Spain, Portugal & Morocco

24 days | country hopping in europe’s west on a coastal and cultural adventure.

Group of Intrepid travellers laughing with city view in Lisbon, Portugal

Colour and charisma in some of Europe’s hotspots – all packed into one unforgettable adventure. Spend 24 days covering Spain, Portugal and Morocco, revelling in chaotic markets, relaxing in coastal retreats and sharing conversation and cuisine with the locals. Marvel at artistic masterpieces and architectural wonders in Madrid, taste the rich history of Portugal in its delightful towns, historic performance art and complex cuisine, and be enchanted by the magic and majesty of Morocco’s metropolises and far-flung mountains. With a knowledgeable leader to recommend the best places and take you behind the tourist trail, dig a little deeper in these three countries to discover a local way of life.

Trip overview

  • Experience a memorable Fado performance in Coimbra - an emotional form of Portuguese music expressing the hard realities of the daily life and balancing both resignation and hopefulness.
  • Soak up the sun on the Portuguese coast's gorgeous beaches along the Algarve, walking across rocky cliff tops, exploring remote coves and taking in a sunset over the Atlantic Ocean with your small group.
  • Relive a glorious medieval past in in the labyrinthine streets of Fes city, and discover the cultural capital, Marrakech, through its people - drummers, dancers, fortune tellers, jugglers and medicine men.
  • Scale the High Atlas Mountains and trek through scenic Amazigh villages, spending a night in a traditional Amazigh homestay to get a true sense of rural Moroccan life.
  • Travel through the Sahara in a camel convoy, sleeping under a blanket the North African stars and enjoy an evening beside the campfire listening to traditional Bedouin tales.
  • The European part of this trip will be led by a European leader, while the Moroccan part will be led by a Moroccan leader. The changeover will take place upon arrival at the port of Tangier in Morocco with your European leader returning to Spain after you meet your Moroccan leader.
  • This trip covers a lot of ground and the majority of travel is done by trains, ferries and public buses. It's a good time to sit back, relax and let the scenery roll past your window. Please read the Itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs, and across cobblestones. Train stations often don’t have lifts available.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in this region (over 40C/104F). It's important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Many hotels in Europe and Morocco have fans, not air conditioning. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Space is at a premium in Europe and Morocco and your hotel is no exception. Rooms are often small, but usually the central location makes up for that. For those travelling as a duo, hotels often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.
  • We've sourced our accommodation very carefully and picked the best possible hotels in line with the Intrepid style of travel, but please note that service and accommodation in Morocco may differ from standards at home.
  • Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You'll find dates and further information in the 'Climate and seasonal information' section of the Essential Trip Information.

Welcome to Madrid! The sassy central capital is known for its elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks, but it also pulsates with energy, and is without doubt a vibrant city. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at either 6 or 7 pm, depending on common area availability. After the meeting we will head out for an optional group dinner where you can get to know your fellow travellers. As there's limited time for sightseeing in Madrid, consider flying in a few days early to explore. Perhaps while away the hours along the Paseo del Arte, or Art Walk, for an expansive history of Western art. Start with the Museo del Prado, then discover modern Spanish masters, including Picasso and Dali, in the Museo Reina Sofia. Finish at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, which displays eight centuries of European painting. After your meeting, perhaps get into the mind of a Madrileno with some tapas and Rioja.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Madrid - Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza - EUR13
  • Madrid - Museo del Prado - EUR15
  • Madrid - Real Jardín Botánico - EUR6
  • Madrid - Museo Reina Sofia - EUR10
  • Madrid - Royal Palace - EUR14
  • Madrid - Tapas Urban Adventure - EUR99

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

Say farewell to Madrid this morning and head north-west by public transport to the historical university town of Salamanca. Situated among beautiful pastures and rolling green hills on Spain's northern plateau, the rose-hued medieval town of Salamanca is great to explore on foot. Your leader will take you on an orientation walk on arrival, where you can explore the central Plaza Mayor and discover the beautiful Renaissance and Baroque architecture the city is known for. Plaza Mayor is a true centre of local life, perhaps the most perfect city square in Spain. Not only is it architecturally unique, but it also thrives with activity as locals meet and take coffee, tapas or cocktails on the square. The rest of your afternoon and evening is then free. You can admire the intricate detail of the Casa de Las Conchas, or ‘House of the Shells’, see the contrasting Old and New Cathedrals, and climb to the top to get a view across the terracotta-coloured rooftops. Thanks to the large student population the town has a vibrant nightlife, so maybe soak up the buzzing vibe tonight.

  • Salamanca - Unamuno House Museum - EUR4
  • Salamanca - New Cathedral - EUR5
  • Salamanca - Old Cathedral - EUR5
  • Salamanca - University of Salamanca - EUR10
  • Salamanca - Casa de Las Conchas - Free

Today's travel time is approximately 3 hours.

Head further west by private bus today and cross the border into Portugal to the laidback city of Coimbra. Coimbra will be your base for the next two nights. Sitting dignified on the banks of the River Mondego, Coimbra was once the capital of the county, and its royal heritage can be felt in its ancient streets and buildings. On arrival, your leader will escort you on a walk to help you orientate yourself in the maze of alleyways of this riverfront city. Half the fun of Coimbra is wandering and exploring, so use your free time getting to know the city. Coimbra features typical white stone buildings with several excellent examples of colourful azulejos tiling. Some of the historical structures were originally built in the 12th century (like the Cathedral Se Velha), and you can find some of Portugal's best examples of Romanesque churches and elegant museums here. The University of Coimbra – the oldest in Portugal – and the famous baroque library, the Biblioteca Joanina, with its 18th-century bell tower, are highlights today.

Today's travel time is approximately 4 hours.

Enjoy a free day of exploration in Coimbra before witnessing a traditional Fado performance. Fado songs must follow a particular structure, and though this traditional music can really be about anything, it popularly features mournful tunes with lyrics about the sea or the life of the poor. In Coimbra, male university students would often serenade their sweethearts with this music, with songs here tending to be literary translations or follow themes students can relate to. In your free time, perhaps head out into the countryside in search of ancient Roman ruins, which takes around 30 minutes by bus. The ruins of Conimbriga are rich in well-preserved mosaics and offer a great insight into ancient Roman life. There are several options to return, including a three kilometre walk through the countryside to the unspoiled rural town of Condeixa (optional). If you have time, you can take a short boat tour to take in the view of Coimbra from a different angle.

  • Coimbra - Evening Fado Performance
  • Coimbra - Mondego River Boat Trip - EUR10
  • Coimbra - Cathedrals - EUR5
  • Coimbra - Conimbriga Ruins - EUR10
  • Coimbra - Portugal Dos Pequenitos - EUR15
  • Coimbra - University of Coimbra and Joanina Library - EUR14

Today, jump on a bus through the countryside of central Portugal to Lisbon. As one of Europe's most pleasant and affordable capital cities, Lisbon combines the best elements of Portuguese life, offering fantastic architecture, a multicultural population, delicious seafood and non-stop nightlife. On arrival to the city, head out on an orientation walk around Lisbon, located on the banks of the Tagus (Tejo) River. Much of Lisbon’s character and charm lies in its beautiful renovated buildings, grand boulevards and impressive castles and churches. Visit the medieval citadel in the city centre, the Citadel of Sao Jorge Castle, which dates back to Moorish times and sits on the highest point of the Old Town. Look down on a city swarming with endless angular white houses and buildings with distinct red terracotta rooftops. Your evening is free to explore as you wish, perhaps head to the grand Naval Museum for an insight into the history of Portuguese navigation. Or maybe you'd prefer to roam through charming narrow streets of local neighbourhoods and see local life play out. If you want to sample some Portugese nightlife, Barrio Alto is the place to head this evening.

  • Lisbon - Sao Jorge Castle

Today is free for you to explore more of Lisbon, or maybe take a 45 minute train ride out to the mountainous region of Sintra, an absolute jewel of Portugal where you will see a beautiful Pena Palace. This area offers great walking, stunning cliff-top palaces and unique Moorish architecture. The 8th-century Castle of the Moors looks down on the Old Town, and the views from the battlements across the Serra de Sintra mountain range are stunning.

  • Sintra - Palacio Nacional - EUR13
  • Sintra - Palacio da Pena - EUR20
  • Sintra - Day Trip - EUR10
  • Sintra - Castelo dos Mouros - EUR12
  • Lisbon - Experience Lisbon Walk Urban Adventure - EUR45
  • Lisbon - Naval Museum - EUR7
  • Lisbon - Oceanarium - EUR25
  • Lisbon - Fado Show with Dinner - EUR50
  • Lisbon - Gulbenkian Museum - EUR10
  • Lisbon - Folk Art Museum - EUR5
  • Lisbon - National Art Museum - EUR6
  • Lisbon - Puppet Museum - EUR5

Take a bus journey to the southern coastline of Portugal, the Algarve. Known for fertile plains rich with orange and olive groves, fig trees, almonds and maize fields, this region is perfect to explore. Your base is Olhao, the Algarve’s biggest fishing port. With an active waterfront, Moorish buildings and bustling old quarters, the city has a Northern African feel. Upon arrival check in to your home for the next two nights and use the rest of the day to discover Olhao. You may wish to wander the city centre or perhaps try Olhao’s famous fish restaurants along the waterfront on Avenida 5 de Outubro, the eastern Algarve’s food mile, filled with delicious and authentic local flavours.

Today's travel time is approximately 5 hours.

Olhao is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a series of barrier islands, creating a beautiful landscape of canals, salt pans, lagoons and sandbanks. Today board a local passenger boat and head out to one of these islands, Ilha de Culatra, where you can wander along a series of boardwalks, leading away from the fishermen’s settlements. You'll cross over dunes and lagoons to beaches that are so long that they disappear into the haze of the horizon. Return to Olhao in the afternoon (or earlier if you wish), and enjoy the rest of your day relaxing in Olhao. Perhaps use the area's great walking paths to access some of the Algarve's lesser-known spots, or maybe head towards the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve for some bird watching. Evenings are best spent watching breathtaking sunsets, and the best place to do so is Olhao’s Old Town.

  • Algarve - Culatra Island Day Trip by Boat
  • Algarve - Birdwatching Tour - EUR35
  • Algarve - Marine Wildlife Watching Tour - EUR45
  • Algarve - Boat Trip Rio Formosa - EUR30
  • Algarve - Fishing Trip - EUR40

Please note, the birdwatching and marine wildlife tours in Ria Formosa are seasonal and do not operate in winter.

Leave Portugal behind and return to Spain, travelling by private vehicle to the charming city of Seville. If the legends are to be believed, Seville was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. To the Romans it was Hispalis, and to the Moors it was Isbiliya. After the Christian reconquest, it became thought of as the portal to the 'New World', and is today is the largest city in southern Spain. Seville is famous for its vitality and flamboyance as the city of Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro. Seville is also well-known for its oranges, tapas and flamenco, all three of which are ingrained in the fabric of the city and its proud people. Enjoy a short orientation walk around the main sights, then enjoy some free time in the late afternoon and evening to explore as you wish.

  • Seville - Real Alcazar - EUR14

Today's travel time is approximately 2.5 hours.

This morning you'll rise early to start your long journey to Chefchaouen. You'll head toward Tarifa and then leave Europe behind as you make your way to Africa. After leaving the ferry, you'll be picked up by our Moroccan crew, and journey to a mountain town peppered with blue-washed buildings and ambient restaurants – Chefchaouen, which is in the centre of an agricultural region. There may not be much time to explore this rural retreat by the time you arrive today, but you might just have time to look over the architecture of the 15th-century Grand Mosque and the medina, the walled fortress of the Kasbah. Perhaps tuck into some popular local goats’ cheese or a tajine tonight, before settling in to your hotel.

Please have your passport handy as today you'll head over to Morocco. Your leader will change upon arrival into the port of Tangier. After an introduction your European leader will return to Spain, while your Moroccan leader will take care of you on the Moroccan part of the trip.

Today's total travel time is approximately 6 hours. The private transfer from Seville to Tarifa is approximately 2 hours, and after a 1-hour ferry, the ride to Chefchaouen is approximately 3 hours.

Meet your local guide early in the day to explore the maze of streets in Chefchaouen. The ‘blue city’ is arguably one of the prettiest places in Morocco. Set against a wide valley and nestled between two peaks in the stunning Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen may take you by surprise. Its medina has been lovingly cared for with striking blue and whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs and artistic doorways. The medina is filled with handicrafts, while the main square has shops selling woven goods and small sweets. Learn about general life in a small Moroccan community, visit a communal bakery and walk up to a former mosque for a great view over the town that's nestled between two mountain peaks. As a popular shopping destination for handicrafts, carpets, blankets or woollen garments, you may also see the artisans at work. Possibly relax after your walking tour in a traditional Moroccan hammam.

  • Chefchaouen - Walking Tour with Local Guide
  • Chefchaouen - Hammam (public baths) - MAD150
  • Chefchaouen - Henna Tattoo - MAD50

Say farewell to Chefchaouen today and jump on a private minivan trip to the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco. Arrive in the city of Fes and step back in time to the medieval medina thick with exotic smells, tastes and sounds. Vibrant, noisy, fascinating and overwhelming – a feast for the senses – Fes is the mother of all medinas. Maybe fuel explorations of this imperial city with a glass of mint tea and some sweet Moroccan dates. Your day is free once you arrive, so perhaps get your bearings of the most complete medieval city in the Arab world. The adventurous may want to try some Moroccan specialities like a camel burger or harira (chickpea soup) and chicken-stuffed pastilla with couscous for dinner. Watching the sun set over the Medina while a dozen melodic prayer calls vie for attention is an experience you'll likely remember for a long time.

Take a guided walking tour of the old city, known locally as Fes el Bali. Step back in time in to the labyrinth of the Medina, which is alive with craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Pass donkeys piled high with goods (this is one of the largest car-free urban zones in the world) and explore the specialty sections that divide the souks. Medieval Fes was one of the world's great centres of education and culture: both Islamic and Jewish. Its religious institutions and its libraries are legendary. Its mosques are of great renown. Look out for the Medersa Bou Inania, one of the city's most beautiful buildings, which has recently been restored and is now open to tourists. Pass the Belghazi Museum, Medresse el Attarine and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine, a beautifully restored 18th century inn. You'll also see the famous tannery, known for the iconic view overlooking its dye pits, and a ceramics factory where you can see potters working in the traditional way. After the tour, the afternoon is free for you to enjoy as you please.

  • Fes - Medina walking tour

You'll be on your feet for at least five to six hours today to explore the unique medina of Fes. This is one of the highlights of Morocco and well worth any weariness at the end of the long day. We highly recommend you wear appropriate footwear. Today’s experience will also include some visits to carefully selected shops. As the receipt of commissions or kickbacks in exchange for recommending particular shops, services or activities is ingrained in the culture of the Moroccan tourism industry, Intrepid has established a centralised system of receiving and distributing payments from these recommended suppliers. For more information, please refer to the ‘Important Notes’ section or talk to your Tour leader on the ground.

Travel by train this morning to Marrakech. On arrival in Marrakech, ead out with the group for a quick visit to the main square, Djemaa El Fna before dinner. The square is filled with a hive of activity. Henna-painters, performers and storytellers share the square with a street food bazaar, packed with stalls loaded with Moroccan delicacies. From a distance you'll see the Koutoubia Mosque and its minaret – famous throughout the world as one of the greatest minarets and the 'sister' to the Giralda in Seville. If you have time the following day, explore the ruins of Palais Badi, once one of the most beautiful palaces in the world, or comb the spectacular bazaar, where every step to a new souq brings a new smell, a new sight or a new gift to buy. Be enticed by the alluring scents and brilliant colours of the spice markets, the sounds of the musicians, the rich folds of carpets, delectable foods, acrobats and perfumed gardens. Perhaps brave dinner in the chaotic square of Djemaa el Fna, when night falls.

  • Marrakech - Palais Badi - MAD70
  • Marrakech - Palais Bahia - MAD70

Today's train ride will be approximately 8 hours. Moroccan trains are quite comfortable (we travel in first class), so sit back, relax, watch the scenery roll by or read a good book.

Enjoy a free day in the bustling Marrakech until your 6pm group meeting.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers.

This morning, take a short drive into the High Atlas Mountains to the village of Imlil. When you arrive, store your main luggage and load your overnight bags onto pack mules. Make the 1-hour trek to the peaceful village of Aroumd. Perched on a rocky outcrop, the remote village offers stunning views across the High Atlas Mountains and a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazigh culture. Spend the night in a family-run mountain gite where, surrounded by the smell of woodstoves and bread, you’ll enjoy traditional hospitality and homecooked food. Use the rest of the day to explore the village and the surrounding farmlands. If the group is up for it and weather permits, there will be a chance to hike to the pilgrimage shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (approximately 4 hours return). Regardless of your fitness levels, the gentle pace of Aroumd makes it a special place to explore beyond the reach of the modern world.

  • Gite (1 night)
  • Aroumd - High Atlas Mountains guided hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours. The optional hike to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine requires appropriate footwear. A pair of good walking shoes with rigid and grippy sole will be sufficient. You will walk over well-trodden paths that may be muddy and unstable. Facilities at the homestay are shared (both the bathroom and sleeping arrangements) but cosy, comfortable and definitely a unique and rare opportunity to stay with a local family.

This morning, journey along mountain roads and over Morocco's highest pass, Tizi n'Tichka (2260 metres above sea level), to Ait Benhaddou on the edges of the Sahara. Perched on a hilltop and almost unchanged since the 11th century, Ait Benhaddou is one of Morocco's most iconic sites and a World Heritage site. It was once an important stop for caravans passing through as they carried salt across the Sahara, returning with gold, ivory and slaves. Does it look familiar? The town has a long list of film and TV credits, including Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones and Gladiator! Enjoy a leader-led walk through the winding streets of the Old Town, making your way to the top of the hill, from where you can enjoy the views across the surrounding plains. Your evening is free, with the option of partaking in a local cooking demonstration and meal of Morocco's most famous dishes: couscous and tagine.

  • Ait Benhaddou - Leader-led ksar walk
  • Ait Benhaddou - Cooking Demonstration & Dinner - MAD313
  • Ait Benhaddou - Henna Tattoo - MAD50

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

This morning you'll journey south towards the Sahara Desert, stopping in the regularly used film location of Ouarzazate along the way. Continue to travel through the lush Draa Valley to Zagora, a small oasis town on the Sahara fringe that is perfect for an overnight stop. Here, take a stroll through the palm groves, explore the ksars and wander around the surrounding countryside.

  • Ouarazate - Atlas Movie Studios - MAD80
  • Ouarzazate - Kasbah Taourirt - MAD20

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

After breakfast today, you’ll drive along the rugged and desolate Jbel Tadrart ranges and through seas of sand past the occasional desert oasis of date palms, to the township of Tamegroute. Here, you’ll visit an intriguing library filled with ancient scripts of science, literature, the Koran and stories of the prophet Mohammed (subject to unregulated opening times). After, join a local guide to uncover the underground Kasbah. Enjoy a hearty lunch of Medfouna – nicknamed the ‘Amazigh Pizza’ – a crispy flatbread filled with a variety of smoky ingredients like beef, egg and vegetables. Then, carry on driving to the frontier town of M'Hamid. From here, your group will jump into 4WD vehicles and drive to the massive Erg Chigaga dunes. This is the largest dune in the Moroccan Sahara and one of the less asited – meaning your experience will be further from surrounding towns and villages, making for a unique experience. Arrive in the late afternoon and then all aboard for the experience of a lifetime – riding on the backs on camels into the Saharan sunset. Tonight, enjoy a night under the stars at your desert camp.

  • Desert Camp (1 night)
  • Tamegroute - Ancient Library
  • Tamegroute - Underground kasbah guided tour
  • Tamegroute - Medfouna lunch (Amazigh pizza)
  • Sahara Desert - Sunset Camel Ride

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours. The camel trek through the Sahara is a highlight of the trip, but if you'd rather, you can walk alongside the camels instead. The trip takes about an hour. The camp is simple, with bedding and basic shared toilet facilities. The blankets provided are warm enough between April and October, but you may like to bring your own sleeping sheet or jumper for extra warmth during the months between November and March. Electricity is not available in the camp, so it’s recommended you come prepared with fully charged phones, cameras and everything else you may need.

Travel to the market town of Oulad Berhil today after breakfast, stopping along the way to stretch your legs and take in some epic views. Today will be a long travel day, so stock up on snacks, your favourite playlists and your go-to book. Enjoy desert scenery along a route that's actaully a reserve for the Indigenous argan trees. You’ll make a pitstop at a local woman’s cooperative specialising in argan oil production. This coop provides women and their families in the rural area with extra income for their community, promoting independence. You’ll learn about how the argan is extracted from the trees, how it’s produced and then have the opportunity to try the Amlou paste – a common dip in Morocco made with almond and argan oil. Arrive at your accommodation by the early evening. Your riad for tonight has a steam bath and a pool – the perfect way to relax after a long day of travel!

  • Riad (1 night)
  • Taroudant – Argan oil women coop visit

Your travel time today is approximately 8 hours.

In the morning, take to the souqs of Taroudant and haggle with local traders for silver jewellery or colourful Moroccan ceramics and mosaics. After, head west to the coastal town of Essaouira. The name Essaouira means ‘pretty picture’, which is appropriate, since it's such a picturesque town! Within the stone ramparts, you'll find whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters, art galleries and wood workshops – ironically, the perfect spot for photos! This evening is free for you to explore or relax.

Today after breakfast, join a local guide for a walking tour through the old medina, Jewish mellah, port and skala (sea wall). Essaouira is one of the oldest port cities in the country, and fishing here is still quite traditional. You’ll have the chance to meet one of the expert fishermen in the port, who will tell the group all about their story and show you some of the tricks they use, what type of fish to catch and what seasons mean to them. After, enjoy free time for the rest of the day. Jimi Hendrix spent a lot of time here during the 60s, so you know this is a great spot to sit, people watch and listen to the sound of the ocean. Maybe grab a freshly cooked plate of the day's catch at the port or browse the plentiful shops and intriguing art galleries. This is also a hotspot for surfing, so consider taking a lesson if that’s your thing. If you’d prefer to relax, don't miss the opportunity to indulge in a hammam (Moroccan day spa) or local-style bath.

  • Essaouira - Guided walking tour
  • Essaouira – Local fisherman visit
  • Essaouira - Hamam (public baths) - MAD200
  • Essaouira - Amazigh Massage - MAD400
  • Essaouira - Horse Riding - MAD300
  • Essaouira - Seafood Market Lunch - MAD100

Enjoy a free morning in Essaouira, then catch a bus back to Marrakech in the afternoon. Enjoy free time when you arrive, to explore or partake in optional activities. Walk around the famed Jemaa el-Fnaa Square – one of the largest public squares in the world – and take it all in. From fire dancers to performers and street food carts, this is somewhere you actiually want to get lost. Maybe check out the Palais Bahia, a superb example of Muslim architecture, or the ruins of the Palais Badi. Join your group tonight for an optional farewell dinner.

  • Marrakech - Hot Air Balloon Ride - MAD2090

Your travel time today is approximately 3 hours.

Your adventure ends after breakfast. Additional accommodation can be pre-booked if you wish to spend more time exploring Marrakech (subject to availability). Just speak to your booking agent.

The Perfect Spain, Portugal, Morocco Itinerary for 2 Weeks

apt tours spain portugal morocco

Trying to plan the perfect vacation in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco? We’re here to help! This 2-week Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary is a whirl-wind adventure. It takes you from the tiled streets of Lisbon, Portugal to the dreamy pueblos blancos in southern Spain , ending in the majestic, maze-like medinas in Morocco.

We’ve planned it, personally traveled it, and have laid out the details of our Portugal, Spain, Morocco itinerary to make your trip-planning a breeze.

About this Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary

a beautiful street in cordoba, spain, an easy stop on a portugal spain morocco itinerary

A vacation to the Iberian peninsula, which encompasses Portugal and Spain, is sure to be filled with fun, sun, and lots of sangria and tapas.

With only a mile of water separating the southern tip of Spain from Morocco, the north African country makes for an easy addition to any Iberian itinerary.

Although we planned and did everything on our own, if you prefer a guided tour over a self-guided one, there are a variety of tour companies that offer similar itineraries for Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

For example, this multi-day guided Spain and Portugal itinerary can be paired with this Morocco itinerary to create a full 2 week itinerary for Portugal, Spain and Morocco.

Another option is to do a portion of the trip self-guided and then take a few day trips or guided adventures for the other destinations. You may feel totally fine doing the European portion on your own, but prefer a guided tour of Morocco .

How to get around using this Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary

Following this itinerary will take you by plane, train, metro, bus, rental car, taxi, and even ferry. The transportation element of this itinerary was the most confusing aspect when planning our Spain, Portugal, Morocco trip.

So, we’ve taken the headache out of the equation, providing links to all the places where you can book transportation and when you will need it.

First, if following this Portugal, Spain, Morocco itinerary, plan to fly into Lisbon, Portugal and out of Tangier, Morocco .

We use Google Flights to find the cheapest flight information.

Be sure to search for both open-jaw flights and one way flights to see which option is the cheapest. Once you find the flights that work best, we always recommend booking flights directly through the airline itself.

You’ll be able to travel around Lisbon and to the mountain town of Sintra using public transportation that you can book when you arrive in Lisbon. However, you’ll need a rental car to travel between Lisbon and Albufeira and Faro, Portugal .

It is possible to take a bus from Lisbon to Faro, but you will want a car to travel freely along the Algarve coast.

We use DiscoverCars to compare rates and book cars when road tripping in Europe .

Keep in mind, many of the cheapest cars to rent in Europe are manual transmissions, so if you cannot drive a stick-shift vehicle, be sure to select automatic only when searching for cars.

From Faro, Portugal to Seville, Spain you will need to take a bus , as there are no trains connecting the two cities.

Driving your rental car to Seville is an alternative option, but there are significant fees added when you drive a rental car across a border and drop it off in a different country than you picked it up in.

You’ll save hundreds of dollars by taking the bus. The buses are nice and roomy.

You can check the bus times, ticket costs and book directly at FlixBus .

the main train station in seville

In Seville, you can get by mainly on foot since you will primarily be exploring the city center and old town area if you follow our Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary.

When you leave Seville to head to Cordoba, Ronda, and to Tarifa to board the ferry to Morocco, you will travel by train. You will take the train from Seville to Cordoba, Cordoba to Ronda, and Ronda to Tarifa .

You can review the train timetables and book your tickets at RailEurope.com .

Mother and daughter on the ferry to Morocco from Spain as part of a Spain Portugal Morocco itinerary

The ferry is the easiest way to get between Spain and Morocco. There are two ferry ports in Spain and two near Tangier, Morocco. You want to be sure to go to the right one, which will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Book your train ticket through to Tarifa, Spain rather than Algeciras. You will catch the ferry in Tarifa.

Both Tarifa and Algeciras have ports with ferries that take you to Morocco, but Algeciras is a much longer ordeal, as the ferries are primarily transporting those in vehicles driving onto the ferry.

The port in Tarifa is primarily for those walking onto the ferry, so the wait time and process is much smoother.

You will have to transfer trains in Algeciras to get to Tarifa but it is well worth the extra stop and could potentially save you hours of time. The ferry from Tarifa will drop you off at the port in Tangier , as well, whereas the Algeciras ferry docks at Tangier Med which is located about 30 minutes outside of Tangier.

You can book your ferry from Tarifa on Viator.com .

Taxi/Private Transfer

When you arrive in Morocco, the easiest way to get between cities is to take a taxi or private transfer service.

You can book your transfer to Chefchaouen directly online , or when you arrive at the ferry port, you’ll find plenty of taxi drivers who will also be willing to make the trip to Chefchaouen.

Safety and Health Information

Health and safety are the most important things to consider when booking a family trip. Fortunately, we felt safe in every part of Portugal, Spain and Morocco that we visited.

Personal Safety

Although Morocco can be intimidating for solo female travelers who might experience unwanted attention from men, it is a different story if visiting Morocco with kids .

Moroccans are very family-oriented and children are doted on, stopped on the street, and blessed, particularly by Moroccan women. This may be somewhat disquieting for children who do not like attention or have a fear of strangers, however we never felt unsafe. In fact, our daughter loved the extra attention.

Vaccinations

Any time you travel internationally, you’ll want to make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. You’ll also want to check each country’s entry requirements regarding vaccinations, as those may differ and change over time.

Drinking water

The drinking water or tap water in Portugal and Spain is safe to consume, but you will want to stick to purchasing bottled water in Morocco and avoid eating raw fruits that have been washed in the tap water. We even used bottled water to brush our teeth, although that isn’t considered necessary. It was more of a precaution we took to avoid “traveler’s tummy”.

Unfortunately, it is quite common to experience tummy issues like traveler’s diarrhea in Morocco, and we were not taking any chances.  For this reason, we recommend purchasing travel insurance through a reputable company like Hey Mondo .

Again, health and safety information is always changing, so we always recommend checking with the state department in your country for travel advisories for each location.

Spain and Portugal both use the Euro and credit cards are widely accepted . Although, some places have a minimum purchase amount required if using a credit card.

When getting cash in a new currency, we recommend using an ATM and paying the minimal foreign transaction fee rather than using a currency exchange kiosk. Your bank will typically give you a much better exchange rate.

In Morocco, you will want to take out some Moroccan dirham , as many businesses and vendors in the medinas don’t accept credit cards when purchasing Moroccan souvenirs . You’ll find an ATM at the ferry ports, as well as the airports if you choose to fly.

Be sure to check the currency exchange so you have a general idea on how much money to withdraw.

Visa requirements

Visa requirements will vary depending on your country of origin. Travelers from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and the European Union do not need visas for a Spain, Portugal, Morocco trip.

Your passport and proof of onward travel is all you will need to visit any of these three countries.

However, beginning in 2024, US citizens will have to register and pay a fee to travel to Europe .

Best time of the year to travel to Spain Portugal and Morocco

We did this 2-week Spain, Portugal Morocco itinerary during the summer months – in July and August specifically. It was the peak tourism season in Europe, so many places were crowded.

Additionally, summer in southern Spain and Morocco can be extremely hot.

Although the off-season would be more pleasant and less crowded, it isn’t always feasible for families like ours with school-aged children.

Late spring or early fall would be a much more pleasant time to visit these three countries, if your schedule allows.

2-week Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary in a nutshell

Portugal Spain Morocco itinerary map

Algarve Coast, Portugal

Inside Benagil Cave, one of the most popular places to visit on the Algarve Coast.

Where to stay along the Algarve Coast: Hotel Sol e Mar Albufeira

From Lisbon and Sintra, you’ll head to the Algarve Coast. You’ll want to pick up a rental car to drive to southern Portugal where you’ll have a relaxing couple of days at the beach.

Remember to compare rental car prices online before you book. When picking up a rental car in Lisbon, keep in mind the city is very hilly, so an automatic transmission is beneficial unless you are very comfortable driving a standard transmission.

The Algarve Coast in southern Portugal is a popular beach destination in Europe. You can spend a couple days relaxing on the beach, playing in the ocean, and enjoying seafood and refreshing drinks in the picturesque seaside villages.

The Algarve is known for its pristine white villages perched upon low cliffs overlooking beach coves of white sand . Some popular beach towns to visit and explore include Lagos and Albufeira.

If you rent a car and drive from Lisbon, take a scenic drive along the southern coast, stopping to visit various beaches like Praia Da Rocha and Praia Da Marinh a.

To top off your short time in the Algarve, book a guided tour to Benagil Cave , a stunning seaside cave accessible by boat. It is one of the most popular attractions in Portugal.

Additionally, if you have more time and enjoy traveling at a slower pace, you could tack on a few extra days in this peaceful coastal area.

Here are a few highlights along the Algarve Coast:

  • Beach hopping
  • Benagil Cave
  • Albufeira

Seville, Spain

A bridge over the man-made canal in Plaza de Espana

Where to stay in Seville, Spain:   Eme Catedral Hotel

Your next destination on this Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary takes you to the beautiful Andalusia city of Seville. You’ll want to give yourself at least 3 days in Seville , as well.

The city is known for its tapas, flamenco shows, and relaxed atmosphere. In the heart of the city, you’ll find an extravagant Moorish royal palace, the Real Alcazar , that dates back to 1248.

Seville is also home to one of the largest and most famous cathedrals in Europe if not the world. Climb the Giralda Tower at the Seville Cathedral for panoramic views of Seville.

You’ll also want to build in some time to explore Plaza de Espana and relax at the neighboring Maria Luisa Park .

Additionally, you will also want to spend time simply wandering the streets of the lovely Santa Cruz neighborhood, or book a guided walking tour to learn more about the history of the area. Once the old Jewish quarter of the city, Santa Cruz is notable for its winding alleys with rod iron balconies and hidden squares.

After your days of sightseeing, enjoy some free time during the Spanish siesta in the afternoons to regain your energy and avoid the peak heat hours.

In Spain, it is important to build in downtime during the siesta hour . Not only do many businesses shut down for a few hours during the afternoon, but you’ll likely be staying up later than usual in Spain.

Most people in Spain do not eat dinner until after 8. This is also when many flamenco shows and tapas tours take place.

Plan for at least one or two late nights of delectable tapas, sangria, and flamenco performances.

Here are a few highlights and things to do in Seville, Spain:

  • Seville Cathedral
  • Real Alcazar
  • Plaza de Espana
  • Barrio Santa Cruz
  • Flamenco Show

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Blue buildings in Chefchaouen Morocco

Where to stay in Chefchaouen, Morocco:  Riad La Santa

After two nights in Ronda, it is time to catch a train, and then a ferry from Spain to Morocco.

As an alternative, you could also take the train back to Seville and fly to Morocco instead, if you don’t want the hassle of the ferry. This might be a better option particularly if you are planning to visit Morocco with kids , as long travel days tend to wear out children quicker.

If you prefer to fly, consider flying in and out of Fes instead of Tangier. Fes is the cultural capital of Morocco and one of the best places to visit in the country .

Once in Tangier (or Fes), you’ll want to have pre-arranged transportation to Chefchaouen .

Known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco, Chefchaouen is one of the prettiest cities in the north African country. Situated in the Rif Mountains, the city is known for its charming, pastel blue medina.

Spend a day letting yourself get lost in the narrow streets of the medina, take photos of the beautiful doors and eye-catching nooks and side streets.

Shop and haggle in the souk market for your souvenirs from Morocco , and then hike to the old Spanish Mosque for enchanting views overlooking this blue city.

To get the full Moroccan experience, book your stay in a riad, which is a traditional Moroccan home with a shared interior courtyard.

Here are a few highlights and things to do in Chefchaouen, Morocco:

  • Explore the blue medina
  • Do a photo shoot
  • Visit the souk market
  • Hike to the Spanish Mosque
  • Stay in a riad

Tangier, Morocco

Tangier morocco at sunset looking out over the coast.

Where to stay in Tangier, Morocco:   Royal Tulip City Center

One of the most fascinating facts about Morocco is just how close it is to the continent of Europe. And Tangier is so close to the southern tip of Spain that you can even visit Tangier as a day trip from Seville .

Located right on the coast, Tangier is a great place to end your whirlwind Spain, Portugal, Morocco itinerary. You can spend the day relaxing at the beach, or exploring Tangier’s medina and Kasbah.

Just outside of town, Hercules Caves are a popular tourist site.

To maximize your time in Tangier, it’s worth booking a full-day tour with a guide who can show you the highlights of Morocco’s gateway town to Europe.

Here are a few highlights and things to do in Tangier, Morocco:

  • Wander the streets of the medina
  • Relax at the beach
  • Visit the Kasbah museum
  • Discover Caves of Hercules

Other Spain Portugal Morocco itinerary ideas

We considered several different itineraries for Spain, Portugal, Morocco, so we wanted to provide a few additional options that might better suit your travel style.

#1 Alternative itinerary for Spain Portugal Morocco trip (staying in fewer places with day trips)

This itinerary allows you to skip the rental car and bus, and take an overnight sleeper train from Lisbon to Madrid, although you’ll be missing the scenic beaches along the Algarve coast.

This alternative Portugal, Spain, Morocco itinerary also allows you to stay in one place for longer and take more day trips.

You can take day trips from Lisbon , Madrid, and Seville.

You can even book a day trip from Seville to Tangier, Morocco if you just want to visit Morocco for a day or still plan to fly out of Tangier and take a day trip to Chefchaouen .

  • Lisbon, Portugal: 4 days (with a day trip to Sintra )

  • Seville, Spain: 5 days (with a day trip to Ronda and a day trip to Cordoba )
  • Tangier, Morocco: 2 days (with a day trip to Chefchaouen )

#2 Alternative itinerary for Portugal Spain and Morocco (if Barcelona is a must-visit)

Spain bucket list - Park Guell in Barcelona

It is tough to visit Spain and not visit the beautiful city of Barcelona. However, Spain is a large country and getting to Barcelona in the northeast portion of Spain takes some time.

You can elect to fly between Madrid and Barcelona or take a train. You can also elect to fly between Barcelona and either Tangier or Marrakech, Morocco, if you prefer flights to trains or road trips.

  • Lisbon, Portugal: 3 days (with a day trip to Sintra )
  • Madrid, Spain: 2 days (with a day trip to Toledo )
  • Barcelona, Spain: 3 days
  • Valencia, Spain: 1 days
  • Seville, Spain: 3 days

Is a 2 week trip to Spain, Portugal and Morocco enough?

If you prefer slow travel over a whirlwind trip, 2 weeks is not enough time to visit and truly appreciate Portugal, Spain and Morocco. In 2 weeks, it is a challenge to see more than a small region in each country.

It’s a challenge to get to cities like Marrakesh or Barcelona without spending too much of your time in a car or train. But this itinerary gives you a small taste of each of the countries with a good portion of your time spent in my favorite region of Spain, Andalusia.

You’ll return home having had a wonderful trip and wanting to return to each country to explore more!

Wonderful information! I am planning a 2023 Spain,Portugal,Morocco trip for 7 active seniors (72 average). We can go anytime of year to save money and best weather. Highlights we would like – flying into Madrid, seeing Marrakesh and Casablanca. Any thoughts? Also would it be difficult to rent a car that could accommodate 7 people?

We were able to rent a car for 7 in Portugal, so I bet it is possible in Spain, as well. We used Sixt for our car rental, if that helps. In Morocco, we hired a driver/transport service, which was also able to accommodate 7 passengers. If your trip is 14 days long, I would probably do 3 days in Madrid (with a day trip to Toledo), 4 days in Seville (with a day trip to Cordoba or Ronda), 1 full travel day from Seville to Casablanca arriving at night for a total of 2 days/3 nights, and 3 days in Marrakesh. You could also add one night in Cadiz along the south coast of Spain if you plan to take the ferry across to Tangier. Hope that helps!

Tell me more about that tour for a single man in April or may 2023.

Single heathy age 60.

Hello how do I book any of these or do you just go? Thanks Di Matthews, Qld, australia

I just read about this route and would like to know more. My wife’s 50th birthday comes up in Dec so trying to see where we could have a great celebration.

Would like to know how much and how do we get there?

Amazing post ! thanks for sharing worth visiting article us and very informative

We are very much interested in such tours. Nice and detailed post. But if we don’t have 2 weeks. How can we make it enjoyable in 10 days, plus we are 6 adults, Me, my wife and 4 children of 19 to 25 year. Thirdly how can we apply for Visa from Pakistan.

Thanks so much for this itinerary. It makes planning for our trips so much easier. I appreciate very much.

Thank you so much for this! It is SO helpful – especially for those of us with kiddos! I am wondering if you might be willing to provide an overall cost- I know this cost will vary depending on where we are flying from, cost of items today vs. when you traveled but an estimate would be helpful if even as a starting point! Thank you!

What type of transportation did you take from Portugal to Spain? Train, plane, car ? We are finding little offered between the two. Thanks

We rented a car and drove from Lisbon to the Algarve, then dropped off our rental car in Faro and took a bus from Faro, Portugal to Seville, Spain.

Day 1 Madrid

¡Bienvenido! Welcome to Madrid! Upon arrival, you will be met in the arrivals hall and transferred to your hotel. Meet your Tour Director and fellow travellers, and spend the remainder of the day at leisure.

Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Day 2 Madrid

This morning, meet your tour guide and the rest of your group. Enjoy breakfast before heading out to explore Madrid on a guided city tour.

Explore Barrio de la Morería, the Habsburgs District, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa; the Madrid of the Bourbons and the complex town planning schemes of Charles III, the Royal Palace, Cibeles and Neptuno Fountains and the Puerta de Alcalá. We continue on to contemporary Madrid with areas such as Gran Vía, Castellana, the district of Salamanca, Plaza Castilla and Parque del Oeste, as well as commercial and financial areas of Modern Madrid, the emblematic Las Ventas Bullring and the Santiago Bernabéu Football Stadium.

Tonight, join your fellow travellers for an authentic Tapas dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3 Madrid Segovia Avila Salamanca

Your Iberian adventure commences today as we drive into the Castilla region towards Salamanca.

En route, the first stop will be the city of Segovia, known for its UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Aqueduct of Segovia, which dates back to Roman times. Whilst here, you will have time to explore at your own pace before we continue west towards Avila.

One of the most well-preserved fortifications in Spain, the UNESCO-listed town of Avila has a fully fortified town centre, parts of which can be walked atop. Here you will have enough time to enjoy lunch and explore the fortifications at your leisure.

This afternoon, we will arrive in Salamanca – renowned for its architectural heritage, historical University of Salamanca and a popular stop on the Vía de la Plata path of the Camino de Santiago.

Day 4 Salamanca Pinhão Porto

Today, Portugal beckons.

Our first stop in Portugal is the quaint town of Pinhão. Nestled on a bend of the Duoro River, surrounded by terraced hillsides, the regions around Pinhão are known as being the centre of port production and home to some of the best wines in the world. It is worth mentioning the beautiful train station ornate with vintage harvest images.

Heading west, we will arrive in Porto, one of the oldest European cities. Be in awe of the beautiful buildings that line the Duoro River, the iconic Portuguese trams and the double-deck metal arch Luís I Bridge.

Enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure.

Day 5 Porto

Today, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Porto. Catedral de Portal, known locally as Se, is a hilltop cathedral built between the 12th and 13th centuries. We continue to the British Classical-styled old Stock Exchange building and seemingly austere Santa Clara Church, a masterpiece of gilded woodwork.

Day 6 Porto Coimbra Lisbon

Departing Porto, we head south en route to Lisbon via Coimbra – birthplace of the folk music genre, fado. Whilst in Coimbra, embrace the historic centre, the cathedral and famous University of Coimbra, all whilst hearing the traditional music through the city.

In Coimbra you will witness how student traditions and symbolic practices are preserved. Students in their long black coats enter monumental buildings that still serve as study houses. Walk through the narrow beautiful streets and admire the Roman ruins, the city walls and the special nooks and crannies of the typical neighbourhoods of the historical centre.

Continue onto Lisbon. Spread across seven hills and known for its decorative arts, Lisbon is one of Europe’s most interesting capital cities.

This afternoon is at your leisure, however we recommend venturing to the Alfama Quarter, the old city, and marvelling at the Arco da Rua Augusta.

Day 7 Lisbon

After breakfast, join a city sightseeing tour of the ancient Olissipo. Drive through Lisbon's main squares and avenues, visiting Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, the Coach Museum, Monument to the Discoverers, Marquis of Pombal Square and Liberty Avenue.

Spend the afternoon at your leisure.

Day 8 Lisbon Merida Seville

Today we bid farewell to Portugal – no doubt you will return one day – as we make our way to Seville via Merida. Enjoy the heritage bequeathed by the city's inhabitants over the centuries. Its streets and buildings reflect the passage of Roman, Visigoth, Arab and Christian culture, transporting us to the past. Augusta Emerita archaeological site stands a symbol of great Roman city features, including the amphitheater, the circus and the theater.

In the afternoon, our journey continues towards Seville, capital of Andalucía, and the essence of Spanish tradition.

Day 9 Seville

Explore the city on a morning tour of the Andalusian capital, Seville.

We visit Seville Cathedral, the second-largest in the Catholic world after St. Peters in Rome. It is a testament to the historic health and importance of Seville. Continue to the barrio de Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter of Seville. From here, we continue to Maria Luisa Park and Plaza de España.

This afternoon is at leisure for you to enjoy the city of light.

Day 10 Seville Cordoba Granada

Leaving Seville today for Granada, we stop at Cordoba to explore its Jewish Quarter, narrow winding streets and also Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba.

Afterwards, we continue onto Granada at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Day 11 Granada

The time has come to explore the famous Alhambra and Generalife Gardens. Given the vastness of this sprawling complex, this involves approximately three hours on foot – don’t forget your walking shoes!

The Alhambra is the contemporary history of Granada’s Arab past. Its buildings, towers, palaces, patios and gardens make this palace and fortress complex one of the most visited monuments in Spain. It towers over Granada’s historic Arabic quarter. Within the fortress you’ll find exquisite palaces and serene pathways weaving through amazing gardens and courtyards. The detail is next level – sumptuous interiors, beautiful Islamic geometric patterns, exquisitely carved wood, incredible ornamental features. First built by the Moors as a fortress during the Muslim rule of Spain, the complex is testament to their decadent lifestyle.

The rest of the day is free for you to see more of Granada at your own pace. The city is home to a huge number of tapas bars – what better way to pass the time?

Day 12 Granada Toledo Madrid

Today, we bid farewell to Granada, and set our sights on Madrid, but not before stopping in Toledo en-route.

The Imperial City of Toledo, where the Moors, Christians and Jews have lived together for centuries, invites you to a guided city tour, including its iconic Old Town.

Day 13 Madrid Casablanca

This morning, we will head to Madrid Airport for our flight to Casablanca, Morocco.

On arrival into Casablanca, join a transfer to the hotel and spend the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 14 Casablanca Rabat

Embark on a morning tour of the seaside city of Casablanca, taking in the sites of Anfa Boulevard and Nation’s Square, before concluding outside of Hassan II Mosque. The area of the mosque is large enough to accommodate over 200,000 worshippers, both inside and outside.

In the afternoon, we travel north along the coast towards the capital of Morocco, Rabat.

Day 15 Rabat Meknes Fes

This morning, we will explore the capital of Morocco. Visit the exterior of the Royal Palace, the Mohammed V Mausoleum and Hassan Tower.

After lunch, depart for Meknes to visit Moulay Ismaïl Mausoleum and the monumental gates of Bab Khemis and Bab el Mansour, then continue onto the historic city of Fes.

Enjoy a full day of touring through Fes, considered the religious capital of the country. Founded in the eighth century by Idriss II, it is considered one of the four imperial capitals.

Be guided through the most emblematic places, the exterior of the Royal Palace and its seven gates, the Jewish Quarter, the fortress that has the best view of Fez el Bali, and a visit of the Medina or old city where we will access the famous Bab Bou Jeloud Gate. The city walls create a labyrinth that protect its interior formed by hundreds of organised alleys. Your senses will be almost overwhelmed by the vibrant colours, market sounds, fresh produce and fragrant spices.

Day 17 Fes Midelt Erfoud

Trade the hustle and bustle of Fes for the Middle Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert, as we reach the remote regions of the country.

We will pass Irfane, a small mountain village known for its ski resort, before arriving at Midelt, the capital of this region. Here you will have time to enjoy the scenery of the surrounding area.

In the late afternoon, we will arrive in Erfoud, located on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Day 18 Erfoud Tinerhir Ouarzazate

This morning we will continue to the grand oasis of Tinerhir and Todra Gorge, a massive trench rising over 250 metres to form a dramatic and spectacular natural sight.

Tonight we will stay overnight in Ouarzazate, an area  famous for having such movies filmed as Lawrence of Arabia , Gladiator , Kingdom of Heaven and parts of Games of Thrones .

Day 19 Ouarzazate Marrakech

We will depart for the Kasbah Taourirt this morning, once owned by the Pacha Glaoui, then continue to the fortified city of Ait Benhaddou for a visit to its famous ancient kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From here, cross the High Atlas Mountains at the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, reaching an elevation of 2,260 metres.

On arrival in Marrakech, we will enjoy a guided tour of the city, starting off in the grandiose Menara Gardens, which feature a side pavilion and countless olive trees. Visit the exterior of the minaret of the Koutoubia, twin sister of the Giralda of Seville. Once inside the semi-ancient part of the city, marvel at the Bahia Palace, owned by a nobleman of the city. Finally, reach Jemaa el Fnaa square, one of the most interesting places in Morocco from where we will access the souks and medina, home to artisans of wood, ceramics, furriers and so much more!

Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening with your fellow travellers, to celebrate your time in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
