  • asy·lum | \ ə-ˈsī-ləm \
  • 1: an inviolable place of refuge and protection giving shelter to criminals and debtors : SANCTUARY
  • 2: a place of retreat and security : SHELTER
  • 3a: the protection or security afforded by an asylum : REFUGE
  • b: protection from arrest and extradition given especially to political refugees by a nation or by an embassy or other agency enjoying freedom from what is required by law for most people
  • 4: somewhat old-fashioned: an institution providing care and protection to needy individuals (such as the infirm or destitute) and especially the mentally ill

Atlantic/APG recording band A R I Z O N A have made a stunning leap forward with their eagerly anticipated new album, ASYLUM. The album – which follows the NJ-based trio’s breakthrough debut album, GALLERY – sees them driving their signature approach to remarkable new heights, fusing groundbreaking pop technique with creative visual design and uncommon textural depth. Multi-faceted tracks such as “Problems” and “Still Alive” reveal a profound and powerful sense of community, fueled in part by the band’s exploration of their own interpersonal relationship.

"We chose the word ‘asylum’ as our album title, as we found ourselves in a place where we felt the pressure of album two," says A R I Z O N A’s David Labuguen. "The pressure of following up, of creating something great, of making sure we don't alienate our fanbase while creating something new and fresh – the classic sophomore album dilemma. For us, we had to re-think our friendship. We had to reevaluate the way we work. We had to check in with ourselves, and center back on why we do this in the first place. We had to take our bond as A R I Z O N A and invoke asylum for ourselves as people. It was a physical, mental, and spiritual journey to reconcile the situation, both within ourselves as individuals, and with the world as a band."

Indeed, ASYLUM represents a striking commentary on our complex modern era, its open-armed melodies and powerfully humanist lyricism serving as both an inspirational antidote and practical survival manifesto for troubled times.

"Beyond how the idea asylum impacts us as a band," says Labuguen, "it affects all people. We see in the world today many immigrants seeking political asylum. Marginalized groups seeking to be heard, and looking for change. Our generation – millennials – caught up in feeling low self worth, chasing lives only found on social media feeds, striving for instant gratification only to satisfy a hunger for true happiness with fleeting and frivolous pursuits. Its about being able to be your true self. Realizing having self-worth. Practicing self-care. Being healthy and whole, and safe. Freedom from oppression. Liberty. Asylum ."

With over a billion worldwide streams and counting, A R I Z O N A has proven a true planetary phenomenon, creating worldwide waves with their ingenious brand of contemporary electronic dance pop. The trio first came together at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, their shared interests in production and songwriting uniting them as much as their mutual New Jersey heritage. Songs like "Where I Wanna Be" soon drew millions of multi-platform streams as well as a fervent online following from London to Los Angeles, Stockholm to Singapore. Signed to Atlantic/APG in 2015, GALLERY proved among 2017’s biggest global releases, now boasting over 750 million worldwide streams and counting. The album showcases a stunning collection of hit singles, among them " Electric Touch ," " I Was Wrong ," and the RIAA gold certified “ Oceans Away ," all of which are joined by creative companion videos streaming now at A R I Z O N A's hugely popular YouTube channel HERE .

A R I Z O N A recently release an emotional and powerful collaboration with Avicii , "Hold The Line," which was released on the artist’s posthumous album TIM . “Hold The Line” was added to Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist last week after immediately being met with wide critical acclaim. Rolling Stone praised the song as "a powerful confrontation of loss and grief,” while NY TIMES added, “the track has the rising, twinkling, intrinsically hopeful keyboard tones that Avicii brought to so many of his productions." Upon the song’s release A R I Z O N A posted a beautiful acoustic performance video of the song, dedicated to Tim, that premiered on SPIN .

2018 saw A R I Z O N A return with a string of new singles and remixes, including " What She Wants ," and the double-A sided " Summer Days " and " Freaking Out ," all available now for streaming and download.

A R I Z O N A have spent much of past few years on the road, including a sold out series of increasingly larger headline tours – the first of which completely sold-out three months in advance, with some shows selling out within minutes of going on sale – as well as a North American arena tour supporting Panic! At The Disco, and spectacularly well-received festival sets at such gatherings as Lollapalooza , Music Midtown , ACL , Bunbury, Bonnaroo, Hangout Music Fest, BottleRock Napa Valley, Firefly, Budweiser Made In America Festival, and Governors Ball, to name but a few. Perhaps FORBES said it best: “If you haven’t seen A R I Z O N A, you’re missing out.”

A R I Z O N A is: Nathan Esquite, David Labuguen, and Zachary Charles.

'That is how you turn 60': Maynard James Keenan, Primus and Puscifer go hard in Phoenix

arizona tour music

Maynard James Keenan was nearing the end of a freewheeling stop on his 60th birthday tour, Sessanta , basking in the afterglow of “Southbound Pachyderm” as performed by a sprawling collective of extremely talented musicians from A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus, when he told the crowd, “And that, mother (expletives), is how you turn 60.”

He was technically still 59 at that point. He turns 60 on Wednesday, April 17, when he returns to that same stage with those same friends at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, just down the hill from his home in Jerome, Arizona .

But it’s doubtful many people have embraced the thought of turning 60 with a more inspired blend of self-effacing humor, undeniable vitality and unabashed artistry than Keenan.

Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta was as untraditional as promised

The night was every bit as untraditional as promised, played out on a two-tiered stage with sofas and three drum kits on the upper level and a chairlift to transport musicians from one level to another, not because they’re too old to climb the stairs but because it added to the entertainment value of the night.

And that goes double for the people playing ping-pong during “Bullet Train to Iowa” and Keenan and Carina Round of Puscifer squeezing a game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots into Puscifer’s “The Remedy,” which features some of Keenan’s greatest lyrics (“Yes, we’re being condescending/ Yes, that means we’re talking down to you”).

The premise of this tour is that the members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus will not only share a stage but share musicians as the night unfolds, resulting in some truly awe-inspiring feats of musical cross-pollination.

Having multiple drummers definitely added layers of intensity to the proceedings. You never knew when Les Claypool of Primus would show up in another goofy mask to join one of the other bands on bass. And Keenan gamely guested on lead vocals on Primus’ “Tommy the Cat.”

It felt like crashing a really cool party at a rock star’s house and watching the musicians let their hair down, except for one thing. You could tell they put some thought and effort into making sure it sounded right.

It was all about musicianship and friendship and the magic of collaboration.

How Keenan's Sessanta played out on the eve of his 60th birthday

The concert began with a video of Keenan in a Spam commercial driving home the zero-camera policy by warning fans that if you chose to disobey this policy, you would be asked to leave, at which point you would find yourself fed through an oversized meat grinder outside the concert, thereby becoming the secret ingredient that makes Spam such a culinary favorite of “cannibalistic cultures.”

As threats go, it was pretty entertaining.

Each band took a turn in the spotlight, starting with A Perfect Circle, who followed Keenan’s PSA with a haunting rendition of “The Package.”

At the song’s conclusion, Keenan took a moment welcome the crowd to his birthday show with “Let’s confirm what we already know… Arizona.”

The audience cheered, but not enough to satisfy him.

“Sounds like California,” he scoffed, an insult met with boos. “Let’s fix it. Arizona!"

Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta setlist: What A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus played.

Maynard James Keenan weighs in on Arizona's return to 1864

That did the trick. Then, Keenan took a moment to address the local news.

“OK, so I’ve been out of town for about three weeks, out of state,” he said. “ Anything change that I should know about ? I dunno, like 1864 ? Jesus (expletive) Christ, people. Here’s my short speech, then I’ll (expletive) off. Register to (expletive) vote, please.”

Then it was back to the music with “Disillusioned.”

Each band did a three- to four-song set before rotating through the lineup two more times while changing up the order.

After bringing it all to a head with “Southbound Pachyderm” and telling the crowd this is how you turn 60, Keenan said, “I have been blessed with the privilege of working with some of the best musicians on the (expletive) planet… For my birthday, I got three new songs.”

And with that, the three bands dusted off the three songs featured on “Sessanta E.P.P.P”: A Perfect Circle’s “Kindred,” Puscifer’s “No Angel” and the Primus song “Pablo’s Hippies.”

Keenan closed his birthday celebration 'witnessing the majesty'

As the Primus song ended, Keenan joked, “Holy (expletive), you’re still here?”

Then, he brought the concert to a suitably majestic close with Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” singing “Witnessing the majesty.”

He’s referring, of course, to the majesty of the Grand Canyon. But it certainly applied to what we’d all just witnessed in the course of that performance.

Sessanta returns to Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Keenan’s birthday — Wednesday, April 17.

San Diego band Electric Mud will open Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert

Three of the award-winning band’s four members are U.S. Navy veterans and nephews of Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards and his wife, Patti Hansen. ‘It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,’ says Electric Mud co-founder Marc Hansen.

It’s a dream never fully dreamed come true for Electric Mud. The award-winning San Diego rock band, led by former U.S. Navy SEAL Marc Hansen, will perform as the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ May 7 Arizona concert at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix.

The band, co-led by former Navy Seal Marc Hansen and his brother, Matt, performs two audience-free concerts Saturday to promote its third album

June 12, 2020

The announcement was made Thursday morning in a press release issued by the legendary English band’s New York representatives.

The concert at the 63,400-capacity Arizona stadium is one of 16 dates on the Stones’ 2024 North American Hackney Diamonds stadium tour. It opened Wednesday in Houston, concludes July 25 in Santa Clara, just outside San Francisco, and includes July 10 and 13 performances at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The band will perform in 16 cities in the U.S. and Canada, including concerts in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. The lone Canadian tour stop is in Vancouver

Nov. 21, 2023

“The biggest show we’ve ever done up until now was at San Diego’s House of Blues club,” Hansen told the Union-Tribune late last week. “This Arizona concert with the Stones came out of the blue.”

Out of the blue, perhaps. But not without some lobbying — and a fortuitous family connection — on the part of Electric Mud.

Three of the band’s four members — brothers Marc and Matty Hansen, and their cousin, bassist Matt Sorena — are the nephews of Patti Hansen and her husband, Rolling Stones guitarist and vocalist Keith Richards.

Marc Hansen credits Keith Richards for giving him his first guitar and first guitar lesson as a teenager, and for encouraging Electric Mud early on. The band was formed in Staten Island, N.Y. in 2008, then relocated to San Diego, after guitarist/singer Marc and his drummer brother Matty enlisted in the U.S. Navy and relocated to San Diego.

“I had sent our Aunt Patti an Electric Mud promotional package to give to the promoters of the Stones’ tour two years ago,” Hansen, 37, recalled.

“We hadn’t heard anything since then, so we all thought it was a shot in the dark. Then, just a few weeks ago, the promoters asked my aunt: ‘Hey, where are your nephews? We want them to open for the Stones.’ Then, they contacted us. They said Mick (Jagger) had a big hand in picking us — as he does with all the bands that open for the Stones — and told the promoters to give us a shot.”

The Hansen brothers and Sorena each released solo albums last year. But Electric Mud, whose fourth member is guitarist Colton Cori, has been largely inactive as a band since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020.

Opening a stadium gig for the Stones is a singular reason to kick back into gear — and a potentially nerve-wracking one — since the opening acts at other dates on the Hackney Diamonds tour includes such established artists as Gary Clark, Jr., Widespread Panic, Tyler Childers and Lainey Wilson.

“I’d say we’re a lot more excited than nervous,” said Hansen, whose day job is as a civilian trainer for U.S. Navy SEALs. “We’ve never done anything this big, so there are a lot of extra details that go with it. I mean, we don’t even have a soundman!”

To get ready for their very big show in Arizona, Electric Mud will do some recordings sessions here this weekend. The band will then rehearse all of next week at a studio near the Pechanga Arena San Diego, a venue the Stones have performed in a number of times over the past half-century. Electric Mud’s goal is to hone a dozen or so of the band’s songs, then select the best six for their 30-minute opening set at State Farm Stadium.

If all goes according to plan, Electric Mud will do a free warm-up concert here in San Diego on May 5. (Updates will be posted on the band’s website at electricmudofficial.com/band .) Then, comes the May 6 drive with all their equipment to Arizona, and the big night on May 7.

“It will be the most awesome show we’ve ever done,” Hansen said. “And even if we never do anything else, we’ll have opened for the Stones, our favorite band and the greatest rock and roll band in the world. We will get on that stage and do the very best we can do. What really matters is that we crush that show.”
