How To Use AT&T Cruise Packages Without Breaking The Bank

Categories CRUISE TIPS , Technology & Communication

We have previously written about using your cell phone on a cruise . While several of the major carriers offer some form of cruise packages, the AT&T cruise packages are generally the most extensive and reliable. You also have other easy communication options that take advantage of the ship’s wifi.

( Editor’s Note: This is not intended to be a promotional plug for AT&T. Rather, it is based on the sad first-hand observation that it is possible to sign up for a cruise package with one of the other major carriers (which shall remain nameless) and discover that it doesn’t actually work — while your travel companion who has AT&T seems to never encounter any access problems. This happened on three separate cruises! — E.W. )

If you need to rely on actual cell phone carriers (for work reasons, for instance), then this is what you need to know.

AT&T offers two cruise packages to stay in touch with your connections while on a cruise and when you’re in port. These packages are available on more than 175 cruise ships. Both charge a once-off fee, which gives you 30-day access to talk time and texting. The more expensive deal offers a specified amount of data too.

How To Use AT&T Cruise Packages

AT&T has two offerings in the category of cruise packages. The first is a $100 option; the AT&T Cruise Talk, Text, & Data package . It gives you unlimited talk time, texts, and 200MB of data. Overage fees are $2/MB.

The other package is the AT&T Cruise Talk &Text , which costs $50, providing you with 50 minutes of talk time with an overage cost of $2/minute. It also includes unlimited texts .

You need domestic wireless service and a compatible device to use either of these packages. Your package is valid for 30 days from the chosen date, even if it overlaps two bill cycles. It will automatically expire at the end of the period.

You will pay a once-off fee for each device you wish to use on the cruise. AT&T will charge you the full amount for a cruise package canceled on or after your effective date, but it won’t cost you anything if you cancel before the effective date.

What About Coverage?

The two AT&T cruise packages provide you with coverage while onboard specific ships traveling in international waters. You also get coverage in Canada, Mexico, and most Caribbean islands at no extra cost.

When your device is linked to the ship’s cellular network , you will find one of the following codes displayed on your screen:

  • cellularatsea

When the ship comes within 12 nautical miles of land, it is required to switch off its cellular network. Your phone will then connect with the closest country’s networks.

What Is The AT&T International Day Pass?

If your travels take you to countries not listed for AT&T cruise packages, you can add an AT&T International Day Pass (IDP) to your device before traveling. Alternatively, AT&T can add it to your line if you have no international features attached to it.

This will give you coverage for any in-country use. The IDP only applies when the ship is docked, if you’re on land in a foreign country, or if you’re being ferried to shore on a smaller boat. It costs $10 per day per line and provides you with data, texts, and talk time identical to your home package, and you can use it in 210 different countries. You are only charged for days that you use the IDP.

AT&T caps your bill at $10 per day on a single line. Using another line on the same account within the same 24-hour period will cost $5.

When Would You Need Pay-Per-Use Rates?

AT&T offers coverage on 175 different cruise ships. However, if you’re on a cruise ship that doesn’t support AT&T, the pay-per-use rates apply. This rate also applies when you haven’t bought a package, or when it expires. Pay-per-use rates are typically more expensive than cruise plans.

  • Talk time costs $3 per minute.
  • Texts cost $0.50 per message and $1.30 for a picture or video message
  • Data charges are $4.10 per MB

How To Manage Your AT&T Cruise Package

Here are some tips for managing your usage if you’ve purchased an AT&T cruise package.

  • Switch off your data roaming in the device’s Settings.
  • Disable any applications operating in the background
  • Disable your email auto-check.
  • Avoid streaming because it uses too much data. Rather download content before leaving the country (or buy a streaming package offered by the cruise line).
  • Use the AT&T IDP if you plan to use a lot of data while in port or Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean islands, and your domestic package doesn’t provide data in these countries.
  • Remember that each cruise package you buy is for one device only. If you need multiple devices, each one will need its own cruise package.

Using Your Phone Internationally

If you’re not used to communicating internationally, follow these guidelines to get your business done:

  • If you need to call or text someone in the US, select +1 and add the 10-digit phone number.
  • To communicate with someone in another country, choose + (country’s code) and the local number.
  • Switch on data roaming if you want to utilize cellular data.

The Pros And Cons Of AT&T Cruise Packages

These cruise packages have their benefits and their downsides.

Benefits Of AT&T Packages

These cruise packages offer discounted cellular service onboard more than 175 ships. They are compatible with the IDP, which is cheaper than international roaming rates. It saves the passenger from exorbitant pay-per-use charges. You also don’t have to purchase a wifi plan (but there are reasons you may want to do so anyway-particularly if you will be using large amounts of data).

The Downside Of AT&T Cruise Packages

If you’ve bought the $50 package, it includes no data. You must be very careful about data usage because it costs $2/MB. If you don’t turn off your data roaming or put the device in airplane mode, you could end up with an almighty data bill.

Although the $100 cruise package includes unlimited talk time and texts, it only gives you 200MB of data, which doesn’t last very long. The plan automatically permits you to access more data when needed or when applications use it to operate in the background. This could also set you up for a huge bill.

It could be cheaper to purchase a ship internet wifi package (such as Royal Caribbean’s Voom) which gives you constant access to the internet and supports wifi-calling.

Closing Thoughts

If you need to stay in touch through text or foresee needing to make many phone calls while on your cruise, an AT&T cruise package may be just what you’re looking for. The flat rate fee will allow you to budget accordingly and not worry about paying per use. However, keep in mind that these plans do not include data and if you plan to be calling or texting others on the cruise, they will need their own coverage.

AT&T International Plan Cruise Package - Anybody used it?

Cool Cruiser

I have an upcoming 7 day cruise and because of my work I need to available in case needed.  Before the "turn off the phone" replies start coming in, it is part of my job and personally I hate cell phones and would love to lock it in the room safe for 7 days but that is not possible.  Hopefully I won't get a call but I have to be available.  With that said has anyone used this package before?  Any hidden costs or fees?

What about the ship's Wi-Fi? Maybe it's good enough for Wi-Fi calling? Can anyone report?

Good to know... I think this is fairly new for coverage on NCL ships.  I've had AT&T for years and have always just done the international day passes because there was nothing optional for on board the ships through AT&T.

$100 for 200mb of data & calls is horrible though...

I don't have any experience with it but I have an AT&T store next door to where I work. I would love to get this for my next cruise to keep in contact with my house sitter. Its the only thing that causes me anxiety. See if you can get your company to pay for the extra cost since they are making you have access to your phone!

The AT&T package is good, but it only works IN PORT.  It does NOT cover calls made or received when you are at sea.  You have to keep that in mind.

I don't think that's true. It says at the bottom of the link that OP posted that it's for specific cruise ships and cruise lines, and "designed for use onboard cruise ships while at sea" -- so it would presumably not cover calls when a ship is in port and the cell phone towers are not active. Another consideration to keep in mind!

No, it also includes cell phone usage while in select ports as well.

"Save with affordable cruise packages for talk, text, and data usage. Your package INCLUDES usage on land in Mexico, Canada, and select Caribbean islands at no additional charge."

Not in every port.  Here's the list of ships and ports where it works.  https://www.att.com/offers/international-plans/cruise-ship-list.html

Last time in December on Epic. It worked on all ports

even one that was not on list

However while on Epic I could not use it

looks like On Dawn we can.  Wooohoo

hery I’m happy no matter

I have the free Wi-Fi package and the phone call package we got for free on board

I think some of you are confusing packages...  AT&T has a cruise ship package now that includes NCL ships.  They are discussed in the link at the top but they do not allow any additional data above what is included in the package (200mb).

The $10/day package that someone has mentioned is the International Day Pass.  It does NOT work on the cruise ship and will charge you international roaming if you attempt to use your data or phone while on the cruise ship.  The International Day Pass is good in port only for a 24 hour period and uses your existing plan data.

It's great if you can time it right and want to save a little bit of money.  Anytime you have back to back port days, just start a new "pass" around noon and then you have until noon the following day in a different port to use the same pass.  Essentially, this lets you use one pass for every other day for the most part...  And is a lot cheaper than the cruise package from AT&T or the cruise ship internet if you only want it while in port to begin with.

Yes we do the international day pass

it worked well

I will have to find out about ATT

cruise ship package

do I need to call ATT

i have the Wi-Fi on ship package

AT&T has three cruise ship plans that can be used on eligible ships and in eligible ports.   1) A calling and texting plan:  $50 for 30 days gives you 50 minutes talk time and unlimited send texts,  2) a calling, data and texting plan:  $100 for 30 days gives you 200MB data, unlimited talk and unlimited send text, and 3) a $3.00 per minute plan.  In the ports not covered by the cruise plans you need to get one of their international plans.  The International Day Pass is great at $10 per day, charged only when you use your device in a covered country.

The NCL Internet packages are data plans not calling plans.  Not sure if NCL permits wifi assisted calling on their plans.

Thanks

Thank you for simplifying and posting

We appreciate you 🙂

So, so far no posts by anyone that has used the AT&T onboarding plan. I am considering it for my Christmas cruise.

I have used the $10/day pass and thought it was awesome to use my phone pretty much like I would at home.

Thanks for the noon to noon  option (or any two day 24hr window). That can work for Roatan and Grand Cayman.

I used it on a RC cruise in the Caribbean and it was fine.  The quality of the service depends on the ship's equipment and atmospheric conditions, not the carrier.

I called AT&T yesterday and added the $50 plan for my cruise on the Breakaway leaving in 2 days.

I mainly need to be able to text with my office. I figure if something comes up, I can get a WiFi NCL package otherwise there’s WiFi at some places on shore where I can check email, etc.

Edited to add I initially went to the AT&T store and the guy helping me had no idea what I was talking about. He told (very condescendingly) that such a thing doesn’t exist because there’s no cell towers in the middle of the gulf. I pulled up their website and showed him and he was like ohhh...uhhhh...I don’t know anything about this. He called his manager over and he said this is not something they can do in the store. You HAVE to call.

Someone I work with is on the Breakaway as well.  It's a great itinerary!  The Starbucks in port at Cozumel has free wifi with any purchase.  Palmeras (just down the main road to the north) has wifi if you go for lunch as well.

The believe the port area in Costa Maya has free wifi and a bunch of the restaurants in the little village have wifi if you stop and have lunch or a drink with them.

I honestly don't recall if Harvest Caye had wifi or not (I don't think it did) and since you aren't really "on land" in a port, I don't recall there being cell phone service either.

It's been so long since we were in Belize City, no suggestions for there.

Yep, I figured out the trick for the back to back ports on the last cruise by accident.  We went on an early excursion and I didn't get my phone out to do anything "on line" until around 11 or 12 that day.  The next morning in the next port, I got it out expecting to see the notification about staring a "new" day pass but didn't...  You just have to be care not to keep using after the end of the 24 hours if you want to pull off the every other day method.  It's a good way to stay connected just enough to keep email caught up and send a few messages/etc. if you need to and not wind up with an arm and a leg in charges.

I just returned from a 14 day cruise aboard NCL and called AT&T prior to leaving.  I placed the new cruise package on for $100 so I could call home as we had many sea days.  When trying to use my phone I received the message that if I wanted to use the service I needed to contact AT&T.  Needless to say, it was useless to me.  When returning home, I called and they refunded the fee to me which was fine but did not relieve that fact that I could not use the phone.

I also have the International Day Pass Service active on my phone which I think is better.  The advice to start it later in the day when at a port so that you can use it the next day in another port is very wise.

Fyi: we are on an at&t family plan and have FREE text, talk and data in the US, Mexico and Canada. We had to call to have it added,  it it cost ZERO! We travel frequently between these 3 countries and it’s been just great. And did I mention, it’s FREE? Just call and they will add.

Stace894

Also be careful when you are In port but still on the ship. We did the day plan and it worked fine be we had to be about 50 yds away from the ship for it to kick in.  We noticed the problem the first day about 1 hr after we docked.  Called ATT on the phone immediately and was on with them for an hour.  Although multiple people before the cruise assured me that as long as we were docked, I could use on the ship.. .that was not the case and we had a high bill. Took 2 months fighting it but they finally dropped the extra charges.  After that first day only used when we were on land but was really nice to have at the beach.

cruising soon and this thread has been informative. Comments about needing to be actually on the land to use day pass especially helpful. Has anyone seen different coverage when in port?

Cruise fanatics!

Is AT&T Cruise Plan Worth it?

Picture your phone bill turning into a sea captain, steering through rough waves of roaming fees, with a loud parrot yelling about extra charges.

I’ve been around the telecom world, mapping out the tricky terrain of phone plans. The worry of dropping your signal or facing huge bills while on a cruise?

It’s real.

But here’s the good news: this article is your guide to figuring out AT&T’s Cruise Plan.

Let’s dive in and see if it’s the treasure you’ve been looking for or just a call from the deep.

What is the AT&T Cruise Package?

The AT&T Cruise Package is a cell phone plan made just for people who want to use their phone on a cruise. It lets you make calls and go online without worrying about international roaming fees.

This plan is perfect for anyone on a cruise ship or visiting a Caribbean island. It makes sure you can use data, make calls, and send “Wish You Were Here” texts easily.

The best thing about this package is how simple it is. You get unlimited talking and texting, so you can chat as much as you want. Depending on the plan you pick, you also get a certain amount of data. This is great for browsing the web, using apps, or posting those vacation photos that make everyone jealous.

Another great feature is that it lasts for 30 days. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy your trip and keep in touch with everyone.

Understanding AT&T Cruise Package Options

AT&T has simplified its cruise cell phone plans into two main options, catering to various needs and budgets: Cruise Basic and Cruise Plus. These packages are designed to keep you connected without the hassle of complicated plan details.

AT&T Cruise Plus

The AT&T Cruise Plus is your go-to plan if staying in touch and sharing your experiences is important to you. With a one-time fee of $100, it offers:

  • Unlimited Talk and Text: Enjoy endless conversations and share your adventures without worrying about time.
  • 1GB of Data: Ideal for social media enthusiasts and light internet users. It’s perfect for browsing, status updates, and emails. However, if you’re into streaming music or videos, be mindful that 1GB will run out quickly. It’s crucial to understand the data limit to avoid surprises.
  • Overage Costs: Exceeding the 1GB limit incurs a charge of $10 per 100MB, so keep an eye on your usage.

AT&T Cruise Basic

For those who prefer a more minimal approach or just want a backup for emergencies, the AT&T Cruise Basic could be the right choice. At a one-time charge of $60, it includes:

  • 100 Minutes of Talk Time: Great for quick check-ins or restaurant reservations.
  • Unlimited Text: Stay in touch with unlimited texting, keeping your group chats lively.
  • 100MB of Data: Though limited, it’s sufficient for essential browsing. Like the Plus plan, going over the limit costs $10 per 100MB.

Both packages last for 30 days, offering a month-long connectivity solution without daily renewals. This approach by AT&T ensures you can choose a plan that matches your communication style and budget, making your cruise experience even better.

How the AT&T Cruise Package Works

Using the “cellular at sea” network.

The AT&T Cruise Package connects you through the ship’s own cellular network, also known as “Cellular at Sea.” Once you’re on board and the ship starts its journey, your phone automatically hooks up to this network. This lets you roam as if you were using your phone in another country.

Normally, using the “Cellular at Sea” network costs a lot. That’s why people usually switch their phones to “Airplane Mode” to avoid unexpected charges. But with the AT&T Cruise Package, you don’t have to worry about that. This package makes the “Cellular at Sea” network a helpful friend.

After connecting, you can make calls, text, and use data based on the plan you’ve chosen. It’s important to remember that this doesn’t use the ship’s Wi-Fi but a special cellular network just for AT&T customers. This means you get a consistent and reliable connection while you’re cruising.

Understanding Port Networks

When your cruise ship docks, your phone might switch to a local network on land, like on a Caribbean island or wherever the ship stops. If this happens, the special rates from the AT&T Cruise Package won’t apply. This could lead to regular international roaming charges unless you’ve got other international options set up on your phone. AT&T’s International Day Pass, which costs an extra $10 per day, is one way to avoid these extra charges.

Keeping Track of Your Network and Data

To avoid surprise charges, it’s smart to watch your data use and which network you’re connected to. If you want to keep using the cruise package, you should set your phone to prefer the ship’s network over any local ones. This can be done in your phone settings by choosing to manually select your network.

Before your cruise, it’s also a good idea to make sure your phone will work with the package. Check that your phone is compatible and set up for domestic wireless service. If you’re not sure how to do this or if you need any help, AT&T’s customer support is there to help you out.

AT&T Cruise Ship Package vs. Cruise Ship Wi-Fi

Both the AT&T package and cruise ship Wi-Fi let you stay connected at sea, but they work in different ways and come with their own sets of pros and cons.

  • AT&T Cruise Ship Package: This connects through the ship’s cellular network, using satellites once the ship is a bit away from land. Generally, this means you can expect a stable connection.
  • Cruise Ship Wi-Fi: This connects directly to satellites, too. But since everyone on the ship might be trying to use it, it can get slow when it’s busy.

New Satellite Technologies

Now, some cruise lines are starting to use newer satellite tech like Starlink, which is faster and more reliable. But even though it might be cheaper for cruise lines to use, the price for passengers hasn’t dropped. So, even though Wi-Fi is getting better on ships, it’s still just as pricey.

Costs and Data

  • AT&T Package: You get clear, set prices, so no surprises on your bill. But, remember, the data you get isn’t much.

What You Need: Calls or Streaming?

  • For Calls and Texts: The AT&T package is great if you mostly want to call or text people. It’s also okay for a bit of internet browsing.
  • For Streaming and Fast Internet: If you love streaming music or videos, or just need quick internet, go for the cruise ship’s Wi-Fi. This is especially true for ships with Starlink, as they offer faster and more reliable internet.

So, if you’re mainly about calls and texts, the AT&T package should do the trick. But for anything that needs more data, like streaming, the ship’s Wi-Fi is your best bet.

Understanding the Limitations of the AT&T Cruise Package

The AT&T Cruise Package helps you stay connected while cruising. Yet, it has its limits, particularly with data.

  • Data Caps: The Cruise Plus option gives you 1GB, and the Cruise Basic just 100MB. These amounts might seem okay at first glance, but modern internet use can deplete them fast.

Watching Movies and Streaming

  • Movies: Watching a movie in standard definition can use about 700MB to 1GB per hour. With the Cruise Plus package, a single movie could use all your data. And on Cruise Basic, just a brief video clip could take up a large chunk of your allowance.
  • Music : Streaming music uses about 40-70MB per hour. For music lovers, this can quickly eat into your data, especially with the limited Cruise Basic package.

Browsing and App Use

  • Internet Use: Regular activities like browsing, checking emails, and using apps vary in data consumption. But, websites full of images or videos that play automatically can burn through data fast. You might use anywhere from 60MB to several hundred MBs per hour, depending on what you’re doing online.

So, while the AT&T Cruise Package offers a way to keep in touch at sea, it’s important to be mindful of these limitations to avoid running out of data too quickly

Overage Costs

  • Extra Charges: Going over your data limit? AT&T charges $10 for each 100MB you use over your plan. So, adding another 1GB of data would cost you $100. These fees can add up fast if you’re not careful with your data usage.

Port Connectivity

  • No Service at Port : Once you leave the ship’s “Cellular at Sea” network, you’re on international roaming, which can get pricey. The AT&T Cruise Package won’t cover you in international ports, meaning you’ll face high roaming charges there.

Compatible Cruise Lines with the AT&T Cruise Package

The AT&T Cruise Package is available on a wide range of cruise lines, ensuring you stay connected while sailing. Here’s a list of cruise lines where you can use this package:

  • Azamara Club Cruises
  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Celestyal Cruises
  • Cordelia Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Dream Cruises
  • Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
  • Hapag Lloyd Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Japan Grace Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • P & O Cruises
  • P & O Ferries
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
  • Royal Caribbean International
  • Silversea Cruise Line
  • Sky Sea Cruise Line
  • Star Cruises
  • TUI Cruises
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Windstar Cruises

This extensive list means you can likely stay connected with the AT&T Cruise Package on your next cruise adventure, enjoying the benefits of seamless communication across the seas.

AT&T International Day Pass vs. Cruise Package

At&t international day pass.

  • What It’s For: It’s for when you’re traveling in over 210 countries.
  • Cost: You pay $10 a day for unlimited everything – data, calls, and texts.
  • Where It Works: In more than 210 places, and you can even get 5G in some spots.

AT&T Cruise Package

  • What It’s For : This one’s for people on cruise ships.
  • Cost: There are two choices – Basic is $60, and Plus is $100, both for 30 days.
  • Where It Works: On over 175 cruise ships.

The Difference

The International Day Pass is great for when you’re traveling around different countries on land. It gives you a lot of flexibility. The Cruise Package, though, is made for when you’re at sea on a cruise. It’s all about keeping you connected while you’re on the ship.

AT&T’s Pay-Per-Use Rates Explained

Without an AT&T Cruise Package or International Day Pass, standard pay-per-use rates kick in, and they can be quite high.

Talking Costs

  • Canada and Mexico: $1 per minute
  • Europe: $2 per minute
  • Rest of the World, Cruise Ships, and Airlines : $3 per minute

Texting Costs

  • Text Messages: 50 cents per message
  • Pictures and Videos: $1.30 per message
  • On Land, Cruise Ships, and AeroMobile® (on select flights): $2.05 per MB
  • Airlines: $10.24 per MB

Data is billed in full kilobyte increments and rounded up. This means even a small amount of data can cost more than you expect. Be especially mindful of your data use with things like streaming or other high-data activities.

To Buy or Not to Buy: Considering the AT&T Cruise Package

When thinking about getting the AT&T Cruise Package for your cruise, it’s important to look at what works in its favor and what doesn’t.

  • Tailored for Cruisers: It’s made for those who mainly want to use their phone for talking and texting on a cruise, helping you stay connected without the huge roaming fees.
  • Simplicity: AT&T offers two main packages, making it easy to pick one that fits your needs.
  • Fixed Rate for 30 Days: You know what you’re paying upfront for the whole month, which helps with planning your travel budget.
  • Coverage: This package is valid on over 175 cruise ships, giving you a lot of choices and generally reliable coverage.
  • Independent of Ship’s Wi-Fi: It connects through the ship’s cellular network, which might give you a steadier connection than the ship’s Wi-Fi.
  • Limited Data: The data you get may not be enough, especially for today’s internet use.
  • Port Limitations: The package won’t cover your data use when docked at ports, which could lead to expensive roaming fees.
  • Extra Costs for Overage: If you go over your data limit, the extra charges can be significant.
  • Not Great for Streaming: If you like to stream videos or music, the data included might not be sufficient.

Choosing the AT&T Cruise Package means balancing these pros and cons to see if it matches your needs and usage patterns while on a cruise.

Exploring AT&T’s Cruise Package For The High Seas? Is Cellular AT&T Cruise Package Worth It?

Are you planning for a cruise voyage? The first thing that you should consider is Internet connectivity.

In Today’s modern world, everyone is connected through social media, and during sailing, you can’t be cut off from your friends and family.

Who wouldn’t want to share their snaps while sailing, right? And who wouldn’t want to have a video call with their loved ones while cruising? I can’t imagine going on a cruise without staying connected online.

The solution is the AT&T cruise package, allowing you to stay connected with your loved ones during the voyage. You can make calls, send SMS, and share your stories on the Internet without hassle.

In today’s guide, I will discuss two major cruise packages offered by AT&T and compare this service with the cruise ship’s Wi-Fi. By the end of this, you’ll have the lowdown to decide which option is right for you.

What Is AT&T Cruise Package?

AT&T Cruise Package

One of the biggest hurdles on cruise ships is cellular connectivity; to overcome this, the AT&T cruise package saves your day.

The American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) cruise packages offer reliable cellular connectivity onboard, so you can make calls, send SMS, and use the Internet while sailing.

If you are a phone addict and live mostly on phone calls to run the business, AT&T is the best bet for you

AT&T covers over 175 cruise ships, so whether you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean , Carnival , Norwegian , or any other cruise line, AT&T has got you covered.

On top of that, AT&T offers just two major packages, so you don’t need to immerse yourself in confusing cruise packages. Plus, cruisers can enjoy unlimited calls and SMS. The only restriction comes to data.

On my last Royal Caribbean cruise, I snagged their Voom Internet package —it’s cool, but no international calls or texts. That’s why I opted for the AT&T cruise package that allows unlimited call minutes and SMS. Game-changer!

Types Of AT&T Cruise Package

AT&T offers two main cruise packages for smooth cellular connectivity. Both packages are available at reasonable prices and last for 30 days– which is a huge plus.

1- AT&T Cruise Basic

The first is the AT&T Cruise Basic package, which costs you $60 for 30 days. This one is a lighter package and the best option for those who just are phone-detox sailors.

With this basic package, you will get 100 minutes for calling and unlimited texts to stay connected with your family.

Unfortunately, the AT&T Cruise Basic package has only 100 MB of Internet, which is scant. So, once you open any streaming app, the MBs will fly in the blink of an eye. And if you forget to turn off data roaming, your account might take a hit with some extra charges. Watch out for that!

This package is not for you if you’re a heavy internet user. Instead, you can opt for the cruise wifi package along with the AT&T cruise basic package.

2- AT&T Cruise Plus Package

The second one is the AT&T Cruise Plus package. It costs you $100 for 30 days and is the best companion for sailors, offering unlimited test calls and SMS.

So, if you’re a business person who talks and texts with your clients daily, this package fits you perfectly. With unlimited call minutes, you don’t need to worry about draining minutes.

Regarding the Internet, it offers 1GB of data, which is insufficient for Internet buddies. But you rarely use the Internet; the 1GB of data is sufficient to update WhatsApp status, send streaks on Snapchat, or check emails.

Again, streaming with 1GB of internet data is not the best deal, so you must stay away from streaming services to secure your MBs. Remember that for an extra 100MB of internet usage, you will be charged $10.

How AT&T Cruise Package Works?

How AT&T Cruise Package Works

AT&T operates over a satellite, so you don’t need to worry about lagging during the sailing.

AT&T works on “Cellular at sea”– a ship’s cellular network that uses a satellite or VSAT connection. Almost every cruise ship has “Cellular at sea,” so when you embark on the cruise, the phone automatically gets connected to the network.

You should turn off your data roaming when you’re on a cruise because the cost of using the “Cellular at sea” is too high. But you need to fret if you have got the AT&T cruise package.

Your AT&T cruise package will automatically start working after 9 – 11 nautical miles from the shore. And you can use your phone for making calls and send SMS right after that. There is no lagging in their service because now your cruise is the mobile hub; whether you’re on a top deck or in your stateroom, the AT&T network works seamlessly.

Can I Use AT&T Cruise Package On a Port?

No, the AT&T cruise package won’t work outside of the cruise. So, if you’re on a port excursion, you have to consider other alternatives.

The AT&T cruise package only applies while sailing; the standard international roaming charges are steep if you use it at ports. The best solution is to go with the AT&T International Day Pass, which costs you $10 and offers unlimited calls, text, and Internet.

The good news is the AT&T International Day pass is applicable for 210+ destinations. So Whether you’re strolling in Cuba , Puerto Rico , or the Bahamas , you can stay connected with the world.

Alternatively, you can use free Wi-Fi at cafes, hotels, and restaurants. But I suggest you go with the A&T day pass for

Can I Use AT&T Outside Of The USA

AT&T services work seamlessly in more than 210 countries, and their data coverage is available in more than 190 countries. So, if you’re outside the USA and sailing somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean or Caribbean Sea, the AT&T network will work smoothly.

Even though the data speeds and coverage might vary by destination, performance remains smooth throughout the voyage.

So, it’s a good idea to go for the AT&T International Day pass because it will allow you to stay connected while enjoying the unforgettable sea views.

Is AT&T Available On All Cruise Ships?

AT&T is available on over 175 cruise ships. Here is a list of some famous cruises that support the AT&T network.

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean Cruise Line
  • Azamara Club Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Celestial Cruises
  • Cordelia Cruises
  • Dream Cruises
  • Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
  • Holland American Line
  • Hapag Lloyd Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • P & O Cruises
  • P & O Ferries
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

  • Sky Sea Cruise Line
  • Sear Cruises

AT&T Pay Per Use Rates?

AT&T has a very steep pay-per-use rate. You will get overcharged if you don’t have any international or cruise package and you’re still using AT&T services.

That’s why turning off data roaming is recommended if you didn’t subscribe to the AT&T cruise package.

Also, you must know the AT&T pay-per-rates before subscribing to their international and cruise packages. You will have to pay extra charges for overusing their services.

AT&T charges $1/minute for extra calling minutes in Canada and Mexico, $2 for European countries, and $3 for the rest of the world. For extra text, you have to pay $0.50/message; for the Internet, the charges are $2.05/MB, which is very high.

Is AT&T Better Than Cruise Ship’s wifi?

Almost every cruise ship offers Internet packages to stay connected. Among all the cruises here, I would prefer to talk about Voom– the Royal Caribbean Internet Package.

I’m a big fan of Royal Caribbean and frequently book their cruises for fun. The Internet package that RC offers is called “Voom,” and we usually go for this package.

For $26/day, you will get the “Voom Surf & Stream” package to let you enjoy the Internet without any barriers. But most cruisers go for the Voom. That’s why its speed is slower at certain spots on board.

During sunrise, the speed is quite high, and you can stream in 4k. But the speed gets slow after the evening, and you will sometimes face lagging issues.

In contrast, AT&T has very fast Internet because few people opt for this option. But unluckily, AT&T doesn’t offer enough Internet to fulfill the needs.

And if you’re an Internet guy, you should subscribe to Ship’s wifi package.

Some Tips To Save Your Data Usage

If you have subscribed to the AT&T cruise package, you must face the scarcity of Internet MBs. So, the first thing that you should do is saving. Here are some tips to save your data usage onboard.

  • Avoid Streaming: Streaming is like a killer of MBs, so totally avoid streaming if you’re on an AT&T cruise package.
  • Disable Unused apps: Try to disable the functionality of unused apps; these apps also use data to update their information.
  • Use Wi-Fi When Available: If you also have the cruise’s Wi-Fi package, use that. And don’t forget to turn off data roaming to save MBs. A few cruise lines offer free Wi-Fi in some spots to consider using.
  • Turn off the Data Roaming: When you’re not using cellular data, turn off the data roaming.
  • Beware of Data Usage: Keep an eye on the usage of your MBs. The iMessage will let you know about the status of your AT&T cruise Internet package, so keep an eye on that.

Is AT&T Worth Its Option?

AT&T is a good option for those who love to make phone calls every time or deal with their clients on phone calls. You will stay connected with your business partners, clients, and love with unlimited calls, minutes, and SMS.

However, the AT&T cruise package’s dark side is a lack of Internet MBS. It offers 1GB of data in the premium plus package, which is not enough for you if you’re a heavy Internet user.

In a nutshell, I suggest you go with an AT&T basic cruise package and also purchase the dedicated ship’s wifi package for better connectivity and internet experience.
