The Back Roads Alentejo tour takes you through agricultural Central Portugal, with wide expanses of olive trees, vineyards, citrus groves, and cork oak plantations. In addition, we will travel to medieval towns with their defensive architecture of castles, churches, and plazas; many are UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites. After we greet you at the Lisbon airport, we begin our journey to historic Palmela, then midway in our travels, climb up to the Eagle’s Nest that is Marvão, and finally we will arrive again in historic Lisbon. Towns we will experience along the way include Évora, Estremoz, Elvas, Mérida, Spain, Marvão and Lisbon by largely peaceful, scenic back roads. This is a region with its own pace and time, with echoes of past battles beyond the walled cities created by the tenacity of the people, where culture and spirituality take on a unique character.

We will begin our travels near the Atlantic Coast and the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park with a visit to historic Palmela. We will stay within the castle walls at the modernized monk’s refectory to gain a more intimate flavor of that time. The site still retains its historic qualities and we will spend time there, roaming the ramparts and tiled church.

Heading inland from the coast, briefly we will visit historic Évora, designated a UNESCO site in 1986. The remains of its Roman temple and Évora’s Cathedral draw you into its historic center. We will also visit a small local studio that produces extraordinary clay figures called the Bonecos of Estremoz, whose designs and production date back to the 17th century. This art form was recognized in 2017 as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. From Évora, we journey to Estremoz, a UNESCO city, where we will visit a tile museum and sample some local wines.

Moving closer to Spain, we visit Elvas, another UNESCO city that is the home to some of the most impressive fortifications in Europe. Traveling across the border briefly into Spain, we will visit the Roman structures at Mérida, another UNESCO site! These magnificent ruins demonstrate a way of life around 1 BC that consisted of the Temples of Diana, massive Roman amphitheater that held up to15,000 spectators who witnessed fights between gladiators and wild beasts and the Roman theater. Mérida was one of the largest capitals of the Romans and was established in 25 BC.

Back in Alentejo, we will find concentrations of megalithic stones, like dolmen that mark places that were funerary in nature and some others of unknown meaning. These fascinating structures signify that pre-historic habitation occurred here as well. We will visit a few of these.

For most of our journey, we will travel through this region of world-class wines where five of Alentejo’s eight demarcated wine regions are located. Of course we will be sampling delicious wines from the region along our route.

Heading north from Elvas, we cross sections of the Serra de Mamede, a remote mountain range with diverse geology and an historic line of impressive defensive settlements, erected to protect the border from hostilities. The walled town of Marvão or the many ancient dolmens will recall the magic of this region. Around the hills, white-washed houses stand on hills, castles evoke past battles and the gardens we will pass bear witness to the Moorish influences that shaped both people and Nature. Here, we will also discover lilac fields, watch unique birds and find unforgettable landscapes in the mountain, in the cork oak forests, or on the plains in the olive groves. The freedom and relaxation we will discover passing along these lightly-traveled country roads will evoke a feeling that will stay with you long after our tour is over.

Come join us on this exciting cultural and natural adventure for a unique look into the past and the present of a region that has maintained its authenticity for centuries!

DAY ONE: GETTING STARTED

Thursday, march 20, 2025.

Transfer from Lisbon Airport to Marvão

Transfer from Lisbon Airport to Palmela

Overnight in Palmela

Meals: Lunch or Dinner on your own

After we gather everyone at the Lisbon Airport Meeting Point, we will hit the road and head toward the coast. An hour or so later, we arrive in Palmela, a scenic hill town that became the seat of the Order of St. James in 1423. Here King Sancho I gave the castle at Palmela to the Order of St. James, after they conquered the castle from the Moors. Its highly strategic promontory, overlooking the wooded natural park and the city of Setúbal, provides wonderful high views of the surrounding area. We will rest within the castle walls, allowing time for you to wander the Castle and the Church and Monastery of St. James, appreciate the scenic views or have a drink in the monastery’s courtyard.

DAY TWO: ENJOYING THE BLUE COAST

Friday, march 21, 2025.

Morning Transfer to Olive Oil Museum and Return to hotel in Marvão

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch included, Dinner on your own

Traditional Tile Painting Workshop and Factory Tour

Welcome Seaside Lunch

After a sumptuous breakfast, we will head out to a local tile shop where we will be taught to paint traditional and modern designs on tiles. Tomorrow we will retrieve our tiles to take with us. After the workshop, we will be given a walking tour of the tile production area. The Serra da Arrábida Natural Park awaits us as we make our way down some winding roads to the waterfront. There we will have a feast of fresh fish or other selectionS, overlooking the water. There is no rush to hurry through lunch and we will enjoy the peaceful, friendly atmosphere and the delicious food; if you select the grilled seafood (we selected the sea bass), it most likely was caught just that morning in the waters before you. After lunch, we head back up the hill through the Natural Park to once again enjoy our Castle retreat for the evening.

DAY THREE: ALENTEJO WINE COUNTRY

Saturday, march 22, 2025.

Overnight in Arraiolos

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included, lunch on your own

Palace Tour and Wine-tasting

Traditional Portuguese Dinner

After breakfast, we check out of our Palmela lodgings and we return to Azeitão to pick up our tiles and to tour a 14th century Palace and Quinta (farm). The architecture id reminiscent of the Palace that displays 15th and 16th century tiles, evoking Moorish designs and houses furnitishings and decor that reflect the influences of the Portuguese Discoveries, former owner’s travels to the rest of Europe, the coast of Africa and the East. The private, manicured gardens are surrounded by vineyards as well and the setting of this singular gem provides a relaxing respite from the busy streets beyond. We return to the winery to try some local wines, including the regional moscatel.

After this activity, we continue our journey into Alentejo. Alentejo is famous for its vast plains, numerous cork trees and olive groves and vineyards that stretch across the horizon, almost for ever. This is one of Portugal’s most important wine-producing regions, whose wine production dates back 4,000 years. The occupying Romans (from the 3rd BC to the 4th century ACE) introduced fermentation through the use of amphora clay vessels. The Moors suppressed wine culture here until they were driven out in 1093. Wine production was resurrected for real after the Carnation Revolution overturned the Salazar Dictatorship (1937-1974) in 1974. Today, there are 14 designated wine regions in Portugal and the Azores and Madeira Islands; Alentejo was made a demarcated wine region in 1988. Today, we travel to Arraiolos, a short distance outside of Êvora, a village that specilaizes in traditional woven rugs. After we check in and have a chance to relax, we will walk together into the village to enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal.

DAY FOUR: COUNTRY OF STANDING STONES

Sunday, march 23, 2025.

Overnight in Bencatel

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch included, Dinner on your own (Redondo)

Visit to the Standing Stones:  Almendres Cromlech (Cromeleque dos Almendres) and Interpretive Center

Brief Visit to Évora

Picnic Lunch and Visit to Bonecos de Estremoz (traditional clay figurines): Demonstration and Studio Tour

Wine-tasting at Local Winery

A visit to the cromlech is a surprising experience. It is a megalithic complex and is the largest existing group of structured menirs (standing stones) in the Iberian Peninsula (and one of the largest in Europe). The construction of these structures dates back to 6000 BC but were only discovered officially in 1966 by a Portuguese geologist. It is unknown what the exact intent of the stone’s grouping is; however, research suggests that the space may have had a religous or ceremonial purpose or may have functioned as a primitive astrological observatory. We will never know for sure but the experience of walking through these megaliths is unforgettable.

By now, you will have noticed that this part of Portugal is dotted with thousands of evergreen cork oaks (Quercus suber). Alentejo, Portugal is the world’s top producer of cork wine stoppers; cork grown from the evergreen cork oak (sobreiro) has been sustainably harvested since the 1700s. With 2700 square miles under cultivation, groves throughout Alentejo produce 30 million corks per day. Cork bark is a versatile material and also is used for insulation, flooring, traditional crafts, such as cork bowls, handbags, furniture, jewelry, and decorated boxes. We will probably see piles of harvested cork bark and organized in towering piles as we pass through some villages.

Today, we briefly explore the historic center of Évora, designated a UNESCO site in 1986. The Roman Temple ruins from the 2nd or 3rd century still stand adjacent to the 12th century Cathedral and the Museum of Évora, once a Palace of the Governors in the 16th century. The now highly fragmented Roman inner walls around the medieval city, date to 1st century, while additional walls date from Moorish and Medieval times.

Before we arrive for our afternoon wine-tasting, we will take a break near São Miguel de Machede to have a picnic and to visit a small studio that produces the Bonecos of Estremoz. We will be able to observe the complicated process required to produce these figurines and the significance of the over 100 traditional designs captured in clay. This home studio is reminiscent of the studios that began producing these figures in the 1700s.

We will pass through Redondo and its surrounding quaint countryside of farmland and rolling hills, where we will have dinner at a local restaurant (on your own). Vineyards surround the town and it is the heart of one of the region’s demarcated wine sub-regions. We will overnight at a country inn closeby where you will probably hear the neighboring sheep bells the next morning. We will be housed in small, modern bungalows that still retain the flavor of the Portuguese countryside.

DAY FIVE: ENJOYING THE COUNTRYSIDE AND A UNESCO TOWN

Monday, march 24, 2025.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included, Lunch on your own

Visit to Estrmoz Castle, briefly – UNESCO site

Visit to Tile Museum, including a Wine Tasting

BBQ Dinner at the Country Inn

After breakfast at our inn, we will venture to Estremoz via the backroads today, leading us past the Serra D’Ossa Mountain Range. These low traffic roads will allow us to soak up the landscape before we enter another medieval, UNESCO-designated town. Yesterday, we visited a small studio that produces bonecos and today we will visit the place where this craft began. Since the 16th century, the town has been known as a pottery center, including hand-painted terracotta pottery and typical designs from royal times. The local traditional craftsmanship of historical Estremoz clay figurines, known as bonecos (painted clay dolls of saints and peasants depicted in daily tasks, such as selling eggs, roasting chestnuts or other typical activities) was recognized in 2017 as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Estremoz, still dominated by its medieval castle, is another hill town and celebrates an annual Baroque Festival that brings its history to life! We will briefly explore the castle but we will spend more time at a local tile museum that houses Portuguese and Spanish tiles that date back 800 years to the 20th century. The congenial atmosphere of the museum and courtyard is only augmented when we realize that the price of admission also includes a wine tasting!

After we have decided what wines we are having for dinner, we will return to our country inn for an outside BBQ.

DAY SIX: WALKING THROUGH HISTORY: ENCOUNTERING THE ROMAN EMPIRE IN SPAIN

Tuesday, march 25, 2025.

Overnight in Elvas, Portugal

Meals: Breakfast included, Lunch and Dinner on your own

Visit Mérida, Spain – UNESCO site

The Roman Empire expanded its settlements throughout Portugal and Spain during the 3rd to 4th centuries BC. The Romans invaded and conqueored Spain in 218 BC and Portugal in 210 BC. Mérida was a large Roman city, founded in 25 BC, under the name of Emerita Augusta after the Roman Emperor Augustus to serve as a retreat for legions of Roman war veterans (hence, emeritus). It served as the Roman capital of Lusitania (Portugal) and then as the capital for all Hispania (including Spain) during the 4th century. The structures we can presently witness in Mérida include the remains of a Roman theater and amphitheater (built around 105 AD for entertainment and other purposes), a Roman amphitheater house (mansion, really, with numerous mosaic floors built at the end of the 1st century AD), the circus (built at the end of the 1st century AD for entertainment purposes), the Temple of Diana (built and others (that we won’t be visiting). The Roman Empire retreated from this part of the world after other invading parties forced them out and eventually was under Muslim rule in 713 AD until approximately 1230 AD. The rest of the Roman city is still buried under the present day one. There area myriad of outdoor cafes around the theater for lunch on your own.

After a full day of sightseeing in Mérida, we head back to Portugal to our hotel in Elvas.

DAY SEVEN: WALKING THROUGH HISTORY: PORTUGUESE GARRISON BORDER TOWN AND FORTIFICATIONS

Wednesday, march 26, 2025.

Overnight in Crato

Visits to two UNESCO Fortifications and Walking Tour

Elvas sits on the Spanish border, an historically strategic location where defending the Portuguese border from the Spanish became a constant reality during the Wars of Reconstruction during the 17th century. It is protected by two magnificent star forts constructed and enhanced during the 18th century. We will visit both forts. The fortresses construction was from 1763 to 1792. Surrounded by medieval walls, these forts are considered to be two of the world’s most powerful bulwark fortresses. Elvas was designated a UNESCO site in 2012 as “Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications” and represents the largest bulwarked dry ditch system in the world. We will walk from one fort to the other to experience the flavor of the area and continue our journery towards the mountains after our walk and lunch.

Leaving Elvas, we continue through this rural area, rich in olive groves and cork oak trees, toward the town of Crato. Much of Crato was sacked and burned by the Spanish in 1662 but a few buildings remain rebuilt, such as the Mother Church (Igreja Matriz), found at the end of a road lined with orange trees, and inside decorated with 18th century tiles ( azulejos ) depicting fishing, hunting and traveling scenes. Crato remains a peaceful village at the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede (in 1989, 120 square miles of the Serra de São Mamede was designated a Nature Park by the EUROPARC Federation). From Crato, we pass through Flôr da Rosa to reach our hotel, a town known as a pottery manufacturing center that produces a round cooking bowl called the caçoila. We will be staying at the Flor da Rosa Monastery, the 1356 monastery-fortress of the Order of the Knights of Malta near Crato. Within the monastery, you will find two small museums that tell the story of the monastery and surrounding area that you can peruse on your own.

The Portuguese Office of Tourism is located also within the monastery and just ask one of the employees to show you the historic church that resides within those walls. The tour will be worth your time and will open your eyes. Otherwise, relax by the pool with wonderful views of the castle and have a snack in the bar.

DAY EIGHT: ASCENDING INTO THE SERRA (MOUNTAINS)

Thursday, march 27, 2025.

Overnight in Marvão

Visit to the Jewish Quarter (Judaría) in Castelo de Vide

After beakfast, we will be stop in the city of Castelo de Vide for a visit before we head up the mountain to Marvão. Castelo de Vide, a spa town since Roman times, is sited on the green slopes of the Serra de São Mamede. One of the sources of the curative waters is the Renaissance era Village Fountain ( Fonte da Vila ), located below the Castle and the maze-like Jewish Quarter ( Judaría ), which dates to the 13th century. A small synagogue, now a Tourism Office and museum, lies behind fine Gothic doors in a narrow, steep cobble-stoned alleyway. We will begin our guided tour at the bridge that was the entry into Portugal for Sephardic Jews escaping the Spanish Inquisition in the 16th century.

We leave Castelo de Vide and climb 2800 feet to the medieval mountaintop village of Marvão. It is one of Portugal’s most spectacular fortified towns. It is perched on the top of a wall of granite like an eagle’s nest and built into the granite itself. It is the only Portuguese fort to have never been overcome by invading armies. Once there, you will understand why. Marvão still maintains its fortress-like character; one enters the village through gigantic double doors flanked by watchtowers, curtain walls and battlements. The castle that overlooks the town, dates to the late 13th century and the buttresses were remodeled in the 17th century. The views from the Castle show a vast panorama of the rugged Spanish mountains to the east, the Castelo Branco region and Serra da Estrela mountains to the north and the Serra de São Mamede in the south. Within minutes, we are instantly transported back to a different time and place. The 13th century Church of St. Mary ( Igreja de Santa Maria ), now houses the Tourism Office and the Municipal Museum where you will find megaliths, copies of old maps of Marvão and Roman stelae or stone monuments to the Dead. Other churches date to the Renaissance.

The greatest attraction in Marvão is the unspoiled medieval atmosphere of the immaculately white-washed houses and its steep and narrow lanes (some carved out of stone itself) that lead to the magnificent 13th century castle that seems to spring from the rocks. What a place with its manicured castle garden and 360 degree views! Most rewarding and exciting of all is climbing up on the walls, battlements and towers for the impressive views of the Alentejo plains and border of Spain. Stay for the stunning sunset and evening peace of the village.

Feel to roam Marvão until we reconvene for dinner together at our hotel.

DAY NINE: RETURNING TO LISBON

Friday, march 28, 2025.

Overnight in Lisbon

Visit to and Lunch at Olive Oil Museum

After our breakfast in the hotel, we will venture back to Lisbon but before we leave this scenic region, we will stop a heritage museum that tells the story of olive oil production and the importance of the olive oil trade in Portugal. We meet at the museum for a Guided Tour of the museum dedicated to olive oil production, which is followed by lunch with an olive oil tasting.

Once back on the road, we will arrive at our hotel in the hilly Alfama section of Lisbon and you will have the rest of your afternoon to explore this pleasant and historic area.

DAY TEN: EXCITING LISBON

Saturday, march 29, 2025.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included, Lunch on your own Farewell Dinner at Local Fado Club (Beverages included)

After a leisurely breakfast, you will have the day to wander to your heart’s delight in Lisbon. Lisbon is a wonderful city. Nestled amongst seven hills, it offers a myriad of opportunities to experience its colorful maritime history, wander through magnificent religious architecture, such as the Geronimos Monastery or sit in a bustling sidewalk cafe drinking coffee (or something a little bit stronger). Enjoy your day! We will reconvene in the evening to celebrate our tour together with a hearty traditional Portuguese meal that combines with a Fado show of singing and fun in between four courses of authentic dinnerfare. Fado (portuguese for destiny or fate) is a kind of lamenting Portuguese “Blues” and was born in the 1820s in the bohemian sections of Lisbon, specifically in the Alfama where we’re staying. Times were hard and song was a refuge from the pain of poor and heart-breaking daily life. Amália Rodrigues or simply known as “Amália”, popularized Fado in Portugal in the 1940s, making Fado a global sensation. In modern times, Fado has evolved but still retains a sense of meloncholy and resignation. Fado is designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We will walk back together to the hotel for a restful night’s sleep.

DAY ELEVEN: GOING HOME

Sunday, march 30, 2025.

Meal: Breakfast included

Morning Transfer to Lisbon Airport

At the designated time, we’ll take you to the Lisbon Airport by private car/van.

Location: douro valley - casa vale do douro.

The scenic, vineyard-dotted landscapes of the Douro Valley make a serene backdrop for our free day today. Enjoy the day relaxing by the pool at our hotel or exploring the surrounding landscape on a leisurely hike – there’s plenty of time to indulge in a drop or two of the region’s famous wines before we reconvene for a delicious dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Douro Valley – Amarante And Penafiel – Braga

Location: douro valley - casa vale do douro, amarante, penafiel, braga, accommodation: hotel, vila galé collection braga (or similar).

After breakfast, we’ll head to Amarante – a sleepy riverside town dominated by its striking arched bridge and 16th-century São Gonçalo Church. We’ll take some time to marvel at the lofty interiors of the church before exploring the town at our leisure. After lunch, we’ll set a course for Penafiel where we’ll savour a glass of the region’s famous green wine and learn more about the winemaking process. An evening of leisure awaits once we arrive in lovely Braga.

Day 9: Braga – Guimarães – Braga

Location: braga, guimaraes, braga.

This morning we’ll set our sights on Guimarães – where we’ll learn about the castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the historic city centre on a guided walking tour. After our tour, we’ll have time to roam the medieval streets at our own pace before returning to Braga for an afternoon of free time. While you’re here, be sure to tick off the Bom Jesus Sanctuary – it’s one of Portugal’s most famous attractions for good reason! This evening, we’ll tuck into one last dinner together – with a traditional folk performance as the grand finale.

Day 10: Braga – Porto

Location: braga, porto.

Our final destination will be Porto, where we’ll tick off some important landmarks – including the Clérigos Tower, Aliados Avenue, the Ribeira district and the cathedral on an orientation tour. Later this afternoon we’ll say our goodbyes as our journey comes to an end.

Reviews from Travellers on this Tour

Value for money, a pity about the weather

Loved the itinerary. Accomodation was fabulous and included lots of surprises. Just one small suggestion, would have been great to commence the tour the night before so we could meet and greet everyone before setting off on the tour. Would have liked to see a little more of Lisbon

Our guide was very knowledgeable and looked after our group well. I felt cared for as the lone vegetarian she made sure I had menu choices to suit ahead of the meal venue. Much appreciated. All our tour guides were exceptional. Our group melded well which added to the fun. Accommodation all memorable in a good way. Coach comfortable and drivers smooth.

Excellent tour. Portugal was very interesting and we saw many beautiful places. We stayed in very good accommodation.

This was not a shopping trip and I just bought a few souvenirs

A lot of history but what do the people feel about their country!

There were too many small towns where we stopped for lunch with absolutely nothing to do. Most shops were closed. 2hours plus was too long at theses destinations. Tour guide was friendly, but a bit indecisive. Lisbon, Nazare, Duoro Valley and Oporto were excellent. Fatima was good too, but only if you were interested.

Best Road Trips in Portugal: 10 Super Scenic Routes

As much as I love city breaks, I will never say no to a road trip. One of my favorite scenic drives was in Portugal, a perfect destination to explore by car. Since then, I’m in an endless search for the best road trips in Portugal that I can add to my bucket list.

With the help of a few fellow bloggers, I finally have an epic roundup of road trip ideas, which I’m super excited to share with you. They are all adjustable, so whether you have a few days or full 2 weeks in Portugal , you’ll find your inspiration here.

10 of the Best Road Trips in Portugal

The algarve.

Contributed by Linn from Brainy Backpackers

Route: Faro to Lagos.

The south coast of Portugal is incredibly beautiful and offers so much to see and do. Going on an  Algarve road trip  is a great way to explore as much as possible.

For a one-week road trip, I suggest you start in Faro and end in Lagos, Portugal . You can easily drive back to Faro in 1 hour and 45 minutes to return your rental car and get on your flight back.

But on this seemingly short stretch, there is so much fun, and you should at least spend a couple of days in Albufeira, Carvoeiro, and Lagos.

Not all places are easily accessed by public transport, so a car is a must if you want to experience the best of the coastline.

You can spend a day in Faro and then enjoy the best things to do in Albufeira or get from Faro’s airport to Albufeira and save Faro for the last day of your road trip.

Praia da Marinha

Get ready to see some spectacular beaches along the way, take the astounding Seven Hanging Valleys coastal hike (aka one of the best hikes in Portugal ), or paddleboard to the most mesmerizing cave in Portugal, Benagil Cave . Walk the boardwalk from Carvoeiro to the Algar Seco’s natural pool and caves.

Want to learn how to surf or scuba dive? Lagos is the place. This quaint town is just a short driving distance from the spectacular Sagres cliffs and the Ponta da Piedade cliffs, which I personally think are the most beautiful cliffs in the Algarve.

Best scenic drives in Portugal - Ponta da Piedade

São Miguel Island, the Azores

Contributed by Megan from Megan Starr

Route: Circular from Ponta Delgada.

One of the most scenic drives in Portugal is on the main island in the Azores, Sao Miguel. The best way to conduct this road trip is to start in the capital city called Ponta Delgada and circumnavigate the island.

I recommend taking a minimum of four days to complete the road trip as you will have many amazing stops on your  Sao Miguel itinerary .

From Ponta Delgada, you’ll want to head to the west of Sao Miguel toward Sete Cidades. This area is known for its gorgeous views, volcanic crater lakes, and more.

If you’re keen to stay on this side of the island, there are plenty of accommodations around Sete Cidades .

Best road trips in Portugal - Sao Miguel Island

From there, you can start making your way to the north on the second day. The north coast is rugged and actually has the best weather, so enjoy the thermal pools, the views over the high cliffs, and a kind of hidden gem in Portugal called Salto do Cabrito.

The best place to stay on the north shore of Sao Miguel is at Sao Vicente Lodge or Santa Barbara Eco-Resort . Both are fantastic places with epic views.

From there, head to the east of Sao Miguel, a geothermal wonderland. Furnas is the highlight of the east, where you’ll find many natural parks, botanical gardens, and the chance to enjoy cozido das furnas , a local stew made underground with geothermal heat.

On your last day, head toward Ponta Delgada and stop at a few places along the way. If you’re feeling adventurous, try snorkeling or taking a tour to Vila Franco do Campo, a small islet in the sea.

End your road trip with some delicious food in the capital, Ponta Delgada, where you can enjoy the city life at an Azorean pace.

Alentejo Region

Contributed by Faye from Delve Into Europe

Route: Ėvora to Mertola, then onto the Algarve.

We had planned an  Alentejo road trip  for years because we thought it would be a great deal to see this rural province in southeast Portugal. It’s packed with whitewashed towns and medieval castles, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and some of the best Portugal scenery.

The only downside was that we didn’t have more time – we could easily have spent two weeks or more exploring the region.

It’s full of amazing places to stay, and we settled on three – the capital, Évora , and the fortified villages of Marvão and Monsaraz, both overlooking the Spanish border.

We also stopped at various places along the way, including the famous Saturday market of Estremoz, the stunning historic border city of Elvas, and the picturesque unexplored town of Castelo de Vide.

Marvao, a town in Portugal

Évora makes a great starting point, and it warrants a couple of days or more. The tight cobbled streets of the Old Town are incredible and lead to a superb 2nd century AD Roman temple and a fine concoction of a cathedral overlooking the whole scene.

Marvão is a magnificent mountaintop fortified village with one of the most spectacular castles in Europe, located high in the Serra de São Mamede range.

Monsaraz has a less dramatic setting but wins out on sheer beauty. We visited early in the season and had the whole village to ourselves at night, including the two main streets lined with stunning whitewashed buildings.

The view over the Basrragem do Alqueva lakes on the Spanish border at sunrise was unforgettable too.

Monsaraz Portugal

Lisbon to Porto

Route: Lisbon to Porto.

Starting off with a classic, a road trip from Lisbon to Porto is a must-have experience in Portugal.

From palaces and monasteries to ocean views and enchanting villages, this is a fantastic route that combines a little bit of everything. Excluding 2 days in Lisbon and 1- 2 days in Porto , you can complete it in 5-7 days.

Begin your journey in Cabo da Roca, Europe’s westernmost point (and one of the most Instagrammable spots in Portugal ), which provides some jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic coast.

Pena Palace Sintra Portugal

Continue to Sintra, where you’ll find the iconic Pena Palace and other visit-worthy Portuguese landmarks like the old town, the Palace of Quinta da Regaleira, and the Sintra National Palace.

There are also plenty of things to do in Ericeira , which you can visit after either Cabo da Roca or Sintra.

From there, you must spend at least half a day strolling through the alleys of the picture-perfect village of Obidos, lose yourself in the beauty of the Bussaco Forest, unwind in the coastal town of Espinho, and enjoy some Port wine-tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia.

This route covers some of the country’s greatest highlights and is suitable for every type of traveler, which is exactly what makes it one of the best drives in Portugal.

the village of obidos

Northern Portugal

Route: Circular from Porto.

Renting a car in Portugal is a fantastic way to explore its northern regions. Often overlooked, Northern Portugal is an incredible destination full of landmarks, vineyards, and scenic roads.

Start your journey with a couple of days in Porto , stroll through its colorful neighborhoods, sample some exquisite port wine, and visit its most amazing monuments like the Carmo Church and Bolsa Palace.

Continue to Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal, and then head to Barcelos, a town famous for the European legend of the Rooster of Barcelos. Next is the stunning city of Braga.

Braga has a lot to offer and can be a great weekend getaway destination, but most people visit it to admire the nearby religious complex of Bom Jesus do Monte.

The remarkable stairway consisting of over 570 stairs, along with the monastery at the top, is truly an impressive sight.

End your northern Portugal road trip with a day in Guimaraes (and its castles), the founding city of the kingdom of Portugal, and visit the charming town of Viana do Castelo.

Porto

Madeira Island

Contributed by Darek from Darek and Gosia

Route: Circular from Funchal.

If you love driving and looking for something unique, you have to go for a  road trip around Madeira Island .

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, this Portuguese island is known as the island of eternal spring – meaning it’s a perfect spring destination in Europe but is also great to visit at any time of the year!

You will start your trip in the capital of the island – Funchal. You should stay in Funchal for the night too and explore the main attractions of the city. Those will include the old town, the CR7 museum, and Monte Palace tropical garden.

You can also head to Praia Formosa, one of the best beaches in Madeira , located only a short drive away from the city.

A colorful house in Santana, Madeira

Start your second day on a high note – the Cabo Girao skywalk, which is one of the tallest viewing platforms in the world. Ponta do Pargo lighthouse and Porto Moniz and its natural pools will be the highlights of 3rd day on the road.

On the next day, explore the northern part of the island with its amazing viewpoints and São Vicente caves. You will be excited to see Casas Típicas de Santana on your 5th day, followed by one of the best hikes in Madeira – Ponta de São Lourenço.

If you love wildlife experiences, you could also book a tour of whale watching in Madeira .

For the best experience, it is recommended to dedicate at least 5-6 days to complete the road trip around Madeira, but nothing will stop you from spending a bit more time on the island – there are many incredible places to explore!

Porto Moniz, Madeira

Planning an off-season trip? Here’s a great Portugal winter itinerary and the best winter city breaks in Europe (including Lisbon)!

Central Portugal

Contributed by Cath from Passports and Adventures

Route: Circular from Faro/Lisbon/Porto.

Beginning and ending in Faro, one of the best road trips in Portugal is one in which you explore the Central Region of the country. This road trip can also start and end in Lisbon or Porto, covering the three airports in the country.

From Faro, this trip will take 7 days, covering towns and cities in Portugal from Lousã to Nazaré, Obidos to Sintra, and finally Lisbon before returning to Faro. The journey from Faro towards Lousã will take approximately 4-5 hours along the main A2 motorway.

Once in Lousã, you can explore the surrounding area, with a visit to the Praia Fluvial da Bogueira recommended. This river beach is great on a hot summer day, and you should also visit the small ruined castle.

After two nights, visit the historic city of Coimbra, which is only 30 minutes by car on your way to Nazaré.

Best drives in Portugal - Nazare from above

Nazaré is famous for its surfing thanks to the huge waves that roll in from the Atlantic Ocean. However, it is also a great base for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Sites nearby.

Three sites are easily accessible, being the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, and the convent in Tomar. You could visit them over one or two days.

After two nights, head south towards Sintra, stopping at the historic walled town of Obidos and the Buddha Eden Garden in Bacalhôa, before reaching Sintra.

Stay overnight and spend a day exploring the Pena Palace and Moorish castle before heading to your destination of Lisbon, where there is a wealth of things to explore during the two to three nights we recommend for your stay before returning to Faro.

This  7-day road trip exploring Central Portugal  is ideal for couples, families, and solo travelers.

The Monasteries of Central Portugal

Contributed by Cate from Sacred Wanderings

Route: Coimbra to the monasteries.

For an amazing road trip through three  UNESCO World Heritage Listed Monasteries in Central Portugal , begin in Coimbra.

To see all three monasteries, and have some leisure time to explore the countryside of Central Portugal, allot 3 days and 2 nights to this itinerary. Coimbra is easily accessed via train from Porto or Lisbon and is a wonderful city to explore in itself.

From Coimbra, head to Batalha. Batalha Monastery is a stunning place, with abandoned cloisters and once-in-a-lifetime architecture. From Batalha, you can easily reach Alcobaça for the night and stay in one of many incredibl e hotels .

Walking around by the monastery at night is a magical experience. There are also plenty of wonderful, intimate seafood restaurants to try.

Grab dinner in Alcobaça and then explore its UNESCO World Heritage monastery, very different from Batalha. Enjoy a leisurely drive through the countryside to get from Alcobaça to the city of Tomar.

Explore the city before heading to Tomar’s famous Convento de Cristo. A monastery and castle in one, the Convento is a wonderful place to explore with children or as adults.

Stay in adorable Tomar for the night at a leisurely pace, or turn in the rental car and take the train to Lisbon.

Convento de Christo

Costa Vicentina

Contributed by Paulina from Paulina on the Road

Route: Lisbon to Costa Vicentina.

One of the best road trips to undertake in Portugal is from Lisbon to Costa Vicentina in the south of the country. You can complete this road trip in a couple of days, stopping at various places in between.

When you happen to reach your destination, then one of the  best things to do in Costa Vicentina  is hiking the Rota Vicentina and admiring the beach and water views you get in the network of hiking trails spanning hundreds of kilometers.

One of the best hiking trails in the area is Almograve – Zambujeira do Mar, which provides 22.5 km (a little under 14 miles) of scenic landscapes. Another great hike is the Fisherman’s Trail.

When exploring the place, you should also visit tourist places like Zambujeira do Mar, Odemira, and Odeceixe.

On this road trip, you get to see a range of sceneries, from rolling hills and splendid wooded river valleys to olive groves and cultivated fields that back the exciting Atlantic coast.

When it comes to accommodation, you can book private rooms called ‘quartos,’ where the price ranges between 30-40 Euros.

Best Portugal road trips - Aerial view of Zambujeira do Mar

Porto to the Douro Valley

Contributed by Stephanie from History Fangirl

Route: Porto to the Douro Valley.

One of the best Portugal road trip ideas is the drive from Porto to the Douro Valley, one of the top wine regions in Portugal .

Starting in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Porto, you can pick up your rental car at the airport, but don’t skip visiting the city itself.

Sprawled over both sides of the Douro River, the city has one of the most beautiful (and colorful) skylines in the world. Set aside at least two days in Porto before moving on.

If you love seeing UNESCO sites, you will enjoy spending a day or two in the town of Guimaraes.

From here, you can move on to the Douro, where you should give yourself at least two days to enjoy  Port tasting at the Quintas (wineries) located alongside the river . The Duoro Valley is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and tasting wine has never been such an educational experience!

While the Duoro Valley is a joy to drive around, if you want to enjoy wine tasting once you get here, prepare to spend a bit extra on taxis or even hire a private driver to take you safely around the area.

If you have extra time, you can drive south and add a day in Fatima,  Tomar , or even Coimbra before heading back to Porto to drop off your car.

This site has inspired me! My husband and I planned on doing the “tour” thing, but really wanted to go at our own pace. He is a photographer and likes to stop if he sees something he wants to shoot pictures of! You have made my fears disappear! We are 66 & 70 years old, so we know there are a few limitations for us, but now I have a comfort level of striking out on our own using your itineraries and suggestions! We will probably go in October…any insights?

Your comment just made my day, Janet! Thank you! Portugal is a very tourist-friendly destination, so with the right preparation, you can totally explore it on your own. October is a great time to visit as there are fewer crowds than in summer and the weather is more than pleasant 🙂

Hello Or, I am planning an independent, self-guided road trip with my daughter sometimes in june-july for 12 days. I love your suggestions. Do you know any local and affordable agency in Portugal? I live in Augusta, GA, America.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Christine! I’m so happy you liked this post 🙂 Are you referring to a self-drive tour agency? I usually plan my own trips, so I don’t have any personal experience with these companies. If you want to share your budget (you can email me), I can try to consult some colleagues.

You’re welcome!

Thanks for the tips, I’ll read more when it’s time to prepare for our trip to Spain and Portugal.

You’re welcome 🙂 I’m here if you have any question.

I’ve always wanted to do a longer trip through Portugal after i did an Algarve road trip. This is so useful and has so mucj inspo for when I can next go back!!

I’m happy it was inspiring! Portugal definitely deserves to be visited over and over again 🙂

This is a great guide – Portugal is so high on my bucket list. I’ve only ever heard good things about it 🙂

Thank you! Portugal is truly amazing, and I think a road trip is the best way to explore it 🙂

We LOVE road trips! We spent a couple of weeks road tripping around Spain and Portugal last year, but clearly we need to go back. The monastery and coast hike look amazing.

I clearly love road trips too 🙂 I hope you get to go back soon!

We’ve done a road trip from Lisbon to Porto passing by Fatima, Aveiro and Cabo da Roca. I want to come back to explore more of those beautiful places! Great guide 🙂

That sounds like a great road trip 🙂 I’m glad you liked this post!

I love going on road trips. We stopped in Portugal while doing a road trip of southern Spain, but only for a few hours so I would love to go back!

Yeah, a few hours are definitely not enough! I hope you get to go back soon 🙂

OMG! Is it possible to say that I want to eat these pics? 😀 Why does Portugal have to look to appetizing and beautiful?

I think you’ve described it accurately – appetizing 😛

Amazing itinerary! I went to Lisbon a few years back & have been dying to go back to Portugal! There are so many beautiful places to see!

Thank you! And yes – there’s too much to see lol

The hikes and info were great, even though some last minute changes were necessary due to trail closures. We had a fun, varied group of 13 and the logistics all worked well. Portugal in Depth Tour

Portugal in Depth

We thoroughly enjoyed our Globus - Best of Portugal tour! Our tour guide, Rui, was exceptional and created an engaging and fun-loving atmosphere! His abundance of historical and present-day knowledge of each location was interesting and impressive. The tour was well-paced and all but two hotels were wonderful with appetizing food for breakfast/dinner. Hotel Mundial in Lisbon was by far the best accommodations with comfortable beds and ample AC. Porto snd Algarve hotels were good as well. The hotels used for our single-night stays we're less comfortable and food was not up to par. The hotel in Vissou had issues with low functioning AC and uncomfortable beds and in Evora the dinner was poor quality. All in all, this tour was fun, engaging, and well-run. The tour locations and optional excursions were fantastic and provided many enriching experiences. Portugal is a beautiful country and we fell in love with the people, culture, food, and sights. We look forward to our return and highly recommend the Globus - Best of Portugal tour.

We were pleasantly surprised to be on a tour of only 6 people. Our driver, Joao Pablo (John), was excellent. He was so knowledgeable and personable and had some great recommendations for us. We all had a great time and will definitely request “John” when we return to Portugal!

What people love about portugal tours.

The two major cities , Lisbon and Porto portion were not done justice to. Just an orientation in the bus did not do justice to the town's. Instead of the winnery tour a historical places tour would have been better. Lisbon also, except for half a monastery ( without the chapel) what did we see? Thankfully we spent extra days in Lisbon ans explored the city. The other towns were
