Battles are the Networked Band, or perhaps the-band-as-network. An island chain linked by a unique combination of artistry, experimentation, technology and singular focus. A band that holds computerized loops in their brains, leaves sweat on their machines and whose sonic heartbeat is almost brutally human.

Formed in 2002, Ian Williams, Dave Konopka, Tyondai Brazton and John Stanier all came together from a variety of math rock and alternative metal groups including Don Caballero and Helmet, and were keen to play the kind of uncompromisingly experimental music they’d cut their teeth playing.

However, their other intention was to combine it with influences from indie rock and electronica, rather than other forms of heavy music. Wisely, the band took their time writing and recording their first releases, waiting two years before releasing their debut record “EP C” on Monitor Records. After a further three EPs were released over the next three years, the band signed to Warp Records in 2007 for the release of their debut album “Mirrored”. The album was a critical smash all over the world, thanks in part to the success of its debut single “Atlas”, which was hailed as one of the best singles of the year by the end of 2007.

The band spent the next couple of years as one of the most critically acclaimed acts of their time, playing sold out shows wherever they could and getting songs on the soundtrack to everything from Skins to Twilight to the All Tomorrow’s Parties documentary. Following singer Braxton’s departure in 2010, the band continued as an instrumental act, drafting in vocalists like Gary Numan, Kazu Makino, and Yamantaka Eye to sing on their next album, 2011’s “Gloss Drop”. Since, the band have remained an unmissable live act, and one of the most fascinating indie rock acts of their generation.

Dave Konopka, Ian Williams and John Stanier have turned the tables on themselves this time, confronted their own ideas of what Battles is – and on their third album (release in September 2015), have willed an answer to that question into existence. As the name might imply, La Di Da Di is a mushrooming monolith of repetition. It is an organic techno thrum of nearly infinite loops that refuse to remain consistent. The rhythmic genus of Battles is here as ever; full frontal, heightened and unforgiving – the gauntlet through which melody and harmony must pass, assailed at every turn.

Live reviews

New York experimental rock outfit Battles have achieved a great balance between style and substance in their live performance. Their synonymous black and white lighting mixture offers a nice monotone effect to the whole evening and really sets a mood within the venue. It is pretty entrancing at times as you imagine watching some bizarre comic strip soundtracked by some really great rock music.

They cross the genres of experimental, math and indie all within their rock sound and this ability to vary is really impressive to see. The instruments are swapped regularly with a whole host of guitars being used to their absolute maximum to deliver the warped sounds of the recorded material. The whole show feels a lot more produced than you would expect for a band who only really appeared on the circuit in the mid-00s. They close much to the disappointment of fans after twelve developed and strung out tracks with a high point of 'Futura'.

Battles at The Electric Ballroom, London (28th Oct 2015)

Having waited for about 8 years to see these guys, I had very high expecations prior to the gig; Battles certainly did not disappoint. I've always been a fan of their records but there is a real rawness/energy in their live show that the recordings have always failed to capture.

Watching them create the loops from scratch in real-time is a sight to behold in itself. John Stanier is an incredible drummer -- not only does he groove with style, each hit is full of precision and power. This is a band that must be experienced live -- even if you are unsure about their recorded material!

Went to see Deerhunter in SF but Battles blew me away when they opened. One of the loudest shows I've been at in a long time but could hear so many interesting things going on in all the distortion. Deerhunter is one of my favorite bands and they were awesome, but I have to say that the Battles set is what I keep thinking back to. Do not miss an opportunity to see these guys live (even if you're kind of meh on their studio stuff)

walnerz’s profile image

Plagued by technical difficulties the set never really got going until Atlas, then some idiot in the front threw the remains of their beer on stage causing the band to cut the song short and not to return for an encore.

Having seen them before and considered them to be an amazing, right, live band this show was extremely disappointing.

Been wanting to see Battles live for about 10 years. It was awesome. The intensity of their live show is perfectly matched by the creativity of their music. John stander is an animal and had me transfixed the entire set. If you get a chance to see them play, do not sleep on it.

sean-wallace’s profile image

EASILY THE BEST LIVE BAND I HAVE EVER SEEN IN TERMS OF INNOVATION AND DELIVERY CONSIDERING HOW COMPLICATED THEIR MUSIC IS. STANIER GIVES 100% THROUGHT THE PERFORMANCE AND IS LITERALLY COVERED IN SWEAT BY THE END. SAW THEM AT THE CAMBRIDGE JUNCTION AND WAS GOOD VIBES

After almost 15 years, Battles is still playing a high-energy, innovative and totally rockin show. I'm so glad I got to see them. Everyone I was with, who were not Battles fans, loved the show and are now big fans.

One of the best concerts I've been to. They really give it their all. Unlike anything I have ever seen before. Xenia Rubinos, the opener was awesome. Highly recommend seeing them

Battles Return With 2022 Live Shows

New York City art-rock icons  Battles are set to take their incendiary live show around the globe through 2022 – find full dates and club show flyers below. The shows will be in continued support of their most recent full length, 2019’s  Juice B Crypts ,  which married synthesizer loops, cut-throat drum patterns, and cyclical riffs into a sensory overload of information that threw everything fans thought they knew about the storied group into flux once again.

In the course of promoting the album, Battles demonstrated their potency as a live unit in a session for  Highsnobiety  for which they performed  Juice B Crypts  singles “ Fort Greene Park ” and “ Titanium 2 Step ,” For the latter they were joined by New York City and no-wave legend  Sal Principato  (of  Liquid Liquid ); watch both performances paired with an interview with the band.

Britain’s best places to see: Historic British battlefields 3

by Alex McCord, 22-03-18 Post

Here are Britain’s best battlefield sites to visit for those who want to get up close to history

Battle of hastings – battle abbey battle, east sussex.

photograph of ruined abbey

Battle Abbey © Ben Jeffrey (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Probably one of the best battlefield locations in Britain, the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066 is now marked by a large Benedictine Abbey. Pope Alexander II decreed that William the Conqueror must perform penance for all the killings and so William ordered that an abbey was built.

Today the area remains a hallowed place for the history buff – here you can put your feet on ground that defined centuries for these islands. It features a visitor centre and a stellar audio tour that vividly recreates what happened on that day almost a thousand years ago, detailing everything that happened as you wind your way around the site, telling you how armies charged right where you stand.

The Battle of Towton Nr Towton, North Yorkshire

This depicts the memorial cross at the battle of Towton. It is a small stone cross with an inscription about the battle.

This place is the site of what many regard to be the most barbaric bloodbath in British battlefield history. A quiet field in between York and Leeds is the resting place of 28,000 people, almost 1% of the population back in 1461. Howling wind and blinding snow forced the Lancastrian and Yorkist forces to massacre each other in hand-to-hand combat in what is now called the Bloody Meadow.

This is a corner of England that shouldn’t be forgotten; knowing that this unassuming farmland was the last thing tens of thousands of people ever saw can send a shiver down the spine on the warmest of summer days. One of the last original standing crosses in England is also on the battle site and there are information boards documenting what occurred in this epic battle in the War of the Roses. Reconstructions and artefacts can found in the Richard III Experience museum in York, which makes the perfect accompanying visit.

The Battle of Bosworth Field – Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park Nr Market Bosworth, Leicestershire

The defining battle of the War of the Roses in 1485 now boasts an impressive visitor centre complete with artefacts, weaponry and costumes to try on. It has extensive and award-winning displays on medieval warfare but also documents the events leading up to the battle that has since been immortalised in plays, films and tales.

Although various hypotheses have been put forward for the exact location of the battle, Bosworth remains an important and atmospheric visit  – the slain Richard III was the last monarch to die in battle here and Henry VII was crowned on the battle site. To explore the site on foot, the Battlefields Trust has a great section on Bosworth with tours and maps to help the inquisitive visitor. Events also occur here throughout the year featuring soldier’s camps and recreations that do away with looking at books to let you experience the sights, sounds and smells of a battle camp.

Battle of Culloden – Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre Inverness, Scotland

A large stone memorial for the soldiers of the highlands who died at the battle of Culloden

Culloden on a quiet and cold day can fill you with the dread of what happened here. It is not the bog it once was but it’s easy to look out on the plains in the dead silence of a highland day and picture two mighty armies clashing. The Jacobite rebellion was crushed here in 1746 and the government clamped down on ‘Scottishness’ in the aftermath.

The visitor centre is packed with information and features both audio tours and a brutal reconstruction of the battle. It remains an emotional place as it is surrounded by small clan stones and an ‘English stone’ to remember those that died. Culloden is an important reminder that all of these sites are not just places of historical importance but the graves of so many.

Siege of Kenilworth – Kenilworth Castle Kenilworth, Warwickshire

Kenilworth Castle is the site of the longest and largest siege in British history which took place during the Second Baron’s war in 1266. Looking out from the battlements you can get a real senses of how the entire area around the castle was flooded to prevent Henry III’s mighty siege towers from reaching the walls. You can sit in the ruins of an old window, picturing this castle surrounded by water and the medieval machinery of war and look to the side to see graffiti from the 1800’s etched into the walls. How times change.

Whilst the conflict at Kenilworth lays forgotten in the history books, this beautiful castle has remained throughout time. Not only has it seen many wars but it was also the centre of a royal romance when the Earl of Leicester began extensive renovations and created charming gardens in an attempt to woo Elizabeth I. He was unsuccessful but the ruined majesty of the castle and its gardens still remain.

The Battle of Bannockburn Stirling, Scotland

Bannockburn Battlefield © Shadowgate (CC BY 2.0)

The battle of Bannockburn in 1314 was a significant victory in the First War for Scottish Independence for Robert the Bruce, whose outnumbered army routed the English forces of Edward II, and a great deal of effort and funding has gone into the visitor centre and surrounding area.

While many battlefield sites feature audio tours and information guides, what marks Bannockburn out is its award winning visitor centre, which boasts an immersive 3D film reconstruction and an interactive battle-map allowing you to manoeuvre your own forces and fight the battle as a commander. You can also wield period-accurate weaponry and enthusiastic costumed staff members roam the area and are very knowledgeable about all things Bannockburn. Like many medieval battles, the exact location of this pivotal clash of arms is disputed, but the self guided tours across the parkland manage to offer a good evocation of the Bruce’s improbable victory – the perfect mix of location and technology really brings history to life.

Battle of Killiecrankie – Killiecrankie Visitor Centre Killiecrankie, Scotland

Right in the centre of Scotland, in a dramatic wooded gorge where the lowland meets the highland, one of the goriest battles of the Jacobite Uprising occurred in 1689. This site is a remarkable mix of beautiful scenery and personal tales of war.

The walk around the battle area contains the solemn stone grave of Brigadier Barthold Balfour and the amazing story of Donald McBane. This soldier was being chased by Jacobite forces when he managed to leap almost six metres across River Garry to escape. You can visit the very spot and wonder how in the world he did it. Killiecrankie is also the first known use of a grenade on British soil and where the Jacobite lord, John “Bonnie Dundee” Graham met his end. His body was taken to rest three miles away at Blair Castle, the ancestral home of Clan Murray. This castle was important seat during all the Jacobite uprising and was besieged in 1745. It should definitely be part of any visit.

The sieges of Newark – Newark Castle and National Civil War Centre Newark, Nottinghamshire

The English Civil War siege of Newark has been described by some as the Stalingrad of the English Civil War, which gives you a pretty vivid idea of what befell the town oin the seventeenth century.  Besieged on three separate occasions by Parliamentarian forces, it only surrendered after a personal order from Charles I to stand down. It was the key to holding the north during the war and was deliberately destroyed to prevent any more headaches.

Today the town is the home of the brilliant National Civil War Centre which is an essential visit for any battlefield enthusiast whilst the town itself offers a myriad of Civil War locations and histories – and there are various trails, including this one from the Civic Trust,  to help you explore. The castle, which played a key role in the conflict remains a romantic ruin that rests along the river that once buffered the opposing forces and you can crawl through old dungeons or visit during one of its civil war re-enactments to experience the civil war at one of its most famous locations. Newark Castle also contains information about the infamous King John I, who he died there in 1216.

Battle of Worcester – The Commandery Worcester, Worcestershire

photograph of exterior of timber-framed building

The Commandery Worcester – Grade I listed building © Museums Worcestershire

John Adams, the second President of the United States and first Vice President once said that “All England should come in Pilgrimage once a year” to Worcester. He believed it should be holy ground for its importance to history and liberty. The old Royalist headquarters, now known as the Commandery, serves as a civil war museum that details all the locations of interest in the city.

The Civil War ended when Charles II marched on England two years after the death of his father with 14,000 men at his side, mainly from Scotland. There they met the 28,000 strong ‘New Model Army’ led by Oliver Cromwell in Worcester. The entire city is littered with monuments and features associated with the battle. Powick church still has scars from where it was struck by cannon fire that are clearly visible. You can also follow the footstep of Charles II as he watched Cromwell’s forces from Worcester Cathedral, whose tower still offers the best view of the battlefield.

If you are interested in British battlefield history The Battlefields Trust website is the essential place to begin exploring the dozens of battles that have taken place on British soil.

You miss out the Battle of Evesham which fought on the 4th of August 1265 The Second BaronsWar

' src=

The battles of Marston Moor, July 1644, probably the biggest battle ever fought on British soil, and the battle of Sedgemoor, July 1685, the last battle fought on English soil should never be forgotten.

' src=

Interesting list but one site I would definitely have included is the Battle of Maldon which took place in 991 at Northey Island in Essex. This was a late Saxon vs Viking encounter and we know exactly where and when it took place. Northey is a truly wild and atmospheric place which, at low tide when the causeway is exposed, can be enjoyed in its entirety. A good idea is to read the poem “The Battle of Maldon” first. It livens things up a lot.

Battle of Britain and Dunkirk: Their Finest Hour

I expect that the battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. . . . Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’

– Sir Winston Churchill, Former British Prime Minister and some would argue, the Finest Leader

Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours is excited to announce our exclusive new Battle of Britain and Dunkirk Tour: Their Finest Hour to commemorate Battle of Britain Day.

The focus will be the critical months of the summer of 1940 when Britain stood alone against the might of Nazi Germany and dealt Adolf Hitler his first great defeat. We begin this incredible story in France, where we study the critical early battles of 1940 that culminated in the British Expeditionary Force’s epic fighting retreat from Arras to the port of Dunkirk, and miraculous evacuation.

After crossing the English Channel to Dover we visit the famous underground bunker at Dover Castle that Admiral Bertram Ramsay used as his headquarters during the Dunkirk evacuation. We then travel extensively throughout Kent and Sussex to take in key sites associated with the Battle of Britain—including the stunning Battle of Britain Memorial atop the White Cliffs of Dover. Our discussion of the aerial battles of that fateful summer continues as we make our way to Duxford for the Imperial War Museum’s internationally renowned Battle of Britain Air Show. With our VIP passes, we will enjoy an exclusive “behind the scenes” tour of Duxford including the Battle of Britain and American Air Power museums.

Afterwards, we continue to London to study the pivotal roles the British private citizens and public servants played during wartime. Along the way we visit Bentley Priory, the headquarters of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain as well as the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge that served as the command center for 11 Fighter Group. Here at the battle’s peak, Winston Churchill was surveying the plotting board at 11 Group when he uttered those memorable words, “Never in the course of human events has so much been owed by so many to so few.”

We proceed to London’s city center where we have several days to explore the city from its occupation by Roman legions to modern times. Importantly, we visit the sites that tell the story of the Battle of Britain and the famous Blitz that followed. Among the many historic locations on our agenda will be St. Paul’s Cathedral, London Fire Brigade Museum, Imperial War Museum and a special tour of London’s forgotten underground stations. We conclude our tour with an exclusive dinner at the Royal Air Force Club in London.

  • Cambrai : Study the tank battles around Arras, France that almost stopped Erwin Rommel in his race to the Channel.
  • Bergues: Explore the BEF retreat from Bethune to the coast
  • Dunkirk : Learn about The historic “mole” at Dunkirk Harbor, the jetty that enabled some 239,000 British and French soldiers to board the awaiting vessels and evacuate to England.
  • Dunkirk:  See Dover Castle and the wartime bunkers that Admiral Bertram Ramsey used as his headquarters during Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk evacuation
  • Biggin Hill:  Exclusive visit to the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar
  • Duxford: Exclusive tour of IWM Duxford and VIP seating for Battle of Britain Air show
  • Bentley Priory:  Visit to the Fighter Command Headquarters at Bentley Priory
  • London: Private Tour of London’s forgotten Tube stations, walking tour of Blitz London and an exclusive final dinner at RAF Club

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 paris.

Guests fly independently on an overnight flight to Paris, scheduled to arrive by 10 a.m. on Day 2. If you cannot arrive by 10 a.m., we can help with arrangement for an extra night in Paris at the hotel where staff will be sleeping.

DAY 2 Cambrai

Once you arrive in Paris (by 10 a.m.), meet in the Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel & Conference Centre within the CDG airport. Once all guests have arrived, the group will drive to Cambrai, discussing early May tank battles around Arras and Cambrai.

Heinz Guderian and Erwin Rommel’s panzers seemed unstoppable as they tore across France in the third week of May 1940. On May 21, 1940, the British and French launched a large-scale tank attack from Arras against the advancing German armored forces. They were determined to stop the German drive on the Channel Coast and prevent the encirclement of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). After initial Allied success, the Germans were able to stymie their advance. The daring Allied counterstroke, however, had gained retreating infantry valuable time to begin to form a perimeter along the Channel. We visit many of the sites associated with this first large-scale tank battle of the war in western Europe.

DAY 3 Bergues, Cassel

We explore the BEF retreat from Bethune to the coast. Our stops include the BEF’s epic 60-mile fighting retreat and the stand made by six very badly depleted British battalions as they attempted to stop four German divisions. Our battlefield visits will include the important fortified town of Bergues, heavily bombarded by the Luftwaffe before its 450 defenders succumbed to assaults by overwhelming numbers of German troops. We will also study the Gloucester Regiment’s rear-guard action at Cassel, the village of Esquelbecq, where members of the 1 st SS murdered some 80-plus British prisoners in a terrible foretaste of the SS’s later crimes throughout the war and the Canal de Bergues where Ervine Andrews earned the Victoria Cross.

DAY 4 Dunkirk

Today we tour the sites in and around the 25-mile long Dunkirk Perimeter including the battle-scarred walls of Saint Eloi Church, Dunkirk Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, the Museum Dunkirk 1940, the Bray dunes and the famous Mole, the jetty from which the bulk of British and French soldiers evacuated during Operation Dynamo. This afternoon, we take the ferry across the English Channel; our first view of England will be the famous White Cliffs of Dover.

DAY 5 Dover

After breakfast we travel a short distance to Dover Castle, which has stood sentinel over Britain’s coast for centuries. Our visit here will include a tour of the underground bunker complex that became Admiral Bertram Ramsay’s headquarters during Operation Dynamo. It was from here that Ramsay, who would later command Allied landing forces in Normandy, would organize the evacuation of more than 300,000 French and British troops that kept Great Britain in the fight. From the castle it is a short drive to the splendid Battle of Britain Memorial, perched atop the White Cliffs. While there we will take part in the new “Scramble Experience.” This will give us a sense of what it was like to climb into a waiting aircraft such as a Spitfire or Hurricane at the height of the Battle of Britain. We complete the day with a visit to the Kent Battle of Britain Museum and its vast collection of artifacts from over 700 crashed aircraft.

DAY 6 Biggin Hill, Duxford

We start the day with an exclusive visit to the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar. Located on the site of one of the Battle of Britain’s most active airfields, the Heritage Center is a restoration facility dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the famous Spitfire fighter aircraft. We will witness restoration work in progress on several of the historic fighter planes as well as the equally important Hawker Hurricane and an incredibly rare Messerschmitt ME 109 German fighter.

Following our tour of Biggin Hill we will travel to IWM Duxford where the group will have an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the many museums on site as well as the remaining facilities in the most well-preserved World War II airfield in Europe. Built in 1918 by German POWs, Duxford is one of the most historic Battle of Britain airfields. In 1938 it saw 19 Squadron receive the first operational Spitfire Aircraft and it was from this airstrip that the 19, 242 and 310 (Czech) Squadrons operated as 12 Group under the command of the legendary Douglas Bader. These three groups were eventually joined by 302 (Polish) and 611 Squadrons.

DAY 7 Battle of Britain Air Show, Cambridge

The entire day is devoted to enjoying the Battle of Britain air show. The group VIP tickets will allow for reserved marquee, priority seating to enjoy the air show and flight line access. After enjoying the air show we will travel to Cambridge. Before checking in to our hotel we will have an opportunity to visit the Cambridge American Battle Monuments Commission Cemetery and Memorial where we will have an opportunity to pay our respects to the 3,811 Americans buried there.

DAY 8 Bentley Priory, Uxbridge

Having spent our time studying the stories of individual airmen, we shift our focus to the higher levels of command during the Battle of Britain. From Cambridge we will drive to the Bentley Priory Museum. It was from Bentley Priory, the headquarters of Fighter Command, that Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding commanded and, eventually became the victor. From the Priory Museum we will travel to Uxbridge, which is home to the Battle of Britain Bunker.

The fighters of 11 Group embarked from the Uxbridge Bunker for their operational missions during the most desperate days of the Battle of Britain. Our exclusive tour will take us deep underground to the heart of this previously top-secret facility to see the plotting board, restored to its exact appearance on September 15, 1940, Battle of Britain Day. Churchill was a frequent visitor to the bunker during the battle and it was after a visit on August 16, 1940, that he first uttered his famous phrase, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed, by so many, to so few.”

DAY 9 Hendon, London

From our hotel in London we will begin our exploration of the capital city with a visit to the RAF Museum at the former Hendon airdrome. This state-of-the-art museum traces the history of the RAF from its founding in April 1918 as well as the history of aerial warfare. It has more than 100 rare and beautifully restored aircraft on display as well as other unique artifacts. From Hendon we return to central London for the key Battle of Britain sites and the Blitz bombing that followed. Among our stops will be the Battle of Britain Monument, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the London Docklands, the target of much German bombing. To aid in our study of London during the Blitz the group will also have a private access tour of now abandoned Underground stations that served as shelters during the bombardments.

DAY 10 London

Our final day in London resumes with the London Blitz and includes a Blue Badge guided walking tour of Churchill’s London.  This will take in many of the sites associated with the wartime British prime minister including the Cabinet War Rooms, Parliament and Churchill’s favorite cigar and wine shop. Appropriately, we will conclude our study of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain with a private dinner at the exclusive RAF Club in London.

DAY 11 Flight Home

One morning transfer to be provided to London’s Heathrow (LHR) airport.

All you need to know about Battlefield Tours

How many wars has europe had.

Europe has been involved in hundreds of wars over the years, including more than 100 wars in the 20th and 21st centuries alone. Two of the most horrific wars include WWI in which an estimated 37 million people perished, and WWII where the number of estimated deaths ranges from 60 to 80 million people, including military and civilian casualties.

What was the last religious war in Europe?

The Bosnian War lasted from 1992 until 1995 and was one of the last ethnically-rooted wars in Europe. It began when fighting broke out between the multiethnic population of the former republic of Yugoslavia. Around 100,000 soldiers and civilians died in the war, and it led to the genocide of at least 25,000 Bosnian Muslims, known as Bosniaks.

What were the major battles in Europe during WW2?

The Second World War was one of the deadliest events in human history, with hundreds of battles that claimed millions of lives. Some of the most major battles in Europe during WWII were the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, the Battle of Berlin, the Battle of Britain, Operation Barbarossa, and the Battle of Stalingrad in Russia.

Which European country has had the most battles?

Known as the ‘Battlefield of Europe’, Belgium has had more battles than any other country in Europe. Almost every big power of Europe has fought on its land since the Roman Empire, with historic battles such as the Battle of Waterloo, and the battles of WWI and WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battles of Ypres.

Wars of the Roses

Wars of the Roses Image

The Real Life Game of Thrones!

Between 1455 and 1487, over 30 years and 8 major bloody battles, the kingdom and families were at war. The Crown changed hands four times . This is no ordinary battlefield tour of The Cousin’s War, more famously known as the Wars of the Roses. Perhaps the most brutal and bloody 30 year period in English History, we delve into the period to find the women behind the Kings. Were they the real heroes, the power brokers and the villains? This is a unique tour which gives visitors insights into the conflict between families, between cousins and reveals the true role of its women. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

Your Holiday Essentials

Tour introduction.

Our 14-day tour is set amidst picturesque American countryside: the scenic Shenandoah Valley, the mighty James River and a wealth of National Parks. We explore historic American towns and cities such as Fredericksburg, Richmond, Lexington, Harper’s Ferry and of course, Gettysburg and visit the major eastern civil war engagements en-route. We walk over superbly preserved battlefields, often situated within their own national parkland, enjoy inspiring presentations not only from your expert historian, Fred Hawthorne, but from selected park rangers and visit a wealth of museums, historic buildings and interpretation centres.

This is a Civil War tour like no other: we are based out of full-service hotels (including hot breakfast) where we can enjoy drinks in the bar. Every evening we experience a wealth of restaurants, including several historic taverns, in which we enjoy a wide and varied cuisine.

During the American Civil War more Americans lost their lives than during the whole of WW1 and WW2 combined. An estimated 750,000 – some 2% of the population – died of battle wounds or disease. For four years, battles raged across the continent, but rarely was the fighting fiercer than in the Eastern Theater where six of the ten bloodiest battles of the war were fought. Encouraged by early victories, the Confederate forces held off subsequent Federal advances around Richmond until they felt confident enough to take the war into the North, where their advances were checked at Antietam in 1862 and Gettysburg in 1863. After achieving their ‘high water mark’, Southern forces were engaged in a fight against the inevitable which was to finally end at a small courthouse in Appomattox in April 1865.

We will visit the Confederate “White House” where docents will describe President Jefferson Davis and his large family’s stay in the city. We will drive down past the Virginia State Capitol which served as the Confederate Congress’s home for the duration of the war. We end the day at the magnificent and sparkling new American Civil War Museum (formerly the Museum of the Confederacy) and the National Park Visitor Centre at Historic Tredegar Iron Foundry. Day 12 - Gettysburg

The greatest battle of the American Civil War and for many, the single most important event of that war. We devote our last full day exploring this site. We will tour many of the great sites associated with the battle: Oak Hill, Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, and the famous Bloody Angle. A highlight of all our classic Eastern Civil War tours is the opportunity to walk the route of the climactic attack: Pickett’s Charge. In the afternoon we will visit the brilliantly restored Cyclorama of Gettysburg set within one of the finest military museums in the world. Our farewell dinner will be at a historic Gettysburg Tavern.

Day 13 - Final Thoughts

Céline Dion says she may never tour again amid battle with stiff person syndrome. Here’s what to know

Céline Dion presents the album of the year award on stage during the 66th Annual Grammy Awards at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 4, 2024.

Céline Dion is learning how to live with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022 that forced her to put performing on the back burner.

The condition affects her vocal cords as well as her ability to walk.

In an interview with Vogue France for its May 2024 issue, Dion is asked her thoughts on whether she will perform again: “I don’t know… My body will tell me. On the other hand, I just don’t want to wait,” she says.

For four years, Dion says she’s been debating whether or not she will be ready again. As things stand, she says she cannot give a definitive answer, as each day is different from the next.

“It’s hard, I’m working very hard and tomorrow will be even harder. Tomorrow is another day. But there’s one thing that will never stop, and that’s the will. It’s the passion. It’s the dream. It’s the determination,” Dion tells Vogue .

The “My Heart Will Go On” singer shared her diagnosis in a tearful Instagram video in 2022. At that time, she said, “I have to admit, it’s been a struggle. All I know is singing. It’s what I’ve done all my life, and it’s what I love to do the most.”

What is stiff person syndrome?

Stiff person syndrome affects the brain and spinal cord and progressively worsens, with some people having mild symptoms and others experiencing more debilitating ones. People may experience muscle stiffness and spasms as common symptoms of the neurological condition, according to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, and experts think it may be caused by an autoimmune response.

As symptoms progress, people may experience hunching over, owing to the spine being affected. It affects an estimated fewer than 5,000 people in the U.S., and the onset age is usually in adulthood. “People with SPS often have heightened sensitivity to noise, sudden movements, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms,” notes the National Institutes of Health’s Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center .

battles tour uk

“Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to,” Dion said in 2022.

There is no cure for stiff person syndrome, although sedatives, steroids, and muscle relaxants can help alleviate symptoms, according to Yale Medicine . Stretching and massage therapy can also help.

Dion’s new normal includes “athletic, physical, and vocal therapy” five days a week, she tells Vogue .

“I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice,” Dion says.

Early on in her diagnosis, Dion said she questioned what she did to deserve the condition. Now she says life doesn’t give you answers to these difficult questions: “You just have to live it.”

“The way I see it, I have two choices. Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror and sing to myself,” Dion says.

“I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be.”

The support she receives from her family, fans, and team are what helps Dion most in difficult times, she says in the interview. She also recognizes she is lucky to have good doctors and treatment options.

“I have those means, and this is a gift. What’s more, I have this strength within me. I know nothing is going to stop me,” Dion says.

UK passes bill to send asylum seekers to Rwanda

Lawyers prepare for legal battles on behalf of individual asylum seekers challenging removal to east Africa

  • How the UK government’s Rwanda deportation plan was fought in court

Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda deportation bill will become law after peers eventually backed down on amending it, opening the way for legal battles over the potential removal of dozens of people seeking asylum.

After a marathon battle of “ping pong” over the key legislation between the Commons and the Lords, the bill finally passed when opposition and crossbench peers gave way on Monday night.

The bill is expected to be granted royal assent on Tuesday. Home Office sources said they have already identified a group of asylum seekers with weak legal claims to remain in the UK who will be part of the first tranche to be sent to east Africa in July.

Sunak has put the bill, which would deport asylum seekers who arrive in the UK by irregular means to Kigali, at the centre of his attempts to stop small boats crossing the Channel.

The home secretary, James Cleverly, said it was a “landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats”.

In a video posted to social media, he said: “The safety of Rwanda bill has passed in parliament and it will become law within days.

“The act will prevent people from abusing the law by using false human rights claims to block removals. And it makes clear that the UK parliament is sovereign, giving government the power to reject interim blocking measures imposed by European courts.

“I promised to do what was necessary to clear the path for the first flight. That’s what we have done. Now we’re working day in and day out to get flights off the ground.”

Denisa Delić, director of advocacy at International Rescue Committee UK, said on Monday: “Irrespective of today’s passage of the safety of Rwanda bill, sending refugees to Rwanda is an ineffective, unnecessarily cruel and costly approach.

“Rather than outsourcing its responsibilities under international law, we urge the government to abandon this misguided plan and instead focus on delivering a more humane and orderly immigration system at home.

“This includes scaling up safe routes, such as resettlement and family reunion, and upholding the right to seek asylum.”

The Home Office has whittled the list down to 350 migrants who are deemed to pose the least risk of submitting successful legal challenges blocking their deportation.

Lawyers have told the Guardian that they will prepare legal challenges on behalf of individual asylum seekers. They can challenge their removal on a case-by-case basis, which could lead to their being taken off a flight list.

The bill allows challenges if a detainee faces a “real, imminent and foreseeable risk of serious irreversible harm if removed to Rwanda”.

They must lodge an appeal within eight days of receiving a deportation letter. The Home Office would then be given several days to respond. If their appeal is rejected, the person claiming asylum will then be given seven days to lodge a final appeal to an upper tribunal court, which will decide their claim within a further 23 days.

The deal will cost £1.8m for each of the first 300 deportees, the National Audit Office has confirmed.

Matthew Rycroft, the most senior civil servant in the Home Office who has overseen the scheme for two years, previously told MPs he did not have evidence to show that it had a deterrent effect that would make it value for money.

Home Office staff have privately warned that there is a risk of thousands of asylum seekers disappearing once removals begin, keen to avoid receiving notification that they are being sent to Kigali.

Earlier, MPs stripped out amendments to the bill inserted by the Lords. Crossbench and Labour peers said they would reinsert similar changes in a battle of wills.

The government will not send those who are eligible under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (Arap) to Rwanda, a Home Office minister told peers during one of the many debates held on Monday evening.

Lord Sharpe said: “Once this review of Arap decisions for those with credible links to Afghan specialist units has concluded, the government will not remove to Rwanda those who received a positive eligibility decision as a result of this review where they are already in the UK as of today.”

Lord Browne, a Labour former defence secretary who had been leading calls for such an assurance, said: “The minister does not believe this to be a concession, it is to him a restatement of what he has been telling us for some time, but in a different form.”

Meanwhile, leading lawyer and independent crossbencher Lord Anderson of Ipswich said of the Rwanda scheme: “Its benefits remain to be seen. Its costs will be measured, not only in money, but in principles debased: disregard for our international commitments, avoiding statutory protections for the vulnerable, and the removal of judicial scrutiny over the core issue of the safety of Rwanda.”

The prime minister also disclosed that the first flights removing asylum seekers to Rwanda were planned to depart in 10 to 12 weeks, missing his original spring target .

At a specially convened press conference on Monday morning, he said the government would “not let a foreign court” block flights to Rwanda and stressed that he would finally end the “legal merry-go-round” associated with deportation flights.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “No more prevarication, no more delay. Parliament will sit there tonight and vote no matter how late it goes. No ifs, no buts. These flights are going to Rwanda.”

Labour said Sunak was wrong to blame the party’s peers for delaying the Rwanda bill.

Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, said: “[The] Tories are the largest party in both Houses of Parliament and they could have scheduled the final stages of the bill a month ago but they voluntarily delayed it because they always want someone else to blame.”

The UK government finally passes bill to send migrants to Rwanda, but the battle is not over

LONDON — The British Parliament has finally passed legislation to send some migrants to Rwanda , clearing the runway for flights this summer under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ’s controversial plan aimed at deterring risky English Channel crossings by people desperate to reach the U.K.

A bill designed to unblock a plan beset by court challenges and legislative battles was approved early Tuesday, delivering what Sunak hopes will be a much-needed political victory and fulfill his pledge to “stop the boats.”

Human rights activists and migrants’ groups have vowed to continue the fight against the policy, which they say is unethical and inhumane.

Here’s a look at the plan and what it took to reach this stage.

WHAT IS THE RWANDA PLAN?

The Rwanda plan is the British government’s response to the growing number of migrants from around the world — reaching a high of 46,000 in 2022 — who cross the English Channel from France to Britain in small boats.

Most people who arrive that way apply for asylum, and in the past many have been granted it. The Conservative government says these migrants should not be treated as genuine refugees because they did not claim asylum in another safe country, such as France, that they reached first.

In an attempt to deter people from making the risky journeys, the U.K. struck a deal with Rwanda in April 2022 to send migrants who arrive in the U.K. as stowaways or in boats to the East African country, where their asylum claims would be processed and, if successful, they would stay.

Human rights groups and other critics of the plan say it is unworkable and unethical to send migrants to a country 4,000 miles (6,400 miles) away that they don’t want to live in. No one has yet been sent to Rwanda, but Sunak has said the first flights will leave in July.

ID IT TAKE SO LONG TO REACH THIS POINT?

The Rwanda plan was immediately met with legal challenges. The first removal flight was grounded at the last moment in June 2022 after a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights,

The case ultimately reached Britain’s Supreme Court, which dealt the government a defeat in November, ruling that the policy is unlawful because Rwanda is not a safe third country where migrants can be sent. Five justices unanimously said that “the removal of the claimants to Rwanda would expose them to a real risk of ill-treatment” because they could be sent back to the home countries they had fled.

The judges said there was evidence Rwanda had a culture that misunderstood its obligations under the Refugee Convention, was dismissive toward asylum-seekers from the Middle East and Afghanistan, and had little experience of the asylum procedures needed to handle the cases of migrants from around the world.

HOW DID THE U.K. GOVERNMENT RESPOND?

Britain and Rwanda signed a treaty in December pledging to strengthen protections for migrants, partly by barring Rwanda from sending any migrants deported from the U.K back to their home countries. Sunak’s government argued the treaty allowed it to pass a law declaring Rwanda a safe destination.

The Safety of Rwanda Bill, which was passed Tuesday, pronounces the country safe , making it harder for migrants to challenge deportation and allows the British government to ignore injunctions from the European Court of Human Rights that seek to block removals.

If that fails to stop legal challenges, Sunak has said he would consider ignoring or leaving international human rights treaties including the European Convention on Human Rights. That move is backed by some members of Sunak’s governing Conservative Party, but would draw strong domestic opposition and international criticism. The only European countries that are not party to the rights convention are Belarus and Russia.

The Rwandan government insists it is “committed to its international obligations” and has been recognized by the U.N. and other international institutions “for our exemplary treatment of refugees.” Rwanda’s government says the country is ready to receive migrants from Britain, and has plans to build more than 1,000 houses, including recreational facilities, for the deportees.

HAVE OTHER COUNTRIES TRIED SIMILAR POLICIES?

Britain is not alone in trying to control irregular migration. Much of Europe and the U.S. is struggling with how best to cope with migrants seeking refuge from war, violence, oppression and a warming planet that has brought devastating drought and floods.

A few countries have tried offshore processing of asylum seekers — notably Australia, which first sent migrants to the Pacific island nation of Nauru in 2001 and has operated an asylum-processing center there since 2012.

From 2013 to 2018, Israel had a deal with Rwanda to deport African migrants, until Israel’s supreme court declared it unlawful.

Denmark has moved away from a deal with Rwanda and wants to find a solution with fellow European Union countries.

“A British or Danish solution will solve a problem for the individual country,” Danish Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek told Danish broadcaster DR Tuesday. “But we believe a unified European solution will solve more problems, because you will also stop the people smugglers who today make billions from transporting people across the Mediterranean.”

Last year, Italy reached a deal with Albania for the Balkan country to temporarily house and process some of the thousands of migrants who reach Italian shores. There is a crucial difference from the U.K. plan: it’s not a one-way trip. Successful asylum-seekers would get to start new lives in Italy, not Albania.

Taylor Swift fans in the UK have been scammed out of $1.2 million, bank says

  • UK Taylor Swift fans have lost over $1.2 million to Eras Tour ticket scams, Lloyds Bank says.
  • The bank issued an urgent warning after it said 600 of its customers fell victim to the scam.
  • Most of the ticket scams targeted 25- 34-year-olds through fake ads on Facebook.

Insider Today

It looks like it's heating up to be a Cruel Summer — at least for Swifties in the United Kingdom seeking Eras Tour tickets.

Fans of Taylor Swift have already been scammed out of over $1.2 million trying to purchase concert tickets, mostly through Facebook, according to Lloyds Bank .

This prompted the bank, which is among the United Kingdom's largest, to issue an "urgent warning." The warning said that at least 600 of its customers had been victimized by a ticket scam, losing anywhere from £332 to over £1,000.

Outside of its own banking system, Lloyds estimated some 3,000 more Brits may have fallen prey to the scams, losing as much as £1 million, or over $1.2 million, in total nationwide.

Most of the scams appeared to target 25- to 34-year-olds using fake ads on Facebook, the bank said.

"For her legion of dedicated Swifties, the excitement is building ahead of Taylor's Eras Tour finally touching down in the UK this summer. However cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting her most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts," fraud prevention director Liz Ziegler said.

The popularity of Swift's Eras Tour has caused all manner of problems for its ticket-seeking fans.

Many Swift fans in the United States were forced to purchase resale tickets after Ticketmaster botched the 2022 release of tickets, prompting a congressional inquiry the following year. Swifties stateside told Business Insider they had to do serious sleuthing to confirm they weren't being scammed when they paid for resale tickets.

In July 2023, the San Francisco Better Business Bureau warned Swift fans that scammers were running ticket scams as her "Eras Tour" date approached in the city, according to ABC .

Alma Galvan, BBB regional communications manager, told the outlet that scammers will sometimes pretend to be friends on social media and sell fans fake tickets for a large price.

The BBB recommends only purchasing tickets from reputable vendors and using a credit card before a debit card, cash transfer app, or cash, the report said.

One Swift fan who spent more than $1,500 on tickets on Facebook Marketplace told BI that she insisted on using Paypal Goods and Services for the transaction because it helps users get a refund if their concert tickets never arrive.
