Belgaum got its name from Venugrama , meaning "bamboo village". It is the district HQ. The most ancient place in the district is Halsi; and this, once the capital of a dynasty of nine Kadamba kings. In 1776 the country was overrun by Hyder Ali of Mysore, but was retaken by the Peshwa with British assistance. In 1818 it was handed over to the British East India Company, and made district of Sangli state.

Belgaum has been the focal point of a border dispute between the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra . Both states claim Belgaum on linguistic grounds. Traditionally, most people spoke Kannada but the majority in the big cities spoke Marathi , which has resulted in regional tensions.

As of 2022, Belgaum and environs are claimed by Maharashtra and they are under the administration of the Government of Karnataka. We treat Belgaum as a part of Karnataka here, which does not represent a political endorsement of the claims made by either side of the dispute.

Belgaum is on a main Indian Railways line, well connected by rail to major destinations such as Bangalore (via Hubli ), Mumbai, Pune / Delhi (via Miraj) and Goa.

Belgaum has excellent city bus connectivity and also for the rural area around Belgaum, the charges are nominal around ₹10 from one end to the other part of the city . Private and Gov't Buses also provide transport for commuting between Hubli, Dharwad, Goa, and other nearby places .

This is cheap way of transport between attractions. Though not metered always it would be wise to ask the approximate amount from a local.

Normally, taxis are not needed unless you plan to go way out of the city. If you want to move around in city, Autos and buses are good enough.

There are many rental companies offering cars with drivers or self-drive, including Hertz on College Road.

The old stone fort, built in 12th century AD by the local Ratta rulers, is an important spot, though hardly anything of the original structure remains. One can view the splendid Kamal Basti (Jain temple), within the fort's premises. The Fort premises also hosts the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Ashram. This fort was renovated and built on by successive rulers who ruled Belgaum from time to time. Belgaum's Watchtower and Sunset Point should not be missed if one wants to savor the scenic beauty surrounding this small town.

Belgaum is famous for its temples and the religious-minded traveler could find a number of temples here, the main ones being Kamal Basti (in Belgaum Fort) Kapileshwar temple, Shani temple and the Maruti Temple.

The Masjid-Sata mosque, which dates back to the 16th century AD, the Mahadeva temple with its beautiful gardens, the St. Mary's Church of England, St. Xavier's Church, Catholic Cathedral and St. Anthony's Church, all lie within the lush green environs of the Cantonment.

The cuisine has a mixed flavour of central (Marathi)and north Indian flavours. This would be the place to try Chats and other Maharashtrian delicacies in Karnataka. Solkadi, a drink made from Kokam fruits, is also a Goan import goes well with fish. Belgaum's famous sweet, Kunda, is available in all major sweet shops.

Gokak Falls : Gokak Falls is a waterfall known for its beauty. It is at a distance of 60 km from Belgaum and 10 km from Gokak town. Located right on the main road is a celebrated tourist centre in the district. This falls has a height of about 52 m (171 ft). The river Ghataprapha after winding a course of a long route takes a leap of 52 m, over a rocky bed 52 m down. The falls is famous for its spread and shape. The dull roar of the falls can be heard much before you reach it. The falls are horse-shoe shaped at the crest, with a flood width of 177 m. June to September is the best season to visit. Electricity was generated here for the first time in the country in 1887. This generating station can be reached on the rope way.

Godachinmalki Falls :16 km from Gokak, it is at a fine spot the first jump from a height of about 25 metres and flows into a rocky valley and after a short distance from here it takes a second jump at a height of about 18 meters.

Jamboti :Jamboti is 20 km south-west of Belgaum. Jamboti is a popular tourist spot with its evergreen hilltop forests. Mandovi River, the longest river in Goa has its origin in the Jamboti hills.

Kittur : Kittur is 44 km from Belgaum. Kittur is a place of historical significance. Rani Channamma of Kittur is known for her resistance to British rule. A ruined fort, formerly the residence of the chief of Kittur can be found here.

Navilutirtha (Saundatti) : 80 km from Belgaum, a low valley in between the 2 hills, in an enchanting place is Navilutirtha. It used to be full of peacocks, frequently flocking round the pond, and thus the place was named Navilutirtha. The Malaprabha Dam near Renukasagar is here. It is also a good picnic spot.

Rakaskop water reservoir : 16 km from Belgaum, literally means a hamlet of a Rakkasa (Giant), who is stated to have lived on a hillock near the village. A cavern in laterite on the hillrock resembling a huge seated human figure is shown by the people to remind his past existence. Here is a Dam across the river Markandeya, supplying drinking water to Belgaum.

Vajrapoha Falls : Vajrada Avalakki or Vajra Seethavaade 60 km from Belgaum. It is one of the few less known & most spectacular Falls of the Western Ghats, which is still pristine and not choked. trek Follows along the swift flowing river Mahadayi in deep forests.the River Mahadayi is joined by two other streams Marcidha nala and Pannera nala in creating this magnificent waterfalls, which later known by the name "Mandovi" in Goa. The river, cascading down at a great speed to a gorge below, taking a giant leap of over 150 feet is a sight to behold. The roar of the falls reaches deafening proportions. Walking sometimes in the waist deep water, traversing the slippery slopes and rocks with all the skills is not an easy task. In the evening the soft rays of sun falling on the veil gives a glittering touch thus the name vajra! one needs to be bit more adventurous to get to the bottom of the falls. Traversing the slippery slopes and wading through thorny bushes is really an unusual experience. Views of the waterfall makes one awestruck and complacent. If you're lucky you'll spot a pied hornbill, huli salinga - Brother of venomous tarantula spider. A must see destination for the avid nature lover.

Anshi National Park or Kali Tiger Reserve 90 km from Belagavi. Wild animals can be seen. Also many dams within the tiger reserve.

Having spent most of my summer vacations, I have fond memories of exploring many places to visit in Belgaum. This post has a list of all the Belgaum Tourist places one must tick off.

I used to travel to Belgaum from Vadodara on Indian Railways to meet my maternal family.

Belgaum, also called Belgao by the locals or officially as Belagavi, has always been special to me.

Nestled on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka, both states claim Belgaum to be their own. Being close to both of these states as well as Goa , Belgaum culture is a mix of Maharashtrian , Kannadiga and Konkani . Marathi and Kannada languages are both fluently spoken by the locals.

Belgaum weather is something that entices a traveller. Happily settled at the foothills of the Sahyadri range in the Western Ghats, the places to visit in Belgaum and around Belgaum are dense forests, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, ghats that are sure to make anyone fall in love.

Belgaum is famous for its cultural vibrancy. Whether it is Diwali, Rang Panchami or Ambedkar Jayanti, each festival is celebrated with fervour by the locals. But the most special festival that gets the Belgaumites excited is Ganeshutsav .

Ganesh Chaturti in Belgaum sees the grandest celebrations after Mumbai and Pune wherein the entire city colours itself in the hues of Gulal , chants of ‘ Ganpati Bappa Morya’ and drowns in the sweet scent of Modak . Every household in Belgaum enthusiastically welcomes the elephant-headed god with rangolis in front of their house, decorations in the house, the rhythmic sounds of Nashik dhol and a heart full of love.

If anyone ever wants to visit Belgaum they must do it during Ganeshutsav!

Places to visit in Belgaum

There are many Belgaum visiting places – from the historical fort in the heart of the city to the mystical waterfalls near Belgaum, there are many things to do in Belgaum and around. Whether you are a student studying at KLE University or VTU, or a tourist there is something here for everyone.

Belgaum Fort

Once a grand place in itself, not much remains of the Belgaum Fort now.

Built in the 12th century, Belgaum Fort is believed to be one of the oldest forts of Karnataka. Ruled by many Hindu & Muslim Kingdoms it was once ruled by Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj and later on by the Peshwas. In its best days, the fort had high walls and a very wide moat, filled with water, for extra security from enemies.

While the fort area spans a few acres, there is only a fort wall that remains in the center of the city. It was a shame to go here and not see anything that resembles a fort. But even though there is no fort structure, the Belgaum fort or Belagavi fort is still a place where multi cultures reside.

The fort premises houses a mosque, a Hindu temple, a Jain temple, and an Ashram inside its premises.

Belgaum Fort is also home to some of the tallest, rarest, and most magnificent trees in Belgaum. Many trees have a girth of more than 7 to 8 feet and reach up to 75 to 100 feet in height. If you like birdwatching then there are many birds of western ghats that reside here. Crane those necks with binoculars to check out the amazing wings of colours.

Kamal Basti

There are two temples also known as Jinalayas in the later Chalukya style – Kamal Basti and Chikki Basti. While Chikki Basti is in ruins, Kamal Basti is one of the best places to visit in Belgaum. The two are said to have been part of a complex of 108 bastis of which only 2 survive today. Not much is known of the remaining bastis and temples inside the fort complex.

Kamla Basti is spread over manicured lawns, and coconut trees, and gives the feeling of being inside a forest.

The temple locally called Kamal Basadi is a Jain temple (Ratta Jinalaya) dedicated to Shri Neminath Tirthankar that was built in 1204 AD by Bichiraja, a minister of Kartavirya IV of the Ratta Dynasty. The temple name literally means Lotus Sculpture. The interior architecture reminded me of another beautiful temple – Ranakpur Jain temple .

The external walls are plain with horizontal bands and exhibit various patterns of geometry. However, the interior of the temple has intricately carved pillars and arches.

Kamal Basti | Places to visit in Belgaum

The inner temple porch has three entrances and each is joined with stone benches on its periphery.

The ceiling of the porch is in Kadambanagara style (stepped pyramidal type) and has a dome with 72 lotuses, hence the name Kamal Basti. On the ceiling can also be seen the projected idols of Ashtadikpalakas also known as Gods of Eight directions as well as images of Jain Tirthankara in between them.

The pillars leading to the inner sanctum or garbhagriha have intricate carvings on them. The deity inside is carved in black stone and that of Neminath Tirthankara in black stone, the 22nd Tirthankara .

The frame behind the idol is extremely artistic with floral designs and Makara Torana meaning guardians of gateways and thresholds, protecting throne rooms as well as entryways to temples. Idols of a few Tirthankara can be seen inside and in the wall niches.

This temple is currently being taken care of by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and is one of the best places to visit in Belgaum.

Entry fees to Kamal Basti is free.

Ramkrishna Mission Ashram Belgaum

Just a couple of meters away from Kamal Basti is the Ramkrishna Mission Ashram, another peaceful place in the Belgaum Fort premises. The Ashram holds importance as the visionary Shri Swami Vivekananda stayed here for nine days when he visited Belgaum in 1892. A cottage which houses the information about his visit and his idol is present.

Beside the cottage is a big meditation hall on the first floor. It has positive vibes and an extremely calm atmosphere. And anyone can go and sit here, without any questions asked.

Other places on the premises include a dining hall and a residence for the Monks. There is a small library that sells publications written by Swamiji and his ideologies. Ramakrishna Mission Ashram Belgaum also organizes numerous welfare activities, lectures, yoga, bhajan chanting, and meditation classes for visitors.

Watch India’s Tallest Flag Installation at Kote Kere

Kote Kere is also known as Fort Lake is the favorite picnic spot in Belgaum . This is a well-maintained lake in the city, situated exactly in front of Belgaum Fort. Kote kere has lush greenery surrounding it with walkways along its boundary for joggers.

Other options around the lake include pedal boats and ferry boats. There are floating restaurants on the lake water as well as many food stalls around the lake periphery. There is a small amusement park for the kids as well as a fountain show that is held every Saturday and Sunday from 6 pm to 8 pm.

However, the latest attraction in Belgaum includes the installation of India’s tallest flag . After Pune and Attari, Belgaum hosts the highest flag. Overlooking the lake waters, the tricolor paints a pretty picture against the sunset sky filling the visitor with pride and honor.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue Park

Near the Military Mahadev temple premises, near the parking area is an area that has miniature forts that were ruled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the erstwhile Maratha Empire ruler. The forts are made in a similar shape to the original and have historical information. The park has miniatures of 11 important forts including Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg, Vishal Gad, Panahala, Pratap Gad, Raigarh, Torna, Raj Gad, Sinha Gad, Shivneri, and Purandar.

Military Mahadeva Temple

I remember spending a lot of time in the Military Mahadev Temple gardens when I visited as a kid. A fountain near the entrance and the swings and slides in the temple premises is what I loved the most. The trip was complete after having a fill of Alipak and Sugarcane juice from the vendors outside the garden.

Military Mahadeva Temple is one of the most popular tourist places to visit in Belgaum . It is one of the oldest temples in the region and gets its name as it is managed by the Indian Army of Southern Command. The presiding deity is an image of Lord Shiva and a Shivlinga. Two Nandi idols can also be seen in front of the Shivling.

As one enters the temple there is an artificial water fountain with an idol of Lord Krishna around a well-kept and maintained garden. Straight ahead is the Shiva temple. This is one of the most peaceful places in Belgaum

The premises also has a children’s park and a mini zoo.

There are many falls near Belgaum that are at a distance of 30-60 km from Belgaum and are accessible after a short hike through the surrounding forest area. This combines the enjoyment of nature with adventurous activity, especially in the rains making Belgaum a perfect monsoon destination. Some falls are

Gokak waterfalls, Vajrapoha waterfalls, Sundi waterfalls, Shimbola waterfalls, Godchinamalaki waterfalls, Kalasa waterfalls, Chikhale waterfalls, and Tilari waterfalls.

Hill Station near Belgaum

With the Sahyadri range around, it is quite possible to romance the mountains along with the waterfalls.

There are ample hill stations near Belgaum for ultimate relaxation, adventure, or nature experience, whichever you want.

Nersa hill station is a lesser-known hill station, in the forest range of Londa in the Western Ghats in the Belgaum district.

Yana hill station is famous for its thick forest, streams, Durga Devi temple, Swayambhu shiva lingam, and Vibhuti waterfalls.

Jamboti hills are popular for camping and wildlife. Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary near Jamboti offers wildlife sightings.

Another gem near Belgaum in the monsoon is the Amboli ghat . Amboli is a haven for waterfalls locally called Dhabdhaba . To name a few – Shirgaonkar waterfalls, Mahadev waterfalls, Nagatta waterfalls, Hiranyakeshi waterfalls are some of the numerous waterfalls that can be found here.

Mahakuta Temples are known as the Dakshin Kashi since it lies in the southern state of India. Unlike the river in the north, the water tank in the Mahakuta temple is fed by a natural spring and is known to have healing properties as well as washing away sins.

Being a border town, Belgaum food is influenced by all 3 cuisines – South Maharashtra, Konkani and North Karnataka.

Uttara Karnataka Oota (North Karnataka meals) are thali meals generally served on a banana leaf in restaurants. The food items include Jowar Roti, Enngai palya means Brinjal curry, Soppina palya means green leafy vegetable curry, diced cucumber, Kosambari means salad, Papad , Groundnut chutney, Sambar , Dahi , Sambar , Rasam and Buttermilk.

Mandige also known as Mande or Chowde is the most important sweet dish of Belgaum . Traditionally served in weddings, it is also offered to god during festival puja . Mandige uses ingredients such as wheat flour, sugar powder, ghee, cardamom, and sesame seeds. The dough is laced with a mix of powdered sugar, sesame seeds, and ghee, rolled very thin and carefully transferred to be cooked over a spherical pot. They are then folded into neat bundles as it cooks. Mandige is perfect gifts as they have a shelf life of 2 weeks.

Like every Indian city, you may wonder what is Belgaum famous for especially when it comes to food.

Kunda, Kardantu and Mandige are Belgaum famous foods. Kunda is the famous Belgaum sweet and it would be unfair to leave the city without a box. After all kunda is a must buy souvenir from Belgaum. Belgaum kunda or Belagavi kunda is prepared using sugar, milk and curd that is cooked for long hours till the milk thickens into a solid form. The remainder is called a kunda .

Other cuisines like Punjabi, Gujarati, and Rajasthani are available in many restaurants. The recently opened Khau Katta in Belgaum is the perfect place to try different cuisines, get the feel of eating on street, yet have a safe, delicious, and hygienic experience.

Khau Katta is basically a small shop offering takeaway all in one place. There are currently about 40 eateries offering Indian street food as well as Indian Chinese options, continental, and others. The local variety Belagavi Alipak is a must-try!

When writing a blog on all about Belgaum how can I avoid shopping in Belgaum? Belgaum is famous for its brass utensils, jewelry, wood products, showpieces, and Silk sarees. Belgaum silk sarees are a brand in themselves and extremely popular in Maharashtra and Karnataka for their peculiar golden borders.

Belgaum is a hub for silk saree manufacturing and the sarees from here are supplied to most famous saree malls in Mumbai and Pune. So much so that it is on par with Yeola Paithani. All the traditional weaves and sarees are manufactured here like the Paithani Saree, Narayan Peth, Khun, and many more.

The Belgaum saree is a 100-year-old industry and has takers in South Asian countries. Food souvenirs from Belagavi that can be picked (other than Kunda and Mande) are pickles and chutneys. Local shops sell fresh groundnut and garlic chutney in dry forms so it has a higher shelf life. Red chili thecha and ranzak (types of chutneys) and amazing to pick up. Pickles such as raw mango, lemon, mainmula (coleus root) are also freshly prepared and have an amazing taste.

Belgaum has many businessmen and students coming in so there are a fair number of comfortable and affordable hotel options in Belagavi.

Best time to visit Belgaum

Belgaum has pleasant weather all year round. However, for the best experience, winter November to February is the best time to visit Belgaum. The monsoon is also preferred by visitors due to the waterfalls and greenery in and around the city. July is apparently the coldest month in Belgaum. However, monsoons are pretty harsh with incessant rains which may sometimes hamper moving around in the city.

Ganesh Chaturthi falls in September is around the end of the monsoon. According to me, Belgaum is dressed as a bride during this time and is perfect to visit.

Summer months are bearable and not as harsh as in western and northern India. Summer in Belgaum is full of the bounty with Ratnagiri Hafoos (Alphonso mangoes) and fresh Cashew Nuts that can be savored in so many different ways.

How to reach Belgaum

Belgaum Airport is located 10km away from the city in Sambra and it is connected only by domestic flights. Connections are improving every month with many cities directly getting connected thanks to low-cost small airlines. There are direct flights from Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Chennai.

Belgaum is located on the mainline of the Western Railways network which is why it is well linked by rail to other major destinations such as Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Goa, New Delhi, and Chennai.

Belgaum is well connected by road through the NH4 which basically connects Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. NH4A connects Karnataka and Goa. Belgaum to Bangalore distance is 510 km and takes about 12 hours by road.

Thanks to good road conditions, it is possible to self-drive or take a bus to Belgaum from Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. The Government of Maharashtra and the Government of Karnataka operate MSRTC and KSRTC buses respectively from various locations to Belgaum city.

Sustainable tips for Places to visit in Belgaum

This is a unique city that has cultural importance with an ample number of temples, mosques and churches so respect the sanctity of each of them during the festivals and during visits.
Respect the ancient structures of temples by not sitting on them or by carving or writing on them.
Observe peace and silence in temples and ashrams. Do not use mobile phones in temples.
Do not litter any of the tourist areas especially while hiking or near waterfalls.

Belgaum, the Bamboo Village or Belagavi as it is officially known, is a quiet place that rests in the foothills of the Western Ghats. 502 km from Bangalore and 154 km from Panaji, Belgaum enjoys a stable cool climate with the serenity of nature surrounding it in the form of mountains, rivers, and lush green forests. Ideal for groups visits with college-mates and colleagues; Belgaum is also a great honeymoon spot for couples.

Belgaum Fort

It is a colossal structure in the centre of the town. The fort is a grand example of religious unification in the days of yore and also of a heritage that was built upon by kings of many successive generations. At the entrance are two shrines of Durga and Ganapati coexisting with the mosques in the vicinity. One of the oldest forts in Karnataka, it has had the duty of protecting the state from many invaders. The Deccan, Indo-Sarcenic and the Chalukyan styles of architecture can be spotted in the arches, domes and gateways of the fort.

There is paid entry at the fort and no pets are allowed in. It is open on all days from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm.

Gokak Falls

The Gokak Falls are among the top attractions in Belgaum. The raging waters gushing over the gorge is a sight to behold. Chalukyan era monuments are found on either side of the mountaineous gorge. Another spot to look out near the falls is the Chalukyan style temple facing the river, dedicated to Lord Mahalingeshwara. Best time to pay a visit to the falls is between July and October.

Ramakrishna Ashrama

Swami Vivekananda stayed at the Ramakrishna Ashram for 12 days during his travels around India in 1892. The entire monument has been renovated and there has been a temple built in dedication to Ramakrishna Paramahansa. The ashram is a good retreat for meditation and spiritual bonding outside the hustle-bustle of the city. It is open on all seven days from 7am-7pm.

Kapileshwara Temple

One of the oldest temples of Karnataka which is also known by the name of “Dakshina Kashi”. It is one of the temples that pilgrims have to visit to be able to complete the 12 Jyotirlingas pilgrimage. There are interesting stories around the temple. One among them is how the linga originated in Belgaum itself. Shrines of Ganapati, Saibaba, shrine of the Navagraha or nine planets are housed in the temple. There is huge footfall during the Mahashivratri festival and during the Shraavan maas of the Hindu calendar.

The Kittur palace and fort are the perfect spot for history enthusiasts and archaeology buffs to visit when in Belgaum. The story of Rani Chennamma runs along the fort walls as one of the valiant rulers of the fort and a fierce woman warrior who revolted against the British. Nathapanthi matha, temples of Maruti (inside the fort), Kalmeshwara, Dyamavva and Basavanna are the main attractions inside the temple. The almost ruined fort is presently under the care of Karnataka state department of archaeology. A museum of archaeology has been established here with gems and relics from history.

Time to visit another folktale of Belgaum! Rakaskop or village of the demon is located 16 km from Belgaum. The tourists will encounter a huge cave in the shape of a human figure in sitting position. It serves as ‘evidence’ of the existence of a demon who lived in the village in the times of yore. The river Markandeya flows nearby providing a scenic value to the location.

Navilthirtha

Longing for picnics on your trips? Belgaum offers just the place with Navilthirtha. A valley between two hills with a lush green cover and amazing ambience, Navilthirtha is frequented by peacocks who add to its charm.

Kamal Basti, an ancient Belgaum Jain Temple, is surrounded by Chikki Basti ruins within the Belgaum Fort. This temple was constructed in the 10th century during the rule of Ralta dynasty. Bichirja, one of the Ministers of King Kartavirya IV, built the Kamla Basti temple in 1204 AD.

Kamal Basti got its name since it resembles a Lotus with 72 petals. On every petal, there are engraved names of 24 Tirthankaras from each period. The Garbhagriha of Kamal Basti has a stone-carved Sinhasan holding the idol of Lord Neminath. This was found in the forest 200 years ago. Since the 11th century, devotees worshipped Lord Sumatinath, Lord Adinath, and Lord Parsvanatha.

Kapileshwar Temple, one of Belgaum’s famous temples, is known as Kashi of South. Devotees must visit and seek blessings of Lord Shiva at this temple before visiting India’s 12 Jyotirlingas. KAMAL BASADI-BELAGAVI

Kamal Basadi (Jain Temple): This temple is of 10th Centuary AD and is under the protection of Archeological Dept. This temple is near the Belgaum Main Bus Stand. The two temples in the fort are known as Kamal Basadi (Mandir) and chikki basadi. Kamal basadi is so called because of the Gumbaj of the temple in the form of the lotus of 72 petals.

BELAGAVI FORT

Belagavi Fort or Belgaum Fort, is located in the city of Belagavi, in the Belagavi district, in Karnataka state, India. It was begun by Jaya Raya, also called Bichi Raja, an ally of the Ratta Dynasty, in the year 1204 AD. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries under different dynastic rulers of the region.

Belagavi Fort

is a stunning example of the coexistence of temples and mosques in perfect harmony. Although much of the original structure has been lost to time, the fort’s rich history is still evident. It is believed to have been built in the 12th century AD by the local Ratta rulers and was later renovated and expanded by successive rulers who held power in Belagavi.

Upon entering the fort, visitors are greeted by two shrines dedicated to Lord Ganpati and Goddess Durga. Additionally, four Matrika statues and a Mahishamardini can be seen. The Safa Masjid, one of two mosques located within the fort.

Kamal Basadi

Of the two basadis located within the fort, the Kamala Basadi stands out as the more prominent one. This magnificent structure was built in 1204 by Bichana (or Bichiraja), a minister of Kartavirya IV of the Ratta dynasty. The Kamala Basadi, also known as the Ratta Jinalaya, boasts a star-shaped garbhagriha, an ardhamantapa, and a vestibule that leads to the frontal mukhamantapa.

Within the garbhagriha, visitors will find a stunning seated image of Neminatha, the 22nd Jain Tirthankara, carved from black stone. The navaranga’s lathe-turned pillars are exquisitely engraved with floral and geometric designs, adding to the Basadi’s overall beauty.

One of the most striking features of the Kamala Basadi is its well-executed mukhamantapa. The ceiling of this area is adorned with intricate floral designs, with a pendant of lotus projecting from the center. This stunning creation in stone is the reason why the Basadi is named Kamala (Lotus) Basadi.

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

The 2024 NFL Draft is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the football. There are potentially six quarterbacks, 12 offensive lineman and 10 receivers who could go in round one. That could end up causing multiple teams to try and make a trade to target a certain player.

There have been multiple teams rumored to try and move up in the NFL Draft and the latest rumors have that team being the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs have had some issues at the wide receiver position over the last couple of years once they traded Tyreek Hill. Now, it hasn't exactly mattered that much as they have won back-to-back Super Bowls. But with Travis Kelce in his mid-30s, they will need to find an answer on the outside.

The phrasing speedy wide receivers is intersting. We know that Andy Reid knows how to use speed with his success using Hill and that means it could be Texas WR Xavier Worthy. He ran a 4.21 40-yard dash and has special movement skills in space.
