5 Best Ways to Experience Balinese Coffee Tourism Near Ubud

✔️ Quick Guide – Best Balinese Coffee Plantations in Ubud

Balinese Coffee Plantations are a popular tourist activity where you can see how coffee has been traditionally produced on the island. Don’t expect to see a true plantation where acres of coffee beans are grown for export. Rather, a “Coffee Plantation” in Bali usually refers to a tourist activity where you learn about the history of coffee production on the island, and get to taste different beans and preparation styles. It’s loads of fun if you’re a coffee fan, and the coffee farms are also one of the best places to buy souvenirs to bring back home.

The Best Balinese Coffee Plantations To Visit from Ubud

✔️ satria agrowisata 2.

This coffee plantation doesn’t have the best reviews – and for a good reason! It’s not really a plantation, Satria doesn’t grow the coffee they serve there, it’s more of a small agricultural museum and gift shop.  Also… the free coffee and tea tasting they serve is really sweet.

The reason I am recommending Satria is that it’s located within Ubud, while other coffee plantations are a 20-30-minute drive outside of Ubud, and Satria is 100% free to visit. The short tour of the Satria Balinese Coffee Plantation, the small museum on how coffee is made, and the dozen tasting beverages they provide are 100% free.

Satria only makes money if you decide you like the coffee from the tasting enough to purchase a full cup or buy something from their gift shop.I f you’re on an extreme budget and need a free thing to do in Ubud, Satria is a fun stop!

✔️ Bali Pulina

Bali Pulina charges a 100K Indonesian Rupiah ($7) entrance fee for their plantation, but it includes a tour, coffee tasting, and a free snack which makes it well worth it. Located 20 minutes outside of Ubud, you can take in gorgeous views of the Balinese countryside from their cafe, which has a lovely viewpoint.

✔️ OKA Agriculture Bali

OKA is a half-hour drive from Ubud, which makes it the most remote on this list, but OKA Agriculture has the best views and is 100% free to visit, which makes it well worth the trip! The OKA complex is set up like a giant tree house and is definitely my favorite plantation on this list. (Sorry I don’t have a good photo!)

✔️ Alas Harum

Alas Harum Agrotourism is a day club/restaurant / all-in-one activity in the Tegallalang region of Ubud. Alas Harum has a bunch of different activities like ziplining, pools, rice terrace, photo spots, high swings, and their Kopi Luwak Coffee museum.

While there’s the most to do at Alas Harum, it’s also the most expensive. To enter the complex you need to pay a 50K IDR entrance fee ($3.50) and coffee tasting is 118K ($8) on top of the entrance fee. If you would like to try their Kopi Luwak coffee, it’s another 118K per cup.

✔️ Seniman Coffee Studio & Ubud Coffee Roastery

Although not a coffee plantation, I would recommend this coffee shop in Ubud to anyone who wants to experience the best of Indonesian coffee but doesn’t have time to make a day trip to a coffee plantation.

Seniman Coffee Studio and Ubud Coffee Roastery are artisan coffee shops in Ubud Center. You can come here to sample local brews, as well as buy coffee beans from all over Indonesia grown on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Flores, etc.

The history of coffee in Indonesia goes all the way back to colonial rule when the Dutch brought coffee beans to the island nation from Yemen in the 1600s. Since then, coffee has played an integral role in the Indonesian economy and agriculture. Recently, Indonesia was the 4th largest producer of coffee in the whole world!

You can learn about Balinese coffee agriculture, as well as some of their historical practices like  Kopi Luwak Coffee , which is a special Indonesian coffee made from the excrement of the Asian Palm Civet.

Coffee makes the perfect souvenir from a trip to Bali since it’s portable, won’t perish, and will make your suitcase smell fantastic!

Could you please post at least one photo showing an actual plantation on Bali – like showing some hundred coffee bushes one close to another?

Hi Rudi, “Coffee Plantation” is the name of a common tourism attraction in Bali that they have all over the island which takes you through the process of how they process coffee beans historically, and provides samples of locally grown coffee and chocolate. Usually there will be coffee and cocoa trees you can see as part of the process, but it’s not where the beans are being grown en-masse for export.

I know Munduk Moding Plantation & Resort actually grows some coffee beans on site, along with a variety of other produce, but a lot of these Balinese “plantations” include samplers of different beans from all over Indonesia. For example, you can try a Sumatra coffee bean blend, and Java blend, which are different islands in Indonesia, along with a Kintamani blend, which are beans grown in Bali in an area East of Ubud.

Things to know before you visit coffee plantations in Bali

Packs of coffee beans for sale

The hills of Bali make an excellent climate for growing coffee – so there are LOADS of plantations to choose from. In fact this can actually feel a bit overwhelming. We will recommend some of THE BEST plantations to visit.

There are a few important things that you need to know before you visit coffee plantations in Bali:

  • Not all “coffee plantations” in Bali actually grow coffee! Some “plantations” have gardens and may have a single coffee bush. But really they are set up to give you samples and run shops selling coffee.
  • Not all coffee plantations in Bali are ethical. Some coffee plantations may not give you the real deal (especially if you’re looking for more specialist blends). AND in some cases coffee plantations keep Luwaks in captivity (small civet cats) to make Kopi Luwak. More on this soon.
  • Many of the coffee plantations have shops attached. Be aware that coffee in these shops may actually be well above the market price – sometimes charging a lot more per gram than the airport.
  • Some of the best coffee plantations in Bali are linked to resorts. Yes, you can actually stay at a coffee resort! This may actually be the BEST and most ethical way to visit a plantation in Bali.

What is Kopi Luwak?

Munduk moding Kopi Luwak

Ok, if you’re visiting the coffee plantations in Bali you will quickly come across Kopi Luwak. This is one of those unique and weird things that coffee conesures love. Kopi Luwak, also known as civet coffee, is a type of coffee that is made from coffee beans that have been eaten and excreted by civet cats. The civet cat, a small mammal native to Southeast Asia, eats the coffee cherries for their fruit pulp but is unable to digest the coffee beans. The beans are excreted in the civet’s feces, which are then collected, cleaned, and roasted to produce Kopi Luwak. Apparently the bean itself doesn’t actually touch the poop – that’s what local producers tell you anyway!

kopi luwak beans

Kopi Luwak lays claim to being one of the most expensive coffees in the world. In Europe expect to pay around $20 or more for a cup. In Bali you can get a cup of Kopi Luwak. The process of digestion and fermentation in the civet’s digestive system is thought to remove the acidity of the beans resulting in a smoother and lower caffeine blend. BUT is it all good???

Is Kopi Luwak ethical?

Luwak fox

While kopi luwak is a VERY POPULAR coffee its growing popularity has led to increased demand, which has put pressure on civet populations. In some cases, civets are kept in captivity and force-fed coffee beans. It is important to consider the ethical and environmental implications of consuming any product, including kopi luwak. If you are interested in trying kopi luwak, it is important to research the source of the coffee and ensure that it is produced in an ethical and sustainable manner.

What can you learn at the coffee plantations in Bali?

coffee demonstrations

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, and it all starts with the growing and production process. The following are the steps involved in coffee growing and production:

Coffee beans are actually seeds of the coffee plant, which is typically grown in tropical regions around the world like Bali. The planting process involves sowing the seeds in nurseries, where they are tended to until they become seedlings. The seedlings are then transplanted to their permanent growing location.

2 Growing

Coffee plants require specific growing conditions to thrive, including a warm and humid climate with ample rainfall (the hills of Bali are perfect for this!) They are usually grown on hillsides, as the sloping terrain helps with water drainage. Coffee plants typically take about three to four years to reach maturity and begin producing coffee beans.

3 Harvesting

Coffee beans are harvested by hand, and the process varies depending on the type of coffee being grown. For example, arabica coffee is typically picked when the berries are ripe, while robusta coffee is often harvested when the berries are still green.

4 Processing

After the coffee beans are harvested, they need to be processed to remove the outer layers and reveal the coffee bean inside. There are two primary methods of processing coffee: the wet process and the dry process. The wet process involves using water to remove the outer layers, while the dry process involves allowing the beans to dry in the sun before removing the outer layers.

Once the coffee beans are processed, they are ready for roasting. Roasting coffee involves heating the beans to a specific temperature, which brings out their unique flavors and aromas. Roasting can range from light to dark, with each level of roasting producing different flavors. In Bali roasting is done over a wood fire in large roasting pans – most coffee plantations have a demo of roasting and may even let you have a go.

6 Grinding and Brewing

Finally, the roasted coffee beans are ground and brewed to make the final product. The method of brewing can also vary, with options including drip coffee, espresso, and French press.

Is it worth visiting a coffee plantation in Bali?

Indonesia bali swing

YES we do recommend a visit to the coffee plantations in Bali. But keep your expectations in check. Many of the plantations are set up for tourists and in some cases prices may be high. You may also see captive Luwaks which are used to produce Kopi Luwak. If you’re looking for an authentic and ethical coffee plantation in Bali the we recommend Munduk Moding or the Wanagiri Coffee plantation.

The Creation of Luwak Coffee

Civets indulge in the consumption of coffee berries, relishing the fleshy pulp surrounding them. During their stay in the civet’s stomach, proteolytic enzymes subtly alter the beans, breaking down longer peptides and increasing the presence of free amino acids. As these beans navigate through the civet’s digestive system, they retain their distinct shape. Following a meticulous process of collection, rigorous cleansing, sun drying, gentle roasting, and expert brewing, these beans produce an exceptionally aromatic coffee known for its reduced bitterness. It has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most exclusive and costly coffee varieties.

Luwak Coffee Experience

The Luwak Coffee Experience

Have you ever considered consuming coffee produced from an unusual source? Believe it or not, the world’s most exclusive and expensive coffee is crafted from a rather surprising ingredient – feces. During a trip to Bali, Indonesia, a visit to the renowned Luwak Coffee Plantation provided insight into the intricate process of producing this specialty coffee. Visitors are guided through each step, from production to a coffee tasting experience, all set against the backdrop of the lush jungle terrain.

Initially met with skepticism, the revelation of the painstaking craftsmanship and precise techniques involved in utilizing feces in the creation of this highly acclaimed coffee left a lasting impression.

Luwak Coffee: The Most Expensive Coffee

The World’s Most Expensive Coffee

Kopi luwak holds the title of being the world’s most expensive coffee, primarily owing to its unconventional production method. This unique brew is crafted from coffee beans that have undergone a rather unusual journey – they have been digested by a specific Indonesian cat-like creature known as the palm civet, also referred to as the civet cat. It’s no wonder that kopi luwak has earned the colloquial moniker of “cat poop” coffee.

Luwak: The Secret Behind Luwak Coffee's

Bali’s Unique Animal-Influenced Coffee

Coffee beans, essentially seeds found within cherry-sized fruits on coffee plants, require extraction for coffee preparation. This extraction is typically achieved through fermentation, a process that humans have developed various methods for over time. However, fermentation also occurs organically in the wild, thanks to the digestive systems of certain animals.

At the Coffee Plantation, for instance, civet cats consume the ripest coffee berries, initiating a digestive process that naturally separates the seeds from the fruit while inducing fermentation. Approximately 24 hours later, the seeds are excreted by the cat, marking the commencement of the coffee-making process.

Subsequently, after collecting the cat’s waste, the beans undergo a meticulous process, involving careful washing, drying, pounding, and ultimately, roasting over an open flame. Some aficionados claim that this natural fermentation method results in a final cup of coffee that is notably smoother and less acidic compared to other brews. Keen to taste the difference, a request to partake in a tasting was eagerly made.

The Tour and the “Coffee Cats” Encounter

best coffee plantation to visit in bali

The tour offered a comprehensive, step-by-step explanation of the coffee production process and the chance to interact with the renowned “coffee cats.” These animals had an unusual and somewhat intimidating appearance, resembling a combination of a possum, cat, and rat. However, despite their peculiar looks, it was remarkable to observe their close interactions. One pair of cats, in particular, caught the eye as they engaged in an affectionate cuddling session. This led to the assumption that they might be a mated pair or perhaps close companions with a unique bond.

Bali, the Island of the Gods, is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and scenic landscapes. However, many travelers may not know that Bali is also a hub for coffee production, with a reputation for producing some of the world’s finest coffee.

The History of Coffee Production in Bali

Best time to visit coffee plantations in bali, how to get to bali’s coffee plantations, coffee-making workshops and classes.

In this article, we’ll delve into the history of coffee production in Bali, explore the unique flavors of Balinese coffee, and guide you through touring the coffee plantations in Bali. Whether you’re a coffee lover or simply looking for a unique travel experience, Bali’s coffee plantations are not to be missed. So grab a cup of joe, sit back, and let’s dive into the world of Balinese coffee.

Bali has a long history of coffee cultivation, dating back to the 17th century when Dutch colonizers introduced coffee to the island.

Initially, coffee cultivation in Bali was limited to small plantations in the highland regions of the island. However, by the early 20th century, coffee had become an important part of Bali’s economy, and coffee plantations began to pop up across the island. Today, Bali is recognized as a major coffee-producing region, with a focus on sustainable and high-quality coffee.

One of the most famous Balinese coffees is Kopi Luwak, which is made from beans that have been eaten and excreted by the Asian palm civet. While it may seem unappealing to some, Kopi Luwak is prized for its unique flavor and has become a luxury item among coffee connoisseurs. However, the production of Kopi Luwak has been controversial due to the inhumane treatment of civets in some coffee farms.

Aside from Kopi Luwak, Bali produces a variety of high-quality coffees, including Arabica, Robusta, and Kintamani. Arabica coffee, which is grown in the highland regions of Bali, is known for its complex flavor and aroma. Robusta coffee, which is grown in lower elevation areas, is known for its high caffeine content and bold flavor. Kintamani coffee, which is grown in the Kintamani highland region, is known for its bright acidity and fruity notes.

The coffee production process in Bali is highly specialized, with farmers using traditional methods to ensure the best possible flavor. The process begins with the harvesting of coffee cherries, which are then processed to extract the beans. The beans are then sorted, roasted, and packaged for export. Bali’s coffee industry has gained a reputation for producing some of the highest-quality coffee in the world, with a focus on sustainable farming practices.

In recent years, Bali’s coffee industry has seen a surge in tourism, with many visitors coming to the island specifically to explore its coffee plantations. Taking a guided tour of Bali’s coffee plantations is an excellent way to learn more about the coffee production process and sample some of the island’s best coffee. Some of the most popular coffee plantations in Bali include the Bali Pulina Coffee Plantation, the Tegallalang Rice Terrace and Coffee Plantation, and the Kintamani Organic Coffee Farm.

At these plantations, visitors can learn about the various coffee varieties grown in Bali, watch the coffee production process in action, and even participate in coffee tastings. In addition to tours, many plantations also offer workshops and classes on coffee-making, where visitors can learn how to roast and brew coffee, as well as make latte art.

Bali’s coffee production has a rich history that dates back to the Dutch colonial period. Today, Bali is recognized as a major coffee-producing region, with a focus on sustainable and high-quality coffee. Bali’s coffee industry has become an important part of the island’s economy and has attracted a growing number of tourists in recent years. Whether you’re a coffee lover or simply looking for a unique travel experience, Bali’s coffee plantations are not to be missed.

The best time to visit Bali’s coffee plantations is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During this period, the weather is relatively stable, and rainfall is minimal, making it an ideal time to explore the coffee farms. Visitors can expect clear skies and warm temperatures, with the daytime temperature hovering around 30°C.

However, it’s worth noting that the weather in Bali can be unpredictable, and rain can fall at any time of the year. In the wet season, which runs from November to March, the rain can be heavy, and some roads to the coffee farms may become impassable.

Visitors should also be aware that Bali’s coffee harvest season runs from May to August. During this time, the plantations can get busy, and some may be closed to visitors. However, it’s also an excellent opportunity to witness the harvesting process and learn about the different stages of coffee production.

It’s also worth noting that many coffee plantations offer tours and tastings throughout the year, so visitors can still enjoy the coffee experience, even outside of the harvest season. Some tours may need to be booked in advance, so it’s worth checking ahead to avoid disappointment.

Overall, Bali’s coffee plantations are a must-visit for coffee lovers and those interested in learning about the local culture and traditions. With its stunning scenery, friendly locals, and delicious coffee, it’s easy to see why Bali’s coffee is some of the best in the world. Whether you’re looking to taste the local brew, learn about the coffee-making process, or simply soak up the stunning surroundings, Bali’s coffee plantations are an excellent destination for any traveler.

Bali’s coffee plantations are located across the island, and getting to them is relatively easy. Most coffee plantations offer tours, which typically include transportation to and from the plantation, making it a hassle-free way to explore Bali’s coffee culture.

One popular way to get to the coffee plantations is by booking a Bali car rental with driver or joining a guided tour. Private driver service is widely available in Bali and can be arranged through your hotel or a local travel agency. Alternatively, there are many guided tours available that include visits to coffee plantations, which can be booked online or through local tour operators.

Another way to get to the coffee plantations is by renting a scooter or motorbike. This is a popular option for travelers who want more flexibility and independence, as it allows them to explore at their own pace. However, it’s worth noting that Bali’s roads can be busy and chaotic, so this option is only recommended for experienced riders. But this option is planned to be prohibited by the Bali’s government

For those looking for a more eco-friendly way to explore Bali’s coffee plantations, there are also cycling tours available. These tours typically start from Ubud and take visitors on a scenic ride through the countryside, stopping at various coffee plantations along the way.

Regardless of how you choose to get to the coffee plantations, it’s important to remember to dress appropriately and bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Bali’s weather can be hot and humid, so it’s essential to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

Getting to Bali’s coffee plantations is relatively easy, with plenty of options available to suit different preferences and budgets. Whether you choose to join a guided tour, rent a scooter, or cycle through the countryside, exploring Bali’s coffee culture is a must-do activity for any traveler visiting the island.

Visiting Bali’s coffee plantations is not just about seeing the beautiful scenery and learning about the coffee-making process; it’s also an opportunity to learn how to make your own delicious coffee. Many of Bali’s coffee plantations offer workshops and classes on coffee-making, which can be a fun and educational experience for coffee lovers.

These workshops and classes typically cover the entire coffee-making process, from roasting the beans to brewing the coffee. Participants get a chance to roast their own coffee beans, learn about different brewing techniques, and taste different types of coffee.

One popular workshop is the Luwak coffee-making workshop, where participants learn about the process of making Luwak coffee, the most expensive coffee in the world. Luwak coffee is made from coffee beans that have been eaten and excreted by civet cats, giving the coffee a unique flavor. Participants get a chance to roast and brew their own Luwak coffee, and learn about the history and production process of this unique coffee.

Another popular workshop is the traditional Balinese coffee-making workshop, where participants learn about the traditional way of making coffee in Bali. This workshop typically involves roasting coffee beans over an open fire, grinding the beans with a mortar and pestle, and brewing the coffee using a traditional Balinese coffee pot.

Coffee-making workshops and classes are usually held in small groups, making it a personalized and hands-on experience. They are suitable for coffee lovers of all levels, whether you’re a beginner or an expert.

In addition to the workshops offered by the coffee plantations, there are also several independent coffee-making schools and classes in Bali. These schools offer more in-depth courses on coffee-making, and can be a great way to learn about coffee if you’re interested in pursuing a career in the coffee industry.

Coffee-making workshops and classes are a fun and educational way to experience Bali’s coffee culture. Whether you’re interested in making your own Luwak coffee or learning about traditional Balinese coffee-making techniques, there’s a workshop or class for everyone. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn about coffee and create your own delicious brew.

A visit to a coffee plantation in Bali is a must-do activity for any coffee lover or curious traveler. With its rich coffee culture and stunning natural beauty, Bali offers a unique experience that is both educational and enjoyable.

During a visit to a coffee plantation, travelers can learn about the process of coffee farming and production, taste different types of coffee, and even try their hand at roasting their own beans. However, Kopi Luwak is not without its controversies. There have been concerns about animal welfare in Kopi Luwak farms (read our post here to learn more) and the authenticity of products. We will say that most, if not all of the Kopi Luwak in Bali comes from civets that are reared, and not wild. If that concerns you, then we wouldn’t recommend visiting these farms.

But if you’re just a traveller looking to try an authentic cup of Kopi Luwak in Bali, in this list we’ll be sharing some farms that you can visit. These farms will take you on a short tour through their coffee process, how they care for their civets, and let you sample some authentic Kopi Luwak.

What is Bali Coffee?

Bali offers a wide variety of coffee. From flavorful single-origin blends to the famous Kopi Luwak. You can find fantastic cafes in and around many popular destinations like Uluwatu, Canggu, and Kuta. But don't stop your coffee journey in tourist areas. Traveling inland from Denpasar through Ubud , Kintamani, to Amed, you'll discover a range of unique cafes and coffee plantations all over the island.

What is the Coffee Culture like in Bali?

Woman in a coffee shop in Bali

Bali's coffee culture is brewing with excitement and opportunity. Since Bali's official reopening since the pandemic, there's a new cafe opening up almost every day. This is especially true in areas like Uluwatu, which are growing in popularity. As a result, you'll find that a quality café isn't too far away throughout the island. Most cafes roast their own beans and have various methods of brewing coffee, such as using an espresso machine , pour-over , Aeropress , Chemex , and a Siphon.

Bali's rich volcanic earth, tropical climate, and high altitude make it the perfect place for producing world-class coffee. Having magnificent coffee plantations, expert roasting experience, and professional baristas has made Bali a stand-out destination for coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Over and above having specialty cafes, Bali also has various methods of sourcing and making coffee. For example, Bali is known worldwide for its exclusive and expensive Kopi Luwak. Kopi Luwak is a coffee bean ingested and digested by a Civet. All over Bali, you will find small cafes that take you on tour, show you how traditional Luwak Coffee is made, and provide you with a platter of tasters to give you a whole Balinese coffee experience. Here's a short list of different types of coffee in Bali:

How Did Coffee Come to Bali?

Many believe that the Dutch brought coffee to Bali as they did so for most parts of Indonesia. This, however, is a common misconception.

The Dutch undoubtedly contributed to bringing coffee into Bali, but traders from Lombok also introduced coffee to Bali in the early 20th century. Drawn by the rich volcanic soil and humid climate in Kintamani near Mt. Batur, they saw great potential for coffee plantations. This led to Kintamani being one of the biggest and fastest-growing regions for coffee plantations in Bali.

Coffee Plantations in Bali

Bali has a few great coffee plantations that produce world-class coffee. Let's take a look at some plantations you can visit in Bali.

Bali Pulina

Bali Pulina is a Kopi Luwak Plantation that provides an authentic Balinese coffee-tasting experience. Here you can view the civets and demonstrate how the coffee is made. They are also ideally located with a view of the forest and rice terraces.

Segara Windhu Coffee Plantation

Segara Windhu is a plantation found in the region of Kintamani. Here you can learn about robusta, Arabica, and Luwak coffee. As a part of the tour, your guide will also teach you how to brew the perfect cup of coffee with different beans.

Teba Sari Bali Agrotourism

This plantation is located in the cultural and creative hub of Bali, Ubud. At Teba Sari Bali Agrotourism you can experience excellent Luwak coffee with traditional Balinese snacks to compliment your coffee while you enjoy their beautiful gardens.

What Roasts Are in Bali?

Arabica & robusta.

The most prominent bean in Bali is the Arabica bean or robusta bean . Most of these crops are found in the Kintamani region surrounding Mt.Batur. What better place to grow beans than in the rich volcanic soils of one of Bali's dormant volcanoes? The Arabica beans have a relatively sweet and soft taste. With twice the amount of sugar and 60% lipids, the Arabica bean is less bitter and has a cleaner texture than most coffees.

Robusta is definitely a more intense bean with a full-bodied and robust flavor. It has a distinctive nutty aftertaste and contains about 83% more caffeine than Arabica. The Robusta blend is perfect for those who prefer a stronger cup of coffee.

Luwak Coffee

Kopi Luwak is a specialty coffee made in Bali and other areas of Indonesia. Its fame is accredited to how it is made, and it's among one of the most expensive coffees in the world. Also known as Civet Coffee, Kopi Luwak is sourced from the dung of the civet. A civet is a small cat-like animal that eats the fruit from the coffee plant and excretes the bean.

The civet's stomach digests and ferments the coffee cherries because of its digestive enzymes. The process removes the chaff and flesh while fermenting the leftover bean. Once the civet excretes the beans, we move on to the following steps: cleaning, roasting, and packaging.

How is Luwak Coffee made?

Coffee beans in the feces of an Asian palm civet

The Balinese use an ancient and traditional method of roasting Luwak coffee. Let's look at the process of how Luwak Coffee is made;

Collect The Coffee Beans

The collectors will gather the dung from the civet and then clean the coffee beans.

Clean the Coffee Beans

To clean the beans, they use hot water and let them air dry for approximately one week. Once the beans are clean, the top layer of the bean is peeled off. Now the bean is ready for roasting.

Roasting the Coffee Beans

The roasting process takes around 45 minutes to one hour, depending on whether you want a medium or dark roast . Luwak coffee is generally roasted in a pan or pot placed over a fire, similar to a drum roaster. A person stirs the coffee beans while they cook.

Roasting the Luwak bean requires the person with this task to rely on their sight and hearing. As you cook the bean, it gets darker in color. This is a simple tell to know when it's ready. Roasters also listen for two popping sounds from the beans when they release water and oxygen. They then hand-grind the coffee and package it.

Making A Cup of Luwak Coffee

Making a cup of Luwak coffee is relatively simple. First, take around 14 grams of Luwak coffee and place it in a cup. Next, fill it with hot water, stir, and wait for the coffee to settle before you drink it. Unlike using a french press or your usual filter coffee, there will be many granules. Therefore, when you get the coffee close to the top of the cup, try to avoid sipping a large number of coffee granules.

Why Is Kopi Luwak so Valuable?

How Kopi Luwak is made and its unique origins are among the most significant factors that make it so expensive. As you can imagine from what we've learned from the process of sourcing the Luwak Coffee beans, the intriguing and traditional method of making Kopi Luwak is time-consuming and specific. As a result, Kopi Luwak beans can cost anywhere between $100 and $600 per pound.

Where to try Luwak Coffee in Bali.

You can find Luwak Coffee all over Bali. In Uluwatu, there are three small plantations that you can visit, all within a few minutes of each other. The friendly staff will take you on a guided tour of the plantation, give detailed explanations of what coffee beans they grow, and demonstrate the process of roasting the coffee.

For around RP 50 000 ( $3.20 ), you can taste all of their different roasts and some specialty teas. I loved Coffee Luwak Bukit Sari and was impressed with the service and attention during the tour.

If you want to experience a more extensive Luwak plantation, go to Segara Windhu Coffee Plantation in Kintamani.

Final Thoughts

Bali is the go-to place for the coffee enthusiast! With an extensive and enthusiastic coffee culture and the added benefit of experiencing traditionally made Kopi Luwak, you can't go wrong with coffee in Bali. Trying the different cafes and coffees in Bali should be on every avid coffee drinker's bucket list. If you are lucky enough to be in Bali, take the time to visit the best coffee shops in Ubud . A visit to Luwak coffee plantations in Bali

Roasting the most expensive coffee in the world, from cat poop.

We also stop at a coffee plantations , where you able to sample local blends. These included the prized Kopi Luwak , or beans that have been eaten by the civet cat , not-really-digested, then pooped out, collected up, cleaned, roasted and ground for our drinking pleasure.

bali luwak civet cat

Kopi luwak or civet coffee is a coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract.

tasting luwak coffee bali drying process

A civet eats the berries for their fleshy pulp. In its stomach, proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. Passing through a civet's intestines the beans are then defecated, keeping their shape. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world .

Have you tried this coffee before? Is it worth paying top dollar for it?

Best coffee spots in bali.

Table of Contents

If you’re like me, you can only begin your day with a good cuppa and always looking for the best coffee spots. Bali is a paradise for coffee enthusiasts like us.

I’ve roamed the island, trying out various cafes, and narrowed down my top choices for you. Bali has everything from hidden gems in rice paddies to trendy spots with fantastic ocean views.

Personally, I loved how each spot had its unique atmosphere and vibe, making every coffee experience special and memorable.

In this guide, I’ll share my top picks for the best coffee spots in Bali so that you can make the most of your next trip there.

If you want to make the most of your Bali trip, check out the Best Things to do in Bali .

Expat. Roasters

Location: Petitenget St No.1a, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Badung Regency, Bali 80361, Indonesia

It was started by head barista Shae Macnamara, Expat. Roasters is more than just a coffee shop. It’s a specialty coffee producer and wholesale and training center. And it’s not just me saying it. They were the IRC Champion in 2019.

I loved that this spot works closely with local Indonesian producers and farmers to source the finest quality beans.

They even go as far as working directly with farmers within 40 kilometers of their roastery, allowing them to experiment with processing methods and farming techniques to produce the best coffee available ultimately.

The spot’s urban and fun atmosphere is taking Bali’s coffee-sipping scene to new heights. Trust me. You won’t want to miss a sip of their Expat blend.

Blacklist Coffee Roasters

Location: Jl. Tanah Barak No.6, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Founded in 2014, Blacklist Coffee Roasters is a multi-award-winning coffee roaster based in Perth, Western Australia, and is one of the leading names in Australian Specialty Coffee. They even won the Golden Bean 2020 Overall champion .

In 2020, they opened a roastery, cafe, restaurant, and bar in Canggu, and it was an exceptional experience. I had the chance to taste different coffee roasts from different origins, which was indeed an enlightening experience.

If you’re a coffee enthusiast, this is a must-try to learn fascinating facts about roasts and drinking etiquette.

So much more than just a specialty coffee shop, Blacklist Coffee Roasters in Canggu is where you can sip and sample your way through an entire coffee-tasting experience.

Hungry Bird

Location: Jl. Raya Semat Jl. Segara Perancak No.86, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

If you’re a coffee lover visiting Bali, add Hungry Bird to your list of must-visit spots. The coffee here is top-notch, and the experience is truly one of a kind.

From the moment you step into the cafe, you can tell that the team at Hungry Bird takes their coffee seriously.

They’ve been supplying notable cafes in Bali and across Indonesia with quality coffee since 2013, and it’s clear that they have a passion for the craft.

The beans are sourced from local farms and are produced with the fair trade system in mind, which is a nice touch.

What sets this spot apart is the way they work with its clients. Instead of focusing solely on their brand, they help their clients push and shape their own.

They also provide high-level barista training to help guide their clients’ teams to create the ideal cup for their customers.

The owner, Edo, has an inspiring story. He used to roast beans in his bedroom after fixing a broken coffee machine he bought online. He then opened Hungry Bird as a small coffee shop, and it eventually became popular with local surfers.

Now, it’s one of the most popular spots in the area with its micro-roaster and cupping room.

The coffee is delicious, the latte art is beautiful, the service is excellent, and the prices are affordable. It’s also a great spot to grab a coffee and get some work done.

Revolver Espresso

Location: Jl. Kayu Aya No.Gang 51, Seminyak, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

The coffee here is outstanding, and their breakfast menu is even better. The staff is amicable, and the service is excellent. It’s a little off the main road, so it could be considered a hidden gem.

But trust me. It’s worth seeking out.

Revolver is one of the oldest specialty coffee shops in Seminyak, and they have been instrumental in starting Bali’s long-standing love affair with java.

The breakfast menu is classic western with a touch of Bali, and my favorite part is that they do a Long Mach topped up.

Revolver Espresso is the place to go if you’re looking for fantastic coffee with a great atmosphere.

Seniman Coffee Studio

Location: Jl. Sri Wedari No.5, Banjar Taman Kelod, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Seniman Coffee Studio is a must-visit for any coffee lover.

As one of Indonesia’s leading specialty coffee brands, the shop and cafe offer a wide variety of world-class beans from all over the world, including Africa, South and Central America, and Indonesia.

The on-site micro-roastery, brew bar, and shop with every piece of coffee equipment you could wish for make it a one-stop shop for all things coffee. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff was great, and the coffee was one of the best I had tried in Ubud.

It can get busy, but enjoying the delicious coffee and relaxing rocking chairs is worth it. I highly recommend checking out the nitro options.

If you’re interested in learning more about coffee, they also offer tasting workshops on home-brew, roasting, making the perfect espresso, and even latte art.

Ubud Coffee Roastery

Ubud Coffee Roastery is a must-visit for coffee lovers in Ubud . The cafe sources its beans locally from Kintamani and roasts them on-site to perfection.

As a coffee enthusiast, I was impressed by the quality of the coffee, and the barista was incredibly knowledgeable and efficient despite the busy afternoon crowd.

The cafe may have limited seating, but it’s air-conditioned and a great spot to recharge.

You can even take home a bag of their delicious beans. Highly recommend visiting for a great cup of coffee.

Location: Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.38A, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Cafe Vida is an organic restaurant & boutique espresso coffee shop located in the heart of Canggu.

Not only is the food delicious, with standout dishes like the Shakshuka and Miso avocado toast, but they also prioritize using only the best local organic produce and are environmentally conscious with their composting system and use of recycled materials.

The coffee at Cafe Vida is a highlight of the menu. Made with only the best local organic produce, free from chemicals and fertilizers, sourced from permaculture farms on the volcanic soils of Bali.

They only use high-quality beans, roasted to perfection, to create a smooth and rich taste. The café also has a boutique espresso coffee shop, where you can enjoy a wide range of coffee drinks such as latte, cappuccino, Americano, or flat white.

The barista is knowledgeable and efficient, ensuring that every cup is brewed to perfection.

Not only that, but they also offer cold brew coffee, a low-acid, high-caffeine coffee that’s both smooth and refreshing. The cold brew is sugar-free, dairy-free, healthy, and organic.

It’s a perfect drink for Bali’s balmy climate.

The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, with a great outdoor area and a chill vibe. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the space is like a little tropical oasis.

It’s an excellent spot for those looking for a healthy and sustainable meal option.

Location: Jl. Munduk Catu No.1, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

I highly recommend BGS Bali for coffee and surf enthusiasts.

The coffee shop serves delicious and smooth Mandheling coffee from Sumatra, and their Almond Milk Latte is truly the best I’ve had on the island. The atmosphere is amiable, with a community-driven vibe, and the staff is welcoming and happy.

The shop is also a surf shop, selling all surf essentials, making it a great spot to hang out and chat with locals and resident expats.

BGS Bali has a surf-and-turf vibe: the shop’s decor is beachy and quirky. Surfboards, tiki torches, and driftwood line its shelves while funky clothes hang on hangers throughout the store.

They also use biodegradable cups, which is better for the environment.

Check out their flagship store in Dreamland and Uluwatu for great coffee and surf gear.

Satu-Satu Coffee Company

Location: Jl. Pantai Berawa No.36, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

I highly recommend Satu-Satu Coffee Company for coffee lovers in Berawa.

The renowned Sudana family runs the coffee shop, producing some of the best coffee in Bali since 1985.

They use traditional Balinese methods to ensure the highest level of organic coffee, resulting in superior freshness and flavor.

Indonesia’s government provided Satu-Satu with the machinery and equipment needed to facilitate its growth, including providing a space for the cafe in Berawa.

The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, with friendly staff and delicious food. The brunch menu is extensive and affordable, with a variety of options.

My favorites are the ruccola panini, veggie breakfast, lady gaga bowl, and omelet. The coffee is also excellent and served with an onsite roastery.

Bootstrap Cold Brew Coffee

Location: Tumbak Bayuh, Mengwi, Badung Regency, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Cold brew coffee is becoming increasingly popular, and Bootstrap Cold Brew Coffee is leading the way in Bali.

The cold brew is smooth, refreshing, and packed with caffeine, making it the perfect pick-me-up on a hot day. The fact that it’s made with Kintamani Single Origin Arabica beans, which are grown on family-run farms in Bali, adds an extra layer of authenticity and taste.

I appreciate that it’s sugar-free, dairy-free, healthy, and organic. The team at Bootstrap is dedicated to sustainable sourcing and production, which is evident in the quality of their product.

It’s not a surprise that their cold brew is so popular. It’s now bottled and sold to other top spots across the island and even Singapore.

I highly recommend Bootstrap Cold Brew Coffee to anyone looking for a delicious and refreshing coffee experience.

Pison Coffee

Location: Petitenget St No.19A, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Badung Regency, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Pison Coffee is a must-visit spot for coffee enthusiasts in Bali. Known for its specialty coffee and unique Asian-Western fusion menu that combines the best of Indonesia and Sydney, Pison serves house-roasted beans from Sumatra.

The menu includes creative and delicious drinks like the Espresso Avocado and classic Affogato.

Live music is played in the evenings, with an exposed brick wall that gives it a stylish atmosphere. The service is friendly, but the owner, Arlini Wibowo, can also share tips on how to brew your perfect cup at home.

However, the café can get very busy, and wait times can be extended. The coffee is authentic, affordable, and robust.

The chocolate chip cookie was nice but nothing extraordinary. The savory food looked delicious and well-presented. Although, if you are looking for something sweet, you might be disappointed.

The Interior’s design is superb and minimalistic, with wooden elements and a great vibe.

When visiting Seminyak, Bali, coffee enthusiasts must stop at The Koop Roaster & Cafe .

The cafe uses fresh, home-roasted beans sourced from local farms in Kintamani, giving it a unique taste that is hard to find elsewhere.

Café’s atmosphere makes for easy conversation with friends.

Skilled baristas handcraft a unique blend of coffee in a semi-automatic roaster. The menu offers a variety of brewing methods, such as paper drip, flannel drip, Aeropress, and cold press.

The food is also homemade and delicious, with options like baked eggs, avocado smash, and warm and moist banana bread.

Although it can get a little busy sometimes, the delicious coffee and food are worth the wait.

The cozy atmosphere, complete with sunshine streaming through the windows, made for the perfect setting to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee in this cafe.

Djournal Coffee prides itself on using Indonesian-origin beans to create a variety of artisan brews, including espresso-based coffees, pour-over, siphon, and even cold drip.

I particularly appreciated the coffee shop’s fantastic view of an emerald green rice paddy.

There are many other options for those not looking for caffeine, such as the cold Nutella Blast or the Green Tea Freeze, which pairs well with the famous Eggs Benedict Batavia.

With its calm atmosphere, beachy decor, and water views, this coffee spot was the perfect place to relax.

The shop had a great selection of surf-inspired clothing and an extensive library of hand-selected books, artwork, surfboards, and memorabilia to admire while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.

Drifter Surf Shop & Cafe serves fresh, delicious food and drinks, including poke bowls, bumi bowls, tacos, and freshly ground coffee made from the finest Mandaling Estate coffee beans from Sumatra, famous for their unique flavor thanks to the volcanic soil in which they were grown.

If you’re looking for a peaceful and friendly spot to enjoy a great cup of coffee in Ubud, Bali, then FREAK Coffee is worth a visit.

The small size of the cafe and limited seating may be a downside for some, but sitting outside and watching the world go by makes up for it.

They also offer a unique experience with a ceremony coffee for $5.31.

The coffee at FREAK is genuinely exceptional. The cafe owner grows the coffee in Kintamani using organic methods passed down from his family for many generations.
