20 Places to Travel in Your 20s

Whether you're trying to find yourself or just experiencing a healthy dose of wanderlust, get inspired by some of the best places to travel in your 20s.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Your 20s are for rich dishes, late nights, and lazy, hazy mornings after. Sure, you could do all of this in the city or town you’ve chosen to spend your early adulthood. Or , you could do it on the beach in Tel Aviv.

There’s nothing like traveling in your 20s. You’ve got a good amount of freedom and flexibility in your schedule, and (hopefully) the financial support of your first “real world” job. And as someone who’s stepping out into the world for the first time, you probably need a good point in the right direction.

Here, we've compiled a list of trips that every 20-something should consider taking, from the eye-rollingly obvious to the off-the-beaten-path obscure. We based our selections on factors of safety and accessibility, as well as on personal experiences and input from well-seasoned travelers. Some of these destinations are better suited for slow travel over the course of weeks or even months — they're best experienced in between life phases, jobs, or semesters of college — while others can be conquered in a long weekend.

Consider this your new travel mood board. We’re taking you from New Zealand for skydiving to Peru for its cevicherias to Goa for all the spicy foods. This list is a source of wanderlust that may spark your curiosity about a part of the world you've never considered before.

From street tacos in Mexico City to volcanic springs in Iceland to classic cocktails in Louisiana, these experiences are perfect for any 20-something’s next trip.

Go Backpacking in Southeast Asia

From Thailand to the Philippines , Southeast Asia has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. And one of the best ways to see these sights is on your own two feet. Southeast Asia is incredibly welcoming, particularly for young backpackers.

Activities here are plentiful, from breathtaking volcano hikes in Bali to world-class scuba diving in Malaysia . Explore small villages like Pai, Thailand, or crazy, sprawling cities such as Bangkok — and almost everything in between. Make time for dragon boat rides in Vietnam, temples in Cambodia, and an awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site in Myanmar (the ancient city of Bagan).

For English speakers, the language barrier is better than in other common backpacker circuits like South America or even Western Europe. And while flights to and from may be on the pricier side, once you arrive, you can live like a king for a fraction of the cost of a single night out in New York City. It’s also easy to country-hop on budget airlines for shockingly low fares.

Drink the Original Cocktail in New Orleans

Denny Culbert

Legal drinkers, here's a place that appreciates your newfound pastime as much as you do.

For a city with international appeal without having to renew your passport , head down to the Big Easy for culture, cocktails, and Cajun cuisine. Laissez les bons temps rouler in the city known as the birthplace of the first cocktail (the Sazerac, if you don’t know — you can order one at the Carousel Bar  in Hotel Monteleone). You'll certainly have your fill of hurricanes, French 75s, Ramos Gin Fizzes, vieux carrés, Pimm's Cups, brandy milk punches, and daiquiris (did we mention the city is known for its mixed drinks?).

Bar hop on Bourbon Street before a late-night, live jazz session at Preservation Hall , then recover with coffee and beignets at Café Du Monde the next day. Even beyond parades and Mardi Gras, New Orleans ’ laidback energy and out-of-this-world food mean it’s a good time all year long .

Explore Tokyo's Many Neighborhoods

yongyuan/Getty Images

Tokyo could be called the city with 1,000 faces because, in addition to being the most populated city in the world, it’s an eclectic blend of past, present, and future with a variety of unique neighborhoods. Spend the day sampling ramen and touring ancient temples before bellying up to a bar for genuine Japanese whisky and Michelin-starred cuisine.

The extensive train system makes Tokyo easy to navigate (as long as you don’t get lost — Google Maps is a necessity for any first-time tourists!), and you’ll want to take advantage when exploring the city’s various neighborhoods, like Shibuya and Shinjuku. Eat your way through the sushi and seafood in Tsukiji Market , or head to the Land of the Rising Sun in the springtime to experience the famous cherry blossom trees in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Eat Your Heart Out in Mexico City

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

Come for the gorgeous weather and stunning architecture, stay for the tacos al pastor. Mexico City  is one of the most walkable, culturally stimulating, and refreshingly cosmopolitan cities in the world. And it’s a foodie’s dream, with cheap, delicious street food options around every corner. Think tamales, elotes, chicharrónes, churros, agua frescas, and, obviously, tacos, tacos, tacos. Maybe you're even daring enough for chapulines: the Mexican delicacy of roasted grasshoppers seasoned in chili powder and lime.

The city is also home to attractions like the Frida Kahlo Museum and the giant city park, Bosque de Chapultepec. Either the Condesa, Roma Norte, or Polanco neighborhoods make a great home base for your stay. There’s a lively nightlife scene spread throughout Mexico City, as well as tequila and mezcal tastings that easily count as “cultural exploration.”

Take a Food Tour in Peru

Getting a selfie at Macchu Pichu isn’t the only reason to head to Peru . Peruvian cuisine is known throughout the world as some of the best — and healthiest — on the planet.

You haven't tasted ceviche until you’ve been to one (or more) of Lima ’s cevicherias. Whether you embark on an organized food tour or simply hop from hole-in-the-wall joint to five-star restaurant, it’s hard to go wrong with any meal choice. And it’s not just fresh fish: Even self-declared carnivores will find the quinoa in this country delectable.

Tango in Buenos Aires

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Buenos Aires is a 20-something's paradise — and not just because of the astonishing selection of affordable Malbecs. Neighborhood hopping around Buenos Aires, from Palermo Soho to Recoleta to downtown, is an ideal way to explore the city’s multifaceted offerings.

Go on a street art tour. Visit the San Telmo market. Buy yourself a mate gourd, learn how to drink the traditional tea properly, and hang out in the park to people watch. Eat dinner at 10 p.m. like a true Argentinian, and then stay out on the town dancing until sunrise on a Saturday. Or a Tuesday.

If you can swing it, take a flight down to Patagonia and gape in slack-jawed wonder at some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world.

Get Sporty in New Zealand

New Zealand isn’t the easiest or cheapest destination to reach, but it’s an adrenaline enthusiast's dream. Both Auckland and Queenstown have emerged as a popular travel destinations for young people.

Whatever your thrill-seeking heart desires, New Zealand offers it bigger and better than most: Bungee jumping, sky diving, sea kayaking, or wildlife hikes are only a few of the adventurous activities available in the land of the Kiwis.

And not to mention, New Zealand is almost painfully beautiful. It has everything from mountains to rainforests to tropical beaches. We’re talking about a part of the world where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed, so you know the scenery is eye-poppingly epic at pretty much every turn.

Explore Israel on Your Own Two Feet

Roman Krykh / EyeEm/Getty Images

Whether you’re winding through the old streets of Jaffa, soaking up the lively culture of Tel Aviv, or floating in the Dead Sea, Israel provides an experience like no other. The entirety of Israel is approximately the size of New Jersey, which makes it easy to explore from top to bottom.

To the north, luscious waterfalls cascade through a verdant landscape. In the South, huge craters in the desert give off the appearance of an otherworldly planet. Here, camping and stargazing are prime summertime activities. There’s also an extensive  hiking trail  that spans the entire country, which may appeal to the more adventurous traveler.

Get Away From the Crowds in Portugal

The capital city of Lisbon looks exactly like what you imagine when you think of quintessential romantic European getaways: narrow cobbled streets, stunning architecture, and fresh, authentic cuisine that holds true to its cultural roots. Although the city has no shortage of charms to capture your attention, travelers in the know won’t regret renting a car and heading out of town to explore the less-frequented parts of Portugal .

The northern region of the country is an unexpected delight and an ideal location for outdoorsy activities. Porto, famous for port wine, is easily worth a visit, and to the southwest, beaches and national parks provide optimal sunset-watching opportunities. Backpackers will find the party in Lagos, while couples seeking quieter surroundings will find the region just outside of Lagos dotted with romantic bed-and-breakfasts.

The Madeira Islands are another hidden gem in the Atlantic full of gorgeous beaches, cable cars, and (what else?) flowing Madeira wine.

Ride a Bike Through Amsterdam

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Sure, Amsterdam has a bit of a reputation to uphold, but there’s more to this city than its famous coffee shops.

First and foremost, Amsterdam seems to contain more bikes per square meter than it does people. It’s one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and exploring via two wheels opens up a world of possibilities for tourists. There’s art, culture, food, and music galore, and a quick conversation with a local will point you in the direction of a spot to hang for whatever floats your boat.

In the warmer months, travelers will want to visit the beautiful parks smattered throughout the massive city, including Vondelpark , the largest and arguably most famous park in all the Netherlands.

Navigate the Colorful Sites of Morocco

Morocco  is a once-in-a-lifetime destination with sweeping, cinematic sights, delicious cuisine, and an energy all its own. If there’s one word for this country, it’s vibrant: vibrant culture, vibrant flavors, vibrant markets. Marrakech is a sensory smorgasbord you'll never forget, alive with unfamiliar, enticing aromas, and visual splendor. Hit the beach in Agadir, explore the Sahara, wind through markets in Marrakech, dine on couscous at Casablanca restaurants, and head to the oyster capital of Oualidia on the coast.

Go Lion Spotting on the Savanna in Africa

On the costlier end of experiences on this list, African safaris are nevertheless well worth the price tag. A tableaux of natural beauty and menageries of wildlife abound in this part of the planet. In Botswana , you’re likely to get up close and personal with lions. In Kenya , the diverse landscape of the savanna is like something out of a childhood storybook. In Rwanda, trek among gorillas and get an unparalleled peek into the majestic world of these awe-inspiring, intelligent creatures.

In addition to costing a pretty penny, these safaris tend to be a minimum of five to seven days, so they’ll require more of a time commitment than something planned on a whim. And it goes without saying, this is one excursion you’ll definitely want to book with a reliable, trustworthy tour company .

Get Spicy in Goa

India can be overwhelming, particularly for young travelers in their 20s, but Goa, on the western coast along the Arabian Sea, is a solid place to start. The cuisine is resplendent in local flavors like chili, clove, cinnamon, and cardamom, as well as coconuts, pineapples, and mangoes.

Whether you’re eating your way through the hip local food scene or relaxing on palm-lined beaches or bird-watching in the Western Ghats, you’re guaranteed a tranquil, meaningful trip. There’s a wide range of accommodations in Goa — anything from cheap backpacking hangouts to luxury villas — so whatever your tastes may be, it’s likely you’ll find somewhere to hang your hat.

Take a Road Trip on the Best Coast

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

There's nothing more classically American than traveling with the top down and the sun in your eyes. And there’s no better drive than the Pacific Coast Highway . California is rife with scenic routes — be it San Francisco to L.A. or a trip through wine country.

Take Highway 1 through Carmel-by-the-Sea and  Big Sur for some of the most beautiful sights in the country, or hit the beach in Malibu. Or, opt for a wine country romp through Napa Valley . Of course, there are plenty of lodging options along the way — be it breathtaking campsites or luxury hotels, but if you’re headed toward Palm Springs, spend a night or two in Joshua Tree National Park for a true West Coast experience.

Hop Around Eastern Europe

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

Eastern Europe is often stereotyped as Western Europe’s less hip sibling, but it’s home to some of the most culturally interesting and architecturally compelling cities in the world. Not to mention that the cost of living (and visiting) is generally lower than in London or Paris.

Prague and Budapest are prime hot spots for college students and young people, particularly in the summer months. Thousands of hostels, bars, clubs, and cafes run the gamut from dive-y to luxury. (Note: The Czech Republic consumes more beer per capita than any other nation in the world, which means that beer is frequently cheaper than water.)

A few other cities to hit on this circuit include Belgrade, Serbia; Bucharest, Romania; and, Varna, Bulgaria . And the cities are really only about a third of the real attraction: Venture into the countryside for scenery that feels like stills from Planet Earth .

Get Festive in Germany

With fairytale forests and elaborate celebrations, Germany is one for the books. Rent a car and wind through the forests , countryside, and national parks to see the mythic German landscape and its storybook castles (just be wary of any witches you may meet on the way). Go clubbing in Berlin , or take a train to some of the country’s small towns for medieval history, beer steins, and half-timbered houses.

Speaking of beer steins, of course you'll want to head to Munich for an authentic Oktoberfest celebration in the fall — just make sure you plan ahead, as flight prices skyrocket, the cost of traditional accommodations can be astronomical, and Airbnb hosts are notoriously picky about their tenants. Or, consider visiting in the wintertime for a classic Christkindl market experience.

Explore Nature in Slovenia

For nature lovers , Slovenia is a country of boundless treasures. From mountain biking to camping on beautiful Lake Bohinj to summiting the daunting Mount Triglav, adventure sport opportunities are around every turn in this quiet corner of the planet. (A word of warning: Beware of the local Slovenians’ definition of the phrase “beginner-level hike.”)

Driving through the countryside is a slightly more serene way to spend a few days exploring the outskirts of Ljubljana, the capital and largest city in Slovenia . The Dragon City, as its sometimes referred to, is a quaint European tourist destination that has perfected the art of riverside patio dining.

Though not exactly a party destination, Slovenia in general is an idyllic setting for a reset or for getting in some quality time with Mother Earth. English is reasonably prevalent in Ljubljana, and locals are quite amiable, but outside of the city prepare to rely on Google Translate to converse with village dwellers.

Jump Around the Greek Islands

Tryfon N. Georgopoulos/Courtesy of Red Savannah

Their whitewashed walls and turquoise waters make the Greek Isles feel like stepping into a postcard. There are actually six main archipelagoes to explore, and most people choose to spend their time island hopping within a particular group, made easy with local ferry operators.

You’ll want to consider the Cyclades, where you’ll get the classic Greek experience (think blue roofs, bougainvillea, and party beaches) in Mykonos and Santorini. There are also the tony hotels on Crete (the largest Greek Island) and the cinematic views of the Sporades made famous in “Mamma Mia!” No matter where you end up, there’s plenty of fun to be found. Tour olive groves and vineyards, indulge in fresh Mediterranean meals, gaze out a deep blue caldera, or just relax on the beach, ouzo cocktail in hand.

Dip Into the Hot Springs of Iceland

The Blue Lagoon, black-sand beaches, and the northern lights await in this beautifully austere landscape. Iceland is a mythic destination (literally, for the Vikings) where you’re sure to see natural wonders you won’t find in many other pockets of the world.

Head here sometime between September and March for peak conditions to see the northern lights (read: darkness — there are only about five hours of daylight this time of year). Whereas in the summer months, the sun sets for only three hours and you’ll find better sightseeing weather if you want to tour the glacial lagoons and volcanic islands that make this the "Land of Fire and Ice.”

Reykjavik makes a great home base and gives you a taste of the local culture (literally, if you slide into a table at one of the city’s many delectable restaurants). Of course, you can also stay directly at the Blue Lagoon (or many of the country’s other hot springs ) or hunker down in a prime northern lights viewing destination .

Camp at the Grand Canyon

Make the ultimate southwestern pilgrimage to one of America’s most famous national parks for the views and camping of a lifetime. Featuring the gorgeous red rocks that make Arizona famous, the canyon runs for 278 miles with plenty of opportunities for backcountry hiking, stargazing, and whitewater trips down the Colorado River.

Hiking in Grand Canyon National Park takes a good amount of preparation (this is the desert, after all, with plenty of steep cliffs and drop-offs), but the payoff will be well worth it once you’re gazing out at one of the Hermit Road scenic overlooks. Whether you decide to tackle the more accessible South Rim or the less-crowded North Rim, you’ll be rewarded with world-class views and bragging-worthy campsites . If you prefer a less rugged experience, however, Under Canvas does have a Grand Canyon location where you’ll sleep soundly in your safari-inspired glamping tent just 40 minutes from the Grand Canyon Village.

19. Barcelona, Spain

18. Mykonos, Greece

Along with Santorini, Mykonos has become an absolute must visit for twenty-something travellers in search of the iconic Greek islands. Known for its lively nightlife and late sunsets, Mykonos is a great choice for the more party-centric traveller looking to meet and socialise with travellers from all over the world.

Solo Travel in Europe | WOW

17. Paris, France

Paris holds so many memories for me in my 20’s. The city of Paris is perfect if you’re a lover of art history, great food and even better wine. There are endless neighbourhoods to explore so be sure to allow yourself at least a few nights for your first visit. Arguably you could stay a whole month and still only scratch the surface!

16. Morocco

Morocco is just a short flight from Europe and a great introduction to Northern Africa with so much culture to discover, great food to indulge in and a sensory overload to say the least.

15. New Zealand

If road trips and outdoors adventures are more your style, look no further than an active escape in New Zealand. Winter in New Zealand is a great chance to travel off season and enjoy fewer crowds. If you’ve got time on your side you can even rent a van to explore the wild side of New Zealand .

Travelling to India is high on the list for many travellers on a journey of self-discovery and for good reason. Despite the crowds and chaos, in so many ways India is home to zen, balanced way of life and finding the meaning to it. As far as the best 20 places to see in your 20s go, India is an unforgettable trip.

Petra Jordan | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

13. Petra, Jordan

Petra has become one of Instagram’s biggest victims in the past few years but if you can see past the crowds (hot tip: arrive early) and appreciate the centuries old history of Petra, then it should very much be on the top of your bucket list!

Williamsburg Hotel New York | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

12. New York City, New York, USA

It’s an oldie but a goodie – New York, New York. You should definitely try and make it here in your 20s and soak up the underground bars and clubs, bustling streets above ground, and the peaceful oasis that is central park. It’s a concrete jungle, sure… but it’s where dreams are made of – right Jay Z?

11. Lapland, Finland

If you haven’t seen photos of the northern lights – one of the world’s most astounding natural beauties – then be sure to throw the term ‘Lapland Finland northern lights’ into Google. Lapland is a great place to base yourself for some serious star gazing in the winter months. Expect to be sitting in permanent darkness without a clue as to the time, but its an unrivalled experience you won’t get elsewhere.

10. Death Valley, USA

Okay, so there’s not much there….. and people that have been will probably tell you not to go (probably being the key word here). But it’s a great place to visit if you’re doing the Coast to Coast roadtrip or on your way through to Vegas for Los Angeles.

9. Patagonia

This one’s much more of a challenge to get to and probably one to keep on the dreamlist rather than the bucketlist – but nonetheless, we couldn’t not include PATAGONIA!

Scandinavian countries are sometime viewed as a distant dream to 20-somethings visiting Europe. But if you’re looking for something slightly (as in a lot) more fulfilling than the usual booze cruise bus that darts its way from one central European country to the next, then check out the likes of Norway, Sweden, and even Denmark. These countries are culturally rich, and a complete different experience to anywhere else in Europe. Here we have a quaint seaside town in Norway named ‘Bodo’…

7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

South America isn’t quite as popular among 20-somethings as the likes of Europe or the USA – but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be! So if you’re going to go, why not go all out!!!!

6. Cappadocia, Turkey

You’ve seen the photos on social media but until you’re flying high in an air-filled balloon over the rolling hills below, you’ll never know the feeling of complete and utter wanderlust at Cappadocia!

5. The Inca Trail, Peru

Another highly celebrated image on social media is the Inca Trail in Peru. For active travelers this is the perfect opening into altitude treks and is a great bucketlist destination to hit up in your 20’s.

4. Salt Flats, Bolivia

Bolivia’s salt flats are some of the most sought after in the world. Be sure to start your adventure in the Bolivian capital La Paz and if you dare, ride a bike down the infamous Death Road.

Another great adventure to be had is to buy a van or motorhome, kit it out and make your way across the country of Canada from East to West or vice versa.

2. Disneyland, Orlando, Florida

You’re probably thinking ‘uh…what?’, but let’s think about this for a moment – it’s better late than never, and if you ask me, growing up is overrated anyway. This is one of my MUST SEE destinations before I climb my way into the 30’s, and it should surely be on your list too.

1. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Rounding up our top 20 places to see in your 20s is a personal favourite of mine. A hidden gem in central Europe that completely blew me away by the name of Cesky Krumlov. It’s just a short 2-hour bus ride into southern Bohemia from Prague, and would have to be one of my favourite finds in Europe. If you can help it, try and visit during the summer for rafting down the Vltava river with various camping spots along the way.

Wow! These are all amazing places to visit! I only visited some of them before. I would love to go to Spain when I have time. Thanks for sharing!

A few snapshots from Island life in Koh Samui 🥹🌴 just shared my blog posts from this trip in Thailand and now craving mango sticky rice pudding, the kindness and hospitality of Thai people and those buffet breakfast spreads (the kinda ones that keep you full til dinner). My stay at @fskohsamui was like something out of a story book. Especially that last photo - that night was one to remember 🫶🏼 #kohsamui #thailand #travel #travelblog #thailandtravel

20 places to travel in your 20s

best places for 20 somethings to travel

By Dan Saltzstein

  • Oct. 20, 2016

This article is part of a series aimed at helping you navigate life’s opportunities and challenges. What else should we write about? Contact us: [email protected].

There’s no better way to change your perception of the world — and maybe yourself — than travel. You’ll experience different cultures, meet new friends and make lifelong memories. But traveling in your 20s poses challenges: You might have financial constraints, limited time off from work and concerns about safety. So think of this selection of 20 places less as a checklist and more as a starter kit to world travel. (We’ve left out the obvious classic cities: New York, Paris, London. They are, of course, great places to visit, too.)

1. A national park. They represent so much of what’s great about the United States — beauty, diversity of landscape, freedom. But which one to visit? There’s Acadia in Maine, the Badlands in South Dakota, Joshua Tree in California and 55 others. Pluses for young travelers: Camping (or park cabins) will help save on lodging; they are equally suited to solo travelers and groups; and they are endlessly Instagram-friendly. (Also consider Canada’s national parks, which will offer free admission for all of 2017, the country’s 150th birthday.)

2. Prague. Sure, it’s a bit of an after-college travel cliché, but Prague is still a great spot for backpackers — full of charm, great beer and energy. And the food has gotten a lot better . Visit the beautiful city center, but stay in Vinohrady or Zizkov, which are full of young Praguers and expats.

3. Oaxaca, Mexico. One of the world’s great gastronomic destinations, Oaxaca is also cheap, friendly and safe. Start in Oaxaca City (eat and drink your way through the sprawling markets and mezcalerias), and then take a very short flight or longer minibus ride down to the coast for surfing, swimming and whale-watching.

4. Cuba. It’s a lot easier to get to than it used to be, and still pulses with youthful energy. Start in Havana , but getting around the country will give you a real sense of the culture — perhaps before it starts its post-embargo transformation.

5. Amsterdam. Yes, there are plenty of places to get high. But even without the decriminalized marijuana, Amsterdam would be one of the most charming places on earth : gorgeous (those canals), friendly (with plenty of English speakers), easy to get around (especially on a cheap rental bike), incredibly diverse (because of the Dutch colonial past). The famous/infamous hostels can be fine, though more appealing lodging sits outside the city center, in neighborhoods like De Pijp and Westerpark .

6. Patagonia, Argentina. It feels like the ends of the earth and basically is, but you’ll be glad you took the flight or (very scenic) train ride from Buenos Aires. Stunningly beautiful, it’s home to lakes, skiing, plentiful wildlife and some of the world’s healthiest and most accessible glaciers .

7. New Orleans. This city is the closest you’ll get to an overseas experience in the continental United States. It’s a world unto itself, full of history, character and friendly folks. The food and drink scene is unlike anywhere else: po’boys, gumbo, beignets, Sazeracs. Skip Bourbon Street’s debaucherous chaos in favor of live music at the clubs on Frenchmen Street. Music festival lovers should also consider going in late April for Jazz Fest.

8. Berlin. There are few cities as welcoming for young people as Berlin — affordable, vibrant and friendly , with plenty of English speakers. Fans of contemporary art and beer will be especially pleased. Try Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg as home bases. (The city is also a great hub for getting around Europe, especially with today’s cheap European carriers.)

9. Montreal. Like New Orleans, it’s a taste of Europe without leaving North America. The food is spectacular (go early for the smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz’s), and summertime means easy biking and overflowing markets. If you have a few days to get out of town, the rest of Quebec is gorgeous all year long. (Oh, yeah, and the drinking age is 18.)

10. Vietnam. A trip to Southeast Asia would be tough to squeeze into a week, but if you find yourself with a bit more time, consider Vietnam, a country rich in cuisine , culture and natural beauty — and light on the wallet. Set your sights in particular on the seaside town of Hoi An and Hue, a former national capital. A boat trip through Ha Long Bay is equally memorable.

(Related: The ways to travel on the cheap during or after college )

11. Budapest. It’s come a long way from its Soviet days. Language can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s a welcoming place full of charm and a youthful energy. Take a soak in one of its famous bathhouses and enjoy the city’s laid-back cafe culture.

12. New Zealand. It’s a long (and expensive) flight from the United States, but one with great rewards. Reasonably priced bus tours are easy ways to get around the islands, which offer the stunning, diverse beauty made famous in the “Lord of the Rings” movies.

13. Iceland. Not quite as cheap for Americans as it was after its economy collapsed, Iceland is still a quick flight from the East Coast. Its otherworldly beauty — hot springs , volcanic fields, waterfalls and the famous Blue Lagoon — is best appreciated by getting out of the capital, Reykjavik ; consider booking a tour.

14. Barcelona. Few cities offer such a wealth of dining and night life options as Barcelona. Architecture fans can go on a tour of the wild work of Antoni Gaudí, including the soaring Sagrada Familia. Neighborhoods to explore include medieval Barri Gòtic, seaside Barceloneta and more touristy El Born. It even has great beaches .

15. California coast. A trip up the Pacific Coast Highway requires driving skills and stamina, but you can’t beat the views. Save by camping along the way, in over 20 designated spots .

16. Morocco. Culturally rich, easy to get around and budget-friendly, Morocco is perfect for adventurous young travelers. Start in Casablanca (your flight will probably take you there anyway), but use the extensive train and bus system to get to the Fez (and its dizzying medina), Marrakesh (and the wildly colorful Jardin Majorelle) and the coastal town of Essaouira (and its piers, where you can eat fresh-off-the-boat seafood). If time permits, you can even head by camel into the desert .

17. Costa Rica. A few reasons to visit: Rain forests teeming with wildlife , two coasts peppered with reasonably priced eco-resorts and creative ways to get around (horseback riding and rafting, for example). Flights from the United States tend to be reasonable.

18. A Greek island that’s not Mykonos, Ios or Santorini. The Cyclades — the islands south of Athens — offer unrivaled beauty and relaxation, particularly if you stay away from the party destinations. There’s nothing wrong with them, of course (Santorini is particularly gorgeous), but less-visited islands like Naxos and Folegandros offer fewer tourists and more intact culture. Spend your days swimming, eating amazing grilled seafood and exploring ancient ruins. Evenings are for music, more food and ouzo.

19. Lisbon. Lisbon is an utterly charming city , both youthful and ancient. Neighborhoods to visit include colorful Bairro Alto, Alfama and Intendente . Also consider a side-trip to Sintra , a storybook village nestled in the hills with a castle and not one but two alluring palaces.

20. The Croatian coast. It’s gotten fancier over the years, but bopping down the Adriatic coast in Croatia is still a great option for young travelers. Start in scenic Dubrovnik and hit laid-back and gorgeous spots like Rovinj, Kornati Islands National Park and Makarska. You’ll find great food and wine, dazzling vistas and a welcoming attitude.

best places to travel in your 20s on a budget

Your 20's are an incredible time in your life. You're old enough to be responsible, courageous, and knowledgeable, but young enough to have a sense of freedom and open-mindedness. Traveling is a great way to utilize this prime state of being and explore the world before settling down and starting a career or having a family . But what are the best places to travel in your 20s if you don't have much money?

For most travelers in their 20's, money is a major obstacle for adventure. It's rare for a young person to have substantial amounts of money saved, especially during or right after studying at university. This means luxurious getaways with five-star hotels and first-class flights are often out of the question. But even on a tight budget, you can have a lot of fun in many places around the world.

While seeking out more unique and affordable ways to travel, it helps to start by researching the world's most budget-friendly countries to visit. Luckily, I've compiled a list of some gorgeous countries that are easy to travel while on a budget .

These are the perfect places to travel alone in your 20's , as they are full of culture that is easily accessible without paying for a private tour guide.

And if you opt to do a Worldpackers work exchange , you'll save a lot more money on your trip(s) by cutting the cost of accommodation . In this kind of volunteer program you exchange a few hours of work for free stay, and sometimes you'll even get extra benefits like meals and tours.

It's also an amazing way to get to know interesting people, immerse yourself in local cultures  and put your talents to practice or develop new skills.

If you are in your 20's and are looking for fun vacation spots, any of these countries are sure to offer you an enriching experience.

15 best places to travel in your 20s on a budget

So what are these amazing places to travel in your 20s after all? Here's the list!

1. Thailand

thailand is one of the best places to travel in your 20s

If you're wondering how to travel on a budget in your 20's , it's by going to places like Thailand.

A popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia, Thailand is just as beautiful as the hype suggests. Sparkling Buddhist temples, limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, lush jungles, bustling cities...Thailand is full of diverse landscapes and welcoming locals. It has the appearance and feel of an expensive vacation, but you can easily enjoy the same experience on a budget .

You can cross so many items off your bucket list in Thailand without spending a ton of money . A full day cooking class in Chiang Mai can cost under $30, a boat tour around the islands of Koh Phi Phi can stay under $20, and a ticket to the incredible temples of the Grand Palace in Bangkok costs only $15. All these are pretty cheap for what they're worth .

Even the day-to-day expenses in Thailand are affordable . For example, you can get a full plate of fresh Pad Thai or a giant fruit smoothie at a street market for $1.

If you want to save even more money, get to know local culture in a deeper way and meet other travelers, check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in Thailand .

2. Bulgaria

bulgaria is an underrated european destination

If you're dreaming of visiting Europe but need to travel on a student budget , look no further than Bulgaria.

This eastern European country is often overlooked by tourists, but it is a truly amazing nation with a rich history. You can find a decent hostel in the capital city, Sofia, for only $10-$15 a night, and you'll find that most of the attractions in the city are free .

The lack of tourism in Bulgaria means the locals are thrilled to see tourists and teach them about their culture, so you'll surely be welcomed with open arms here. Sofia offers free walking tours, free graffiti tours, free pub crawls and free food tours where you can dive right into the lifestyle of Bulgaria for barely any money at all.

You can also buy lots of great products that are normally expensive elsewhere in the world. Bulgaria prides itself on its dairy production, as well as its roses and rose infusions. Body lotions and cosmetics are exceptionally cheap here, and they are very high quality made from Bulgarian yogurt and rose extract.

Clothes and food are also cheap in Bulgaria, so you can treat yourself to shopping and nice restaurant meals and save money while traveling .

Check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in Bulgaria !

it's possible to visit peru on a budget

This gem of South America is most famous for its wonder of the ancient world, Machu Picchu. Peru is a rather large country with lots to offer, including the Andes Mountains, Amazon Rainforest, and countless beaches, forests, deserts, and small local villages.

Touristy adventures like hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu can be pricey through nice tour companies, but you can also find treks through local hostel tour companies like Loki Hostel or Milhouse Hostel for much cheaper. For example, you can do the 5-day Salkantay Trey through Loki Hostel for only $249, as opposed to the average $500 is costs to complete the Inca Trail through a popular tour company.

Another great experience to have in Peru is hiking Rainbow Mountain, a stunning natural phenomenon where towering mountain peaks are naturally striped with vibrant colors. Through local tour companies in Cusco, you can join a full day guided hike for only $30.

Transport around the country is also great for budget travelers . Comfortable overnight buses can take you all over the nation for super cheap prices, and in every city or town you can find delicious local food like ceviche, loom saltado and quinoa soup for very little money. Peru is definitely one of the best places to travel in your 20s!

If I were you, I'd spend more than a few days there. Check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in Peru .

best places to travel in your 20s

Visit this vibrant Caribbean island to feel like you've stepped back into the 1950's. With a unique history and a colorful culture full of aromatic Latin food, picturesque architecture and of course, Cuban cigars, there is no shortage of things to do in Cuba .

Luckily, all these things can be enjoyed on a budget . Stay in an Airbnb or in a Casa Particular with a local family for about $20-$30 a night. This is a bit pricier than a hostel dorm room, but the authentic experience with locals is worth the extra cash. You can make up for this by eating street food for $1 per meal and buying cheap cocktails in a bar for $2-$3.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Cuba for free, such as lazing away on pristine beaches like the famous Varadero , the serene Playa Pilar, or the bustling Cayo Coco. You can also wander the archaic streets of Havana, admiring the baroque architecture of Plaza Vieja and studying the Christian art of the city's many cathedrals.

Venture beyond the capital to small towns like Trinidad, where you can take salsa lessons and dance in the streets with locals near Plaza Mayor. Dive into the rich nature of Cuba as well by hiking about two miles through Parque El Cubano, and finishing with a swim in the refreshing Javira Waterfall.

If you want to have a deeper understanding of the country, check out the  Worldpackers work exchange programs in Cuba .

croatia is a great destination for young people

If you want to travel Europe on a budget , you can't miss backpacking Croatia . A comforting mix of eastern European culture and Mediterranean warmth, Croatia is one of my favorite places to travel in your 20s. Some of its more popular cities can be a bit touristy, but they are absolutely still worth the trip.

F or example, Dubrovnik is full of rustic old churches and menacing stone walls, many of which were used for filming Game of Thrones. This is one of the most expensive cities in Croatia, but can still be done on a budget .

If you have a student ID card, you can get a huge discount on climbing the city walls. You can also spend a day hiking and swimming on the nearby Lokrum Island, which is only a 5 Euro ferry-ride from the city pier.

Other beautiful cities in Croatia can easily be done on a budget . Split is a lazy beachside town with a whitewashed Old Town Center and a massive park perfect for running and watching the sunset. The good news is both of these activities are completely free and allow you to explore the beauty and serenity of Split.

Zagreb, the capital city, is packed with magnificent architecture and cathedrals, so all you need to do is wander around with a camera and you can be entertained for days. Be sure to stop by Dolac Market and buy some local produce and homemade goods for incredibly cheap.

Check out  Worldpackes work exchange programs in Croatia  and have the time of your life in this amazing country.

6. Nicaragua

nicaragua is also one of best places to travel in your 20s

This small Central American nation has all the same assets as its neighbor, Costa Rica , but it's much cheaper and much less touristy . If you're wondering what are the best places to travel in your 20s in Central America , you should definitely consider Nicaragua.

Here you can find friendly, laid-back locals eager to interact with you, small historical cities with stunning architecture, and cheap produce markets with fresh tropical fruits for minuscule prices. In addition to affordable food, you can find nice hostels for around $10 a night, making the average cost of living in Nicaragua very low.

Nicaragua is a great destination for surfers of all levels, as the waves are pumping and the beaches are usually close to empty. There is a lake in Managua in the center of the country that causes the wind to blow offshore towards the coast, which makes for perfect, glassy waves year round.

Beginner surfers can learn how to ride the waves at beaches like Playa Maderas, while experienced surfers can hunt down the big waves in places like Popoya.

You can also thrill-seek by hiking active volcanoes and sand-boarding back down , or indulge in some crazy parties on Sunday Funday in San Juan Del Sur.

Excited about exploring this surprising country? Check out  Worldpackers work exchange programs in Nicaragua !

7. South Africa

you'll love travel around south africa in your 20s

South Africa is the perfect country for experiencing lots of life-changing moments in one trip . Visit Kruger National Park for a thrilling safari and spot lions, elephants, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and more in their natural habitat.

A luxury guided safari is pricey, but you can purchase a self-drive safari for only $100 a night; this can drop down to as low as $60 a night if you camp. Witness more natural beauty at the tabletop mountains of Drakensberg Park, which lies on the border of South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Explore more jaw-dropping peaks at Table Mountain in Cape Town, one of the most popular cities in South Africa. You can hike Table Mountain for free, and there are numerous trails with varying levels of difficulty.

Another free attraction in Cape Town is Green Point Park, the same spot where the FIFA World Cup was held in 2010. Scope out the architecture in Greenmarket Square or the neighborhood of Bo-Kaap, or learn to surf at Muizenberg.

Cape Town is such a welcoming city that you barely need to spend any money to enjoy it , except for food and accommodation.

To save money on food, visit the V&A Market for super cheap vegan and vegetarian meals, and to save money on accommodation , make sure   to check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in South Africa .

best places to travel in your 20s

The amount of natural diversity in Ecuador is jaw-dropping considering its size. Named after its location along the Equator in South America, Ecuador's warm climate extends from the jungles and waterfalls of the Amazon, to the cloud forests of the north, to the beaches of the western coastline.

You can also find colder weather as you head to higher altitudes, such as the capital city of Quito or the famous volcanoes of Cotopaxi National Park.

Ecuador is the perfect country for adventure enthusiasts who love to be outdoors, as the natural beauty is truly endless. Luckily, most of the country is budget-friendly , with the exception of maybe the Galapagos Islands, making it one of the best places to travel in your 20s in South America.

The American Dollar is used as the local currency here, though it's recommended to come with smaller bills and some coins as well. A local bus ride in Quito costs $0.20, and buses to different cities throughout the country usually cost between $5-$10. You probably won't be able to pay for anything using a $20 or higher, and it's rare for locals to have change.

If you're looking for a different experience there, see the  Worldpackers work exchange programs in Ecuador .

9. Cambodia

cambodia is one of the best budget travel destinations in the world

Many travelers visit Cambodia to explore the ancient temples of Siem Reap, and with good reason. You can spend up to seven days roaming through the massive stone structures that date back to the 12th Century, watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat and witnessing the giant faces at the Bayon.

Stay in a hostel in Siem Reap while you plan your stay; some hostels are as cheap as $4 a night and the staff will help you plan your visit to the temples.

The prices for the temples passes are currently $37 for one day, $62 for three days, and $72 for seven days, which is very reasonable considering tourism is one of Cambodia's main sources of income . Without these famous temples, the country would probably fall deeper into poverty.

So it's absolutely worth traveling to Cambodia and giving a bit of money towards the local economy , as long as you respect their culture. Always wear appropriate clothing in the temples and be kind to the locals.

Give the Cambodians an extra warm thank you when they drive you around in a tuk tuk, serve you their delicious khmer curry in a cafe or sell you discounted clothing in the street market, and remember to appreciate how lucky you are to be able to see their country.

Feel like delving deeper into Cambodian culture? Check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in Cambodia .

10. Romania

best places to travel in your 20s

Some people believe the land known as Transylvania is a myth, but it's actually a large region in the eastern European country of Romania. It's incredibly cheap to visit and easy to travel through Romania , and you'll be able to see some adorable little villages and impressive castles along the way.

Some of the most popular towns aIong the Transylvanian route are Brasov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, and Sighisoara. Common factors among all these towns are brightly painted houses, visually pleasing public squares, and cheap food. Delicious pastries and bread rolls from a local bakery cost about $0.20, and you can get hearty meals in a restaurant for about $5 .

The easiest way to travel through Romania is by train. The train network connects all the towns of Transylvania with major Romanian cities, and the journeys usually cost around $10-$20.

A must-see in Romania is Peles Castle, a massive, ornate palace that stands tall in the middle of the thick forest. The easiest way to reach the castle is by taking a quick train from Brasov to the town of Sinaia for the day.

travel to turkey and visit the amazing capadocia

Caught between the Mediterranean's intoxicating beauty and the pull of a rich Islamic culture, Turkey represents a wonderfully diverse nation .

While the debate over whether Turkey is European or Middle-Eastern has not been settled, the affordability of this country remains constant. Turkey  is undoubtedly one of the best places to travel in your 20s (or at any age) on a budget.

One of the highlights of this country is being able to enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine , like stuffed vine leaves, warm eggplant dishes with yogurt sauce, sugary baklava and Turkish delight, savory Gozleme, and tasty Doner kebabs.

Finding these foods on the street will only cost you a couple dollars , whereas eating a massive meal in a restaurant will still cost you only about $5.

Aside from filling up on food, spend your time in Turkey visiting the unique attractions scattered around the countryside. In Istanbul, you can enter the famed Blue Mosque for free , as well as roam the seemingly endless stalls of the Grand Bazaar.

Many tourists also love to visit Cappadocia to witness the crazy, sloping and jagged rocky landscape and watch the hot air balloons drift overhead. While paying for your own hot air balloon ride can be expensive (over $100), you can watch them in action from Sunset Point in Red Valley.

Turkey is one of our top chosen destinations for an overseas adventure travel .

Check out  Worldpackers work exchange programs in Turkey !

12. Bolivia

bolivia is extremely cheap, what makes it one of the best places to travel in your 20s

To find authentic South American culture and unbelievable natural scenery , visit the mysterious country of Bolivia. Not only is everything extremely cheap here, such as food, accommodation and Spanish schools, but the intense local traditions and practically untouched ancient culture makes this country an unforgettable experience .

Visit La Paz, the highest city in the world, to find some interesting witchcraft stores and beautiful handmade accessories from the local farmers. You can also trek to small villages to visit the Quechuan tribes , where people still speak their ancient languages and don't even know Spanish.

After experiencing the way of life of the Bolivian locals , venture into breathtaking nature. Definitely visit Salar De Uyuni, the famous salt flats where you can sleep in houses made of salt and watch pink flamingoes bask in a massive blue lagoon.

Also test your adrenaline limits by mountain biking along the winding path in the mountains known as Death Road. Supposedly the most dangerous road in the world, you can ride from high altitudes with freezing temperatures down into tropical coffee plantations without having to pedal once.

Want to explore this amazing country on a slower pace? Check out Worldpackers work exchange programs in Bolivia  and spend some time there living like a local.

13. Czech Republic

the czech republic is another amazing budget travel destination in europe

Located smack in the middle of Europe, the Czech Republic is a much more affordable destination than its neighbors , Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

You can find similar traits in all these countries, like interesting historical monuments, lush forests, green countrysides, hearty meat dishes and delicious beer, but pretty much everything is cheaper in the Czech Republic. In most pubs, beer is even cheaper than water, so it's a great country for indulging.

While exploring the Czech Republic be sure to visit Prague. It's one of the most magical cities in Europe, and the partying scene makes it one of the best places to travel in your 20s.

The presence of castles, chiming clock towers and cobblestone streets make the city look and feel like a village from a fairytale , especially at Christmas time when the streets fill with markets selling hot mulled wine and the tall pastries known as Trdelniks.

You can meet many interesting people and have lots of fun in Prague and other cities while doing a  Worldpackers work exchange program in the Czech Republic .

best places to travel in your 20s

Mexico provides travelers with a strong sense of Latin culture that reaches beyond the stereotypes. This country  is more than just tequila and tacos on Cinco De Mayo, it's full of dense jungles and amazing surf breaks and flavorful street food.

There are some great hotspots in Mexico to visit while traveling on a budget , such as Mexico City for magnificent architecture and handmade tacos in the street, or Oaxaca for markets selling colorful trinkets and day trips to ancient Aztec Ruins.

You can also take a bus from Mexico City to visit the incredible pyramids of Teotihuacan, where the entrance fee is less than $4.

To enjoy Mexico's beautiful beaches for free , venture to the massive coastline. Puerto Escondido offers great waves for learning how to surf and a very fun nightlife, and Loreto on the Baja Peninsula has lots of marine wildlife to enjoy while swimming or surfing. Loreto is also home to historical cave paintings located in the Sierra De La Giganta Mountain Range.

Don't forget you can enjoy all that without paying for accommodation! Check out  Worldpackers work exchange programs in Mexico .

laos is another great place to visit in your 20s

This small nation in Southeast Asia is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. You can trek, kayak, and explore to your heart's content without spending too much money, which makes it one of the highlights of this list of best places to travel in your 20s.

Hostels in Laos can cost as little as $5 a night, whereas full meals from street food stalls can cost as little as $2 . Purchasing a guided tour like zip-lining through the forest costs around $30, so to really save money it's better to hike and explore on your own without a guide.

Some amazing destinations to hike to in Laos include the stunning Kuang Si Falls, which is easily accessible from Luang Prabang, and the unique, remote Katang Villages of Dong Phu Vieng National Protected Area.

You can also try kayaking through the peaceful archipelago of islands known as Si Phan Don , or learn how to rock climb at the limestone cliffs of Tha Khaek. The adventures in Laos are truly endless, and luckily most of the thrills here can be enjoyed on a budget.

Travel in your 20s: 15 trips to take before you hit 30

Want to travel in your 20s but not sure where to start? Here are 15 different trips to add to your travel bucket list to tick off during this decade.

A heck of a lot happens in your 20s. From college experiences to long-term loves to fresh careers to first homes, your 20s are a decade packed with growth and change.

And while it can be tempting to rush to the traditional goal posts that society sets for us, like marriage, mortgage and babies, it’s also really important to realise that for most of us, this is the time in our lives that we have the best balance of minimal responsibilities and maximum freedom. And that’s something to take advantage of!

petra treasury

Everyone’s situation is different and not everyone will have the same access or ability to travel in their 20s, but travel doesn’t have to mean flying thousands of kilometres away from home and maxing out our credit card. Even a budget holiday or local adventure can do wonders for getting us out of our comfort zones, opening our eyes to other ways of life and building our self-confidence.

Whether you’re heading into your 20s, on your way out of the decade, or you’re already past it and want to give the decade another go just for fun, here are 15 bucket list ways to travel in your 20s.

Disclaimer before anyone comes at me in the comments: You CAN travel after your 20s. As I type this I’m planning my second multi-year round the world adventure which I hope will take me into my early to mid-30s. Travel doesn’t have an age limit, these trips are just suggestions for where young travellers in their 20s could start if they’re just kicking off their travel life.

A girls’ trip (or lads’ trip!)

A week or weekend away with your best girlfriends is an essential trip in your 20s. There’s nothing quite like spending a day exploring an unknown city with your besties, ordering a table full of local dishes to share between your group, then making your way through the cocktail menu while dancing up a storm to 90s bangers. Ah, the dream.

Some of my all-time favourite destinations for a girls’ trip are Mykonos in Greece, New York City, Turkey, and Bali in Indonesia.

A solo trip

I’m obsessed with solo travel ( can’t you tell? ) so I’m a bit biased here, but I firmly believe that everyone needs to travel solo at least once in their lives, and what better time to do it than in your 20s?

Solo travel is good for the soul, and it can have an incredibly positive impact on everything from your mindset to your resilience to your self-assurance. You’re forced to rely on yourself rather than on the people around you, you get to do what you want when you want without anyone getting in the way of your plans, and chances are you’ll meet far more people and make more friends than if you were travelling with people you already knew.

If a solo trip abroad seems way too crazy for you, start by taking an overnight trip away from home and slowly work your way up to something bigger.

My top suggestions for your first solo trip are Australia, the UK, Thailand, and Canada.

A romantic getaway

Slightly off-brand for me since I am not romantic whatsoever, but taking a trip with your partner is a great way to travel in your 20s. Whether you’re looking for a fly ‘n’ flop island holiday or an active adventure that pushes you both to your limits, travelling with someone you love is always one for the memory books.

As an added bonus, travelling as a couple is a brilliant way of testing your relationship’s ability to handle a bit of pressure before you get super serious. Travel brings out a different side in people, there’s logistical difficulties, financial stress and problems to solve, and the way that your potential life partner deals with these could show you some red or green flags. If they’re bad to travel with, they’re proooobably not going to be great to spend the rest of your life with.

(Told you I’m not romantic!)

An extended trip

While a couple of weeks off work for a holiday is always a treat, if you can save up your annual leave for a whole month off or even manage to request a sabbatical from your job, an extended trip is one way to learn a lot about yourself in a very short period of time.

Shorter trips can often be planned before you go, which means you can really relax and enjoy your time away. When you plan something longer than 3-4 weeks, you need to be flexible with your plans, which means going with the flow and dealing with issues on the road. Learning to roll with the punches is such an important skill to have throughout life, and gaining that skill through an epic adventure is probably the best way to get it.

Your choice of destination for an extended trip will depend on your location but many Kiwis and Aussies will opt for Europe, Europeans will opt for New Zealand or Australia, and many young travellers around the world head to Southeast Asia for a month or so of backpacking.

A working holiday

A month or so not long enough for you? It wasn’t for me either, enter the working holiday!

A working holiday (also known as a gap year) is where young people move overseas with the main aim of travelling, but they get access to a special visa which allows them to legally work to fund their travels. There are working holiday visa options in many countries around the world including NZ, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA, but each country has different eligibility requirements.

There are loads of reasons to do a working holiday, but the main benefits are that you can get amongst the local life of wherever you move to, you can explore the nearby areas without a strict time limit, and it looks brilliant on any CV.

Working holiday tip : Many companies (like my desk job before being a blogger) have offices or even sister companies overseas, which can offer an easy path into taking a working holiday. Consider these future options when you’re tossing up jobs to apply for, and start these conversations with your manager as early in your career as possible.

A luxury getaway

Treat yourself, you deserve it! There are plenty of milestones to celebrate in our 20s, from graduations to engagements to break ups to hitting our career goals, so book a fancy hotel, pop a bottle of champagne from your sea-view balcony and enjoy the good life.

If you can’t afford a full on luxury adventure (let’s be honest, neither can I), consider travelling in a way I like to call “shithouse to penthouse”*. Book the majority of your trip in a cheaper, self-catering accommodation to save on nightly spend and food, then splurge on a night or two at a five star hotel. This is how I stayed at luxury hotels in Hawaii, Portugal, Mykonos and Bali without blowing out my budget.

*Shithouse to penthouse isn’t a fair representation because the cheaper option could be super lovely and not shitty at all, it just needs to be cheap! But I can’t change the name because nothing else is as catchy.

A backpacking trip

And on the totally opposite end of the scale, another bucket list trip in your 20s is a backpacker adventure where you’re on a mission to make your money go as far as possible.

Whether you’re making your way around the lovingly-nicknamed Banana Pancake Trail in Southeast Asia or embarking on a classic Eurotrip, a stint of hostels, overnight bus rides and pub crawls will likely give you life-long friends, unforgettable memories and, without a doubt, some serious financial prowess. Did I once live off Nutella crepes and coconut ice cream for one month in Thailand and Cambodia? Yes.

Even when you reach the point of never wanting to stay in a dorm room or chug a cocktail bucket ever again, the people you meet, the experiences you have and the skills you learn while backpacking will stay with you for a lifetime.

A food crawl

Hands up if you travel for food 🙋🏼‍♀️

If you love doing a deep dive into the culinary scene of wherever you’re visiting, doing a fully food-focused adventure is absolutely one for your bucket list. And while food trips are incredible no matter your age, I do feel that my metabolism and energy levels were much more prepared for a full day of eating in my early 20s!

I’ve never cared about watching what I eat, especially while I’m travelling, because it’s my personal belief that life is too short to say no to pasta when you’re in Italy (and no to cheese in France, and no to kebabs in Turkey, and so on and so forth). But while I used to be able to handle carb-heavy and sugar-filled dishes from dawn til dusk with no issues, as I near my 30th birthday a main-sized portion of carbonara for lunch is likely to put me to sleep before you can say happy hour.

Make the most of a youthful metabolism and food crawl your way around a country or continent before you lose the chance.

An active adventure

If you’re the type of traveller who loves pushing your body to its physical limit (and I don’t mean by eating pasta three times a day), there are some incredible active adventures you could add to your travel to do list before you hit 30.

Some of the classic active trips are trekking to Everest Base Camp or Machu Picchu, hitting the slopes in Whistler or Zermatt, or doing your PADI open water dive course somewhere like the Thai Islands, Great Barrier Reef or Belize.

A road trip

The freedom and spontaneity of a road trip is one of the best feelings in the world, knowing that you can hit the road when you want and drive where you want without having to adhere to transport times or other travellers.

Road tripping can be a bit tougher for those in their early 20s as many car rental companies have additional costs if you’re under 25, but when you hit the sweet spot of being a confident driver in any car and country, not having to pay extra for a young driver surcharge, and still having the ability to roam freely without worrying about responsibilities back home, it’s a great place to be.

Try the van life

Taking a road trip to another level, van life is one travel style that has taken social media by storm. I bet you can picture it: cosying up in your favourite blanket, sipping a coffee as you watch the sunrise from the back window of your van parked up by the beach, set to a dreamy tune on repeat in a 15 second Tik Tok video.

While at times it might seem a bit overdone, the truth is that van life brings a whole new meaning to freedom and it’s something everyone should try at least once!

If you don’t like the idea of having to cook your stir fry on a hot plate that’s about 10cm away from your pillow in the back of a Toyota Hiace (I don’t blame you), I’d recommend upgrading from van life to motorhome life. A friend and I did an epic South Island road trip in a 6.3m 4-berth motorhome and absolutely loved it!

A cultural awakening

Most trips encompass some aspect of learning about a new culture, but planning a trip specifically focused on understanding a different way of life is something super special to experience in your younger years.

Whether you jump on an in-depth group tour to somewhere off the beaten track, participate in a formal exchange where you get to live in a totally different destination, or perhaps you want to learn more about your family’s background and choose to take a heritage trip to your homeland, a cultural adventure is good for the soul and the mind.

A group tour

Many travellers seem to have a bit of an aversion to group tours because they think they’re too touristy and don’t give you enough of an in-depth experience. Of course it depends on the specific tour, but from my group tour experiences I think that’s totally incorrect.

My first group tour was a Contiki down the East Coast of the USA when I was 20, and I still keep in contact with some people in that group ten years later. I’ve since done two more Contiki tours (Europe at 24, Southeast Asia at 27) plus two G Adventures tours in Asia, two Travel Talk tours (Jordan and Turkey), a One Life Philippines tour and a Medsailors Croatia tour all in my late 20s, and I’ve had an incredible time on every single one of them.

If you’re confident and clued up enough to travel independently then that does open many more doors, and it *usually* means your money will go further (not always), but a group tour is perfect for young or new travellers who want security, those short on time, or anyone who is travelling solo and wants to meet like-minded travel buddies.

A festival trip

Festival travel is one for any bucket list, but planning trips around festival dates can be expensiiiiive so it can be hard to make it work once you have kids to run around after or a pricey mortgage to cover each week.

Some of the most popular festivals to add to your bucket list are Oktoberfest in Munich, Holi Festival in India, Burning Man in Nevada and Tomorrowland in Belgium.

An island hopping trip

Last but certainly not least, island hopping is another travel style that requires a bit of flexibility while having enough spending money to travel comfortably. Whether you want to go solo and join a sailing tour, or get a bunch of friends together to book out a boat, spending a week or so at sea is one of the best things you’ll ever do.

You can island hop in many places around the world depending on what type of adventure you’re looking for. There’s an awesome island hopping pass in Fiji that gives you a night at different resorts all through the Yasawa Islands, you could jump on a yacht tour in Croatia or Greece, or cruise around the paradise islands in the Caribbean.

I bet your bucket list is full now! Hopefully that list has inspired you to plan some epic adventures in your 20s (or beyond). I’d love to hear what type of travel in your 20s is most appealing to you, let me know in the comments!

But the culinary adventure doesn’t stop there. Peru’s traditional pachamanca meal is a unique experience, combining meats and vegetables cooked underground on hot stones. Exploring Peru’s food markets is another way to dive into the local culture.

You’ll find an abundance of fresh, unique ingredients and can savor dishes like lomo saltado. Every bite in Peru is a discovery of the country’s rich culinary traditions and innovative flavors.

Laos, on the other hand, is perfect for those who seek a more relaxed pace and an opportunity to immerse themselves in different climates and cultures. The country’s laid-back vibe and beautiful landscapes make it a paradise for backpackers.

Travel in Your 20s: 17 Epic Trips to Take While You’re Young

  • 20 January 2023 17 May 2023

There’s no denying it — your 20s are probably the most formative years when it comes to shaping your beliefs, habits, and overall identity. There are so many major life events that happen over the course of the decade. College , new jobs, marriage, buying a house, having kids… it’s like an endless parade of change! That’s why it’s so important to travel in your 20s and take advantage of your relative freedom and lack of responsibilities.

Here are 17 suggestions for epic trips that everyone should take in their 20s!

(Side note: Of course, there is no age limit for traveling. These trips can be taken in your teens, 30s, 40s, and beyond! I just think that they would be particularly beneficial for people in their 20s — read on to find out why!)

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links. When you purchase through links on my site, I may make a small commission (at no extra cost to you!).

  • An "Eat, Pray, Love" trip

Best types of trips to take in your 20s

A solo trip.

Taking a solo trip in your 20s can be a great way to gain independence and self-confidence.

When you travel alone, you’re in charge of your own schedule and plans, which can help you develop decision-making skills and increase confidence in your own abilities. Planning everything yourself in a foreign country can be daunting, but once you do it, you’ll feel a new-found sense of pride in your capabilities!

Solo travel also provides a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. When you’re on your own, you’re forced to confront your own thoughts and emotions, which can help you gain a deeper understanding of who you are and what you want out of life. Spending time alone in your 20s is really important for self-development.

So many places make an excellent choice for first time solo travelers. I’d recommend Iceland , the UK, and Southeast Asia as great places to consider for a solo trip.

A girls’ trip

A girls’ (or guy’s!) trip can be a great way to build and strengthen relationships with your best friends. Going on a trip with your girl friends allows you to spend quality time together, connect on a deeper level, and create memories that will last a lifetime. This can be particularly important in your 20s when you may be navigating new stages of life and building a support system of strong, trustworthy friends.

Additionally, going on a trip with friends is an opportunity to create lasting memories that you’ll look back on fondly for years to come. You’ll have stories to share and inside jokes to laugh about — plus, it’s just plain fun!

Some of the best girls trip destinations include Miami , Nashville, Sedona , Las Vegas, and Mexico .

A road trip

Road trips are an amazing way to explore a new destination with complete freedom. The sense of adventure you get from being able to stop where you want and be spontaneous is unmatched! It’s a great feeling to experience, especially when you’re first entering adulthood.

They are a super accessible way to travel as well. Road tripping can often be cheaper than flying, and you’re able to save on accommodation costs by camping or staying in budget-friendly options along the way. Once you get to your destination, you’ll also save on transportation costs since you already have your own vehicle!

In the United States , most car rental companies require you to be at least 20 years old to rent a car. If you’re under 25, you might have to pay a few extra fees and/or insurance costs. It’s always a good idea to have your own comprehensive travel insurance too, just to be safe!

Try road tripping around the Canadian Rockies , New Zealand’s South Island , or the Midwest’s Great Lakes .

A backpacking trip

For the longest time, I’ve been a huge advocate for backpacks as the superior luggage option for travel. They’re comfortable, they’re convenient, and they fit way more than you’d expect!

Backpacking is almost a rite of passage for people in their early 20s. Taking a gap year after graduating from college or spending a few months abroad between jobs is an incredible adventure and a great way to immerse yourself in the top destinations around the world.

It’s also relatively inexpensive, which is pretty important for travel in your 20s. Book a few cheap flights , stay in hostels, and eat exclusively street food — being so young means that you can sacrifice a bit of comfort to travel longer. Packing carry-on only is also a skill that will save you lots of money (and stress, once your checked bag is inevitably lost by the airlines!).

Classic backpacking destinations include Europe , Southeast Asia, and South America .

A luxury trip

On the other end of the spectrum, your 20s also make the perfect time to treat yourself to a luxury trip.

In my opinion, the best thing about travel is experiencing things that you don’t normally get to in your day-to-day life. And what better way to do that than by relaxing at a day spa or staying in a five-star hotel ?

Because life is so short, any reason could be a good reason to treat yourself to a luxury vacation. Graduating college, going on your honeymoon, or celebrating a promotion at work are all 100% valid. (So is booking a trip just because you want to, hah!)

Luxury trips don’t need to break the bank, either — there are lots of affordable destinations where the US dollar stretches particularly far. This includes places like Bali, Portugal, the Philippines, and parts of Mexico .

Study abroad

There’s no better way for college students to see a new part of the world than by studying abroad. My year abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France is still up there as one of the best years of my life.

You’ll get to learn about rich history, practice overcoming the language barrier, and experience a unique culture different from your own. Study abroad is also a great time to travel independently and take advantage of youth discounts, Interrail passes , and budget airlines.

Although there are study abroad programs available all over the world, the most popular ones (for American students) are in Western Europe. Make sure to pick a country that you’re interested in and passionate about — whether that be the language, the culture, or the food!

A working holiday

If you’ve ever wanted to experience living and working in a different country, a working holiday could be the right choice for you!

When you get a working holiday visa, you’re able to live and work in a country for an extended amount of time. You get to try out what it’s like to live abroad while making a bit of money to support your travels. Most countries only offer working holiday visas for people up until the age of 30, making it the perfect opportunity to travel in your 20s.

For Americans, Canadians, and Europeans, Australia and New Zealand are a classic choice for a working holiday (and vise versa!). Your options will be different depending on which country your passport is from — make sure to check each country’s specific requirements on their official websites.

A city break

Especially if you’re from a small town, taking a trip to a big city can be an eye-opening experience.

Cosmopolitan cities like New York City, London, Singapore, and San Francisco will have a little bit of something for every type of travel style. You can expand your cultural horizons with museums and art galleries, party the night away at world-class nightclubs, and eat so many different types of cuisines.

Your 20s are all about experiencing new things and seizing every opportunity — big cities allow you to do that with ease.

A romantic getaway

Romantic getaways with your significant other can strengthen your bond away from the distractions and stresses of everyday life. If you’ve been together for a while, it’s also a good opportunity to celebrate a milestone or special occasion, like an anniversary or engagement.

In my opinion, traveling with your partner is a must before deciding that they’re the one for you. Traveling can put you in stressful situations, and it’s important to see how they respond. (Are they nice to service staff? Do they lash out at strangers? Or, heaven forbid, do they stand up as soon as the plane lands?!)

Whether you’re whisked away to a secluded cabin in the woods or to the beautiful beaches of the Greek Islands, these getaways definitely create a unique and indulgent atmosphere.

A festival trip

Attending festivals is so fun, and is even more special in a new country! You’ll get to experience new music, art, and culture in a lively setting. Depending on the type of festival, you’ll also be able to learn about different traditions and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Festivals are also some of the best places to meet other fellow travelers, especially if you’re traveling solo. Generally, other festival-goers are open-minded, easygoing, and will be open to meeting new people.

For some epic bucket list festivals, try traveling to Germany for Oktoberfest, Belgium for Tomorrowland, or Nevada for Burning Man.

An adventurous trip

If you’re into thrill-seeking and active pursuits, an adventurous trip is a great one to take in your 20s. Hiking , cycling, water sports, skydiving, bungeeing — scheduling these types of activities during your trip are a sure-fire way to get any adrenaline-junkie excited.

Physically, your 20s are also the best time to take an adventure-focused trip. You’re probably at your peak level of fitness and have more energy than you will later on in life.

Costa Rica, New Zealand , and Peru are great places to have adventurous holiday because they offer a wide range of outdoor activities and day trips.

A family holiday

Just because you’re in your 20s doesn’t mean that you need to stop taking family vacations! They’re an excellent time to bond with your loved ones and create new memories, which is even more important now that you’ve probably moved out on your own.

Family holidays can be a good time to reconnect with your parents and siblings, especially if you don’t live in the same city anymore. It’s nice to schedule a set time every year where you’ll all be together — that way, you (and your family members!) have something to look forward to.

A food-focused trip

I don’t know about you, but personally, the search for delicious food is always a driving force in my travels.

Taking a food-focused trip is a must in your 20s because you’ll get exposed to new cuisines and might discover something that becomes your new favorite food! Whether you’re perusing a local market , trying an unusual new delicacy, or fine dining in a Michelin-starred restaurant, foodie travel is always a good time.

Even if your entire trip isn’t centered on eating, taking a guided food tour is a fun idea. That way, you’ll be able to try a few local dishes that you might not have tried otherwise.

A tropical getaway

Tropical getaways are some of the best trips to travel in your 20s because they provide you with much-needed rest and relaxation.

With all the change that happens in this stage of life (graduations, new jobs, new relationships, etc.), it’s important to take some quality time away from the hustle and bustle to do nothing. Tropical vacations make doing nothing very easy. Lay on the beach, drink a piña colada, and soak in the sun to escape from the real world for a bit.

Some amazing places for a tropical getaway include Fiji, the Dominican Republic , the Maldives, and Tahiti.

Mana Island resort, Fiji

A group tour

Group trips are a great place to meet like-minded individuals with similar interests, especially if you’re traveling solo . Tons of companies offer trips geared towards people in their 20s, meaning you’ll most likely make some new friends that share similar values and are in the same stage of life.

If it’s your first trip abroad or to a particular destination, group trips can also be a convenient and safe way to test the waters. You’ll often have your entire trip planned out for you, which can be really helpful if you’re not used to planning transportation and accommodation logistics . You’ll also have a tour guide that’s familiar with the area who can provide assistance and make you feel more comfortable.

Group trips cater to all types of travelers and destinations — G Adventures , Viator , and Intrepid Travel are some popular options.

A stint at van life

Living the van life is one travel experience that many people don’t get to have. It’s one that I think is really fun and insightful, though, which is why I recommend it when traveling in your 20s!

Just like a road trip, van life is both cost-effective and flexible. It eliminates the need to pay for accommodation on the road and saves you money on transportation costs at your destination. You get to practice being more self-reliant, adventurous, and resourceful with your limited amount of space.

Van life is also a slower and more relaxing way to travel. Generally, you’ll spend a few weeks to a few months in your van at a time, getting to explore each place in more depth. Living in a van disconnects you from your daily routine and forces you to adapt to a simpler lifestyle. All in all, van life comes with a lot of benefits, especially for someone in their 20s that wants a unique and independent style of travel.

An “Eat, Pray, Love” trip

Based on the bestselling novel “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, this kind of trip is one where you seek out good food, spiritual enlightenment, and/or romantic adventure in order to better yourself. These trips typically involve exploring different cultures, getting out of your comfort zone, and visiting places of spiritual significance.

It might be a cliche, but your twenties are a time to “find yourself.” Taking a trip that focuses on feeling a sense of adventure, freedom, and spiritual fulfillment is one of the best ways to do so. This is the perfect age to learn from your personal experiences and apply them to the rest of your life.

Whether you’re practicing yoga in India, staying in Buddhist temples in Nepal, or attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru , any trip where you connect with your true self is invaluable in your 20s.

Why travel in your 20s?

As young adults, it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities and flexibility that come with being in our 20s. One way to do this is by traveling and experiencing new places, communities, and landscapes. Here are just a few of the top benefits of traveling in your 20s:

Fewer responsibilities

Generally, the younger you are, the fewer responsibilities you have.

Taking an impromptu weekend trip or a long-term trek are way easier when you don’t have kids, pets, or a rigid full-time job. Young people definitely have the advantage when it comes to flexibility and spontaneity — having lots of free time allows you to travel without remorse!

Aside from having fewer obligations, people in their 20s often have more financial freedom, too. With new jobs to pad their savings account and fewer financial obligations such as mortgages, car payments, or families to support, many 20-somethings can save for travel more easily. Your 20s are the perfect time to start checking off that travel bucket list!

Young, dumb, & broke

The older you get, the less tolerance you have for discomfort and inconvenience. Travel in your 20s is great because you’re more open to new experiences and can handle uncomfortable situations more easily.

During my year studying abroad in France, my friends and I constantly took weekend trips all over Europe. We took 10€ Ryanair flights (in the middle seat), stayed in grimy hostels, and squeezed in as many activities and nights out as possible.

It was such a great experience that would have been completely different if I wasn’t as open to the discomfort. Although I wouldn’t want to stay in 30-bed mixed hostel dorms nowadays, I’m so grateful that I took the plunge and chased the adventures in my early 20s.

Find yourself

Throughout their 20s, many people are still figuring out who they are and what they want out of life. Traveling during this time allows you to immerse yourself in new cultures, meet new people, gain fresh perspectives, and challenge yourself and your beliefs.

These experiences can be instrumental in helping you discover your passions, values, and goals, which are all important aspects of “finding yourself.”

Travel in your 20s is a great way to become the best version of yourself — the more you get off the beaten track, the more enriched your life will ultimately become.

20 Places to Travel in Your 20s

20 Places to Travel in Your 20s

This post was originally published November 22, 2016, and was updated April 18, 2018.

Recently, the New York Times tweeted a link promising 20 places to travel in your 20s. Like the rest of humanity, I’m a total sucker for lists and couldn’t resist reading.

I’ve written a lot about how much I enjoy trip planning. Sometimes it can be daunting, though. The world is a freaking big place! As silly as this sounds, I’ve at times wondered if I’m traveling to all the places I’m supposed to be traveling to.

That’s ridiculous, though.

Travel is an incredibly intimate and personal thing. Despite what many blogs and other publications promise, there’s no ultimate list of places to travel in your 20s or 30s or 40s or lifetime. It’s important to remember these lists are simply sources of inspiration—not checklists. NYT writer Dan Saltzstein noted this very sentiment before continuing the list . Each traveler has to decide her or his ultimate list of places to travel.

20 places to travel in your 20s

A national park.

Super cool to start this list with a USA destination. Too many Americans think about travel on only a global scale. People get so caught up in the idea of backpacking around Europe or partying in Southeast Asia they forget about all the beautiful places in their very own country—perhaps even their own state. By that same token, travelers visiting the USA overwhelmingly gravitate toward big cities like New York City and Los Angeles. While those cities have a lot to offer, the natural beauty of national parks is equally (if not more) captivating and should not to be missed. My personal fave? Yosemite National Park .

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Backpackers are wild for Prague. It’s often lauded as one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Eastern Europe. I visited in April 2016, and while it was affordable, it definitely wasn’t dirt cheap like many blogs had led me to believe. Regardless, it’s a beautiful city and worth visiting. Like so much else, bus travel is affordable, so pair Prague with Budapest (a city you also find on this list) . While visiting Eastern Europe, I spent three days in Budapest, one day in Vienna and three days in Prague. Bus trips to and from Vienna were three to four hours and cost  € 15 –  € 20.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Oaxaca, Mexico

I’ve never been to Oaxaca but grew up admiring Oaxacan folk art . Over the years, my mom has traveled to Oaxaca many times. It’s one of her favorite cities, and we have a collection of Oaxacan folk art displayed throughout our home to prove it. Every year our Christmas tree is adorned with tin decorations made in the likeness of alberijes . I plan to someday visit Oaxaca myself. Between the fantastical folk art and renowned gastronomy, I’m sure the city won’t disappoint.

Even though it’s been almost a year since Americans were permitted to travel to Cuba, I haven’t given the country much thought. The country was under embargo for the majority of my life, and it just hasn’t sunk in yet that I’m allowed to visit. I did eat at a Cuban restaurant in Madrid just the other day, though, and I might have a new obsession.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

I’ve been to Amsterdam three times. The first time was during my five-week post-college backpacking trip. On night one, I went on a bar crawl with some Brazilian guys who kept buying me shots of Jaeger. The next two days were spent peering into coffee shops and lounging in Vondelpark (when the weather permitted it, of course). Before my second visit, I vowed to actually see the city, and in less than 24 hours, I made quite the go of it. Despite torrential rain, I visited the Anne Frank House and took a tour of the city’s canals. Amsterdam is famous for its partying, but try to work in some culture between your tokes.

Patagonia, argentina.

South America, I don’t know you, but I love you. When my time in Spain comes to an end later this year, I’m looking forward to traveling in South America. I’ll need to up my camping game before going to Patagonia. For lovers of the great outdoors, Patagonia has it all: mountains, deserts, grasslands and an incredible coastline. Do a Google image search, and prepare to have your breath taken away.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

New Orleans

I feel slightly ashamed not to have visited the majority of North American destinations on this list. Hopefully, I’ll get to NOLA sooner rather than later and drink a hurricane in the streets. From friends who have visited, I’ve heard the nightlife is wild with lots of opportunities to hear live music. I’m also very interested in doing some gastronomical research. When I was living in Indianapolis, one of my favorite places to eat was a place in Broadripple called Yats . They served cajun food, and um, YUM.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

I wanted to visit Germany for ages and finally did so in July 2017. While I was planning the trip, I felt a little intimated because I’d read on other travel blogs that Berlin can be a tough city to navigate due to its expansiveness. It’s definitely a big city, but I didn’t have any trouble getting around. The hostels I stayed in were centrally located, and public transportation was easy to use. The highlight of my time in Berlin was an alternative street tour which showcased the city’s street art. It’s a city I definitely see myself visiting again. Similar to Madrid, I liked the vibe of everyone just doing their own thing.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Canada, oh, Canada. The USA’s kindly neighbor to the north. I’ve visited Canada on two occasions, both before I turned 21. Yes, I was that American who crossed over from Detroit to Windsor in order to take advantage of the lower drinking age. Now that I’m 26, I’d like to take an actual trip to Canada, and Montreal seems like a good place to start. It’s regarded as a very European city, so I should feel right at home.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Unlike a lot of 20something travelers, I don’t have a whole of interest in exploring Southeast Asia (at the moment). NYT’s list does make Vietnam sound intriguing, though. It’s a budget-friendly destination with a lot to offer in terms of food, culture and natural beauty. Sounds right up my alley. Beautiful beaches and Buddhist pagodas? What more could you ask for?

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

I don’t know what first turned me onto Budapest, but I’d been wanting to visit the Hungarian capital for as long as I could remember. I finally visited in April 2016, and it didn’t disappoint. Budapest had the shit bombed out of it during WWII but has been almost completely restored. I love the city’s vibe, which definitely embodies rising from the ashes. Whether you’re a big partier or not, Budapest’s iconic ruin bars are a must when visiting. Constructed in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores or lots, ruin bars were once the heart of the underground scene but have become much more mainstream over the last ten years. One memorable night, I watched several Hungarian rappers perform at Instant . I hadn’t the faintest clue what they were saying, but nevertheless, watching them perform was super fun.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

New Zealand

I’ve never been to New Zealand, but I’ve seen Lord of the Rings a dozen times, so I’m basically an expert. No? Okay. I recently saw on Instagram (yay, social media stalking) a couple I went to college with went to New Zealand for their honeymoon. I thought that was way cool because beach resorts and cruises are such a snooze. Exploring the island by hiking (just like Frodo and Sam!) seems like such a fun honeymoon that it’s making me consider getting married. Ha!

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Here’s another reference to my rampant social media stalking, but this year people seemed to be losing their minds over Iceland. I can see why, though. How could you ever say no to smearing clay all over your face whilst sitting in a hot lagoon? You might think I’m joking, but that for real sounds like my jam. If (should I just say when?) I visit Iceland, I plan to get out of Reykjavik and find me some hot springs.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Over the last few years, I’ve visited Barcelona three times. The first time was in 2014 as part of my backpacking trip. I stayed on La Rambla, which is the tourist heart of the city. I hated it. I gave the city a second chance in March 2016, and I’m glad I did. I stayed in an Airbnb near La Sagrada Familia. It was a much more residential neighborhood, and as a result, I had an entirely different (more positive) experience. I visited Barcelona for a third time in April 2017 and spent a day at Montserrat. It’s a monastery built into the mountains outside the city. From Barcelona, it’s an easy train ride followed by a cable car journey that’s definitely not for anyone scared of heights!

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

California coast

For a while, road trips were severely overrated, but now, they’re severely underrated. How fun does driving along the Pacific Coast Highway sound? It’s 147 of the most breathtaking miles in America . Roadtripping from Carmel to Morro Bay would be expensive, which isn’t ideal for travel in your 20s, but according to NYT, you can save a few bucks by camping along the way. I’m all for that!

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

I should probably buy myself a world map because when I moved to Spain, I didn’t realize how close it is to Africa, more specifically Morocco. It’s only a two-hour flight from Madrid to Marrakech. Inspired by the proximity, my boyfriend is studying Arabic. He even has a professional teacher through italki ! When he gets better, he wants to make the trip and try out his language skills. I’d by lying if I didn’t say the famous  medinas  (markets) intrigue me.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Costa Rica seems awesome, but after reading a post the other day about Nicaragua , I think I’d rather visit there instead. Apparently, Nicaragua is what Costa Rica was like before it got super popular and touristy. Not that there’s anything wrong with being super popular and touristy. I live in Madrid for crying out loud! Sometimes you want to get off the beaten path a little, and I think this might be one of those times.

A greek island that’s not mykonos, ios or santorini.

Personally, when I get to Greece, I’m interested in ferrying to the island of Crete. I want to hike the Samaria Gorge . You know how I love a strenuous hike! Like NYT, I believe everyone should seek out local, cultural experiences, but if you want to party on Mykonos, GO FOR IT! Always be true to yourself as a traveler.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Although I never got to Lisbon while living in Spain, I visited Porto in February 2016. I can’t say enough good things about the city, and many of my friends who’ve visited both actually prefer Porto. The food is delicious, the people are nice, and the prices are cheap!  The two cities have a pretty fierce rivalry, a north versus south kind of thing. Once I visit Lisbon, I’ll let you know on which side I fall.

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

The Croatian coast

Backpackers adore the Adriatic coast in Croatia for its natural beauty and cheap prices. Generally, travelers fly into Dubrovnik and make their way along the coast. In summer, Croatia hosts several up-and-coming European music festivals . Whenever I get back to Europe, my travel budget is going to force me to choose between Croatia and Greece. Ugh, it’s going to be a tough decision. I want to hop some islands!

From New Orleans and New Zealand to Berlin and Budapest, these are the 20s places to travel in your 20s. I broke down The New York Times' list and added a thing or two.

Have you visited any of NYT’s 20 places to travel in your 20s? What are your thoughts on this list? How about on travel lists in general?

20 Amazing Places To Travel To In Your 20s

best places for 20 somethings to travel

There’s no better way to change your perception of the world — and maybe yourself — than travel. You’ll experience different cultures, meet new friends and make lifelong memories. But traveling in your 20s poses challenges: You might have financial constraints, limited time off from work and concerns about safety. So think of this selection of 20 places less as a checklist and more as a starter kit to world travel. (We’ve left out the obvious classic cities: New York, Paris, London. They are, of course, great places to visit, too.)

  • A national park. They represent so much of what’s great about the United States — beauty, diversity of landscape, freedom. But which one to visit? There’s  Acadia  in Maine, the  Badlands  in South Dakota, Joshua Tree in California and 55 others. Pluses for young travelers: Camping (or park cabins) will help save on lodging; they are equally suited to solo travelers and groups, and they are endlessly Instagram-friendly. (Also consider Canada’s national parks, which will  offer free admission  for all of 2017, the country’s 150th birthday.)

Mardi Gras isn't the only time of year to visit NOLA . Bourbon Street calls 20-somethings all year-round, and even if you're not the biggest party animal, the city's historic French Quarter, Garden District, and music scene are also worth visiting for.

El Nido, Palawan

El Nido, Palawan

On top of its stunning white-sand beaches and clear blue waters, the Philippine municipality is also a budget-friendly place to travel to. Palawan Island is known for its gorgeous landscape and coral reefs and as "The Last Ecological Frontier of the Philippines" for its high biodiversity. Though Palawan has the highest concentration of islands within an archipelago of 1,780 islands, it's actually the least populated region in the country.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza, Spain

Notorious for being one of Europe's liveliest party grounds, Ibiza is the ideal destination to cross off in your 20s. With more than 100 miles of coastline and 50 beaches, you'll get in plenty of sun and water activities. And don't forget about the world-famous clubs — there's a reason it's called the party island.

Tokyo

Tokyo is where you'll find just as much Japanese tradition as pop culture. You'll be able to enjoy endless options of entertainment, shopping, and dining, not to mention plenty of cultural and historical sites to fill up your day.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Not only does Amsterdam have a thriving club and nightlife scene, the city itself is pure magic any time of day. The modern and artistic capital is characterized by its canals and colorful architecture that you can navigate via bike like the locals. The fact that it's 420-friendly is only a plus.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland

Especially with such affordable flights available out of the US, Iceland is the perfect place for young travelers. Reykjavik is a great starting point for your Nordic adventure, but there are plenty other sites worth driving out to from the capital. The Blue Lagoon and Sólheimasandur (famous plane crash site) are just a couple worth mentioning.

Miami

Forget Vegas, Miami is really where it's at. Amazing nightlife, beautiful beaches, colorful architecture, delicious food, and a strong Latin influence make the "Magic City" the perfect combination of culture and fun. Expect to find yourself wanting to extend your stay.

Family Vacations With College Kids and 20-Somethings

From Montreal to Granada, Wonderful, Adventure Packed-Destinations for Families

Teens and 20-somethings are adventuresome travel companions, who enjoy a mix of outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, fine dining, and cool shopping. Continue reading for tips on structuring the perfect family vacation when everyone's grown up, then check out this sampling of great vacation destinations for families with young adults.

Montreal, Canada

Perry Mastrovito / The Image Bank / Getty Images

The combination of European feel, museums, boutiques and club scene made Montreal a top pick among teens and 20-somethings, as well as their parents. Old Montreal bustles with museums, boutiques, fine dining and café culture.

Street performers, jugglers, and musicians fill the former marketplace of Place Jacques-Cartier. And Mount Royal rises above the center of the city, offering beautiful parks, hiking trails, and horseback riding. A 23-year-old intern at TravelMuse.com sold us on the idea after she called it her favorite all-around city. This gorgeous 2-minute video sealed the deal. We're booking our tickets now for the  summer . Winter is icy.

San Diego, California

San Diego 's beautiful beaches—so alluring for surfers, sunbathers, divers, and kayakers—are an outdoorsy counterpoint to the city's fabulous museums, world-famous zoo, and the clubs and cafes of its Gaslamp Quarter, where 20-somethings will want to hang after mom and dad go to bed.

Nearby La Jolla boasts swanky boutiques and posh shops, and Coronado Island lends a retro vibe and powdery soft beaches to your must-see list.

Other places to see include coastal towns nearby like Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Del Mar, home of the famous race track. The Del Mar Racetrack season runs from mid-July through early September. There's also the very popular Del Mar Fair.

New Orleans

Bruce Soileau / Stock.Xchng Photos

New Orleans' French Quarter provides jazzy nightlife and outrageously wonderful dining possibilities, but teens and 20-somethings may also be very interested in the ample opportunities for voluntourism. Among the groups working here: Hands on New Orleans and Habitat for Humanity .

Other great things to do in New Orleans and the surrounding area include bayou tours, architectural tours, and museums.

Dublin, Ireland

Gian / Stock.Xchng Photos

Europe offers so many exciting destinations, but Dublin has a particularly cool vibe, says TravelMuse 's Donna Airoldi, that combines "outdoorsy days and then at night, live music, restaurants, and clubs."

In addition to the historical attractions and hiking possibilities, Dublin's Temple Bar area, the narrow, cobblestoned streets near Christ Church Cathedral, is home to bohemian shops, a thriving arts scene, and plenty of late night clubbing. In short, there's plenty to do here for teens, as well as enough nightlife to satisfy the 20-something crowd.

If your family enjoys hitting the links, there are plenty of gorgeous golf courses in Ireland for you to try out. Going outside of the city to see the countryside is a day trip that's worth the time, as the Irish countryside is unique and beautiful.

Granada, Nicaragua

Costa Rica is an undeniably popular vacation destination, but Airoldi calls neighboring Nicaragua , with its Pacific and Caribbean coasts, an undiscovered jewel.

It's not "uber-developed," she says, so prices are still low, but it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world discovers the Central American country's beach towns, towering volcanoes, lush jungles, and great cities. They include Granada, a colonial-era jewel on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.

There are ample opportunities to explore, she says, everything from coffee farm tours to petroglyphs, jungle hikes, and other adventures that will keep teens and 20-somethings enthralled.

If you haven't yet heard about glamping, check into it for a fun and adventurous vacation with your family. Head to Montana, California, upstate New York or lots of other places across the country to try out camping for those who prefer running water and a mattress to sleep on. Horseback riding, hiking , gourmet meals, and more are part of the glamping experience.

More Suggestions

New York City, Seattle, Portland, and Austin are all great cities for families traveling with older teens and 20-somethings . Got skiers? Vail or Aspen, with their lounge and restaurant scenes and celebrity factor, are always popular too.

America is currently in time out. Which means that international travel is, for the foreseeable future, not a possibility. However, travel is still an option domestically, and this may very well prove to be a blessing in disguise! Because, the truth is, there’s so much to see and do in America that not even Americans make the time or effort to appreciate. It’s truly as diverse as the entire European continent.

best places to travel in your 20s in the us

The U.S. is brimming with places to visit solo!

But, truth be told, there’s plenty of reason to be concerned while traveling America. After all, our current travel restrictions are all related to COVID and a collective mismanagement of this crisis. It’s important to remember there’s no guarantee of safety. But, if you’re like many 20-somethings, you may be feeling restless.

If you’re up for it, traveling in America is a wonderful experience. And it may even engender a newfound appreciation for the country, which may be a much-needed reminder of what we’re striving to redeem and renew in our nation.

So, where are the 6 best places to travel in your 20s in the US? Well, we know what’s on your mind before that...

Should I travel in the US right now?

While there are, undoubtedly, innumerable trips to take in your 20s in the US that you could be capitalizing on, this very much comes down to you. During such a time, safety is not guaranteed, and this kind of thing incontrovertibly increases your chances for exposure to the coronavirus.

But, if you really want to travel, there are plenty of great trips to take in your 20s in the US (just be sure to follow all proper preventative measures and to brush up on state laws regarding quarantine).

Of course, anything more or less isolated is ideal—like maybe a road trip or camping. Just keep in mind that these kinds of trips will present their own risks, and aren’t necessarily for everyone.

6 best places for millennials to travel in the US

1. california : yosemite national park.

best places to travel alone in your 20s in the us

Beautiful coasts, dry deserts, reaching mountains—California has it all.

  • Why? Yosemite National Park is a place that offers multitudes of outdoor activities. It has everything, which makes it one of the best places to travel in your 20s in the US. It has a stunning landscape that offers granite cliffs, meadows, lakes, waterfalls, and gargantuan sequoia groves. There’s also plenty of space to distance safely and comfortably. It’s the perfect sanctuary from a world that’s seemingly eating itself alive.
  • When? May and September.
  • What? Whether you’re into hiking, rock climbing, horse back riding, or rafting—there’s something for you to do.
  • Recommended Program: California: Urban and Wilderness Service

2. California : Pacific Coast Highway

  • Why? California is pretty widely renowned for its natural attractions, and for good reason. It sits on the precipice of our Pacific shelf, and it’s truly one of the best places for millennials to travel in the US, especially for those seeking a road trip! The highway snakes along the coast and offers unparalleled vistas, internationally or domestically. It’s a trip that can be tailored to fit what you’re looking for; you can make it as remote as you’d like, though it’s highly recommended to stop in some of the awing cities along the way.
  • When? Late spring, summer, and early fall—but July and August are the sweet spots.
  • What? There are plenty of beaches and beach-related natural activities, like surfing, swimming, boating, etc. The Pacific Coast also hosts a stunning archipelago of cities, from L.A. to San Luis Obispo to San Francisco and so on. Also, there’s wine country and whale-watching. The choices are practically interminable!
  • Recommended Program: San Diego: Community and Sustainability Volunteer Projects

3. Colorado : The Rockies

best places for millennials to travel in the us

Colorado is basically hiking nirvana.

  • Why? People have a tendency to leave America for jaw-dropping experiences, and those same people often overlook the rich nature and culture America harbors! The Rockies are one of best places to travel in your 20s in the US, especially for those struggling to find anything to appreciate in the country. The Rockies host the highest peaks in central North America!
  • When? From June to September—this is when the majority of snow has melted and the hiking trails are unobstructed and safely reachable.
  • What? It’s pretty self-evident that the best thing to do is to explore the breathtaking nature this mountain range and national park offer. This could be in the form of wildlife watching, hiking, biking, camping, and so much more!
  • Recommended Program: 72-Day Wilderness Semester from CO Rockies to Southwest

4. Minnesota : The Great Lakes

  • Why? The Great Lakes are one of America’s unsung destinations—maybe this is more true for Europeans, but there are even many Americans who haven’t been or even entertained the notion of visiting! The awing natural beauty and relative isolation (plus a nightly natural, variegating sky-show) make this a must-see. And, honestly, it’s one of the best places to travel alone in your 20s in the US for those looking for some sanguine, tranquil soul searching (who doesn’t need some of that these days?). There are still some, er, civilized amenities and you won’t be completely on your own.
  • When? People rave about the fall colors, but it’s also great during the spring and summer.
  • What? There’s plenty to do on the water, whether it’s luxuriating on the coast or going for a swim or fishing at historic sites. There are plenty of trails and a beautiful old lighthouse one could hike to. Plus, the food is stellar—especially if you like fish.
  • Recommended Program: Explore Rugged MN and TX Wilderness and Get College Credit

5. Louisiana : New Orleans

best places to travel alone in your 20s in the us

New Orleans is everything a millennial traveler could want!

  • Why? While it’s probably not the safest choice of these in terms of COVID, it’s a place every American should visit. It’s truly one of the richest and most unique cultural hubs we have. It’s truly incubated its own, practically autonomous, identity. New Orleans is unlike anything else in the world , and it doesn’t even feel like it’s a city in America. It’s its own insulated thing. Plus, the drinking and eating experiences are unlike anything else, which makes it one of the best places to travel alone in your 20s in the US. It’s hard to feel lonely when you have a belly full of gumbo and are nursing your nth drink of the night!
  • When? February to May and December to January for more moderate weather.
  • What? Food, drinks, music. There are also an abundance of museums that document its rich culture.
  • Recommended Program: World’s Number One Affordable Volunteer Program

6. Florida : The Florida Keys

  • Why? The Florida Keys is the kind of paradise even God would envy because there’s way more fun . Plus, it’s affordable, and it has a definitely unique vibe from anything else on this list. It’s perfect for those who enjoy the water and tropical atmospherics, and also those who enjoy a drink; those who enjoy both will likely never want to leave. Strangely enough, Florida’s best attraction is relegated to its bottom-most tip, or Mile Marker Zero. But that’s the kind of stuff that cultivates a truly unique identity. Plus, driving from island to island is a surreal experience everyone can enjoy.
  • When? Between March and May.
  • What? There’s almost too much to list—from the ocean to drinking to good food to an Underwater Jesus (the kind of Jesus practically everyone can get behind—maybe even he needs a holiday like this sometimes), there won’t be a dull moment.
  • Recommended Program: Discovery Campus: A New Kind of Campus for Today’s Student

Best places to visit in italy.

Tourists and travel experts have long agreed that Italy is a special place, so much so that the country has become a de facto bucket list destination for just about everyone. Famous for its incredible food, rich historical sites, highly regarded art, charming small towns and picturesque cities, countrysides and coastlines, it's safe to say Italy's offerings are unmatched. U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in Italy considering a number of factors, from affordability and seasonality to sights and crowds, to help you decide exactly where to go. Have a favorite destination in Italy? Cast your vote below to influence next year's ranking.

Amalfi Coast

Cinque terre, tuscany, italy.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

A standard stop on many European vacation itineraries , Rome is not to be missed. Italy’s capital city is a globally renowned cultural and historical powerhouse, boasting everything from ancient ruins and tranquil parks to Michelin-starred restaurants. Here, you'll find the most important relic from the Roman Empire (the Colosseum), some of Michelangelo's greatest works (in the Sistine Chapel), an 18th century Baroque-style fountain (the Trevi Fountain) and, of course, the center of Catholicism (Vatican City). Other can’t-miss tourist attractions in the Eternal City include the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest church.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Situated in the scenic Tuscan valley, Florence woos travelers with old-world avenues leading to picturesque piazzas big and small. While you're soaking up the city's splendor, make sure to stop by the Piazza del Duomo, where the breathtaking Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is located, and the romantic Ponte Vecchio, a 14th century bridge overlooking the Arno River. Once central to the Renaissance movement, Florence also offers art aficionados the opportunity to see famous pieces by Michelangelo and other iconic artists of that period. As an added bonus, Florence is ideal for a daytrip to the Chianti wine region.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

The journey to the cliff-side Amalfi Coast involves heart-stopping, hairpin turns on narrow roads, but travelers agree this is part of the fun. The region covers more than 30 miles of coastline and is home to 13 colorful seaside towns, each with its own story. Positano and Amalfi are the most popular, housing numerous hotels and sights. While here, hike, relax on the beach and eat to your heart's content (there are multiple Michelin-starred restaurants along the Amalfi Coast). For something more off-the-beaten-path, set your sights on Atrani. This humble fishing village boasts medieval whitewashed architecture, winding alleys and authentic Italian charm.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

There are few destinations in the world that are quite like Venice. Its uniqueness can largely be attributed to the canals that run through this northern Italian city like roads, carrying water taxis and buses in addition to its fleet of famous gondolas. As such, there is a palpable bustle here that may surprise some first-timers. For a relaxing Venice vacation, seek out the smaller streets and canals away from the busy Grand Canal and St. Mark's Square. Just be sure to stroll across Rialto Bridge and tour the grand St. Mark’s Basilica at least once.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Cinque Terre, located on Italy's northern Ligurian coast, is made up of five picturesque towns – Manarola, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia and Riomaggiore. Manarola, the region’s oldest town, boasts scenic vineyards, olive groves and a centuries-old bell tower. Meanwhile, Vernazza, often considered one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, is well-known for its picture-perfect houses and grand medieval castle. The Cinque Terre offers an abundance of exciting activities, from boat tours and hiking to cooking classes and wine tastings. While here, don’t forget to save time for exploring the cliff-side Footpath Monterosso trail, a beautiful hiking path connecting Vernazza and Monterosso.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

For centuries, this small island off the coast of southern Italy has attracted plenty of famous faces, from emperors to movie stars, due to its gorgeous scenery. Some of Capri's most amazing sights are best seen by boat, including the Faraglioni rock formations and the Blue Grotto, where sunlight turns the water into an unbelievably vivid shade of blue. On land, the Gardens of Augustus and Villa Jovis, an imperial palace, also provide spectacular views. Meanwhile, in the town center, visitors will find high-end shops and restaurants where they can relax after a long day of sightseeing.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Considered the land of the sirens in Greek mythology, Sorrento continues to lure people with its charm and stunning views. Here, vacationers can explore enchanting piazzas or relax near the water before watching the sun set behind the cliffs. Plus, lemons are big in Sorrento – both in size and in popularity – and the area is known as one of the best places in the world to taste authentic limoncello, a lemon-flavored liquor. It's also the perfect base for daytrips and boat tours to nearby Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and other popular Italian locales.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Italy's second-largest city is best known for its high fashion, playing host to Milan Fashion Week each winter and home to iconic fashion houses including Giorgio Armani, Prada and Versace. Visitors can peruse such high-end brands at the dazzling Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade. But Milan's architecture (including the Gothic Milan Cathedral and grand Teatro alla Scala opera house) and sites like Castello Sforzesco (which holds nearly 10 museums and exhibitions) are worth a visit on their own. What's more, the city is incredibly walkable, so feel free to explore on foot – with or without designer stilettos.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Located about 30 miles from Verona, Lake Garda tends to be more approachable and wallet-friendly (if a bit more touristy) than Lake Como. Activities in this recreational hot spot include swimming and windsurfing, as well as hiking and taking a funicular to Mount Baldo. Lake Garda also attracts families with Gardaland Resort, which includes themed hotels as well as an amusement park, water park and aquarium. If you're looking to get away from the crowds, go beyond the main tourist sites to the quieter northern side of the lake, where you'll find the highest mountains and tucked-away towns.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

If you're looking for Italy without the crowds, Tuscany is really all it's cracked up to be. Italy's famous countryside offers travelers spectacular landscapes dotted with romantic villas and castles equipped with wineries and superb restaurants. Don’t miss out on a visit to the walled city of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval towers. What's more, Tuscan locales like Pisa (which offers much more than its leaning tower) and Siena are an easy drive from top destinations such as Bologna and Cinque Terre, perfect for daytrippers who don't want to stay in one place for too long.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Assisi, a medieval town with religious connections, sits on a hilltop in the lush landscapes of Umbria, just more than 100 miles north of Rome. This peaceful town's biggest draws are its sights dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Italy's patron saints, including the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses his tomb as well as colorful frescos, and The Woods of San Francesco. Beyond its religious heritage, Assisi is worth a visit for its picturesque streets and sweeping views, while its location also makes it ideal for a truffle hunting excursion or wine tasting tour.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

As the location of several ancient Greek legends, Sicily has an almost mythical quality. Once you visit for yourself, you'll see why so many writers were inspired by this island, which happens to be the largest in the Mediterranean. Be enchanted by Sicily's crystal-clear waters and golden beaches. Marvel at Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, or try hiking up it in summer or skiing down it in winter. Also save time for taking in the many cultures that have called this island home at its various cathedrals and archaeological sites.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

This former Roman city in southern Italy is equal parts chilling and impressive. Pompeii was left almost completely intact after it was buried in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Its astonishingly well-preserved ruins now provide present-day visitors a glimpse into what life was like during ancient times. True history buffs might also enjoy a trip to nearby Herculaneum, another city that was preserved by the same eruption, while more adventurous explorers should consider hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius for jaw-dropping panoramas of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Best known for its Shakespeare ties, Verona appeals to fans of "Romeo and Juliet" with themed tours of the sights that allegedly inspired the play. But there is more to this city than its literary link. Verona, located about 15 miles east of Lake Garda, is also home to several impressive attractions and historic buildings (the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after all). Travelers won't want to miss the Arena di Verona, a first-century Roman amphitheater that is still in use, and Giardino Giusti, a beautifully sculpted Renaissance garden.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Sardinia provides the best of both worlds. Costa Smeralda is all about luxury, with its lush beaches and coves overlooking yacht-filled waters. And away from all of the glitz and glamour of Costa Smeralda, you'll find a more laid-back side of the island, including small medieval towns where Sardinians still practice sheepherding and wear traditional clothing. What's more, Sardinia features several ancient ruins, such as UNESCO World Heritage-listed Su Nuraxi di Barumini.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

If you really want to treat yourself on your next vacation, Lake Como is where you want to be. Here, opulent villas and hotels line the shores and sandy beaches beckon to sun seekers. You'll see sleek sailboats and speedboats coasting in the middle of the lake, which is the perfect place to admire the region's surrounding hills. Meanwhile, for a lesson in luxury, tour one of the region’s grand villas; top picks among travelers include Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello. Later, check out the Como Cathedral, a magnificent structure boasting Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

The small, crescent-shaped village of Portofino is known as a vacation hot spot for the rich and famous. The water surrounding Portofino is often filled with yachts and is great for swimming and diving. Plus, the area's beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an excellent place to unwind. When travelers need a break from relaxing, they can venture just outside of Portofino to check out historical sites like Castello Brown, an ancient military fortress with incredible views of the Marina di Portofino, and Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, a 10th century monastery that can only be reached by foot or ferry.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Thought to have been inhabited 12,000 years ago, Matera is one of the world's oldest continually occupied towns. Located in the Basilicata region in southern Italy, just west of Puglia, Matera's distinguishing features are its sassi (cave dwellings), which were inhabited until the 1950s. While here, look out for the many viewpoints, called belvederes, for a glimpse of the breathtaking cliffside. Visit Sasso Caveoso for the Casa Grotta cave house (inhabited until 1957) and the Santa Maria de Idris, a rupestrian church carved from the rocky landscape. Meanwhile, in Sasso Barisano – the oldest part of the city – you'll find modern comforts like hotels, restaurants and shops.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

There are several reasons why Bologna, the capital of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is often called "la dotta, la grassa e la rossa" ("the learned, the fat and the red"). For one, it's home to the oldest university in Europe, the University of Bologna. The city is also a food lover's dream thanks to its world-renowned cuisine, which includes Italian staples like tortellini and lasagna Bolognese. Bologna even features a gelato university and the food-themed amusement park, FICO Eataly World. Plus, the city boasts an array of terra cotta-roofed medieval buildings, including a pair of leaning towers.

best places for 20 somethings to travel

Located in the northwest corner of Italy, Turin is the perfect city break brimming with grand architecture, museums and delightful cuisine. Must-visit attractions include Mole Antonelliana (a former synagogue turned into a cinema museum), the 16th-century Royal Palace of Turin and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum). Once you've toured the top sights, settle into local life by enjoying the city's riverside parks, street markets, football games and historic cafes. At the latter, you'll find unique coffee blends and decadent chocolate, as well as elaborate aperitif hours. On the long list of things Turin does right, you can find these three items at the top.

An amazing part of traveling is discovering a new place, but there’s something special about returning to a beloved destination—which also speaks volumes about what makes a place stand out as one of the best.

So what are the places travelers want to return to the most?

Travel insurance specialists InsureandGo recent issued a report ranking the places that travelers are most eager to revisit . To come up with this list, the researchers looked at almost 500 countries, cities and global tourist attractions, then analyzed thousands of comments on Reddit and numerous online reviews to uncover the places that hold the greatest allure for repeat visits.

“There’s no end to the experiences you can have while traveling, with so many different countries and cities around the globe just waiting to be explored,” Russell Wallace, travel insurance expert at InsureandGo, said in a release. “In some instances, however, traveling to the same place repeatedly can in fact, provide a richer experience. Bringing with it a deeper understanding of a destination, along with local insights and maybe even discovering some hidden gems.”

A spring view of Fujiyoshida and Mt. Fuji in Japan, the country that travelers want to visit most.

Topping the list of countries that travelers yearn to revisit is Japan, which is renowned for its rich culture and diverse offerings. With an impressive 324 mentions on Reddit discussions alone, Japan has clearly enchanted visitors with its captivating blend of tradition and modernity, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Kyoto.

Following closely behind Japan are Italy and Spain, two perennial favorites among globetrotters. With 294 and 209 mentions respectively, these Mediterranean gems captivate visitors with their culinary delights, stunning coastlines and architectural wonders.

When it comes to cities, London—with its iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London—reigns supreme as the ultimate destination for repeat visits. Rounding out the top five on the list: Paris, Barcelona and New York City (a tie), then Rome.

When it comes to tourist attractions, Dollywood was named the place travelers want to return to most. Set in the heart of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains, this theme park—partly owned by the legendary Dolly Parton—delights visitors with its unique blend of entertainment, nostalgia and Southern hospitality. Disneyland in California came in at number two. A number of locations tied for the fifth spot on the list, including Yosemite National Park, England’s Blenheim Palace and Tokyo Disneyland.

Where Lonely Planet staffers are traveling this summer

Summer is around the corner in the northern hemisphere, and the team at Lonely Planet is already making (or has made) their travel plans.

If you're wondering where to go and what to do this summer, why not follow one of our leads and discover a new destination or rediscover an old favorite? I, unlike my colleagues, have yet to make plans, so finding out where everyone else is going has lit a fire under me. Likewise, I hope these trip plans inspire you to make some of your own – and that you'll turn to Lonely Planet for help when plotting your next getaway.

Here are just some of the places the staff at Lonely Planet traveling this summer.

"I'm going to a backcountry lodge in Banff . It's only accessible by hiking in. I’ve wanted to do one of these for ages, so this is how I’m celebrating my 40th!" – Jessica Lockhart, Senior Editor, Oceania

Banff and Jasper National Parks have several rustic backcountry lodges surrounded by unparalleled scenery. Each lodge has its own unique setting, hosts and history, but all have simple amenities, minimal (or no) electricity and running water, and welcoming common spaces where travelers can gather to read, play cards or recount the day’s adventures. Advance bookings are key – prices may seem steep, but factor in the included home-cooked meals and freedom from setting up camp or worrying about weather and wildlife, and the cost suddenly becomes worth it.

"I will be visiting Makarska Riviera , including Brela , Makarska, Tucepi and the island of Korčula . The trip is all about promoting Croatia ’s great outdoors , so the itinerary includes kayaking, rafting, buggying and lots of hiking !" – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

Croatia’s tourism peaks between June and August, when the Adriatic’s warm waters charm countless visitors. It’s great fun, though afternoons are roasting hot, the lines at attractions are at their longest, and accommodation costs rise. Inland, temperatures are higher, but crowds are less noticeable. June is the quietest month of high season, but with clear skies, music festivals and the promise of early summer, it's a strong contender for Croatia’s best month.

Ready to plan your trip to Croatia? Choose the right time for your visit with our seasonal guide

"I'm going island hopping  in Greece for four weeks in June. I'll be spending most of my time on Serifos (to start) as it's where the local Greeks holiday  – doing a pottery class, vineyard tour, taking boats to secluded coves, going to cooking school and generally trying to be as fabulous as possible – with additional stays on Santorini and Paros . – Chris Zeiher, Senior Director of Trade Sales and Marketing

Greece is ancient sun-bleached ruins piercing blue skies, the balmy Aegean lapping an endless coastline and a culture alive with passionate music, wonderful cuisine and thrill-seeking activities. Summer is when most travelers choose to explore its countless islands, and June affords the longest days of sunshine, peaking in the second fortnight. It’s also an opportune time for your first, refreshing dip of the summer.

Going to Greece for the first time? Here our our top tips on things to know before you go

"I'm heading to Tuscany and the island of Elba ." – Annie Greenberg, Creative Director  "We are doing a girls' trip to Tuscany." – Aly Yee, Senior Director

Tuscany escapes easy definition. The Apennines – Italy ’s mountainous spine – slope into vineyard-covered rolling hills, which in turn fade into the Mediterranean coast. Late spring to early autumn is when most people visit Tuscany. It’s easy to understand why – days get longer and warmer, the countryside comes to life, outdoor dining opportunities abound, and festivals happen all around.  The island of Elba comes to life during summer, and it’s worth booking accommodation well in advance if you plan to visit in the high season. Elba offers both great beaches and hiking opportunities along its Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE, Elba’s Great Crossing) trail.

"I'm off to car-free Isla Holbox , Mexico for a relaxing beach getaway. I'm planning on horseback riding and wataflow therapy, which I've never done, but should be interesting."  – Serina Patel, Marketing Manager

Isla Holbox (hol-bosh), meaning "black hole" in Mayan, lives up to its name – it's like a portal to one of Mexico’s last unspoiled tropical islands. Golf carts and bicycles serve as the main forms of transportation, and visitors will discover sandy streets, colorful Caribbean buildings, lazing, sun-drunk dogs, and sand so fine its texture is nearly clay. The greenish waters are a unique color from the mixing of ocean currents, and on land there's a mixing too: of locals and tourists, the latter hoping to escape the hubbub of Cancún .

"I'm heading to Granada , Spain for a week or so, maybe getting in Málaga too. This will be my second visit, so I'm hoping to take a more relaxed approach this time and also catch up with friends." – Alison Killilea, Production Support Editor

With serene Islamic architecture, monumental churches, old-school tapas bars and counterculture graffiti art, Granada is Spain’s cultured, creative southern city; a place with a storied past centering on the Alhambra , one of the world’s great human-made wonders. While Granada can be scorching in summer, the city of Málaga is deemed to have the best climate in the country, with about 3000 hours of sun a year – the most in all of Spain.

Seen the Alhambra? Here are Granada's other top experiences

Switzerland

"I'm also going to Zürich , Lucerne , Grindelwald  and Zermatt . I will mostly be hiking and doing lots of outdoorsy activities. My number one priority while I am in Switzerland is to do the highest hiking trail in Europe , the Barrhorn."  – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

Nowhere is perfect, but let’s face it, Switzerland gets pretty darned close. With its supermodel looks, fine weather, easy-peasy public transport , multilingual mindset and penchant for cheese and wine, this is a country where it’s easy to get comfortable – even if it is a bit on the pricey side.  Peak summer in Switzerland is  tip-top , to borrow the Swiss German phrase. Barring the odd storm, it’s nearly always hot and sunny – oppressively so, sometimes, meaning the best place to be is in the cooler air of the high mountains.

The Bahamas

"I'm heading to Eleuthera  in the  Bahamas for our annual family trip – there are 16 of us so it's always an exciting week! With age ranges of 7–70, I can report that we are all excited to do a beach bonfire and barbecue, and go sailing to swim with some piggies." – Amy Nichols, Senior Marketing Manager

The sapphire waters and  sun-soaked sands  of the Bahamas beckon travelers with warm weather that never fades. Just a short flight from the east coast of the US, this island nation is a magnet for repeat visitors and last-minute bookers alike. Eleuthera, however, is a bit tougher to get to, but is well worth the expense and effort if you're looking for vacation bliss. With its pink-sand beaches, Atlantic-battered reefs, weather-warped rock and dense subtropical scrub, this incredibly narrow 109-mile (175km-long) crescent also offers boutique hotels, revered surf breaks and some fabulous restaurants.

Can't decide where to go in the Bahamas? We can help with this guide to the best places to visit

"I'm heading to Naples , Florida  on a family vacation for 2 weeks. I'm planning to relax mostly, with lots of trips to the beach and eating good food! But I'm hoping to take a trip to the Everglades , too." – Aoife Breslin, Publicity and Marketing Coordinator

For upscale romance and the prettiest, most serene city beach in southwest Florida, come to Naples, the Gulf Coast's answer to Palm Beach. The soft white sand is backed only by narrow dunes and half-hidden mansions. More than that, though, Naples is a cultured, sophisticated town, unabashedly stylish and privileged but also welcoming and fun-loving. With spectacular year-round sunshine, there's certainly no bad time to visit Florida . Summers can be pretty hot, but you'll probably spend less on lodging than the winter or summer months.

Traveling to Florida on a budget? We've got some money-saving tips for you

Massachusetts

"My friends and I are going to Martha’s Vineyard , Massachusetts in July. We’re planning a Midsommar -esque garden dinner one night and will spend the rest of our time beach hopping and strolling through Edgartown." – Ann Douglas Lott, Associate Editor

Martha's Vineyard remains untouched by the kind of rampant commercialism found on the mainland – there's not a single chain restaurant or cookie-cutter motel in sight. Sunny skies and consistently hot weather make July and August the best time for a traditional beach holiday with sunning, swimming and sand-digging. The tradeoff, of course, is that July and August are the months everyone goes to the Vineyard and it's likely to be jam-packed, so plan ahead.

Want to see more of Massachusetts? Here are the best road-trip routes

"My family is headed to Northern Michigan this summer. We're excited to paddleboard to a shipwreck, relax on the beach and sail on Lake Michigan. We'll hike and run down all the sand dunes, explore cute artsy towns full of galleries and good eats." – Sarah Stocking, Digital Editor

Summertime buzzes with travelers when draws like the  Great Lakes , charming islands and unspoiled wilderness are at their most accessible. Michigan’s high season kicks off on Memorial Day (the last Monday in May). Ferries start to depart more regularly to popular spots and while summer-only establishments lift their shutters. The weather is mostly sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging from 76°F (24°C) to 85°F (29°C). This means lots of summer-only outdoor activities begin.

There are loads of great beaches in Michigan. Here's our guide to the very best

North Carolina

"My wife and I are going to Kure Beach, North Carolina for the 4th of July for five days — my favorite things to do there are take a yoga class on the beach with Kure Beach Yoga (no need to bring a mat, bring a towel!), watch the sunrise from our hotel (The Lighthouse Inn, a very laid-back and recently revamped spot right by the water so you don’t have to stress about parking, which is awful every summer), and see if we can find the boardwalk cat, Bibi." – Rachel Lewis, Senior Social Media Manager

The height of summer in North Carolina is beach time, and with 322 miles (518km) of ocean shoreline reaching from the  Outer Banks  in the north to the  South Carolina  border in the south (and 12,000 miles/19,000km of estuarine coastline along the way),  North Carolina has plenty of beaches to choose from . Kure Beach has 6 miles (10km) of protected shoreline as well as lagoons teeming with wildlife that you can explore by renting a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard.

Rhode Island

"I'm off to Newport , Rhode Island for Memorial Day Weekend and planning on going to restaurants, wineries, mansion tours, walking and hiking." – Serina Patel, Marketing Manager

It may be the yachting capital of the world, but you don’t need nautical stripes – or a summer cottage – to enjoy the seaside retreat of Newport, Rhode Island. With its fresh briny air, expansive sea views and stunning bays, it's obvious why cityfolk continue to follow in the footsteps of the American industrialists here. Enjoy a taste of the good life by touring Newport's Gilded Age mansions built in the late 1800s, taking sailing lessons, or going wine tasting.

Vacations are a lot of fun, but it’s easy to spend too much money , leaving a costly trail in the wake of your good time. However, there are a surprising number of fun things to do, eat and see for as little as $20 or less, if you know how to find them.

“A lot of times it’s the simple, under-the-radar experiences that create the most meaningful memories anyway,” according to Anjali Chawla, a family travel blogger and founder of Travel Melodies .

“The best part about traveling cheap is it forces you to engage with communities in an authentic way,” she said. “It’s not about flashy tourist attractions, but slowing down to discover little cafes, street artists and out-of-the-way viewpoints that give you a true insider experience.”

She and other travel experts explain the best ways to spend $20 on vacation .

Food should be your first choice if you only have $20 to spare, according toDavid Ciccarelli, the CEO and founder of the vacation rental platform Lake .

“Choose a popular food truck, market vendor or local eatery, which tends to be much cheaper and more authentic than tourist-oriented restaurants,” he urged.

Local Markets

On the topic of food, Elaine Warren, a travel expert, founder and CEO of The Family Cruise Companion , suggested checking out local markets for snacks with your $20.

“Cruise food is fine but you miss out seeing how locals eat. Markets have goodies like filled pastries in the Caribbean or meat on sticks in Asia. Try the real local foods — it’s interesting and not too pricey. Speaking of tastes, another low-cost option is stopping at coffee shops or cafes…You can get specialty drinks and feel the local vibe.”

Then, once your belly is full, go check out museums with free admission, Ciccarelli said. “Spend the cash on public transit; you may even have some left to spare at the end of a culture-filled day. Or, go on a walking tour and check out local art, sculptures, and architecture, stopping for a snack along the way.”

Outdoor Experiences

For any vacationer with $20 to spend, Jonas Zook Jr., an Airbnb host with Sweden Valley Cabins , recommended investing in memorable outdoor experiences.

“For instance, Cherry Springs State Park offers exceptional stargazing, often for free or a nominal park entry fee. This aligns perfectly with spending little but gaining a lot — connecting with nature and enjoying spectacular celestial views,” he said.

Similarly, in the surrounding Susquehannock State Forest near him, there are numerous hiking trails, which are accessible at no cost except perhaps for parking.

“These trails not only offer physical activity but also expose travelers to breathtaking natural scenery and wildlife, maximizing the value gained from an inexpensive or free activity. Moreover, the mental and physical benefits of spending time in nature provide a substantial return on a minimal investment,” Zook Jr. said.

Local Community and Cultural Events

Zook Jr. also suggested that if you’re interested in cultural experiences, “Local community events such as small-town festivals or markets can be incredibly enriching without denting your wallet.”

These events often feature local crafts, foods and sometimes free performances, offering a taste of local life and community spirit.

“My experience hosting near such a vibrant outdoor and community-focused area has shown me that the most rewarding travel experiences often come from engaging authentically with the area’s natural and social offerings, all while on a budget.”

While lodging can be one of the bigger expenses when traveling, if you’re traveling outside of the U.S., many countries offer hostels, essentially shared lodgings where you might sleep in a dorm-like setting, for very little, according to Alexandra Dubakova, travel expert and chief marketing officer of FreeTour.com .

“It depends on where you are going for vacation. For example, if you were visiting Bolivia, you could spend $20 on a hostel, $9 on a tasty meal … and spend the remaining in a minibus across town,” she said.

Likewise, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, you can get accommodation in a hostel starting from $5, street food at $1 or at a hotel for $5, and you can visit museums, markets, etc. she explained.

Many cities offer these kinds of deals on hostels.

Public Transit Day Passes

Another tip Chawla recommended is taking advantage of public transit day passes.

“Whether it’s the buses, trains or subway, most big cities have passes available for short-term tourists that allow unlimited rides in one day. For around the $20 mark or less, you open up so many affordable sightseeing possibilities,” she said.

She shared that this is how her family has been able to cover twice as much ground in a day in big cities like Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago.

Museums, Landmarks and Monuments

Additionally, you’d be surprised how much free or inexpensive culture you can soak up in a place too, Chawla said.

Many museums, landmarks and monuments have discounted or even free admission days that only require a bit of online research beforehand, she explained.

“Just $10 towards the entrance fee means my kids get an education while we’re traveling. It’s amazing what you learn wandering around taking in the exhibits and history. I always leave feeling like I understand a destination so much better after a few hours in its cultural attractions.”

Don’t Forget What’s Free

You can also save your $20 by taking advantage of some free options, according to Rob Burley, a travel tour operator expert and the founder of GP Traveller .

He recommended free “culture days” at local museums, zoos and attractions.

“During my last trip to Washington D.C., I was amazed at how much history and education I absorbed across multiple Smithsonian museums — all without spending a dime. Another top recommendation is free walking tours. Not only do you see the sites, but you gain priceless insider perspectives from local volunteers who share their city with pride.”

He also urged people not to forget about libraries.

“On rainy days they’ve entertained me for hours with movies, books and more. And in summer, public parks worldwide put on wonderful free concerts and shows perfect for taking in while meeting locals,” Burley said.

Town squares or parks sometimes have live music from street performers, Warren added.

“Even historical sites may have outside areas open to all, so you can see nice buildings or ruins at no cost. And don’t forget cheap postcards to send friends pictures from your trip,” she concluded.

Whether it’s food, transit or culture, there are many ways to spend a day traveling on just $20 if you get a bit creative.
