Hubert Estate

The best wineries in the Yarra Valley

Visit these cellar doors in the Yarra Valley, and make sure you buy some wine to take home

Cassidy Knowlton

There's a reason the Yarra Valley is one of the most visited wine regions in the world. It's only an hour from Melbourne, making it the perfect day trip or weekend away. The region specialises in chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, which also happen to make perfect sparkling wine. But if you know where to look, you'll also find less common varietals, like nebbiolo, savagnin and chenin blanc.

There are 160 wineries to try in the region, from tiny mum-and-pop operations to giant foreign-owned behemoths. Don't know where to start? These are our favourite wineries in the Yarra Valley right now. And if you can't find a deso, book yourself in for one of these guided tours .

Yarra Valley wineries we love

Hubert Estate

1.  Hubert Estate

Hubert Estate is the love child of the Ryan Hospitality Group ( The Prince , Mitchelton Winery , Nagambie Brewery & Distillery) and one of the Yarra Valley 's longest-standing producers, St Hubert's. The winery and cellar door is set to become the region's newest must-visit destination, with a complete redesign of St Hubert's existing footprint – transforming the stunning site into a dual-level estate. The reimagining of the venue is thanks to notable architectural and interior design studio, Cera Stribley. Hubert Estate now encompasses a modern Australian and Euro-inspired restaurant (Quarters), Indigenous art gallery ( Hubert Gallery of Art ), event space (Harriett), cellar door, and boutique wine store (Notes).

Innocent Bystander

2.  Innocent Bystander

  • Restaurants
  • Healesville

Innocent Bystander is conveniently located across the street from fellow Healesville winery Giant Steps . In fact, the two wineries used to be housed under the same roof but since the businesses (amicably) split up in early 2017, Innocent Bystander took over what was once the White Rabbit Brewery. In a nod to its predecessor, Innocent Bystander's stand-alone venue has a beer hall atmosphere, with its prosecco to Syrah served out of temperature-controlled draught taps. Punters can order a carafe or a flight of wines that come in measuring beakers straight out of science class. The food menu is centred around wood-fired pizzas and share dishes made for nibbling while diners sample the moderately-priced wines.

Fin x Cré

3.  Fin x Cré

  • Yarra Valley

In March 2021, the trio behind lo-fi labels Fin Wine and Cré Wine opened a cellar door/eatery in Dixons Creek. Here, you can taste your way through wines, ciders and piquettes made with "minimal faffery"  — also known as lo-fi or minimal intervention beverages.  There’s a tasting area up back, a big wall of wine and a few tables, with much of the seating outside (smart). Opening hours are limited to two weekends a month during the winter months, with more frequent service during the spring.

Helen and Joey Estate

4.  Helen and Joey Estate

There is a large cellar door and tasting room inside Helen and Joey Estate, but if the weather is good, the best seats in the house are outside on the terrace, overlooking the vines and gently rolling hills. If the winery isn't slammed, you might get lucky enough to be able to work your way through the wines on tasting in this spot. If you'd like to nosh as you sip, you can also get snacks and charcuterie, and you can of course buy a bottle or two to enjoy in your primo location – plus a few to take home.

Rob Dolan Wines

5.  Rob Dolan Wines

  • Warrandyte South

The winery uses fruit from all over Victoria to make a cracking range of cool-climate wines, from the entry-level, fruit-forward True Colours range through the White Label, Black Label and premium Signature Series drops. There are the traditional Yarra Valley pinot noir and chardonnay varietals here (including a spectacular malolactic fermentation chardy), as well as gorgeous cabernet sauvignons, which is a varietal with a long history in the Yarra Valley.

Pimpernel Vineyards

6.  Pimpernel Vineyards

Mark and Fiona Horrigan, who run Pimpernel, take their winemaking seriously, and their drops reflect the characteristics of the grapes. They are also serious about terroir – so serious, in fact, that Mark's mother pocketed a couple of limestones from a pinot noir vineyard in Burgandy. When they returned to Australia, Mark had the stones analysed and subsequently buried more than 250 tonnes of similar crushed limestone in his own vineyard. The pinot noir grapes that grow above it produce some of the best pinot the Yarra Valley has to offer. Fruit is picked by hand, and little is done to it to interfere with the natural fermentation process.

Dominique Portet

7.  Dominique Portet

Though the Dominique Portet winery was only founded in 2000, it's the project of a ninth-generation winemaker from Bordeaux. The Dominique Portet winery in the rolling hills of Yarra Valley offers a cellar door open daily, and the restaurant serves country-style lunches (think snack platters, cheese, charcuterie and even snails) ideal for a post-wine tasting meal. Taste the Fontaine rosé, one that’s an exceptional berry-driven summery blend of merlot, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, and a steal at $26 a bottle.

Oakridge Wines

8.  Oakridge Wines

  • price 3 of 4

Oakridge Wines is a family-owned winery in Yarra Valley that is gaining renown for its restaurant. The kitchen, which is headed by chef Aaron Brodie, produces dishes highlighting produce from the kitchen garden and local growers. Guests can enjoy a meal matched with a selection of wines exclusive to the Oakridge restaurant ( which was our Restaurant of the Year in 2019 ), or simply take in the view of the stunning vineyard – tastings overlook a pretty gorgeous vista.

Many Hands Winery

9.  Many Hands Winery

Tasting your way around the Yarra Valley is hungry work, and there will come a time in your day when you need to fill your stomach with something more substantial than wine tastings. When that time comes, you should kindly ask your deso to point the car in the direction of Many Hands Winery, a small producer that excels at both wine and Italian food. Tastings cost $10 here, redeemable against a bottle (and you are quite likely to want to buy at least one to bring home). You can also drink a bottle or two while you get amongst wood-fired pizzas, garlic prawns, an antipasto platter or other Italian snacks and meals.

Yering Farm

10.  Yering Farm

This winery doesn't take itself too seriously, but it is serious about its product. The entry-level Farmyard series is a very approachable range, featuring playful labels of colourful animals. It is fruit-forward, easy-drinking wine, the kind you can crack at a barbecue and drink way too much of. Tastings here are $5, and the chardonnay and late harvest dessert wine are particular standouts at Yering Farm. But this being a former fruit farm, fruit is still a big part of what Yering Farm does. Yering offers what it calls 'syder', or pink lady apple cider. It's crisp, perfectly balanced between sweet and tart, and tastes just like biting into a perfectly ripe pink lady apple.

Maddens Rise

11.  Maddens Rise

The blink-and-you'll-miss-it shed that serves as the cellar door for Maddens Rise does not have a fancy restaurant or assembly line of tastings. Instead, you'll find a simple but beautifully finished shed (it was filled with daffodils when we visited), stunning views and a handwritten A4 sheet of paper detailing the wines on offer and their prices. Tastings cost $10, and you should absolutely taste everything here. For an example of the kind of winery this is, look no further than the sparkling rosé. It's a delicious combination of chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, fermented in French oak barrels and spending another nine months on lees in the bottle, and made using the Méthode Champenoise. It's no slouch and has a considerable pedigree, but the winemakers here call it simply 'pink fizz' and say it's uncomplicated, delicious, and perfect for any time drinking. We agree.

See What Our Guests Are Saying

Tripadvisor, june 2023.

Vinetrekker arranged an excellent tour of a mixture of established and newer wineries in the Yarra Valley. It was good to visit some hidden gems as well. Lunch at Yering Estate was excellent and the wine & cheese pairing at DeBortoli was a great ending to a memorable day. Safe & clean, organised, on time – no hesitation to recommend Vinetrekker.

This was a wonderful experience. I attended the tour as a solo guest and I felt very welcome and comfortable. Paul was a great host and ensured his guests comfort and needs were his highest priorities. Paul’s knowledge of the area and its history is exceptional, making the experience even more enjoyable. Not only was the wine tasting an amazing experience (with not one bad wine tasted) the food was to die for. From start to finish all of my expectations were exceeded and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Plentyoflight

Tripadvisor, may 2023.

Awesome tour. The company Vinetrekker was proactive and flexible with my pickup and drop off. The tour guide Shane was very friendly and knowledgeable about both the history of the area and wine. The other guests were also friendly which made the trip extra special. We visited a variety of traditional, modern, and edgy wineries for a wide variety of experiences. The landscapes were gorgeous and overall it was a fantastic way to spend a day outside Melbourne. Don’t miss it!

Thoroughly enjoyed Yarra Valley Wine Day Tour. Could not have picked a better tour and tour guide (Rob) to show case the beautiful Yarra Valley. Perfect combination of great wine and food. The tour lived up to its reputation of a high ranking experience. Outstanding value for money. So many wonderful and memorable experiences. Thank you.

My partner and I had the best time on Paul’s wine tour. Paul was a great host, not only did he drive us from vineyard to vineyard but he knew a lot about the wines, the areas we were in and the different types of wine each vineyard had to offer – to our taste.

The 5 vineyards were amazing and the knowledge from both the sommeliers, Paul (& to our luck a couple of vineyard owners!) made the whole experience even more amazing. Lunch was very good quality and the wine pairing made it even better.

The best winery tours Melbourne has to offer

In a city where food and wine is celebrated, we think these are the best winery tours Melbourne has to offer.

The best part is, it’s not only wine that makes these tours special, but the local produce and gourmet food as well. For a great winery destination near Melbourne we recommend the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula. Both have an outstanding range of wineries to choose from, and they offer great opportunities to taste the local produce of the region.

We guarantee a winery tour will be one of the highlights of your trip to Melbourne!

Winery regions near Melbourne

Melbournians are spoilt for choice when it comes to great wine regions near the city. This means visitors are the same – there’s a great choice of winery tours for anyone visiting Melbourne.

Yarra Valley

Melbourne’s most famous wine region is the Yarra Valley. Just a 45 minute drive from the city, and you are in a vibrant wine-making region, with plenty of delicious local produce made here as well. It’s the location where the first grape-vines were planted in Victoria, and it is the most popular choice for winery tours from Melbourne.

Highlights of the Yarra Valley wine region

  • Easily accessed from Melbourne – great for a one day tour
  • Over 70 wineries to choose from
  • Region is known for pinot noir and chardonnay varieties
  • Great valley scenery, particularly in autumn when vine leaves change colour
  • Local producers include cheese makers, chocolatiers and fruit growers

Mornington Peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula has established itself as a booming wine region in Victoria. Just one hour drive from Melbourne, the region pairs some great vineyards with vibrant coastal scenery. There are more than 50 cellar doors to visit and some excellent restaurants and cafes serving fresh local produce.

  • Highlights of the Mornington Peninsula wine region
  • Boutique wineries making for a more intimate experience
  • Spectacular coastal scenery
  • Local restaurant and cafes
  • Renowned for pinot noir wines

Smaller wine regions in Victoria

Victoria is home to 21 different wine regions, meaning there are plenty of opportunities to taste your favourite drop in cellar doors around the state. The Grampians wine region has many smaller cellar doors, dotted around the foothills of the spectacular Grampians mountain range. Rutherglen is famous for bold red and fortified wines, with some great local prudence on offer as well. Heathcote is becoming known for its Shiraz with some brilliant family-run wineries offering a great cellar door experience.

Our Yarra Valley Gourmet Wine Tour from Melbourne

Our Go West Yarra Valley Gourmet Wine Tour is designed to highlight the best wines and local produce in Melbourne’s most famous wine region.

We start the day with an exclusive farm gate visit at Yarra Farm Fresh.  At this boutique, third-generation orchard, we’ll sample a range of seasonal fruits and other local produce. We will also learn a little about the wide range of farm-fresh fruits grown on the property.

Next, we travel to one of the valley’s true icons, Balgownie Estate where we’ll enjoy a tasting from their extensive range of quality wines. We’ll learn how to swirl, sniff, and slurp like true connoisseurs while tasting some of the very finest cool climate wines.

The amazing produce at the Yarra Valley Dairy will truly melt in your mouth. They specialise in soft cheeses and fetas – made right there in the century-old milking shed on the property. The cheeses here are truly stunning and will have your tastebuds working overtime!

Our gourmet lunch is at the renowned Rochford Wines where our guests can choose from four different main meals – each using fresh, in-season local produce – with a glass of wine and tea or coffee. After lunch, take some time to explore the gift shop, or perhaps climb the spiral staircase to enjoy the panoramic views from Rochford’s famous lookout tower.

Next up, we make our way to Yering Station, where Victoria’s first grape vines were planted back in 1838. This winery is a member of the Australian Tourism Hall of Fame and a tasting of their exceptional wine range is not to be missed.

To finish the tour we’ll visit the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie where you’re welcomed with an exclusive chocolate tasting, displays of thousands of premium chocolates, and expert chocolatiers hard at work handcrafting their chocolate creations.

You can sit back and relax on the return journey to Melbourne, knowing that you have enjoyed the very best that a day tour to the Yarra Valley has to offer.

A private winery tour to the Yarra Valley

If you like the sound of taking a tour to the Yarra Valley wine region, but would prefer to tailor the itinerary yourself – we can help you out! Our private tours can cater for 1 to 100 guests and can be completely arranged to meet your needs.

Previously we have hosted wine clubs, wedding parties and individual guests on our private Yarra Valley Tours from Melbourne.

Do you prefer beer instead of wine? Ask us about the numerous micro-breweries in the Yarra Valley, or maybe visit Four Pillars Gin Distillery, recently named one of the world’s top 10 distilleries!

Or would you prefer a stronger focus on wine than on local produce? We can adapt our itinerary to ensure more opportunities to sniff, slurp, and swill.

You might even like to add some Australian wildlife to your Yarra Valley visit. Meeting many Australian animals at Healesville Sanctuary, located just a short drive from many great wineries is a great way to spend the morning.

Our Mornington Peninsula private winery tours

If you like the idea of visiting wineries and cellar doors in the Mornington Peninsula region, we would be happy to tailor a tour to suit your needs. We can customise your itinerary, timings, and inclusions to suit your specific preferences, to ensure that your experience is both unique and truly memorable.

We will help you create a personalised tour with stops where you want them. Choose from wine tastings, beer tastings and gourmet lunch options.

You can even explore further on the Mornington Peninsula and include The Enchanted Maze and Adventure Garden, Peninsula Hot Springs or the Arthurs Seat Eagle on your itinerary. There are also some fantastic beaches and coastal lookouts if you’d like a little bit of sight-seeing along with your wine tastings.

Why you should take a winery tour from Melbourne

For a relaxing day out, tasting great wines and fresh local produce, taking a tour is a great option. No need for a designated driver, or trying to navigate around a new destination – we will do the work for you. From choosing the best experiences – wine tastings, local produce, gourmet lunches – to providing you with a great commentary on the region, we will ensure you have a fantastic experience. You can take a winery tour from Melbourne that is memorable for all the right reasons.

DISCOVER THE BEAUTIFUL MORNINGTON PENINSULA WINERIES

If you like wine, you’ve come to the right place. With Western Port Bay on one side and Port Phillip Bay on the other, the peninsula is a great place to make cool-climate wines, especially chardonnays and pinot noirs. It only takes an hour to drive from Melbourne to Mornington Peninsula.

There are more than 200 vineyards, 60 wineries, and at least 50 cellar doors on the Mornington Peninsula. Most are near Red Hill, Red Hill South, and Main Ridge, with smaller groups in Moorooduc and Tuerong in the north and Balnarring and Merricks near Western Port Bay.

Even though the area hasn’t been making wine as long as the Yarra Valley, it’s quickly becoming one of the best in Australia. There’s nothing more relaxing than having lunch at a winery and then walking through the grapevines while sipping a glass of wine.

ENJOY THE ELEGANT YARRA GLEN WINERIES

Some of Victoria’s best wines come from Yarra Glen Wineries. Yarra Glen Wineries are known for their great cellar door experiences and wine tours. You’d be crazy not to check out this pearl of paradise.

Different wineries have different tastes and experiences because they are at different altitudes. A glass of wine from two vineyards might taste the same as two glasses from vineyards thousands of miles apart. Because this region has a unique way of making wine, going there for a wine tour is a great way to spend a holiday.

The cool weather gives the wine a refreshing acidity, and the high-quality growth of vines that date back to the early 1800s makes the wine taste even better. Australia loves Yarra Glen wines because the soils and conditions in the area are so good. Most of Yarra Glen’s foundations are made of ancient Cambrian soils. These red soils are rich in calcium and made of greenstone, which is very good at holding water. The water stays in the ground all year, giving it to the vines and keeping the grapes plump and juicy. This lets the wine’s maturity and complexity shine through.

EXPERIENCE THE BEST WINERY TOURS

On one of your Yarra Valley Winery Tours, try some Shiraz. If you are looking for Healesville Wineries,  Ami Tours is the best option for you.

About the Yarra Valley wine region

The Yarra Valley is Australia’s oldest and most respected wine region. Vines were first planted in the valley in 1838 by the Scottish Ryrie brothers, who established Yering Station, which is still operational today. The valley’s cool climate and fertile soils proved to be well-suited to grape growing, and by the late 19th century, the Yarra Valley was producing some of the finest wines in Australia.

The early 20th century saw a decline in the Yarra Valley’s wine industry due in part to the phylloxera epidemic that devastated vineyards around the world. However, the industry began to recover in the 1960s, and by the 1980s, the Yarra Valley was once again producing world-class wines.

Today, the Yarra Valley is home to over 60 wineries, producing a wide range of premium wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. The valley is also a popular tourist destination, with many wineries offering tours and tastings.

Wine Tours in the Yarra Valley with Melbourne Valley Wine Tours

There are many different wine tours available in the Yarra Valley, ranging from half-day tours to full-day tours. Some tours focus on a particular wine style, such as Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, while others offer a more general overview of the valley’s wines. Most tours include visits to 3 or 4 wineries, where you will have the opportunity to taste wines and learn about the winemaking process.

Trips from Melbourne

Many wine tours depart from Melbourne, making it easy to visit the Yarra Valley for a day. The drive from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley is about an hour on our 15 or 25-seater tour bus.

Best Wineries in the Yarra Valley

Domaine Chandon: This French-inspired winery is known for its sparkling wines. They also produce a small range of still wines, including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Oakridge Winery: This winery is known for its cool-climate wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. They also produce a small range of fortified wines.

Seville Estate: This winery is known for its biodynamic wines. They produce a range of wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz.

De Bortoli: This family-owned winery is one of the largest in the Yarra Valley. They produce a wide range of wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz.

How Far is Yarra Valley from Melbourne?

Yarra Valley is just about an hour’s drive from Melbourne.

In roughly 60 minutes, you can go from the bustling city streets to rolling vineyards and serene countryside.

The journey usually involves 30 minutes on the freeway and another 30 minutes cruising through scenic routes filled with vineyards and farmlands.

Guide to the Best Wine Tours in Australia from Melbourne

Getting there.

Seeing as Australia is an island, you’re likely going to arrive there by plane. There are 4 airports in and around Melbourne: Melbourne International, Avalon, Essendon, and Moorabbin. However, you’ll likely fly into either Melbourne or Avalon.

If you’re flying in from the US, you’ll be arriving at Melbourne Airport. Located around 20 km from downtown Melbourne, you can access the city either by bus, car, or rideshare. SkyBus operates every 10 minutes usually, and is the most economic method to get there. Alternatively, you could take a train or tram if you’re coming from Southern Cross Station.

For a quicker method, there are always taxis lined up outside the main airport entrance, so they’re easy to access. If you’d like to plan ahead for how much you’ll be tentatively paying, check out this online fare calculator .

Getting Around

Melbourne is a really easy, pleasant city to move around in. This is largely due to the city’s grid layout, which makes it simple to figure out, even if it’s your first time in Melbourn.

The city’s buses operate often to major hubs like commercial shopping centers, schools, hospitals, sports and concert venues, entertainment-heavy neighborhoods, and more. If you’d like to check out the area outside Melbourne, try their V/Line service which will take you to nearby towns and beautiful scenery.

Operating within the outer suburbs and Flinders Street Station located in Melbourne proper, you’ll likely find great use for their city loop. The underground system connects 5 stations located in the central business district: Southern Cross Station, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament, and Flinders Street.

Trams are also very convenient, and you can head to one of the stops which display maps, route numbers, and a timetable so you always know where and when to go. As is typically the case, the route numbers are shown at the front of the tram on a screen. If you use it within the downtown area, you don’t even need to pay!

Taxi/Rideshare

Taxi, Uber, Taxify, and DiDi are all available in Melbourne, and the latter two are highly recommended. In particular, Taxify, tends to have really good customer service, with many drivers offering water bottles, reading material, and more extras.

Taxis are usually either yellow, silver, or white, and are very easy to spot. Hailing a taxi isn’t difficult here, but you can also take one by heading to a signposted spot or a set location.

If you’d like to see the city by foot, it’s quite easy to do as well. Melbourne is overall a very safe and friendly city, with well-kept walkways. This is one of the best ways to explore, as you’ll get to see buildings and sites up close and perhaps stop at locations you wouldn’t otherwise when traveling by car or public transport.

Where to Stay

Melbourne is a very culture-rich city with people from all over the world, incredible food, beautiful beaches, and much more.

City Center

You’ll likely be staying in the downtown area due to its convenience and close proximity to most of the main tourist attractions. Located right along the beautiful Yarra River, you’ll find tons of cute bars, restaurants, shops, markets, arcades, and so many other fun things to do.

Thanks to the excellent public transport in the area, you’ll be able to take trains, trams, buses, etc. anywhere.

This hipster beach suburb is great if you’re a music lover. It contains 3 of the city’s best music and cultural venues: Palais Theatre, Hotel Esplanade, and The Price of Wales Hotel. They’re all easy to walk between, and this area is easy to walk or bike around, as well. Full of cute cafes, it’s a nice spot to leisurely stroll around and enjoy the local vibe. Not to mention, the over a century-old Luna Park amusement park is here if you love adrenaline!

Located along the southern side of Yarra River, this is the place to be if you like upscale and classy. World-class bistros, wine bars, dinner cruises, and more await you here, with wonderful waterside views. It’s close to everything, and easy to navigate between Southbank and the rest of the downtown area.

If you’re bringing the whole family along for the ride, this is the perfect neighborhood to stay in. Located just a few tram stops away from the city center, it’s right on a beautiful harbor and marina. If you love running, biking, or just strolling around, it’s a fantastic way to get some fresh air and clear the mind.

Not only that, it has a massive shopping center where you can go ice skating, see a movie, play in the arcade, mini-golf, and more.

Restaurants and Eating Out

Cutler + Co. – This is one of the most quintessentially “Melbourne” restaurants in the city. It perfectly mixes Australian outback with a more bistro, upscale twist. You have to try the rousted flounder or their massive ribeye. If you like this one, also check out Cumulus Inc. or Supernormal, by the same chef.

Cookie – Who doesn’t love some good Thai food? Cookie offers some of the most flavorful, memorable Thai food in the country. The location is also a blast, as half of it is a bar.

Kaprica – This place is great for a fun night out or just stopping by for some delicious pizza on the way back to the hotel. It’s often pretty packed with locals, but it’s perfect for enjoying wine in a tumbler and cheesy pasta while chatting it up with guests.

Chin Chin – Melbourne also has incredible Vietnamese food, and Chin Chin is at the top of the food chain. Be prepared for a line if you end up going after 7 pm.

Tonka – This upscale Indian location is another excellent date night spot. They feature many of the Indian classics, like tandoori chicken, but their highlights are really twists on classics. Duck korma with apple and beetroot is one of the most popular examples.

Café Di Stasio – You can’t go to Melbourne and not try this one. It’s upscale Italian that you only take someone to if you love them. Their pastas are life-changing, and is not a common place for tourists.

Pacific Seafood BBQ House – This unique restaurant is based off of traditional Chinese food, with an Australian influence. Salt-and-pepper calamari and hot pots are must-haves here.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Melbourne has a very interesting, thriving nightlife and there really is something for everybody. Locals are known to party hard and enjoy life, and that’s evident when you go out here!

Nightclubs – La Di Da across King Street is a lively place known for its 3 different rooms full of banging dance music. Loop Project is a more trendy spot with very tropical house music and the like, offering delicious craft cocktails and beautiful outdoor spaces. Revolver Upstairs is a place perfect for anyone – no matter your age or background. If you like underground music, this is the spot to be.

Late-Night Diners – If you love whiskey or beer, you have to stop at Boilermaker. Sip on some rarities while trying their expertly-curated charcuterie plates. Cumulus Up is kind of like a hip wine bar perfect for deep conversation or people watching.

Bars – 1806 is located on Exhibition Street, and is where you should head if you’re serious about the art of crafting cocktails. Having been around for almost 100 years now, they have a premium wine list and cave-aged cheddar and gouda. Bar Ampere arguably has the best spirits in town, and takes you back in time with their menu and atmosphere.

Pilgrim offers gorgeous riverside views, park bench setups and an incredible selection of mostly-vegetarian options. Cabinet Bar is a very cozy spot perfect for enjoying some halloumi sliders or fresh cheeses illuminated by romantic candles.

  Charlton’s Karaoke Bar

Everyone needs to try karaoke at least once, and Charlton’s is one of the best karaoke bars in the world. Delicious cocktails and mocktails run in high supply, and the friendly staff only adds to the great experience.

The Comic’s Lounge

If you want to get some laughs in, this one offers some of the best local and international touring comedians.

Bowling is always a fun time, whether you go with your significant other or a big group. Not only that, but Strike has karaoke, laser tag, and escape rooms!

Dinner Cruise

Located right on the water, we can’t recommend the Spirit of Melbourne Cruise enough! Not only do they serve up a delicious 4-course dinner menu, their music, views, and customer service is top-notch.

If you’re someone who enjoys going to places that have “seasons”, you’ll enjoy Melbourne. Warm summers, gorgeous springs, mildly chilly autumns, and crisp winters, it’s varied yet never extreme. However, it can get pretty windy and rainy in the winters which make it a bit annoying to walk around and enjoy Melbourne the way it should be.

Attractions

Royal Botanic Gardens – Established in the mid-1840s, these massive gardens cover Melbourne and Cranbourne boundaries. Covering a whopping 38 hectares, you’ll be able to see over 10,000 species of plants, offering a relaxing spot to just sit and enjoy the sound of the birds singing.

In the summer, the live theater offers musical entertainment and the moonlight cinema is set up in the evening.

National Gallery of Victoria – Known as the oldest public art gallery in the entire country, it displays over 70,000 works crossing Europe, Asian, Oceania, and the Americas.

Block Arcade – Located in Collins Street, this cool place has a mosaic floor, boutique shops, and little details that will make you feel like you’re in another century. Here, you’ll find everything from delicious chocolates to vintage clothing and jewelry, to charming tearooms and cafes.

Melbourne Cricket Ground – Known as the sporting capitol of Australia, Melbourne has a ton of sports fans. The MCG has a 100,000-person capacity and is considered one of the most historic, greatest stadiums in the country. Make sure to visit the National Sports Museum, too!

Skydeck at Eureka Tower – For some of the best views of the city, head up to the 91-story Eureka Tower in Southbank. The Skydeck is located on the 88 th floor, and even has a glass room with a glass bottom for extra adrenaline.

Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building – Housing all kinds of interesting artifacts, this museum contains fascinating pieces of Australian and worldwide history. Some of the most popular exhibits include the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Phar Lap racehorse, and Children’s Gallery.

City Circle Tram Tour – Get on the City Circle Tram, and see some of the most beautiful and interesting sites around Melbourne. This free method of transportation is obviously very budget-friendly and you can hop on and off at notable places like the Parliament House, Old Treasury Building, Princess Theatre, and more.

Captain Cook’s Cottage, Fitzroy Gardens – Literally brought to Melbourne from Captain James Cook’s hometown of Yorkshire, England, it offers insight into how he lived and all of his adventures locally and around the world. Nearby, you’ll see the mission-style conservatory, which is surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

River Cruise – These are such a blast to take! Located along Southbank, cruises are going all the time, day or night.

Parliament House – You have to take a tour at the spot where Australia’s first federal parliament met starting in 1901. As one of the country’s oldest buildings, it was constructed with a luxe gold leaf interior, complete with opulent chandeliers, and a beautiful mosaic floor.

Phillip Island – This island is a sanctuary for a variety of native Australian wildlife. It’s best known for the penguins. Be sure to do a Phillip Island penguin parade tour !

  • Stand on left, walk on right. When on an escalator, if you’d like to pass, you should do so on the right side.
  • Go walking. This is undoubtedly the best way to see Melbourne. There are also plenty of walking tours to take advantage of.
  • Some bars close early. It depends, but many close anywhere from 1 to 3 pm. Make sure you check beforehand or on the outside of the restaurant, for the hours listed.
  • Try the coffee. Known as the coffee capital of Australia, Melbourne has some world-class stuff.
  • If you’re looking to surf, go outside of Melbourne. The local beaches don’t really have waves, which is great for tranquil hangouts but not so much cruising a barrel.
  • Consider the seasons. As we’ve mentioned briefly, during the wintertime, it can get quite cold and frigid. Due to being right on the water, it gets really windy. In the summertime, it’s perfect for walking around and exploring. Spring is also beautiful, with nice weather and flowers blooming everywhere.

The must-visit Victorian wine region you’ve probably never heard of

Lyndsay Sharp, the Auckland-born owner of Leura Park Estate, along with her husband David, has become a prominent figure on the Bellarine wine scene. Photo / Leura Park Estate

Most people come to the Bellarine Peninsula southwest of Melbourne for the popular surf coast, but two Kiwis are helping put this lesser-known wine region on the map, writes Kirstie Bedford

If passion were a person it’d be Lyndsay Sharp.

The Auckland-born owner of Leura Park Estate in the Bellarine is all smiles as she bounds into her winery restaurant in her signature oversized glasses and bright pink lipstick. And why wouldn’t she be smiling? Since moving to the region 20-odd years ago, Sharp and her husband, David, are now household names — owners of Leura Park, Jack Rabbit Vineyard, Flying Brick Cider Company, wine brand Yes said the Seal, and Curlewis Golf Club.

READ MORE: Love wine? You should head deeper into the Hunter Valley, to a place called Broke

We’re sitting at a table near the fireplace, grazing on an al fresco paddle board of Portarlington house-smoked meats, spicy Flying Brick Cider marinated chicken drums and local olives — all curated by Sharp’s son, Sam, who is the chef.

The restaurant has a homely feel, helped by the resident cat sidling up to us, and Sharp says it’s because of this “family culture” — as well as having a climate akin to the best French wine regions — that the wines are so good here.

The Bellarine Peninsula southwest of Melbourne is renowned for its surf coast, but it's also gaining recognition as a wine region. Photo / Robin Brockett and Scotchmans Hill

“All the wineries are family owned. This is what makes this region so special. Most of the time, if you come to any of us, you’re talking to the owners, the kids. They’re passionate about it, they genuinely love the region. There’s a lot of love that goes into the grapes.”

A stone’s throw away is McGlashan’s Wallington Estate, another family-owned business. Started by Russell and Jan McGlashan, daughters Maddy and Jaimie have taken over and now also brew beer and gin on site.

Over a FarmDog Pandan gin (their gin label), Russell tells me he had no intention of launching a winery when he first bought the property — an image you couldn’t imagine after driving up to the huge, rustic cellar door, past rows of picture-perfect vines.

“I was an abalone diver looking for somewhere to build a shed for my boats and bought the land, but you couldn’t build here without some sort of agriculture, so I called a local famous winemaker called Robin Brockett for advice, and he said if you plant vines, I’ll buy the fruit.”

Brockett says he was happy to offer advice, and then make a bit of wine for McGlashan that he thought was so good, he encouraged McGlashan to enter it into a local wine competition. He did that and it won, and, as they say, the rest is history.

Brockett, who was recently inducted into the Geelong Wine Hall of Fame, still makes McGlashan’s wine, as well as local wine labels Scotchmans Hill, Oakdene, Terindah and Baie.

But Brockett’s interest in wine started years earlier in New Zealand . Born in Christchurch, he went to Lincoln College and then worked at St Helena Winery Estate near Belfast before making the move to Australia, where he was eventually offered the role at Scotchmans Hill.

The winemaking tradition in the Bellarine Peninsula is supported by experienced individuals like Robin Brockett, who was recently inducted into the Geelong Wine Hall of Fame and continues to produce high-quality wines for various local labels. Photo / Robin Brockett and Scotchmans Hill

Much like Sharp, Brockett says it’s the people who make for great wines in this little pocket of Victoria’s southwest.

“We don’t just deal in a couple of varieties. Everyone is trying different things with different styles and varieties being made. And it will only get better and stronger as the region matures. There are new players coming along that are adding to the vibrancy of the region.”

As for his picks of the best wines to try when you’re visiting: “The chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz. They are all world class.”

Luxury stays and ‘Oneday’

That night we stay at Lon Retreat , a property that’s been in the family for six generations.

Claire Geme’s parents first opened the property as a bed and breakfast, which they ran for more than two decades before Claire and husband Rob took over.

The property was renovated with a mantra of “take a breath” — and you can feel it as soon as you enter. Soft music plays and guests (there are only seven suites) lounge in robes (post-spa treatments) in the open-planned lounge in front of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking manicured gardens.

Visitors to the Bellarine Peninsula can indulge in luxury accommodation options like Lon Retreat, a property owned by a multi-generational family, offering a tranquil escape with spa treatments and locally sourced amenities. Photo / Nikole Ramsay

After checking in to our suites , sprawling spaces dressed in calming neutral tones, I opt for a full body massage, take a dip in the mineral water-fed heated pool (sourced from the on-site mineral springs) and then pour a Teddy & the Fox gin — a local distiller. There’s an entire area dedicated to the creations of local makers and growers that Claire says “takes advantage of what we have on the Bellarine and shows it off to the rest of the world”.

The next morning I’m headed out on a cycle tour with Vine Tours, and after two days of wining and dining, I’m looking forward to exploring more of this bucolic countryside.

Owned by Melbourne friends Allison Hatton and Libbie Geason, the pair take cycling tours all over Victoria, including the Bellarine Rail Trail, where we’re headed. It’s a 32km route that runs alongside the historic railway, used by only vintage trains including luxury rail restaurant The Q Train. We’re cycling about 22km to Oneday Estate Winery, another family-run business, owned by former chippie and footballer Sam Murray, who decided to turn the former potato factory into a winery.

Cycling tours, such as those offered by Vine Tours, provide a unique way to explore the Bellarine Peninsula, including scenic routes like the Bellarine Rail Trail, which leads to family-run wineries like Oneday Estate. Photo / Kirstie Bedford

Opened only on Sundays (hence the name), it’s worth a visit here if only to see the eclectic collection of salvaged materials he has incorporated into the buildings. Pillars from the old Barwon Heads Bridge, timbers from the Queenscliff Marina, and remnants from the old Ocean Grove Catholic Church.

We find a table out the front where live music is playing and the sun is shining, and as I watch families laugh and kids dance to the music and sip my pinot noir, I think of what Lyndsay Sharp said about all the love going into those grapes ... and maybe it’s just the wine talking, but I’m sure I can taste it.

Oneday Estate is known for its innovative use of salvaged materials in its buildings, and its Sunday openings for visitors to enjoy live music and wine. Photo / Oneday Estate
