“The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to.” – Richard Mullin (Origin unknown)

Seeing the Big 5 for the first time, with your own eyes is an experience unlike anything you have ever had before. You can see these majestic beasts in photos and you can watch them walking across your screen, but actually coming face to face with them (at a safe distance of course), will absolutely take your breath away.

One of the most highly sought after safari experiences is to tick off a Big 5 bucket list.

The lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and Cape buffalo, are regarded as Africa’s most iconic animals and they can be seen in just about all of Southern Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations, with the most rewarding safari experience, hands down, being in the Kruger National Park, or one of the surrounding private game reserves.

In this comprehensive guide to these Guardians of the Savannah, we are taking you on an epic journey, one that will give you all of the knowledge you could ever hope to have about these incredible animals, including the best places to see them, and some photography tips.

About the Big 5 Safari Animals

Africa is home to a huge range of wildlife species and while each is fascinating in their own way, none are as iconic as the Big 5. If there were such a thing as wildlife celebrity, the Big 5 would be the animals most pursued by the paparazzi!

Since African safaris became a thing, tourists have been attracted to the continent by the possibility of seeing if not all then at least some of the Big 5. Seeing these animals roaming freely in their natural habitat is absolutely unforgettable and just the way that nature intended.

The Big 5 were given their name during the 19 th century, when conservation was not the main attraction to visit Africa but rather hunting. Big game hunters flocked to Africa, mostly from Europe, to see if they could claim a trophy to take home. Since Cape buffalo, leopard, lion, rhino and elephant were, and still are, some of the most dangerous game on the continent to hunt on foot, these 5 animals became the most attractive to hunters wanting to be able to say that they had “tamed” some of Africa’s most fierce some creatures.

We have, thankfully, learned a lot from the past and instead of being shot by hunters, the Big 5 are these days “shot” by photographers and tourists, whose only trophies are the images and memories they take home.

Today, Africa’s Big 5 live mostly protected existences within wildlife conservation parks, like the Kruger, and tourists are able to directly contribute to the preservation of these precious animals, not only through their conservation permit fees, but also through the awareness they raise by sharing their photos and the stories of their encounters.

When is the Best Time to See the Big 5 in Africa ?

The best time to plan your trip to see the Big 5 in Africa is during the height of the safari season, which is from around June to the end of October . The safari season takes place during the dry winter months , when vegetation is mostly dead and sitting in a safari vehicle is a lot more comfortable (those hot summer months can get intense on the road, and they always bring heavy rains which causes the vegetation to go into overdrive).

The lack of rain is the biggest deciding factor for travelling for a safari at this time of the year, because it greatly increases your chances of seeing the Big 5, especially when they frequent watering holes and rivers, while the lack of vegetation contributes to better visibility.

Where are the best places to see the Big 5?

The southern part of Africa is considered one of the best places to see the Big 5 , with many areas home to concentrated wildlife populations. When visiting any of these destinations, you should always keep in mind that your chances of spotting the Big 5 greatly increase when you spend more than a day in the area (like you need us to encourage you to treat yourself to a weeklong stay in one of the most beautiful places on earth, right?).

To see the Big 5, here’s where you should go:

  • The Kruger National Park

Hands down one the best places (and one of the most popular places) to see the Big 5, the Kruger National Park is right at the top of our list. Here you not only get to see these animals, but you also get a sort of communal, authentic safari experience. The park attracts large crowds almost every day and that is where that “communal” feeling comes in. Visitors usually chat with one another and share the excitement of seeing something amazing, while also sharing where they have seen the wildlife.

If this is your first Big 5 focused safari holiday, you couldn’t choose a better place than the Kruger.

  • The Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania is home to a fascinating geological wonder which is now a wildlife park. The beautiful Ngorongoro Crater is home to about 30 000 animals and the crater acts as a “fence” of sorts, in that the steep walls prevent the animals from getting out. The crater also acts as its very own, unique ecosystem.

  • Sabi Sands Game Reserve

A popular destination for those with more luxurious tastes, Sabi Sands Game Reserve is well known for its exclusive wildlife sightings; exclusive in that here there are no crowds. The reserve shares an unfenced border with the Kruger, making Big 5 sightings common.

  • Madikwe Private Game Reserve

Finally, the Madikwe Private Game Reserve, which has been lovingly rewilded after being used as farmland, is a great place to see the Big 5, and the reserve is also home to plenty of luxury lodges.

Tips and Advice for Spotting the Big 5

Planning your trip to Africa to see the Big 5 doesn’t take a lot of effort, especially when you book your trip through a reputable travel company. Here’s our advice for planning a Big 5 focused holiday:

Choose the right time of the year – Plan your holiday for between around June to October. This time of the year will give you the absolute best Big 5 sightings. Keep in mind though, that when you travel at this time of the year, you will be visiting during peak of the African tourism season, so not only will you have the crowds, but you might also be paying more for your holiday.

Book a tour with a safari company – You can have a self-guided holiday, but the best kind of Big 5 experience will be the one that you have when you book a tour with a company. A guided tour includes an experienced safari guide who will not only share fascinating information about the animals you see, but having a guide will also improve your chances of seeing the animals you hope to see.

Stay a while longer – While it is completely possible to see all of the Big 5 in a single day trip, you greatly improve your odds by spending more time out in the wild. 5 days is good, but 7 days is better.

Be patient – Wherever you choose to visit, you must remember that you are going into a wild place, not a zoo. You might see everything you hoped to see within the first hours of your safari, or, to be quite completely honest, you might see nothing at all. The best advice we can give you is to be patient during your drive around, focus on everything else you see along the way, and enjoy your trip, no matter what you encounter.

Finally, always respect park regulations and listen to your guide’s instructions. They will keep you, and the animals, safe and sound.

Threats and Conservation Efforts

Anyone with a love for the African wild knows something about the threats the animals face. Of all the wildlife, the Big 5 are among the most endangered, with poachers and the encroachment of people on natural habitats being just a few of the struggles that conservationists face.

Habitat loss, due to factors like agricultural expansion and infrastructure development, breaks up the populations and it also disrupts vital resources, such as rivers being blocked or overused. The encroachment of humans on wildlife habitats also means wildlife are affected by the changes that the surrounding humans make to wildlife water and food sources.

Poaching, both for illegal trade and trophy hunting, is another continuous and major threat. Poachers particularly target rhinos and elephants for their valuable horns and tusks. The Kruger Park is hit annually by poachers. Since the park is about the size of Israel, keeping an eye on every fence is very difficult. The Kruger has a professional anti-poaching unit and they are assisted by soldiers from the SANDF , but still, each year the park loses precious animals, especially rhinos .

Additionally, climate change is posing a growing threat through altered weather patterns which are impacting food availability and migration routes, further squeezing already vulnerable populations.

But it is not all doom and gloom.

Through on-going efforts and legislation, the park is educating the surrounding communities to protect their most precious heritage – their wildlife.

Most of the communities living close to or around wildlife reserves gain their livelihoods from tourism and this gives them a meaningful reason to protect the animals.

Photographing the Big 5

The Big 5, with their size and larger than life presence, are every single photographer’s dream, whether they are an amateur or a pro.

Having good equipment is helpful but not a must, and to get the best shots, having some advice could just be better than that expensive mirror less camera you have been eyeing.

The Majestic Africa Elephant

These gentle giants roam freely across savannahs and clumsily through woodlands in southern and eastern Africa. Some of the biggest herds can be found in the Kruger National Park (and its surrounding private game reserves), as well as Amboseli National Park in Kenya, Chobe National Park in Botswana, Etosha National Park in Namibia and Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa.

To perfectly capture these animals it is best to have a steady telephoto lens (200mm or above) to capture close-ups from a safe distance. To create a really memorable image, focus on their majestic tusks, wrinkled skin, and those playful social interactions within the herd.

The Regal African Lion

The king of the savannah, lions are most active at dawn and dusk. They generally move around in prides, and you will mostly find them in grasslands and woodlands in parks including Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in South Africa, South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, and Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.

A telephoto lens is a great lens to have on you as it will allow you to capture the lion’s powerful presence without disturbing them. As you line up your image, pay attention to light and composition, and focus on their expressive eyes and powerful facial features. Photographing lions during the golden hour will result in a powerful image.

The Stocky Rhino

Rhinos are solitary animals, so you will usually find them on their own, or if you come across a female, you might find her with her calf. Black rhinos prefer savannahs and woodlands, while white rhinos favour grasslands.

Some of the best places in Africa to photograph rhinos include Madikwe and Sabi Sand in South Africa, Moremi in Botswana and Grumeti Game Reserve in Tanzania.

To capture these animals, use a zoom lens so that you can photograph their full impressive size and unique horn formations, all while respecting space distance and avoiding any actions that might startle them.

The Stealthy Leopards

Elusive and solitary, leopards require patience and expertise to photograph, especially as they are generally found in dense vegetation that hides most of their body. They are one of the more intriguing creatures to photograph, as many times they will have kill with them, up high on a tree branch.

The Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands in South Africa, Moremi in Botswana, and South Luangwa in Zambia are all great places to photograph these stunning animals.

To get the best shots, opt for a long zoom lens (400mm to 700mm). Try to focus on their intricate patterns, sharp eyes, and agile movements during their fleeting appearances.

The Mighty Cape Buffalo

Powerful and unpredictable, buffaloes are best photographed from a safe distance in open areas like savannahs and grasslands, where they can commonly be seen munching on something tasty.

Buffaloes move about in large herds and are often spotted in the Kruger National Park and Addo Elephant Park in South Africa, Hwange in Zimbabwe and Chobe in Botswana.

Use a telephoto lens and focus on capturing their impressive horns, powerful bodies, and herd dynamics. These magnificent beasts are particularly stunning when captured in the early dawn hours or while move through a dusty terrain and will look fantastic as a black and white image.

Tour highlights/full description, call for rates.

Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa On arrival at Cape Town airport, you are met and escorted to your hotel, the lovely Cape Grace, situated on a private quay overlooking the yacht marina in Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.   Cape Town is one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world.  Cradled by Table Mountain, it has immense charm and historical interest while it’s unique cultural blend; part African, part European and part Asian, makes for a cosmopolitan dining experience.  Cape Grace Hotel – Luxury Room (B)

Day 2:   Cape Town Today explore this charming city, starting with a trip up Table Mountain by cable car for panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula. Enjoy a short walk at the summit to admire the incredible scenery. Note that the cable car tickets are for your own account as the ascent is weather dependent.   Afterwards, you travel into the city where you see the Castle of Good Hope, the original fort in Cape Town built in 1652, and now painstakingly restored. From there, you continue to the historic center of Cape Town with its many 18th-century buildings, where there is time to visit a museum or two, or take a stroll through the Company Gardens past the Parliament buildings, depending on your interests. Finally, you explore the picturesque Malay quarter, a historic sector of the city with original Malay buildings, brightly colored, and narrow streets.  You return to your hotel with the remainder of the day at leisure.  Cape Grace Hotel – Luxury Room (B)

Day 3:  Cape Town On your private Cape Peninsula excursion today you travel along the coastal road through the chic suburbs of Clifton, Camps Bay and onto the picturesque fishing community of Hout Bay.  Next you enjoy a dramatic, scenic drive along Chapmans Peak as it hugs the cliff side.  Continue south to reach Cape Point in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, said to be the romantic meeting point of two mighty oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian.  Sir Francis Drake, the famous explorer, once called it “the fairest Cape that we saw in the whole circumference of the Globe.”   Returning along the Indian Ocean, visit the unique penguin colonies at Boulders beach, often a highlight of your time in Cape Town, and meander through the historic naval base of Simonstown and onto the serene Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens nestled on the lower slopes of Table Mountain. Here, some 4,000 of the 22,000 Southern African flowering plants are cultivated in a setting of mountain streams, pools and rolling lawns.  In the late afternoon, you are returned to your hotel.  Cape Grace Hotel – Luxury Room (B,L)

Day 4:  Cape Town / Hermanus / Gansbaai You will be transferred by road to Grootbos Nature Reserve.  The Southern Cape is a bountiful area of gentle rolling green pastures, vineyards, forests and unspoiled coastline between the Cape Winelands in the West and the Garden Route to the East.  The southern coast boasts some of the finest land-based whale watching in the world with sightings of Southern Right Whales that come into the bays to give birth, between July and December, (normally peaking in August and September).  Enthralling sightings are a daily occurrence with spectacular breaches and whale songs.   Secluded sandy beaches are backed by velvety mountains covered with exceptional fynbos vegetation.  The wild flowers are particularly enchanting.  Walking trails follow the coast for whale watching, or take you into the mountains.  The more adventurous can dare cage diving among the sharks at Gansbaai (at an additional cost ).  More relaxing pursuits include shopping in local arts and craft boutiques in Hermanus and enjoying the panoramic views of Walker Bay while dining alfresco.  A visit to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa and nearby Arniston are also possibilities.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve – One Bedroom Luxury Suite (B,L,D)

Day 5:  Gansbaai Enjoy some of the activities offered by this remarkable lodge.  Grootbos Nature Reserve, amid the spectacular fynbos and ancient dunes of the southern coast, is an award-winning gem. Overlooking Walker Bay, it is a nature-lovers paradise, with inclusive activities such as guided fynbos 4×4 drives, milkwood forest walks, horseback riding, beach visits and guided land-based whale-watching as well as the optional activities such as whale watching by boat or plane and shark cage diving.  A dedicated team including marine biologists and conservationists help you to appreciate what makes this area so unqiuel.  Grootbos consists of two lodges, the family-friendly Garden Lodge with one and two bedroom suites and the new contemporary Forest Lodge.  All of the suites, nestled in the milkwood forest, have a separate lounge, full bathroom, private wooden decks with panoramic sea or mountain views, filter coffee machines, minibar, fruit basket, fireplace and underfloor heating. Each lodge has its own swimming pool, telescope for whale-watching, library, restaurant and environmental center.  Grootbos combines excellent service, with supremely comfortable accommodation and delicious food.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve – One Bedroom Luxury Suite (B,L,D)

Day 6:  Gansbaai / Cape Winelands You are collected by your private guide for a private Winelands tour.  A combination of the favorable effects of the two major ocean currents meeting off the Cape makes the climate in the Winelands perfect for the acres of vineyards.  The stunning backdrop of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, the tree-lined streets and the white gabled Cape Dutch homesteads all blend in tranquil harmony.  Visit a wine estate for a fascinating tour of the winemaking process.  Here is the perfect opportunity to sample Cape wines and experience the rich historical and architectural traditions of the region.  Continue to Stellenbosch, where it is easy to see why Simon Van Der Stel decided to build a village in such a charming spot.  Walk up Dorp Street, one of the longest rows of old Cape Dutch buildings in South Africa.  Visit the Village Museum, a collection of preserved houses that provide insight into the lives of the early settlers in Stellenbosch through to the Victorian era.  Then, enjoy a scenic drive over the majestic Helshoogte Pass to the charming village of Franschhoek for lunch and a little time for browsing in the galleries and shops.  The origins of this charming and beautifully situated village date back to 1688 when French Huguenots, fleeing religious persecution settled in the valley, later known as French Corner or ‘Franschhoek’ in Afrikaans.  The tour ends at your hotel, an intimate country inn, known for its extraordinary culinary experiences as defined in its two distinctive restaurants.  Le Quartier Francais – Auberge Room (B,L)

Day 7:  Cape Winelands / Phinda Game Reserve You will be met by our representative and transferred by road to Cape Town Airport for your flight to Durban.  On arrival, you are met and transferred to Phinda Game Reserve, north of Hluhluwe and the St Lucia wetlands.  Rich both in game and stunning scenery, Phinda encompasses the diversity of seven contrasting ecosystems, including sand forest, mountain bushveld and wetlands.  Phinda offers a winning combination of soft adventure, thrilling game viewing and inspired lodge design.  The lodge is a sophisticated harmony of ethnic décor, superb cuisine, and personalized service.  Additional facilities include a dramatic open air “boma” enclosure; shaded swimming pool and lookout deck for relaxation; and bird and game watching.  Phinda Mountain Lodge – Suite (B,L,D)

Day 8:  Phinda Game Reserve Today, enjoy activities offered by the lodge that includes game drives, nature walks, birding, rhino tracking, boat cruises, canoeing and community visits.  Wildlife here include lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard, rhino, hippo, antelope and prolific bird life, with more than 400 species recorded.  Given the reserves proximity to the Indian Ocean, optional extras include coastal flights, beach excursions and snorkeling.  Phinda Mountain Lodge – Suite, (B,L,D)

Day 9:  Phinda Game Reserve / Thonga Beach Today, enjoy a private road transfer from Phinda Game Reserve to your lodge in the coastal Maputaland area in the far northern point of KwaZulu Natal, just south of Mozambique.  The Maputaland Marine Reserve stretches 200km/124mi from Lake St Lucia, one of the world’s finest marine sanctuaries teeming with water birds, crocodiles and hippo, to Kosi Bay near the Mozambican border.  Kosi Forest Coastal Reserve is an unspoiled wilderness region of pristine golden beaches backed by forested dunes and captivating freshwater lakes.  This truly is a magical area, untouched by large-scale tourism development.  Sustainable tourism practices involve significant local community involvement.  Activities revolve around the ocean and the lake system with snorkeling for tropical fish, canoeing and evening excursions in the summer to view the rare giant leatherback turtles as they lay their eggs, usually from October to February.  This area also draws scuba divers, with its spectacular coral formations and a number of magnificent reefs teeming with tropical fish.  Thonga Beach Lodge is a stylish and relaxed beach lodge on the shores of the secluded Mabibi Bay.  Thonga Beach Lodge – Standard Room (B,L,D)

Day 10:  Thonga Beach Today, participate in some of the activities offered by your lodge in the heart of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Mabibi Beach is a magical place with a long sandy beach, reefs, coastal forest and shimmering lakes.  The lodge, in the canopy of the dune forest, offers panoramic ocean views.  It has a spacious, relaxed beach feel with a stylish outdoor eating area, a secluded upstairs seating area with a DVD player for children, an open air bar and wooden walkways leading to the rooms.  Activities revolve around the ocean and nearby Lake Sibaya.  There is a board at the bar indicating activities offered for the following day and you sign up for whatever takes your fancy.  Complimentary activities include snorkeling from the beach, bird-watching and sundowner cruises or guided canoe trips on Lake Sibaya and turtle tracking walks in season.  The white sandy beach is  just a brief walk via a boardwalk with an extended deck area with sun loungers overlooking the beach.  Additional activities include  diving courses, cultural village visits and boat-based turtle tracking are optional.  You also can do an optional whale and dolphin-watching cruise, which involves at exciting boat launch in the surf followed by a whale-watching cruise to a reef site for some leisurely snorkeling.  Children are welcome at Thonga Beach Lodge and one child can share with parents or two or three children can take a separate chalet close to their parents.  Thonga Beach Lodge – Standard Room, (B,L,D)

What documents do I need to travel to Tanzania?

A visa is required when traveling to Tanzania. Currently, this can be obtained online,  on arrival at airports and border crossings, and is valid for 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Tanzania.

Do lodges and camps have mosquito nets?

We carefully select the accommodation on safari so that you are comfortable and relaxed and can experience a one-of-a-kind atmosphere during your safari. All rooms/tents during your safari are fitted with mosquito nets or are insect-proofed to protect you against bites. You are also advised to use insect repellent to further protect yourself, especially outdoors in the evenings.

Is Tanzania safe to travel to?

Tanzania is generally considered a safe destination for safari-goers. Visitors should follow the safety guidelines provided and take necessary precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night or leaving valuables unattended.

When does the wildebeest migration take place?

The wildebeest migration takes place in Tanzania typically between the months of November to August, although the timing can vary slightly depending on the weather patterns each year. The migration is a continuous movement of around 1.5 million wildebeest and large numbers of zebras and gazelles across the Serengeti plains in Tanzania in search of fresh grazing land and water. In November and December, the herds of wildebeest can be found in the northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border, where they start calving. As the rains stop and the dry season sets in, the herds begin to move south in search of water and fresh grazing. By April and May, the herds are usually in the central Serengeti. By June, the wildebeest and other herbivores gather at the Grumeti River, where they must cross to continue their journey south. By July, the herds are usually in the eastern Serengeti; by August, they move into the northern region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Is it safe to drink water in Tanzania?

Drinking tap water in Tanzania is generally unsafe, as it may contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause illnesses such as typhoid, cholera, and hepatitis A. Drinking only bottled or filtered water is important to avoid getting sick. You can buy bottled water at most shops, hotels, and restaurants in Tanzania. When traveling in Tanzania, it’s also important to avoid drinking water from sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams, which may also contain harmful bacteria and parasites. Instead, use bottled or filtered water to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth after brushing. Additionally, avoiding ice in drinks and peeling fruits and vegetables before eating them is a good idea to reduce the risk of ingesting contaminated water.

What are the best national parks to visit in Tanzania for a safari?

Tanzania is home to many national parks, but the most popular ones for safaris are Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a Tanzania safari?

Tanzania is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, and many species of birds.

What is the best time of year to go on a Tanzania safari?

The best time to go on a Tanzania safari depends on your preferences. The dry season from June to October is the best time for game viewing, but it can be crowded and more expensive. The wet season from November to May offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices, but some parks may be closed due to flooding.

What kind of transportation will be used during my safari?

Our safaris are in 4×4 vehicles, which are ideal for navigating the rugged terrain of the national parks. Some safaris may also include flights to remote areas or walking safaris.

What should I wear on my safari?

It’s important to dress in layers and pack versatile, easy-to-wash, and dry clothing. Don’t forget also to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small backpack to carry your essentials while on safari. Choose comfortable, practical, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton or linen shirts, pants, and shorts. Long-sleeved shirts and pants can also help protect you from the sun, insects, and thorny bushes. Neutral-colored clothing such as khaki, beige, or olive green. Avoid bright colors or patterns, as they can scare off wildlife or attract insects. Closed-toe shoes such as sneakers or hiking boots for walking safaris or nature walks. Sandals or flip-flops can be worn around camp but may not provide enough protection for outdoor activities. A hat or cap to protect your head and face from the sun. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the bright sunlight. A light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings. Swimwear if you plan to visit a lodge or camp with a swimming pool. A rain jacket or poncho if you’re traveling during the rainy season.

What is the tipping etiquette for safari guides and mountain crews on trips like this?

Tipping is highly appreciated at the end of safari/mountain climb. The size of tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. You should prepare an envelope after your trek for your tip money at the Hotel. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ Shillings or a combination of these. Please ask the Safari/Climbing coordinator at the Hotel for advice.

RECOMMENDED TIP:

Mountain Climbs : $25-50 USD per Day per Climber to be shared between guides, chefs and porters.

Safaris : Driver/Guide: $35-50 USD per Day per Car. If it is a camping safari there will be a tip for the cook $10 USD per Day.

THESE ARE JUST GUIDELINES AND TIPS CAN BE GIVEN TO SAFARI STAFF/MOUNTAIN CREW ACCORDING TO SERVICES PROVIDED.

Live updates, tourists slammed for posing naked in popular desert spot: ‘very sickening’.

They de-nude-ed the landscape.

Another day, another instance of tourists disrespecting a landmark.

This time, foreign sightseers angered Namibian authorities after posing naked atop the legendary Big Daddy Dune in the Namib Desert, as seen in photos circulating on social media .

“It is very sickening and it really [creates] a bad image for Namibia,” Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, told the Namibian Sun, the BBC reported.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Namibian (@thenamibian)

He added that these antics risked attracting tourists who think that “anything goes” in the southern African nation.

Accompanying footage and video, snapped by an unknown source, shows the unnamed trio strutting about in their birthday suits atop the over 1,000-foot-tall sand mound, which is reportedly popular with families.

Visitors didn’t appreciate the tourists treating the scenic site like a nude beach and called on tourism officials to take action against the crass culprits.

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the sandy stripteasers, who allegedly left Namibia by the time authorities received the reports.

Tourists on a dune.

However, the nudists could be banned from entering the country’s parks, according to tourism ministers, who added that the “extremely shocking” act was public indecency and therefore punishable by local law.

In light of the indecent incident, officials are calling on visitors to report violators to authorities so they can deal with them accordingly.

“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” declared Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.

However, many social media users disagreed that the incident was problematic.

“Why are they in trouble? They bothered no one,” an X user declared, according to the BBC, while another claimed that there is “nothing wrong with sunbathing.”

Big Daddy is one of the three largest dunes in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park and is a popular destination among sightseers looking to get a picturesque view from its crest.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
