Our Boats and Guides

Our exclusive New Quay boat trips are guided by qualified marine biologist and enthusiastic skippers and crew.

Boat Trips at New Quay with guided tours

The 1 hour trips are on our large white catamaran. It has cover from the sun and rain, but also has an open area at the front that has an unrivalled view of the dolphins . Being a twin hulled catamaran it is very stable with fantastic seakeeping properties, it also extremely safe for children. We have a full sized toilet on board (but please try to use the nearby loos before you get on board if possible).

New Quay Boat Trips with guided tours

The 1.5 hour trip and  ½ day charters for groups of 12 and under are on our 29 foot Aluminium, purpose built wildlife watching vessel. Built in 2019, this boat is ideal for feeling at one with the sea. Virtually silent with our small, petrol outboards and with the wheelhouse at the back, nothing gets in the way when we encounter any of the amazing animals of Cardigan Bay . Our guides will be sat out with you while giving their commentary, allowing you or your children to ask as many questions as you like. You’ve paid for the trip, so make the most of it by learning as much as you can.

Both our vessels have side doors which makes stepping on board very easy. Please get in touch before booking as some of our trips leave from departure points that make wheelchair access impossible. Please view this YouTube video to get an idea of how to get to our departure point and what is involved if you have limited mobility.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oynZHKtvy3E

We may also lift a couple of strategically placed lobster pots on our 1.5hr tours, depending on the conditions.

We have a few strategically placed lobster pots along the trips. The seabed is different at each of these locations which means that we are more likely to catch different creatures at each point.

Lobsters, crabs, prawns, and even small sharks can be handed or touched before being released and we continue on our journey.

FAQs About Visiting Skomer Island

The above information covers all you need to know about our day trips. Please see below for frequently asked questions.

What Are The Essentials?

Essential Skomer Information - all bags must be closed, stay on the path at all times, take all rubbish home and please bring binoculars, sturdy shoes, waterproofs, suncream and no drones.

Essential day visit information - © WTSWW

Why do we ask you to seal your bags before coming?

Skomer is of international importance due to its populations of breeding seabirds. The absence of rats, mink, stoats and other ground predators allows ground-nesting birds like Manx Shearwaters and Atlantic Puffins to thrive. If rats were introduced to the island, even accidentally, they would decimate our seabird populations. This has happened on islands around the world.

- All luggage must be closed - unsealed luggage, including open bags and carrier bags will not be permitted to land.

- Pack all luggage yourself in a rodent-free environment and please ensure no rodent has accessed to your luggage before boarding.

- Do not leave your luggage unattended in Martin’s Haven to ensure rodents cannot enter your bags.

- Do not bring anything that might present a threat onto the island. This includes plants with root balls and compost including potted herbs, seeds etc.

What are our Accessibility and Inclusivity arrangements?

We are committed to making Skomer Island as inclusive as we can. We want as many people as possible to be able to experience the wonders of our wildlife-packed island. Find our full EDI and Accessibility page here:

Accessibility & Inclusivity on Skomer Island

Points for day visitors:

Whilst we take every care to make Skomer as physically accessible as possible, the 87 steps upon arrival and thin paths around the island make it impossible for wheelchair users to visit. We appreciate that many of our visitors will need a little longer to get up the steps to the welcome point and can adjust our welcome talks accordingly – giving separate talks to those needing a more time is always an option. For those who are pregnant or need to stop more frequently, we can advise on places to rest and take shelter.

All our toilet and bathroom facilities, for both day visitors and overnight guests, are gender-neutral.

From 2024, we will have a printout version of our welcome talk available on arrival on the island.

As the island is home to millions of seabirds, we unfortunately can’t allow dogs on the island, even guide dogs. If you are blind or partially sighted, there is the option to be chaperoned around the island by a member of staff if organised in advance.

If you or a person in your group require an adjustment to make your time with us more enjoyable, please do contact our Skomer Island Visitor Officer,  [email protected] .

Where can I park my car?

The National Trust operate two large Pay & Display Car Parks: one at Martin’s Haven and one at Marloes Sands. Both are suitable for cars and recreation vehicles.

The Martins Haven carpark is a 5 minute walk from boat embarkation point. It costs £7 daily (National Trust members go free). It can be paid for on the paybyphone app (car park no. 803527), however we recommend bringing coins as signal in this area can be poor.

The post code to follow is SA62 3BJ & What3Words///blogging.panoramic.takers.

Marloes Sands and Mere carpark is a 45 minute walk along the coast path to the boat embarkation point in Martins Haven. It also costs £7 daily (National Trust members go free). For fantastic views of the islands of Skomer and Skokholm offshore and bird watching through the Marloes Mere reserve.

The postcode to follow is SA62 3BH & What3Words///sunset.lands.knowledge.

Please note that The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales has no affiliation with this car park.

How do I get to Skomer?

To relieve pressure on the carpark at Martins Haven and rural community of Marloes, please consider your transport options before travelling. Car sharing and use of public transport will also help to reduce the environmental impact of your visit.

By Public Transport

The nearest train stations are Milford Haven and Haverfordwest. Taxi Services are available and will cost approximately £22-£25 from Milford Haven area and £35 from Haverfordwest. The 400 Puffin Shuttle is coastal route that runs between our departure point in Martin’s Haven & St Davids. This route operates daily from 25th May to 29th September 2024. You can find a list of all Pembrokeshire bus routes here .

Fflecsi Pembrokeshire is an on demand bus transport service operating in north west and south west Pembrokeshire.

Fflecsi operates across the peninsula linking the coast with Haverfordwest and Milford Haven. The service is available anytime between 7.30am and 6.30pm (Monday to Saturday). Customers can book by downloading the Fflecsi App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store . Alternatively you can book by phoning 0300 234 0300 (Monday-Saturday: 7am-7pm and Sunday: 9am-6pm). From Haverfordwest, follow Dale Road (B4327) for just over 10 miles, before following signs on to Gay Lane in Marloes. Please observe the 20mph speed limit through the village. Stay on the main road through the village and continue straight on for 1.5 miles. Do not turn off until you reach the National Trust carpark at the end of the road. Please be aware that this road is narrow and windy and uses passing places.

  • Food - there is no café or shop on Skomer. You must bring all food you require with you on the day.
  • Water - we are unable to fill up your water bottles on the island as Skomer is not connected to a mainland water supply and water is limited. Please bring enough water with you for your trip. Bottles of water can be purchased for £1.00 at the Sales Point and Visitor Centre.
  • Bins - there are no bins on Skomer. We ask that you take all rubbish home with you at the end of the day. Please note that this includes apple cores, banana skins, etc.

We will update you as soon as we have information about bad weather - if we have to cancel we will email you and full refunds will be automatically triggered. In the meantime you can keep up to date with whether day boats are running on the  Skomer Boat Twitter Feed .

The Best Way to See Wales Is by Canal Boat — Here's How to Plan Your Trip

On a watery journey through Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales, learn to let fate take the wheel.

Nina Ruggiero is Travel + Leisure's senior editorial director and the co-founder of Be A Travel Writer , an online course for aspiring travel journalists. A New Yorker based in Los Angeles, she has a special interest in beach destinations, outdoor adventures, unique hotels, pet-friendly travel with her golden retriever, @travelswithcali, and all things Italy.

“Slower!” my partner, Alex, yelled from the footpath beside the canal I was barreling down. His warm Welsh accent and deliberate tone almost masked the panic in his voice.

In response, I promptly pushed the wrong lever forward and ran our 45-foot-long narrowboat full speed into the metal underhang of the drawbridge Alex had just cranked open. Luckily, full speed on this vessel is about four miles per hour. Still, metal hitting metal produced a resounding bang, stopping a small crowd of passersby in their tracks. Nothing like an American taking the wheel in the U.K.

“Really… slowly,” Alex repeated. Beside me, my golden retriever, Cali, eyed the shore as though she might abandon ship.

Courtesy of Nina Ruggiero

For our three-day canal trip through Brecon Beacons National Park , in South Wales, we had rented the boat from Country Craft Narrowboats in the village of Llangynidr. Alex grew up about 30 miles away, and often went fishing and camping in the area with his family. Our boat, Country Girl, had a double bed with plaid bedding, a full kitchen, a lounge and dining area, a bathroom with a shower, and a deck big enough for two camping chairs, where we would sit with our morning coffees while ducks paddled beside us.

Our 20-mile round-trip took us along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, from Llangyndir to the town of Brecon and back. We floated past rural villages, sheep-filled pastures, and the red sandstone peaks of the Brecon Beacons, the mountain range for which the park is named. We followed a map of canal-side pubs , mooring up overnight so we could easily retire to our boat after dinner for a game of cards or go straight to sleep in our cozy floating home.

Our days were spent in blissful solitude. For hours at a time, we soaked in the sights and sounds of the park, sometimes stopping for a stroll or picnic.

After a wet, windy day of lifting and lowering canal locks and maneuvering out of mudbanks, no place embodies a cwtch (the Welsh word for a cuddle, hug, or small, safe space) quite like a warm pub. We often pulled up — hair drenched, clothes dirty, damp dog in tow — and were welcomed with open arms. After stopping at the Royal Oak , in the village of Pencelli, it wasn’t long before we received a call that our boat had come loose and was floating mid-canal; Alex ran out into the rain to fetch it. Sitting by the fire with a glass of Brecon Gin — a Welsh spirit that’s distilled with water from the national park — helped take the edge off.

More Trip Ideas: 16 Fairy-tale Castles in Wales to Inspire Your Next Trip

Naturally, we celebrated our halfway point in Brecon with to-go gins with all the trimmings — rosemary sprigs, grapefruit slices, and black peppercorns — from Hop In Beer & Gin House . Later that evening we docked near Three Horseshoes Inn , a hilltop gastropub in Groesffordd, and feasted on braised leeks, pork belly, and Cornish monkfish inside a wooden beach hut in the back garden.

Other than mingling with a few volunteer lock keepers — who graciously walked me through operating the locks along the rest of our path while Alex steered the tiller (we learn from our mistakes) — our days were spent in blissful solitude. For hours at a time, we soaked in the sights and sounds of the park, sometimes stopping for a stroll or picnic. When the rain came, as it did each day, we would comically jump into survival mode, grabbing our waterproof gear and shouting directions, our voices lost in the wind as we teamed up to haphazardly guide our ship to safety.

Somewhere within that contrast of peace and adrenaline, I gained a deeper understanding of the fondness with which Alex always speaks of his childhood trips to the Brecon Beacons. His deep-rooted positivity and enthusiasm for the everyday, which felt so refreshingly foreign to me when I first met him, suddenly made sense: if the Welsh didn’t learn to dance in the rain, they wouldn’t have much time to dance at all.

Feedback from our happy customers

We had a great trip with a fantastic captain. He got the right changes between speed and pauses. We saw lots of seals around puffin island.

Peter L - Chester

We spotted this trip on our way back from Dublin and had to give it a go. Today we took the 2 hour Skerries trip with our captain Charles. He is one of the nicest guys you could meet and made us feel extremely welcome and gave us an entertaining trip. The boat trip was thrilling, tranquil and informative all in one and it was the best boat trip we have had.

A great trip, it was cold but we were well wrapped up. Tom, our skipper, was really interesting and made sure we had a great experience. Well worth doing even on a cold February morning.

Come and join us on one of ur wildlife dolphin spotting trips in New Quay, West Wales!

a man riding a wave on a surfboard in the water

"We have been to New Quay for the past 4 years and every year we make sure we go on the dolphin spotting boats. They are the only boats we go on as they are so good! Always polite, useful information, stops with amazing dolphin views if they are spotted. They have a good rule where if they are on a certain side of the boat some have to stay seated so those behind can see! My 4 year old, my partner and I loves these trips highly recommended 5 stars."

"Really friendly retail staff and crew helped make everything so clear. Fully licensed and vetted craft and just watching them on and around the boat helps you feel secure and in safe hands. Really knowledgeable captain who also provides info on the coastal features and the dolphins. We had a few come right up close and underneath the boat - such a memorable experience and a highlight of our holiday. Seriously considering doing it again before we leave!"

"We went for the 1 hour excursion Wasn’t expecting to see so many dolphins, as soon as we set off there were dolphins, right next to the pier, the most time we went without seeing a dolphin was probably 10 mins, would recommend, staff friendly and very informative, rear a review where someone got wet and wasn’t happy, you will get wet because your at sea that’s what happens, would definitely go again and maybe take the 2 hour excursion."

"Well done guys you looked after the whole family yesterday including our 7 month old grandson nothing was too much trouble for you and the information about the area was very interesting. As a bonus, I even caught some fish once again a big thank you and hope to book with you again this summer."

Puffin Island

Amazing wildlife & spectacular scenery  .

With spectacular scenery and an array of wildlife it’s easy to see why we take thousands of passengers each year to view this beautiful island. Located at the NE entrance of the Menai Strait this little island hosts an abundance of wildlife including Atlantic grey seals, resident coastal birds and visiting sea birds. All our cruises offer an entertaining and informative commentary, we’ll point out places of interest and tell you about the local history. We’ll also help you spot the different birds and wildlife along the way.

boat trips in wales

Puffin Island also known as Ynys Seiriol in Welsh, is located at the Northeast entrance of the Menai Straits and is the ninth largest island off the Welsh coast. The island is steeped in history with the monastic ruins of St Seiriol and the old semaphore station to be seen, you will also pass the lighthouse at Penmon Point. Puffin Island is now a bird sanctuary and a nesting site for many species of breeding seabirds. The main season is between April and July when you are likely to see common guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and of course puffins but as with all seabirds outside of the breeding season they are only found out at sea (you will not see puffins on these cruises outside of the breeding season). We also find fulmar and eider duck breeding on the island and often spot the odd black guillemot in the area too. Other species such as cormorant and shags are on the island all year round as are our resident Atlantic grey seals. You may even be lucky enough to encounter porpoise, sometimes even dolphin.

Please note, we will only ever sail if the conditions are safe, however this is a sea cruise and sometimes the sea state around the island can be rougher than in Beaumaris and the Menai Strait.

All our trips depart from Beaumaris, you don’t get off on the island and the duration is a guide but can vary slightly with tidal conditions.

Standard Cruises

Our Standard Cruises are on-board Neptune Explorer, the first vessel in the UK to be coded under the ‘small seagoing code’ licensed to carry 54 passengers. Meeting the highest safety standards, she is incredibly maneuverable with fantastic sea keeping properties, she’s the workhorse of the fleet. By far the finest passenger vessel sailing the Menai Strait, just ask any of thousands of customers who come out with us each year.

* Dogs free

Deluxe Cruises

Our Deluxe Cruirses on-board Supanova or Salacia provide each passenger with extra space, extra speed and a more face to face experience with your skipper/guide. With limited numbers on-board there’s plenty of space for that more exclusive feel.

Important Information for all Cruises

Our Cruises are suitable for all ages, there are basic toilet facilities on-board each boat, you can even bring your dog with you. If you have special access requirements we have prepared an access statement . Please note we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on Salacia or Supanova, it may be possible to accommodate wheelchairs on Neptune Explorer but please read our access statement and contact us before booking.

Our Cruises depart from Beaumaris Pier (postcode LL58 8BS) unless otherwise stated. You must check in at our ticket kiosk 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Please note TRIPS WILL NOT BE DELAYED FOR LATE ARRIVALS.

It is always best to book, we fill up fast especially in the holidays. Please book online, or if you want to just check sailing times you can see them on our booking page too. You can book online up to 1 hour before departure. We don't take bookings over the phone or by email, but if we have any availability left you can book at our ticket kiosk by Beaumaris Pier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Well behaved dogs are welcome on-board, however, there is no specific space allocated for them. Dogs will be required to sit by your feet or on your lap (not on the seats) so it may not be suitable for particularly large breeds. Please be considerate to other passengers when bringing your dogs and consider access especially along the council operated ramp as the surface is small open squares and not paw friendly.

We normally see puffins on our Puffin Island boat trips between early April and mid-July. These dates are just a guide and could be earlier or later, but once the puffins have finished breeding we will not see any puffins on any of our boat trips.

Very occasionally we are lucky enough to see dolphins on our cruises but most of the time we don’t see dolphins.

You will need to check in at our ticket kiosk 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. All the details are on your booking confirmation email. For information about parking and directions to our ticket kiosk have a look at our plan your visit page.

Please look at the booking page for all scheduled trip times.

We advise customers to book online , you can also book in person at the ticket kiosk if we have any seats remaining, but please note we do not take bookings over the phone or by email. If you are looking to book for a large group or want a bespoke private charter, please drop us an email and we can advise you how to go about booking.

We strongly recommend that you wear suitable clothing and bring waterproofs. We will do our best to keep you as dry as possible but there may be sea spray (or rain, we are in Wales…) and most seating is not covered. The windier the weather the more spray there is and the wetter you may get. Please note we don’t normally cancel trips if it’s raining so check the forecast and bring appropriate clothing (jacket and waterproof trousers are best in the rain).

There are no age restrictions on our boats, all ages are welcome. If you have mobility issues we recommend you read our access statement or get in touch before booking.

Unfortunately, none of our boats have full disabled access. We will always try and accommodate you if it is possible and of course safe, please read our access statement and drop us an email with your specific requirements, however we cannot accommodate electric or motorised wheelchairs on any of our boats.

Yes, we have basic toilet facilities on all our boats. The toilets on our boats are marine toilets that discharge directly into the sea, it is not recommended that you flush solids down the toilets as they are also easily blocked. We recommend that customers use facilities ashore before boarding the boats. Toilets at sea ok for a wee, toilets ashore for anything more!

Our trips run daily between early Spring and mid-Autumn, we usually announce the first day of the season on our socials, and all scheduled trips are available to book online . If it’s out of season and you’re looking for a trip or private charter then please feel free to email and we might be able to arrange something for you.

All our cruises depart and return to the pier in Beaumaris, you do not get off the boat during the cruise.

Our boat trips will only go ahead if it safe to do so . If Seacoast Safaris have to cancel because of the weather we will try and give you as much notice as possible and you will receive a full refund if you aren’t able to rebook for another day. Sometimes we are able to offer an alternative cruise in the Menai Strait if it is too rough around Puffin Island. Please note the wind strength and direction are the main factors we take into consideration if we have to cancel, we do not normally cancel if it’s forecast rain, if you are concerned about taking a trip in the rain please keep an eye on the weather forecast as you are able to cancel or move your booking up to 24 hours before departure (see cancellation policy).

  • A full refund, or
  • an alternative trip/charter, with any differences in value refunded, or
  • a gift voucher to the same value of the trip booked which will remain valid for 18 months.

All our vessels fully conform to the MCA codes and licensing and carry all the necessary safety equipment. All vessels carry appropriately sized lifejackets and life rafts for all passengers. Due to the design of our vessels you are not required to wear a lifejacket during our cruises.

We will only ever sail if the conditions are safe, however trips to Puffin Island are sea cruises and sometimes the sea state around the island can be rougher than within the Menai Strait. If you are a nervous sailor please bear this in mind and maybe consider booking a Menai Strait Cruise.

Politics latest: Starmer announces £84m to 'grip' migration 'crisis' after summit with European leaders

Sir Keir Starmer pledges to "deepen" UK connection with the EU following European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace. The prime minister announced new funding for humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, the Covid Inquiry concluded government 'failed' to prepare for the pandemic.

  • The COVID Inquiry released a report on UK preparedness for the pandemic
  • Ed Davey and Pat McFadden gave evidence at the Post Office inquiry
  • Beth Rigby: How to survive a general election
  • Listen: What are Labour's key plans?
  • Jon Craig : Sunak apologises to Tory MPs eight times at party 'wake'
  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler and (earlier)  Tim Baker

That's it from the Politics Hub today so thanks for joining us.

Don't forget to tune in to our special documentary tonight, Election: Behind The Scenes At Sky News, airing at 9pm on Sky Documentaries and 10.30pm on Sky Showcase.

You can catch it at 9pm tomorrow night on Sky News too.

Have a good evening!

Finally, we talk about MPs being told to smarten up in the Commons.

Earlier, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said male members needed to "wear a tie or you just might not catch my eye" if they want to speak in a debate.

So how important is it?

Labour's John McDonnell quotes a party colleague, saying: "It's not the smartness of the clothing but the smartness of the decisions you make."

But Conservative Alicia Kearns says they discuss "the most solemn of issues" in the chamber, so there is "something about the respect to the mother of all parliaments" in dressing smartly.

Now we turn to the director of the thinktank Civil Exchange Caroline Slocock to discuss the first report from the official COVID inquiry.

It was published today , and said UK citizens were "failed" by their governments' processes, planning and policy leading up to the pandemic.

Ms Slocock, who was a senior civil servant who worked under both Margaret Thatcher and John Major, says the report is "humbling" for government and the civil service, and "speaks to a failure of government".

She adds: "It's time for governments really to think differently about how they plan. I know from, not just from working with those two prime ministers, but also my wider experience of government that it's not very good at thinking ahead or thinking preventatively.

"[Government] tends to be better at crisis management and new initiatives than it is really managing the sorts of underbelly of issues which if you don't get that right, things come back to bite you."

Ms Slocock also echoed the report in her condemnation of so-called "group think" in Whitehall.

She said ministers do not "listen enough to people outside of central government", and that is "vital" in a situation like a pandemic.

Now we move over to our panel, Labour's John McDonnell and Conservative Alicia Kearns.

Ali Fortescue asks Mr McDonnell whether he ever imagined Donald Trump would get back into the White House.

He says after 6 January insurrection, he thought "America had learned his lesson with regard to Trump and his attitude towards the law, the constitution, democracy."

And he says it's "the worst nightmare they could possibly have" in America for its politics.

Ms Kearns agrees with her Labour counterpart over his concerns about what a Trump presidency means for Ukraine too.

Calling it a "grave concern", she added: "It is important we have a partner we can rely on for going forward to Ukraine."

Ali Fortescue then asks Labour's Nick Thomas-Symonds about the looming presence of the US election and the impact a Donald Trump victory could have on support for Ukraine.

Was it talked about at the EPC summit?

"Well we've been talking here about Europe," he tells Ali. "We've been talking about European solidarity backing President Zelenskyy and Ukraine.

"In respect of the American presidential election, that is a matter for the American people to decide, whoever they elect as their president.

"We as the UK government will work with them. We have a special relationship, a deep special relationship forged in the most difficult of historic circumstances, and I've no doubt that will endure into the future."

But surely European politicians have concerns, especially after the announcement of JD Vance as his running mate - who has been very critical of spending American money on a war in Europe.

"Well, let's let's just see what happens," says Mr Thomas-Symonds. "I'm not going to start going into hypotheticals, starting to anticipate what may or may not happen.

"What happens here is that the American people have a decision to make. They make that decision. We will respect that decision.

"We will always act in the UK's national interest and work with whoever is the president of the United States, because that is what is in Britain's national interest. And that's precisely what this government will do."

The government's minister for European relations Nick Thomas-Symonds is now talking to Ali Fortescue after what he deemed a successful day at the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace.

He points to the announcement made by Sir Keir Starmer to fund £84m of projects in Africa and the Middle East to tackle illegal migration at "source" and stopping people feeling the need to flee from their homes in the first place.

But Ali asks him when the public will see if the plan is working.

"Well, one person who is in those boats putting their lives at risk is one too many," he says. "So we are starting that work now.

"Of course you will judge, as will the British public judge, its success or failure on whether it is effective or not, whether it does actually crack down on this vile trade in people smuggling.

"And of course, you'll be able to see evidence of that as the government starts to implement its policy."

But he warns it could be a long wait, adding: "We have to bear in mind as well the really dire nature of our inheritance and the scale of this challenge.

"We know the scale of this challenge. We know how difficult it is, but we are determined to do the work to tackle it."

We start with our political editor Beth Rigby talking to us from outside Blenheim Palace, where the European Political Community (EPC) summit has been taking place.

She says the tone has been "very positive", with lots of diplomats and officials on the sidelines telling her "the reset is real and that the Labour government is really making progress".

The prime minister kicked off the conference by reassuring the European leaders that he would not leave the European Convention on Human Rights, says Beth - something often threatened by the former Conservative government.

"I'm told by one EU diplomat that this went down extremely well, that European leaders were not expecting it, but they really welcomed it and they saw it as proof, if you like, that Keir Starmer really does want to reset relations."

But while our political editor says "the reset is on", changing the relationship is "going to take time".

"Sir Keir said himself that it will be a combination of bilateral talks and then dealing with the European Union as an institution," she adds.

"But the mood music at Blenheim Palace was extremely positive. And Sir Keir and his team are very pleased with how things have gone down."

Now it's time for the Politics Hub with Ali Fortescue in the chair tonight.

Ali will be talking to the director of the Civil Exchange thinktank Caroline Slocock about the first report from the official COVID inquiry.

From the government, she will also speak to the minister for European relations Nick Thomas-Symonds .

And on the panel is Labour's former shadow chancellor John McDonnell and the Tory chair of the foreign affairs committee Alicia Kearns .

You can watch the show in the stream above, or follow our updates for all the highlights.

It may have been two weeks since Labour was voted into power, but they are still filling roles on their frontbench.

We have just had a list through of some new appointments, so take a look below...

  • Hamish Falconer - parliamentary under secretary of state in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office;
  • Baroness Chapman - parliamentary under secretary of state in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office;
  • Mary Creagh - parliamentary under secretary of state in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs;
  • Martin McCluskey - assistant government whip;

More than 192,000 children in England and Wales have parents who are currently in jail, new figures have revealed.

It is the first time the government has shown the scale of young people impacted - an estimated 192,912 - who, without support, often follow their parents into crime, studies show.

But charities say releasing the statistics is only "the first step", and are now calling for the new government to do more to support the "invisible children" who are "falling through the cracks".

Labour has a history of campaigning on the issue in opposition, with the now energy minister Kerry McCarthy bringing forward a private members' bill, calling for national guidelines, ensuring the state identifies any children at the point of sentencing, and accountability for giving them support.

The thrust of her bill made it into Labour's general election manifesto, which said: "The children of those who are imprisoned are at far greater risk of being drawn into crime than their peers. We will ensure that those young people are identified and offered support to break the cycle."

However, the commitment failed to appear in the King's Speech on Wednesday, which outlined the government's policy agenda for the next 12 to 18 months.
