“Bianca is my name, I’m part of the third Brandimarte’s generation,I am the daughter of Stefano,the nephew of Brandimarte Guscelli and my big goal is bring Silver to daily use and educate the international market to appreciate the beauty and the unique Characteristics of it”.

Brandimarte, founded in 1955, is a traditional Florentine history, created by Brandimarte Guscelli, born in a street down the Victory Bridge.

Brandimarte has employed workers, created training to learn how to manage the silver, he gave work to prisoners, and while he was following the enlightened artisan flair of its founder,he adopted two important innovative revolutions in the field of silverware; the first one was a technical nature which involved “hammering” the metal, as he had seen the gypsies with copper and the second was proposing the silver items in everyday home, using them commonly, breaking the customary silver product as a piece of luxury to show.

The Brandimarte’s silvers are forged by hand for over 100 employees and by the sudden death of the founder, in 1994, the company will be followed by the sons Stefano and Giada Guscelli, always present on the holding.

They will continue working about the handicraft technique and the how-know Made in Italy.

New lines are created, one of these is the “Wine Collection”: decanter and glasses 925 silver tasting, following the successful trend of the wine sector as silver has organoleptic properties and antibacterial properties, thereby enlarging the retail to foreign markets.

Brandimarte’s chisels continue to be appreciated especially by the Russian market.

First in Via Bartolini, the company then moved in Viale Ariosto, Lungarno Acciaiuoli and on the recently years in Via Foscolo.

In 2016 the brand has been bought by entrepreneur and owner of Remax Rinascimento Stefano Marchetti, partner of Guscelli Bianca.

Today Bianca Guscelli is strongly committed to carry on the tradition and the historic Florentine brand family.

Cellini’s echo in an exclusive florentine chisel.

Over the last fifty years, there have not been many fashion brands in Florence that have contributed to making Made in Italy known in the world. And their names have become real must-haves: from Ferragamo to Gucci, from Coveri to Cavalli to Daelli-Scervino.  The Brandimarte brand also belongs to this small group, in the wake of a Florentine silversmith tradition in which the echo of Benvenuto Cellini’s creativity still resounds. 

Founded in 1955 by Brandimarte Guscelli at Parco delle Cascine, in a warehouse on the banks of the Arno, its products immediately established themselves for two innovative aspects in silver working. The first, of a technical nature, involved “hammering” the metal, as Brandimarte had seen gypsies do with copper; the second involved providing silver objects for everyday use at home, using them regularly and so breaking the custom of silver items being a luxury piece for display. 

His thirty-year old granddaughter Bianca, with her great dynamism, is today at the helm of the historic brand and she tells us, “At the start his work was even criticised. People soon had to change their minds because hammering the silver plate as he and his craftsmen did created a particular luminous effect”. When he died in 1994, his children Stefano and Giada continued expanding the range of products with new lines: one of these was the Wine Collection in which decanters and tasting glasses in 925 silver found a place, following the successful trend of the wine sector. “There was no invention in this case” – explains Bianca – “because in the past the material was regularly used for glasses; in fact, as an antibacterial, antibiotic, conductor of heat and an enhancer of aromas, silver is the ideal metal for the consumption of food and drinks”.  

The wine collection allowed the Guscelli family – Brandimarte was the name he was baptised with by his parents, who were passionate about Orlando Furioso – to further expand the markets.  “The collection was created from an idea of my father Stefano and Klaus Riedel, who was a great buyer of our silver glasses, which he just used for drinking wine. Hence the creation of our tasting glass, which was destined to be a resounding success. It is obvious that this glass does not intend to replace an icon such as that of the crystal glass, but rather to allow quality wine to be able to count – in addition to crystal – on another and extraordinary type of glass: that of silver”.  

If silverware enjoyed considerable success up to 2000 as a gift item, in the following decade the increase in the cost of raw materials and the collapse in trends and tastes, especially amongst young people, caused a general crisis in the sector. In addition to these factors, foreign competition and sanctions against Russia, one of our best markets, were also determining factors. All this led to Stefano Guscelli’s decision  to “kill off” the glorious Brandimarte brand in 2016. A great loss for quality Florentine craftsmanship. 

Stefano, however, had not taken into account his young daughter Bianca, who had been in the workshop since she was 6 years old, touching the metal, looking and listening, even though she couldn’t ask any questions. And once she grew up, on the strength of what she learned from travelling the world with her father and her work experience at Chanel, Bianca started a strategy to relaunch the Brandimarte brand.  “It took a few months” – she says enthusiastically in her new shop in the historic centre of Florence – “here I am able to regain possession of the brand, to reconnect with the artisans who worked with us and to resume the business. The news of Brandimarte’s rebirth, boosted by newspapers and television, is bringing back customers, old and new. And the requests from abroad are also starting up again.”  

Today, in addition to the highly sought-after Wine Collection, the rich catalogue includes bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and medals depicting some historical Florentine characters (Lorenzo de’ Medici, Machiavelli, Galileo, Dante, Leonardo, and obviously Brandimarte).  

What are your future projects? “As we are working very well with the United States” – concludes Bianca – “I would like to open a concept store there to make drinking from silver fashionable, whilst at the same time making Brandimarte an increasingly recognisable brand. On the other hand, today if you are not a brand you are nobody. And as we are starting from a brilliant idea, in a sector where there is little competition, I hope this relaunch will be successful.”

Over the years, Brandimarte has been an employer and a trainer of new silversmiths and has also been the first company to give work to inmates. Following the ingenuity for handicrafts of its founder, they have adopted two important innovations, almost revolutionary in the field of silversmithing: the first one was a technical one consisting in “hammering” the metal, in the same way Brandimarte had seen the gipsies do with copper; the second one has been the idea of proposing silver objects for every day use at home, breaking with the habit of displaying silver artifacts just as something luxurious and for special occasions. At some stage of its history, Brandimarte’s silver objects were made by hand by over 100 workers. Following the sudden death of the founder in 1994, the firm was taken over by his children Stefano and Giada Guscelli, always active in the business and who continued practicing the artisanal techniques and respecting the Made in Italy. Brandimarte’s chiseled silver artifacts continue to be known and valued around the world. From its location in via Bartolini, the firm moved to Viale Ariosto, Lungarno Acciaiuoli and then in the last few years in via Foscolo. In 2016 the brand was bought by the entrepreneur and owner of “Remax Rinascimento,” Stefano Marchetti, Bianca Guscelli’s life partner. Today Bianca is strongly involved in bringing the tradition and the historic family brand forward. Thanks to the work of the best Florentine and Tuscan artisans, Brandimarte today produces a variety of artifacts, from chiseled objects, to glasses and decanters, to jewels like bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants and much more. Dania beach mayor's wife says vice mayor is 'no poor sweet old lady', mayor's wife says local 10 news reporter has a 'thug style'.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – According to a Facebook post, the wife of Dania Beach Mayor Walter Duke implies Vice Mayor Chickie Brandimarte is, "no poor sweet old lady. I can assure you."

And that's not all. According to the Facebook post, Lisa Duke, also calls Local 10's Jeff Weinsier a "thug style" reporter and that's why her husband refuses to talk to him.

Weinsier has done a series of reports after the mayor and Commissioner Bobbie Grace refused to excuse Brandimarte from a commission meeting June 24th.

Brandimarte was in the hospital recovering from surgery and at one point was in the intensive care unit.

According to the city charter, the vice mayor could be removed from office if she misses another commission meeting.

Weinsier tried to ask Duke why he didn't vote to excuse the absence, but the mayor refused to comment.

Political insiders say Duke and Grace are political allies and are using this to try to remove the vice mayor.

"Are you surprised that your colleagues did not excuse your absence from the dais?" Weinsier asked Brandimarte.

"I am very surprised, because it was beyond my control," said Brandimarte.

Commissioner Albert Jones made the motion to excuse the vice mayor, but it was not seconded by Duke or Grace, and it died.

"This is abominable for them to not excuse her when they know she is flat on her back," said Jones.

Jones claims absences are always excused.

"It is unconscionable that this happened, and happened in this city," said Jones.  "And these are the type of things that happen in Dania Beach."

While Duke refused to talk to Weinsier, in a written statement to Local 10 News, Duke said, "Attendance at commission meetings has been made even more critical since the "tea-party" style impasse forced on Dania Beach by Commissioners Jones & Brandimarte over the past year.  Neither the City nor my office has been notified of Commissioner Brandimarte's reason for her recent absences and an excused absence from official duties should not be automatic."

Jones said he was aware of her illness and he had mentioned it at a couple of meetings and events.

Brandimarte is now recovering at home and isn't sure she will have the strength to make it to the next meeting on  July 22.

Jones said he will make a motion to reverse the unexcused absence.

Chickie Brandimarte became well known citywide after she beat up a man who tried to rob her at gunpoint last summer as she stepped off an elevator in the Meadowbrook Lakes condominium community.

“I couldn’t go to the grocery store,” said Brandimarte, 62. “Everybody in town knew about it. They were calling me ‘Rocky.'”

Now Brandimarte is working with Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies to help fellow residents protect themselves against crime.

Last September, about two weeks after the Aug. 24 attempted robbery, she started a Citizen Observer Patrol crime prevention program with 12 people.

The program now has 52 members, and eight more people have registered for an April training stint to be conducted by the Sheriff’s Office.

Members include Mayor Jim Cali, a Meadowbrook resident who often goes on evening patrols.

“The COP program was born out of the attempted robbery] incident,” Brandimarte said. “I’m glad we’ve made a difference.”

During the incident, the would-be robber pointed a gun at Brandimarte and ordered her to back into the elevator.

Brandimarte said she struck him in the face with a right fist — and he ran away. Deputies later arrested the robber after Brandimarte identified him in a photograph.

“People get scared or react. My nature is to react under any circumstances,” Brandimarte said. “I will do it again if I have to.”

The incident seems to be a godsend for deputies, who had been struggling to recruit members for the program citywide.

The initial group that deputies started in Meadowbrook did not last a long time because residents were not interested.

Since Brandimarte became involved, however, membership has increased dramatically in the newly established program, said Detective Rich Tarrant, who coordinates the Dania Beach program.

“It’s by all means the most successful,” Tarrant said. “The people in Meadowbrook are the backbone of this program. Chickie is a bowl of fire.”

Brandimarte said her goal is to recruit 500 members in Meadowbrook, which has more than 1,000 residents.

They ride in old repainted police cars provided by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office also gave them two cellular phones, which they use to report suspicious activities to deputies. They cannot make arrests.

“If they see something all they have to do is call us, and BSO will be there,” Tarrant said.

Last month, he said, the group gave deputies information that led to a drug-related arrest in a Meadowbrook apartment.

Tarrant said it is difficult to measure the program’s results. But Nancy Winkler and Bill Wallace, two Meadowbrook residents, said the program already has had a big impact on reducing crime in the area.

Winkler said fewer cars have been stolen from the complex since the program started.

“I have seen such an improvement, and I’m very happy with the way things are going now,” Wallace said.

The group meets at 9 a.m. every Monday in the Meadowbrook’s Phase-4 clubhouse, where members socialize and discuss security issues.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates tried to wring itself out Thursday after the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation , with its main airport allowing more flights even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and communities.

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel , allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. And long-haul carrier Emirates, crucial to East-West travel, began allowing local passengers to arrive at Terminal 3, their base of operations.

However, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said in an interview with The Associated Press that the airfield needed at least another 24 hours to resume operations close to its usual schedule. Meanwhile, one desert community in Dubai saw floodwaters continue to rise Thursday to as much as 1 meter (3 feet) as civil defense officials struggled to pump out the water.

“We were looking at the radar thinking, ‘Goodness, if this hits, then it’s going to be cataclysmic,’” Griffiths said of the storm. “And indeed it was.”

The airport ended up needing 22 tankers with vacuum pumps to get water off its grounds. Griffiths acknowledged that taxiways flooded during the rains, though the airport’s runways remained free of water to safely operate. Online videos of a FlyDubai flight landing with its reverse thrust spraying out water caught the world’s attention.

“It looks dramatic, but it actually isn’t that dramatic,” Griffiths said.

Emirates, whose operations had been struggling since the storm Tuesday, had stopped travelers flying out of the UAE from checking into their flights as they tried to move out connecting passengers. Pilots and flight crews also had a hard time reaching the airport given the water on roadways.

But on Thursday, Emirates lifted that order to allow customers into the airport. That saw some 2,000 people come into Terminal 3, again sparking long lines, Griffiths said.

Others who arrived at the airport described hourslong waits to get their baggage, with some just giving up to head home or to whatever hotel would have them.

The UAE, a hereditarily ruled, autocratic nation on the Arabian Peninsula, typically sees little rainfall in its arid desert climate. However, a massive storm forecasters had been warning about for days blew through the country’s seven sheikhdoms.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport. Other areas of the country saw even more precipitation.

Meanwhile, intense floods also have struck neighboring Oman in recent days. Authorities on Thursday raised the death toll from those storms to at least 21 killed.

The UAE’s drainage systems quickly became overwhelmed Tuesday, flooding out neighborhoods, business districts and even portions of the 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road highway running through Dubai.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.”

In a message to the nation late Wednesday, Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, said authorities would “quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused.”

On Thursday, people waded through oil-slicked floodwater to reach cars earlier abandoned, checking to see if their engines still ran. Tanker trucks with vacuums began reaching some areas outside of Dubai’s downtown core for the first time as well. Schools remain closed until next week.

Authorities have offered no overall damage or injury information from the floods, which killed at least one person.

However, at least one community saw the effects of the rainfall only get worse Thursday. Mudon, a development by the state-owned Dubai Properties, saw flooding in one neighborhood reach as much as 1 meter. Civil defense workers tried to pump the water out, but it was a struggle as people waded through the floodwater.

Residents of Mudon, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity given the UAE’s strict laws governing speech, described putting together the equivalent of nearly $2,000 to get a tanker to the community Wednesday. They alleged the developers did nothing to help prior to that, even as they called and emailed. They also said a nearby sewage processing facility failed, bringing more water into their homes.

“A lot of people were in denial of how bad it was,” one homeowner said as civil defense officials waded through the water, bringing bottled water on a raft.

Dubai Holding, a state-owned company that has Dubai Properties as an arm, did not respond to questions. It’s part of a wider nexus that U.S. diplomats have called “Dubai Inc.” — all properties overseen by the city-state’s ruling family.

The flooding sparked speculation that the UAE’s aggressive campaign of cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.

Scientists also say climate change is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations’ COP28 climate talks just last year.

Abu Dhabi’s state-linked newspaper The National in an editorial Thursday described the heavy rains as a warning to countries in the wider Persian Gulf region to “climate-proof their futures.”

“The scale of this task is more daunting than it appears even at first glance, because such changes involve changing the urban environment of a region that for as long as it has been inhabited, has experienced little but heat and sand,” the newspaper said.

What is Labour’s plan for rail travel and will it make tickets cheaper?

Party wants to fully nationalise train network within five years of coming to power, in ‘biggest rail reform for a generation’

Labour has made one of its most radical proposals yet in the run-up to an election campaign: to fully nationalise the train network within five years of coming to power.

The party has pledged to guarantee the cheapest fares as part of “the biggest reform of our railways for a generation”, bringing all passenger rail into national ownership under the Great British Railways (GBR) body.

So, how difficult would the plan be to enact and what does it mean for passengers?

How would Labour’s plan for Great British Railways change the way the trains are run?

The headline change is nationalisation: the ambition that all passenger train operations, at least, should return to public ownership. But the wider aim is that control of trains and tracks – “wheels and steel”, as some put it – is brought back under one unified structure, at arm’s length from the government.

The actual railway infrastructure is already managed by the state-owned Network Rail, since the disastrous tenure of Railtrack in the early days of privatisation, and train operations in Scotland, Wales and a large chunk of England are in public ownership. So a fully renationalised railway (bar the rolling stock and freight) is not as big a step as it may once have sounded – and arguably the pragmatic extension of the plans drawn up by the Conservatives in 2021, to end the fragmentation and waste in the system.

How long will the changes take?

Labour said it would get the ball rolling on day one. Given the years it has taken for the Conservatives’ GBR plans to crystallise into a draft bill that has scant chance of passing before an election, supporters of the changes would be forgiven for not holding their breath for legislation. But some of the spadework has been done by the GBR transition team, and Labour will be hoping for a more stable tenancy in Downing Street to see the policy through. It is, it stresses, a long-term plan.

As far as nationalisation of the train operators goes, most of the contracts of remaining operators will expire naturally within the next term, while the government can exercise break clauses in others, such as Avanti West Coast and Cross Country.

What would the trains look like?

Eventually, they would all be GBR-branded trains rather than the individual liveries and logos of different operators. Labour hopes that this will make things simpler for passengers, avoiding confusion over ticketing, as well as cutting costs.

Would it make train travel cheaper?

Possibly, but not for a while yet. Labour says it wants to make the railway more affordable but has definitively avoided any pledges to cut or even freeze the overall level of fares.

However, it believes that its plans will eventually save £2.2bn a year by avoiding the duplication and bureaucracy brought on by the current system, where the Department for Transport tightly controls and specifies contracts for the private firms, and reams of staff are employed in back-end roles. That could give ministers some scope to use more of the billions in annual taxpayer subsidy to bring fares down long-term.

What about this best-price guarantee?

Make that an “ambition”, according to the policy document . It’s testament to the complexity, or occasional absurdity, of UK rail fares that even after years of industry focus on improving the system, renationalising looks an easier promise than telling a passenger they’ve paid the right amount.

Things can be improved, Labour says, as contactless tap-in and tap-out payments extend through more and more of the country, opening up the possibility of a Transport for London-style system, where fares are streamlined and automatically capped or refunded.

The shadow transport secretary, Louise Haigh, pointedly chose the headquarters of Trainline in central London to launch her plans on Thursday, paying tribute to the travel app firm’s “relentless focus on passengers [and] improving their experience”. Trainline shares fell 10%, even though Labour says it has no plans to replace the private firm with a single state retailer.

But given that the app’s business depends on people paying extra to cut through the railway’s confusing fares, fragmentation and lack of a decent central ticketing site, Trainline shareholder nerves might be taken as a vote of confidence that GBR will improve the industry’s own offering.

How else might passengers benefit?

Labour says it would leave the running of the railway to the experts – but the transport secretary would set strategy and take on the role of passenger-in-chief, and the industry would not be “marking its own homework”.

The plan aims to strengthen the voice of passengers by rolling together the various bodies currently meant to be standing up for them – the watchdog Transport Focus and the little-known Rail Ombudsman, as well as a few divisions of the Office of Rail and Road.

What will happen to the private operators?

Their representatives at Rail Partners warn that it will be “messy” and the railway will lose their expertise. But the people actually running train operators, right up to the managing directors, have typically stayed in post with a different coloured badge when the owning groups moved on, and passengers at say, Southeastern or LNER may not feel life is very different. Firms once regarded as pillars of privatised rail such as Stagecoach, National Express (now Mobico) and Virgin have long exited UK rail already, pursuing business elsewhere.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

• Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
• You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
• There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
• Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
• If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
• You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
• You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
