Alaska Cruises from Vancouver

Alaska cruise ship - Cruises from Vancouver, BC

Thanks to its location in the southwestern corner of British Columbia, Vancouver is the most convenient gateway city for cruises to Alaska .

It’s closer to America’s “Last Frontier” than other cities offering cruises to Alaska, such as Seattle and San Francisco. This, of course, means that you will spend less time getting there and more time actually exploring Alaska’s top destinations.

According to the Port of Vancouver website, this is also the only homeport that offers both roundtrip and one-way cruises to Alaska via Canada’s Inside Passage . This fact alone makes Vancouver a place worth considering for your Alaska cruise.

In addition to the Inside Passage, Alaska cruises from Vancouver also include other glorious destinations like the Hubbard Glacier, Sitka, Icy Strait, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay and Anchorage. Basically, whatever major coastal destination in southern Alaska you’d like to visit, you can do so on a Vancouver cruise.

These Alaska cruises from Vancouver vary widely in duration. From 3 nights to 15 nights, you should be able to find an option that suits your travel plans.

Hawaii Cruises from Vancouver

Beach in Oahu, Hawaii

As a major cruise port on the West Coast of North America, Vancouver is also a great place to start a cruise to Hawaii. If you’d like to combine a trip to the Pacific Northwest with some unlimited sun, sea and sand in Hawaii, that’s absolutely a possibility.

Although most Hawaiian cruises start in Honolulu, a select number depart from Vancouver, too. These epic sailings involve several (5 to 6) days at sea—it’s a long way from Vancouver to Hawaii! Major cruise lines that offer cruises from Vancouver to the Hawaiian Islands include Celebrity, Holland America and Royal Caribbean .

Because it takes a while to sail from the North American mainland to Hawaii, these cruises are typically at least 8 nights long. Most are longer. Often, they include a stop in Victoria, the historic capital of British Columbia, before hitting the open sea. Once in Hawaii, most itineraries take you to popular destinations like Hilo, Kailua, Maui and Honolulu .

Pacific Northwest Cruises from Vancouver

Pacific Northwest Cruises

One of the three main cities in the Pacific Northwest—along with Seattle and Portland—Vancouver is a fantastic base to explore this lush and diverse region. Characterized by the Cascade volcanoes, vast temperate rain forests, an abundance of waterfalls, spectacular coastlines, world-class seafood and vibrant cities, it’s a destination that attracts foodies, history buffs and nature lovers alike.

On Pacific Northwest cruises from Vancouver, you get to indulge in all of that. These cruises are generally relatively short, often between 3 and 5 nights. Depending on their duration, you get to visit one or all of the following Pacific Northwest destinations: Victoria, British Columbia; Seattle, Washington; and Astoria, Oregon.

As examples of how varied your options are, even within such a limited area, you can go on a 1-day cruise from Vancouver to Seattle or a 5-night cruise to all above-mentioned ports.

Consider a Pacific Northwest cruise from Vancouver is you’d like a different perspective of this glorious region, a relaxed sea journey offering breathtaking views of its islands, sounds, bays and inlets. You may even spot a pod of orcas or other whales.

West Coast Cruises from Vancouver

Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California - Best Cruises from Vancouver

For the ultimate journey along the amazing West Coast—or Pacific Coast—of North America, opt for a one-way cruise from Vancouver to one of California’s major cities. West Coast cruises from Vancouver can be as short as 3 days or as long as 10 nights. So, no matter how much time you have, there’s the perfect itinerary for you.

Most Vancouver cruises down the Pacific Coast stop at classic destinations such as Victoria, San Francisco and/or Los Angeles . Depending on the duration and final destination of your trip, itineraries may also include Seattle, Astoria, Monterey, Santa Barbara and/or San Diego. Some cruises even swing by Ensenada, Mexico.

We can’t overstate how phenomenal a journey this is. It’s the Pacific Coast in a nutshell, a brilliant journey from the misty forests of the Pacific Northwest to the sun-soaked beaches of Southern California. It’s truly the “best of the West.”

Canada's best wildlife encounters on a small-ship cruise of British Columbia

A small-ship cruise around the maze of islands scattered off the remote north coast of Vancouver Island reveals some of British Columbia's most magnificent wildlife.

A sea otter on its back.

Vancouver Islanders have a name for the few weeks in late summer when whales can be spotted from ships close to shore: ‘humpback soup’. Like a pot on the boil, the sea churns over this period with heaving, grey muscle, all popping and roiling and slapping the surface with barnacle-crusted flukes, so close you can hear the wind-tunnel roar of air being sucked wetly into gargantuan lungs.

Whale-watching — normally a sedate activity — practically becomes an adrenaline sport, involving many unsteady sprints from port to starboard and back again for a triumphant glimpse of a tail fin or a gut punch of lingering spray.

Cetacean-spotting here offers rich pickings, but the Johnstone Strait — a narrow and, on the surface, completely unremarkable channel cleaving the northeast shore of Vancouver Island from craggy mainland British Columbia — is particularly notable for its high number of humpback sightings. But myriad other species call these shores home, among them galumphing, salt-crusted grizzlies, skulking black bears and rare fish-eating sea wolves, as well as porpoises, dolphins and cougars. Bald eagles also perch imperiously on the island’s coniferous fringes, their white heads starkly contrasting with the green, feathery fronds.

For Canadian wildlife, there are few better places — and for orca, there are few better places in the world. There are three kinds that ply the waters here: the vocal ‘residents’, which feast on the salmon that wash silvery life into the waterways every summer; the ‘transients’ — seal-eating, sneaky and wolf-like in their ‘pack’ behaviour, and silent unless celebrating a meal; and the elusive and mysterious ‘offshores’, which ply deeper waters and are rarely seen.

The only way in or out of this maze of waterways is by seaplane — a wide-angled, often wide-eyed perspective that misses the finer details — or by boat. On a small-ship cruise, those finer details — and the essence of what this stretch of coast is about — come into focus: the cathedral-like hush beneath the rainforest canopy, the heavy scent of sap hanging like incense in the air; the sound of beachcombing grizzly bears crunching mussels like breakfast cereal; the briny tang of nibbled samphire, plucked fresh from the intertidal zone from aboard a rigid inflatable boat. And the sight of a mighty black fin — not glimpsed from above but at eye level — cleaving the waves just beyond the bow.

A sailboat on the water, trees lining the shore behind.

The journey always begins in Port McNeill, a picturesque community overlooking the water on Vancouver Island’s northeast coast, and from there days are flexible and easygoing, taking the ship wherever the wind and the wildlife sightings lead; time seems to slow, dictated by the turning of the tides. Occasionally, if weather conditions allow, the mighty sails can be unfurled and the engine can be switched off, so the only sounds are the puffing blows of cruising whales and the washing of the waves over the bow.

From the Johnstone Strait, pit stops include West Cracroft Island, where the Pig Ranch Trail is popular for its mighty cedars, which troop like evergreen giants towards the shallows to meet the fiery orange seaweed; the sandy banks of the Otter River, which are crisscrossed with wolf tracks; and Knight Inlet, a lagoon of aquamarine water occasionally traversed by families of swimming bears. This labyrinth of islands is at the centre of a rich natural world, in a place where gradually all lingering thoughts of modern life drift away with the tides.

Cruise ship worker accused of stabbing 3 people in B.C. waters

35-year-old worker allegedly stabbed a woman and 2 security guards on board ship bound for alaska.

A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska's capital city of Juneau, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel in B.C. waters, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney's office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital city of Juneau, and British Columbia.

The alleged stabbing happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the "late evening" Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical centre for an evaluation.

While there, he "became irrational and attempted to leave," and "physically attacked" a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states.

He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a "shipboard jail," the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney's office says.

A Norwegian Cruise Line worker is accused of stabbing people on board with scissors

  • A cruise ship worker was accused of stabbing a passenger and attacking crew members.
  • The incident occurred on the Norwegian Encore on its voyage to Alaska from Seattle, AP reported.
  • The worker was arrested and faces assault charges, the district attorney's office said.

A cruise ship employee was arrested after he allegedly used scissors to stab three people aboard a ship that was traveling to Alaska.

The employee, identified as Ntando Sogoni from South Africa, had recently started working on Norwegian Encore, a ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line,.

According to AP News , which cited an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the ship disembarked from Seattle on Sunday and was scheduled to stop in Alaskan ports, including Junea, during the weeklong voyage.

Sogoni, 35, was on duty on Monday when he began to exhibit "unusual and irrational behaviour," a spokesperson for the Norwegian Cruise Line told Business Insider. He allegedly tried to deploy a lifeboat from the ship, according to a press release issued by the district attorney's office .

According to the FBI, Sogoni was taken to the ship's medical center for examination, where he then "physically attacked" a security guard and a nurse before using a pair of scissors to stab a passenger who was being examined.

Sogoni allegedly stabbed the passenger several times in her arm, hand, and face. A security guard who intervened was stabbed in the head, while a second security guard was stabbed in the back and shoulders, authorities said.

The conditions of the passenger and staff are unknown, though AP News reported that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The ship was traveling west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, when the alleged incident took place, the publication added.

Sogoni was held in the ship's jail before being arrested in Juneau on Tuesday.

Sogoni is facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. He could face up to 10 years in prison in addition to a $250,000 fine for each count if convicted, they added.

The cruise industry made $19 billion in revenue in 2022, according to the online data platform Statista .

The US Department of Transportation keeps a record of reported crimes on cruise ships through quarterly reports. According to a recent cruise line incident report , 47 alleged incidents were reported to the FBI between January and March of this year.

Of the incidents reported, eight were recorded as assault with serious bodily injury, one was recorded as a missing US national, and six alleged thefts of under $10,000 were reported. There were also 16 cases categorized as "sexual assault," and a further 16 were categorized as "sexual assault — rape."

The district attorney's office, Juneau's police department, and Sogoni's lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
