bruce springsteen u.s. tour

At last, Bruce Springsteen fans can let go over their angst over whether the performer will reach Los Angeles and many other areas left off the first leg of his U.S. tour this year… and move on to the angst of the difficulty of getting tickets. The fact that some of the added gigs are in stadiums instead of arenas may ameliorate at least some of those concerns, though.

Popular on Variety

Out west, where the dates go indoors and into arenas instead of stadiums, hopes will be particularly high that added shows are in the cards, even though he is playing mostly single-nighters in arenas on the first leg. In L.A., two dates at the Forum have been announced, which is unlikely to meet demand. Springsteen used to play as many as seven nights at the now-demolished Sports Arena, although he stopped there for only three when he closed the place down in March 2016 on the E Street Band’s “The River” tour.

Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan pre-registration page for the tour is open through the end of the day this coming Sunday and can be found here .

LOS ANGELES, CA — Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have added three California concert dates — including two concerts at the Kia Forum in Inglewood and one in San Francisco — to close out the band's mega 2023 tour.

Tickets for the new dates will go on sale through the controversial Ticketmaster Verified Fan program Feb. 19, and the on-sale date for Southern California's Dec. 4 and Dec. 6 concerts is Feb. 23.

The Boss added 18 additional dates to their current tour Tuesday. The tour is Springsteen’s first in six years. It began earlier this month on the East Coast.

So far, Springsteen has stuck to a set list of about 27 to 28 songs, USA Today reported Tuesday.

After the first part of the North American part of tour ends on April 14, Springsteen and the E Street Band will travel overseas for a series of shows between April and July. The band will return to North America in August to finish out the tour in California.

Springsteen adds 18 cities to 2023 tour, including in Canada, California

The summer (and fall) leg is here!

bruce springsteen tour los angeles 2023

Details below, via BruceSpringsteen.net:

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have announced additional North American dates on their 2023 international tour in 18 cities, with newly-added shows beginning at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on August 9 and running through December 8 at San Francisco’s Chase Center. Multiple nights have been scheduled for Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park (August 16 and 18), New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium (August 30 and September 1), Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena (November 14 and 16) and Los Angeles’ Kia Forum (December 4 and 6). Tickets for the 22 added North American shows will go on sale over the course of the next two weeks, with the first onsale beginning this Friday February 19 at 10 am local time (full details below).

The 2023 international tour began February 1 in Tampa, Florida with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band’s first North American show in seven years. Opening night featured a high-energy 28-song set which included rocking fan favorites like “Born To Run,” “Prove It All Night,” and “Wrecking Ball,” with The E Street Band effortlessly shifting to soul and R&B while complemented by a horn section and backing vocalists. Rolling Stone called the band’s return “ecstatic and emotional,” and SPIN added it was a “must-see.” USA Today said they “rocked like their lives depended on it” and the Associated Press noted the “energy was as high as ever…every song seemed epic.”

For many cities, the tour will be using Verified Fan via Ticketmaster. Verified Fan requires pre-registration at https://verifiedfan.ticketmaster.com/springsteen and is open through Sunday February 19 at 11:59 pm ET. Verified Fan is intended to make it easier for fans to get tickets, and harder for resellers and bots.

For more information about Verified Fan visit: https://blog.ticketmaster.com/bruce-springsteen-e-street-band-2023/

Tickets for Wrigley Field and Citizens Bank Park will be sold directly by the stadiums.

Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band

Very good news for Bruce Springsteen fans. Springsteen and his E Street Band have added 18 cities to their U.S. leg of the tour, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The news comes as a relief to fans upset over the initial schedule that excluded any West Coast dates.

When the initial tour dates were announced, there was speculation that Springsteen would be performing at West Coast festivals, hence no tour dates in Los Angeles or San Francisco. But ultimately, the festivals did not pan out and the additional dates were added.

The 2023 international tour began February 1 in Tampa, Florida with Springsteen and the band’s first North American show in seven years. Opening night featured a high-energy 28-song set which included fan favorites such as “Born To Run,” “Prove It All Night,” and “Wrecking Ball.”

E Street band members guitarist Steven Van Zandt and violinist/singer Soozie Tyrell missed shows Friday in Dallas after testing positive for Covid-19. The band is scheduled to perform tonight in Houston, and Springsteen is hoping everyone stays healthy.

Van Zandt assured fans on Twitter that he was recovering well. “Thank you all for your best wishes and positive vibes,” he wrote. “I’ve got a very mild case and hope to be back for Houston or Austin at the latest.” In a follow-up tweet, Van Zandt said he had received both the COVID-19 vaccine and a booster. “That’s why it’s a mild case. No real danger or damage,” he wrote.

Bruce Springsteen delivered the Valentine’s Day gift that his California fans had been waiting months for:

Three concert dates in the Golden State.

That’s right, Boss fans. Having omitted California on the first batch of highly anticipated announced concert dates, Springsteen and his mighty E Street Band announced on Feb. 14 that they are adding shows in both Northern and Southern California.

The group is set to perform Dec. 4 and 6 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood — making for one of relatively few two-night stands on Springsteen’s docket — as well as Dec. 8 at Chase Center in San Francisco.

The Verified Fan on sale procedure — which “is intended to make it easier for fans to get tickets, and harder for resellers and bots,” according to Springsteen’s website — begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 23. The process requires fans to pre-register, which they can do now through 8:59 PT Feb. 19 at https://verifiedfan.ticketmaster.com/springsteen .

For details about Verified Fan, visit: https://blog.ticketmaster.com/bruce-springsteen-e-street-band-2023/ .

Los Angeles and San Francisco are among the 18 cities that have been added to Springsteen’s 2023 tour.

* Not sold on Ticketmaster.

—————————————————————————————————————–

UPDATE (Feb 14):

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have added new dates to their 2023 tour!

*No registration or Verified Fan code required. Visit brucespringsteen.net for onsale information for these shows.

The tour is continuing to leverage Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan technology to ensure more tickets get into the hands of concertgoers. Verified Fan requires registration to help filter out buyers looking to resell tickets, so more tickets get to fans who are going to hold on to tickets and attend the show.

Registration for the newly announced dates is now open HERE through Sunday, February 19 at 11:59pm ET.

How Verified Fan Registration Works:

Step 1: Registration

By registering for Verified Fan, you are letting us know you are a fan who is interested in purchasing tickets. From the registration page, you can sign in or create a new account to select your preferred show(s) and register your email and phone number. When completed, you’ll automatically receive a confirmation email letting you know we got your request.

Step 2: Verification

Next Ticketmaster vets your request by confirming it belongs to an individual – not a bot – and that it hasn’t been tied to irregular behaviors that could be a sign of a professional seller attempting to access the sale for purposes of reselling tickets.

Step 3: Access Code or Waitlist

When demand exceeds availability, a lottery-style process will determine which registered Verified Fans will receive a unique access code and which are put on the waitlist. You’ll receive an email on February 21 letting you know which group you’re in.

  • Access Code: If you receive an access code, it will be sent via text message. It is unique to your account, and will not work if anyone else enters it – do not try to sell or trade your code.
  • Waitlist: If tickets remain, we may text you an access code to join the ticket sale. The lottery-style process will be used to determine who gets off the waitlist.

Access to the Verified Fan Onsale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you get a code, be sure to join the sale promptly for the best chance to get tickets.

Who Will Get Access Codes to Participate in the Verified Fan Onsale? Demand for this tour is expected to be high. If there is more demand than there are tickets available, a lottery-style selection process will determine which registered Verified Fans get a unique access code and which are placed on the waitlist. A Verified Fan access code does not guarantee tickets, it just gives you access to join the sale. All tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. If tickets remain, the lottery-style process will be used to invite more Verified Fans from the waitlist to join the sale.

Common Questions

When is the verified fan registration period, can i change my selection, i have received an access code for multiple dates, will i be able to buy tickets for any of them.

Yes, even if you have already received an access code for your first choice of show date, and are invited to your 2nd or 3rd choice events and receive an access code, you will be able to shop for tickets for each show you are selected for. If you do receive a unique access code make sure that you use the onsale link provided as your code will only work for that specific show.

I received a registration confirmation email, does that mean I will get tickets?

When will i receive an email letting me know if i'll receive a unique access code or be placed on the waitlist.

This email will include the date and time for your Verified Fan Onsale. Not all shows will be going on sale at once.

Reminder:   Access to the Verified Fan Onsale does not guarantee tickets. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. So if you get a code, be sure to join the sale promptly at the time stated in your email for the best chance to get tickets.

When submitting my registration I received a six-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the Verified Fan sales?

Does registering mean i get a verified fan access code, does getting an access code mean i will get tickets, if my market has multiple shows, may i register for each, can i register for verified fan if i don’t live in the u.s. or canada.

For more information about Verified Fan, please visit our   Verified Fan FAQ.

Info subject to change at any time.

Previous Updates: July 12, 2022 Note: The below information does not apply to the added tour dates announced for 2023.

Bruce springsteen and the e street band announce 2023 u.s. tour dates.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are hitting the road on their 2023 Tour with shows across the U.S. and want to make sure their fans have access to tickets.

Demand is expected to be high for these shows, so registering for Verified Fan is your best chance at getting tickets to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band live. While Verified Fan doesn’t guarantee that everyone who registers will get a ticket, it does help ensure only fans are invited to purchase tickets.

Read on for information about how to register for your chance to buy tickets.

How many shows can I register for?

You may register for up to five (5) shows. When doing so, please be sure to rank your show preferences in order from highest to lowest. Please note: Registering for multiple shows does not guarantee that you will be selected for all shows you’ve ranked. If demand for tickets from verified fans exceeds supply for a given show, invitations may be subject to availability.

How many tickets can I purchase?

Fans may purchase a maximum of four (4) tickets per show they have been invited to shop for during the Verified Fan Onsale using their unique access code. The 4 tickets can be a combination of Reserved seating and General Admission (no seats – standing only). Maximum two (2) GA tickets per show. Fans will be able to select General Admission and Reserved seating in the same transaction. If you are selected for multiple shows, you will receive one (1) code for each show.

Can I change or update the shows I register for?

Yes, you can update your show preferences any time before registration ends. To do so, return to the Verified Fan registration link and click “edit entry”. Only your last selections will be considered once registration closes.

Can I register more than once to increase my invitation status?

No, only one registration is permitted per person.

When does Verified Fan registration close?

Registration closes on Sunday, July 17 at 11:59PM ET.

When does the Verified Fan Onsale begin?

All Verified Fan Onsales will run 10AM – 2PM local venue time. Verified Fan Onsale dates will vary by show. A full list of show + onsale dates can be found below.

Access codes are never guaranteed, and due to anticipated demand, fans are selected at random to receive an invitation to shop for tickets during the Verified Fan Onsale.

When submitting my registration I received a 6-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the Verified Fan Onsale?

No, if selected for the Verified Fan Onsale you will receive a new, unique, alphanumeric access code the night prior to your show(s) going on sale. The previous 6-digit authentication code you received when registering was sent to verify your mobile phone number. It cannot be used to purchase tickets.

I received a confirmation email, what does that mean?

This email is to confirm your details and that we successfully received your registration. It doesn’t, however, guarantee you’ll receive an invitation to purchase tickets. On Tuesday, July 19, you’ll receive an email with additional information about your invitation status.

Only fans who have been verified and invited to shop by receiving an access code will have the opportunity to purchase tickets during the Verified Fan Onsale.

Receiving an access code means that you’ll have the opportunity to shop for tickets. However, the ability to purchase tickets is determined by supply and demand, and is not guaranteed. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

If selected, fans will also receive a text message to the number provided during registration. This text will include a unique access code and a link to shop. Keep an eye out for this text and be careful not to accidentally delete it.

The Waiting Room will open 10 minutes before the sale begins. You may only join the Waiting Room using the same Ticketmaster account that you registered with.

When the sale begins, fans in the Waiting Room will be assigned a spot in line. When it is your turn to shop, you must enter your access code exactly as it appears to access tickets.

Can I share my access code with my friends or family?

To purchase tickets with your unique code during the Verified Fan Onsale, you must be logged in to the Ticketmaster account you registered with. Your access code is unique to your account and for this reason, fans will not be able to share their codes with friends or family.

What device should I use to purchase tickets?

All ticket purchases must be made online. Please be prepared to shop for tickets using your computer, mobile web, or Ticketmaster app. Tickets will not be available by phone.

Can I sign into the same Ticketmaster account on multiple devices to shop?

No, when you sign into the same account on multiple devices it may result in errors and/or limit you from shopping during the Verified Fan Onsale. Before the sale begins, please double check you are only signed into the Ticketmaster account you registered with on one device.

How many tabs can I have open at once?

Please only open one tab, per show.

You may only use multiple tabs on the same device when shopping for more than one show (if you received an invitation to multiple shows). As a reminder:

  • If you’d like to shop for tickets to multiple shows, you will need to join the Waiting Room for each one.
  • Please only join the Waiting Room once and only use one tab per show to reduce any delays.
  • Once you join the Waiting Room, do not close your page.

Is it true only one device is allowed per WiFi network and others will be blocked?

No. Fans using a public or shared WiFi network, no matter how many people are sharing, will NOT be blocked from shopping for tickets. We encourage everyone to sign into their own Ticketmaster account and join the Waiting Room 10 minutes before the sale begins.

I got an email telling me that I’m on the Waitlist, what does that mean?

Due to extremely high demand, not all fans who register may be invited to purchase tickets during the Verified Fan Onsale. Should additional tickets become available, a select number of registered fans may be randomly selected to move off the waitlist. If this happens, you will be notified via text message.

Will there be a way to purchase tickets other that the Verified Fan Onsale?

Registering for Verified Fan is the best way to ensure you have a chance to purchase tickets. If you did not register, you will not be able to participate in the Verified Fan Onsale. However, if tickets remain after the Verified Fan Onsale ends at 2PM local time, those tickets will be available to purchase for all fans the same day at 3PM with no code required.

For the shows at Toyota Center (Houston, TX), Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia, PA), Barclays Center (Brooklyn, NY) and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (Cleveland, OH), a General Onsale will begin at 10am local time on their respective on-sale dates with no Verified Fan code required. Visit  brucespringsteen.net  for more info on these shows.

Why do I see tickets available to purchase on another site before the Verified Fan Sale has even happened?

Many unofficial sellers will list tickets before they even go on sale. This practice is called speculative listing and fans should not trust resellers claiming to have tickets. Those speculative listings are not real tickets in hand. Beware of these sellers. Learn more about spec tickets  here .

What are the health check requirements?

In the best interest of fans and staff, the Event Organizer is monitoring local COVID-19 trends and will meet or exceed protocols mandated by local governments and local venues. Bruce Springsteen’s Los Angeles Show: 7 Major Takeaways

Bruce Springsteen

On Thursday, April 4, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band delivered its first of two headlining shows at Los Angeles’ The Forum — and it was a rousing, and lengthy, experience.

The trek, which kicked off mid-March in Phoenix (after being rescheduled from 2023 due to Springsteen’s peptic ulcer disease) has already produced headline-worthy highs, from the legendary rocker appearing on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm to crack jokes with Larry David about the delayed outing to signing a student’s absent note from school during his San Francisco show.

And that’s not all The Boss has been up to. At the end of March — amidst his own World Tour — Springsteen appeared as a guest performer during Zach Bryan’s headlining show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center alongside Maggie Rogers.

But tonight, the focus was all Springsteen from beginning to end — as both the opening and closing song featured the legend standing alone under a single spotlight. There were no special guests (other than his wife Patti Scialfa) and no major surprises (other than a few setlist additions of songs making their tour debut), but there was one key identifier of tonight’s show: its length.

As any fan should know, attending a Springsteen show is not only a sonic journey but a test of physical endurance. And for his first L.A. show, Springsteen came out swinging. The setlist included 32 songs and spanned three-and-a-half hours; judging by his wide smile and general exuberance throughout, it appeared as if he could have gone even longer.

“It’s like he doesn’t want to stop,” observed one fan. But all good things do indeed come to an end — and eventually, Springsteen walked off stage for good, for now.

Below are the seven most impressive takeaways from Springsteen’s L.A. show — including, of course, that infamous nonstop drive.

360° Engagement Is Possible (For a Rare Few)

For the first of Springsteen’s two sold-out shows at the Forum, there was – as expected – not a single empty seat in the entire venue.

The seats behind the stage were filled, with every single row up to the ceiling packed with fans, while the floor seats extended from end-to-end and reached as far as the back wall. Plus – and also as expected – Springsteen made sure to engage the entire room throughout the set, performing parts of songs, including hits like “Hungry Heart,” to the back of the stage, facing those who were more than happy to just be in the room.

There Are Benefits To Starting The Night Early (That Don't Include Going To Bed Early)

Minutes before 8 p.m. (at 7:54, to be exact), Springsteen lets out a signature “1, 2, 3, 4” followed by the bluesy rock riff to John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” as a single spotlight illuminates Springsteen’s silhouette. Yet, soon enough, the stage lights are brought up to reveal the 17 musicians on stage with Springsteen, including, of course, the famous E Street Band.

Though the earlier start time accounts for the lengthier set time, beginning while there’s still a touch of daylight to be found is a rare but welcome move — and also helps ignite the high-energy that Springsteen manages to maintain throughout the duration of the show, and demands back from each and every fan.

His Generosity Is Second Nature

Just under an hour into the show and Springsteen can’t help but give his fans his all – quite literally. At one point, he gifts his harmonica to a fan in the general admission front row (it’s replaced by another later in the show) and then, before walking back to center stage, he reaches deep into his pocket and finds a guitar pick, which he tosses to another fan before diving into the next hit.

There's Always Room For a Setlist Surprise (Or Three)

“We have a very special night prepared, Los Angeles,” teases Springsteen, who then welcomes his wife, Patti Scialfa, on stage to duet on “Tougher Than the Rest” – but that’s not all. “My baby’s back,” declares Springsteen right after, telling the crowd, “We haven’t done this song in a long time, Patti has never done it, I don’t think.” He then tells her to “sing over here,” placing her at the center stage mic and letting her take the lead on an acoustic rendition of “Fire.”

For good measure, Springsteen throws in one more oldie but goodie: “Jole Blon.” The addition is thanks to a handmade, spray-painted sign from a fan (which also notes that it is their 131st time seeing Springsteen live). “This sign is impossible to read…. Can anybody read this thing? What is it?” laughs Springsteen. After the crowd helps him out, he declares, “We haven’t played this in many years, but we’re going to play it right now!”

His Stamina Will Never Not Be Shocking

At 9:12 p.m. – one-and-a-half hours into the set – Springsteen asks, “Good evening Los Angeles, are we having fun yet? ‘Cause we ain’t started to have fun yet… this is all pre-fun…We are here to wake you up and shake you up and take you to higher ground…We planned on sending you home with your feet hurting and your hands hurting and your ass in paralysis and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Nearly two hours later, and he’s still going – and showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. At 11:03 p.m. he asks, “Do you have anything left?!” before taking a final bow as one last chorus of “BRUCE” chants echo throughout the arena. But even still, that wasn’t the end, as Springsteen fits in one final song – a solo, acoustic delivery of “I’ll See You In My Dreams” – before finally wrapping at 11:13 p.m. – nearly three-and-a-half hours after he started. And without a single break.

He Can Make a Big Room Feel Small

Springsteen manages to make a room full of nearly 20,000 fans feel just as intimate as a showing of Springsteen on Broadway – both in terms of how he talks to his fans, much like he’s catching up with longtime friends, and in terms of the stripped-down delivery of a handful of songs. At one point, as Springsteen begins to tell the story of how he got his start in music – “In 1965 I was 15 and I’d been playing guitar for six months …” – one fan whispers to their friends, “This is a great story,” with such excitement at the chance to hear it again. And later on, when Springsteen delivers a solo acoustic performance of “Last Man Standing,” every single person remains seated, and silent, as if holding their breath as to not miss a single note.

His Wisdom Is The Set's Special Sauce

“Death brings a certain clarity, and grieving is the price we pay for love,” Springsteen says while introducing “Last Man Standing” – and it’s a sentiment he revisits more than once throughout the set. While pondering immortality – and perhaps the “why” of it all – he tells the crowd, “I don’t know where we go when all of this is over, but I know what remains. The only thing I can guarantee tonight is that if you’re here and we’re here, then those that are missing are here with us,” before performing “My City of Ruins.”

Springsteen later makes sure to end the enthralling and seemingly never-ending evening on the same note, performing the emotive “I’ll See You In My Dreams” while standing alone on stage with nothing more than his guitar and harmonica, illuminated once more by a single beam of light. And as the clock nears midnight, the song’s title will be true for many fans who will surely be replaying this night when they close their eyes to sleep.

Bruce Springsteen returns to the stage after health issues postponed his 2023 world tour

In september, springsteen announced his tour would be delayed until 2024, citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease, by ross d. franklin | the associated press • published march 20, 2024 • updated on march 20, 2024 at 5:35 am.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage Tuesday evening at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour.

In September Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024 , citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease.

“The Boss” arrived on stage to an audience chorus of “Bruuuuce!” Wearing dark jeans and a rolled up red plaid flannel shirt, he had the energy of a man half his age. His signature “One, two, three, four” was the only thing that separated most songs, showing no signs of his illness from the previous year. Once he shouted, “Good evening, Arizona” the show was off and running.

Springsteen spoke to the crowd briefly about his illness prior to playing his final song “I’ll See You In My Dreams” solo on stage. “Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time. . . . I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

The 29-song show came in just under three hours, but “The Boss” hardly broke a sweat while showing off a strong voice, all the while dancing, tearing into guitar solos, playing the harmonica and even ripping his shirt open near the end of the show.

On stage with Springsteen was the legendary E Street Band which features drummer Max Weinberg, bassist Garry Tallent, keyboardists Roy Bittan and Charlie Giordano, guitarists Stevie Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, saxophonist Jake Clemons — nephew of original and still missed sax man Clarence Clemons who died in 2011 — guitarist and violin player Soozie Tyrell, a full horn and brass section and four backup vocalists. The only missing member of the band was Springsteen’s wife, singer and guitarist Patti Scialfa.

Springsteen performed most of the hits in his vast collection, minus “Born In The U.S.A.,” but he added covers “Nightshift” by the Commodores, “Because The Night” by Patti Smith Group, and a surprise: “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. Fans went wild for “No Surrender,” “Born To Run,” “Rosalita,” “Dancing In The Dark,” “Glory Days” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" that left the rocker grinning from ear-to-ear as he conducted fans singing along like his own chorus.

This year has been particularly challenging for Springsteen. In addition to his health issues, in January his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, a fan favorite who could frequently be seen dancing at his shows, died. She was 98.

Two days after her death, Springsteen performed at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event , which honored Jon Bon Jovi for his musical achievements and philanthropic efforts.

The 2024 edition of the tour kicked off in Phoenix and ends Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Canada. It hits 17 countries across 52 dates, including a special performance on Sept. 15 where Springsteen will headline the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Jon Bon Jovi Says Bruce Springsteen Is Like a 'Big Brother': We're on a 'Whole Different Level of Friendship' (Exclusive)

Bruce Springsteen appears in the new docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,' streaming on Hulu on April 26

Few artists have more hometown pride than New Jersey natives Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen — so it should be no surprise that two of the Garden State’s favorite sons have forged a fruitful friendship.

Bon Jovi, 62, opens up to PEOPLE about his bond with The Boss, 74, explaining that while he considered Springsteen “a hero growing up,” he now knows him as a friend.

“Our connection is deep, on a whole different level of friendship, because how many guys can talk like we can talk, in close quarters, about life and love and loss?” he says, joking that Springsteen is “the Ghost of Christmas Future” due to their age gap and similar life paths. “Our relationship is deep, and he’s a dear friend of mine, and he really is like a big brother.”

The “Livin’ on a Prayer” rocker grew up in Sayreville, about 18 miles from Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold. On one fateful night in the late 1970s, when he was still in high school, Bon Jovi performed a Springsteen cover at a local venue — only for Springsteen himself to show up and join him.

“It was so inspirational because those records by the [Asbury] Jukes, and by Bruce, were written and sung by guys in our backyard,” he says. “They weren’t the centerfolds of Circus magazine that made the dream just out of reach. These guys were capable of making the impossible seem possible.”

The early duet is a moment Bon Jovi reflects upon in the new docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (streaming Friday, April 26 on Hulu). In the series, he says he was singing a cover of “The Promised Land” when The Boss appeared.

“I looked up, and there’s Bruce onstage with me. That was the guy,” he says in the docuseries. “And he jumps up and sings his song with me…. So you go to high school the next day. Needless to say, you look at the teacher and you look at the kids, and you go, ‘I got a story to tell!’ and it’s a lot better than history class.”

Springsteen also appears in Thank You, Goodnight , and offers his initial impression of the young rocker.

“I like to play. I think that was [what I heard], ‘There’s some young kid running around here from New Jersey, he’s making some kind of noise,’” he says. “That was the first thing I knew about Jon. He’s a hardworking guy, put everything he had into his music… We’ve become much closer, probably as we’ve gotten older here, you know, recently, as being the only two guys in the same game here.”

Later in the series, Bon Jovi — who will release the new album Forever on June 7 — reveals that he and Springsteen take long drives together, with no phones and no radio to distract them, sometimes “for 100 miles.”

“It means the world to me, someone who’s a step down the road, on the journey,” says Bon Jovi. “One time, a few years back, when we were comparing where we were in our lives as it pertained to life, journey, career, he brought up that word of mortality, and that never crossed my mind at that time. And I was like, ‘Oh yeah, mortality, that’s still on the horizon.’ So I have a different perspective now.”

Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band European tour: Thrills, spills and star power

bruce springsteen tour los angeles 2023

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band have conquered Europe — and there's more to come.

Band members are heading home for a short break after 12 shows into the band's European stadium tour.

The reviews are glowing.

“This is a show to live long in the memory,” said the Independent of Ireland after the band's May 7 concert at the RDS Arena in Dublin.

Yet, there have been a few moments of notoriety over the run that make this tour, the pedestrianly named “2023 Tour,” one that will be discussed for a long time after the final encore.

The tour resumes June 11 in the Netherlands and comes back the States starting with Aug. 9 and 11 at Wrigley field in Chicago. The big ones for Jersey fans are Aug. 30, Sept, 1 and 3 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Here's a look at highlights, and some diversions, of the just completed first half of the European run.

First Lady at first show

The reviews are in, former First Lady Michelle Obama was a hit at the April 28 show at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. Obama, actress Kate Capshaw and E Street Band member Patti Scialfa joined the Boss and the band during the “Glory Days.”

Obama had a tambourine and it wasn't just for show.

“How cool is my wife!' said former President Barack Obama at the show, as captured on Michelle's Instagram.

Springsteen visits family roots in Ireland

The Boss connected with his Irish ancestors in County Kildare in Ireland as the E Street Band played three shows, May 5, 7 and 9, at the RDS Arena in Dublin.

The Boss' kin on his father's side came from Kildare in the mid 1800s. Springsteen made a surprise visit to the Creative Performance Academy in Kildare and sang an a cappella version of his 1984 hit “My Hometown” with the ladies at a local pub in Kildare on May 4.

“You guys, I’m firing the E Street Band and I’m hiring you,” said Springsteen to laughter.

Prior to his Kildare jaunt, Springsteen visited Shane MacGowan of the Pogues in his Dublin home. MacGowan, who has used a wheelchair since breaking his pelvis in 2015, is suffering from encephalitis.

Tragedy in Italy

The show must go on is a revered show business adage.

Yet, many questioned if the Springsteen and E Street Band show May 18 in Ferrara, Italy, should have proceeded as the venue was about 30 miles from the Emilia-Romagna area in northern Italy, where rains, flooding and mudslides killed more than a dozen people.

Some were disappointed the show went on and some fans were disappointed that there was no reference to the situation during the show. Springsteen has a long history of connecting his shows with the plights of those around the world. During an August 2016 concert t MetLife Stadium, he dedicated “My City of Ruins” to the victims of the recent earthquake in the Apennines Mountains of central Italy.

Guitarist Steven Van Zandt said on Twitter a week after the show the band was not aware of the situation in Emilia-Romagna.

“We didn’t know a thing about it,” said Van Zandt on Twitter. “All we heard was the crew had to work overtime because the venue was one big mud hole from the rain. That was all.”

Boss falls in Amsterdam

Springsteen has climbed, slid, crowd surfed, danced and jumped off pianos in concert over the years.

On May 27 at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, he tripped and fell during “Ghosts.” The 73-year old Boss didn't stay on the ground for long.

“Goodnight everybody!” Springsteen joked.

He was helped up by stage hands and guitarist Nils Lofgren and continued the show.

The tour's multi-level staging does seem to have its share of stairs, which Springsteen climbs nightly.

“With stairs like that, baby we were born to fall,” commented a fan.

E Street Band pre-concert warm up

What do the members of the E Street Band do to get ready for the show?

They apparently dance like Morris Day and the Time. E Street Band percussionist Anthony Almonte shared a video of him, guitarist Nils Lofgren, singer Curtis King and a fourth person dancing like Day and the Time to the Boss' “Ramrod” backstage earlier this week.

“We’re stepping up the Pre-Show Show, with our guest being the one and only Nils Lofgren!!” Almonte said. “Giving you a bit of The Time moves to Ramrod! Rock on y’all!”

Lofgren, who's been known to tap dance during his solo shows, also shared the vid.

Starpower in Europe

Stas and notables have flocked to the European shows.

That was especially true at the May 21 concert at the Circo Massimo in Rome where Woody Harrelson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Sting, Nick Cave, Lars Ulrich from Metallica, and Chris Rock attended.

“I just Met Chris Rock (heart emoji),” said Michelle Moore, member of the E Street Choir, on social media.

Rock posted a few snippets of the show to his Instagram story. One was Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt mugging it up or the camera on “Glory Days.” Another was a band shot during “Dancing in the Dark.”

If he wasn't a fan before the show, he's a fan now.

Jon Bon Jovi Reveals the Surprising Way How 'Spirit Sister' Shania Twain Helped Him Through Vocal Surgery (Exclusive)

The Bon Jovi rocker underwent vocal cord surgery in the summer of 2022, he reveals in his new Hulu docuseries, ‘Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,’ streaming now

When Jon Bon Jovi was struggling with vocal cord issues, he turned to a famous friend for advice: Shania Twain .

“She’s been my spirit sister in this,” Bon Jovi, 62, tells PEOPLE exclusively of the “Any Man of Mine” singer, 58, whom he reveals had the “same doctor” and “same surgery” a few years before his own.

In his  new Hulu docuseries , Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , the legendary rocker says he began experiencing issues with his vocal cords around 2015. But he didn’t finally address them until he had a “devastating” conversation with his wife Dorothea while on tour in 2022, and he realized he had two options: seek medical help or retire.

Bon Jovi turned to Twain — who had a vocal fold medialization procedure in 2018 — because “she's the only other one I've known that's ever had this surgery, with this doctor, and the only reason I found that out is because she reported it in the press,” he says of finding out they had the same doctor, Robert Sataloff.

Adds Bon Jovi: “Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I'd be out there a lot sooner than I have been. She says, ‘Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.' And so, I couldn't wait to get the operation.”

Bon Jovi had the surgery — which alleviated the loose vocal cords that were stealing his voice — in June of 2022. And this past February, he and Twain celebrated his post-op progress at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala, where Bon Jovi was the 2024 honoree (and Twain sang a cover of the Bon Jovi hit "Bed of Roses").

Now almost two years after he underwent the procedure, Bon Jovi works with vocal coaches and does daily voice exercises: “Every day is the recovery process,” he says.

The band will drop its 16th album, Forever , on June 7. Recorded after the surgery, Bon Jovi’s vocals may sound smokier and huskier but are no doubt his. However, his future as a live performer remains up in the air.

“I’m capable of singing. What I’m not necessarily capable of is two and a half hours a night, four nights a week,” Bon Jovi says, “but I’m aspiring to get that back.”

In early 1984, Bon Jovi emerged from the wilds of New Jersey to make its first appearance on Billboard’s Hot 100 with “ Runaway ,” a synthed-up pop-metal jam that frontman Jon Bon Jovi essentially willed to success by badgering a Long Island disc jockey to spin it on his air.

Forty years later, you never have to wait too long to hear Bon Jovi on the radio.

Thanks to inescapable hits like “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and the whoa-oh-ing “Livin’ on a Prayer,” the band has sold more than 100 million records and played virtually every arena (and many of the stadiums) on the planet; in 2009, Jon Bon Jovi and his longtime creative partner, guitarist Richie Sambora , were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2018 the group joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Now the band is recounting how it all happened in a four-part docuseries premiering Friday on Hulu. Directed by Gotham Chopra (son of the wellness icon Deepak Chopra), “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” covers the expected high points of the group’s ascent, including all those poufy-haired videos on MTV and Jon Bon Jovi’s turn as a Hollywood heartthrob. But it also goes behind the scenes to explore the singer’s unconventional takeover of the band’s business affairs in the early ’90s, Sambora’s departure in 2013 and Jon Bon Jovi’s recent surgery to correct a problem with his vocal cords.

The 62-year-old frontman spoke about the series during a recent visit to Los Angeles, not long after the band performed for the first time since 2022 — and with an appearance by Bruce Springsteen — when Jon Bon Jovi was honored as MusiCares’ Person of the Year. The group will release a new album, “Forever,” on June 7.

Why did you want to do this documentary? To mark that milestone of 40 years. I started thinking about it in Year 38 and thought, Who knows if there’ll be a 50th? Let’s mark this one. I’d seen “Man in the Arena,” Tom Brady’s docuseries, and I said, Who made this? He had an interesting take. Then I realized it was Deepak’s son. He was my first and only choice.

I assume Brady is a friend of yours. I’d like to think that I could call him my friend.

How does the guy in that doc compare to the dude you know? Oh, it’s Tommy. What I love about him is his work ethic. My philosophy is similar to his in that every day I’m aspiring to be a better version of me. I don’t ever want to be the fat Elvis. So Tommy was always someone I looked up to even though he’s 15, 16 years younger than me.

You call him Tommy. I do. I don’t know if anyone else does.

Taylor Swift turns heel, owning her chaos and messiness on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Swift’s 11th studio LP, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ released at midnight Eastern time, follows a busy period in the 34-year-old’s personal and professional spheres.

April 18, 2024

Do people call you JBJ? [Matthew] McConaughey started that. I love it.

Seems important that the subject of a documentary not be the person in control of it. I have nothing to hide. If I got punched in the nose by band members in the film, the sting puts you back on your heels and then you come out of it and you go, “I understand that.” So I lived with some of that, and I’m good with it. There’s a lot of warts in this film — things I might not even agree with, where one of the guys said they didn’t know if I was coming back [after starting a solo career]. I don’t know how you could say I wasn’t coming back — I’m the guy whose name is on the marquee. But I can live with all the truths in this picture. And I can promise you I didn’t take any of it out.

If Richie hadn’t agreed to be interviewed for the series, do you think you still could’ve done it? Certainly.

I kind of think not. Why?

His voice seems crucial to the viewer’s understanding of the deal between the two of you. As he says in the trailer, “I quit. I f—ed up.” We were in Calgary and he didn’t make it. I mean, car in the driveway, plane on the runway, suitcase in the trunk. We had a show that night. And this was the third time, not the first or second. We needed him to go to rehab again and he wouldn’t go. But it wasn’t like, “You’re out.” He was never fired. These were my brothers.

Bon Jovi

Do you know if Richie’s seen the doc? He came to watch it at my house in September. We screened it together.

What was that like? Great. There’s no animus. It’s 11 years ago.

Is he in a good place? Yeah, he’s writing and recording.

Have you listened to his solo stuff? I haven’t heard it.

Is the door open for him if he ever chooses to return? The door’s always open. There was never a fight — I keep saying that.

So these are your brothers. Yet, as you say, it’s your name on the marquee. How would you define Bon Jovi’s power structure? It’s a benevolent dictatorship. I’m the quarterback. It’s my vision — always was. It’s my record deal. The band were hired. Richie didn’t even take an integral role in the songwriting until the third album.

People in the band ever get salty about that arrangement? If they did, they didn’t tell me. But in retrospect everybody knows we had to have a vision. Somebody had to be the one to finally say, “I think we go this way.” You know, it was pretty f—ed-up for me to say, “I’m gonna manage the band.” The industry here in Los Angeles — everybody except me and our attorney — they said, “That’s career suicide.” But it wasn’t.

Review: Phish’s Las Vegas Sphere spectacle was the opposite of rock-star self-glorification

The veteran jam band took advantage of the venue’s cutting-edge technology while keeping the focus on its music and its community.

April 22, 2024

How old were you when you took over? 30.

Pretty young. Stupid. But it was great. I took it as far as I could, then it ran out and I couldn’t go any further.

Would your current manager, Irving Azoff, say you’d been an effective steward of your career? I hope so. But what Irving said to me was, “You’re an island.” And I completely heard that. Even though I’ve been going through health issues, he’s like, “That’s cool — go out when you want to go.” With all due respect to [Bon Jovi’s first manager, Doc] McGhee, when I was a kid our organization would just push us back out on the road. What I would tell a young band today is, “Take your time if you’re tired.” Kids talk now about mental health days. No such thing 35 years ago.

In the doc we see a lot of consternation about losing your voice. But one thing you’ve been fortunate not to lose is your hair. It’s all mine, bubba.

Has losing it ever been a fear? Please don’t shallow yourself by making this a hair article. I’ve way superseded all that nonsense.

My point is the fear bound up in vanity. I’m proud that I have no vanity in my hair or Botox or plastic surgery or a boob job at this point.

No work at all? None. This is me. Who the f— is brave enough to go gray at 50? Ask Bruce, OK? Ask Bono. Ask Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney .

bruce springsteen tour los angeles 2023

Speaking of which: Beatles or Stones? Tough question. My admiration for the Beatles’ songwriting and production — it’s still otherworldly. On the other hand, Jagger’s the greatest frontman — he’s the bar. I always say I wish he’d retire because then I’d know where the end zone is. I love the Rolling Stones . But we were more Beatles.

I’d agree with that. One reason why is that Bon Jovi never seemed leering in the way that some of your ’80s hair-metal contemporaries did. It always seemed like you were trying to— I wasn’t trying to be anything. I was only ever trying to be us. How that was perceived was everyone else’s business.

So you’re just not a leering guy. I’m not a leering guy.

Were you a partying guy? Define partying. Drinking? Sure. No drugs — never interested.

Because you’d seen too many cautionary tales? No constitution for it. And the cautionary tales. But it was more that the singer had to go home because he had work tomorrow. This was my job and my joy. Why would I ever want to f— it up for an old cliché?

How’s the voice at the moment? Work in progress. I’m an athlete coming back from an injury — Kobe Bryant with his Achilles torn off. Before I got on the plane this morning I was at vocal therapy. The goal is 2½ hours a night, four nights a week. I’m not ready to say we’re going on the road.

April 15, 2024

You sounded strong at MusiCares. Morning after that I woke up, first time in a decade that the only voice in my head was mine. Fear wasn’t there; doubt wasn’t there. I went, Hey, that was good. And it was fun. My wife texted the kids — she said, “He’s back.” And we don’t bulls— each other. So it’s promising.

You talk to Springsteen about your vocal trouble? Most definitely. He’s one of my closest friends. He’d pick me up and we’d take these drives and he’d be that shoulder to lean on. Then he got sick. But it wasn’t his vocal cords. He had an ulcer.

He’s said he didn’t know if he’d sing again. Did you ever think that was a possibility? I was more concerned for his health than for his singing. Because he’s just a robot — he can just do it. He’s never warmed up. He’s never taken a lesson. He thinks his wife [Patti Scialfa] and I are cuckoos because she does the same things I do. He’s like, “Both of you, I don’t get.”

A good number of the performers who saluted you at MusiCares were country acts: Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson , the War and Treaty. Modern country learned a lot from Bon Jovi records, not from Willie and Waylon and Kris. They’re more influenced by us than they were by the country standards.

You had a minute when you were making country music yourself. When we wrote “ Who Says You Can’t Go Home ,” Luke Lewis, who had the label Lost Highway, he said, “I think if you do that song with Jennifer Nettles, you can get on country radio.” Great idea — No. 1 song. Then we went, “These are the stories that we tell. We could do this all day long.” And we recorded the “Lost Highway” album. But country radio really only lets you in once. Kid Rock will tell you that; Sheryl Crow will tell you that. We learned that lesson too. But I felt very comfortable in that environment, so we still record albums in Nashville. Now we’re opening a bar down there — opens next month on Broadway.

Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi

Lot of competition on Broadway right now. Garth Brooks just opened a spot. So did Eric Church. I heard Morgan Wallen threw a chair off it.

You ever throw a chair off anything? Not a six-story building.

There’s a clip in the doc from an episode of “Siskel & Ebert” in the ’90s where Siskel is very enthusiastic about your move into acting. Was that gratifying? I studied for two years before I even went on an audition. And I had too much respect for the craft to ever think that I could get a role in a movie just because I was the singer in a rock band. So when I started to pursue acting, it was with all earnestness. I knew I was asking Mr. Producer to bet on me instead of fill-in-the-blank big actor.

And I did get a lot of good notices in the film business. But when I came out here [to L.A.] and said, “Why aren’t I getting bigger roles?” they said, “Because whenever you come, you show up for a minute and then you go on the road again. You’re not taking it serious.” Back then you didn’t get to do both. Will Smith had to choose. LL Cool J had to choose. Ice-T had to choose. Phil Collins, Madonna, Sting — you weren’t allowed. Then the caliber of the roles got lesser and lesser to the point where I wasn’t interested in doing it.

I remember sitting on the curb outside the old CAA building and shedding a tear after watching one of the piece-of-s— movies I was getting at that point because I wasn’t playing the game. That’s when I realized you have to commit like you do to making records.

What was the movie? A National Lampoon movie called “Pucked” [in 2006]. F—ing horrible hockey movie. It was heartbreaking. Earlier, when I was on the set of [2000’s] “U-571,” [film producer] Dino De Laurentiis is going, “You’re a movie star.” I’m like, OK, let’s go. But then right out of that we wrote “ It’s My Life .”

You’re saying you chose music. Easy.

How Jelly Roll overcame addiction and prison to become the new (tattooed) face of country

Jelly Roll is not your typical country star: His past includes prison, addiction and 20-plus records as a rapper. Now, he’s a favorite for multiple Grammy noms.

Oct. 10, 2023

“It’s My Life” has always felt to me like a pivot point for Bon Jovi — a rebirth or a reintroduction. It was one of the defining moments in our career. I had come home from making “U-571” — that was the movie where McConaughey dubbed me JBJ — and we had most of the “Crush” album written. Bruce Fairbairn was gonna come back and produce it. I literally walked in the house, the phone rang, I picked it up — still had my coat on — to find that Bruce had passed away. I was so shocked and dismayed. But then we had the opportunity to work with a young Max Martin, who flew from Sweden to New Jersey. I had this lyric: “Like Frankie said, ‘I did it my way.’” And Max, God bless him, came up with the riff.

He was in the middle of his run with Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys. Does “It’s My Life” sound different to you than any of Bon Jovi’s other monster hits? I think it still tells that optimistic story. People said, “Who’s Frankie?” That was me going, “I want to make movies and make records and I want to be involved in politics and social issues.”

People heard that song and didn’t understand you were talking about Sinatra? Nobody knew. They just thought we created another character like Tommy and Gina [from “Livin’ on a Prayer”]. In fact, I had to fight for that line with Richie. He was like, “Who gives a s— about Sinatra?” I go, “I do.” He says, “Well, you got to sing it every night.”

Do you plan to campaign for Joe Biden? I don’t have any plan. But if called upon I’m here to serve.

You think he’s the man for the job? I think the president has done a good job. It’s gonna be a tough election. There’s issues on both sides of the aisle — not a lot to be proud of in the House right now.

Is Biden too old to serve a second term? I’m not getting into this with you [ laughs ]. Go f— yourself.
