How Butch Walker Cracked the Live-Performance Code With Fist Pumps, High Kicks, and a Piano-Rocking New Album

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

It’s a hot late-summer Saturday at the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival outside Nashville, and Butch Walker has just jumped off the stage of the Americana Music Triangle tent and is wading into the crowd. About half the audience has never seen Walker perform before — he took an impromptu poll — and they look mesmerized by the lost art of showmanship he practices: the pick tosses, the high kicks, the fist pumps, and the journey into the people. Walker hops up on a rickety bench and enlists a fan to hold his mic while he continues to sing and bash away at his guitar. By the finale, a furious rendition of his 2006 T. Rex -style glam-rocker “Hot Girls in Good Moods,” he has the entire tent crouching in the grass, waiting for his signal to rise up and dance deliriously to the chorus.

“I don’t think I did?” Walker says, laughing off the compliment during an interview at his home studio in the hills of rural Tennessee. The Cartersville, Georgia, native and hot-shot producer for albums by Green Day and the Wallflowers — and a track on Red (Taylor’s Version) — is doing his best to appear humble. But even he seems to know that’s a silly task, after commanding a tent full of people just a week earlier to dance, shamelessly and badly, and have them actually do it.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Walker’s studio near Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, is a converted barn, painted black, with a stained-glass cathedral window, and a sign reading “The Butcher Shop” over the door. It’s stocked with too many guitars to count, a drum kit, and a Yamaha C3 Baby Grand that he says he purchased about 15 years ago with “my first-ever fuck-you money from music.” That particular piano plays a major role in Walker’s new album, Butch Walker as…Glenn , a freewheeling concept record about a bar-room musician that calls to mind the best of Seventies piano-rock. Think Elton, Zevon, and Billy Joel. Glenn is Walker’s middle name, and he conceived the character while producing an upcoming album by the singer-songwriter Morgan Kibby, on which she too inhabits a character. Hers goes by the name Sue Clayton, and she duets with “Glenn” on the standout track “State-Line Fireworks.”

“Sue Clayton is a washed-up, tragic widow, who maybe was an actress back in the day, and now lives in the Palm Springs desert doing phone sex as a side hustle,” Walker says. “We do a skit on her record where you hear a recording of her phone-sex greetings, and it’s me as a caller named Glenn. Morgan said, ‘Why don’t you make Glenn the character for your record?’”

The watson twins sang behind jenny lewis. now they own the spotlight, bethany cosentino leaves the drama behind on emotional new single 'easy'.

“It pissed off a lot of people, but it was people who I finally needed to see for who they really were,” he says. “I said, ‘I don’t give a fuck if I lose half of my little fanbase.’ The last thing I want is some shitty, racist, bigoted asshole singing every word to my songs at my shows, front row. That doesn’t make them awesome; that still makes them a shitty person. So I was really happy to thin the herd. But it was tough. There were awkward moments, with fans, friends, and family after that.”

Walker doesn’t wade into political issues on Glenn , but he does takes some astute, sharp jabs at gentrification and the influx of new neighbors (himself included) into established communities. “Now they’re mad at folks like me movin’ in/Avocado toast still fresh on our hands,” he sings in “Roll Away (Like a Stone),” speaking volumes with a simple nod to a basic brunch dish.

After living in Los Angeles and then splitting his time between L.A. and Nashville, Walker is now a full-time Tennessee resident. Ironically at this very moment, his home and studio are literally being rattled by construction next door, where an army of excavators are jack-hammering away at the bedrock so a new neighbor can begin building a mansion. Walker laughs at the situation. “I’m the statistic of people that leave L.A. because it was getting too ridiculous and come to the country,” he says. “So I’m like, this goes both ways. I come here to get my space and my peace of mind, and I’m still wearing Vans and a hat and looking for avocado toast, while out here, people are on tractors and at church. That’s what that song is about: No matter what, you’re never exempt. There’s always somebody more annoyed at you than you are at others.”

The Results Are In: Kendrick Lamar Won the Great Rap War

Everything that's happened in the drake-kendrick beef, tommy lee wins round in helicopter sexual assault lawsuit, tom brady briefly forgets what a roast is after jeff ross' robert kraft massage joke.

“I’ve watched other artists that I love my whole life. Some blow me away and leave me feeling like I left a church service. Others, I don’t ever need to see them again live,” he says, packing up his computer to head to his son’s school, where he’s recording his kid’s band for a class project.

“Years of being in a van and playing to the bartender will either completely jade you to the point of no return, or it will make you try your fucking hardest to win over the bartender,” Walker says. “That was all of the Nineties for me. But no matter the lane you pick, the common thing has been to connect with people in the audience. I get high from that.”

It's the morning of July 3, 2023, and the members of the Marvelous 3 are on Instagram live, beaming in on three screens from Tennessee, California and Georgia.

Singer and songwriter Butch Walker, bass player Jayce Fincher and drummer Doug Slug Mitchell, aka Mitch McLee, compare their love of coffee and oat milk as they look over vintage photos sent in by their fans for the sleeve of the band's latest and fourth album, called IV .

Fincher says he recognizes fan's faces. Walker laughs and says, "The only one I don't recognize is me."

Walker, a former Calvin Klein model, is dressed in a cozy plaid shirt, although these days he is often spotted in a black Bitter Southerner tee bearing the slogan, "Practice radical empathy" in all-caps.

In their 50s, the three are no longer the big-haired high school boys who left Rome, Ga., bound for Los Angeles and a five-year stint playing heavy glam rock with the group South Gang in the late 1980s and early '90s.

This weekend in Atlanta, the Marvelous 3 is reuniting to rock the rafters of the Tabernacle in support of its first new album in two decades.

The rock trio headlined the century-old venue, a former Baptist church in 2001. Since then, its front man, Walker, has carved out a solo career as a globetrotting producer of hits by Pink, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy.

Now he's enjoying a renewed interest in his own band's place in Georgia music history.

On a Zoom interview with GPB last week, Walker said he and his bandmates sold merch out of their van while performing 200 shows a year, with the dream of being rock stars.

"We moved out to L.A. straight out of high school, just to like to chase it and we chased it," he said. "We caught it, and then we lost it immediately, which was fine and good because we — really, I don't think our future was to be a notable hair metal band."

When the band returned to Georgia, members regrouped as the Floyds, named after their home county, and ultimately as Marvelous 3. The pointed rock songs from the M3's first album, Math and Other Problems weren't overly commercial, but did reflect the melting pot that was Atlanta's music scene in 1997, back when blending metal and new wave was like mixing oil and water.

"Being that the scene was so multicultural and multi-faceted and multi genre, we were able to be on bills all the time with people, like, in all walks of life," Walker remembered. "We had hip-hop guys coming to our shows all the time, and we had, you know, I remember Andre 3000 going and hanging out at rock shows all the time. And Cee-Lo would work over at my recording studio, and it was just a really cool thing, you know?"

1998's Hey! Album quickly followed. Walker credits Marvelous 3's career break to the Atlanta Alternative Rock Station 99X, where the track "Freak of the Week" went from locals only to No. 5 on the Billboard charts in 1999.

"I started getting calls all the time to produce records because of that song being a hit and people wondering who produced it," he said. "And that's how it worked in the industry, right? It was like record labels would be, like, 'Oh, this is a hot song right now. Who did it? Let's get them for this new band we signed.' And that's what started happening."

The group released a third album in 2000 and called it quits in 2001 due to conflicting commitments. However, the friendship between the members never waned, even though Walker's star rose as a producer for dozens of artists.

Over the past 22 years, Walker has amassed quite a catalog of writing and production credits, including 10 solo albums. He performed at Music Midtown in 2018 and released American Love Story , a concept album written after the 2016 election and the Charlottesville protests that told the story of political division and a reckoning with harsh truths about growing up in the South against anyone "who wasn't straight, white or Christian," he said in an  interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the time. He followed that up with Butch Walker as ... Glenn , an alter-ego, piano-based collection of 1970s-inspired easy rock ballads .

But after the pandemic, a Marvelous 3 reunion felt right.

"We parted the best of friends and stayed the best of friends," Walker said. "So it was never going to be rocket science getting everyone back together. It was more just like 'How?' and 'When?' And 'Does it matter?' Because it only matters for our friendship. Because outside of our fans — of that band, in particular —this is not something we realistically think is going to move the needle in the grand world scheme of music. We're not trying to be a relevant new band, is what I'm saying. And so, to do it, would only be to have fun."

Marvelous 3's latest songs pay homage to the band's Georgia roots in tracks like "My Old School, Metal Heart" and "Time to Let It Go," which are full of the humor and melodic choruses for which Walker is best known. He continues his tradition of using Atlanta places and street names with a mention of Moreland Avenue (past recordings have include mentions of Buckhead, Peachtree Battle, Grant Park and other locations). And there's a special song written by a fellow Atlanta band, The Producers: a Marvelous 3 cover of the group's classic 1982 power pop hit, "She Shelia." The Producers  performed the song during a co-headlining slot on a bill with Duran Duran at MTV's New Year's Rock 'N' Roll Ball on Dec. 31, 1982.

Walker said he first heard "She Sheila" when his sister's boyfriend's band played it at a bonfire back when he was a teen, and the idea of rerecording it in 2023 in honor of Atlanta's power pop lineage came up on the final day in the studio with Marvelous 3. They decided to mimic the song's iconic keyboard riff by Wayne Famous with their guitars.

"We just slammed it, and I was like, 'Of course we nailed that!' " he laughed. "We knew exactly, we knew that it was, like, in our veins for, you know, for years. It was really cool to put it on the new record and kind of wrap up the new album with that as an influence. Because a lot of people hear it now, and are just like, 'Wow, that's one of my favorite songs on the record.' And they don't even know it's a cover. I'm like, 'Well, there you go.' And I'm like, that's how strong the song is."

With dozens of 1980s and 1990s acts on the road this year and festivals such as the recent When We Were Young gathering in Las Vegas featuring the bands Blink 182 and 30 Seconds to Mars, Walker said the time was right for the reunion. And with sold-out shows in Atlanta and Chicago to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Hey! Album, putting out a fourth one wasn't a bad idea.

"We didn't fit in then, and we don't fit in now," Walker said. "So we didn't care about trying to like, 'Oh, maybe we can squeeze onto an emo show or something. It's not that. We're doing this for ourselves."

The Marvelous 3 perform at Atlanta's Tabernacle Oct. 27 through Oct. 29, 2023.

Nashville guitarist Grace Bowers set to celebrate 18th birthday with Grand Ole Opry debut

Grace Bowers won't be known as Nashville's "17-year-old guitar virtuoso" much longer.

Unlike many teenagers who have normal birthday parties, Bowers is set to celebrate her 18th birthday on July 30 with her first performance on the hallowed stages of the Grand Ole Opry. It will be a bucket-list moment for the Nashville teen.

Her friend and producer of her upcoming album, John Osborne of the Brothers Osborne , surprised her with the news.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"Actually the day I found out John told me that he needed a pedal of mine to borrow, and I'm like, 'That's weird, why do you need that?'" Bowers told The Tennessean. "But I brought it to him and I walk in and he's like, 'When's your 18th birthday?' I told him and he's like, 'Well would you like to play the Opry on your 18th birthday?'

Then her whole family popped out from their hiding spots to help her celebrate the news.

Backstory: Not your typical 17-year-old: Guitar virtuoso Grace Bowers rocks out to hair metal, blues

Festivals: Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion to celebrate Americana, country, rock at September fest

"I feel like ever since we moved to Nashville, one of the first shows we ever saw was at the Grand Ole Opry and since then, I've kind of always been like, 'man, I wish I could play there.' And yeah, now I am. So it's kind of like a dream come true."

Bowers set to open for Chris Shiflett, Brothers Osborne and Elle King

But an Opry debut is just part of the exciting year Bowers has ahead of her. She and her band, The Hodge Podge, will embark on their first summer tour with festival stops at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and Franklin's Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival among others, which include opening slots for Chris Shiflett, Brothers Osborne and Elle King along the way.

"This is first time (touring) under my own name," she said. "I used to go out on runs as other people's guitar player. I'm really excited about this summer because it's my band now and you know, we're playing all over the place at all these different festivals. It's going to be a busy summer, but I'm very excited about it."

Grace Bowers and The Hodge Podge new music coming

She and her band have worked with Osborne to record an album that will come out later this summer. The first single, "Tell Me Why U Do That" is out now with another coming June 6.

Bowers said working with Osborne on the album was "unbelievable."

"I can't imagine doing it with anyone else," she added. "And John just, like, completely got my vision and knew what sound I wanted to get from it. And, you know, he was so easy to work with, too. I think he nailed it."

Second benefit show planned for June 10 at Brooklyn Bowl

In addition to the Opry, the album and the tour, Bowers is also planning her second benefit show taking place at Brooklyn Bowl on Mon. June 10. In 2023, shortly after the Covenant shooting, Bowers felt compelled to do something. So she organized a show that sold out the venue and raised $20,000 for the school.

This year, she's assembled a solid group of musical friends to do it again. This time, monies raised will go to Voices for a Safer Tennessee and MusiCares .

"I feel like safer gun laws are so common sense," she said. "And a lot of people don't. And you know, I just wanted to do something to make a difference or raise awareness about it. So that's why I did it the first year."

For the 2024 show, Bowers said she personally reached out to every artist she wanted to participate.

The lineup so far consists of The Cadillac Three, Devon Gilfillian, Caroline Jones, Meg McCree, Jarod James Nichols, John Osborne, Lucie Silvas, Brittney Spencer and Butch Walker with more to come.

Walker, who is a singer, songwriter, guitar player and producer, said he loves doing things for good causes, but especially with people like Bowers.

"Grace is a force of a guitar player, a good human, and has something magnetic about her that just makes everyone pay attention," he said. "It’s not just the cool hair and great guitar skills. She’s wanting to make a difference at a very young age and that spark is infectious for everyone around her"

Bowers said The Hodge Podge will be the house band and will play music off the new album, then invite guests to come up and play a few songs at a time. But in the end? "I'm sure we'll get everyone on stage," she gushed. "We'll have a super jam."

Her goal this year is to raise more money than last year's event. All the proceeds will benefit the charities. She said none of the musicians are being paid. In addition to ticket sales, there will be a GoFundMe set up as well as QR codes the night of the show.
