Procedures for Admission

In selecting students for admission, Calvin looks for evidence of Christian commitment and for the capacity and desire to learn. Students who are interested in the Christian perspective and curriculum of Calvin and who show an interest in its aims are eligible for consideration. Although the prospect of academic success is of primary consideration, the aspirations of the applicant, and the ability of Calvin to be of service will also be considered in admission decisions. The university admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin.

U.S. and Canadian applicants should submit the following to the office of admissions and financial aid:

  • Application for admission: either the Calvin Application or the Common Application, including Calvin specific questions ( www.calvin.edu/apply );
  • High school transcript;
  • Transcript(s) from any college(s) previously attended.
  • Calvin does not require students applying for undergraduate admission to submit standardized test scores*.

*U.S. and Canadian students may choose to not include their SAT, ACT, and/or CLT test scores in their application file. International students should review the Test Optional page to determine their eligibility. Students who choose to apply as test optional will receive equal consideration for Calvin’s academic scholarships. Please note that some named scholarships and state or federal aid may require test scores. For more information, please visit Test Optional .

A non-refundable application fee of $35 is required but will be waived for applications received by November 1 (U.S. citizens) and January 1 (Canadian and other international citizens) or those with a waiver code.

All documents and supporting data required for admission become the property of Calvin and will not be returned to the applicant.

Of the students who submit an application, approximately 75% are accepted. Completed applications are considered on a rolling basis (see deadlines below). Applicants will be notified of an admission decision soon after their files are complete.

Application Deadlines

Completed applications are considered on a rolling basis until the deadlines below. For maximum scholarship consideration, students must be admitted to Calvin and complete all scholarship application requirements by January 31.

* Ability of international students to enroll is dependent upon acquiring an F-1 visa. More flexibility may be allowed for international students within the United States holding a F-1 visa.

Admission Standards

Applicants must be high school graduates or have graduated from an equivalent program. Qualified applicants under the age of 17 will be considered for admission on an individual basis. Applicants who are at least nineteen years of age but have not completed high school or its equivalent may be granted admission provided they have successfully completed the General Educational Development test (GED) and submit satisfactory scores on one of the entrance examinations.

Application Process

Calvin University seeks students who will thrive in the academic, spiritual, and community life at Calvin. Each completed application is given careful consideration to assess the student’s academic profile based on several important markers of student success:

• academic performance • strength and quality of curriculum • ACT, SAT, and/or CLT (Classic Learning Test) results • demonstrated leadership and service • college transcripts, if applicable

Admissions counselors are available to help throughout the entire application process.

Applicants with low academic profiles will be reviewed individually by the committee on admissions. Decisions made by the committee are final. Any appeal of this decision must be made formally in writing through the admissions counselor.

Calvin reserves the right to revoke an applicant’s admittance to the University in certain situations, including but not limited to the following: 1) student involvement in a serious disciplinary situation prior to enrollment, 2) falsification or misrepresentation of information provided to the University during the application process, or 3) if the University learns that an enrolled student has engaged in serious misconduct prior to the first day of classes.

Profile of Calvin First-Year Students

Calvin welcomes students who desire an education of the heart and mind. Calvin students come from a variety of backgrounds and locations, and bring amazing gifts, perspectives and intellect to this community.

The middle 50% of the first-year students who enrolled at Calvin in the fall of 2021 had the following academic profile:

  • High school GPA: 3.66-4.07
  • ACT Composite Score: 24-30
  • SAT 1600: 1130-1330

The six-year graduation rate for entering first-year students is 77.1%; most students finish a degree in four years carrying a normal course load.

The first- to second-year retention rate is 86.02%.

Recommended High School Courses for Admission

Entrance examination information.

Most prospective first-year students are encouraged to provide the results of one of the following college entrance exams: the ACT (Code #1968), SAT (Code #1095), or CLT (Classic Learning Test).

Students are advised to take their college entrance examination during the spring semester of their junior year or in the fall of their senior year. Please note the following:

  • The SAT is required by the State of Michigan and is taken during the junior year of high school.
  • Calvin does not require the writing section of the SAT or ACT.
  • Canadian students with cumulative marks above 75% are not required to submit ACT or SAT results.

The ACT, SAT, and CLT tests are administered several times throughout the year. Information is available from high school counselors or online at www.act.org , www.collegeboard.org , or www.cltexam.com .

Dual Enrollment: On-campus and Online Programs

Dually enrolled students are individuals who are still attending high school but are concurrently enrolled in college courses. The dual enrollment program is administered by participating high schools and interested students should first inquire at their high school. Students are eligible for dual enrollment until the time of their high school graduation.

Calvin welcomes qualified high school students who wish to be dually enrolled. Students must complete the Calvin Guest Application, submit a signed letter of recommendation and an official copy of their high school transcript. A copy of the application and format for the letter of recommendation is available at www.calvin.edu/go/dualenroll . No essays, application fees or college entrance exams are required for dual enrollment. Students who wish to enroll as first-year students for the following academic year must subsequently follow normal first-year admissions procedures. Students will be notified of their dual enrollment admission and course registration by mail or email. The cost of dual enrollment is the responsibility of the family, in partnership with their high school. Please refer to the www.calvin.edu/go/dualenroll for more detailed information about costs, frequently asked questions and contact information.

Early Admission to Specific Academic Programs

Certain academic programs— Nursing   ,  Speech Pathology and Audiology    (MA), and Honors Scholars Program   —offer early admission status to incoming first-year students based on specific academic criteria. In most cases, early admission is determined by information provided in the student’s admission file. Please refer to the department website for further details and policies.

Admission of Transfer Students

Students who have earned 1 or more college credit after high school graduation are considered transfer students. Students transferring from other colleges or universities follow the same application procedures as first-year students. Transcripts from all previous colleges attended must be received prior to consideration for admission.

U.S. and Canadian students transferring from other colleges or universities should submit the following to the office of admissions and financial aid:

  • Transcript(s) from all college(s) previously attended.

A non-refundable application fee of $35 is required but will be waived for applications received by November 1 (U.S. citizens) and December 1 (Canadian and other international citizens).

Of the students who submit an application, approximately 75% are accepted. Completed applications are considered on a rolling basis (see deadlines table). Applicants will be notified of an admission decision soon after their files are complete.

Applicants with cumulative grade point averages below 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) will be reviewed individually by the committee on admissions. Applicants who have not yet completed a full semester of college level work will be also be reviewed by the committee on admissions.

Evaluation of Transfer Credit

Transfer credit will normally be awarded for work done in accredited institutions. The courses must be academic and similar in nature to courses offered at Calvin. A minimum grade of C is required in each course to receive credit. No more than seventy semester hours of credit will be allowed for work completed at an accredited community college; students may transfer community college credit any time during their academic career.

The transfer evaluation process begins with the transfer advisor at the office of the registrar, and may involve academic department chairs, as needed. A list of commonly accepted transfer courses from selected colleges is available online. Courses taken in residence at other accredited institutions are normally accepted, provided they have been approved by the transfer advisor in advance.

Veterans will receive credit, as recommended by the American Council on Education, for liberal arts courses taken through the USAFI and for a maximum of nine semester hours taken by correspondence courses from accredited universities in the program.

For minimum graduation requirements, see the formal bachelor’s degree requirements listed in the academic policies section of the catalog.

Admission of International Students

Calvin welcomes international students who demonstrate their ability to meet the academic standards of the university, who are prepared to do college-level work in English, who will contribute to a Christian learning environment and who show evidence of their ability to pay most of the cost of their education. Students should be certain that Calvin offers the programs they need. The university is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant international students.

To apply for admission, international students are required to submit the following by April 1:

  • Transcripts from high school and/or college(s) attended and the results of any tests required in the student’s country;
  • Applicable tests and/or demonstration of English language proficiency-see below;
  • Completed financial forms and supporting documents.

A non-refundable application fee of $35 is required but will be waived for applications received before December 1.

Calvin requires the SAT or ACT for international applicants who are in any one of the following situations: (Calvin does not require the writing sections of the SAT or ACT.)

  • Applicants who will have graduated from a high school in the United States
  • Applicants who will have graduated from an international school that follows a U.S. high school curriculum
  • Applicants who will have graduated from any school where English is the primary language of instruction
  • Applicants who will be transferring from a U.S. college or university where she/he has earned less than one year of credit
  • Applicants who are attending a Canadian high school and who have average marks below 75%

In certain situations, a student with a lower score on either test may be admitted with a provision for further intensive language training (such as ELS) at another institution.

International applicants who are not required to submit an SAT or ACT (according to the listing above) must submit the TOEFL, IELTS (International English Language Testing System), Pearson PTE or an ELS Level 112 certificate as documentation of English language proficiency.

Additional information about mathematics proficiency may also be requested.

Several scholarships are available to international students; some scholarships are awarded based on the results of the ACT or SAT. International students who wish to be considered for Calvin’s academic scholarships are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT even though these tests may not be required for admission purposes.

Before enrolling in classes, international students will participate in a self-placement process to select an appropriate English composition course. Normally, students meet with a member of the English department or the Center for Student Success who will lead them through a collaborative self-placement process, review their materials, and then recommend or require an English composition course or courses. International students who are proficient in a language other than English can use that language to satisfy the foreign language requirement.

Immigration Procedures for International and Canadian Students

International and Canadian students are required to have a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20) to attend college or university in the United States. An application for the I-20 will be sent to international and Canadian students at the time of their admission to Calvin. Immigration documents will be processed upon receipt of the completed I-20 application, clearance of financials, and placing the deposit. In addition, an I-901 Fee Remittance is required of all international students with an initial Certificate of Eligibility I-20. Admitted students will receive further information along with the I-20 application.

Enrollment Deposits for Incoming Students

An enrollment deposit is required of all first-year, transfer, international and readmitted students. This deposit serves as a confirmation of the student’s plans to enroll at Calvin. The deposit is first applied toward the student’s orientation fee and the remainder is applied to the student’s account. Enrollment deposits are not refundable after the due date. If space is available, enrollment deposits will be accepted after the due date.

* Enrollment deposits are not refundable after the due date. Enrollment deposits will be accepted after the due date as long as space is available.

See what students say:

Professors have “a desire to share their wealth of experiences and passions with the students” and are “extremely talented, interesting, and connected in their specific fields.” Instructors are also “masters at integration of education and Christianity,” making the classes at Calvin less about teaching the requisites for getting a job and “more about how to continue to learn about the field and how Christianity should figure into it.” Within courses, there is great opportunity to delve into complicated and often controversial topics “in a way that doesn’t ignore culture, science, or social scientific data.” Sharing ideas is encouraged between students. “I feel I can appropriately express my opinions and views without the condemnation of others,” says one. No matter your passion or career choice, “you will be paired with advisors [who have] similar passions,” which “allows freedom to express thoughts and talk openly with willing professors.

Student Body

Calvin's 3,100-strong body of undergrads includes a wide range of students and interests, including a significant number of international students, athletes, those with Dutch heritage, and "valedictorians everywhere." A large percentage of the students "are Christians and come from somewhere in the Midwest," and all are generally "friendly, helpful, outgoing, and hardworking." One student notes, "Some people feel that Calvin University is very diverse and others feel that it is not diverse at all, depending on where they came from." Diversity activities are highly emphasized and encouraged around campus, and the student body is "small enough that Calvin begins to feel like home, but large enough that you don't know everyone." As one student puts it best, "There is a niche for everyone in the social life of the school."

Campus Life

"Dorm life is vibrant" and "a big focus" at Calvin. Within the dorms "there is plenty of opportunity for leadership, and everyone is encouraged to grow together." Floor events in the residential halls are huge bonding occasions. The Student Life Division does a good job of organizing events that many students attend, including movies, board game nights, and concerts, and there are also "lots of clubs on campus that you can get involved in." When people aren't studying (studying in the hammocks around campus is popular) or in class, they often go to coffee shops or to get food together. Most work part-time, and there are "many different opportunities for on-campus jobs." Extracurriculars are big, and students "go backpacking, swing dancing...or hiking." There are also lots of things to do in the Grand Rapids area, and "people go out to meals, movies, bowling, sporting events, the downtown market, and other events in the city such as ArtPrize," or will go to Lake Michigan. Chapel is held daily but is not required, and there are a lot of "study groups and Bible studies to help each other grow toward academic and spiritual goals."

A look back at previous Dutch royal visits to Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Over the past 63 years, Jacob Nyenhuis has witnessed three visits by the Dutch Royal Family.

On Tuesday, he will have a good seat for his fourth when King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima spend a day in Grand Rapids.

The director of Hope College's Van Raalte Institute, dedicated to Dutch-American history, has been invited to a private luncheon at Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park where the king will make a short speech.

His first royal sighting was in 1952 as a senior at Grand Rapids Christian High, when the campus was at Franklin Street SE and Madison Avenue. Classes were canceled so students could line Franklin to see Queen Juliana's motorcade pass on the way to Calvin College.

The Dutch queen -- who ruled for 32 years until 1980 -- came with her husband, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld.

"The motorcade moved very slowly as it passed by so I got a pretty good look at the Royal couple," said Nyenhuis, who at that time had very little knowledge about the Netherlands and the royal family despite his Dutch heritage.

Decades later, Nyenhuis helped plan the visits of Queen Juliana's daughters, Queen Beatrix in 1982 and Princess Margariet in 1997.

Preparations for the visits were elaborate and extensive. Nyenhuis remembers committees meeting for nearly two years preparing for Queen Beatrix's two-and-half day visit in 1982.

An itinerary of that June 25-27 visit confirms the military precision of the trip -- down to which elevator the royal couple took when they arrived at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, where they stayed in the royal suite on the 12th floor.

Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were feted by Grand Rapids royalty: Amway co-founder and Dutch-American Jay Van Andel who held a gala in their honor, and former President Gerald R. Ford who gave them a personal tour of his museum.

The royal entourage included the Grand-Master, the highest-ranking official on the royal staff, and the Netherlands Secretary of Foreign Affairs and a Lady-in-Waiting.

Van Andel had a guiding hand in the planning as the chairman of the National Commission on the Bicentennial of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The group's honorary chairman was former President George H.W. Bush, vice-president at the time.

Nyenhuis served on the two smaller planning groups, the West Michigan Commission and a Holland Mayor's Commission.

The late Willard C. Wichers, founder of the Holland Museum, who was the honorary consul of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in West Michigan, was the driving force behind all the arrangements for West Michigan.

The trip included a tree-planting ceremony at Calvin College of a maple with leaves that turn orange in the fall, the same variety that will be planted in Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park on Tuesday in King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima's honor.

In Holland, the royal couple rode through the crowd-lined streets in an open carriage led by two Friesian horses. After a ceremony at Hope College, they were treated to a picnic at Kollen Park, overlooking Lake Macatawa, where locals could offer well-wishes to the royals.

In 1997, Princess Margriet and her husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven, came to Holland for the city's sesquicentennial celebration. She spoke at a ceremony in Centennial Park for the unveiling of the "Immigrants" sculpture by Dutch sculptor Bert Kiewit in Kollen Park and the unveiling of a plaque in front of the sculpture of the city's founder, Albertus C. Van Raalte, in Centennial Park on Oct. 1, 1997.

Queen Juliana's 1952 trip to Michigan came during her first official visit to the U.S. as the reigning Dutch monarch. She had previously visited Holland in 1941 during World War II when she was Princess Juliana.

"It was partly to thank U.S. for assistance during World War II," said Herman DeVries, of the 1952 visit.

DeVries, who teaches Dutch among other languages at Calvin College, noted that this visit has a similar message and comes on the 70th anniversary of the Dutch liberation from Nazi occupation.

Her visit included a stop in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan where she was awarded an honorary degree. Residents lined the streets shouting, "Long Live the Queen," according to a story in the university's newspaper .

She flew out of the university's airport to California to finish the remainder of her 3-week tour in the U.S., according to the story.

Calvin College honored the queen by naming an academic chair after her in its Dutch language program -- which will celebrate its centennial in the upcoming academic year. The college is one of 10 across the U.S. that has a dedicated Dutch language program.

"We are very interested in maintaining connection with the Netherlands today and the door to a culture is the language," DeVries said.

Report: Wisconsin OL Tanor Bortolini Takes Top-30 Visit With Jaguars

The Wisconsin offensive lineman started at every position but left tackle during his college career.

  • Author: John Shipley

The Jacksonville Jaguars are doing their homework on one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the NFL Draft.

According to Ryan Roberts , Wisconsin offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini has undergone top-30 visits with the Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, and the Green Bay Packers. Bortolini drew rave reviews for his combine performance after setting a record for interior offensive linemen with a 7.16 three-cone time.

Bortolini offers some of the best versatility in the class, starting games at left guard, center, right guard, and right tackle during his four-year college career.

Bortolini appeared in two games and started one at center in 2020 before becoming a full-time player in 2021. In his second season, Bortolini appeared in 10 games and started five (including three starts at right tackle).

In 2022, Bortolini was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten after seven starts at left guard and three games at right guard. He was again named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in 2023 after making 12 starts at center.

The Jaguars were active along the offensive line this offseason, signing veteran center Mitch Morse, re-signing starting left guard Ezra Cleveland, and restructuring the contract of right guard Brandon Scherff to ensure he remained on the roster.

“I feel good. The biggest thing for us is that we do have to get better in the run game.  That’s a given, even as well as TJ [RB Travis Etienne Jr.], he was a 1,000-yard rusher last year.  We still have to get better.  There’s still more on the table," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said about the team's offensive line at the league meetings in Orlando. "That helps your quarterback.  You’ve got to be able to run the ball in this league as well. It sets up a lot of different things for you. So that’s something as a staff we’ve been focused on this offseason. "
