CANADA TOURS FOR SENIORS

Being a senior does not limit the experiences that can be had in Canada, it simply allows travellers to appreciate the surroundings with more perspective! Watching the glaciers and lakes come into view from the comforts of a moving train such as the Rocky Mountaineer is the ideal way to see the Rockies - the glass of wine in hand or the fine dining options are flourishes that add to the storytelling after the journey. Once nestled into the historic hotels of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, the stories of Canadian exploration really come alive. Rail journeys can continue across the country with the comforts of a private cabin onboard 'the Canadian' train with VIA Rail. As the train chugs over mountains, across the Prairies and through the Lake country to it's final stop in Toronto, there is time to read up on the culinary hotspots of the city. Tasting tours through Kensington Market will leave visitors with a full belly and a better understanding of 'What is Canadian food...eh?' Another travelling experience in Canada ideal for those wanting to control the touring, learning and independent time, is an Arctic cruise. Being a part of history as the ship passes iceburgs, anchors along shorelines that have no human settlements and allow passengers to sit in the tundra and watch the world go by or stroll along a beachfront with geological experts - is more than a trip of a lifetime, it a deserved trip for those with perspective.

The Maritimes: Nova Scotia

My husband and I did the tour of the Martimes in Nova Scotia. It was beautiful country. Our tour guide, Louise, was fantastic. She is so kind and caring; she is an amazing safe driver. She's always there for you. The only thing I didn't like about the trip was the motel in Baddeck. It was so old; musty smelling. Needs a total renovation. Everything about it was pretty awful. No-one on the trip was happy with this hotel. Other than that, we did enjoy the rest of the trip. the other hotels were fine. The Picnic Louise arranged was a lot of fun and the hike was awesome on the Cabot trail.

Before you go, while you are away, retiring abroad.

  • Returning to Canada

As an older traveller, you could face certain barriers and risks when you travel outside Canada. Research and prepare for your trip in advance to help your travels go smoothly.

Travel advice

Visit the Travel Advice and Advisories  page for your destination for information on:

  • local safety and security conditions and areas to avoid
  • entry and exit requirements
  • local laws and culture
  • possible health hazards and health restrictions
  • natural hazards and climate
  • where to find help while you are travelling outside Canada

List of destination-specific Travel Advice and Advisories

Travel documents

Be sure your passport is valid before you leave Canada.

  • Ensure that you and all accompanying family members have a Canadian passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended return to Canada. This is a requirement of entry for many countries.
  • If you need to renew your passport or apply for a new one, start the process well before your planned departure from Canada. Allow more time if you need a visa since you will need to obtain a passport first.

More information about applying for a Canadian passport

Visas and other requirements

While you may not need a visa for all destinations when travelling with your Canadian passport, most countries require a visa for longer stays (usually more than 90 days).

  • Consult the  Travel Advice and Advisories  for destination-specific visa information.
  • Contact the embassy or consulate of your destination country in Canada, as well as countries you are transiting through, to check the entry and exit requirements and other regulations. Ensure that you allow enough time to get the proper documentation.

Travel insurance

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes health, life and disability coverage. This will help you avoid large expenses, such as the cost of hospitalization and medical treatment outside Canada.

  • Be sure it covers pre-existing medical conditions, medical evacuation and repatriation in case of death.

Accessibility and accommodations

  • If you have mobility issues, find out what accessibility and accommodations are available at your destination.
  • Do not forget to pack a travel health kit .

More information about travelling with disabilities

Health information

Visit a health care provider or a travel health clinic to discuss your travel plans, preferably 6 weeks before you leave, to reduce your risk of illness or accidents while abroad. For more information, visit Receiving medical care outside Canada and Well on Your Way - A Canadian’s Guide to Healthy Travel Abroad .

Visit a health care professional to find out if any vaccines are required or recommended for your destination.   With increasing age, it may take your body longer to develop immunity. If possible, get vaccinated well in advance of your travels so that you have enough time to develop immunity. Be sure your routine vaccines and adult boosters recommended in Canada, such as the pneumococcal vaccine, are up to date.

The protection you received from vaccines when you were younger decreases over time. This could increase your risk of getting some diseases. Discuss your immunization history with your health care professional before you travel.

For more information, visit Travel vaccinations

COVID-19 vaccines

  • It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series in Canada before departing to reduce their risk of infection when travelling internationally.
  • For more information on COVID-19, visit Vaccines for COVID-19: How to get vaccinated and check the Health tab for your destination in the Travel advice and Advisories .

Yellow fever vaccine

Some countries require proof that travellers have received a yellow fever vaccination and have an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis before allowing them to enter the country.

  • The entry requirements of a country may not reflect your risk of developing yellow fever at your destination.
  • Those who are 60 years or older are more likely to experience serious side effects from the yellow fever vaccine.
  • If you are travelling to a country that requires proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter or to a destination where there is a risk of yellow fever , discuss the risks and benefits of vaccination with a health care provider at a designated yellow fever clinic .
  • You should call ahead to determine if the vaccine will be available at one of Canada’s Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres as there is an ongoing shortage of the only yellow fever vaccine authorized for sale in Canada: YF-VAX®.
  • If a health care professional determines you should not receive the vaccine for medical reasons, they will provide you with a medical waiver .

Influenza vaccine

  • Influenza (flu) season usually runs from November to April in the northern hemisphere, from April to October in the southern hemisphere and year-round in tropical regions.
  • If you did not receive the flu vaccine at the beginning of the season and are now planning to travel, consider getting the flu shot. It is important to get it well in advance so that you develop immunity before your departure.

Travelling with medicines

In some countries, drugs that are legal and readily available in Canada may be considered illegal, require a prescription or may arouse suspicions among local officials and customs and immigration authorities.

  • Contact the foreign government office accredited to Canada of the country you plan to visit, as well as any transit points, to make sure the medications or medical supplies you intend to bring are allowed into the country.

Health considerations

If you become ill and require medical assistance while outside of Canada, consult Sickness or injury .

Malaria

If you are travelling to areas where malaria is present , you should discuss your risk with a health care professional to determine if antimalarial medication is required.

  • Older travellers may be at an increased risk of severe, complicated or fatal malaria .
  • Some antimalarial medications may interact with medications you may already be taking. Make sure to bring a complete list of all your medications so a health care professional can assess potential drug interactions.
  • Whether or not you take antimalarial medication, protect yourself from mosquito bites .
  • If you develop a fever while travelling or after returning home, seek medical attention immediately. Tell a health care professional that you have recently travelled to an area where malaria is present.

Travellers’ diarrhea

Complications from travellers’ diarrhea are a particular concern in older travellers with underlying medical conditions. Ask a health care professional if there are any extra precautions you should take.

  • To prevent travellers’ diarrhea , practice safe food and water precautions and wash your hands frequently .
  • If you get travellers’ diarrhea, drink enough oral rehydration solution or other fluids to maintain a flow of pale-coloured urine.
  • Seek medical attention if the diarrhea is bloody and accompanied by a high fever, jaundice (yellow skin) or persistent vomiting, or if the dehydration does not improve despite the use of oral rehydration solutions.

Transportation considerations

Air travel may cause blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). You may be at greater risk of developing blood clots if you have cancer or congestive heart failure or had recent surgery.

  • Older travellers have a higher risk of developing DVT.
  • The risk of DVT can be reduced by getting up and walking around occasionally, exercising and stretching your legs while seated and selecting an aisle seat when possible.
  • A health care professional may recommend additional ways to reduce your risk, such as wearing compression stockings and/or taking preventative medication.

You can get jet lag after crossing multiple time zones. Symptoms of jet lag can include difficulty falling asleep at night, waking up earlier than usual and feeling irritable and tired.

  • Older travellers may feel the effects of jet lag more than younger ones.
  • getting more exposure to sunlight
  • eating at your usual mealtime in the new time zone
  • exercising
  • drinking lots of water and staying well hydrated (it is important to limit or avoid alcohol and caffeine)
  • driving on the left-hand side of the road
  • unfamiliar routes
  • poor road surfaces
  • operating an unfamiliar vehicle
  • Consider safer transportation options other than driving.
  • Remember to wear a seat belt even if it is not legally required in your host country.

Climate considerations

  • Older travellers are generally at less risk of altitude sickness than younger travellers.
  • Being in good physical shape and ascending to high altitudes slowly can help your body adapt.
  • If you have heart or lung disease or diabetes, a health care professional may discuss other ways to help reduce the effects of altitude sickness.
  • Protect yourself from the heat .
  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stroke (confusion, dizziness, headache, nausea). Seek medical attention if you think you are developing heat stroke.
  • Take some time to get used to the heat before engaging in any vigorous physical activity.
  • Protect yourself from the cold .
  • Be aware of the early signs and symptoms of hypothermia (shivering, feeling tired, confusion, slow and shallow breathing) and frostbite (numbness or tingling, stinging or pain, and pale or waxy skin). Seek medical attention if you think you are developing hypothermia or frostbite.

If you need help

If you need assistance while you are outside Canada, contact the Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate in your host country or GAC at the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa.

  • Carry an  Emergency contact card  with the coordinates of the nearest Government of Canada office in your host country, in case you have problems while abroad.
  • Stay in touch with your family and friends in Canada to let them know that all is well with you.
  • Have contact information to request emergency consular assistance .

If you plan to retire outside Canada, check with the foreign government office accredited to Canada of the country where you plan to live to find out what regulations are in place, what the tax implications might be and what documents you may require.

More information about retiring abroad

Returning to Canada

Entry requirements can change suddenly. Even if you are a Canadian citizen, check the updated travel requirements before your departure to return to Canada.

  • Insect bite prevention
  • Receiving medical care outside Canada
  • Death outside Canada
  • Travelling with disabilities
  • People who are at risk of more severe disease or outcomes from COVID-19 (Public Health Agency of Canada)
  • Canada Pension Plan (Service Canada)
  • Old Age Security pension (Service Canada)

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

  • Travel insurance can cover injuries or illnesses while you’re traveling in Canada, as your domestic health insurance may not travel with you across the border.
  • The best travel insurance for Canada will also cover costs associated with trip cancellation, delay and interruption.
  • If you plan to travel with high-value items like a laptop, smartphone or camera, ensure the travel insurance you buy has enough per-item coverage for lost, damaged or stolen belongings.

Many U.S. travelers flock to our northern neighbor to take in Canada’s cultural experiences and stunning remote landscapes. While travel insurance isn’t a requirement to enter Canada, it may be worth purchasing for the benefits, like medical insurance, trip cancellation and baggage coverage.

“Even if Canada doesn’t feel too far from the U.S., being out of the country can be stressful, and any unexpected costs that get in your way, from lost baggage to getting sick or injured, can make any mishaps even more upsetting,” said Daniel Durazo, spokesperson for Allianz Global Assistance. “With the right travel insurance policy, you can ease your mind from unexpected travel scenarios or outrageous out-of-pocket bills.”

Here’s what you should consider when buying travel insurance for Canada.

Understanding travel insurance for Canada

Understanding Canada travel insurance can make choosing a policy easier. Compare plans to see which policies meet your travel needs. For example, some plans have exclusions for adventure activities, such as rock climbing without equipment, but may offer an adventure sports bundle as an upgrade.

There are also various limitations on medical coverages, trip delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation benefits that could make one policy better than another for your Canada trip.

It’s best to buy travel insurance soon after making your first trip deposit. This way you’re covered for a longer period, at no additional cost.

“Travel insurance policies typically only cover unknown and unforeseen situations, from unexpected injuries or illness to flight cancellations and weather-related events,” said Durazo. “If you wait until you have a problem, you likely won’t be covered.”

Buying travel insurance coverage within 14 days of your first trip deposit ensures you get the most benefits. Depending on the plan, buying early could also make you eligible for a pre-existing condition waiver. This means the insurance provider won’t look back at your medical records if you file a claim for a medical condition you already had before buying the policy.

But if you have a trip coming up soon, don’t worry — you can buy a travel insurance policy up to 24 hours before your departure date.

Key coverage considerations for travel insurance in Canada

The best travel insurance plans bundle together several types of insurance, from trip cancellation insurance to travel medical insurance. No matter what your plans are once you enter Canada, consider these key coverages when researching travel insurance to Canada.

Trip cancellation insurance

Sometimes, things happen that require you to cancel your trip. Maybe a family member was going to watch your kids while you’re gone, and they’re now too sick to take care of them. Or severe weather impacts the airline, grounding your flight for the days you planned to be in Canada.

Trip cancellation insurance will reimburse up to 100% of prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, like a flightseeing tour in the Yukon or a Johnston Canyon tour in Banff, if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Other reasons you might have to cancel include family emergency, job loss, severe injury or sickness, terrorism or military deployment.

However, you can’t cancel for any reason — like a falling out with your travel companion — and get reimbursed, unless you upgrade your travel insurance plan to “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage. Although CFAR can add around 50% to your travel insurance costs, the ability to cancel for any reason and receive up to 75% of your nonrefundable expenses can make the extra expense worth it. Just make sure you cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date and time to get this benefit.

Delays in your Canada trip

If you’re headed to Canada during winter, severe weather could shut down the airport or cause flight delays. If you’re flying from Baltimore to Whistler with a connection in Chicago, but a winter storm causes delays in Baltimore, you might miss your connecting flight to Vancouver.

Most travel insurance plans will reimburse for meals and hotel accommodation expenses you incur from a travel delay. But to be eligible, the delay usually has to be at least six hours, with some policies requiring 12 consecutive hours before trip delay coverage kicks in. Seven Corners, for instance, will reimburse up to $250 per day per person to a maximum of $2,000 for a delay of at least six hours.

Trip insurance with delay benefits will also reimburse for prepaid expenses you miss out on because of a covered delay. So, if you miss out on your first two days at the ski lodge and can’t transfer or exchange prepaid snowboarding lessons, you can file a claim.

Tackling trip interruption

The last thing you’d expect while taking in the Halifax, Nova Scotia sites is to have a family emergency back home. If you get a call that your mom fell down the stairs and is in the hospital with a broken leg, you’ll probably be ready to catch the next flight home to be with her.

Luckily, travel insurance includes trip interruption benefits, which can help you get there without a large out-of-pocket expense. Trip interruption coverage will pay for your one-way ticket back home and cover any prepaid accommodations and tours you’ll miss from having to shorten your trip.

Dealing with lost bags and belongings

Travel insurance will also cover baggage loss and personal items that get damaged, stolen or lost while you’re traveling. So if you check your hiking poles and boots and they get damaged or lost during the flight, your travel insurance will reimburse you for the depreciated cost of those items.

You’ll also have coverage if someone steals your backpack while you’re sightseeing in Toronto. If you’re traveling with high-value items, make sure you have enough coverage. Many travel insurance plans have a $500 to $1,000 cap on certain items like cameras, watches and computers. Some policies also exclude coverage for smartphones.

Making plans for medical bills in Canada

Don’t be surprised if your health insurance provides little to no coverage in Canada or requires you to pay a large out-of-pocket deductible, said Carol Mueller, spokesperson for Berkshire Hathaway. Canada doesn’t accept Medicare from the U.S., and your health insurance won’t cover you unless you have global coverage. The Government of Canada will also not cover hospital and medical expenses for visitors, including American tourists.

Whether you’re planning to hit the slopes, go hiking or just take advantage of what the swanky resort you splurged on has to offer, you never know when you might fall ill or get hurt. This is where travel medical insurance can help.

Allianz’s OneTrip Prime single-trip plan will pay up to $50,000 for your medical expenses, such as X-rays, prescriptions, doctor’s visits or a hospital stay. Other plans, such as as some in our rating of the best travel insurance for seniors cover up to $500,000.

Even if you’re up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccines, you might still want to consider a travel insurance plan that covers COVID-related medical treatment, like those in our rating of the best COVID-19 travel insurance .

Travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is critical if you plan to travel to remote areas of Canada. The nearest trauma facility equipped to treat your medical emergency might be hundreds of miles away, requiring a medevac to get you there.

If you don’t have medical plan coverage, you could be on the hook for thousands of dollars in medical costs and private medical transportation. Travel insurance provides emergency medical evacuation coverage .

The Allianz OneTrip Prime and Berkshire Hathaway’s ExactCare travel plans will cover up to $500,000 for emergency medical transportation and repatriation of remains. Travel Guard and Seven Corners plans will each provide up to $1 million.

What is the cost of Canada travel insurance?

There are several factors insurers use to determine the cost of a travel insurance policy , including age, trip cost, destination and length of the trip. In general, you can expect travel insurance to cost about 5% to 6% of your total trip cost.

When calculating the trip expenses to insure, only include those that are nonrefundable. If your prepaid, nonrefundable flights, accommodations and tours total $5,000, you can expect to pay around $275 for travel insurance. You may pay more if you choose a plan with higher coverage limits and upgrades.

Companies use different criteria and weigh factors differently than other providers, so comparing travel insurance policy quotes can help you find the most comprehensive plan for the best price. You can use travel insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth to compare coverage limits and add-on coverage such as rental car, “cancel for any reason” and adventure sports.

Key benefits of having travel insurance for your Canada trip

Even though you’re not flying across an ocean, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a travel insurance plan. Some of the key benefits of having travel insurance for your Canada trip include:

  • Not stressing or worrying about not having government health insurance plan coverage since you’re not a Canadian resident.
  • Not losing out on your nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs if something unforeseen occurs and you have to cancel your trip or head home early.
  • Knowing that if your trip is delayed or canceled, or you lose a bag or get something stolen, you have coverage to recoup at least some of your out-of-pocket costs.

The right travel plan can provide peace of mind, and many policies will pay for themselves if you need to make a claim for a covered reason.

Tips for choosing the best travel insurance provider for your Canada trip

Comparing travel insurance companies can help you make the right choice when choosing a travel insurance product. Check customer reviews and complaints on websites like Trustpilot. Travel insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip can also help you identify the best travel insurance company and most generous policy.

Don’t be afraid to call an insurance company to ask them “what if?” questions to ensure you’re getting the right policy. “You should feel confident in the coverage you purchase and trust you will receive the level of claims service you deserve if you need to file a claim,” said Mueller.

You should always read the fine print to know your policy’s limitations and exclusions. This includes restrictions on trip delay, cancellation and interruption benefits, and understanding what you’ll need to file a claim for baggage damage, loss, or medical care.

Tip: Most travel insurance companies offer a 10 to 15 free look period, which allows you to review the policy and cancel it for a full refund if you decide it’s not the best choice.

Other insurance considerations for Canada

If you’re planning to participate in adventure activities, like dogsledding in the Yukon, kayaking the Johnstone Strait to see orcas or surfing and hiking in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, you want to make sure you’re covered.

World Nomads Explorer travel insurance plan covers more than 200 adventure activities. You can also get extreme sports coverage, license fees and equipment delay coverage with Berkshire Hathaway’s AdrenalineCare travel plan. Travel Guard offers an Adventure Sports Bundle optional upgrade, which waives benefit exclusions for adventure and extreme activities.

We mentioned CFAR coverage above, but some policies also offer optional “interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage. It works like CFAR, allowing you to end your trip early for any reason, not just those listed in your policy. Seven Corners offers a CFAR and IFAR upgrade for up to 75% of nonrefundable trip costs as long as you purchase it within 20 days of your first trip payment.

Road trips are also a popular way to see Canada’s beauty. If you plan to rent a car, it may be worth getting rental vehicle coverage if your credit card doesn’t offer it. World Nomads will cover up to $35,000 in collision damage waiver, while Travel Guard’s rental vehicle damage coverage will pay up to $50,000 in damage to your rental vehicle. Note that this coverage does not include liability insurance , if you are at fault for an accident that results in injuries or damage to others’ property. Check with your car insurance company to make sure your U.S. auto insurance coverage extends to driving in Canada.

Best Travel Insurance for Canadian Seniors

Seniors

Canadian seniors that travel are often considered to be snowbirds . It is because they like to enjoy the warmer environments like many of the States have to offer. Furthermore, they will do this through the Canadian winter months. Of course, they want to be sure they have the proper travel insurance. Aside from the snowbirds, many other seniors love to travel. They like to take trips as well. In addition, they too need good travel insurance.

What Do Seniors Need to Look For In Their Travel Insurance?

Seniors appear to have some extra needs for travel protection. Also, it relates to their age with them being over the age of sixty-five

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage when away from home is vital for everyone. Plus, seniors, may be more vulnerable to illness or injury. Not to mention they need to know that their medical costs are taken care of if a health issue arises. The insurance coverage should include the cost of transportation to return home if necessary.  It may mean that an earlier flight is needed.

Evacuation for Medical Purposes

It is not unusual for a senior to take ill and not be well enough to travel back home in a conventional manner. They may need medical evacuation. It may mean transporting to another region for more specialized care. Seniors should check their travel insurance to make sure this is part of their coverage.

Lost or Stolen Personal Items

It is most distressing for seniors to have their luggage or personal belongings stolen. Most often the baggage contains some of their valuable items or even their medication. Personal belongings insurance helps to reduce the stress of this mishap.

Trip Cancellation

There are many times when there is a trip cancellation.  Not at the fault of the traveler.  Many insurance companies offer insurance that will cover these costs. It is worth having even if one has never experienced this problem in the past.

Emergency Help

Many seniors love to travel to new places and other countries. As a result, there are in unfamiliar territory. There are times that they may need some emergency help. For example, there may be a language barrier. The senior travelers may need some information but are not able to understand it. The emergency help has a number that the seniors can call. Any good-quality travel insurance provider will include this in their coverage.

Dealing with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Pre-existing medical conditions are a big hurdle for traveling seniors. It is one part of travel insurance that can get confusing.

The age for seniors is sixty-five. Health questionnaires are given to those at age fifty-five in some cases. It is something that a lot of Insurance companies do.

These questionnaires may seem intrusive, and some are more complex than others. It is essential to fill in all details.  Omitting any of the required health information can result in the insurance being void.

What Do Seniors Have to Be Cautious About with Travel Insurance?

Travel Insurance can be expensive, and more so for seniors. Based on this many will try and cut corners. Some seniors will shop for that which comes with the lowest cost. They may not pay attention to what they are getting coverage for.

It could be they are not getting adequate coverage. They are wasting their money.

Seniors need to look for specific things when purchasing travel insurance.

  • The senior must read the policy and understand it. They should ask questions. If they don’t understand something.
  • There could be requirements to buy the coverage a certain number of days before the travel date. It could be ten days or even fourteen days.
  • There should be a period that allows for the insurance cancellation. It should allow for a refund.
  • Seniors need to look at the policy for any exceptions. In most cases, there will be a list of exceptions. These are what the travel insurance will not cover.  Waiver of these is possible sometimes. If the insured wants to pay extra.
  • Exclusions are different from exceptions.  Exclusions deal with a specific circumstance.  For example, if an individual experienced an accident that was as a result of something they did. The exclusion may stipulate that the insurance would not cover this.

What Is the Best Travel Insurance For Seniors?

Travel insurance can be expensive. There are companies that have different travel plans and packages available with different rates. It allows seniors to have options. They get choices based on affordability.

Away from Home Help

Being away from home is exciting but can also be overwhelming. Some seniors feel apprehensive about being in a strange place. A good travel insurance company will ensure their clients have a contact.  It can help a traveler that runs into any difficulties while away.

How To Find a Good Travel Company for Seniors

For the snowbirds, they have an organization called the Canadian Snowbirds Association. It is a group that provides snowbirds with a lot of great information. They have also arranged to partner up with a travel Insurance company. It is one that will cater to the senior traveler’s needs.

Multi-trip travel insurance for seniors is a type of coverage designed to accommodate frequent travelers who embark on multiple trips within a specified period. Instead of purchasing individual policies for each trip, a multi-trip policy offers potential cost savings for seniors who travel frequently. Multi-trip insurance also provides flexibility for both spontaneous trips and planned getaways.

Are pre-existing medical conditions with senior travel insurance?

Travel insurance for Canadian seniors with pre-existing medical conditions can be a bit more challenging to obtain compared to other age groups for the same plans. Pre-existing medical conditions are health conditions that exist before the travel insurance is purchased or the trip is booked.

These conditions can range from chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or heart disease, to previous injuries or surgeries. Insurers consider pre-existing medical conditions as they affect the risk profile of the traveller, and providing coverage for such conditions adds complexity and potential costs to the insurance policy.

Here are some important points to consider when seeking coverage for older Canadians with pre-existing medical conditions:

  • Insurers will typically require seniors with pre-existing medical conditions to undergo a medical screening or fill out a medical questionnaire.
  • Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions may have certain limitations and exclusions. For example, some conditions may be covered up to a certain age or may not be covered at all.
  • Insurers may require that the pre-existing medical condition has been stable for a specified period before the trip. The stability period varies between insurance providers, but it is typically around 90 to 180 days.
  • Premiums may be higher for seniors with pre-existing conditions.
  • Seniors with pre-existing medical conditions are encouraged to purchase policies as early as possible.

Good to know

Some insurers offer exclusion waivers that allow seniors to purchase additional coverage for pre-existing conditions by paying an extra premium. This can provide more comprehensive coverage for the specific health condition.

Don't let a dream vacation turn into a nightmare. Here are some travel tips for older adults

Before setting out on a vacation, there are some tips that can help ensure a safe and healthy trip.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What tips can you offer retirees with health issues who are planning some trips? We’ve been looking forward to traveling again after staying home the past few years, but my husband has a heart condition and some back problems that worry me.

— Concerned Wife

More: Savvy Senior: If you're planning a trip with your grandkids, here are some tips

DEAR CONCERNED: A dream vacation can turn into a real nightmare if you get ill or injured while you’re away and aren’t prepared. Before setting out, here are some tips to help ensure a safe and healthy trip for you and your husband.

Get prepared: Before you go, talk with your doctor about your travel itinerary and what precautions you need to take before traveling. You should also have your doctor’s contact information with you when you travel, as well as a list of the medications you’re taking in case you need emergency medical care while you’re away.

It’s also a smart idea to locate health clinics or urgent care facilities near the areas you’re visiting. Your hotel can help you with this or a simple internet search can identify nearby health care services. If you’re traveling abroad, the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in the countries you’re visiting (go to step.state.gov to enroll your trip) is a good place to get a referral. Or use the International Society of Travel Medicine’s directory at ISTM.org.

If you’re traveling outside the U.S., you also need to find out the health conditions of the country you’re visiting and what, if any, vaccinations and/or preventative medications are recommended. See CDC.gov/travel or call 800-232-4636 to get this information.

Check your insurance: If you have private health insurance or a Medicare Advantage plan through an HMO or PPO that covers in-network doctors only, check your plan to find out what’s covered if you need medical care when traveling outside your geographic area.

Beneficiaries that have original Medicare are covered everywhere in the U.S. But if you’re traveling abroad, you won’t be covered outside the U.S. and its territories except in rare circumstances, although some Medicare Advantage plans and some Medigap supplemental policies do provide limited coverage. Most private health plans don’t pay health care costs outside the U.S. either. Be sure to check.

Many retirees traveling abroad purchase travel insurance with medical coverage, which may cover expenses if you cancel the trip, need to be treated while traveling or need to be evacuated for medical care. Make sure the policy will also cover your preexisting medical conditions. To shop and compare policies, go to TravelInsurance.com, InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth.com.

Organize your medications: Make sure you have a sufficient supply of medications to last the entire trip.

More from Savvy Senior: Here are some tips on helping keep older drivers safe on the roads

If traveling by air, you need to pack your medicine in your carry-on bag, so if your checked luggage gets lost or misdirected you won’t be without. It’s best to keep your medications in their original containers to get through airport security without delays. It’s also a good idea to bring along a note from your doctor that explains why you take these medications, especially if syringes or other medical supplies are involved.

For airport security requirements, go to TSA.gov — click on “Disabilities and Medical Conditions.” You can also call TSA Cares at 855-787-2227 before traveling with questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

Maximize technology: Keep a list of your medications and other important health and medical information handy on your smartphone so you can easily access and share it with emergency health care providers when you’re traveling. Some good apps that can help with this are Backpack Health (BackpackHealth.com) and Capzule (Capzule.com).

Travel Insurance FAQs

Have questions about travel insurance for seniors? Get the answers you need here.

Generally speaking, no. While your age can affect your eligibility for certain coverages, we have packages and plans that cover all age groups. If you are age 65 or older, we may ask you to answer a few questions about your health to make sure you have the most appropriate coverage.

Possibly. Depending on your age, medical condition and, if applicable, your answers to our health questions, pre-existing medical conditions are covered if they are stable for a certain time period (as specified in your policy) before your policy's effective date.

Note: Please refer to the policy document for complete coverage details regarding pre-existing conditions.

Your answers to the health questions (if applicable) will be used to help determine the benefits you are eligible to receive under your insurance policy.

When answering the health questions:

  • Take your time. The questions may take up to 10 minutes to complete.
  • You (the applicant) should complete and sign the Medical Questionnaire. (If you have someone else complete the Medical Questionnaire on your behalf, it is still your responsibility to make sure the answers to the questions are correct.)
  • Read and answer each question carefully and accurately. Review your answers to confirm they are correct. Incorrect answers may lead to your coverage being voided or your claim denied.
  • Have your prescriptions or a description of your medications nearby for reference.
  • If you are unsure about any questions regarding your medical condition or medications, please speak to your physician.

The right coverage for your trip depends on several factors, including (but not limited to) where you're travelling to, how long you’ll be gone, the kind of transportation you'll be using and, in some instances, your overall health. View all of our travel insurance products now.

Yes, if you are travelling outside your home province or territory. There are several reasons why it's important to get travel medical insurance when you're travelling within Canada. One reason is that accidents can happen anywhere. Another is that government health insurance plans do have limits on reimbursement of emergency medical expenses incurred while you are in another province. For example, the ambulance, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered by some government health insurance plans.

The cost of a trip can be a significant financial investment. A lot can also happen in the time between booking your trip and departing—if a medical emergency or other unexpected event prevents you from going on your trip, you could potentially lose some (or possibly all) of the money you paid.

With trip cancellation and interruption insurance, you're protected when certain situations prevent you from travelling as planned. Examples include:

  • You can't travel due to an illness, job loss or immediate family member's medical emergency
  • You need to return home earlier than scheduled because of a family emergency or medical condition

Note : We strongly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance at the time you pay your initial travel deposit. Please see the policy document for complete coverage details, including terms and conditions.

Canadian TV host Cheryl Hickey says lack of affordable care for seniors 'infuriates' her: 'You have no choice'

The former "et canada" host and her mother posed together in a new magazine cover..

Cheryl Hickey and her mom are advocating for improved home care for seniors. On Sunday, the former "ET Canada" host took to Instagram with a carousel of photos , starting with a snap of Mind Over Matter magazine's latest issue with herself and her mother, Lori Hickey, on the front cover.

In the cover photo , the Canadian TV host and her mom hugged in matching all-blue outfits in front of a matching blue backdrop. Cheryl shared an excerpt from the feature article about her father, John Hickey, who passed away in 2023 after developing progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder that causes dementia.

The article explained John had become paralyzed from the neck down and spent his final five years living in a care facility. While Cheryl and Lori speak "highly" about the facility, they were left "angry" at the lack of affordable home care options that were available.

"In our society, it's unfortunate that couples who spent 40, 50, 60 years together have to end up being separated in the final stages of life due to illness," Lori weighed in. "Why can't we make home care affordable? Unless you're a multimillionaire you have no choice but to move into a [care] facility," Cheryl added . "That infuriates me."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cheryl Hickey — TV Host (@cherylhickey)

In the caption , Cheryl reiterated the importance of addressing issues facing the elder generation, a sentiment she shares with her late father. She noted that she was initially hesitant to participate in the magazine feature and share her anger for "how our parents' generation is being treated.

"I couldn't decide if opening that pain from when dad was alive would be healthy for me. Turns out it was exactly what I needed. I know he would want us to say something. He always did," she penned.

Cheryl emphasized seniors should be able to live out their days in the home they spent their "entire life" working for. "It can't be only the wealthy who given this right, this gift," she wrote .

Her post also shed light on her mom's incredible journey, from arriving in Canada with very little to her name to overcoming countless obstacles with unwavering determination. "From coming to Canada on the boat in Halifax with one small suitcase for her family, to working farm to farm, living in place that was so difficult, only having two changes of clothes as a child, to getting her first toy at 12, to where she is now… is inspiring to say the least. I respect where she has been and the mental strength it has taken to get her where she is," Cheryl shared .

Fans flooded the comment section with supportive messages for the Hickey family.

"What a beautiful cover. And the story is even more impactful. I’m glad you said something. If not us, than who? We need to protect the ones who protected us," Canadian "Cityline" host Tracy Moore commented .

"Amazing!" CTV's "CP24" host Melissa Grelo chimed in.

"Powerful article," fellow former "ET Canada" personality Sangita Patel wrote .

"This is such an important thing for us to be talking about. The way society treats old people after they spent their entire lives working for the man is unacceptable. Thank you for speaking up and telling your story. Our parents deserve better," a fan commented .

"Our parents have contributed so much to society and their needs are discarded in their old age many times as options are limited. More needs to be done in caring for our elderly. Their final years should not be a struggle for them and their family," another added .

Back in 2020, Hickey shared another candid Instagram post about her father while he was still living at the care facility.

Alongside a photo of herself and her dad dancing at her wedding. "Every day we get an update from the long term care home where dad has been been having to live," she wrote in the caption before explaining that at the time, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there had been an increase of residents passing away.

"I wake up some mornings nauseous in anticipation. Every morning my heart is feeling like my dads world is getting smaller and smaller tighter and tighter," she said . "Some days I find it hard to breath."

More seniors are using Montreal's Metro thanks to free fare program

Program launched in july 2023.

canada travel for seniors

Social Sharing

A costly program offering free public transportation fares to Montreal seniors is paying off, the city said in a recent report as it documented a spike in transit use among people age 65 and older.

In the six months since the program launched on July 1, 2023, the city said the number of trips taken by those in the target age group surged between 15 and 20 per cent. The findings were contained in a 2025 budget planning document the city published Tuesday.

Forty-seven per cent of eligible Montreal-area residents had signed up for the program by the end of 2023, the city said.

"The measure has therefore resulted in both savings and increased mobility for seniors," the document reads.

First announced in late 2022, the program allows residents of the Montreal agglomeration — comprised of the city of Montreal and suburbs on Montreal island — who are 65 or older to use the metro, buses, commuter and light-rail trains for free within the jurisdiction. Paratransit, or specialized rides for people with disabilities, is also free for program beneficiaries.

Montreal dedicated $24 million to the initiative in its 2023 budget and earmarked another $34.3 million to continue it in 2024. Over the same period, the city's financially beleaguered public transit agency, the Société de transport de Montréal  (STM), has cut nearly $140 million from its own budget.

But several metro riders said Saturday that the program has myriad benefits for older adults.

  • Public transit to be free for seniors in Montreal, city announces
  • Montreal senior calls for STM to fix city's broken Metro escalators, elevators

"I think that for low-income people its a way to break isolation, to get out," Huguette Bergeron, 74, said outside of the Place-d'Armes Metro station downtown.

Anne Chenot, 70, said she sees the program as "little compensation" for high local taxes.

Both women said they're taking advantage of the offer even though they would have been able to afford the regular $97 monthly fare. They hope to see similar programs targeting residents who might benefit from the financial relief, such as students.

Robert Martin said the program's broad eligibility criteria are likely boosting participation. A program that limits eligibility by income, he said, might create barriers for prospective participants who would have to prove their financial situation.

Martin plans to register for the free fare when he turns 65 next March. As someone who has never owned a car, he expects the program will increase his mobility.

"Does everyone need it? I'm not sure," he said. "But it's easier for [the city] than just asking for proof that you're, let's say, poor or middle class."

Which Credit Cards Have the Best Insurance for Seniors?

Insurance coverage offered by credit cards often doesn’t get the same attention as a card’s other benefits. However, it’s an important element to be aware of, particularly for travellers over the age of 65.

While some insurance coverage is fairly comparable among credit cards within the same tier, this isn’t the case when it comes to emergency medical coverage, which can differ dramatically between the cards.

In this guide, we’ll outline the best options for securing coverage for you or your loved ones.

Emergency Medical Care Outside of Your Province of Residence

Before delving into the cards themselves, it’s important to go over what this insurance covers, and to establish a baseline of the lower-end of what you can expect in terms of coverage.

Emergency medical care insurance coverage is designed to reimburse you for a certain dollar amount in the event that you’re injured or experience a medical emergency while travelling outside your home province.

This coverage becomes even more relevant if you’re travelling internationally, where it may be more difficult to navigate and understand the local medical system and its costs.

With coverage, not only do you have peace of mind when you travel, but you can also prioritize getting care without worry, should you run into some bad luck.

As we mentioned above, the emergency medical care coverage can vary considerably across different credit cards; therefore, to establish a baseline from which to compare, let’s first look at the coverage offered by two popular cards.

Our first example, the American Express Cobalt Card, offers emergency medical coverage for the first 15 consecutive days of your trip if you’re 64 years old or under; however, once the cardholder turns 65, there’s no coverage at all.

Looking at higher-end cards, the TD Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card offers emergency medical coverage for an incrementally better four days if you’re 65 or older.

As we can see, neither of these cards offers much in the way of emergency medical coverage for travellers over 65.

Therefore, you’ll want to consider a credit card that provides the best insurance for anyone travelling in their golden years.

As always, be sure to read the card’s insurance booklet to understand what’s covered in your specific situation. If you ever have any questions, reach out to the card issuer to confirm what’s included.

National Bank World Elite Mastercard

In Canada, the gold standard of insurance coverage is set by the National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Travellers over 65 years old are covered for up to 15 days when travelling out of province. The coverage lasts until you turn 76, at which point you’re no longer covered.

It’s also important to note that if you have a pre-existing illness or injury or if there have been changes to your health within six months of your departure date, you won’t be covered if you suffer an accident directly or indirectly related to the pre-existing condition.

If you qualify for coverage, National Bank will cover you up to $5,000,000 for emergency medical care if you end up needing it.

We consider the National Bank World Elite Mastercard as the best credit card for insurance in Canada. If you make a booking with points, you’ll also be covered, which is another one of the card’s mainstay features.

  • Earn 5 x rewards points on grocery and restaurant spend
  • Get travel insurance on award travel, as well as medical coverage on longer trips for ages up to 75.
  • Receive $150 in annual credits for airport parking, baggage fees, seat selection fees, lounge access, and airline ticket upgrades
  • Minimum income: $80,000 personal or $150,000 household
  • Annual fee: $150

HSBC World Elite Mastercard

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard has historically been another staple in Canadians’ wallets, due to its lack of foreign exchange fees. However, following the announcement that RBC would acquire HSBC, the card has subsequently been closed to new applications as of October 2023.

It’s unclear what the future holds for this and other HSBC cards, but if you’re currently a cardholder, then it’s business as usual until we hear otherwise.

This is good news, as the HSBC World Elite Mastercard also has quite a generous policy when it comes to emergency medical coverage for seniors.

For people 65 years of age or older, you receive emergency medical coverage for up to 21 consecutive days after you leave your province of residence. This is an improvement over the length of coverage from the National Bank World Elite Mastercard, and there’s no upper limit specified for age, which is outstanding.

While HSBC has a more favourable inclusion list, the insurance coverage is less, at $2,000,000 instead of the $5,000,000 offered by National Bank.

Combined with no foreign transaction fees, competitive earning rates, and generous insurance policy for seniors, it’s no wonder the HSBC World Elite Mastercard was such a popular choice among Canadians.

Desjardins Odyssey Visa Infinite Privilege

A less talked about card that deserves a spot on this list is the Desjardins Odyssey Visa Infinite Privilege Card, which has a similar insurance structure to the National Bank World Elite Mastercard.

If you’re 65 or older, you’re eligible for emergency medical coverage for up to 15 days from when you leave the province in which you reside. However, once you turn 76, you would no longer be eligible for any coverage.

You’ll be covered up to a maximum of $5,000,000 per person, excluding situations where you have a pre-existing condition, in which case, you won’t be covered if your accident while travelling is related to said condition.

Note that your pre-existing condition window goes back 182 days from date of departure.

Unlike the other cards on this list, the Desjardins Odyssey Visa Infinite Privilege is a cash back card, rather than a travel-focused card. It has an annual fee of $295 (CAD) for members, or $395 (CAD) for non-members, which is a fairly steep fee to pay.

CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card

When it comes to emergency medical coverage, especially for those older than 65, the CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card comes out ahead of its premium Aeroplan co-branded credit card counterparts.

The CIBC Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card offers 10 consecutive days of coverage for people 65 or older, which is more than its TD counterpart’s four days of coverage.

As usual, pre-existing conditions exclude you from coverage if your emergency is related or indirectly related to your existing condition.

However, keep in mind that unlike the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or the Desjardins Odyssey Visa Infinite Privilege Card, there’s no specified age maximum for coverage. Therefore, you’ll still be eligible for insurance, even if you’re over the age of 76.

This card is a great addition to your wallet if you tend to make shorter trips away from home, and want to remain in the Aeroplan ecosystem.

You’ll also enjoy benefits like lounge access, priority services, and a free checked bag when travelling with Air Canada.

While most credit cards don’t offer travel insurance coverage for travellers over the age of 65, and even fewer cover those who are 76 and older, there are still a few standout cards that extend emergency medical protection to travellers in their golden years.

Having emergency medical coverage while you’re travelling is an important way to stay safe and healthy, and to provide yourself and your loved ones with peace of mind.

No matter your age, there’s a card out there that will extend some sort of coverage to you, so make sure to keep that in mind before embarking on your next adventure.

  • Annual fee: $799

Go through the insurance with a highlight marker, and then mark your concerns. Get answers to your questions before you go. For pre-existing conditions, some only allow them to be stable for 3 months beforehand, others 6 months.

Thanks for the article

Speaking as a senior, I would never rely on a credit card for emergency medical travel insurance. Most seniors are on some sort of medication and/or have pre-existing conditions. Most travel insurance, both CC and private, has a long list of conditions and exclusions. You usually only find out about them AFTER you make a claim.

If you’re concerned about emergency medical situations when you travel outside Canada, then find a travel insurer who will cover you without excluding pre-existing conditions or at least make sure they tell you beforehand what you’re actually covered for based on your specific medical conditions. Naturally, expect to pay more, perhaps a lot more, than younger people for coverage that you can actually rely on should you need it.

Otherwise you’re just gambling.
