Canon aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions from its business activities by 2050

We will achieve this by delivering an average improvement of 3% per year in the lifecycle CO2 emissions improvement index per product. Which if sustained would mean roughly a 50% reduction from 2008 levels by the year 2030. We recognise this to be in line with the level of reduction called for by the Paris Agreement. We will continue to undertake target reviews from a long-term perspective as a way of checking our contribution to the realisation of a low-carbon society.

What is the Canon EOS 2000D?

Looking to take your first steps into DSLR photography? The EOS 2000D is Canon’s latest entry-level model, replacing the similarly affordable EOS 1300D.

It retains most of the 1300D’s core features,  with the main upgrade being a boost in sensor resolution. You don’t get too many exciting bells and whistles, but it does offer a route into the fun world of DSLR photography at a pretty low price point.

If you have a little more cash to splash, then you might consider Canon’s ‘premium’ entry-level model, the EOS 800D.  Or, if you’re really struggling to get together some funds, the EOS 4000D (currently in our test lab) is Canon’s super-cheap model.

Smaller mirrorless cameras such as the Panasonic GX80 are also worth considering, but few offer a built-in viewfinder at the EOS 2000D’s price point.

Canon EOS 2000D – Design and features

The EOS 2000D isn’t a radical reinvention of the 13000D.  That isn’t strictly a bad thing, but it’s disappointing that features starting to become the norm still aren’t included in Canon’s entry-model. 4K and a touchscreen being two that spring to mind.

The 2000D’s main change from its predecessor is the sensor. It remains a  APS-C CMOS device, but it now has 24.1 megapixels, compared with the 18 megapixels of the 1300D’s much older sensor.

We’ve seen this 24.1-megapixel sensor before, in the EOS 750D , but it’s a generation behind the one found in the 800D. If you’re already shooting with a 1300D, it’s unlikely to be enough of an upgrade to consider switching to this model. But if it’s your first DSLR then you might well appreciate the bump in resolution, since it provides greater scope for cropping your photos or printing them out at larger sizes.

Canon EOS 2000D

To keep costs down, the 2000D uses Canon’s older Digic 4+ processor, which is the same that features in the 1300D. Newer Canon models such as the EOS M50  are now using the Digic 8 processor, but it still offers decent performance for basic shooting.

You get a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400, which you can expand up to 12,800. Similarly, the 9-point AF system is identical – but, sadly, doesn’t make use of the Dual Pixel AF you’ll find in other Canon DSLRs.

Still, even though there’s no 4K video for vlogging, Full HD video recording is present. Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity is on board, but there’s no Bluetooth, which is similar to other Canon entry-level DSLRs, including the EOS 800D . This is disappointing, since low-power Bluetooth lets cameras keep a constant connection with a smartphone for easy photo sharing.

Canon EOS 2000D

In the hand, the 2000D doesn’t feel premium, but it’s helped a little by a textured coating around the reasonably chunky grip. Buttons are both well-sized and well-placed, with a large mode dial on the top of the camera. A bunch of mostly self-explanatory buttons can be found on the rear of the camera, to control its various settings.

Canon EOS 2000D – Screen and viewfinder

Another feature inherited from the 1300D is the optical viewfinder, which offers 95% coverage of the frame. Bear this in mind when composing your images, as something might creep into the edge of your shot.

Some people are adamant that optical viewfinders are better than electronic. Both have their benefits and downsides. For example, an optical viewfinder offers a bright, real-time view of what you’re seeing, minus lag or noise in low light. But it can’t display the changes you’re making to a shot in real-time, unless you switch to Live view on the screen.

These days, we’d take a high-resolution EVF over optical units that leave bits out of the frame. But optical viewfinders are much more affordable a have battery life benefits too.

Canon EOS 2000D

Similarly, the screen is also the same as the 1300D’s: a fixed, 3.0-inch, 920k-dot panel. Not being able to tilt or articulate it is less than useful for awkward angles (or selfies), but the viewing angle is reasonably good, and the display itself is bright and clear.

There’s no touch functionality here – a disappointment for a camera in 2018 – but an understandable decision taken by Canon in order to keep the 2000D as affordable as possible.

Canon EOS 2000D – Performance

You can tell that the 2000D’s 9-point AF system has been around for some time; it’s really starting to show its age now. Grouped around the centre of the frame, 9 points don’t give you a whole lot to work with, so you’ll probably find you spend much time focusing and recomposing if your subjects are anywhere off-centre.

In terms of performance, only the centre point is of the more sensitive cross-type. You’ll want to engage this point as light levels drop – but, otherwise, the other focus points do a decent job of locking onto the subject in ordinary daylight.

You can activate the screen to shoot in Live view, but since the 2000D doesn’t utilise Dual Pixel CMOS AF, don’t expect focusing speeds to be lightning-quick. Still, it’s a good option for still-life and macro-type subjects – or anything you might be shooting with the aid of a tripod.

If you’ve got any intention to shoot action or sports, the 2000D is a pretty poor choice. It offers just 3fps shooting, meaning you’re likely to miss key pieces of the action.

Canon EOS 2000D

The 2000D’s battery life is rated at 500 shots. This is one area where DSLRs still have the upper hand over similarly specced and priced compact system cameras. There’s enough juice to last you at least a couple of days of average shooting.

However, it should be noted that the Nikon D3400 , the 2000D’s main rival, boasts more than double the 2000D’s battery life at 1200 shots.

Canon EOS 2000D – Image quality and video

While the Canon EOS 2000D might not have some of the most exciting specs on the market, it still delivers decent images – especially in good lighting conditions.

Here are some sample shots, which display the camera’s capabilities. Full HD video is also nicely rendered, and while this is unlikely to be a camera that particularly appeals to videographers, for those who just want to grab a few home movies and the like, it’s a good alternative to your phone.

Canon EOS 2000D

The supplied kit lens does a decent job of producing high-quality images, making it a good option to get you going.

Canon EOS 2000DClose-up photo of green ferns with a soft-focus backgroundClose-up photo of green fern leaves with soft background bokeh.

Canon’s EF-S mount is compatible with hundreds of different lenses, giving you room to grow your collection when you get bored of the kit option. This was taken with an EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Canon EOS 2000D

Colours are lovely and vibrant in JPEG images directly from the 2000D – something we’ve come to expect from Canon sensors.

Canon EOS 2000DInterior of a church captured with Canon EOS 2000D.

In lower light some loss of detail is evident, with areas of the image a little smudgy. This shot has been taken at ISO 640.

Canon EOS 2000DInterior of a church captured with Canon EOS 2000D.

In this image shot at ISO 3200, image smoothing is even more evident, especially when looking at the image at A4 or larger. ISO 3200 is the maximum I’d prefer to shoot at with this camera. On the plus side, the camera’s processing has done a good job of keeping noise at bay.

Canon EOS 2000D

Out of focus areas are rendered nicely, which is one of the benefits a large sensor brings.

Canon EOS 2000D

The 2000D’s all-purpose metering does a decent job of getting exposures right. Occasionally, however, when shooting a high-contrast scene such as this, you may find you need to dial in a little exposure compensation to get the look you want.

Canon EOS 2000D

There’s plenty of detail rendered by the 24-megapixel sensor – a resolution increase from the 2000D’s 18-megapixel offering.

Why buy the Canon EOS 2000D?

Since it’s only a relatively minor upgrade on the 1300D, the 2000D ends up being a bit of a damp squib. It’s disappointing not to see a little more pizzazz and, s adly for Canon, the Nikon D3400 is probably the more sensible choice if you’re looking for your very first DSLR.

Canon EOS 2000D

If you’re swayed by the idea of a Canon DSLR and its large range of lenses, however, the 2000D is certainly a model to consider.  As it stands, you can pick up the 1300D for around £170 less than 2000D, so if budgetary constraints are your main concern then that would probably be a wiser purchase.

If you can stretch a little, you could – and probably should – also consider Canon’s own 200D , while the 800D would be even better.

Canon EOS 2000D – The rivals

Nikon D3400

canon eos 2000d travel kit

The Nikon D3400 has been around for a while, but remains hard to beat for those looking for their very first DSLR. You get a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, an intuitive guide mode to help you along, 5fps shooting, Bluetooth connectivity and a class-leading battery life of 1200 shots. It’s also significantly cheaper than the 2000D, owing to its older age.

Panasonic GX80

Panasonic Lumix GX80

If you just want a first camera, but aren’t rigid about it being a DSLR, then you can do far worse than the Panasonic GX80. This small and light compact system camera is a great option for beginners, but with far more advanced specifications than the 2000D (and the D3400 for that matter).

For around £400 (including a kit lens), you get a touch-sensitive tilting screen, 4K Photo and Video, 8fps shooting, an electronic viewfinder and a 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor.

Canon EOS 2000D

This beginner DSLR is a decent option for a first-time buyer, but is far from the only, or best, model on the market.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Camera Review

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Picture

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D is an entry-level camera with an APS-C sensor and the cheapest model in Canon's DSLR lineup. It's an upgrade from its predecessor, the Canon EOS Rebel T6 / EOS 1300D, with a higher-resolution 24-megapixel sensor, but otherwise, it doesn't offer any major improvement to the formula. That's not bad for those looking for a simple and affordable DSLR for photography, but don't expect extras like an articulated touchscreen or 4k video capability.

Our Verdict

The Canon Rebel T7 is okay for travel photography. The camera captures good image quality overall, especially if you're coming from a smartphone. It's bulkier than mirrorless alternatives, and its autofocus system is very rudimentary. Its battery life isn't as good as higher-end DSLR cameras, but it's still good overall and better than a lot of mirrorless options. And despite a somewhat cheap-feeling build quality, the camera at least feels comfortable to shoot with.

  • Good image quality for its class.
  • Decent ergonomics.
  • Solid battery life for photography.
  • Cheap-feeling construction.
  • Mediocre autofocus performance.
  • Not the most portable.

The Canon Rebel T7 is adequate for landscape photography. Its image quality pales compared to full-frame or higher-end APS-C cameras, but it's still very solid for its class. Though its dynamic range is unremarkable, you can still get great landscape shots out of it, especially with good lighting conditions. The camera is also fairly comfortable to use, with simple controls tailored towards beginner photographers, though more advanced shooters may find the lack of command dials limiting. Unfortunately, it also feels quite cheaply made and isn't weather-sealed.

  • Mediocre dynamic range.

The Canon Rebel T7 isn't well-suited for sports and wildlife photography. It has a very slow burst rate, making it much harder to capture distinct images of fast-moving subjects, and its photo buffer isn't very deep, especially when shooting in RAW format. While the camera has a face-tracking feature, it struggles to keep up with faster subjects and can't focus on the edges of the frame. Its plastic construction also doesn't feel as solid as more expensive models. On the upside, image quality is good for its class.

  • Slow burst rate.

The Canon Rebel T7 has okay RAW photo performance. Its noise handling is decent in low light, but it has a limited ISO range, so you'll need to either slow down your shutter speed or use a wide-aperture lens to get great results in darker settings. Images look fairly detailed and decently sharp, thanks to the sensor's high resolution. However, the sensor's dynamic range is somewhat limited, so you'll lose some highlight or shadow detail in high-contrast scenes.

  • Fairly high resolution.
  • Decent noise handling for its class.
  • Limited ISO range.
  • Dynamic range is just okay.

The Canon Rebel T7 is a poor fit for vlogging, though this isn't its intended use. It's limited to 1080p recording, and its screen is fixed, so you can't see yourself when the camera's facing you. It's also bulkier than mirrorless alternatives, making it a hassle to carry around for on-the-go vlogs. Video quality isn't especially impressive either, with videos having a somewhat grainy quality, and its autofocus system doesn't offer continuous tracking while shooting video.

  • Easy to use menu system.
  • No 4k recording.
  • Poor recording quality in 1080p.
  • Fixed screen can't be seen when camera is pointed at you.
  • No continuous tracking autofocus while recording video.

The Canon Rebel T7 isn't meant for studio video. It can only record video in 1080p, and its overall video quality is poor. It also has a limited selection of inputs and outputs, with no microphone or headphone jack. Its autofocus system also doesn't support continuous tracking in video, making it difficult to maintain focus on moving subjects.

  • Limited selection of inputs and outputs.

The Canon Rebel T7 isn't designed for action video. It's too big to be mounted on a helmet or chest rig and isn't weather-sealed. It also doesn't support 4k recording and can't record at high-speed frame rates for smooth action video or slow-motion footage.

  • No high frame rate options.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D is only available in one color: 'Black', and you can see our unit's label here .

This camera is sold as the Rebel T7 in the North American market, the Kiss X90 in Japan, the 1500D in southeast Asia, and the EOS 2000D elsewhere. You can buy it bundled with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens. You can purchase the camera body without a bundled lens and buy other native or third-party lenses separately.

Let us know if you come across a different variant so we can update our review.

Compared To Other Cameras

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D is a simple budget DSLR. It has a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, basic controls, and a fixed screen. Though build quality leaves a lot to be desired, the sensor is still decent for a starter camera, and there are plenty of excellent EF and EF-S lenses to choose from if you want to step up the quality of your photos. That said, compared to modern mirrorless cameras, its autofocus system is very limited, and it can't record 4k video. Stepping up to the latest Rebel 'i' model, the Canon EOS Rebel T8i will get you a noticeably better sensor and AF system.

If you're looking for more options, you can also check out our recommendations for the best cameras for beginners , the best cheap and budget cameras , or the best DSLR cameras .

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D and Canon EOS R100 are both beginner-oriented cameras with different designs, but ultimately, the newer R100 offers a much wider breadth of capability. The mirrorless R100 is smaller and lighter, feels better built, has a brighter and sharper display, and has a more intuitive menu system. It also has a much more effective autofocus system, plenty of automatic scene shooting modes, and can record 4k video, albeit with a severe crop and a max frame rate of 24 fps. While the Rebel T7 has Canon's EF/EF-S lens mount, which currently offers a much wider array of budget-friendly lenses, you can always use them with an R100 via an EF-EOS R lens mount adapter, although that comes at an additional cost and some added bulk.

The Canon EOS M50 is better overall than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. It has some extras that you don't get with the T7, like a fully articulated touchscreen and 4k video capability. It's also more portable. That said, the M mount is a mostly defunct lens ecosystem, whereas the EF/EF-S mount has a wider range of lens options available.

The Canon EOS R50 is better than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. It uses newer mirrorless technology, with a more advanced and effective autofocus system, a sensor that captures slightly better overall image quality, and significantly quicker burst shooting. In addition, it has much more advanced video features, including 4k recording capability.

The Nikon D3500 is better overall than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. While both are entry-level cameras with some of the same limitations, the D3500 has a better sensor, resulting in slightly better overall image quality. It also has a faster max burst rate, a significantly longer battery life, and a built-in 'Guide Mode' to walk beginners through the basics of photography.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is a bit better than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. It's a newer camera with a better sensor and processor, resulting in better overall image quality. It's also a bit better built, has a fully articulated screen, longer battery life, and is capable of recording 4k video.

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D and the  Sony α6000  are different camera types, and each has its own advantages. The Sony is a mirrorless model, so it's significantly more portable, has a better autofocus system, and shoots at a faster max burst rate. Conversely, the Canon has a longer battery life and a lag-free optical viewfinder, as well as a more intuitive user interface.

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i is better than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D. Though both use 24 MP sensors, the T8i is newer, with a better processor, resulting in better overall image quality. It also has a more advanced and effective autofocus system, along with extra features like a vari-angle touchscreen and 4k video capability.

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II is better than the Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D, though they use different camera technologies. The M50 Mark II is a mirrorless camera, so it's a lot more portable than the T7, and its electronic viewfinder lets you see image adjustments in real-time. It also has a better sensor and processor, a better autofocus system, and additional features like 4k video capability.

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D is a bit better than the Canon EOS Rebel T100 / EOS 4000D , though they're very similar overall. Both are simple, budget DSLR cameras that can be paired with Canon EF-S or EF lenses. That said, while both use APS-C sensors, the T7 has a higher resolution, creating slightly more detailed images with a bit more leeway to crop. The T7 also has a slightly larger, higher-resolution screen, and its materials feel a bit higher quality, but otherwise, the two cameras perform very similarly.

Test Results

perceptual testing image

The Canon Rebel T7 isn't the most compact, especially compared to mirrorless alternatives like the Canon EOS M50 . But it's still fairly portable overall and less bulky than full-frame DSLRs like the Canon EOS 6D Mark II .

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Build Quality Picture

The Canon Rebel T7 has a plastic exterior. While it doesn't feel as premium as pricier models like the Canon EOS Rebel T8i , it's solid overall. The buttons also provide decent physical feedback, though they can be slightly sluggish to respond to inputs.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Hand Grip Picture

The camera feels decently comfortable in the hand, though the grip is a little on the smaller side for those with very large hands. The texture around the hand grip is nice and grippy, though, and the thumb rest is well-placed. The simple controls and single command dial are well-suited to novice users but make it harder to adjust settings on the fly when shooting in manual mode.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D EVF Menu Picture

The optical viewfinder (OVF) is a good size, though the rubber eyecup around it can get a little uncomfortable after a while.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Screen Picture

The Canon Rebel T7 uses a fixed screen, making it harder to take photos from waist level or shoot from unusual angles. It doesn't get overly bright, and resolution falls behind higher-end models. Unlike the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 or the Canon EOS Rebel T8i , there's no touch capability.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Screen Menu Picture

The user interface is quite simple and easy to use. However, it's less intuitive than the menus on newer Canons like the Canon EOS Rebel T8i . For instance, not all settings are available at all times. You need to be in video mode to adjust video settings, and certain options are only accessible either in live view mode or when shooting through the viewfinder.

Battery life isn't bad on the Canon T7. Canon doesn't mention the expected battery life on its website, but the T7 is reported to have a 500-shot CIPA rating when shooting through the viewfinder. That drops down to 240 shots when using the monitor in Live View. It isn't nearly as good as Canon DSLRs with higher-capacity batteries, like the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 . However, CIPA ratings don't necessarily translate into real-world usage. Your mileage will vary depending on your shooting habits and settings.

The camera's video battery life isn't great. You'll get roughly an hour of continuous video recording in FHD, as the camera can't record in 4k. Video isn't this camera's forte, though, so it's not unexpected.

The Canon Rebel T7 has a slow max burst rate and can only shoot at one speed, making it harder to capture sequential bursts of fast-moving subjects. It also has a very small photo buffer, especially if you're shooting in RAW format. If you max out the buffer, it also takes a little while to empty before you can start shooting again.

The Canon Rebel T7 has a pretty basic autofocus system. It includes a face detection feature that can detect and focus on faces in single shooting mode. However, it lacks the Dual Pixel Autofocus found on higher-end Canon DSLRs like the Canon EOS Rebel T7i or the Canon EOS Rebel T8i . That means there's no continuous tracking function that can actively maintain focus on moving subjects while shooting continuously.

While there's no algorithm-based tracking on this camera, it still has continuous autofocus (called 'AI Servo' on Canon cameras), which does well at keeping up with any subject underneath your chosen focus point. The camera is limited to a small cluster of focus points around the center of the frame, making it harder to shoot subjects off-center. If you keep your subject framed in the center, however, the camera does an excellent job of keeping the target in focus.

There's no in-body image stabilization on the T7, so you'll have to rely on optically stabilized lenses to get stable shots at slower shutter speeds. Still, the optical stabilization in Canon EF and EF-S lenses works quite well, allowing you to capture clear shots at slow shutter speeds. That said, stabilization performance can vary depending on your lens, its focal length, weight, and even the steadiness of your hands.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Dynamic Range Scene

The camera's dynamic range is okay. It can't capture a wide array of detail in high-contrast scenes, so you'll likely lose shadow or highlight detail in trickier lighting conditions.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Sharpness Scene Crop

The camera's sensor has a fairly high resolution, capturing decently sharp images, but you lose some finer details and textures. However, this is most apparent when punching in or cropping.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Noise Scene Crop

Noise handling is decent, considering the camera's class, though noise quickly becomes more apparent in trickier lighting conditions. It maxes out at ISO 6400, so its low light capability is limited compared to newer cameras with higher ISO settings. That means you'll have to rely on slower shutter speeds or faster lenses with wider apertures for really low light conditions.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Sample Gallery - Skate Park

The camera's video features are quite limited. It can only record video in full HD, without any extra or more advanced features like Log recording or even clean HDMI output.

This camera can't shoot 4k video. If you're looking for a similar Canon camera that can record in 4k, consider the mirrorless Canon EOS R100 , but be aware that it can only record 4k with a significant crop.

Unfortunately, this camera doesn't include any high frame rate options for slow-motion or fast action video. It can record 1080p video at up to 30 fps, so it's suitable for everyday video capture or more cinematic 24 fps video.

Internal recording is passable. Unfortunately, its maximum recording time is capped at 12 minutes, so you can't use the camera for longer continuous takes. Bit rates are also mediocre, meaning it can't capture a wide range of information for higher-quality videos.

The Canon Rebel T7 doesn't have an AF tracking mode in video, meaning it can't continuously track moving subjects as you record, though its face detection feature still works. That means it's best suited to talking head videos or videos where your subject stays in the same focal plane since you'll have to manually half-press the shutter to refocus whenever the subject moves. Using a more basic lens like the kit lens also results in very slow and noisy focusing, with a lot of pulsing and chasing, which isn't ideal for video recording.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D FHD Test Scene Extract In FHD

The camera's video quality is poor overall. It especially struggles in low light, with very grainy footage and a significant loss of detail in the shadows.

Rolling shutter effect is fairly noticeable. It isn't terrible, but you'll see skewed vertical lines when panning the camera quickly.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Card Slot Picture

The camera has a single SD card slot, rated for slower UHS-I cards. It's located on the bottom of the camera next to the battery compartment, making it harder to switch out cards when using a tripod.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D Input Picture

The camera's inputs and outputs are limited. There's no mic or headphone jacks, though that isn't surprising given the camera's limited video capabilities. Otherwise, you just have a Mini USB port for charging and file transfer and an HDMI Mini port to connect to an external display. Unlike newer models, the camera doesn't support Bluetooth connectivity, though you can still wirelessly transfer photos to a phone over Wi-Fi.

Nanna Heitmann

German miners covered in coal dust and wearing hard hats emerge from a narrow, dark elevator.

German miners emerge from the narrow, dark elevator that leads to the coal face, thousands of metres underground, in this 2017 photograph taken by Canon Ambassador Nanna Heitmann, as part of her long-term project, Gone From the Window. Taken on a Canon EOS 5DS R with a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens at 1/160 sec, f/2.5 and ISO1600. © Nanna Heitmann

"For me, photography is an excuse to meet all kinds of different people, from politicians to coal miners to punks," says documentary photographer and Canon Ambassador Nanna Heitmann. "I get to know people I would otherwise never have met or had the chance to see into their lives." Nanna's curiosity about people who are physically, mentally or culturally isolated, and how their environment shapes them, drives much of her work. Her photographs have been published in magazines including National Geographic, Time and The New York Times. In 2019, she won the prestigious Sunday Times Award for Achievement and was invited to join Magnum Photos as a nominee.

Nanna was born in Ulm, Germany, in 1994 to a Russian mother and a German father. She was educated in Germany and completed a degree in photojournalism and documentary photography at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. She bought her first DSLR, a Canon EOS 400D (now succeeded by the Canon EOS 850D ), when she was 14, and her passion for documentary photography was ignited by reading National Geographic as a teenager. "I was fascinated by the magazine's stories about things I'd never heard about in another part of the world," she says. Since then, inspired by her National Geographic heroes, Nanna has worked on long-term projects that often highlight the lives of people in extreme situations or on the margins of society. These have included Gone From the Window, a study of the community around Germany's last coal mine, and Hiding From Baba Yaga, which focuses on isolated people living near the Yenisei River in Siberia. "When I work on a project, I start looking at my surroundings in a totally different way," Nanna says. "I have an almost childlike sense of curiosity, the kind we lose when we become adults. I pay much more attention to the small details I wouldn't normally notice."

This image of an elderly patient who had been given a bouquet in Moscow City Clinical Hospital 52 is part of Nanna's recent series on the Covid-19 pandemic. Taken on a Canon EOS R with a Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM lens at 1/640 sec, f/2.5 and ISO1600. © Nanna Heitmann/Magnum Photos

Nanna photographed Nurse Patimat at a hospital in Makhachkala as part of her project, Pandemic in Russia, about the ongoing struggle against Covid-19 in the country. Taken on a Canon EOS R with a Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM lens at 1/400 sec, f/2 and ISO320. © Nanna Heitmann/Magnum Photos

One of Nanna's most recent projects, Pandemic in Russia, examined the battle against Covid-19 in a country with one of the world's highest infection rates. She photographed the work of charities helping society's most vulnerable and the reality of daily life in Moscow's overwhelmed hospitals. It was the most challenging project she has done so far, she says. "I'd never worked really on something like that, a crisis situation, so for me it was really shocking to see thousands of people suffering so much, or dying in front of me," Nanna explains. "It was also difficult in a practical way because I was wearing full PPE for 12 hours at a time without drinking or eating. I really admired the doctors working in this demanding situation for 24 or 28 hours at a time with breaks of only 12 or 24 hours between shifts."

An older man wearing a breathing tube lies down on a sofa.

Former miner Alfons fights the consequences of a lifetime working with coal in this telling image. "The inhaled coal dust led to a malignant form of silicosis and caused lung cancer. His illness was recognised as an occupational disease," says Nanna. Taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III (now succeeded by the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV ) with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens at 24mm, 1/250 sec, f/2.8 and ISO1600. © Nanna Heitmann

Although her projects span a range of subjects, Nanna says her aim is always to draw attention to the situation of the people she's photographing. "When I'm doing journalistic work, I want to raise awareness of the topic," she says. "I also want to record things of cultural significance that are disappearing. For example, when I was photographing coal mining in Germany, I was aware that this industry, which was so important for the postwar German economy, wouldn't exist in the near future. But sometimes I'm motivated by something other than raising awareness or creating a historical document. Sometimes I just want to take the viewer into another world."

  • Dangerous Occupations

A miner covered in coal dust eats lunch at a table.

How do you find the people you photograph? "It's a mixture of planning and coincidence. For my project on Germany's last coal mine, for example, the company allowed me to walk around and meet people, and I found others through miners' cultural associations. On a road trip, however, I often meet people by accident. If I'm following a feeling, I seem to attract more people to photograph." Do you know what a project is going to be about before you start? Or does it develop gradually? "Some stories are as I expect, such as the one on Covid-19, but most of the time projects change a lot from the way they begin. On my current project, for instance, I went on a road trip to photograph people in a certain area but by coincidence ended up in another place and community, so it became a completely different project." How long do you normally work on a project? "It totally depends on the subject, but I'm not a person who could work on something for many years. I'm not sure I would have the patience to do that. When I come to a new place, I see so much, but after a while I see less and new pictures appear more slowly." How can documentary photographers stand out from the crowd? "For me it was important to have a solid portfolio – at least two bodies of work you can show to editors and use to apply for competitions and grants. Even if you don't win, the same important people such as picture editors are sitting on so many juries. If they continue to see your work there's a chance they will commission you." What's been the highlight of your career so far? "Career-wise, it was very unexpected and a blessing to become a Magnum nominee in 2019. I still can't really believe it and I'm super happy about it."

One thing I know

Canon EOS R

With a full-frame 30.3MP sensor, ISO performance and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the Canon EOS R offers the ultimate shooting experience. "I like using the Canon EOS R for its small size and features like the touchscreen and the ability to change the aspect ratios of the picture," says Nanna.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

The successor to Nanna's Canon EOS 5D Mark III is a thoroughly accomplished all-rounder, capturing every nuance, colour and detail thanks to a new sensor capable of impressive clarity. Nanna says: "A fast full-frame camera that works well in low light."

Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM

Setting new standards in photographic performance, this RF lens delivers supreme sharpness and a low-light performance that's simply remarkable. Moscow Travel Guide

Despite the Soviet past, today’s Moscow is a dynamic, cutting-edge city – and the most populous in Europe. Well-heeled Muscovites flaunt their wealth by sipping Champagne with sushi at elite restaurants and shopping for designer labels at frighteningly expensive boutiques. Meanwhile, a growing middle-class has seen a proliferation of hip bars and trendy cultural centres.

While the Russian capital has striven to move on, recent tensions with the West have stirred up memories of the past. Moscow has previously led the way with protests against Vladimir Putin, but even with the tumbling ruble and economic sanctions, his popularity remains strong.

This doesn’t make Russia a no-go area, and Moscow – with its cosmopolitan, globe-trotting denizens – is not the formidable crucible often depicted. In summer, temperatures soar and the city’s vast parklands flourish. The historic Gorky Park received a complete makeover in 2012, installing free Wi-Fi and even a beach, while the Soviet behemoth that was the Rossiya Hotel has been demolished to make way for an ambitious central park.

Before that project comes to fruition, there is Red Square to marvel at, not least the mind-boggling St Basil’s Cathedral. Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, its multi-coloured domes and acid-trip patterns seem to defy logic. Nearby is the 14th-century Kremlin and seat of the tsars.

Indeed architecture is one of the city’s main attractions, especially for aficionados of Soviet buildings. All too many have been destroyed to make way for gleaming 21st-century skyscrapers, but Stalin’s unmistakable Seven Sisters still stand tall against the modern towers.

The city is naturally keen to celebrate its great writers, composers and artists too. This sophisticated city boasts world-class institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.

As for nightlife, the city is becoming increasingly hedonistic – whether jazz, rock or vodka is your thing, there are plenty of options. Even the culinary circuit has come on leaps and bounds, though an evening at one of the city’s growing stable of world-class restaurants requires considerable investment. This is, after all, a capital of oligarchs.

Top 5: Destinations fit for spies

Book Accommodation

Featured hotels, izmailovo (gamma-delta).

Constructed to accommodate visitors to the 1980 Olympics, the concrete towers of the Izmailovo boast a staggering 8,000 rooms. Institutional in atmosphere, and located far out in the northern suburbs, the hotel is handy for the enormous Izmaylovo Market and has decent city centre links. There are several onsite restaurants and in-room Wi-Fi is available too.

Peking Hotel

Built in 1956 as a little sister to Stalin's Seven Sister skyscrapers, and intended as post-war headquarters for the secret police, Moscow's Peking Hotel is a heritage hotel with a small 'h', in a good location just northwest of the centre. Although slightly old-fashioned, its 130 rooms are comfortable enough, with satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms.

Warsaw Hotel

Although its location may not be one of Moscow's most picturesque, the Warsaw Hotel is convenient for Gorky Park. Considering the quality of the competition, this is one of the best cheap options in the city, with clean and comfortable rooms, albeit in a rather dated style. Wi-Fi is complimentary and the Oktyabrskaya Metro station is right next door.

Golden Apple

A boutique hotel on a refreshingly human scale, the Golden Apple offers imaginative styling and a personal touch that many 5-star hotels lack. Behind the baroque facade, its minimalist rooms are cosy, and there's an onsite restaurant and an open-plan bar too. Staff speak excellent English and there's Wi-Fi access, a gym and a sauna.

Historical Hotel Sovietsky

In the 1950s, Joseph Stalin decreed that the famous Yar restaurant should be upgraded to a hotel and the Historical Hotel Sovietsky was born. It quickly became a showcase for the image of sophistication that the Soviet government wished to present to the world, and its 107 rooms still conjures up the nostalgia of this period in history.

Hotel Danilovsky

It's hard to imagine a more atmospheric place to stay than the 12-century precincts of the historic Danilovsky Monastery. Set amidst chapels and gardens, the hotel is a modern construction, but the rooms are comfortable and all have a view of the stately monastery buildings. There's a sauna and bar onsite too.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
