Why my kids LOVE the Museum of Natural Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point
Utah County / January 10, 2017 by Allison / 2 Comments This article may contain sponsored content or affiliate links.
We were excited for the opportunity to return to the Museum of Natural Curiosity during Christmas break. My sister was in town with her four children and THIS was one of the activities they specifically requested. We arrived right at opening time with six kids, ages 7 to 15.
The Museum of Natural Curiosity is fun when we go on our own, but it's SO MUCH BETTER with cousins!
I recommend the Museum of Natural Curiosity for families with children under the age of 12. However, there are plenty of activities that teens and adults can enjoy. My 15-year-old nephew says that the Museum of Natural Curiosity is not as fun for him as it was a few years ago, but he still had a good time.
The Museum of Natural Curiosity has five main exhibit areas and a ropes course in the rafters. Here's what you need to know to plan your visit.
The Rainforest is my kids' favorite exhibit. Rope bridges, an airplane, obstacle course, twisty slide and a tower of trampoline nets allow families to climb from the floor to the rafters. My kids always end up back here after exploring other parts of the museum.
Another favorite of the Rainforest include a tunnel so dark, you can only find your way through by touch. You can also learn about animals and nature in lots of fun ways. Got a special treasure like a sea shell or pine cone? Bring it to trade at the Trading Post!
Water Works
Families may have so much fun in Water Works, they won't notice how much they're learning about the science of water, wind, sun and earth. One of my favorite features in this area is the baby table. Special seats make it fun for the museum's youngest visitors to learn through water play.
The museum provides smocks to help keep families from getting soaked, but you may want to bring a change of clothes, just in case. There is a wind chamber, which can help dry you off too.
Kidopolis is a miniature city where kids are in charge of everything. Explore shops and secret passageways to find new hands-on activities around every corner. There are so many fun things to learn and do here. The older kids really liked the room where they composed live music with computers and drums.
Discovery Garden
Discovery Garden is an outdoor playground and garden. It was pretty quiet on the December day we visited, but I bet the simple machines at Archimedes Playground and the garden paths are hopping when the weather is warmer.
Traveling Exhibits
The Museum of Natural Curiosity has a gallery with rotating exhibits. Like the rest of the museum, you can expect these to be interactive and educational. On our last visit, it was Geometry Playground. The older kids seemed to enjoy this one most, but there was an actual geometry playground for younger children.
Canopy Tour
The Canopy Tour is a ropes course located in the rafters, high above the Rainforest. It is not included in museum admission, but can be added to your admission or paid for as a stand-alone activity. Closed toe shoes are required. Be sure to reserve your entry time when you purchase admission.
Children as young as four years old can participate in the Canopy Tour. It's a great “first” ropes course for adventurous kids.
My 12-year-old daughter and I tried the Canopy Tour. We had about 45 minutes on the course. We did every part of it at least twice in that time, and chose to exit a few minutes before our time was up. I liked the Canopy Tour because the height and elements were just the right level of challenge for me. The features are sturdy with plenty of hand holds.

What’s the youngest age you’d say that would be able to enjoy this?
July 30, 2017 at 3:02 pm
There is at least one small play zone reserved for toddlers in the Rain Forest. The water play area has seats on a water table built especially for babies and toddlers. I think that a child 6-12 months old could enjoy these areas and some other parts of the museum with your help. The outdoor playground has some nice stroller paths.

This place is awesome, truly a wonder for kids of pretty much all ages to explore. It's huge, with several different large areas ranging from my favorite , the giant jungle gym, to a water play area, and more. This last time I went, I was very excited to check out the paper rocket launching area again, but was disappointed to find out I have a 2 year old, and he was plenty old enough to enjoy most of the museum. We also ate at the cafe, and were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. It was reasonably priced and all very good. However there are 3 reasons I only give 3 stars. 1. The price is outrageous. It's $24 per adult, $19 for a youth, and $17 for a child. This means for a typical 4 member family, you're looking at spending $80+. As cool as the museum is, it's simply not worth coming more than once a year at this price. So many families who could enjoy this are simply priced out. 2. Most of the time (at least when I've gone), it's packed like a can of sardines. This makes bringing a younger child, like a 2 year old difficult. Because all of the activities are constantly swarmed by older kids. In some areas, it's hard to even just get through the walkways there are so many people. They have tried to combat this, by creating a few areas specifically made for younger kids, so that is nice at least. This would likely difficult to implement, but it seems there should be some sort of max capacity that's optimized for kids to get the most out of the museum. 3. The girl that took our order at the cafe was EXTREMELY rude. We simply asked her how big the chicken fingers are to get a gauge how much food would come with this "kids" meal. And she acted like we asked the most difficult question in the world and got so defensive and treated us poorly for some reason. Almost like the chicken finger size is a trade secret that she is sworn to protect.

I've been bringing my kids for years to this museum and it is our favorite place to be. We love all the interactive and educational areas. This place is great. If you want to have something to do all day, you will not be tired or bored. Great for homeschooling families for a nice day out I'm not sure who has more fun me or the kids.

Excellent indoor/outdoor activities. Lots to see and do, more than you can possibly see in a few hours.
Riding the Carousel.
Look at the mirror.
The place was incredibly dirty, run down and overly crowded. The car exhibit was broken, run down and my kid was disappointed as they love cars. There should be a limit on how many guests can purchase a ticket per day especially on the weekends. There were no staff walking around to ensure kids aren't getting out of hand and parents were zoned out on their phones instead of watching their kids. The areas are "all ages" which isn't safe for toddlers when 10-11 year olds are sword fighting with pool noodles and parents don't care. The cherry on top of the experience was an rude dad yelling at me for my toddler trying to put water in there kids bucket.... These are kids for god sake, let them be kids. Again security in areas making sure incidents don't happen.
The tickets are pricey ($90 for 4) but the museum looks like a bunch of eighth graders got together to paint scenes for their class play. Many of the exhibitions were boring and very small and had almost nothing to do for kids. But the worst of it was that there were no working elevators. I asked staff about this & got a shoulder shrug and I'm sorry. I'm 68 yo and have bursitis. I was able to climb the staircases a couple of times and then I had to wait in the car for my family as I was in a lot of pain. What would they have done if someone showed up in a wheelchair. I believe it's against the law -- the Disability Act -- to not have accessibility for disabled folks. I may make a complaint. UPDATE: Mgm called me, apologized, refunded tickets and are sending 4 tickets our way. Still stand by my comments about the museum in general.
I went with my 7-year-old and her school's entire 2nd grade on a field trip to the Museum of Curiosity. The hour long bus ride was very loud because the kids were so excited. When the bus dropped us off at the front, we walked through some tiny doors to get inside (I could have used the normal sized door, but that wouldn't have been as fun). There were so many different areas to explore! We barely visited them all within the hour. We could have easily spent more time here. Even as a boring old adult, I had a lot of fun! We started in the rain forest area where the kids did a lot of climbing and then screamed in fear as they slid down an awesome slide. Apparently it has two fun surprise drops :) I wish I had gone down it (I didn't know adults could). After wrangling my group of kids, we headed to a different area where they could build with huge Legos, become a veterinarian, be on tv, do magic with optical illusions, put on a play on a small stage, play music, and exercise. We headed to a different area where they learned about the weather and played with some water (without getting soaked). I now know what it feels like to have 85mph winds blowing down on the top of my head. It makes for a great hair day :) Be sure to hang on to your hats! We only had a few minutes left, so we ran outside to explore. There was a fun playground, but around the corner was a cave with a waterfall. There were some ponds with koi fish that the kids loved. We ran out of time to do everything we wanted to do. My daughter has been asking to go back and the older kids wants to join her. We might plan a family trip out here. It was a blast!
A floating head?!?
Getting her music on. Play that music DJ!
This is truly the children's museum of children's museums! It is fun for all ages and has so many activities that kids love coming back again and again. We are on our second annual pass here (and we came a LOT while we were renovating our house and had nowhere to go during the day) and my boys (ages 4 and 2) still love coming here so much. There is also a high ropes course that my older nephews love doing and the outside area is also fun for warm days. During busy hours there are extra activities the workers run, such as play dough stations or Lego activities, so there is always something for everyone. The rotating exhibit is also a fun little change every couple months. If you have kids and live here--get a pass! If you have kids and are visiting--this is a great activity that you can spend hours at! Plus you can get a stamp to come back during the day if you need to leave for lunch or naps. This is a true gem of a place!
Yikes! For the prices they charge, I would hope they would invest it into the exhibits. Everything was visibly dirty. The puppets, vet animals and pretty much everything else was beyond dingy, matted and disgusting. The worst part was the front desk staff - sorry to say. They didn't seem to know what the different offerings were. When I saw a door about canopy tours when I first walked in I inquired about it. They were quick to measure my son and have me fill out forms. And THEN, after filling everything out was I told it was an extra charge. Because I had done the leg work and my son was excited, they got an extra $20 from me. I should also point out, nobody explained what the canopy tour was. I thought it was the ropes I saw kids climbing on - turns out that's the playground and the canopy course was really high in the sky and something far out of my son's ability. They also didn't tell me when they charged my card for $20 that it was non refundable or transferable. Well, once I realized that the playground was the playground and the canopy course was what it was, I went to the front desk and asked if I could return my tickets. They were happy to tell me that I couldn't for the reasons I mentioned above. Management - please train your staff better. They should be explaining and ensuring that parents know what they are getting into - AND that things cost extra money before we fill out forms. And absolutely ensure parents BEFORE they pay that it's not refundable. This place felt like a money grab, and I can't justify returning after my first visit.

Hi Sophia! I'm so sorry about this experience and the communication issues. I've passed this message along to our staff to help us in the future. We really appreciate you taking the time to share so that we can continue to improve - and we hope we could give you a better experience in the future.
Got Super Tuesday tickets for 11:30 am, it was pretty busy but they have a cap on how many tickets are sold so it limits the amount of people. I took my kids on the outdoor playground, cave and pond first. They use to have fish food you could buy but all of the food dispensers were empty. You could still see all the fish through the windows so the kids enjoyed it. We went back inside and played in the water world which is a fun selection with building activities for all ages. We then went through the little town part on the east side. My kids love the laundry mat and lego building shop. To finish off the day we went downstairs so my toddler could play in the jungle gym part and play with the blocks downstairs.

This place is more playground than educational museum. Yes, exploration is part of learning and development, but it was very shy on the informational side. Granted, I've taken my kids to the phenomenonal Pacific Science Center in Seattle and Portland's OMSI center, both of which are packed with really fun science related experiences. Because of that disappointment, the steep admission prices and the horrible crowds (even first thing on a random Monday morning in March) we probably won't return for years. Among other things, they have... A jungle where you can squeeze a pillar to see how much force you can apply (like a snake). You can weigh yourself in terms of grasshoppers and hippos. Walking on rope ladders and climbing into a little plane is fun, although the crowds suck much of the pleasure out. The little village is also fun to explore. The music studio area was our favorite, where you can playban air harp, and a huge drum set, among other things. The little kids enjoyed the vet office, where they x-ray stuffies and "work on them" on the exam table. The giant Legos were fun, but there weren't nearly enough bricks in the room for all the kids. The water splash area was very loud but the littles liked it.

Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point
Imagine a water fountain of Italian stone basins cascading down a hillside. Envision yourself standing inside a Monet painting or discovering the hidden entrance to a secret garden. It may be difficult to imagine visiting these sensational scenes in Utah, but the Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point delivers all of these experiences and more.
Ashton Gardens’ lush, manicured landscape sits inside Lehi’s arid, desert basin about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. This oasis is a 50-acre museum of trees, blooms, hardscapes, water features and sculptures. It even boasts the largest man-made waterfall in the Western Hemisphere. Meandering pathways invite guests to stroll (or rent a golf cart, wheelchair or electric scooter) for a half-day exploration of the 15 gardens or a 30-minute meditation.

Garden Highlights
Fragrance garden.
Sweet smells permeate throughout the entire garden, but the Fragrance Garden is where it all lets loose. Raised beds of fennel, rosemary, dill and lavender bring the scents closer to the nose, but this isn’t your average herb garden. Also on display are fragrant rhubarb, lemon verbena, Cardinal basil, Scarlet Runner bean, Malabar spinach and Cuban oregano.
Gardening Classes and Events
Locals know the gardens for the famed Tulip Festival, but beyond that attraction, Ashton Gardens offers visitors a variety of educational and community events. Among their programs are movies and concerts in their outdoor amphitheater, a Secret Garden book club, rotating national garden exhibits, veggie garden classes, self-guided tours and Dog Walk Wednesdays.
Much like French Impressionist Claude Monet’s famous series of paintings, Monet Lake features water lilies, marshes, trees, bridges and koi fish. To the east, the view of Mount Timpanogos is less about Europe and more about Japan, a perspective reflecting the Japanese expression of shakkei for “borrowed landscape.” This technique incorporates a distant landscape into a garden design.
Parterre Garden
The Parterre Garden centers around an almost-life-size carousel structure holding topiaries of circus animals. The merry-go-round art marries formal garden beds — representing the four seasons — each built symmetrically around this garden’s centerpiece. Parterre comes from the French word ‘on the ground,’ which describes a formal garden on level ground made up of enclosed flower beds typically in symmetrical patterns.
Rose Garden
Is a garden truly a garden if it doesn’t have roses? This garden features the classic bloom in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Collections include favorites such as the coveted David Austin and Downton Abbey roses. Tea, shrub, garden, climbing and sprays grow happily inside a rotunda framed partially by a pergola, built with 20,000 pieces of timber.
Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is a shady nest tucked into the sprawling landscape. Based on the classic book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the English garden showcases a honeysuckle-covered tunnel, arched wooden gates, worn brick walls and a small fountain. Carved benches provide resting spots below a towering canopy of Dinosaur, Ginko and Dawn Redwood trees.
Waterwise Garden
The Waterwise Garden educates visitors on Utah’s drought-tolerant native plants, such as penstemon, Mojave sage, allium and salvia. Signs educate visitors on how often and how much to water their Utah gardens. Here’s one important tip: Utahns should water every three days for 40 minutes, instead of every day for 20 minutes, to encourage roots to grow deeper and stronger.

When to Visit
Ashton Gardens opens for the season on the last weekend in March and closes for winter after the third weekend in October. The gardens open briefly in December for their Luminaria light tour. These grounds are equally spectacular each season and worth more than one visit to see how the landscape alters with fluctuating temperatures, sunlight and precipitation.
Plant Diversity and Responsible Visitation
The Ashton Gardens’ team welcomes visitors and volunteers interested in plant diversity, garden experimentation, respecting the ecosystem and responsible visitation. Simple rules include: Enjoy the garden from the pathways. Don’t pick flowers. Please respect all plants and animals of Ashton Gardens.

Thanksgiving Point: Everything You Need to Know

- Updated March 9, 2024
We live in Lehi and are so lucky to be close to Thanksgiving Point. We have had a membership pass to Thanksgiving Point most of the years that we have lived here because there is so much to do. It is an amazing place for families to visit.
Since there is a lot to do, we want to help you understand a little bit more about Thanksgiving Point. First of all, there are 5 venues and 2 restaurants, plus some other spots to enjoy located on their large campus. This post will give you a rundown of everything at Thanksgiving Point. In addition, there are seasonal events like Luminaria and the Tulip Festival that we do year after year.
Museum of Ancient Life
This spot is for all of the dinosaur lovers out there. This museum is full of fossils and dinosaur displays, but we really love that every room has hands-on activities. Our favorites are the huge sand and water table, and the sand pit to brush of fossils, and there are even a few just for toddlers. They are adding a new indoor playground soon, and we can’t wait.
Butterfly Biosphere
Near the Museum of Ancient Life is the Butterfly Biosphere. This spot is great for learning about insects, especially butterflies. There is a large indoor play area, and hands-on exhibits. But the biosphere is a special place where you walk among the butterflies. They flutter around you, and often land right on you. It is amazing!
Farm Country
We love walking around the farm at Thanksgiving Point. There are many farm animals to feed and pet. You can also enjoy a pony ride or wagon ride. The farm has different exhibits about how farms work, but the highlight is seeing all of the animals up close. They are in the process of adding a new train ride at Farm Country, too.
Museum of Natural Curiosity
The Museum of Natural Curiosity is built just for kids. Our boys love this museum because it is all hands-on activities. There is an entire Kids Town with places like the bank, laundromat, vets office, and more for kids to play pretend. There is a huge water works area to have fun with water, and our boys love The Jungle area, which is a huge indoor climbing place.
Ashton Gardens
You really need to visit the Ashton Gardens during the Tulip Festival , as well as during Luminaria , but the gardens are beautiful any time of year. There are many different paths to wander and a huge variety of plants and trees. Don’t miss feeding the koi at the pond, or exploring the secret garden. They have fun events throughout the year, too.
Restaurants
There are two main restaurants at Thanksgiving Point. Harvest is located between the Museum of Ancient Life and the Butterfly Biosphere. It is a great spot for a date or friend outing because it is a little bit on the fancy side. The Trellis Cafe is located at Ashton Gardens and is open seasonally. This is a lovely spot for a lunch date. There is also the Tower Deli which is a quick service spot and has an ice cream shop next door.
The Carousel
The carousel is a new addition to Thanksgiving Point that we haven’t even visited yet. It is not included in our membership pass, so we will have to purchase separate tickets. But the carousel has hand painted horses and old fashioned music, and the tickets are between $3-$5, so not too bad.
Explorer Pass
If you are visiting for the day and want to save a little bit, then we recommend the Explorer Pass. This pass allows you to visit any of the Venues. You probably wouldn’t have time to hit them all, but it is cheaper to buy the explorer pass if you are going to go to more than one spot. You can read more about it on the Thanksgiving Point website .
If you live in the area and you are considering checking out any of these spots, you might consider getting a membership. If we visit one location, it is usually over $100 for our family since our kids are getting older. We got our membership for $250 (on sale), so if we plan to visit at least three times, it is worth it. When our kids were young, we would visit the farm or dinosaur museum almost every week. We don’t go quite as often now, but we still go enough that we keep our membership. It would be a great gift to enjoy as a family.
We really enjoy Thanksgiving Point and love to visit any of these locations. Please let us know if you have any other questions by sending us an email at [email protected].

Museum of Natural Curiosity to open at Thanksgiving Point

LEHI — The Museum of Natural Curiosity at Thanksgiving Point will soon be Utah's newest museum for families. The museum will be home to more than 400 hands-on and interactive exhibits that teach principles of science, art, history and culture that will likely be a lot of fun for families as well.
"The Museum of Natural Curiosity will become our fourth main venue in addition to the Museum of Ancient Life, Farm Country, and Thanksgiving Point Gardens," said Britnee Johnston, Communications Manager at Thanksgiving Point. "We've been planning for the new museum for more than seven years so it's great to see it become a reality this year."
The new museum will feature five main exhibit areas: Rainforest, Water Works, Kidopolis, Discovery Garden and Traveling Exhibits.
Rainforest will be a giant playground with an obstacle course, airplane, rope bridges, a tower of trampoline nets and a 45-foot tall monkey head. It will also feature a number of scientific, sensory and cultural exhibits. There will be a "rainforest canopy tour" in the rafters of the building, which visitors may experience as an add-on.
Water Works will encourage water play while teaching about the science of water, wind, sun and earth in an environment reminiscent of Utah's red rocks. Waterproof outerwear and wind exhibits will allow families to splash all they want, but stay dry enough to enjoy the rest of the museum.
Kidopolis will be a child-size city where families can explore new interests around every corner. Make bubbles at the Laundromat, build something at the Tinkering Shop or perform a play at the Theater. Kidopolis will feature a key tree where visitors can donate unused keys to a growing community art project.
Discovery Garden will incorporate Thanksgiving Point's existing Children's Garden and add some new outdoor exhibits. Nature, simple machines and the Archimedes playground will be new outdoor attractions.
Traveling exhibits will be provided by San Francisco's Exploratorium, with whom the Museum of Natural Curiosity has a multi-year agreement. These exhibits will teach about the world through science, art and human perception.
What do kids think of the new museum? Madeline and Andrew Laypath recently visited the Museum of Natural Curiosity for a test event.
"I love the trampoline net. I could live there," said 9-year-old Madeline.
"I like the Touch Tunnel because it is dark and you get to feel your way through," said 7-year-old Andrew.
The Museum of Natural Curiosity will open to the public on May 15, 2014. Admission will be $15/adult and $12/child (3-12 years) and $12/senior. Annual memberships to Thanksgiving Point will include the Museum of Natural Curiosity. Prices for several membership categories will go up on May 15, 2014. Family memberships are currently priced at $175 per year. That price will go up to $195 on May 15, 2014.
"There's nothing like the Museum of Natural Curiosity here in Utah," Johnston said. "The new Museum of Natural Curiosity supports our mission of providing transformative learning experiences. It's great that we are able to provide a new attraction at Thanksgiving Point with state-of-the-art exhibits that the community can enjoy during their visit."
