Carla Morrison has built up a reputation as a recognisable Mexican pop singer, with two Latin Grammy Awards under her belt just for her album “Dejenme Llorar” which has achieved Gold Certification in Mexico.
It was in 2009 that Morrison released her debut EP, “Aprendiendo a Aprender”. It was an independent project that found it’s way into the right hands in the media, catapulting her status exponentially. She fortunately found herself releasing the singles “Esta Soledad” and “Lagrimas” which both found their way onto the soundtrack of the television show, entitled “Soy tu Fan”.
In 2010, she released her sophomore EP, “Mientras Tu Dormias”. Again, it built Morrison’s success further, with her touring around Mexico in some of the major cities. She also toured in the USA and Colombia. The EP was fortunately nominated for a Latin Grammy Award, and around this time, she managed to sell out the majority of her shows.
With two EP’s done and dusted, it was time to work on a full-length studio album. The album “Dejenme Llorar” which was later released on March 24th 2012 gained much critical acclaim and was nominated for five awards at the Latin Grammy Awards. The two that it won were for “Best Alternative Album” and “Best alternative Song”. Following this success, she embarked on an international tour that took Morrison to Europe, to South America and North America. She also played at Festivals including the Vive Latino Festival, where she performed at first in 2011 to nine thousand people, and then in 2012, she performed to thirty thousand people, in 2013 she performed to an estimated 65 thousand people.
In 2013, she released a brand new single entitled “Disfruto”.
Live reviews
Carla Morrison stands on the stage, lit up by the orange light filtering across it, and strums her acoustic guitar. Her fingers expertly pick out the chords, releasing a haunting, melancholy tune which she accompanies with her emotive voice as she sings “Disfruto”. While she plays, the audience is respectfully silent, enjoying her voice. As soon as she finishes, however, they burst into applause, cheering loudly, and she smiles. Carla Patricia Morrison Flores, from Baja California, is a Mexican singer/songwriter. She had an artistic childhood, and was encouraged to dance, draw, and sing from a young age. She began to formally study music as the age of seventeen. She dropped out of music school soon after to follow her own, more spiritual approach to music. Originally, she played her compositions under the name 'Babaluca', and that became the name of her first band. Later, she started doing solo work and released her first EP, Aprendiendo A Aprender, in 2009. She followed it with three other albums between 2010 and 2012. She has also released multiple singles, including “Esta Soledad”, “Yo Sigo Aqui”, “Hasta La Piel”, and “Dejenme Llorar”. Her music is emotional, clever, and well done, and if you have not seen her live, I would recommend it. She always puts on a great show.

CARLA MORRISON
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Carla Morrison is coming back to music brand new. These past few years, she’s intentionally centered herself—learning who she’s been and who she wants to be, and culling empowerment from both. This choice was critical; patiently refocusing may have saved her life.
Raw retellings of emotional, personal heartbreaks are the bedrock of Morrison’s material, and this honest approach earned her multiple Grammy noms and Latin Grammy wins over the course of five albums. Snowballing from her 2010 debut Mientras Tú Dormías, onto 2012’s Déjenme Llorar and the 2016 release of Amor Supremo, her success grew rapidly. Taking the outdoor stage at Coachella, sharing a bill with rock giants Enjambre at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes and filling to capacity as headliner the city’s famed Auditorio Nacional, opening for tours in Spain, Latin America, and a sold-out stretch of U.S. shows followed.
“It’s just kind of the Latino way,” the Tecate, Baja California-born musician says. “You always feel so grateful, and you always feel so guilty. You don't feel like you're entitled to rest.”
Today, she’s still making music on her own terms—only now, those terms have changed.
In 2017, there came a point when an inner voice of fear was all Morrison could hear. An amalgam of persistent opinions and criticism from both the industry and listeners, her own gut feelings—those internal nudges toward one direction or another, the inner validation that you’re doing the right thing—had been silenced altogether.
“For the longest time, I questioned the purpose of my existence, when I was in the middle of my success,” she says. “I would find myself thinking very often that I wanted to die. Being a highly sensitive person, it was just a lot. It felt overwhelming.”
Addressing her collapsing mental and emotional state was a life-or-death matter. She needed a chance to find herself again, and so she intentionally paused everything— social media, music-making, touring.
Now stronger than ever, Morrison is following fresh ambitions with confidence. Her new songs reflect the labor of a self-discovery journey; in them she shares its fruits too, so that anyone who hears her messages might also find their own route to happiness.
In 2018, Morrison considered how a change of scenery might shift her outlook. A wholly unfamiliar place would demand growth, right? Morrison went big on this hope—she relocated to Paris.
“I was living to everybody's expectations, but not mine,” she recalls. “I didn’t even have a personal life. I didn't even have hobbies. My hobbies were music, and then that safe place eventually wasn't safe anymore.”
To say the City of Lights illuminated the path to a rebirth isn’t quite accurate, though, because it was Morrison herself who put in the work necessary to grow. Could it have been any city? Maybe. What’s most important is that the time and space apart from her home country afforded her room to think and to grow.
The early days of studying French helped: “You can’t really have a conversation. So I was in silence a lot, and I heard a lot of my thoughts. A lot was coming to mind.” Taking jazz singing classes at a music conservatory was a jolt of humility she didn’t know she needed; the improvisation techniques she mastered became central in shaping vocals for her new material.
In this period of taking personal inventory, she gained strength in her own self-image, and finally came to believe that she is beautiful. Exploring the museums of Paris led to a study of Renaissance era paintings; in Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, she saw herself.
“That's when everything hit me,” she says. “That's what I'm becoming now: a more mature, intelligent woman, that knows she can fail, but is also beautiful, and can be herself.”
Before this journey, Morrison worried she couldn’t explore new sounds or styles. The inner fear persisted. With a laugh, she remembers thinking: “If I get too Dora la Exploradora, I’m going to get in trouble.”
Collaborating over the years with other artists, from Lila Downs to Calexico and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Morrison has ventured out stylistically before, but she’s not strayed too far from those perpetually looming expectations. An invite from Colombian reggaetonero J Balvin—gifting his 2018 album Vibras with an ethereal intro—was another important step toward more open exploration.
But it’s really the perspective earned in the space she cleared for herself—this concerted effort to reflect and heal—that’s emboldened her instincts. Rather than cater to anyone else’s expectations, she’s now creating music to meet her own. What Carla Morrison wants today is to be happy, and for her listeners to find happiness for themselves, too.
Welcoming a long-standing love of R&B and pop into the mix—styles she used to shut out for fear of alienating fans—was a boon to the process. “I wanted to put more rhythm, more sassiness, in the music,” she says, adding that a universal appeal was also a goal.
With her newfound sharpness of self comes an acceptance that perfection isn’t possible, but unabashedly being yourself is the closest thing to it. Standing in that knowledge, nobody can shake Carla Morrison’s self-confidence now.
Unexpected opportunities have since rolled in, like pairing with Ricky Martin on “Recuerdo” for his recent Pausa EP. And surprisingly, “Disfruto,” from her 2012 album, was remixed into a club hit, and remains a favorite of EDM DJs throughout Latin America and Europe, Paris included, and it’s gained plenty traction in Mexico, too.
While retaining the intimacy and reflection she’s always expressed, there’s a welcome undercurrent of joy to the music she’s making now. It’s a new era for Carla Morrison, and she’s strutting confidently into it, head held high. The sound is new, because so is she.
“I feel like I finally learned who I was, and that's one of the things that helps you navigate life in a better way,” she says. “That was my rebirth—for my mind and my soul.”
“I now know better who I am,” she says. “Knowing yourself gives you the tools to navigate life. It’s not just a moment but a constant reminder that happiness is not a place you arrive at, but a journey—a learning experience.”

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an El Tiny takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.
The magic of Carla Morrison 's music is in the intimacy of her lyrics and her voice. I've seen the Mexican singer-songwriter woo small audiences and large crowds with an elegance that's only grown since her first releases. That power to mesmerize is on full display during her time behind the desk with four songs that draw on the things that have earned Morrison stans all over Latin America.

After the opening piano strains of "Contigo," we're treated to a display of how Morrison's lyrics can sometimes move the singer herself as she confesses to shedding a few tears during the chorus.
There is an underlying sense of purpose and release in this music as she explains why she took a break from her music career and how that influences the passion behind her latest album, El Renacimiento.
In fact, even as she introduces "Encontrarme" as an ode to self discovery and recovery, Morrison displays where the emotion in her lyrics come from as she tears up explaining the origin of the song.
"I'm so emotional," she says through tears, "because it's been a long time since I've been touring and I took a really long time to come back to myself and to be able to sing again. Just to be here means a lot to me because I do watch NPR Tiny Desk at home!"
As if it couldn't get any more emotional, Morrison introduces "Te Regalo" by introducing the object of her melodic affections, her husband and co-producer, Alejandro Jiménez.
I'm not saying you should have a box of tissues nearby while you watch Carla Morrison's performance, but it came in handy for me.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter returns with a new sound and heartfelt message.
About this Performance
Grammy-nominated and three-time Latin Grammy-winning artist Carla Morrison has had an explosive year following the release of her highly anticipated album El Renacimiento . While her style is still rooted in her beloved acoustic-heavy sound, she showcases her ability to effortlessly venture into a larger pop realm with versatility and depth.
Over the course of ten studio albums, singer and songwriter Devendra Banhart has forged an idiosyncratic—but instantly recognizable—sound that seems to have been informed by nearly every kind of music being made just outside of the mainstream. Psychedelic folk, chamber pop, tropicália, merengue—they all come together through their guitar.

Mexican Pop Trio Belanova Will Reunite for First U.S. Tour in Six Years
By Tomás Mier
Belanova vocalist Denisse Guerrero vividly remembers how she felt after she performed “Rosa Pastel” with Carla Morrison in Mexico City last November. It was her first time onstage in years, and she wasn’t sure if she’d ever return to performing full-time again.
“I got offstage and it was cathartic,” Guerrero says. “It felt so good both biologically and in my soul. [Singing] es lo mío [is my thing] and making music helps you heal.”
Six years after the era-defining pop trio’s last tour, Belanova are back. Rolling Stone can exclusively announce that the group will return to the U.S. on its 12-date Vida en Rosa Tour this spring.
“I’ve wanted to focus on the gratitude I have for our audience,” Guerrero says. “As an artist, you do what’s in your nature to center yourself and write a song, but you sometimes wonder if no one will be interested. The fact that people lend us their ears is incredible.”
The tour arrives as a new generation of Latin pop listeners has discovered the group’s music — sugary, synth-pop songs such as “Cada Que,” “Por Ti,” “Niño,” and “Me Pregunto” — on TikTok, while an older generation of Belanova fans has reconnected with the band’s lyricism and nostalgia. (Newer Mexican pop stars, including Danna Paola, have also cited the Belanova’s unique, bubbly sound as inspiration.)
“I recently saw that my little neighbors were having a party, and they were singing ‘Rosa Pastel’ a todo pulmón. It was so cool to see,” says Huerta.
Editor’s picks
Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.
Guerrero is honest, though: She wasn’t sure if she was ready to come back to the group. “But I owe it to the public,” she says. “I was having existential crises, and at many moments, I thought, ‘What if I had a different career or job?’ But I realized that [performing] is even good for my health.”
Guerrero says she’s looking forward to seeing the response to the tour during a time when Latin music has taken over global stages. She points to the success of Peso Pluma and Karol G. ( Both won Grammys on Sunday.) “Before, we would rarely be recognized,” she says. Guerrero also says she’s a “big fan” of Kali Uchis and begged a friend to bring her a vinyl pressing of Uchis’ Orquídeas from the U.S. “I love what she’s doing,” she says.
On the new tour, the group will perform songs from their stacked discography — their seventh and last album, Viaje al Centro del Corazón , arrived in 2018. Belanova also does not plan to return to the studio or release new music anytime soon. (“Personally as an artist and human, I’m barely landing,” Guerrero says.)
“It’s like coming back from summer vacation,” adds Huerta. “There are some nerves about being back onstage.”

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Carla Morrison has come back to music brand new.
Snowballing from her 2010 debut Mientras T Dorm as, onto 2012’s D jenme Llorar and the 2016 release of Amor Supremo, her success grew rapidly.
You don’t feel like you’re entitled to rest.”
“I was living to everybody’s expectations, but not mine,” she recalls. “I didn’t even have a personal life. I didn’t even have hobbies. My hobbies were music, and then that safe place eventually wasn’t safe anymore.”
“That’s when everything hit me,” she says. “That’s what I’m becoming now: a more mature, intelligent woman, that knows she can fail, but is also beautiful, and can be herself.”
“I feel like I finally learned who I was, and that’s one of the things that helps you navigate life in a better way,” she says. “That was my rebirth—for my mind and my soul.”
“I now know better who I am,” she says. “Knowing yourself gives you the tools to navigate life. It’s not just a moment but a constant reminder that happiness is not a place you arrive at, but a journey—a learning experience.”
In 2020, Carla made her explosive return to the spotlight with her powerful track “Ansiedad,” which captured the fragile state of being of the world during a global pandemic. The track received large acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, MTV, CNN and others. She made her first public appearance on one of the world’s biggest stages at the Latin Grammys in November 2020 with a striking performance with Ricky Martin for his song “Recuerdo.”
Shortly after, Carla released a series of striking songs, “No Me Llames,” “Obra de Arte, and “Contigo,” that served as a precursor to her highly anticipated studio album, El Renacimiento, set for April 29 via her longtime independent label, Cosmica. The new body of work is set to solidify Carla’s rightful position as a pioneer and an ever-present force in music to this day.
