Sydney es la capital de Nueva Gales del Sur y es, además, una de las ciudades más conocidas en Australia, país en el que se encuentra. Algunos de sus edificios, como la Casa de la Ópera y su diseño que imita las velas de un barco, se han convertido en auténticos iconos de la ciudad, así como sus rascacielos, que ha sabido combinar a la perfección con los espacios naturales, tan abundantes en este mágico país.

La Gran Barrera de Coral de Australia se encuentra situada al noroeste del país, en concreto en el estado de Queensland. Por sus dimensiones, ocupa el primer lugar en todo el mundo, de ahí que sea uno de los principales atractivos de esta región. Su longitud es de aproximadamente 2.300 km de largo, dentro de los cuales conviven arrecifes de diferentes características e islas que están formadas por corales duros y blandos. Todo un espectáculo de coral que es posible visitar desde distintos puntos.

Llegada a Sidney, la ciudad más antigua de Australia. Una ciudad acogedora, entusiasta y vibrante con una bella Bahía donde destaca el Teatro de la Ópera y el Puente. Otro sitio emblemático es el Darling Harbour, zona portuaria donde se encuentra el acuario, el museo marítimo, los jardines chinos, restaurantes, etc. Alojamiento.

Un crucero por la incomparable Bahía de Sidney nos ofrecerá una perspectiva única del espectacular Teatro de la Ópera, el Puente de la Bahía y el Fuerte Denison. Almuerzo a bordo. Desayuno. Salida en vuelo a Ayers Rock donde se encuentra “Uluru”, el monolito más grande del mundo y el lugar más reverenciado por los aborígenes. Comenzaremos nuestro recorrido hasta la entrada del Parque Nacional Uluru Kata Tjuta. A partir de este punto es sólo cuestión de minutos que el espectro de Uluru surja de las dunas para demostrar su enormidad y presencia en este país. La primera nos brindará la oportunidad de tomar fotografías de este increíble ícono, el Mt. Uluru asomando frente a nosotros, caminaremos por la base, después nos dirigiremos al área de observación de Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, donde tendremos una vista del Uluru con Kata Tjuta al fondo, degustando una copa de vino espumoso y canapés.

Media pensión. Hoy disfrutaremos de un espectacular amanecer, saldremos hasta la entrada del Parque Nacional Uluru Kata Tjuta. Desde allí comienza un viaje de 40 km a través del paisaje desértico hasta la poderosa formación rocosa. Al llegar al área de observación, caminará hasta el mejor mirador para ver las 36 cúpulas que componen este lugar espiritual mientras observa el brillo del sol de la mañana mientras el desierto cobra vida. Disfrutaremos de un desayuno picnic. A medida que nos acerquemos a la entrada de Walpa Gorge (llamado así por el viento, Walpa, que silba entre las enormes cúpulas que dan forma a Kata Tjuta, resultado de la erosión), su guía le compartirá el significado de este sitio ceremonial sagrado para hombres. Daremos un paseo entre estas poderosas paredes de roca de conglomerado mientras su guía nos explicará cómo ha evolucionado el medio ambiente y la geología a lo largo de millones de años. Al finalizar el recorrido, regresará a su alojamiento. Al atardecer asistiremos a una puesta de sol inolvidable: por un lado, el sol poniéndose sobre las Olgas y en frente Uluru cambiando de color acompañado de la música del didgeridoo, todo seguido de una cena bajo las estrellas donde viajaremos a través de los Sonidos del Silencio y del Espíritu del Cielo, de la Vía Láctea y la Cruz del Sur.

Desayuno. Salida en vuelo a Cairns, limitada al este por la Gran Barrera de Coral, el Rainforest al oeste y bellas playas al sur y al norte.

Media pensión. Crucero en catamarán hasta la Gran Barrera de Coral, la más grande del mundo con 2.300 km. Este fascinante complejo de corales, Patrimonio de la Humanidad, alberga bajo aguas transparentes un mundo inimaginable de formas y colores. Durante los meses de invierno en Australia, de julio a septiembre, aconsejamos llevar ropa de abrigo a la cena bajo las estrellas en Ayers Rock. Esta cena puede cancelarse en ocasiones debido a situaciones imprevisibles, como razones meteorológicas. En este caso, a discreción de Ayers Rock Resort, se ofrecerá una cena alternativa.

Época de lluvias en P. N. Kakadu y Norte de Queensland (Cairns y Barrera de Coral): estas regiones del norte de Australia tienen un clima tropical con una estación húmeda de noviembre a marzo con precipitaciones en forma de tormentas tropicales al caer la tarde. Es temporada de medusas, más comunes cerca de las playas que alrededor de las islas o Barrera de Coral, por lo que es recomendable bañarse dentro de las redes que se instalan en las playas o con trajes especiales (disponibles sin coste adicional durante el Crucero por la Gran Barrera).

La visita medio día de la ciudad Melbourne, opera en castellano de lunes a viernes. Y la Great Ocean Road, opera en castellano, los lunes, miércoles y viernes; y requiere un mínimo de 4 pasajeros.

En cuanto al P. N. Kakadu, las visitas regulares no operan durante la estación húmeda ya que no es posible acceder a muchas zonas del parque debido a las inundaciones y el estado de las carreteras, de diciembre al 31 de enero/25.

Bañada por las aguas de los océanos Índico y Pacífico, Australia es un destino que le ofrece una extraordinaria riqueza natural y sensacionales ciudades costeras. Empezando por los parajes naturales, en su viaje a Australia tendrá la oportunidad de descubrir lugares tan interesantes y atractivos como la Gran Barrera de Coral, que abarca más de 2.000 kilómetros de costa de Queensland. Australia goza de un clima moderado. La mayoría de las zonas de este inmenso país recibe una media de 3.000 horas de sol anuales. De manera general, se puede decir que durante el invierno (junio a agosto) las temperaturas pueden bajar hasta los 13 ºC en todo el país, con días soleados y de temperaturas agradables y noches templadas en la parte norte (Darwin y Kakadu), siendo más frías y lluviosas en el sur (Sidney, Valle de Hunter y Montañas Azules). En verano, las temperaturas aumentan hasta los 29 ºC en la mayor parte del país, aunque el norte (Darwin y Kakadu) y las regiones del centro (Ayers Rock o Uluru) son muy calurosas. En la parte norte (Darwin) el clima tiende a ser más tropical, por lo que durante el verano pueden producirse tormentas esporádicas de corta duración. Conviene destacar, la diversidad climática del Parque Nacional de Kakadu, cuya temporada de lluvias transcurre desde noviembre hasta abril, mientras que la seca transcurre de mayo a octubre. Cada temporada ofrece aspectos diferentes de este maravilloso parque y ambas resultan óptimas para disfrutar la visita, aunque en la época de lluvias, las carreteras pueden sufrir inundaciones y quedar intransitables. La mejor época para visitar el país es en primavera y verano (septiembre a febrero), ya que las temperaturas se suavizan y los días son soleados. Esta época, sin embargo, registra temperaturas elevadas en la zona centro y tormentas tropicales en la parte norte. Otoño e invierno, si bien registran temperaturas menos elevadas pero tolerables, resultan temporadas muy buenas para viajar por la zona centro y norte del país.

Legislación y documentos

Es necesario poseer un pasaporte con al menos 6 meses de validez. Los requisitos de visado se pueden consultar en la embajada o consulado correspondiente. El visado se puede tramitar en Catai. Las Aduanas de Australia tienen reglamentos muy estrictos y es esencial saber lo que se puede llevar y lo que no se puede llevar a Australia. Australia tiene un estricto control de las fronteras para evitar la posible introducción de plagas y enfermedades exóticas. Como resultado de ello, los viajeros y su equipaje son inspeccionados con rayos x y por los funcionarios de aduanas (Australian Customs). Los oficiales de Aduanas y Cuarentena pueden interrogar a los viajeros en cualquier momento. Además cuentan con perros que detectan y buscan drogas y artículos vegetales y animales prohibidos en Australia. No hay que preocuparse, solo hay que seguir las instrucciones que nos dan y mostrar todos los artículos, animales y vegetales que pudiéramos llevar. Al llegar a Australia • Debe tener su pasaporte y la tarjeta de entrada al país listos (esta tarjeta nos la entregan en el avión). • Está prohibido pasar cualquier tipo de alimento. • Lo más importante es ser honesto con la Aduana. Diferencia horaria

La diferencia horaria es de GMT + 8 horas con el oeste de Australia y + 11 horas con el este de Australia. (1 más en verano).

La mayoría de la población es cristiana, que se dividen entre católicos y anglicanos. Existen minorías de musulmanes, budistas y judíos.

El idioma oficial es el inglés, que tiene algunas diferencias con el de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. Las lenguas aborígenes se han visto reducidas, de las 250 originales sólo se conservan unas 30.

Compras y artesanía

Es un país donde se puede comprar multitud de souvenirs y los encontraremos en multitud de tiendas por todo Australia. Para comprar lo más típico, recomendamos dirigirse siempre a tiendas regentadas por las tribus aborígenes. Son auténticos y están mejor hechos. Además de comprar arte auténtico, estaremos ayudando a esas comunidades. Podremos comprar boomerangs, zumbadores, didgeridoos, pinturas aborígenes, etc. La ropa no es tan barata como en Estados Unidos.

Indumentaria

Ropa cómoda, alguna prenda de abrigo para las noches en el desierto (para los viajes en invierno y otoño se recomienda llevar prendas menos ligeras para todas las visitas), sombrero o gorra para protegerse del sol durante las caminatas en los parques naturales, calzado cómodo, botas de trekking ya usadas y limpias (sin rastros de origen vegetal o animal en las suelas), chubasquero ligero o poncho impermeable, mochila pequeña, traje de baño y prendas más formales para las cenas en los restaurantes de las ciudades. Se recomienda llevar un botiquín personal según necesidades médicas de cada cliente, sin olvidar incluir tiritas, repelente anti mosquitos, suplementos de vitamina B (actúa como repelente contra los mosquitos), crema de protección solar muy alta y toallitas húmedas. Es muy importante que las botas de trekking y cualquier otro artículo de campo estén limpios de rastros vegetales. Las autoridades australianas puede confiscar e incluso destruir cualquier objeto que contenga rastros de origen vegetal y/o animal antes de entrar en el país, con el fin de evitar posibles contagios o plagas que afecten su frágil ecosistema.

Visados y Requisitos de Entrada

Arte y cultura.

Se caracteriza por tener una cultura rica tanto por su tradición aborigen como por el arte heredado de los europeos que colonizaron la isla. La visión aborigen del mundo está basada en dos “tiempos” distintos y complementarios: el tiempo cotidiano y el tiempo mágico llamado El Tiempo del Sueño o Alchera. Este Tiempo del Sueño es una dimensión poblada de espíritus ancestrales que viajando por la Tierra fueron conformándola, y transmitiendo a los seres humanos los conocimientos necesarios para su supervivencia. Una vez cumplida esta tarea los espíritus (llamados “Wondjina”) desaparecieron en el interior de la Tierra, habitando en las formas de la naturaleza: ríos, montañas, animales, plantas, etc. Al Tiempo del Sueño se puede entrar en el presente también por medio de ciertos ritos totémicos. Y esto es lo más interesante de toda visión animista: la posibilidad de crear y dar forma a la realidad en cualquier momento; base del chamanismo. El lazo de unión entre los antepasados y los aborígenes son los kobong o tótems. Cada indígena tiene su propio y personal tótem. Éstos se representan de diversas y variadas formas, generalmente con aspecto de animales. Son los que pueden curar y apartar las influencias malignas de quien lo posee. El cruce de caminos de los senderos del Tiempo del Sueño es Uluru, llamada por los blancos Ayers Rock. La montaña aislada que cambia de color según la luz, que tiene grabados en sus cuevas y grutas, imágenes divinas procedentes del Tiempo del Sueño, que para ellos es el principio de toda realidad. Con tan sólo cuatro colores básicos (ocre rojo, ocre amarillo, caolín y negro de carbón) el arte rupestre aborigen está lleno de simbolismos que se manifiestan en una extraordinaria combinación de formas, figuras y fondos. Los aborígenes normalmente suelen decorar con este tipo de arte todos los objetos de uso cotidiano como cestas, boomerangs, cuchillos, escudos, tazas, recipientes, etc. Incluso en algunas ceremonias se pintan el cuerpo y lo adornan con plumas de diferentes colores. Las pinturas aborígenes se definen como expresiones realistas. Los indígenas suelen representar en las siluetas que dibujan de los animales atributos que encuentra dentro de él.

Gastronomía

La comida australiana tiene poco de propio y mucho de fuera, al ser un país con tantos inmigrantes puedes encontrar una variedad gastronómica enorme. En todas las ciudades hay restaurantes que ofrecen comida tradicional de muchos países, entre los cuales encontramos restaurantes tailandeses, chinos, indios, japoneses, árabes, mejicanos, y de casi todas las nacionalidades. En comparación con la española, la gastronomía australiana es muy poco elaborada, a los aussies no les gusta dedicar mucho tiempo a la cocina. No obstante, aunque a simple vista parezca que Australia no tiene gastronomía propia y sea todo influencia culinaria inglesa, asiática, europea y americana, los australianos también tienen algunos platos y recetas típicos como son: Meat pie (pastel de carne): nadie puede ir a Australia y no probar el típico meat pie. Coloquialmente los australianos los llaman “dog’s eye” (ojo de perro). Los venden en cualquier panadería, supermercado e incluso tiende a ser muy popular en la madrugada después de una noche de fiesta. Canguro : muchos australianos tienen la costumbre de comer carne de canguro. Bien sea asado, a la parrilla o al horno. Se cocina poco hecho y se puede condimentar con ajo, pimienta y romero. Vinos australianos: En el selecto club de países productores de vino, Australia ha pasado en poco tiempo, de ser un perfecto desconocido, a aumentar su exportación, hasta convertirse en uno de los grandes. Las primeras cepas las introdujeron los británicos, pero las viñas no prosperaron debido al desconocimiento del terreno y a las numerosas plagas. Fue con la llegada de los primeros pobladores alemanes, a mediados del siglo XIX, cuando estas tierras fértiles comenzaron a dar buenos caldos, gracias a la experiencia de los nuevos pobladores, adquirida en las bodegas del Rin. Hubo que esperar hasta la década de los 90, con la introducción de nuevas tecnologías, para que los magníficos vinos australianos se afianzasen en el mercado, ocupando un merecido puesto que ya no han abandonado. Las principales áreas productoras son el valle de Barossa, el valle de Hunter y los alrededores de Adelaida, sin olvidar las bodegas del Margaret River, con un clima muy similar al de Burdeos.

Situación Geográfica

Es el sexto país más grande del planeta con 7.682.300 kilómetros cuadrados y se extiende a lo largo de 4.000 kilómetros de este a oeste y 3.200 kilómetros de norte a sur. Se divide en tres grandes zonas: la Gran Cordillera, la Zona Central y la Región del Oeste. A pesar de que dos terceras partes de Australia son desérticas o semidesérticas y experimentan una alta evaporación, esta isla cuenta con cerca de 700 lagos entre los que destacan el Torrens, Gairdner y el Eyre, situado a 11 metros por debajo del nivel del mar. Son numerosas las islas y arrecifes que cubren casi toda la costa oriental, donde se encuentra la Gran Barrera de Coral, que es la más grande del mundo.

Tradiciones y costumbres

Los indígenas australianos constituyen uno de los grupos humanos en los que el vestido es más somero. Lo más frecuente es la desnudez total, que a veces entre los hombres es ligeramente mitigada con un cinturón hecho de paja, piel o cabellos humanos y en otras ocasiones con un pequeño taparrabos de corteza. Para las ceremonias de iniciación, los aranda y los warramunga fabrican soberbios tocados de plumas. Por otra parte, con fines estéticos, suelen arrancarse a golpes algún incisivo y se practican cicatrices decorativas, valiéndose de cuchillos de pedernal. Una vez abiertas las heridas, las frotan con arcilla y excrementos para que se infecten y así la carne crece por encima del nivel normal, dejando grandes protuberancias sobre la piel. Es frecuente el uso de pinturas y tatuajes en la decoración corporal, especialmente con motivo de determinadas ceremonias de iniciación.

Festividades

Las fiestas nacionales australianas son: el día de Año Nuevo (1 de enero), El Día de Australia (26 de enero), Semana Santa (Viernes Santo a Lunes de Pascua), Día de Anzac (o día de la conmemoración de los ex-combatientes, 25 de abril), el Cumpleaños Oficial de la Reina Isabel II (segundo lunes de junio), Navidad (25 de diciembre) y el Boxing Day (26 de diciembre).

Hasta la llegada del hombre las tierras australianas habían albergado un gran número de especies de mamíferos marsupiales (que finalizan la gestación en el exterior, en la bolsa marsupial) que en el resto de continentes habían sucumbido a la supremacía de los mamíferos placentarios. Entre ellos destacan los canguros, wallabies, koalas, possums, wombats o topos marsupiales. Se encuentran además el ornitorrinco (especie propia y exclusiva del país), el equidna y el oso hormiguero espinoso. En cuanto a los carnívoros, sólo cuenta con una especie, el dingo o perro selvático. No son raras las serpientes y los cocodrilos en las zonas tropicales. En el sur de Tasmania se puede admirar el diablo de Tasmania, extraño carnívoro marsupial parecido a un zorro. Destaca la riqueza en fauna marina, en la que sobresalen ballenas, delfines, pingüinos, lobos marinos, focas y topos acuáticos. La ornitofauna es rica y variada con más de 650 especies, entre las que destacan los pájaros lira o pájaros del paraíso, papagayos, avestruces, casuarios, cisnes negros, loros y emús.

• A holiday to Australia cannot be cut short if you want to see all the country has to offer. Australia is a very, very big country, so plan for a long holiday (and save your money). Be prepared for long trips as even flying from coast to coast can take several hours.
• Head inland if you want to see the country's famous wildlife. That's where you're most likely to find kangaroos, koalas, and wombats in the wild.
• UV rays are particularly high in Australia as there is a large hole in the ozone right above the country. Pack (and be sure to wear) high-SPF sunscreen.
• Australia is perfect for swimming or surfing, but always pay attention to warning signs at the beach. Swim between the flags and beware of dangerous sea life.

Cattai National Park protects significant historic sites, but also offers loads of activities, like camping, canoeing, fishing, barbecues, bike riding and bird watching.

Cattai National Park is a fantastic place for a family daytrip or a weekend getaway. There are two parts to the park: the popular Cattai Farm area, flanked by the mighty Hawkesbury River, and the quieter Mitchell Park area.

Each section offers a fantastic experience in the great outdoors; Cattai Farm is great if you’re looking for a weekend camping trip, some canoeing or a big family barbecue. There’s also plenty of space for games and for children to ride bikes. History buffs will be interested to know that this parcel of land is an intact land grant given to a First Fleet settler – be sure to stop by the historic sites within this part of the park. Mitchell Park is more secluded, so it’s the place to be if you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon in the great outdoors. It’s also a good spot for fishing – you might catch carp or bass. If you feel like stretching your legs, there’s 5km of walking tracks that takes you through native vegetation, including scribbly gum forest and tall bloodwoods.

Cattai’s is in the far north of Sydney which makes it an excellent choice for a day out and a great place to take the kids on their first camping trip.

Cattai National Park is open 8am to 6pm from May to August and 8am to 8pm from September to April. The park may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

Park entry fees:

$8 per vehicle per day (including motorbikes). Day passes are available from on-park pay machines that accept coins and credit cards, and you can also pay for your visit via the Park’nPay app.
