Fin dal primo mattino, ci dedichiamo all'estrazione dei blocchi, principalmente destinati alla scultura. Durante la giornata effettuiamo le visite guidate MARMOTOUR della durata di circa un'ora. All'interno della cava, si percorrono 400 metri, su un unico livello facilmente agibile per tutti, dove si possono ammirare:

La nostra guida ti illustrerà il processo di taglio ed estrazione del marmo e ti racconterà la storia della cava. L'ingresso principale consigliato è quello in località Ravaccione, da dove è possibile osservare anche la Cava Michelangelo e la Stazione dell'antica Ferrovia Marmifera. Da questa entrata, ci seguirai lungo la galleria con il tuo automezzo per circa 600 metri. Una volta arrivati in cava, parcheggeremo e inizieremo il tour. Se ti presenterai invece in località Fantiscritti (dove si trova il nostro ingresso secondario) ti faremo salire sui nostri minibus per un tragitto di circa 3 minuti che ti porterà nel cuore della montagna.

The Cava Museo Fantiscritti, an open-air museum of the most famous marble in the world

The Cava Museo di Fantiscritti , immersed in the heart of the majestic Carrara marble quarries, represents an authentic gem set between the slopes of Monte Croce, just above the picturesque hamlet of Miseglia. Its breathtaking scenery, framed by the majestic Vara Bridges, embodies the iconic visual stereotype of the Carrara quarries. This panorama is revealed in all its magnificence both in the light of midday, with the sun dancing on the marble walls, and in the magical atmosphere of the night, when the moon paints the rocks with silver shades and the shadows lengthen mysteriously.

The two historic nineteenth-century bridges, evidence of the railway engineering of the last century, stand as monuments to human mastery. The Marble Railway, with its bold viaducts and imposing bridges, was the main means of transport of the precious marbles coming from the marble basins of Torano, Miseglia and Colonnata.

Continuing along the asphalt road, you reach the suggestive Poggio di Fantiscrive, where concerts and shows are held during the summer, offering moments of entertainment immersed in the natural beauty of the place. Through the former railway tunnel, you access the suggestive underground quarry of the Ravaccione tunnel, an imposing marble cathedral set in the heart of the mountain.

The open-air museum, inaugurated in 1987, offers a unique and evocative setting, immersed in the white splendor of marble, which tells the story and the work over the centuries inside the Carrara quarries. Not only a testimony to the hard work of the workers, but also a tribute to Carrara marble, a symbol of Italian excellence recognized throughout the world.

The thousand-year-old origins of the Cave di Fantiscritti date back to Roman times, as demonstrated by the discovery of an ancient bas-relief depicting three divinities, which gave the site its name. Inside the museum, the visitor can immerse himself in the ancient profession of the quarryman and in the daily life of the workers and their families until 1960. You can admire life-size sculptures that reproduce scenes of daily life and work, as well as the signatures of illustrious visitors such as Giambologna and Antonio Canova.

The museum also houses a laboratory where you can admire some sculptures created by Boutros Romein, which reproduce figures of workers and the tools they used to extract marble. Two routes, one outdoors and one underground, allow visitors to explore the quarry, accompanied by expert guides who illustrate the marble extraction and processing process.

In the Cava-Museo di Fantiscritti there is a notable and interesting collection of tools and objects relating to work in the quarries. Here you can also visit a typical quarrymen’s house. The museum also often hosts artist exhibitions, further enriching visitors’ cultural and artistic experience.

Il tutto sarà accompagnato da un’ottima degustazine del famoso lardo di colonnata.

Indimenticabile ed unica infatti la visita ai tre bacini marmiferi delle cave di marmo di Torano, Fantiscritti e Colonnata. Lungo il tracciato della ex Ferrovia Marmifera, i visitatori compiono uno spettacolare viaggio, passando sui ponti di Vara e all’interno delle suggestive gallerie scavate nella roccia, alla scoperta delle cave, da cui già in epoca pre-romanica si estraeva il marmo bianco di Carrara. Dall’età imperiale fino alla metà del XX secolo, quando furono costruite le prime strade di arroccamento, i blocchi erano trasportati a valle con il pericoloso metodo della lizzatura: il marmo arrivava al porto di Luni percorrendo la via Carraia sopra carri trainati dai buoi (una rievocazione storica della lizzatura viene effettuata nel mese di agosto).

Bacino di Torano Il Bacino di Torano è tra i tre quello più “lunare” data la forte frantumazione di numerose sezioni della montagna. Prende il nome dall’omonimo paese, la suggestiva frazione di Torano, dove vi erano le celebri cave di marmi statuari che dal Trecento ad oggi hanno dato materia ai sogni dei più grandi artisti. Entrando nel bacino dopo aver superato il paese di Torano di circa un chilometro, si trova, sul lato occidentale, il gruppo delle cave di Pescina, cui si accede dal precedente bivio per Pulcinacchia, mentre sul lato orientale, vi sono le rinomate cave di Crestola che serrano a ponente l’imbuto naturale che introduce al bacino di Torano.

Bacino di Fantiscritti È il cuore dei giacimenti marmiferi carraresi: si svela all’improvviso non appena vengono superate le pendici del Monte Croce, poco sopra la frazione di Miseglia. La sua visione suggestiva dei Ponti di Vara è un classico stereotipo visivo delle cave carraresi; una veduta d’insieme di notevole effetto, sia durante il giorno dell’assolato mezzogiorno che nella magica atmosfera della notte, quando la luna rende profonde le ombre ed il soffuso chiarore delle rocce. Qui si incontrano i due storici ponti ottocenteschi (1890) della Ferrovia Marmifera – una tra le più ammirate realizzazioni dell’ingegneria ferroviaria del secolo scorso – con il ponte  della rotabile, ultimato negli anni ’30. La Ferrovia Marmifera  per il trasporto a valle dei marmi, collegava i tre bacini marmiferi di Torano, Miseglia e Colonnata attraverso una ardita serie di viadotti, ponti e gallerie. Risaliti oltre, lungo la rotabile asfaltata, dopo un paio di tornanti si giunge al Poggio di Fantiscritti, dove un moderno piazzale permette, durante l’estate, la realizzazione di concerti e spettacoli. Sul lato ovest del piazzale, entrando nella ex galleria ferroviaria e percorrendola per circa duecento metri, si giunge all’interno della suggestiva cava sotterranea della galleria di Ravaccione, una immensa cattedrale scavata nel cuore del monte.

Bacino di Colonnata È il più orientale dei tre bacini carraresi: risalendo la strada comunale per Colonnata dal Ponte di Ferro (costruito nel 1875), uno dei più antichi della Ferrovia Marmifera, si incontrano numerose segherie, eredi dei primitivi impianti sei-settecenteschi per il taglio delle lastre anticamente azionati dalla forza motrice delle acque. Passata Mortarola, sbocco antico delle vecchie vie dei carri si giunge a Bedizzano e si prosegue, in direzione Colonnata. Attraversato per circa un chilometro un fitto bosco di castagneti giunge ad un magnifico esempio di cava a pozzo, profonda alcune decine di metri. In questo bacino, sulla sommità del monte, si trova il più grande complesso di cave di tutto il comprensorio carrarese: Cave di Gioia. E’ possibile risalire ancora più in alto, ovviamente a piedi, lungo la strada sterrata che sale verso il culmine del monte, per godere di una irripetibile veduta d’insieme delle cave di Gioia, alle quali fa da sfondo lo snodarsi a semicerchio il versante massese delle Apuane. Impegnandosi in una agevole passeggiata di un quarto d’ora si potrà dominare un vasto paesaggio sugli alti gioghi delle Apuane ed in particolare sulla Tambura dove è possibile intravedere il lento e tortuoso incedere della settecentesca Via Vandelli, piccoli paesi inerpicati sulle pendici della valle del Frigido, e sull’altro una spettacolare quanto insolita vista di Colonnata e del Monte Maggiore.

La visia alle cave è sempre soggetta a guida di personale esperto e/o abilitato; di seguito le tre modalità di visita:

– Richiedendo il servizio con una Guida Turistica autorizzata della provincia di Massa-Carrara consultabile  qui

– Salendo con il proprio mezzo da Carrara verso i Bacini di Miseglia (Fantiscritti), Ravaccione e di Colonnata, per ammirare il suggestivo panorama estrattivo e visitare :

• Cava 177 (cava attiva a cielo aperto)
• Cava Galleria Ravaccione (cava attiva in ngalleria, dove si entra con il proprio mezzo di trasporto)
• Cava Museo Danesi (esposizione open air)
• Cava Romana di Fossacava : (non più attiva, testimonia l’escavazione già dall’epoca romana)

Per raggiungere il paese di Colonnata è possibile usufruire anche del bus n° 50, che parte da Carrara centro -capolinea Ospedale- e impiega circa 15-20 minuti per arrivare in loco.

In modern times Carrara’s marble is still largely used, among the most famous projects the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi or the modern Oslo Opera House.

Today, even if the extraction activities continue, visitors can take guided tours to learn about the quarries’ rich history, discover ancient techniques, and marvel at the beauty of the white marble walls.

Walter Danesi Sr. has collected the tools of his life as a quarryman and put them on display for everyone to enjoy in this open-air museum. From sculptures to everyday objects, his routine but also historical objects to understand how the excavation was with the traditional techniques. The tour is very interesting and can be easily combined with a 4WD excursion or Marmo Tour bus ride to see the quarries from the inside.

Marmotour covers the history of Michelangelo’s favorite source of marble, il Ravaccione . After a short bus ride, you will enter the active marble quarry, a shiny white cathedral.

During the tour, you will also get to see the tribute to Michelangelo by artist Ozmo. It consists in a giant mural that reproduces Michelangelo’s fresco “The Creation of Adam” from the Sistine Chapel.

Differently from the other tours, the Carrara Marble Quarry Private Tour lasts 4 hours and in addition to the exploration of an active marble quarry, you will get to explore Carrara historic center with your guide. Of course, the tour includes a stop at one of Colonnata’s restaurants to taste their excellent lard!

The 4WD tours are an incredible experience, but it is NOT suitable for the faint of heart! The narrow roads that run among the quarries have incredible views, but if you suffer from vertigo you may be disturbed. In the same fashion, some breathtaking views from the panoramic points are on top of deep cliffs.

Especially when exploring the interiors of the marble quarries it may be chilly . If you are particularly sensitive to the temperatures bring a jacket or scarf to protect yourself.

Ride along some of the most panoramic (and narrow!) roads in Italy. Reaching the quarries’ sites is already an adventure itself! Once you arrive in Colonnata village, you can take one of the treks that from there climbs up and observe the mountains open heart from afar.

A special mention for the scenic Vara Bridges . By the end of the 19th century, to speed up the transportation process, the Ferrovia Marmifera , Marble Railroad, was created.

After the war the system became obsolete and trucks took the monopoly of transportation instead. But the bridges stayed and they are now part of the beautiful landscape of the valley.

If you want to see the active marble quarries from the inside, the only way is via a guided tour due to the particularity of the location. The drivers have a special license to drive inside the quarries.
