It’s very durable, doesn’t scuff too easily, and has plenty of compartments to keep clothes organized.” Its four-wheel design rolls easily and quietly, too, even when the bag is full and gliding over bumpy streets.

While you could go larger with The Large or The Large Flex, this one got editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs through two weeks of travel without needing to do laundry; if you need more space, we'd recommend shifting to a trunk-style bag. Hobbs calls the bag “perfectly light” when empty, with an unassuming interior—one compartment closes, the other side is held in by compression straps. While he'd expect “a smidgeon more durability” at the price point, the bag does exactly what you want it to: rolls well, is easy to haul up and down as needed, especially with the new underside handle, and comes with both a dust bag and a laundry bag. If you own a smaller Away bag, it will nest inside this one for more compact storage.

While we've long been fans of Béis' soft-sided suitcases and weekender bags, we knew we needed to test out the popular hard-shell suitcases ahead of luggage week. Unsurprisingly, both sizes were a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveler who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys . The bag itself is easy to pick up—“I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily”—and easy to look at: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on vacation. Tested by research director Alexandra Sanidad , the bag “can fit a week’s worth of clothing if you pack lightly, or a weekend’s worth if you’re bringing multiple day and night outfits.” It has two evenly-sized compartments inside, and is very easy to roll and navigate around obstacles on the ground like puddles and trash, Sanidad says. Order it in one of six classic colors or two limited-edition colors, and know that you can personalize it with your initials, or your pet's face (yep, you read that right).

Recently redesigned with an upgraded interior compression system, Away's The Bigger Carry-On is great for travelers looking to stretch the limits of what a carry-on can usually handle. Senior commerce editor, Madison Flager has used the brand's previous iteration for years, packing it on trips as long as 11 days. Editorial assistant Jessica Chapel tested out the newer model, and appreciated its durable wheels, new underside grab handle, and multiple interior compartments.

Samsonite's high-quality luggage has continued to perform well in our tests over the years , specifically in terms of durability and ease of use. The brand's Freeform hardside suitcase is a favorite of our consumer testers who agree that its wheels roll smoothly and that the bag is easy to maneuver around twists and turns. It also received perfect scores in Lab tests for being a breeze to open and close.

Inside, you'll find a zippered panel and an adjustable cross strap to keep your belongings in place, and we fit our entire packing load in the bag with room to spare. Our consumer testers did point out that the carrying handles are on the smaller side, but they still thought the bag was easy to pick up. There are three different sizes to choose from, or you can buy a set including a carry-on and a checked bag.

With more than 31,000 five-star reviews and a 4.6-star average rating, Amazon Basics' hardside luggage is a favorite of real users and GH analysts alike. When we tested this bag in our Lab, we found it to be spacious, and it received perfect scores for easy packing. Online reviewers agree, adding that they can fill the suitcase with more than enough clothing and essentials for their trips.

The suitcase is made with ABS plastic, which isn't as durable as some other hard materials, but it is lightweight and keeps the price low. Testers appreciated the luggage's wheel performance, sharing that the bag is easy to maneuver, but they found the telescopic handle to be flimsier than other models they tried. This suitcase comes in three different sizes and is available in two and three-piece sets for an even better value.

Several of our Lab experts have been using Away luggage for years and have found them to stand the test of time. T his pick is made of polycarbonate material, which means it's lightweight yet durable. In our testing, we dropped it repeatedly from a 3-foot height, and there were no major signs of damage.

Our consumer testers thought the wheels on Away suitcases rolled smoothly and found they were easy to maneuver, but the handle isn't as sturdy as some other styles. In our packing tests, we were impressed by the compressive panels meant to keep your belongings in place and by the hidden laundry bag you can use to separate your dirty clothes. If you use the suitcase and decide it isn't right for you, the brand offers a 100-day return policy for any reason.

One of the top performers in our Textiles Lab evaluations, the hardside spinner from Open Story at Target is available for an incredible value. The carry-on model is loaded with useful features like a built-in USB port to charge your phone (battery not included), a removable laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separated and three internal mesh pockets for organization.

Our testers loved the bag's modern look and trendy color options. They also appreciated that the TSA-approved lock is embedded at the top of the suitcase for easier access instead of on the side. When we put the bag through our repeated drop testing in our Lab, the polycarbonate didn't dent or show major signs of damage, but the hardside material did show some marks in our scratch test.

For luggage that's equally fashionable and functional, Calpak's Ambeur suitcases are a great option. The hardshell bags are made with a blend of ABS plastic and polycarbonate that's both lightweight and durable, but we did find the metallic colors scuffed easily. In Lab evaluations, the luggage was dubbed our "tester favorite" because consumer testers were so wowed by the design and ease of use.

The telescopic handles aced our tests, with one tester sharing that it was the "smoothest handle by far" out of all of the bags available for testing. Other testers agreed, explaining that the padded handles were comfortable to lift, pull and push. Plus, the Ambeur luggage aced our packing tests. If you don't need a set of three bags, you can opt for a two-piece set or choose from any of the five styles available.

Travelpro designs luggage for frequent travelers and primarily offers soft fabric luggage, but the brand does have a few hardside pieces including the Maxlite Spinner. This bag has a roomy luggage compartment with two zippered panels, and it can be expanded by 2 inches, lending you extra room for all of your souvenirs on the trip home.

In our Lab tests, Travelpro bags were easy to fill with a full load of clothing and travel gear like toiletries and shoes. They also performed well and earned high durability ratings. Testers loved the cushioned telescopic handles which lock at two different heights. We did find the carrying handles to be on the tighter side, which can make the bag difficult to lift into an overhead bin.

Heys Fashion Spinner 30"

For a fun suitcase that's easy to spot on an airport luggage carousel , try one of Heys' Fashion Spinners. Choose from cute character designs, trendy animal prints, watercolor scenes and bold graphic patterns.

The brand's suitcases are made of a polycarbonate and ABS plastic composite — primarily ABS with a polycarbonate coating for protection. They weren't the most durable in our evaluations and showed some scratches in our tests, but they earned high scores for ease of use. The bag's interior is filled with organizational pockets and compression panels to easily pack all of your belongings. One GH analyst who has owned a Fashion Spinner set for over a decade said the long-lasting bags were spacious and could fit everything needed for a trip, even before using the zippered expansion system.

Rimowa only makes hardside luggage, and it's a cutting-edge brand that continues to impress our Textiles Lab experts . The Original line is made with aluminum, which is more durable than other hard materials like ABS plastic and polycarbonate. This style of suitcase features the brand's iconic grooved design and has a zipperless closure, opting for locking latches instead — TSA-approved, of course.

When you open the suitcase, you'll find two spacious packing compartments and two adjustable compression panels to keep your belongings in place. Rimowa's suitcases are much more expensive than other brands, but they are among the best in our tests with high ratings for packing space, durability and maneuverability.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Hardside International Spinner Luggage

This innovative suitcase from Briggs & Riley is full of features to make packing for an international trip easier. On the outside of t he hardside suitcase is an easy-access pocket for your phone and ID. The bag unzips into one large packing space that's fully lined and contains three zip pockets for easy organization. Plus, the bag utilizes Briggs & Riley's unique expansion system, which allows you to expand the bag for additional packing space and then compress it to its standard size once the bag has been filled — with just the push of a button. Our testers recently tried a softside bag from the brand with the same system and were blown away by how much they could fit inside, sharing that there was way more room than expected.

When we tested Briggs & Riley's hardside suitcases in the Textiles Lab, they performed well, receiving high scores for durability, water resistance and ease of use. Testers also shared that the brand's bags were easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and said the telescopic handles were sturdy. Although we didn't experience this issue, some online reviewers have shared that the zipper pulls are prone to breaking with regular use.

Monos' less-is-more approach to design results in a sleek, timeless look that our testers love. The durable polycarbonate luggage may have a simple appearance but doesn't skimp on quality or useful packing features. Inside, you'll find two spacious compartments: one zipper-enclosed compartment and one with an adjustable compression panel. There are also additional zipper pockets inside for even more organized storage space.

The large checked version of this bag was a GH 2023 Family Travel Awards recipient. It aced our durability tests, resisting major dents and damages after being dropped repeatedly from a 3-foot height, but it did show some signs of wear in our scratch tests. When testers tried it in our luggage obstacle course, they were impressed by how easy the bag was to maneuver and how smoothly the spinner wheels rolled around twists and turns. The brand offers sets for an even better value and a generous 100-day return policy.

Victorinox Airox Large Hardside Case

Most large "lightweight" hardshell luggage still weighs at least 10.5 lbs, but this pick from Victorinox is just 9 lbs. We love the unique "butterfly open" interior, which allows you to fold the divider panels out of the way for easy access to the main compartments.

Although we haven't tested this particular bag in the Lab, we have tested many other bags from Victorinox that have received perfect scores in our durability tests and have been rated highly for ease of use. This bag is made of the same polycarbonate material and is designed with many of the same features as the bags we've tested, though you may notice the unique design of the telescopic handle. It's a T-shape which helps keep the weight down, but it does make it less comfortable to pull long distances.

How we test luggage

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test luggage using specialized equipment in our Textiles Lab and with consumer testers . When we review luggage, we consider these factors:

✔️ Size and weight: In the Lab, we measure the size and weight of each suitcase to ensure that all online size claims are accurate. We place carry-on bags in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to see if they meet TSA size requirements.

✔️ Extra features: We make note of any additional features or components that make the luggage stand out, like carrying handles, built-in locks and telescopic handles that adjust to different heights.

✔️ Ease of use: We rate how easy it is to zip and unzip each piece of luggage (pictured here) and consider the accessibility of any packing compartments. We also consider features like telescopic handles and wheels.

After packing each bag, we roll it over different surfaces including tile, carpet and hardwood and test the carrying handles by lifting the bag onto a countertop.

✔️ Packing: We fill each bag with a standard packing load for a two-night trip including clothing, accessories and toiletries (picture here) and then score the suitcases based on how much they're able to hold.

✔️ Drop testing: Each piece of luggage is filled with a standard weight and dropped from a 3-foot height from different angles to mimic real use (pictured here). We then analyze the luggage for signs of damage like dents or cracks.

✔️ Consumer testing: Consumer testers take part in our obstacle course that involves rolling the bags over different surfaces like carpet, tile and wood flooring (pictured here), lifting the bags, maneuvering the bags around cones and more. They also share their thoughts on properties like ease of use, sturdiness of the handles and wheel performance.

We share suitcases with testers who are able to take the bags on their own trips and provide us with real-world feedback about their experiences.

What to look for when shopping for the best hardside luggage

When shopping for a hardside suitcase, here are a few things to keep in mind:

✔️ Material: Not all hardside suitcases are made from the same hard material, and the material can impact performance, weight and price. These are the most common:

• Aluminum is the most durable material for hardside luggage, but it's much heavier than other options and can be pretty expensive.
• Polycarbonate is the most popular material for hard luggage. It is both lightweight and durable, but it can scratch easily.
• ABS is a plastic material that is more affordable and even more lightweight than polycarbonate, but it is a bit less durable.
• Polypropylene is another type of plastic that is even lighter than and slightly stronger than ABS plastic. It's fairly durable and affordable, as well.
• A composite or mixture of polycarbonate, ABS and/or polypropylene combines aspects of each material. Most composite suitcases are made with an ABS base coated in polycarbonate material. This adds extra durability, but it still isn't quite as durable as a suitcase made of 100% polycarbonate.

✔️ Wheels: Wheels with 360° spin receive the best maneuverability scores in our Lab tests and with consumer testers. These wheels allow the luggage to rotate fully and move side to side in addition to moving straight ahead.

✔️ Handles: There are two types of handles you should consider: telescopic handles and carrying handles. Telescopic handles extend from the suitcase so you can push and pull the bag around. Check to see if the handle is easy to open and close, whether or not it can be adjusted and if it's padded for comfort. If you're going to be lifting and lowering your bag often, make sure the side and top carrying handles are large enough for you to easily grip them.

✔️ Compartments: Internal compartments aren't necessary, but they can be helpful when it comes to packing and securing your belongings. Interior pockets are often made with mesh panels to allow your belongings to breathe and to help you see what's inside. There are zip pockets to hold extra belongings and zip panels to keep clothing separated inside the suitcase – so you can keep your running shoes away from your nice dress. Some hardside suitcases also come with removable compartments like a laundry bag to contain dirty clothes or a garment bag to hang clothing.

✔️ Returns and warranties: Luggage warranties tend to only cover manufacturer defects, which can often be difficult to prove. If you're worried about spending money on luggage you won't love, opt for a brand that offers a trial period or generous return policy so that you can test the bag before committing, especially if you're shopping online without seeing it in person first.

Sleek, light and zippy, hardside suitcase styles are quickly becoming the norm when it comes to investing in a suitcase. The current styles on the market utilise the latest in polycarbonate, polypropylene or similar materials – sometimes recycled – to create a strong and durable yet lightweight shell, making them a breeze to lift and manoeuvre. They’re more water-resistant than softside offerings and increasingly becoming more stylish via chic colour schemes that are easily spotted on the baggage carousel.

Why choose a hard-shell suitcase?

As we mention in our guide to the best luggage brands , we prefer using a hard shell suitcase for our check-in luggage. While they tend to cost more, hard-side suitcases are designed to be more durable, offer better protection and are easier to clean than soft fabric styles. While for carry-on luggage , we prefer softside styles or hard shell luggage with outer pockets.

How we choose the best hard shell suitcases

Every case on this list has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors, Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill, or our colleagues from Traveler US . We run each hard shell suitcase through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal. Below are the stand-out cases we’ve taken on our travels.

As with the whole Stamford range, the case is made from sturdy polycarbonate, and features high-quality 360-degree spinner wheels. There’s plenty of room in this generous large size case, but if you need more, the expandable zip offers 5 centimetres of extra space. Inside, there are three zip-up compartments on one side, as well as a divider on the other that sits under the compression straps and is fully removable. For those who want even more organisation, the brand also has a range of packing cubes designed to fit perfectly.

Our best budget hard-side luggage

This is the largest suitcase from Nere's bestselling Stori range , providing ample storage for two-week plus trips, and it’s further expandable to help you squeeze in all the souvenirs you’ve picked up throughout your travels. An ABS hard shell outer should keep belongings well-protected in the hold, and there are two additional pockets inside, as well as roomy clothing compartments. It comes in the full array of the brand’s signature pastel colours, and there are matching smaller cases – including full luggage sets – that can be stored neatly inside when not in use. A TSA lock provides extra peace of mind, as does the 10-year warranty – impressive given the very reasonable price point. If you’re looking for an inexpensive case that will see you through longer holidays, this one’s hard to beat.

Monos, the Vancouver-based premium luggage brand, has been winning fans with its minimal selection of duffels, backpacks and suitcases since its inception in 2019. It’s not style over substance, either: aerospace-grade polycarbonate shells and recycled elements feature wherever possible, and it's the first luggage brand to earn Climate Neutral certification, meaning it’s achieved net zero carbon emissions as a company. The brand’s largest check-in size case is a winner for our team, too. Commerce writer Charley Ward rates it as one of the best suitcases she’s ever used, thanks to its large selection of overpacker-friendly compartments, compression system and dividers, which make squeezing in yet another just-in-case outfit a breeze. The Rose Quartz colour is lovely and makes it easy to spot on the baggage carousel, but it does show scuffs quickly – the case was marked up noticeably on its first outing. If this bothers you, a cover might be a worthy investment.

Trendy brand Away is probably best known for its sleek carry-on case, but its large suitcase is equally impressive. One of our writers actually  used this case when she moved countries and particularly loved the in-build compression pad, removable interior lining and the leather luggage tag that it comes with. Another clever feature worth noting is the addition of a handle underneath, allowing for easier grip when you need to lift it, plus the expandable zip that allows for an extra 4.45cm of space.

Our best eco-friendly hard shell luggage

The look of Paravel’s Aviator luggage collection alone is enough to make it a winner – a textured shell available in five different shades with contrasting leather trim, plus the option to add a monogram to the trim as well. But in addition to the aesthetic, this case is also the world’s first carbon-neutral suitcase. Not only are most of the materials recycled, from the lightweight polycarbonate to the aluminium handles, the zippers and even the vegan leather but the brand offsets all carbon emissions generated by creating and shipping the Aviator Grand to you, as well as the estimated emissions of its first trip with you.

A great value case, Travelpro Maxlite’s comes with all of the classic features (TSA-approved lock, 360 degree spinner wheels), but with a few extra impressive bells and whistles as well. One clever addition is the polycarbonate hard shell has an impact absorbing finish on it (essentially a 3D-stripe texture), designed to help reduce scuffs and scratches. We also love that the interior lining is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

With three jewel-tone shades to choose from, this Briggs & Riley looks great on the outside. Inside it’s even better, particularly if you like to stay organised with multiple pockets. On one side there are three zip-up mesh pockets – one large and two small. On the other are very clever adjustable garment compression panels. Instead of the usual zip style, these open out into two flaps and are easily secured together with two buckles, so it’s easier to fit more while still neatly securing everything in place.

As part of the LVMH group, German designer luggage brand Rimowa has some of the slickest suitcases on the market. While they’re probably best known for their aluminium cases, the check-in medium case is made from an ultralight polycarbonate shell that comes in four different glossy shades and one matte. While not every traveller will be open to the high price tag, if you’re a frequent flyer looking for the best in looks and function, this is a worthy investment. As well as being one of the most durable cases on the market, it’s also the lightest hard shell check-in suitcase in our guide.

If we had to pick our favourite luggage in terms of timeless looks , it would be Brics’ Bellagio range. The classic cream case with tan leather trim – even the enlarged spinner wheels are tan – is the epitome of Italian elegance. While the case looks timeless, it does feature a range of modern details, such as a water-repellant zip with a TSA-approved lock and an adjustable handle.

A sturdy yet lightweight case that's great for longer trips (think one to two weeks). This Arlo Skye check-in is especially great when paired with Arlo's Zipper Carry-On if you're short on storage space – the carry-on nests inside the larger case when it's empty. Inside, you'll find two even-sized compartments; one-half zips closed and has a large zippered pocket built in to secure items like hats, bathing suits, belts, or bags. The other side is secured by compression straps, but still has two smaller zippered pockets to hold undergarments or socks.

You've likely spotted a Herschel backpack on a plane, train, or city street, but don't overlook the brand's suitcases. This medium-size roller fits a ton, Kenny says: “I packed everything I needed for a two-week trip and definitely had a little bit of room to spare. It fits a lot more than most suitcases I’ve used before. It’s very durable, doesn’t scuff too easily, and has plenty of compartments to keep clothes organised.” Its four-wheel design rolls easily and quietly, too, even when the bag is full and gliding over bumpy streets.

Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments. July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. If you struggle to manhandle your case in and out of the overhead compartments, this is the best option for you. Its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement, seriously impressed our commerce writer Charley Ward . It’s small but feels remarkably sturdy, comfortably fitting three days' worth of items inside while remaining impressively lightweight even when full. We were struck by this case’s build quality, including the wheels especially, which made light work of bumpy terrain. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag. This partly recycled hardshell case has a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad.

While we've long been fans of Béis' soft-sided suitcases and weekender bags, we knew we needed to test out the popular hard-shell suitcases. Unsurprisingly, both sizes were a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. The bag itself is easy to pick up – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy to look at: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on vacation. I’d have to agree that the colour is beautiful, the size is ideal, and the ribbed exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

For a little more space when you need it, choose the Flex. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by Kramer for trips including a one-week vacation to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

Used often by Spurrell , who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures, this bag has never let her down. She calls it surprisingly roomy, and notes its sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. Best Hard-Shell Carry-On Luggage

We pulled, dragged, dropped, stretched, stabbed, soaked, and otherwise abused some of the most popular spinner bags out there. The result? Two suitcases costing under $90 bested bags priced over $500.

In Consumer Reports’ recent tests of hard-shell carry-on luggage , two inexpensive bags beat out suitcases costing hundreds more, including one at six times the price.

The bargain winners are hard-shell carry-on spinner bags branded by popular retailers. They’re both just under $90 and are among four carry-ons that Consumer Reports recommends. The highest-rated bag in CR’s ratings, by a long-standing luggage brand, is $260.

In contrast, two hard-shell suitcases costing $500 or more ranked in the middle of the pack or below. And a well-regarded online brand for $275 didn’t measure up, either. In fact, that contender turned out to be the most unsteady suitcase in our tests.

The bottom line? “Our testing shows that performance does not correlate with price,” says Chris Regan, the engineer who leads CR’s luggage tests.

Best Hard-Shell Carry-on Luggage

Why Choose a Hard-Shell Suitcase

The popularity of hard-shell luggage has grown in recent years, thanks in part to marketing by premium brands such as Away and Rimowa. Typically made of high-tech plastic, hard-shell bags are a good option for protecting your valuables. Some models expand in the middle like soft-sided luggage, offering added flexibility when you need more space. (We’ve also evaluated soft-sided weekender bags and travel backpacks in our Outside the Labs reviews program.)

As a group, the hard-shell carry-on bags we tested performed capably, with every bag getting a very good Overall Score. But they differed in how easy they were to open, pack, close, and maneuver, and in how well they withstood our rigorous simulations of the wear and abuse that a travel bag must endure.

Those differences can be meaningful when you’re on the road. “You’re going to be pulling the luggage, picking it up, going up and down curbs,” Regan says. “You want it to not only serve in its intended use but also survive if it has to be checked—or you have to sit on it during a long layover.”

Meeting Airline's Carry-On Requirements

All of the bags in our tests were called “carry-ons” or specified in their names that they were less than 22 inches tall. But don’t assume from those labels that they meet the carry-on dimension requirement of the strictest U.S. domestic carriers, which is 22x14x9 inches (height by width by depth). According to the manufacturers’ listed measurements, not all bags in our ratings were actually within that limit, even if they were advertised as carry-ons.

Suitcases we tested from Target’s Made by Design brand, as well as those from Away, Briggs & Riley, CALPAK, and Monos were likely to pass muster regardless of the carrier you fly. The suitcase we tested from Amazon Basics comes very close to those dimensions.

How CR Tests Hard-Shell Luggage

In Consumer Reports’ tests, we put small, hard-shell carry-on bags—basic models—from numerous brands through 31 different evaluations of use, durability, ergonomics, safety, and other aspects of ownership.

To gauge durability, for instance, we fill each bag with fabric until its total weight is almost 18 pounds, then wheel it along an obstacle-studded conveyor belt for the equivalent of 30-plus miles. We have a machine lift those loaded bags by their handles 5,000 times. We drop them more than 3 feet onto hard flooring after storing them at summer and winter temperatures, conditions that are potentially tough on hard plastic. We leave the bags, zipped, in a sprinkler-induced downpour to see what seeps through their zipper fabric. We inflate a large air bladder inside to check how the seams hold up. We load almost 225 pounds on top and to the side to gauge each bag’s resilience should they end up at the bottom of a cargo pile. And we swing a nasty-looking 17-pound pointed metal hammer twice at each carry-on to see what would happen if, say, the bag accidentally fell from a plane’s overhead compartment onto an armrest. 

We don’t fixate only on the bags’ strength. We also consider ergonomics: how convenient each hard-shell carry-on is to open, pack, and close, and how well various pockets, flaps, closures, and locks work. We examine how easy it is for men and women of different sizes to grab handles and straps, and to carry and pull the cases. We check how stable each bag is when rolled or pulled up steps and over sidewalks, curbs, cobblestones, and dirt roads. Some of the hard-shell carry-on luggage models in our tests have the ability to expand in the middle using designs involving zippers and rip-stop fabric; we check how much roomier those bags become when expanded. 

We also evaluate manufacturing quality, volume claims, and safety.

As someone who has never managed to take a vacation without purchasing something bulky and delicate to take home with me (vinyl records, ceramics, bottles of wine — you name it, I’ve packed it), I much prefer hard-shell suitcases over soft-sided options. A hard-side suitcase will shield what’s inside of it from sudden drops or bangs, where a soft-side offers far less protection. Most of the experts I’ve spoken to agree: They say that as well as being more durable, hard-side suitcases are easier to wipe clean, slide from luggage racks, and rely on. They’re harder to repair than soft-side suitcases; a crack will be fatal — but that’s what warranties are for.

Hard-side suitcases are usually made from either polycarbonate plastic or a plastic called ABS (but there are also some made from old-fashioned aluminum). Polycarbonate plastic is more durable than ABS, so it tends to cost a little more, but alongside my fellow Strategist travel writer Rachael Griffiths I’ve tracked down and tested cases made from both types of plastic that are affordable and reliable . We also asked more than 20 travel professionals about the brands and styles they recommend. While you’re here, I’ve also written guides to the best weekend bags and the best travel pillows .

What we’re looking for

The material best for you will largely depend on the kind of trips you plan on taking. If your vacation involves long weekends at a friend’s beach house, you can get away with a lighter case made of less durable ABS. But if you’re plane- and train-hopping through Europe for the summer or spending several weeks trekking across Southeast Asia, you might want to invest in a sturdier case (like one made of polycarbonate) that can take a knock or two.

Longer trips need bigger suitcases. For ease of comparison, I’ve focused on carry-on options here, but most companies make these suitcases in larger sizes too. Size and weight allowances for carry-on cases will vary by airline, and most companies I looked into (including Alaska and Delta) measure the dimensions or weight of cases. Four spinner wheels glide in all directions and are my favorite. You can also buy suitcases with two wheels, but I find that the four spinner wheels glide so much easier — which is valuable when trying to reach an Airbnb on a cobbled street. So all the picks here have four wheels.

Pecorella says it’s important to do your homework when it comes to warranty because, once a hard-side case cracks, it’s pretty tough to repair. “This is what we tell our customers all the time: If you are a regular traveler, really look into the luggage brand’s warranty and see what they are covering and what they are not covering,” he says. All of the cases on this list have a lifetime warranty, which covers your case for life, or a limited lifetime warranty, which means your case is covered for a certain number of years.

Made from thick polycarbonate, I’m impressed with how sturdy yet lightweight Away’s ubiquitous suitcases are. I’m more than comfortable with packing breakables inside of one and am always confident that its handles and wheels will survive the perilous trip from the cargo hold to the luggage carousel. Cute as well as functional, Away suitcases are available in bright colors as well as neutral ones, and any scratches can be touched up with the brand’s eraser, which is included with each purchase. Away’s hard-side luggage is available in a few sizes; I’ve been testing the Bigger Carry-on, which is the most popular. That’s because it has a huge 50-liter capacity, but it still fits inside most overhead bins . (Though on some budget and most European airlines, it’s too big to class as a carry-on — you’d have to opt for the smaller size.)

Design-wise, Away’s definitely not trying to reinvent the wheel. Its luggage has all the features that you’d expect, but each feature has been executed perfectly. The 360-degree spinner wheels, for example, “make light work of the cobbled London street I regularly drag it along,” says Griffiths. And the telescopic handle is remarkably sturdy, which means you can use it to occasionally give up and drag your suitcase up and down stairs.

Numerous Strategist staffers have owned and used Away suitcases for years and years, including our editor Maxine Builder, who successfully took advantage of Away’s lifetime warranty and claimed a brand-new suitcase after the zipper on hers eventually broke. You can also just look around the airport for proof of durability: The brand switches up its colorways seasonally, but I frequently see long-discontinued shades on the baggage carousel or nestled overhead on flights.

Best (less-expensive) hard-side suitcase

Material: Polycarbonate | Capacity: 43 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited ten-year warranty

Usually, cheaper hard-side suitcases are made from ABS, a less durable plastic than the polycarbonate more expensive brands use. That’s why this case is such a rarity: It costs less than $200 (and is often on sale), and it’s made from the more durable polycarbonate. It also includes all of the features I’d expect from more expensive brands, like four 360-degree spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, and a built-in USB port to use with a power bank. Travel blogger  Courtney Vondran  says that “it’s a great option for budget travelers or first-timer carry-on travelers who want nice pieces for more affordable prices.” So far, Vondran has taken her case with her on “road trips throughout the Midwest, a work trip to Egypt, a vacation to L.A. , a travel conference in Memphis, and a romantic getaway to Maine,” — and it’s been protected by the case’s limited ten-year warranty, which covers any major damages beyond reasonable wear and tear.

Best ABS hard-side suitcase

Material: ABS hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity : 34 liters | Warranty: Limited warranty

A hard-side suitcase made from ABS rather than polycarbonate will always be the most affordable option. This Amazon Basics case is ideal for budget travelers, Griffiths says: “In my experience, it’s rare to find a case that costs under $100 that can compete with more expensive brands. I was surprised by how thick and sturdy the suitcase feels — it has a nice thud when you knock against the exterior.” As well as being thick, the exterior is  also scratch resistant , and the case also has a well-designed handle, smoothly rolling wheels, handles for comfort, and a built-in lock. The warranty is where this bag falls slightly short, though (and may explain the cheaper price tag): It’s only a three-year limited warranty that protects against defects in materials and workmanship.

Best lightweight hard-side suitcase

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 36 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Five-year manufacturer’s guarantee

The Rimowa Essential line of suitcases was a very close second to Away — more than ten people mentioned the brand in our survey of the best rolling luggage — but it lost out on the top spot due to its price. This suitcase is less durable than the classic aluminum version, but it shares a long history: Rimowa was the first brand to release a polycarbonate suitcase in 2000, so it has had more than 20 years to perfect its design. And it’s a great mix of durability and weight: This carry-on is more than a pound lighter than Away’s Bigger Carry-On.

Owners we spoke with say the wheels glide through the airport like a dream. There’s a manufacturer’s guarantee of five years if you remember to register your product when purchasing it (otherwise, it only lasts for two). Even in those five years, the warranty only applies “if the usability of the product is considerably adversely affected by a material or manufacturing fault already present at the time of hand-over (defect),” the brand says. Breaks caused by “abrasion, improper use, faulty operation, or externally occurring forces” like cracks, breaks, and scratches caused in flight are not covered. There’s a lot of fine print with Rimowa, so I suggest looking into it before you purchase.

Best aluminium hard-side suitcase

Material: Aluminum hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity: 35 liters | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Aluminum cases are as durable as a hard-side case gets — they’re less likely to crack and usually use clamps instead of a zip (which can fall apart at the seams, burst, or even be slashed open). Several travelers I chatted with recommended the Rimowa case in aluminum for this reason. However, it costs well over $1,000 and doesn’t really do much beyond what this Away — which is half the price — does. The aluminum Away carry-on is similar to the polycarbonate one in many respects, from its great-quality handles and wheels to its ample storage space. One major difference is the lock, though: It’s still TSA-approved, but has the lock code on more secure clamps rather than a zipper. Travel writer Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon , who travels every single week for work, calls it her “work horse.”

Best hard-side suitcase for overpackers

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 49 - 61 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

I’ve included this case for its simply ingenious weight indicator. If you’re an overpacker, it takes a lot of the stress out of checking a bag. The indicator is activated when you lift the case, and a red mark will appear if the luggage weighs over 50 pounds — saving you from an unexpected fee at the airport. (This is especially important as the bag has an additional zipper that allows it to expand a couple of inches for squeezing an extra potentially heavy few bits inside.) Other great features include a built-in laundry and shoe bag, as well as several other pockets that help keep things organized and a TSA-approved lock. “They’ve really thought of everything,” says travel blogger Ciara Johnson.

Best hard-side suitcase for underpackers

I first learned about this teeny-tiny hard-side case while researching the best  personal-item-size luggage . It came recommended by  Jasmine Anderson  and  Natasha Wilson , travel agents and co-hosts of the podcast  Travel Fly Sexy , as well as packing expert  Lauren Kelly .   They all praise its snap-off spinner wheels that can slide miraculously into the cruelest of budget-airline baggage sizers. (“Frontier lately is charging people for wheels and handles sticking out of the sizers,” says Kelly. “That means $100 extra for each leg of the trip.”) Measuring 18 by 14 by eight inches, the suitcase’s rectangular shape maximizes space and allows you to use packing cubes: “I have put a laptop and a week’s worth of clothes in the Take Off,” says Anderson. Kelly agrees that “it will give you the most packing space if your goal is a weeklong trip where you pack a personal item only.” The suitcase comes with a small bag to put its wheels in while your bag is being sized by airline staff; you can also just stash them in your pockets. And yes, it will slide right under the plane seat in front of you, which means no competing for overhead bin space.

Best hard-side suitcase set for families

For families, a suitcase set is the most economical way to go. Antler makes one of Strategist senior editor Ailbhe Malone’s favorites: She’s been traveling with them for two years. “The wheels are so smooth that I can pull the suitcase with just a finger if I need to (helpful when trying to carry a folded-up stroller and a baby in a sling through an airport),” says Malone. “The grip on the handle is extremely comfortable, and it pops up easily.” As for storage, the Clifton set is designed to slot inside each other (Russian doll style), meaning “it’s easy to store three suitcases in a small house.” Malone also appreciates the various interior pockets, and mesh compartment for dirty laundry. “I recently took the medium suitcase and the cabin suitcase on a trip from London to Hungary to Romania,” says Malone. “There was enough space for everything my family needed for a week (including the baby bed linens that our Airbnb didn’t provide).”

Luggage should be sturdy and functional. Practicality aside, aesthetics are a top priority for many travelers — and understandably so. Just like the clothes you wear, you want the bags you carry to look put-together and intentional. A matching suitcase set can also be nice for couples and families traveling together, and it can be easier to spot on a baggage carousel.

That being said, you don't have to spend a fortune on matching luggage. We tested hundreds of pieces of luggage and researched many more to narrow down the best affordable luggage sets. Amazon basics hardside luggage set.

This wallet-friendly set stood out in our luggage tests for capacity, durability, maneuverability, and appearance.

There's also a three-piece set, but it's slightly over $200.

If you're in the market for affordable luggage, look no further than Amazon. The mega retailer's own brand, Amazon Basics, has some pretty impressive pieces . We tested the carry-on from this two-piece hardside set and found it adequately spacious, considering the compact size. It fit all items on our packing list without having to unzip the expander. But it was nice to have this option, as it adds 15 percent more space.

The suitcase maneuvered surprisingly well on hard floors, carpet, and outdoor terrains, rolling over bumps and handling tight turns like a champ. Made of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a type of thermoplastic), it held up well during our durability tests — which involved shoving it off a table and whacking it with a bat. We're also big fans of the sleek, simple design. This luggage set comes with the carry-on and a large 28-inch checked suitcase. In the end, we think it's an undoubtedly great value.

Best Softside

American tourister fieldbrook xlt 4 piece set.

All four pieces are crafted from a lightweight yet sturdy textile with reinforced corners for extra durability.

They don't expand, and the two-wheeled suitcases aren't spinners.

For those partial to softside luggage, we recommend the highly rated, unexpectedly affordable American Tourister Fieldbrook XLT Set . It comes with four pieces, including a checked suitcase, a carry-on, a "boarding bag" (that you can use as a personal item), and a rolling duffel. All pieces are made of lightweight yet sturdy 600-denier polyester with reinforced corners for extra durability.

Though they don't expand, softside luggage is often easier to stuff full and zip closed when packed to the brim than the hardside variety. The rolling pieces aren't spinners, but they have "inline skate" wheels that promise smooth maneuvering over various surfaces. Considering this set is under $100 and backed by a 10-year warranty, it's an incredible deal.

These sturdy, crush-resistant suitcases have smooth spinner wheels and come in over 40 colors.

Some colors might show scuffs more than others.

If you prefer hardside luggage , you might like this set from Travelhouse. It comes with a carry-on, a medium checked suitcase, and a large checked suitcase. Each piece is made of ABS, and you can choose from over 40 colors. While the material is generally durable, and the rigid sides will protect your belongings from being crushed, scuffs might be more visible on some of the lighter hues.

Inside are divided compartments, pockets, pouches, and compression straps for keeping your belongings organized and secure. All three suitcases are spinners, with four wheels that self-align and glide smoothly and silently over floors, carpets, and sidewalks. They have telescoping handles with three heights, and the carry-on has two side hooks for a purse or backpack. All things considered, the set is more than reasonably priced.

Most Durable

Coolife spinner trolley suitcase set.

The hard yet flexible shells resists dents, while the textured exteriors prevent and conceal scratches.

The carry-on isn't expandable, but the checked suitcase is.

Coolife stands out for durability. We tested the brand's carry-on and were impressed by how well the hard shell stood up to wear and tear — and even rough and tumbling. There were no dents or marks whatsoever after hitting it multiple times with a bat and shoving it off a table. The ABS and polycarbonate exterior seemed slightly flexible, which may have helped absorb the blows, and its textured finish helps prevent and conceal scratches.

The spinner design rolls smoothly on all four wheels and glides up and down bumps and curves on two. This two-piece luggage set also comes with a 28-inch checked suitcase. The 20-inch carry-on doesn't expand like the bigger bag does. Still, we found the carry-on plenty spacious, and the zippers closed without a fuss even when packed full.

Best Lightweight

Both pieces are each under 10 pounds, but they're still durable with easy-to-maneuver wheels.

None of the suitcases expand, and they don't come in black.

If the goal is to pack light and avoid overweight baggage fees, lightweight luggage will set you off on the right foot. We like this set from Duklap. It comes with three hardside suitcases: a carry-on, a mid-sized checked, and a large checked. They're all lighter than average, with the largest weighing under nine pounds and the smallest just over five pounds.

Each suitcase has four 360-degree rotating spinner wheels, a telescoping handle, and heavy-duty zippers. Inside are various organizational features, like zippered compartments, compression straps, and pockets. The set doesn't come in black (which tends to be a top choice for luggage), but the available colors are neutral yet chic. For well under $200, the value is undeniable.

Long Vacation Luggage Set

The suitcases don't expand, but the weekender does.

If aesthetics are a high priority for luggage (beyond having it match), you might like this striking set from Long Vacation. This luggage collection stands out for its attractive yet not too over-the-top design. There are six colorways available, including neutrals and punchy hues with contrasting trims, as well as a couple of modern tonal options.

You'll get six pieces in total, including four suitcases, a weekender bag, and a toiletry case. The hardside suitcases have ABS exteriors, and the other two pieces are water-repellent nylon. Standout features include zippered pockets, interior dividers, TSA combination locks, and a trolley sleeve on the weekender. Just a heads up, the weekender is expandable, but the suitcases aren't. Considering how much is included and the two-year warranty, this set is extremely sharply priced.

Best Carry-On

The generously sized carry-on and complementing hard-shell cosmetics case rival higher-end luggage.

You may have to consolidate your items, since the cosmetic case might count as a personal item.

If you're looking for matching carry-on luggage for solo trips or business travel, Somago might be your best bet. This two-piece set includes a 22-inch hardside suitcase and a complementing 14-inch cosmetic case that attaches to the handle of the carry-on. Made of durable polypropylene, both have a textrued, scratch-resistant finish.

They're also notably lightweight — the suitcase is five and a half pounds, and the cosmetic case is just over two pounds.
