  • Our top picks for travel insurance for the Dominican Republic come from AXA Assistance USA, Seven Corners, and IMG.
  • Your U.S. health insurance won’t work in the Dominican Republic , so it’s especially important to have travel medical and medical evacuation insurance.
  • In addition to medical emergencies, a comprehensive travel insurance policy will also cover trip cancellations or delays, lost baggage, and more.
  • The cost of travel insurance depends on many factors, including your age, the span of your stay, and the type of travel coverage you want.
  • To find the best insurance for your trip to the Dominican Republic, we recommend using an online comparison tool . This will allow you to compare multiple coverage options and quotes at once so you can find the best deal.

Our top picks for the best dominican republic travel insurance

  • AXA Assistance USA: Best for Full Coverage
  • Seven Corners: Best Value for a Robust Coverage
  • IMG: Best Rated for Travel Delay

AXA Assistance USA

Seven corners.

Though travel insurance isn’t required for stays in the country, purchasing coverage is definitely worth it because it provides added peace of mind both before and during your trip. For instance, if your trip gets canceled or delayed, you may be on the hook for non-refundable costs without travel insurance to help you out.

Likewise, if you have a health emergency or medical conditions flare up during your stay, travel coverage may pay for your medical expenses so you don’t have to come up with extra cash yourself.

Because crime is a risk on some parts of the island , travel insurance plans with theft coverage may also come in handy.

Best for Full Coverage

Why we like it.

  • High coverage limits in every category. Extremely comprehensive
  • Includes identity theft coverage & non-medical evacuation coverage
  • CFAR coverage reimburses 75% of prepaid travel expenses
  • Coverage cannot be extended unlike other plans
  • Medical limit is lower than other cheaper plans, but still sufficient

Best Value for a Robust Coverage

  • Offers coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Money-back guarantee
  • Cancellation & Interruption coverage standard
  • Covers action sports & equipment
  • Cancel for any reason not included standard
  • Must meet waiver for pre-existing conditions to be covered

Best Rated for Travel Delay

  • Purchase your plan up until one day before you depart
  • Generous limits for trip delays, emergency evacuation, and more
  • Pre-existing condition waiver available if purchased within 20 days of initial trip deposit
  • 24/7 emergency travel assistance included
  • Coronavirus-related medical expenses covered
  • Plan gets notably more expensive with age

According to official Squaremouth data , the average cost of insurance for the Dominican Republic is around $175 for trips costing over $3,000.

Based on our own sales figures over the past year, the average cost of travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is $143.77 for a 12-day vacation.

For a basic travel insurance plan with medical and medical evacuation coverage, you can purchase a policy for as little as $1 per day. For more comprehensive coverage, we found a policy costs around $8 to $11 per day.

To help you better understand how much travel insurance will cost for your trip to the Dominican Republic, we got quotes from four popular insurance providers.

We used these details for our quotes:

  • Age: 35 years old
  • Destination: Dominican Republic
  • Trip Length: 7 days
  • Trip cost: $2,000

In the table below, you can see our price quotes from four providers for basic travel insurance coverage.

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

If you want a more comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, you can expect to pay a bit more from your policy. Our quotes shown in the table below show that this type of coverage typically costs around $8 to $11 per day.

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Travel insurance plans should cover an array of potential issues you may face during your stay. Consider these types of coverage when purchasing insurance for travel to this tropical paradise.

Travel medical insurance

Travel medical insurance picks up the costs when you need medical treatment during your trip, and most plans include emergency care for COVID-19 . This type of insurance is essential because the country doesn’t accept U.S. health insurance , preventing things like X-rays and exams from adding extra to your trip cost.

Keep in mind that many policies don’t offer coverage for pre-existing conditions , so you need to select an insurance company that does when you have a high risk of health-related issues occurring.

Medical evacuation insurance

Compared to the United States, medical facilities in the Dominican Republic are often lacking. This means if you need medical treatment that medical professionals on the island can’t provide, you may incur large bills for evacuation on top of your trip cost.

For example, suppose you have a pre-existing condition like heart problems and need emergency surgery that’s not available on the island. In that case, this medical evacuation coverage handles the costs of moving you to the nearest facility that can help.

Trip delay insurance

If you’re getting to the island via a common carrier like an airline, trip delay insurance reimburses you the costs for those postponements. For instance, if inclement weather delays your departure, trip delay insurance covers the cost of non-refundable airline tickets plus the bill for your additional hotel stay so you’re not out extra money.

Trip cancellation insurance

If you must cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, trip cancellation insurance provides financial coverage. Reasons for covered cancellations typically include emergency situations or legal issues only, but you can purchase coverage that handles cancellation for any reason.

Most policies, however, only cover you in cases of terrorist attacks, illnesses that require hospitalization or the death of someone traveling with you. Other examples where trip cancellation may kick in include losing your job or getting called for jury duty. If you want coverage for canceling your trip for any reason at all, we recommend getting cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance .

Trip interruption insurance

If you’ve already paid for accommodations and travel and those expenses are non-refundable, trip interruption insurance offers peace of mind should emergencies occur. This coverage handles costs associated with having to return from your trip early, refunding you for prepaid lodging and travel costs.

For example, if you have to evacuate due to an incoming hurricane or storm, this coverage helps make up for the lost part of your trip.

Baggage insurance

Lost, damaged or stolen luggage can ruin your trip, but baggage insurance covers you when this occurs. For example, if you’re waiting for your luggage at the airport carousel and it never arrives, baggage insurance pays you for the cost of items inside the bag up to a certain point.

Choosing the best travel insurance for your trip to the Dominican Republic depends on multiple factors, including:

  • The regions of the country you will be staying in.
  • The types of accommodations you will be using, such as hotels or hostels.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions you might have.
  • The types of activities you intend to partake in.

Beyond those considerations, you’ll also need to account for your budget and any additional protections you’d like to have included.

Here are some quick tips to help you choose the best travel insurance .

Lay out plans in advance

To get the right travel insurance plan, you must provide a clear itinerary for the insurer. Factors like your mode of travel and how many carriers you use may drive up costs.

Pick plans that suit your needs

You know what you need better than anyone, so look for travel insurance plans that fit with your lifestyle. For instance, if you have pre-existing conditions, choose a plan that includes coverage for those medical emergencies.

Shop around for good deals

If you have lots of time before you leave for your trip, shop around for the best travel insurance plan prices. Compare each plan against the others, including how much they cover and any limitations on coverage, to get the best travel deals for you.

This table gives an overview of what to expect when traveling to the Dominican Republic.

Do I need a visa or passport for the Dominican Republic?

Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay and have one page for an entry stamp. Whether you need a visa or not, however, depends on the length of your stay. If you plan on leaving the country within 30 days, you don’t need a tourist visa to visit the Dominican Republic.

COVID-19 restrictions

As of November 2023, there are no COVID-19 restrictions to travel to or from the Dominican Republic.

Is it safe to travel to the Dominican Republic?

Travel to the Dominican Republic is safe for the most part, but you do need to watch out for some possible risks during your stay on the island.

Do I need travel insurance for the Dominican Republic?

Buying travel insurance for the Dominican Republic isn’t required. Purchasing a policy is a good idea, however, due to opportunistic theft in some areas, dangerous road conditions, and the fact that medical services and facilities are limited.

How much is travel insurance for the Dominican Republic?

Travel insurance for trips to the island depends on a variety of factors, including your age and the length of your stay. For a 35-year-old traveling to the Dominican Republic for a week with a total trip cost of $2,000, we found that you can get a basic travel insurance policy for as little as $1 per day. For more comprehensive protection, you can typically expect to pay between $8 and $11 per day .

Does the Dominican Republic offer complimentary insurance to visitors?

In the past, the Dominican Republic provided all travelers with complimentary insurance. As of November 2023, however, the Dominican government no longer offers free medical or travel coverage when you visit.

Is Dominican Republic travel insurance worth it?

Yes, travel insurance is a good idea for numerous reasons. This coverage helps you recoup losses when emergencies occur while you’re on your island getaway so you’re not left with surprise expenses after your holiday ends.

Are health insurance and travel insurance for the Dominican Republic the same thing?

It depends on the travel insurance coverage that you purchase. Most travel insurance plans, however, cover health-related expenses and medical evacuation as well as travel-related ones like delayed, interrupted, or canceled trips.

Dominican Republic Travel Insurance – Cost and Comparison

Home | Travel | The Caribbean | Dominican Republic Travel Insurance – Cost and Comparison

It may not be mandatory to have travel insurance for the Dominican Republic to enter the country, but you certainly won’t regret purchasing DR travel insurance coverage, especially if you experience any health problems or travel mishaps.

Dominican Republic, best travel insurance to Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic used to offer a free health plan with COVID-19 coverage to visiting tourists, but now that this health plan scheme has ended, it is more important than ever to have travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage .

If you’re wondering, the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is by far Heymondo . Their plans offer the highest amount of coverage for the most affordable price, and best of all, you will never have to pay out-of-pocket medical fees because Heymondo pays your medical expenses upfront for you.

Do I need travel insurance for the Dominican Republic?

Although having DR travel insurance isn’t one of the entry requirements for the Dominican Republic , buying travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is smart because you’ll avoid paying for any medical fees or extra travel expenses out of pocket.

Since the free health plan for tourists is not available anymore, having Dominican Republic travel insurance is the only way to ensure that you’ll have health coverage while you’re visiting DR.

How much is Dominican Republic travel insurance?

To help you choose DR travel insurance and understand how much it costs, I’ve compared travel insurance Dominican Republic quotes by using the example of a 30-year-old American citizen who is traveling to DR for one week and whose trip costs $2,500.

*Price used for example.

Best Travel Insurance for the Dominican Republic

While all four DR travel insurance plans have their merits, the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is definitely Heymondo . Heymondo stands out because it offers the highest amount of coverage for the most affordable price and pays travelers’ medical expenses upfront instead of having them file a claim.

1. Heymondo , the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic

Heymondo is the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic and the best travel medical insurance for the Dominican Republic. It offers outstanding coverage in all medical- and travel-related coverage categories. Even with the highest amount of coverage, the Heymondo Top plan is still the most affordable of all the Dominican Republic travel insurance plans I compared, giving it the best coverage-to-price ratio.

Heymondo, best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic

On top of that, Heymondo is the only DR travel insurance company that pays your medical expenses directly and upfront instead of making you pay out of pocket and then file a claim to get reimbursed. Heymondo’s Top plan also offers excellent coverage for COVID-19 testing and treatment abroad, and you can even add electronics or adventure sports coverage to the plan.

Heymondo’s only drawback is that it does not cover travelers who are over the age of 69, so if you are an older traveler, IMG or Trawick may be better suited for you.

Currently, we have an annual travel insurance policy since it’s the most convenient and cheapest option for frequent travelers. If you do decide to purchase your travel insurance to the Dominican Republic from Heymondo, you can save 5% on their policies with the discount link below.

2. World Nomads , a reliable DR travel insurance

Planning an adventurous, adrenaline-filled trip to the Dominican Republic? World Nomads has the perfect Dominican Republic travel insurance for you since their Standard plan includes Adventure Sports and Activities coverage for everything from archery to ziplining.

WorldNomads, Dominican Republic travel insurance

The World Nomads Standard plan offers solid coverage in all medical- and travel-related coverage categories and, like any of the best travel insurance plans, provides coverage for COVID-19 treatment abroad.

One limitation of the Standard plan, however, is its coverage-to-price ratio; you can get similar or higher coverage for half the price with Heymondo . Also, since the Standard plan doesn’t cover travelers over the age of 69, if you are an older traveler, an IMG or Trawick DR travel insurance plan may be better for you.

3. IMG , a good travel health insurance Dominican Republic

An excellent choice for travel insurance to the Dominican Republic is IMG , whose plans provide a high amount of coverage in both travel- and medical-related categories.

IMG, travel insurance to the Dominican Republic

The iTravelInsured Travel SE plan offers the highest amount of Trip Interruption coverage of all the plans I compared and even includes Cancel for Work Reasons coverage, so you can cancel your trip if you are unexpectedly terminated or transferred. This plan is also great for older travelers since it covers travelers who are aged 70 and up.

If you are on a budget, though, IMG may not be the best plan for you, since it is the most expensive DR travel insurance plan. Just keep in mind that you can get similar or even better coverage for a more affordable price with Heymondo .

4. Trawick , a cheap travel insurance Dominican Republic

Trawick is a fantastic option if you’re looking for cheap travel insurance for the Dominican Republic , particularly if you’re a senior. Their Safe Travels Explorer plan covers travelers over the age of 70 and offers coverage for COVID-19 treatment abroad.

Trawick International, cheap travel insurance for the Dominican Republic

The Safe Travels Explorer plan also provides good coverage for Trip Interruption and Trip Cancellation and is relatively affordably priced.

However, this plan does have the lowest coverage for Emergency Medical Expenses, Evacuation and Repatriation, and Baggage Loss of all the travel insurance for the Dominican Republic plans I compared, so if you want better coverage for an even more affordable price, Heymondo is your best bet.

What should my travel insurance to the Dominican Republic cover?

There are so many options for travel insurance for the Dominican Republic that it can be overwhelming to try and choose a plan. To help make it simple, here are the coverage elements that any good travel insurance to the Dominican Republic should include:

  • Emergency medical expenses – you could contract COVID-19, break a bone, or experience food poisoning while you’re traveling. Having DR travel insurance with emergency medical coverage means that quarantine fees, treatment expenses, and prescription medications will be all covered, so you won’t be stuck paying for expensive medical bills on your own.
  • Evacuation and repatriation – accidents and illnesses don’t always happen in the most convenient locations. If you injure yourself seriously in a remote area and need to be airlifted to the nearest hospital or fall gravely ill and require transportation to your home country for treatment, evacuation, and repatriation coverage will reimburse you for the (very expensive) cost of transportation fees.
  • Trip cancellation, interruption, and delay – life doesn’t always go according to plan; you may be forced to cancel or postpone your trip due to inclement weather, sudden death in the family, or even jury duty. However, just because you need to change your plans doesn’t mean you have to lose out on the money you paid for your trip. Trip cancellation, interruption, and delay coverage allow you to recoup all of your pre-paid travel expenses.
  • Baggage loss – even if your bag gets lost, stolen, or delayed, you still need to have a toothbrush and some clothes to wear. Avoid having to buy all new toiletries and clothes with your own money by purchasing Dominican Republic travel insurance with baggage loss coverage.

Is DR travel insurance worth it?

Even if it’s not mandatory, having Dominican Republic travel insurance is worth it, because, without the free tourist health plan, visitors have no health coverage if they don’t buy DR travel insurance . Still, it’s one of the best Latin America countries you can visit .

Don’t get caught without medical coverage; make sure you buy the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic , Heymondo . Not only will you get excellent coverage for an affordable price, but you can also save even more money with our reader discount.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to the Dominican

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for the Dominican Republic. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in the Dominican Republic can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Always be careful when consuming alcoholic beverages, and when in doubt, avoid spirits altogether.

Visit the U.S. Department of State website for up-to-date information on travel advisory levels and safety information for travelers to the Dominican Republic.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for the Dominican Republic?

You don’t need travel insurance to go to the Dominican Republic. And, the government offers medical coverage to travelers, should they need healthcare. While this may give you peace of mind, you will still have to pay out of pocket for any costs incurred from travel delays, cancellations or interruptions . Having a good travel insurance policy can help you avoid these sunken costs.

A trip to the Dominican Republic might be full of activities such as water sports, hiking and exploring the historic Zona Colonial. Accidents and emergencies are impossible to predict, so we recommend buying a travel health insurance policy with a high maximum limit in case you need medical treatment.

Theft and robbery are a possibility in urban areas. With a travel insurance plan, you can claim back the cost of any damaged or stolen valuables. The amount of insurance options can be overwhelming, but the following sections highlight some coverage options you should consider for your trip.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason coverage is an add-on available in most travel insurance policies. It allows travelers to cancel their trip for reasons usually not included in standard cancellation coverage.

International travel plans can always fall through due to unforeseen events, such as personal and familial obligations. The ability to cancel your trip without fear of losing money because of exclusions is a great benefit and will help you feel more secure on your vacation.

Gear Theft Protection

Gear theft protection typically covers the cost of replacing or repairing personal belongings stolen or damaged because of covered events, such as theft, fire, vandalism and accidents. Coverage may extend to several types of gear, including cameras, lenses, sports equipment, audio/video equipment and other valuables.

Your insurance policy may have distinct levels of coverage based on the insured trip cost and the policyholder’s specific needs. Some policies will have a deductible, the amount the policyholder must pay out of pocket before the insurance coverage kicks in.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Medical emergency insurance, also known as travel medical insurance or travel health insurance, is insurance coverage that provides financial protection and assistance in the event of a medical emergency while traveling. It will cover the costs of unexpected medical bills that may arise during your trip, such as hospitalization, doctor visits, prescriptions and emergency medical treatments.

Emergency medical evacuation, also called medical repatriation, is a specific element of medical emergency insurance. It covers the cost of transporting you to the nearest appropriate medical facility. It will also offer coverage should you need to return to your home country for medical treatment if you can’t get treated for a serious illness or injury on your trip.

Both medical emergency insurance and emergency medical evacuation are crucial components of travel insurance, particularly for international travel. Accessing medical care in the Dominican Republic can be difficult, especially if you are far away from urban areas. Coverage gives you peace of mind and financial protection if you encounter unexpected medical expenses while on vacation.

Rental Car Protection

Your travel policy may include rental car protection. If not, it’s coverage you can add. It supplies coverage for damage, theft or loss of a rental car while traveling.

Rental car protection in travel insurance can offer an alternative to buying separate rental car insurance from a rental company, which can be quite expensive. However, it’s important to note that rental car protection within travel insurance policies may have certain limitations and exclusions. For example, coverage may not apply if you were driving recklessly or under the influence of alcohol.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance is a type of travel insurance that delivers financial protection should you cancel your trip because of unforeseen events. It will reimburse you for non-refundable expenses you’ve already paid or are compelled to pay if your trip gets canceled or interrupted.

Some commonly covered reasons for trip cancellation or interruption include:

  • Sudden illness or injury that will prevent you from traveling
  • Death of a family member or travel companion
  • Natural disasters that create significant risks or make your destination inaccessible
  • A travel supplier, such as an airline or cruise company, goes bankrupt or ceases operations, resulting in the cancellation of your trip

How Much Does the Dominican Republic Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance will vary across insurance providers, and finding the right plan for your trip can be challenging. The table below compares the cheapest insurance quotes from five providers. The quotes are based on a single traveler, aged 30, from New York, embarking on a week-long trip that costs $1,900.

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Dominican Republic. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Dominican Republic for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

The plans above range significantly in price. Insured Nomads offers the cheapest policy with good medical coverage ($250,000) but no baggage protection. It includes an optional benefit for adventure and water sports suitable for an active traveler.

The other plans all offer up to $500 for baggage protection . Allianz and Travel Safe also offer rental car protection as an optional add-on, this will increase the price of the policy though. All the plans offer high medical coverage in the range of $110,000 to $135,000, except for Allianz, which supplies only $60,000.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for the Dominican Republic?

Before you buy travel insurance, you should compare quotes from different insurance companies to get the best price and coverage. Consider providers that offer more affordable plans if you are on a lower budget .

When comparing quotes, consider the coverage limits for medical expenses and personal effects, the deductible amount, any exclusions or limitations, and additional benefits or services offered by each plan. This will help you decide on the travel insurance plan that best suits your vacation.

As with any insurance, it is important to carefully review the policy terms, coverage limits, exclusions, and claim procedures, before purchasing an insurance policy.

Dominican Republic Safety Tips

Staying safe on your vacation is the most important thing, and the following travel tips will give you an idea of what to expect in the Dominican Republic. You can find more travel advice from the U.S. Department of State website and local news outlets .

Crime and Safety

Most travelers encounter no problems when traveling to the Dominican Republic and crime rates have decreased in recent years . Travel Advisories state that resorts and popular tourist areas, like Punta Cana, are better policed than the cities, so you may feel much safer there.

However, muggings and robberies are not unheard of, particularly in Santo Domingo. To protect yourself and your belongings, avoid going out late at night and ensure your accommodation is secure.

When you’re out in the country, be sure not to keep your valuables on display as this could make you a target for thieves. Be careful when carrying cash. Flaunting your Dominican Pesos could incentivize muggers, so be discreet with any money you take.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

The Dominican Republic has so much to do for all types of travelers. If you plan any day trips or excursions, choose operators with positive reviews and a good reputation. Look for companies that prioritize safety, have licensed guides and follow proper safety protocols. If you are staying in a hotel, the front desk should be able to give you recommendations.

It would also be beneficial to learn some Spanish. You can get by with English in tourist areas, but English isn’t spoken widely nationally. Spanish is the Dominican Republic’s official language, so knowing a few key phrases will help you converse with locals should you need directions or help.

There are no COVID-19 restrictions for U.S. citizens entering the Dominican Republic. You do not need to supply proof of a COVID vaccination or a negative COVID test to enter the country. If you are concerned about COVID-19, the Dominican authorities do have vaccinations available for U.S. residents, so you can get vaccinated when you arrive.

For more information about COVID-19 regulations, visit the US embassy website .

The Bottom Line: Is Travel Insurance for a Dominican Republic Vacation Worth It?

When traveling to the Dominican Republic, you should buy travel insurance. Having good coverage for any trip is always worth it , as it protects you from losing money if you have an accident or trip interruption.

The Dominican Republic has certain safety concerns, so having an adequate insurance plan will allow you to enjoy your vacation and not worry about sunken costs or lost valuables.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in the Dominican Republic?

Do i need travel insurance for the dominican republic.

Travel insurance is not needed to enter the Dominican Republic. The authorities offer complimentary insurance covering medical treatment for cases such as infection, along with any costs incurred from interruptions because of an infection.

While this benefits travelers, having a good travel insurance policy will also allow you to claim compensation for any interruptions on your trip and supplies much more coverage for a wider range of medical scenarios.

You can read more about how to claim compensation here.

How do I get a tourist card for the Dominican Republic?

You can obtain your tourist card digitally via VisaHQ or you can get it from the airport upon your arrival. You will be able to pay for the card in U.S. dollars as well.

Do I need both travel insurance and health insurance?

Health insurance usually only covers regular medical care in your home country and almost nothing when you get care outside U.S. borders. Travel insurance delivers coverage for any medical treatment you receive abroad.

Some health insurance may extend to trips abroad, but it is best to have a travel insurance plan to ensure you are fully covered for your trip.

Do I need to declare pre-existing medical conditions when purchasing travel insurance?

Any pre-existing conditions should be declared to your insurance provider as they may not validate a claim if you haven’t. Most providers will cover these conditions, but it may slightly increase the cost of your policy.

Remember the relevant documents

From April 23rd, 2022, tourists no longer need to present a COVID-19 vaccination card, PCR or antigen test to enter the country.

British citizens visiting the Dominican Republic for tourist purposes do not need a visa. As of April 2018, the tourism entry tax, or tourist card, is no longer collected on entry and will most likely be included in your airfare. You’ll find further information on the Dominican Republic Embassy website .

You will usually be granted a 30-day stay upon arrival, which can be extended to 120 days for a small fee payable when leaving the country.

Hurricane Season

Before booking your holiday to the Dominican Republic, you should know that the weather can often be extreme. Hurricanes may not occur every year, and most visitors experience nothing more than heavy rain storms and higher humidity levels. However, hurricane season runs from June to November, with August and September highlighted as high-risk months. This is something to be aware of before booking.

In most restaurants, bars, and cafes, it is customary to tip, especially in tourist areas. Depending on the service you receive, a general rule is to tip around 10% of the bill, but we recommend listing 15-20% if your service is exceptional. Always tip in the local currency to save money.

Travel Insurance for the Dominican Republic 2023

What is the best travel insurance for the Dominican Republic? If your travel plans include this spectacular tropical paradise and you’re already organizing your trip, it’s very normal to ask yourself this question. Along with booking flights and accommodation, getting travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is the third pillar of preparation for this exciting adventure.

Soon, you’ll be surrounded by crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches, ready to relax and enjoy this much-deserved break. To help you prepare, we’ve created this guide to show you the best international medical policy for this destination, the essential coverage you’ll need, and how to get your insurance for the Dominican Republic easily.

Get your swimsuit ready, you’re almost in this amazing beach paradise!

Why get travel insurance for the Dominican Republic

When we travel abroad, everything changes and depending on the country we are in, we may face healthcare of dubious quality and medical centres where care comes at a disproportionate cost. As you can see, having travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is essential to guarantee quality care in the best centres of the country, that will be completely free for you.

A stumble that turns into a visit to the doctor for a sprained ankle, an accident when you climb above 3,000 meters in your ascent to Pico Duarte, a Dominican cuisine dish that doesn’t sit well with you, the not-so-uncommon bite of a mosquito that can carry dengue or malaria, or any other incident that would be a visit to the doctor with no significance at home (fever, infection, allergy, discomfort…), without the best insurance to travel to the Dominican Republic, could turn into a bill of thousands of euros or a visit to a medical centre of dubious quality.

But in addition to health issues, a good international medical policy should cover all aspects that may arise during a trip . Therefore, thanks to your travel insurance to the Dominican Republic, you will also be covered for situations such as violent theft, problems with your luggage, delays, or, if you decide so, cancellation of your trip in case something prevents you from carrying it out.

In summary, getting travel insurance to the Dominican Republic is an essential step so you can focus solely on enjoying it, knowing that you will be in the best hands if something happens to you.

What is the best medical travel insurance for the Dominican Republic?

After explaining the purpose of a travel policy, it is evident that having travel insurance for the Dominican Republic is essential.

In the next section of this guide to getting your travel insurance for the Dominican Republic, we will detail the characteristics that your policy should have.

IATI Total Comfort and IATI Star are the best policies for this trip. If your country of residence is within the European Union your best ally for this trip is IATI Total Comfort . If your country of residence is outside the European Union we recommend IATI Star. They take into consideration many more aspects and protect you in cases that may occur on a trip like this, such as problems with your luggage or theft. You will travel with serenity and if something happens, you can continue your journey.

What a good travel insurance to the Dominican Republic should have: Characteristics

Good travel insurance covers the specific needs of the destination you are visiting. Therefore, the policy you used for your trip to Paris, is not enough for this trip.

All of these features, and many more, are included in the IATI Total Comfort and IATI Star travel insurances for the Maldives. So, if you are already aware of the importance of having the best policy for this trip, don’t wait any longer and get it now.

Free 24-hour assistance

You are heading to the Caribbean to enjoy your trip 24 hours a day . That is why we will be by your side 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whether it’s night-time or early morning, whenever you need us, you can contact us to resolve any incidents that arise during your trip. In addition, if you do it by phone, we will reimburse you for the cost of the international call when you provide us with the receipt, so you do not have to bear that expense.

Extensive medical assistance coverage in the Dominican Republic

As you have seen, the cost of quality medical care in this country is high , and many causes may lead you to need it. That’s why we’ve provided the IATI Total Comfort travel insurance for the Maldives with up to €10,000,000 to cover any medical situation you may face and IATI Star with up to €1.000.000 to cover any health situation. Additionally, you will always receive this attention in the best medical centers and hospitals in the country.

With up to half a million euros allocated exclusively to medical expenses, you ensure the best available assistance in the country.

Adventure sports in the Dominican Republic

If you have chosen this tropical paradise as your next destination, you probably already know that it offers a lot more plans than lying in the sun on its idyllic beaches. Rafting down the rapids in Jarabacoa, canyoning in Jimenoa, hiking routes up to the 3,087 meters high Pico Duarte, cycling routes through the interior, surfing around the entire island, or snorkelling and diving up to 40 meters to enjoy the country’s underwater landscapes are some of the activities you should not miss.

boats on a river in the dominican republic

All these activities have something in common: they are not covered by most travel insurance policies for the Dominican Republic, and different companies tend to not help you if something unexpected happens while you enjoy these activities. (Yes, even snorkelling just a few meters from the shore requires an international policy.)

Thanks to the Adventure Sports Coverage, you can live these and many more experiences knowing that they will be fully covered by your travel insurance to the Dominican Republic.

Without deductibles, you won’t have to pay anything out of your pocket

When it comes to purchasing travel insurance for the Dominican Republic, it’s important to always read the fine print. This is where many companies hide “traps” to reduce costs, such as deductibles. In the case of a 100 euro deductible, it means that every time you need medical assistance, you’ll have to pay the first 100 euros yourself. This expense can grow during your trip depending on whether you require continuous care.

At IATI, none of our policies have deductibles , and we guarantee to cover your medical expenses from the first cent when you travel with your insurance for the Dominican Republic.

No need for advanced money for medical assistance

Another common practice in private medical insurance policies covering overseas travel is to require you to pay for the necessary medical care and then go through a tedious process to obtain reimbursement of the costs. This means that, if you need thousands of euros in medical care, you will have to pay for it out of your pocket and thus completely undermine the experience of this great trip.

If you have your IATI Total Comfort or IATI Star as your travel insurance for the Dominican Republic, you don’t have to worry about this. The process is simple: when you need any type of medical assistance contact us and we will direct you to the nearest best-equipped centre to handle your case. When you arrive there, they’ll be waiting for you, and we’ll take care of covering the costs of your visit, including any tests, hospital stays, or medications prescribed by the specialist.

If you’re unable to contact us before receiving medical assistance due to an emergency, you simply need to provide us with the relevant medical reports and receipts, and we’ll reimburse you as soon as possible.

Lost luggage and theft included

IATI Total Comfort and IATI Star are the best travel insurances for the Dominican Republic because, in addition to its extensive medical coverage, it takes into account other aspects that may arise during your trip.

You and your luggage are going to the Dominican Republic, and that’s why we’ll also take care of protecting your belongings . Thanks to your IATI Total Comfort insurance, you will have up to 1,500 euros of coverage for cases such as robbery with violence or problems with your luggage. With IATI Star you will also be protected in such cases and you will have up to 2,500 euros of coverage.

Finder travel insurance value awards winner

Fast Cover is the winner of the 2023 Finder Awards for the 'Travel insurance - Value' category. How? We compared the average prices of 28 international travel insurance policies, and Fast Cover came out on top.

The Dominican Republic travel insurance: Common exclusions

Every travel insurance policy has things you won't be covered for. Common exclusions include:

  • If you purchase cover after the incident has occurred. For example, if you take cover out after you've been injured and need medical attention.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have any major medical conditions, make sure you let your insurer know before taking out a policy. Otherwise you won't be covered for claims related to that condition.
  • You travel despite government travel advice. For example, if you travel to areas that have a warning from Smartraveller, travel insurance may not cover you.
  • Incidents that occur while you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol. For example, if you go out drinking in Punta Cana, get injured and need medical attention, travel insurance won't cover you.
  • Driving vehicles without a licence. Like Australia, you won't be covered for medical costs or personal liability expenses if you drive without a licence in The Dominican Republic.

Will I be covered for COVID-19?

Travel insurance can cover you for COVID-19 in The Dominican Republic. A policy can cover you for the following:

  • Rearrangement costs if you catch the virus and need to change your plans. Lots of comprehensive travel insurance policies let you claim up to $5,000 towards these expenses.
  • Medical costs due to COVID-19. This can include hospital expenses and RATs if you catch COVID-19 while overseas (but you won't be covered for mandatory PCRs).
  • Expenses if you need to isolate. For example, if you catch COVID while you're overseas and need to push back your flight and stay in your accommodation longer.

How do I get cheap travel insurance for The Dominican Republic?

  • Medical only or basic policies will generally be the cheaper policies on the market.
  • Use exclusive deals or promo codes to get a discount.
  • Opt for a higher excess. This will make your policy cheaper but more expensive if you have to claim.
  • Compare across a handful of travel insurers – they're not all the same.
  • Get the most value by buying your policy early. It means you're covered for longer while paying the same price.

When I travel, I don't want to fork out a lot for travel insurance. I always get something above the bare minimum though which usually only covers medical-only expenses. Flight disruptions and delayed luggage are really common, so look for a cheap policy that covers me for these things.

What do I do in emergencies?

For emergencies: call 911 (police), 911 (ambulance) or 911 (fire).

In a medical emergency, call for help and then contact your insurer on their emergency assistance line.

Civil unrest, security risks, threat of terrorist attack and crime are a concern in The Dominican Republic, but you should still be eligible for travel insurance. It won't cover all of these situations but it can help cover medical costs, stolen belongings and much much more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dominican Republic does not offer free healthcare to tourists. Healthcare and emergency medical treatment can be expensive. Although the healthcare in public hospitals is more affordable than private hospitals, it is worth remembering that the standard of medical care on offer can be considered below Western standards.

Some parts of the country have better healthcare facilities than others. The Dominican Republic do have emergency services, but they are not always reliable. Often, utilising a taxi service to get you to medical facilities if you need them can be a better option, even if you need emergency treatment.

The medical facilities across the Dominican Republic are improving, and on a whole, the country’s offering is better than other islands and nations in the Caribbean. Having an appropriate Dominican Republic travel insurance policy with medical coverage can help you receive care in the event of a medical emergency or accident.

The summer months are taken over by the rainy season in most regions of The Dominican Republic. The best time to visit the country is between the months of December-April. This is when the weather is most suitable for holiday goers.

If you are planning on visiting the north of the Dominican Republic, it is best to visit between February and April. When purchasing travel insurance for your trip, ensure you get it in plenty of time in case of trip cancellation or delays.

British citizens traveling to the Dominican Republic for tourism don't need a visa to enter the country. Previously, a tourism entry tax, or tourist card, was collected on arrival, however this fee should now be included in your air fare. If you are unsure whether you have paid this fee, you should contact your airline before travelling to double check.

You will be granted a 30-day stay when you arrive in the Dominican Republic, and this can be extended to 120 days by paying for an extension.

Over the last 60 years the number of Dominican immigrants in the US has grown rapidly. In 1961 after the assassination of the country’s long-time dictator Rafael Trujillo there was political and economic disorder. As a consequence of this the number of Dominican immigrants like dissidents, university students, professors, and many middle-class workers left for the United States. The U.S. embassy enabled this emigration by issuing visas.

New US immigrant insurance

New US Immigrant health insurance

The Trump administration had introduced rules making it mandatory for prospective new US immigrants to show proof of adequate US health insurance while applying for the immigrant visa. The aim of this mandatory US health insurance for immigrants is to reduce the burden on the US hospitals, the overall US health care system and finally on US tax payers by uninsured new immigrants.

At American Visitor insurance we offer immigrant health insurance plans which work well for prospective new US immigrants. After buying this immigrant medical insurance, customers will immediately receive the health insurance policy document by email. Customers can use this immigrant insurance document as proof of US health insurance while applying for the Immigrant visa. Given this rule as well as the very high cost of healthcare in the US, it is strongly recommended to buy medical insurance for new US immigrants.
