Sergio came to Chile to learn Spanish in 2003. He fell in love with the city and with a girl from Santiago, who he came to marry. This relationship enabled him to have a deeper knowledge of the Chilean culture and customs and to adapt some of them such as having the Chilean ‘once’.

His experience with tourism started in his hometown, Sao Paulo, where he volunteered to show foreigners around his city as a way to practice the languages.

Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, is home to half of the country’s population. On this walking tour you will see all the important sites and landmarks in the downtown area.

We begin the tour at your hotel and first bring you to the top of San Cristobal Hill by cable car or “teleférico”.  From here you will have a panoramic view of the entire city of Santiago where your guide will describe the city’s geography and point out the sites to be seen during the walking tour.  We will descend the hill by an open-air funicular that will bring you right into the colorful Bellavista neighborhood with streets lined with lively cafes.

From there we walk by Plaza Italia and stroll through beautiful Florestal Park to reach the Lastarria neighborhood with many tiny shops and cafés.  Our walking tour continues to Santa Lucia Hill, an oasis in the center of Santiago.  Originally named Huelén Hill by the Mapuche Indians, this is where Pedro de Valdivia founded the city in 1541.

We continue to the historic city center visiting the Museum of Fine Arts, Central Market, and Plaza de Armas, Santiago’s main square.  At the plaza, you will see the Cathedral, City Hall, Historic Post Office, and Monument to Chile’s Indigenous People, as well as enter the Museum of National History.

We then pass by the Old Congress Building and Supreme Court and continue onward to La Moneda Palace (The Government House). Afterwards, we will stop by the oldest church in Chile, the San Francisco Church, and visit a handicraft market for souvenir shopping. At the end of the tour, your guide will take you back to your hotel using the city’s modern Metro system for a real local experience.

(1) The order of sites visited may vary depending on your pick up location.

(2) If your hotel is outside the downtown, Providencia or El Golf neighborhoods, the meeting point for this tour is the Sheraton San Cristobal Hotel located at Avenida Santa Maria 1742, Providencia.  In this case, guests must make their own arrangements to arrive at the meeting point.

(3) The summer months (December-March) are hot and sunny in Santiago with daytime temperatures rising to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  The total distance of this walking tour is around 5 to 6 miles.  We encourage guests to wear comfortable walking shoes and to bring a hat and sunscreen.

Dr Ross Anderson

Dr Anderson lives with his wife in a small town near the Lakes District in the north of England. He is a family doctor and spends much of his spare time travelling as an expedition doctor. He has more than 10 years of altitude and travel medicine experience. Previous treks and expeditions have focused on the Himalayas, with others in the Scandinavian Arctic and mountainous areas of Africa. He also enjoys trail running, cycling and open-water swimming.

With the exception of tropical humidity, Chile’s extreme latitudinal span means that the country encompasses nearly all climates. The Andes Mountains, the Pacific and South Pacific Oceans, and the cold Humboldt Current from Peru are all major influences on Chile’s climatic patterns.

Most of northern Chile is desert; the central parts of the country, where the bulk of the country’s population and larger cities are found (including the capital of Santiago), are temperate, humid and suitable for cultivation, similar to the Mediterranean; and southern Chile is a beautiful but largely inhospitable region subject to cold, wet and windy conditions. Temperatures drop and precipitation rises fairly consistently as you move from the dry extreme north towards the humid extreme south.

Moderate daytime temperatures, cold nighttime temperatures and a lack of rain or permanent vegetation typify the arid northern desert. Even along the coast, humidity generally develops only to coastal fogs (garúa) rather than rain.

Central Chile is blessed with temperate Mediterranean conditions, making it a very productive agricultural region for growing grapes, fruits, grains and vegetables. Winters are cool and humid, bringing rains from May to August (especially the wettest months of June and July); spring months see southwesterly winds and clear skies; and summer and autumn months are warm and dry.

Southern Chile is subject to the influence of cyclonic depressions, permanent westerlies and the polar front, causing lower temperatures and abnormally high rainfall. Intense storms and squalls are frequent around Cape Horn.

Average monthly temperatures in the Santiago area range from around 19.5°C (67°F) in the summer (Jan-Feb) to around 7.5°C (45.5°F) in the winter (Jun-Jul).

Patagonia’s southern coastal position leaves it exposed to the intense winds that circle the Antarctic land mass. As such, the climate of Patagonia is unpredictable and it is necessary to be well prepared with good quality clothing. The summer season spanning November to March, experiences day time temperatures of between 8-20 degrees Celsius and in the evenings the temperature can easily reach zero. By Andean standards, the Patagonian Mountains are low in altitude, but they capture virtually all the south-west air borne moisture cladding their summits with snow, and leaving the leeward side, the Patagonian plains, in a severe rain shadow. This makes for some very interesting contrasts in the landscapes.

It is advisable to carry cards which can be used in Automatic Teller Machines. (Cirrus or one of the other international monetary networks attached to the card). Keep cash in lower denominations such as $10 and $20

Travellers cheques and credit cards are not always accepted; it is advisable to check with your leader that the rate offered by the hotel is reasonable.

International Dialing Code

Electricity in Chile is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is C (2 round prong, also known as the standard ‘Euro’ plug). Type L is also widely spread (3 round prong).

Australians can visit Chile for a maximum of 90 days, but it is crucial to obtain a valid visa before your arrival. The application process can take a few weeks, so factor this in when applying for a visa. To apply for a visa, you can complete the online form within 90 days prior to your intended arrival at https://tramites.minrel.gov.cl/.

Passport holders from New Zealand, United Kingdom, United State and Canada do not require a visa for entry up to 90 days. You will however need to show a return or onward ticket.

All other nationalities should check with your nearest embassy or consulate.

When travelling to Chile, you'll receive a tourist card (paper) on arrival at customs. You must keep the card and present it to immigration officials when departing Chile. The tourist card (paper) is also needed to present to tourist accommodation or you will be charged an additional tax of 19%. Our local operators may also request a copy of the tourist card upon arrival.

Over 20% of Chilean territory is part of a National Park . From the northern tip to the extreme south, Chile’s most important aim is to protect and maintain its species of flora and fauna that are of special interest in education, science and hobbies such as birdwatching, photography, stargazing, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and others. Forests, glaciers and salt flats must be protected, because they are home to many endemic species which make each one of these places unique and special, as well as an unforgettable experience for those who visit them.

The National Parks in Chile

1.- Lauca National Park : Lauca is a major attraction in the extreme North of Chile, named World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and characterized by the large variety of fauna that call this Park home. Lake Chungará, the Cotacotani Lagoon and the town of Parinacota are the protagonists of this natural beauty where one can shoot outstanding photos.

2.- Salar de Huasco National Park : This site, a salt flat located in the Chilean high plains, is full of morphologic and natural wonders that make it worth the adventure at more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

Here you will enjoy seeing the majestic Chilean flamingos, whose bright rose colored feathers contrast sharply with the arid magic of the Atacama desert.

3.- Pan de Azúcar National Park : Truly a marvelous costal desert! Located 800 meters (2624 feet) above sea level, this park exists thanks to the dense fog that rises from the coast to the high valleys. This phenomenon, known as the Camanchaca, brings moisture to the cacti and bushes and enriches its flora and fauna.

From here one can visit a colony of Humboldt penguins who inhabit the Pan de Azúcar Island. Also be on the lookout for Culpeo Foxes.

4.- Fray Jorge National Park : Although it seems out of place, this park in the North is more like those found in the South of Chile. It is a humid forest on the coast of the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world.

Magical and mysterious, it’s hard to resist walking through its Valdivian-like forest paths leading to various viewpoints with vivid post card views of the Pacific Ocean and photograph native animals such as the Culpeo fox, the Chungungo, and birds like the Peregrine Falcon.

5.- Huerquehue National Park : this destination has Araucaria forests, eternal snows, lakes and lagoons hidden away in the midst of majestic mountains. This natural sanctuary is an ideal place to camp and escape from the noise of the city.

Its many trails adept for trekking and biking are a wonderland for nature lovers who can relax into the arms of this enchanting place any time of the year.

6.- Villarrica National Park : The Villarrica volcano which gives its name to this place, is at the center of the park located 8 kms (5 mi) from Pucón.  The vestiges of ancient volcanic eruptions bestow the park with a unique beauty. One example is Lake Calafquén, where one can enjoy aquatic activities, sport fishing and other enjoyable pastimes on its banks.

Another of the park’s must-sees is a walking tour on the trails that surround the volcano and from where one reaches Lakes Caburgua, Calafquén and Villarica, as well as marvel at the sight of the snowy Sollipulli, Lanín, Osorno and Choshuenco volcanos.

7.- Conguillío National Park : Surrounded by mystic rivers that are hidden among vibrant native forests, this natural refuge seduces its visitors with the sights and sounds of birds and pristine waterfalls.

Do you like dinosaurs? If so, this place will knock your socks off since, due to the eruptions of the Llaima volcano, some sectors are just like Jurassic Park.

8.- Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park : One of the most popular parks in Chile because of the magnificent Saltos del Petrohué -cascades of water falling into turquoise colored pools- and the Lake Todos Los Santos, which bring visitors from all parts of the world year round.

But that’s not all.  Visitors will be amazed by the immense beauty of this paradise, home to fauna like the pudú – a species of midget deer – as well as pumas, quiques (a species of mustelid), and birds like the big taguas and black woodpeckers, all unique to Chile.

It is also an ideal place for winter sports when the snow-covered peaks attract skiers and snowboarders who live it up as they speed down the famous slopes.

9.- Corcovado National Park : Ok, we’re not talking about Brazil. This is in the Chilean Patagonia. Here you’ll find the dormant Corcovado volcano, also named Puntiagudo, which dominates the landscape and is surrounded by six lakes.  It has been immortalized as a great challenge for rock climbers thanks to its almost 2,500 meter (8202 ft) height.

FYI: The Corcovado is the natural habitat of the  huemul, the Andean deer that appears on the Chilean flag.

10.- Bernardo O’Higgins National Park : A true jewel in the Chilean Patagonia and one of the largest reserves of fresh water on the planet.

This is truly a paradise for adventure-lovers, as it provides an exciting opportunity to navigate through the evergreen Magallanes Rain Forest. The site abounds with turquoise colored cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. And there’s more, add excursions among the fiords and glaciers which are synonymous with virgin beauty.  A true Must-See!

11.- Cabo de Hornos National Park : This park is found in the most remote part of the country. Beyond the immense Andean mountain range, this part of southern Chile, far-flung and difficult to reach, offers magnificent experiences.  One can go where few have dared to sail, through islands at the end of the continent where aromas, colors and landscapes turn this experience into a historic moment in the lived of those who accept the challenge.
