Chile is a gorgeous spectacle. Spaghetti-thin, up to half of this country’s slim width is covered by the stratospheric Andes. Glaciers calve. Penguins mix with flamingos. Vineyards knit mild valleys into a neat green patchwork. Sharp spikes of snow-capped rock bite into the sky. At least that’s what your photos will say. It’s harder to capture how it feels to be wrapped in raw wilderness or to scan the expansive pampas from the porch of a secluded estancia. Many travelers plan tours in Chile just to experience the awesome variety of nature. But we also bring you into the fascinating array of local cultures strung the length of the country. We meet the urbanites of Santiago, experts in the Maipo Valley vineyards, the hardy islanders of Chiloé and, of course, the gauchos who ride the pampas. North to south, mountaintop to seashore, you’ll get a carefully curated up-close look at this vast and varied country.

  • Exploring the lively capital city of Santiago, on foot at eye level
  • Sipping and strolling through vineyards in the Maipo Valley
  • Experiencing the picturesque Lake District to see Petrohué Falls
  • Enjoying a curated walk along the slopes of Osorno Volcano
  • Ferrying to Chiloé Island to see rare Magellanic and Humboldt penguins
  • Savoring a mountaintop picnic with the chance to spot guanaco, condors and rheas
  • Joining a local family for a feast of meat and seafood in a covered pit
  • Following scenic footpaths in Patagonia's scenic Torres del Paine National Park
  • Boating across an ice-studded lake to the face of Grey Glacier
  • Spending the day on a working estancia with friendly gauchos

  • Experience the world on foot and at eye level . Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region.

  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in the region you’re exploring, including rainforest lodges, 16th century villas, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From gourmet picnics to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know our walking tour regions more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Sustainable travel that supports the places you’re visiting. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.

Sergio was an excellent tour guide, super knowledgable and really friendly with great English!
"Sergio is a really knowledgable and enthousiastic guide. The free walking tour he gave us with urbantours was not just a script. We felt his passion for his hometown and he adapted his tour to the questions we‘ve asked"
"He was knowledgeable, easy to talk to and made the two hours go by really quickly."

Sergio Ribeiro

Fun and passionate tour guide

Sergio came to Chile to learn Spanish in 2003. He fell in love with the city and with a girl from Santiago, who he came to marry. This relationship enabled him to have a deeper knowledge of the Chilean culture and customs and to adapt some of them such as having the Chilean ‘once’.

His experience with tourism started in his hometown, Sao Paulo, where he volunteered to show foreigners around his city as a way to practice the languages.

Sergio has the job he’s always dreamed of: working outdoors, speaking different languages and sharing experiences with people from all over the world

Walk through the historical center of Santiago de Chile and get to know the most important places in the city on this free tour.

La Moneda Palace in Santiago de Chile

We'll meet at the scheduled time at the Plaza de las Armas in Santiago de Chile , one of the liveliest areas in the Chilean capital. In front of Pedro de Valdivia's equestrian sculpture , we'll talk about the foundation of Santiago, its myths and the key role played by this Chilean man. You're sure to be surprised!

While we talk about the origins of the capital, we'll pass by its most representative buildings: the Municipality, the National History Museum, the Santiago Central Post Office and the Metropolitan Cathedral. We'll enter the interior of this neoclassical temple to contemplate its careful interior decoration and to reveal the curious anecdotes that surround it. Do you know who the embalmed hearts belong to hidden in its crypt?

The next stop on the free tour of Santiago de Chile will be beside the Church of St Augustine . Here, we'll learn about the  history of the Chilean Quintrala , which is one of this city's unsolved mysteries... From here, we'll walk to the Poniente area to admire its early 20th-century neoclassical and Art-Deco architecture .

To learn more about Chile's recent history, we'll walk next to the Supreme Court of Justice, the old National Congress, and the Mint Palace, where the country's Prime Minister resides. We'll also talk about the causes and consequences of the 1973 Coup d'état.

After 2 hours of discovering the most interesting spots in Santiago de Chile, we'll conclude the tour.

Unfortunately, we're unable to accept bookings of more than  6 people  on this free tour of Santiago de Chile. If there are more than 6 of you, we recommend booking a private tour of Santiago .

Please be aware that the tours taking place on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday will also be done in Spanish as well as English.

Walking tour in Santiago de Chile: A different way to discover the city.

La Moneda goberment palace

If you want to discover the capital of Chile in a fun, dynamic and cultural way, I recommend you to do a walking tour with ChileVive Tours . It is an excellent option to discover the most emblematic places of Santiago, from the La Moneda Palace to the San Cristóbal Hill, passing by the Plaza de Armas, the Santa Lucía Hill, the bohemian neighborhoods of Lastarria and Bellavista, and much more.

The tour starts at the La Moneda Palace , the seat of the Chilean government and one of the most important buildings in the country. There you can see the changing of the guard, a spectacle full of color and tradition that takes place every two days. Then, you will walk through the historic center of Santiago, where you can admire the former National Congress, the main square (Plaza de Armas) and the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Historical Museum and other colonial buildings.

You will continue to the Central Market , a place full of life and flavor where you can find all kinds of fresh products, especially fish and seafood. There you can appreciate the gastronomic diversity of Chile and its indigenous, Spanish and European influences.

The next destination is the Forest Park, a beautiful green space that borders the Mapocho River and houses the National Museum of Fine Arts, one of the oldest in Latin America. There you can admire works of Chilean and international art, from the 19th century to the present.

Then, you will climb up to the Santa Lucía Hill , a natural oasis in the middle of the city that offers spectacular panoramic views. There you can see the Hidalgo Castle, the Neptune Fountain, the Manuel Montt Viewpoint and other attractions that will surprise you. You can also taste a typical drink called "Mote con Huesillos" , which is made with peach juice, dried peaches (huesillos), sugar and wheat mote. It is a refreshing and delicious drink that you can enjoy with a spoon after drinking the juice.

The tour continues through the Lastarria neighborhood, one of the most cultural and bohemian in Santiago. There you can find cafes, restaurants, bookstores, art galleries and design shops. It is an ideal place to stroll and enjoy the creative and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Then, you will pass by the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM), a space dedicated to the dissemination of performing and visual arts. There you can see exhibitions, shows and free activities that will bring you closer to contemporary Chilean culture.

The next stop is the Mulato Gil de Castro Square (MAVI), where the Museum of Visual Arts is located.

Then you will arrive at Plaza Italia, one of the nerve centers of Santiago. There are several historical and cultural monuments there, such as

the German Fountain, the Caupolicán Theater and the Telefónica Tower. It is also a place where sports, social and political events are celebrated.

The tour ends in Bellavista neighborhood, one of the most lively and colorful in Santiago. There you can see La Chascona house-museum, where poet Pablo Neruda lived; Patio Bellavista, a shopping center with restaurants, bars and shops; and Inti Castro's mural "A day in life".

If you choose the 6-hour tour option, you will also enjoy a lunch at a restaurant that serves typical Chilean food. You can choose between Galindo restaurant in Bellavista or one of the restaurants in Central Market. You will taste dishes such as pastel de choclo (corn pie), cazuela (meat stew), porotos granados (bean stew) or empanadas de pino (meat pies).

The San Cristóbal Hill is the perfect place to end the tour with an incredible panoramic view. You can go up by funicular,

cable car or on foot, and enjoy nature, fresh air and the Sanctuary of Immaculate Conception. There you can take pictures, relax and say goodbye to Santiago.

This walking tour in Santiago de Chile is an experience that you cannot miss if you want to discover the city in a different and fun way. You will learn about its history, culture, gastronomy and people, and feel like a local.

I hope you liked this entry for your travel blog and that you are encouraged to do this walking tour in Santiago de Chile. I assure you that you will not regret it and that you will come back with many stories to tell. Have a good trip!

SANTIAGO CITY LANDMARKS WALKING TOUR

Including San Cristobal Hill

Explore Santiago on this informative walking tour.  Enjoy a cable car and funicular ride on San Cristobal Hill for panoramic views of Santiago and Andes Mountains.  A great tour for those who want to see it all!

Changing of the Guard at La Moneda Palace, Santiago, Chile - Santiago City Walking Tour

Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, is home to half of the country’s population. On this walking tour you will see all the important sites and landmarks in the downtown area.

We begin the tour at your hotel and first bring you to the top of San Cristobal Hill by cable car or “teleférico”.  From here you will have a panoramic view of the entire city of Santiago where your guide will describe the city’s geography and point out the sites to be seen during the walking tour.  We will descend the hill by an open-air funicular that will bring you right into the colorful Bellavista neighborhood with streets lined with lively cafes.

From there we walk by Plaza Italia and stroll through beautiful Florestal Park to reach the Lastarria neighborhood with many tiny shops and cafés.  Our walking tour continues to Santa Lucia Hill, an oasis in the center of Santiago.  Originally named Huelén Hill by the Mapuche Indians, this is where Pedro de Valdivia founded the city in 1541.

We continue to the historic city center visiting the Museum of Fine Arts, Central Market, and Plaza de Armas, Santiago’s main square.  At the plaza, you will see the Cathedral, City Hall, Historic Post Office, and Monument to Chile’s Indigenous People, as well as enter the Museum of National History.

We then pass by the Old Congress Building and Supreme Court and continue onward to La Moneda Palace (The Government House). Afterwards, we will stop by the oldest church in Chile, the San Francisco Church, and visit a handicraft market for souvenir shopping. At the end of the tour, your guide will take you back to your hotel using the city’s modern Metro system for a real local experience.

Please note :

(1) The order of sites visited may vary depending on your pick up location.

(2) If your hotel is outside the downtown, Providencia or El Golf neighborhoods, the meeting point for this tour is the Sheraton San Cristobal Hotel located at Avenida Santa Maria 1742, Providencia.  In this case, guests must make their own arrangements to arrive at the meeting point.

(3) The summer months (December-March) are hot and sunny in Santiago with daytime temperatures rising to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  The total distance of this walking tour is around 5 to 6 miles.  We encourage guests to wear comfortable walking shoes and to bring a hat and sunscreen.

(4) If you would like to explore the city from the comfort of your own private tour van with minimal walking, we recommend our Santiago and Neighborhoods Tour , which sees many of the same downtown landmarks and goes beyond the city center, or our Santiago City and Wine Tour , which also passes by the downtown landmarks and includes a visit to a nearby wine vineyard.

This tour is not available on Mondays due to the closure of museums and the gondola at San Cristobal Hill on this day.
