Eines vorweg, bei meinem Report geht es nicht um die Leistung von Chris Rea, der war nämlich in Top-Form, sondern um die mangelhafte Organisation des Abends. Viele andere und ich hatten bewusst Stehplatzkarten erworben und wurden vom Personal zum Sitzen gezwungen. Ich war wegen der sinnlosen Diskussionen so frustriert, dass ich die letzte halbe Stunde des perfekten Konzerts nicht mehr genießen konnte. Das Parkett wurde im Vorfeld als Standing area ausgerufen, im übrigen die einzige in Deutschland. Am Ende war es wie bei allen bestuhlten Konzerten, den sitzenden Gästen wurde von den Ordnern der Blick auf die Bühne frei gehalten. Wenn in der ersten Reihe viel Geld für ein Konzert bezahlt werden muss, habe ich wirklich Verständnis. Aber hier saßen nur Inhaber von Stehplatzkarten, das muss ich wirklich nicht verstehen. Marek Lieberberg war vor Ort und fand das offensichtlich in Ordnung. Ich nicht!

Ein fantastischer Abend! Ein Chris Rea mit großer Spielfreude und authentisch wie immer. Er zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass man auch ohne großen Firlefanz, ehrlichen und herzlichen Kontakt zu seinem Publikum haben kann. Ein toller Musiker, der uns hoffentlich noch lange erhalten bleibt!

Mit 66 Jahren....

....da startet Chris Rea noch einmal richtig durch und spielt - mit der neuen CD Road Songs for Lovers im Rücken - unbeschwerter auf denn je zuvor. Vor dem Konzert scheint alles wie immer: Zahlreiche blaue Gitarrennachbildungen rahmen das Bühnenbild ein wie schon bei seinen beiden (oder gar drei?) letzten Touren. Doch dann legt er sofort mit neuen Songs von dem aktuellen Album los, und die alten Hits spielt er in überraschenden neuen Arrangements. Stainsby Girls zunächst nur mit Pianobegleitung, bevor Chris Rea dann zum ersten Mal an diesem Abend nach dem Einsatz diverser neuer Gitarren zu seiner uralten völlig abgenutzten roten greift, mit der er schon vor mehreren Jahrzehnten auf der Bühne stand. Stony Road mit gleich zwei virtuosen Gitarrensoli, und nachdem der letzte Akkord dieses Songs verklungen ist, drückt er diesem Instrument vor dem Wechsel zur nächsten Gitarre ganz versonnen ein Küsschen auf, nicht als Showeffekt dem Publikum zugewandt, sondern nur für wenige seitlich links der Bühne sitzende Zuschauer sichtbar. Es ist ein mitreißendes Konzert und dennoch im Sitzen, aber kaum dass der letzte Ton des Hauptsets verklungen ist, hält es niemand mehr auf den Stühlen. Wie auf Kommando schnellen die Zuschauer von ihren Sitzen auf - Standing ovations für das vielleicht beste Konzert, das Chris Rea je in Hannover gespielt hat, und er hat deren viele gespielt! Als Zugabe dann wieder gewohntes in neuem Kleid: On the beach und - wie fast immer - Let´s dance in einer XXL-Version, und der altehrwürdige Kuppelsaal verwandelt sich in eine große Dance Hall, soweit es die Bestuhlung denn zulässt. Man kann Chris Rea nur wünschen, dass er trotz seiner gesundheitlichen Probleme diese neu gefundene beschwingte Leichtigkeit noch lange bewahren kann!

Chris Rea kommt auf „Road Songs for Lovers“ Tour

Chris Rea kommt im Herbst auf Tour nach Deutschland und hat nicht nur sein neues Album „Road Songs“, sondern auch all seine Klassiker im Gepäck. Tickets für die Konzerte in Erfurt, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Dresden, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Hannover, Hamburg, Berlin, München und Wien gibt’s ab Mittwoch, 26. April (10 Uhr) im Presale bei Ticketmaster !

Im Leben des Chris Rea gab es Anfang des neuen Jahrtausends ein besonders einschneidendes Erlebnis: Die Diagnose Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs warf mit einem Mal alles über den Haufen, was sich der Brite in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten seiner überaus erfolgreichen Karriere aufgebaut hatte. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem möglicherweise bevorstehenden Tod beschloss Rea, von nun an die Musik zu machen, die ihm wirklich etwas bedeutete: Blues. Vorbei war zunächst die Zeit von „Josephine“, „I Can Hear Your Heartbeat“ oder „The Road To Hell“, die ihm in den achtziger und neunziger Jahren die bis dato größten Erfolge beschert hatten. Nach seiner Genesung gründete er sein eigenes Label Jazzee Blue und veröffentlichte dort u.a. sein großes, elf Alben und einen Bildband plus DVD umfassendes Projekt „Blue Guitars“ – ein absoluter Überraschungserfolg.

Danach war erst mal Schluss, der immer noch angeschlagene Musiker ging 2006 auf Abschiedstour. Jedoch hielt es ihn nicht lange zu Hause, bereits kurze Zeit später, im Jahr 2007, meldete er sich zurück mit neuen Projekten, es folgten weitere Touren und sein Best-Of-Album „Still so Far to Go: The Best of Chris Rea“.

Jetzt meldet sich der Ausnahmemusiker mit einem neuen Album voller großartiger Rock-Balladen zurück. „Road Songs“ begeistert uns vor allem durch die einzigartige, sanfte Stimme und die herausragenden Songschreiber-Qualitäten von Chris Rea. Freuen dürfen wir uns bei seinen 13 Terminen in Deutschland und Österreich aber auch auf die alten Hits wie „On The Beach“, „Julia“, „Let’s Dance“ und „Looking For The Summer“.

With his gravelly voice and smooth slide guitar, Chris Rea (4th March 1951), hailing from Middlesbrough, UK, became one of the biggest stars of the 1980s.

Inspired by the music of Joe Walsh and Ry Cooder, Chris Rea picked up the guitar quite late, at the age of 22. Yet it was as a solo artist that Rea achieved success, signing to Magnet Records, releasing his first single, "So Much Love" in 1974.

Following collaborations with Hank Marvin and Catherine Howe, Rea's debut album was then released in 1978, titled "Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?" The album showcased his biggest hit to date in the US, "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" which rocketed to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, also receiving a Grammy Award nomination for this song.

Despite this breakthrough, Rea failed to continue this momentum with his second, third and fourth albums, having to wait until 1983, when his record company ambivalently released a selection of raw demo tapes, titled "Water Sign," which became a surprise hit in Ireland and Mainland Europe, with the single "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat" entering the top 20 in several countries. Rea built on this success with "On The Beach" (1986) and "Dancing With Strangers" (1987), embarking on world tours, selling out stadium-sized venues, including two performances at Wembley Arena.

His 1989 album, "The Road to Hell" was his biggest breakthrough hit, becoming his first number one album in the UK. "Auberge" (1991) also topped the UK charts. Following this, Rea continued to release albums, whilst also overcoming pancreatic cancer over the early 2000s. After a successful recovery, Rea has continued touring, alongside sporadic recordings.

Certainly one of the smoothest men ever to emerge from Middlesbrough, Chris Rea is probably one of the few sons of that town to experience not only pop success, but pop success on both sides of the Atlantic, too. In 1978, his track ‘Fool (If You Think It’s Over)’ went to number twelve on the U.S. charts, but whilst he wouldn’t replicate that achievement in the UK immediately, the eighties would see him become a household name in his homeland, with his iconic 1989 full-length The Road to Hell eventually going six times platinum on this side of the pond - the fourth in a run of five LPs that would reach that status and mark Rea out as a legend of AOR. Since recovering from pancreatic cancer in 2001, he’s gone back to his blues roots full-time, turning out a slew of albums from that genre and playing shows that lean that way, too. His last major UK jaunt, in March of 2012, saw him play a greatest hits selection from the eighties as well as a fair few blues tracks; his full live backing band proved equally adept at helping him out with both - like Rea himself, they’re incredibly versatile performers, something that he continues to prove to this day as he continues his blues odyssey.

We have seen him many times before we now he has been sick so we dont think this time will bee fabolus but it was for sure, he is the musick, we just love him, so thanks for this wonderfull show. Chris Rea was on our bucket list. We live in Calgary and built our travel this fall around last nights INCREDIBLE show. Road to Hell is always a highlight not to mention dancing to Last Dance. Would do it all over again tonite if we could.Danke Sharon and Mitch

Sadly you should know Chris collapsed in Oxford the night before and the rest of the tour This one in Brighton & Bournemouth were cancelled. Glad he seems OK and hope he fully recovers, and does not try to continue and put his health at risk

Good organisation, started in time and the music was charming.

No enough car parking spaces and I would recommend using the tube if you have an event in Hammersmith.

The husky-voiced musician licked his driving test in an ice cream van.

“YOU DON’T need to take drugs to be an addict,” says Chris Rea, the gravel-voiced singer behind such hits as Driving Home for Christmas and The Road to Hell. “I’m very happy to admit that I’m a four-wheel addict.

“It all started with my dad and the summers we spent in Italy. I’m from an Italian-Irish family, so there were a lot of us, and we’d all pile into a converted Humber hearse for the long drive from Middlesbrough, down through France, Germany and Switzerland. Dad was a fantastic storyteller and used to weave wonderful tales of Ferraris, the Reims Grand Prix and the Mille Miglia [endurance road race]. This stuff exploded in my head like LSD.”

Rea was one of seven children and the family name was well known in Middlesbrough, thanks to his father’s ice cream factory. “I actually took my test in one of Dad’s ice cream vans,” says the 66-year-old. “When I did the emergency stop, the tester fell off the box he was sitting on and gashed his leg. I had to take him to hospital, but he still passed me.”

After a spell delivering ice cream, Rea took up the guitar and released his debut album in 1978. After his single Fool (If You Think It’s Over) became a hit, he had enough money to splash out on a Ferrari Dino, but then success started to peter out . . . until he bought a Volvo 340 hatchback.

“My career was saved by that car,” he laughs. “Things had gone quiet in the UK, so I drove all over Europe doing as many gigs and TV shows as I could. I must have done 60,000 miles in that Volvo.”

When The Road to Hell was released in 1989, it went to the top of the UK album chart. The title track was inspired by the M25 and M4. “Music and cars fit together very well,” says Rea. “A lot of the new album, Road Songs for Lovers, was written while I was driving into London on the M4 from my house in Berkshire.”

One car he always wants in his garage is a Caterham Seven. “I bought my first in 1988 and I’ve upgraded every time they change it. It’s the same colour blue, though, so my wife thinks I’ve got the same car. It’s heaven to drive.”

Rea, who married his childhood sweetheart, Joan, and has two grown-up daughters, Josephine and Julia, also owns a tiny classic Fiat 500. “Whenever people see me in it, it makes them smile. Unfortunately, it’s becoming a bit too small for modern roads. I was forced onto the pavement by a woman driving a Range Rover the other day. She was on the phone. She didn’t even see me.”

Rea has raced historic cars and is also a fan of Formula One. He used to be a regular in the pits, hanging out with Eddie Jordan, then owner of the Jordan F1 team. “Me and Eddie became big mates and, one year, he even made me part of the pit crew. I had the full uniform. He put me in charge of the tyre-warmer for the rear right tyre of Eddie Irvine’s car.”

He feels F1 today is too clinical. “The other week, I saw back-to-back comparisons of a pole lap from Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna. The Senna lap was much busier because he was having to work the car, hustling it through chicanes that looked like they could break your neck. You don’t get that now, the cars are too good.

“I wonder if it’s time for the Formula One bosses to sit down with fans and ask us what we want. Do we want to see the march of technology? Or do we want to see people driving cars?”
