The Temple Mount  1

The Temple Mount is the site where King Solomon’s temple is thought to have once stood. It has a great religious significance to millions around the globe and it’s probably the holiest place on this Earth . Here are the top Israel Biblical sites that are worth seeing at the Temple Mount:

Dome of the Rock

This Islamic shrine is a really important religious site to all the three world’s biggest religions.

It is believed that today’s Dome of the Rock is a place where God created Adam , the first human. 2

It’s also believed that it’s where Abraham wanted to sacrifice his son , Isaac, for God. 3

Last but not least- it’s believed that the legendary Ark of the Covenant is hidden under the Well of Souls located under the Dome of the Rock. 4

Western Wall

The most important place for Jews is what’s left from the Temple in Jerusalem. Jesus has been visited it many times throughout his life. When he was 12 years old that’s where his parents found him 5 . It’s also where he got angry about making a market out of his Father’s home  6 . Finally, it’s where he had been teaching 7 .

Men and women are not allowed to get to the Wall together. There is a separate section for each sex.

Via Dolorosa  8

Your Jerusalem pilgrimage won’t be complete without walking through the Via Dolorosa . It was where Jesus was carrying the cross on his way to Golgotha.

If you are looking for a peaceful place where you can meditate on Jesus’s suffering, you may be quite disappointed. The Way of Sorrow is stuffed with shops, restaurants, and hordes of people. Nine stations are located on the narrow streets of Jerusalem, the final five are inside the Holy Sepulchre church .

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Golgotha / Calvary 9

Calvary is where Jesus died on the cross. Historians don’t know the exact place of Golgotha, but it’s believed to be located inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. There is a Calvary chapel inside a church where you can pray for a while.

For all of you who decided to walk along the Via Dolorosa, stations 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th are located at Calvary.

Jesus’s Tomb 10

After Jesus died on Golgotha Mount, he was placed in the tomb and resurrected 3 days later. No matter what Catholic Holy Land tours you are going to attend, you will probably need to wait in a long line to get inside the tomb. I’ve been in Israel twice, on September and February, and each time it took us about an hour waiting to see the tomb. Was it worth it? Not really. You have about 5 seconds inside the tomb, as the other tourists are waiting to get inside too. You won’t have time to pray, or even take a photo.

Jesus’s Tomb is the last, 14th Station of the Cross.

Chapel of Adam

Right below the Golgotha, there is a final resting place of Adam, the very first human. It has a great allegorical meaning. A man (Adam) has brought the death into this world 11 , and the man (Jesus) has conquered it many years later 12 .

Stone of Anointing

It’s believed that the Stone of Unction is a place where the body of Jesus was placed before the burial.

The Franciscan Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene

It’s believed that it’s where Jesus met Saint Mary Magdalene after he has raised from the dead 13 .

Syriac Chapel

It’s the final resting place of St Joseph of Arimathea, the man who took care of Jesus’s body after the crucifixion 14 .

Prison of Christ

The chapel is a part of Ambulatory. It’s believed it’s where Jesus was imprisoned before the crucifixion.

It’s important to distinguish Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. The first is located in the heart of Jerusalem, whereas the second in Egypt. Moses received Ten Commandments from God on the peak Mount Sinai.

Dormition Abbey

It’s believed that both the Last Supper 15 , and the assumption of Mary, Jesus’s Mother, into Heaven took place somewhere around today’s Abbey of the Dormition. The Cenacle is open to the public, and it’s located on the upper floor of King David’s Tomb .

Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu

The church was built in a place where Peter denies Jesus three times 16 .

BONUS INFO: It’s usually not a part of Catholic pilgrimages to Israel but there is one specific spot on Mount Zion that’s worth visiting. The final resting place of Oskar Schindler , German who saved 1,200 Jews during World War II, is located there.

Mount of Olives

Mount of Olives is mentioned both in the Old 17 , and the New Testament 18 . It’s believed that Jesus spent there his last moments before being arrested and crucified.

A large number of Jesus’s disciples lived in Capernaum Israel, including Peter, John, Andrew, and James. It’s also where Jesus was teaching 28 . Visiting a town of such significance is very interesting and it is a site where Jesus was teaching people.

Sea of Galilee

Another very important site for Christianity is the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Lake of Gennesaret. This is the body of water that Christ performed one of his most spectacular miracles on. He walked on water and showed his disciples that anything was possible when you have enough faith 29 .

Only ancient ruins remain of Caesarea today but it’s still a place that people like to see with their own eyes. Caesarea is mentioned many times in the New Testament. It’s the place where the occupying forces of Rome gathered 30 .

It’s also where Herod the Great ordered the census that caused Mary and Joseph to flee 31 . Stepping foot near the area where Herod ordered the execution of newborn children is quite surreal.

Golan Heights

This is another site that was mentioned in the Bible more than once 32 . Golan Heights are a part of many Israel guided tours. Even though nothing spectacular happened there, it’s still a place worth visiting, as it’s one of the Israel biblical sites.

This is the village where Jesus Christ famously turned water into wine. 33 Miracles are certainly something that attracts many tourists to particular locations. The water-into-wine miracle is one of the most famous acts that Christ performed during his time on the earth. Jordan River

Mount Azazel

Visiting Mount Azazel can be interesting because it is thought to be the spot of the scapegoat ceremony depicted in the book of Leviticus 35 . It isn’t a populated area now but some desert tours will take you through the site.

Most believers know the story of the walls of Jericho. The Israelites marched around the walls for days and eventually sounded their horns. The mighty walls of Jericho came crashing down, allowing the Israeli forces to win victory in battle 36 . Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel was once a place where the false god Baal was worshiped. It is at this place where the prophet Elijah challenged 450 prophets of this deity to a contest at this site. The contest was to determine the fate of Israel and which god was in charge of the land 37 . Of course, Elijah won the day and the rest is history.

The Dead Sea has its own religious significance but many also like to seek out the sites where Sodom and Gomorrah 38 once stood. Of course, you’ll remember that one of these towns, in particular, was said to be reduced to a pillar of salt. Dead Sea vacation is a popular choice among the travelers visiting Isreal but most of them are not aware that this place also has a religious significance.

Mount Tabor

This is the site also known as the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus had a profound experience in this area that caused his face to shine like the sun. That’s where he met Elijah and Moses, and his disciples heard the voice of God 39 .

Mount of Beatitudes

This is a site where Christ recounted eight blessings, one of the most famous of his teachings 40 . Today the beautiful Catholic chapel stands at the top of the mountain. It was built in memory of Jesus’s famous speech.

Must-see Christian sites in the Holy Land

Israel might be the Jewish homeland, but the Christian faith has remained tied to the Holy Land for over 2000 years, thanks to the tales of a certain Jesus of Nazareth. Whatever your faith, there are some awe-inspiring, must-see Christian sites in Israel and they are all well worth checking out. Here’s our guide to the must-see sites to visit.

We’ve condensed the list down to the following sites. You might not have time to see them all, but hey, make that a reason to come and visit the Holy Land again! :-)

Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth

The exact site of Jesus’ birth is in an underground grotto beneath the Church, marked by a 14 pointed star set in the ground. If you hit peak tourist season, you might just get overwhelmed by the intensity and passion from some Christian pilgrims as they kneel down to get a little closer to that magical star…

Little known fact about Bethlehem : it has major importance for all three major faiths – as well as its being probably the most important Christian site in Israel, Muslims believe Bethlehem was a major prayer stop on the Prophet Muhammad’s way to Jerusalem, while Jews recognize the gravesite of the biblical martriarch Rachel in Bethlehem, the 3rd most important site in the Jewish faith.

Bethlehem is fairly easy to get to as a tourist, especially if you get hooked up with a tour agency or take one of these budget-friendly Bethlehem tours . Visiting one of the absolute must-see Christian sites in Israel can always be done yourself, but the security checkpoints between Jerusalem and Bethlehem (some 5.5 miles separate the two) don’t make it an easy option.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and hence regarded as one of the most important Christian sites in Israel . It’s an impressive looking Church on the inside, perhaps less so from the outside as it’s wedged in-between other buildings. The various sites throughout the Church mark various spots in Jesus’ final hours and in his death. If my Israeli-born wife was impressed, you can be assured it’s one fine, emotionally moving place to visit. Free entry and open to all faiths, it’s open from morning til night most days.

The Church of All Nations , along with the adjoining Garden of Gethsamane , is located at the bottom of the Mount of Olives . Here, Jesus is believed to have conducted his last prayers before being betrayed by Judas and then captured by the Romans. The Garden of Gethsemane , which is right next to the Church of All Nations , is believed to have been a garden even in Jesus’ time and is a lovely, tranquil spot. It is here that Jesus and the Disciples came after the Last Supper , and here where Jesus gave his last sermon.

The Church of St. John the Baptist is located in the gorgeous hillside neighborhood of Ein Kerem, a short drive out of Jerusalem city center. This church marks the birthplace of St. John, who is best known for baptizing Jesus. The church itself lies in beautiful, peaceful surroundings and is well worth the ride out of the bustling city center.

Qasr el Yahud

Now open daily to the public after extensive renovations, this site has to be on your list of must-sees Christian sites in Israel if you’re seriously interested in checking out your Christian roots. It’s located on the road to Jericho, off of Road 90 (which you can get to from Road 1 out of Jerusalem, or straight down from Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee).

Probably not as dramatic as the sites in Jerusalem and Bethlehem described above, but widely considered as Number 3 on the list of Christian sites to see in the Holy Land. Read more here .

Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus

There are a number of additional Christian sites in Nazareth well worth a visit, including the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangel Gabriel (built over the freshwater spring known as “Marys Well”), the Greek Catholic “Synagogue Church” (site of the synagogue where a young Jesus was taught, and where he later preached), and the Church of St. Joseph (built over a cave identified as the “workshop” of Jesus’ father Joseph).

The Jesus Trail

The Jesus Trail really is a beautiful trail, starting from Nazareth and ending on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, some 40 miles (60km) away. Most can finish it within 3-4 days as it’s a relatively easy hike. It’s a perfect hike for anyone feeling fit and healthy, and interested in seeing the stunning Galilee landscape, together with New Testament legends such as Cana and Zippori.

“The town of Jesus”, Capernaum

There are several churches here that celebrate the life of Jesus, including the Church of the House of St. Peter , a large house of several rooms and a courtyard that Jesus chose as his home, and the Synagogue , where Jesus often preached and performed miracles: both these locations have been restored and converted into a museum (with a small entrance fee).

“They went as far as Capharnaum, and as soon as the sabbath came he went to the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority.”

Capernaum can be easily reached from other tourist sites, such as Nazareth and Tiberias by bus or by car.

The Mount of Beatitudes

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.” (Mark 6:41)

Tabgha is fairly easy to get to, being some 2.5 kilometers south of Capernaum, and just 12 kilometers north of Tiberias.

St. George’s Monastery

Today you’ll still find a number of Greek Orthodox monks who inhabit the monastery, and who are typically welcoming of visitors (but do take into consideration this is a church and a place of worship – so no short shorts!). Hence the Greek flag you’ll probably see flying in the monastery grounds.

Bethsaida is also known as the birthplace of three of the Apostles , Peter, Andrew and Philip. Recently rediscovered, there is some dispute as to its exact location but the site known as Bethsaida, or et-Tel, has a lot to offer archeological fans over its 21 acre site: there is even an old cobbled street from the days of Jesus.

Israel Christian Sites 1 The Way of Sorrow - the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem

A trip to the Holy Land is not complete without spending at least  a day or two in the magical city of Jerusalem.

For many Christian visitors, walking the 14 stations along the Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem is the highlight of their visit. 

The Way of Sorrow follows the route that Jesus followed in agony, from his conviction near today's Lions Gate and until his crucifixion in Golgotha, the site of today's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. On the way, you will pass two important churches, Savior's Church and the Messianic Church.

Israel Christian Sites 2 The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem

The last 5 stations of the Way of Sorrow are located within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

It is considered by Christians to be the holiest place on earth. The Church encompasses:

• Golgotha, the site where Jesus was crucified and died on the Cross
• the Stone of Unction commemorating the place where the body of Jesus was cleansed for burial
• and the tomb where Jesus was buried and then resurrected. 

The Church is a fascinating place to explore. It was destroyed over and over by the Romans, the Persians, the Muslims, by forces of nature and time; and it has always been rebuilt.

Israel Christian Sites 3 The Last Supper Room & Garden of Gethsemane

Jesus came to Jerusalem to meet his fate. You can follow his path on the night before his Crucifixion.

The Upper Room is considered the location of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. The room is located above the Tomb of David near the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion. 

Many believe that the last supper was actually a celebration of the Passover Seder.

From there, you descend to the bottom of Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane, and the adjoining Church of All Nations.

The Garden is where Jesus slept with his followers on the night before his crucifixion. Here he gave his last sermon. Here said to Peter: “Shall I not drink the cup the Father Has given me?” (John 18:11), and then gave himself up to the treasonous hands of Judas and the soldiers.

Israel Christian Sites 4 Bethlehem

Bethlehem is home to the Church of the Nativity where Jesus was born, and one of the oldest churches in the world.

If you are lucky enough to visit the Holy Land in late December, there is no better place on earth to celebrate Christmas in Israel than in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. 

The atmosphere is absolutely electrifying. Joining Christmas midnight mass service at the Church of the Nativity is unforgettable. You can truly feel the miracle of Jesus' birth. 

The actual site of the birth of Christ is in an underground grotto beneath the Church marked by a star set in the ground. 

Note that Bethlehem is in the Palestinian Territories so bring your passport. There is no need to get out your car or bus and the border crossing is over before you know it, within minutes.

Israel Christian Sites 5 Jezreel Valley and Mount Tabor

Travelling from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv north to the Galilee, you will pass  today's fertile Jezreel Valley, which we know from scripture as the Valley of Armageddon .

Having witnessed seven thousand years of mankind's battles. it is no surprise that Armageddon valley is destined to be the place of the final battle and 2nd coming of Christ, according to Revelations.

Continuing along the footstep of Jesus, you can ascend Mount Tabor, also known as  Transfiguration Mount .  

As revealed, "Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.  Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.” (Matthew 17:13). 

Standing at the top of the mountain near the beautiful Transfiguration church, you will can catch a breathtaking view of Armageddon Valley, the city of Nazareth and the Galilee Mountains.

Israel Christian Sites 6 Nazareth 

The place where it all started is in Nazareth, the childhood home of Jesus of Nazareth.

The  Annunciation Church of Nazareth is the largest church in the Middle East. It is built above the place where Mary lived. 

The small underground grotto, known as the Basilica of the Anunciation, marks the spot where the angel Gabriel declared to Mary "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call his name Jesus" (Luke 1:31 ).

There are a few other notable churches in Nazareth that are worth visiting: the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangel Gabriel, the Greek Catholic “Synagogue Church” and the Church of St. Joseph.

Israel Christian Sites 7 Capernaum

Jesus left Nazareth and spent three years of his life in the Sea of ​​Galilee area, living in the town of Capernaum.

You can also travel northeast from Nazareth to the small town of Capernaum. It's under an hour's drive along the northern coast of the Sea of ​​Galilee.

Capernaum is often called the Town of Jesus.

It was at a local synagogue that he preached the Eucharistic discourse. "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you" (John 6: 22-59). Tabgha is a few minutes drive from Capernaum. 

For thousands of years, it was a fishing village on the Sea of ​​Galilee, thanks to warm water springs that attracted algae and fish.

Tabgha is most famous as the place where Jesus performed the miracle of the “multiplication of loaves and fish” (John 6: 1-15).

A few minutes from Tabgha and Capernaum is the Mount of Beatitudes. From this place set high above the Sea of ​​Galilee, you can see the breathtaking views, perhaps just as Jesus did!

The inpirational Sermon on the Mount took place here, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5: 3). 

Israel Christian Sites 10 Yardenit

Yardenit is the spot that commemorates where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

It is located on the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee where the Jordan River flows southwards on its way to the Dead Sea. You can travel here from the northern Christian sites along the western coast of the Sea of Galilee passing the ancient city of Tiberias.

If you wish, you can be baptized here, purifying yourself in the cool and crystal clean waters of the Jordan River.

    Mount Tabor

    The Jordan River

Many songs have been written about the river that connects the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. According to Jewish tradition, the Jewish people crossed into the land of Israel at the Jordan River following the 40-year journey from Egypt. Additionally, according to Christian tradition, the Jordan River is the site of Jesus’ baptism. Today, the Jordan’s often-calm waters offer areas where tourists can partake in kayaking or rafting. There are many hiking trails run by the Israel National Parks Authority, as well as the famous baptismal site near kibbutz Kvutzat Kinneret (Casa al Yehud).

Masada, the high plateau overlooking the Dead Sea, has seen a great deal of Jewish history, from the Jewish zealots making their last stand against the Roman legions, to modern times, as tourists from all over the world come to enjoy the incredible views and history the site has to offer. Ascend and alight Masada by foot (there is a longer snake path or a shorter way up) or cable car. In Biblical times, unlike Shimon bar Kochba at the battle of Betar or the siege of Yodfat, the residents of Masada held out against the Romans and took their own lives rather than be taken captive and enslaved.   The City of David

Located near the Old City, the City of David (Ir David) and its spectacular Jerusalem archaeological sites show what Israel’s capital looked like in Biblical days. Coins and other artifacts have been found in the neighborhood (Silwan), what may have been royal quarters for the rulers of the city. The site also includes portions of the underground aqueduct, which tourists can visit – the water tunnels are perfect for tourists to visit and learn on a hot summer day.

  Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake in Israel, fed largely by the Jordan River. Its Hebrew name, the  Kinneret , is a Biblical reference from Numbers 34:11 and Joshua 13:27, which references the sea. Located on the ancient trade route linking Egypt with the northern kingdoms, the Sea of Galilee drew many Jewish, Greek and Roman settlers, including the families of Jesus and his disciples. According to Christian tradition, the Sea of Galilee is the site of Jesus’s ministry. Today, the site is an important tourist attraction, with hiking trails and baptism sites for Christian pilgrims, as well as leisure activities such as rafting and swimming.

The Biblical city of Shilo is mentioned in both the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament in the Books of Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel, 1 Kings, Psalms and Jeremiah as the site where the Tabernacle and Ark of the Covenant were once located. Points of interest at the site include the place where the Tabernacle stood, storehouses from the time of the Tabernacle, water cisterns and ritual pools, lookouts, an olive press, wine-making press, family burial caves and more. Shilo is also great for family outings, with a short movie about its historical significance, as well as outdoor and leisure attractions like cycling, paintball and ATVs.

Rachel’s Tomb

Although Biblical Rachel did not make it to Hebron, she gave up her burial place next to her husband in Hebron and accepted a burial on the side of a deserted road. Through this act of sacrifice, Rachel’s ‘prize’ was the children of Israel who visit her tomb every day, located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem. Stopping on the way to Hebron, visitors may pray at Rachel’s Tomb (Kever Rachel), which is the third holiest site in Judaism and a cornerstone of Jewish-Israeli identity, with Jews making a pilgrimage to this site since ancient times. Rachel’s story of years of childlessness, before she was granted children, has made her tomb a magnet for Jewish women to pray who are suffering from infertility.

Western Wall

The Western Wall – or Kotel HaMaaravi in Hebrew – is considered by many to be the holiest site in the Jewish religion. It is the last remnant of the Second Jewish Temple, which was expanded upon by Herod the Great, and has heard the Jewish people’s prayers for centuries. Walking through the heart of Jerusalem , over the cobblestones and up to the wall, even the most cynical are moved by a combination of ancient history and religious fervour. While here, don’t forget to leave a note containing your deepest prayers in between the cracks of the wall. For a deeper exploration, you can take an underground tour of the wall’s excavated foundations, which paint a better picture of the sheer scale of the monument.

As you continue your spiritual journey, make a stop at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is mentioned in all four canonical Gospels. Inside you’ll find the Calvary, the supposed site of Jesus’ crucification, and the Tomb of Christ – where he is thought to have been buried and resurrected. The magnificent architecture and beauty of the church are unmatched, and there is a palpable feeling of devotion throughout. At present, there are three principal communities that have jurisdiction over the church (Greek, Franciscan and Armenian), and there are always priests that are ready to hear confessions and administer the sacrament of Reconciliation. It is recommended to go at off-peak hours, as it can get crowded. Either way, this is not a place to miss.

Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives is an important site in both the Jewish and Christian traditions. Along its 2mi (3km) ridge to the east of Jerusalem’s Old City are three main summits. The mountain has served as a burial ground for the Jewish people for 3,000 years, and among the 150,000 graves there are the tombs of the prophets Haggai, Zachariah and Malachi, as well as many other notable rabbinical figures. The sacred nature of the mountain is touched upon in the Bible, where the Mount of Olives is mentioned frequently in the New Testament as the place Jesus stood when he wept over Jerusalem. A visit to this most sombre of spots should include the Dome of the Ascension and the Olive Trees of Gethsemane – the trees are among the oldest in the world and the gardens they occupy are said to be the place Jesus prayed before he was crucified.

Sea of Galilee

A visit to Israel would not be complete without a stop at the Sea of Galilee. This is especially true for those looking to learn from Jesus at the very site where much of his ministry took place. Four of Jesus’s apostles were recruited from the shores of the lake – Andrew, James, John and Peter had all been earning a living by fishing in the area. The Sermon of the Mount was given on the Mount of Beatitudes overlooking the lake and many of the miracles mentioned in the New Testament, including Jesus’s walk on water and the feeding of the multitude, are said to have taken place here as well.

The ancient city of Bethlehem is first mentioned in the Bible as the site of Rachel’s Tomb, where the matriarch Rachel was buried when giving birth to Benjamin. Based on the verse in Jeremiah, Rachel is seen as a natural protector of the Jewish people and as such, the tomb is a holy landmark in the Jewish tradition. Additionally, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke identify Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus. The Church of the Nativity is one of the oldest surviving Christian churches and has drawn Christian pilgrims in for centuries. After walking through the small entrance to the church known as the Door of Humility and following the pathways past the wall mosaics that date back a millennium, you will find yourself at the Grotto of the Nativity, the spot that has long been honoured as Jesus’s birthplace, and is thought to be the oldest continuous site of worship in Christianity.

Mount Tabor

Standing at a peak height of 575m (1,886ft) and gazing over the Lower Galilee, it is easy to imagine the Israelites – under the leadership of Barak and Deborah – rushing down the mountain to vanquish the army of the Canaanites under the command of General Sisera. It was also at this site that Jesus is thought to have undergone his transfiguration, becoming radiant in glory. After a visually inspiring walk up the mountain, take a tour of the Church of the Transfiguration, a Franciscan church built in 1924, which contains a beautiful mosaic depicting the metamorphosis. If you head here on 6 August, the Day of Transfiguration in many church calendars, you will see the sun striking a glass plate that illuminates the mosaic, much as Christ was illuminated on that same peak.

Valley of Elah

It was here, among the Lower Hills of Judah, that the epic battle between David and Goliath took place. As with many places in Israel, armed with only a Bible, a map and a little imagination, it is easy to travel back in time here, and experience the story as if you were there. There are several sites mentioned in the Bible surrounding the valley that turn this classic day hike into a veritable leap into history. The name means “valley of the terebinth trees” and today, visitors can walk through fields covered with red anemones, sunflowers and multicoloured lupins.

Jordan River

The Sea of Galilee could not exist without the Jordan River feeding into it, and this is also an important landmark for both Jewish and Christian people. The ancient Israelites first crossed near Jericho under the leadership of Joshua, and the miracles of Naaman the Leper, Elijah and Elisha recorded in the Bible occurred here. Jesus was, of course, baptised in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, and the baptismal site can be visited, although the site is just across the border in Jordan.

Mount Sodom

The annihilation of the city of Sodom, as it is relayed in the Bible, is a story that has fascinated people for centuries, and has caused the name to become synonymous with sin and destruction. The Mountain of Sodom, made up almost entirely of rock salt, is located on the southwest side of the Dead Sea, and the 10km (6mi) walk up the mountain will treat you to some extraordinary, totally unique views. Be sure to catch Lot’s Wife as she juts out from the mountain, stuck there for eternity as a pillar of salt.

The TEMPLE MOUNT, also called HARAM AL-SHARIF which means the NOBLE SANCTUARY, is a plateau in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Temple Mount is considered to be the holiest place in Jerusalem and a place of huge importance to today’s 3 main religions in the World: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism. It is the site where King Solomon’s First Temple stood once.

While the Dome of the Rock was built around 690 AD, the Al-Aqsa mosque was built 20 years later around 710 AD.

In the 11th century during the Crusaders’ times, Crusader kings converted the Al-Aqsa mosque into a royal palace. In the 12th century, it became the headquarters of the Knights of Templar. Sultan Saladin took it in the 12th century, followed by Mamluks in the mid-14th century.

Today Muslims or more precisely the Waqf (the Supreme Muslim Religious Council ) manage the Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque, while the City of Jerusalem is under Israeli governance.

The entrance to Temple Mountain for non-Muslims is from the wooden Mughrabi Bridge next to the Western Wall.

The shrine has been a part of a mosque since the 12th century when Sultan Saladin defeated the Crusaders. Since Muslims believe also in the Ascension of Jesus Christ, the church was converted into a mosque. Ergo, it is one of the sacred places of Islam as well. Christians are allowed to celebrate the Ascension here on the Ascension Feast Day.

The Church of St Mark is a Syriac Orthodox church in the Armenian quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Syriac Christians were the first people who adopted Christianity as indigenous people of the Holy Land.

Syriac is the Aramaic dialect Jesus spoke. The oldest surviving liturgy in Christianity is served in Syriac.

Syriac Orthodox Church is an Oriental Orthodox church that is autonomous and doesn’t belong either to Rome or Constantinople.

The Church of St Mark is one of the most beautiful churches I have seen in Jerusalem and one of Jerusalem’s religious sites that shouldn’t be missed out in Israel.

The MOUNT OF OLIVES is a Christian holy place and a Jewish holy site. According to the Old Testament, King David ran away from the Mount of Olives when his son rebelled. For Jewish believers, the Messiah will descend on the Mount of Olives and enter Jerusalem through the Golden Gate on Judgment Day.

Christians believe that Jesus went from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Also according to the New Testament, Jesus was arrested on the Mount of Olives.

The GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE is another holy site of Christianity in Jerusalem. It is the garden on the foot of the Mount of Olives where Jesus prayed the night before he was arrested and crucified.

The Church of All Nations, also called the Basilica of Agony, is located in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Garden of Gethsemane and the Basilica of Agony are Christianity’s sacred places.

The BASILICA OF AGONY, or the Church of All Nations, is a church just next to the olives of the Garden of Gethsemane. Bethlehem is one of the most important holy cities of Christianity since it is the birthtown of Jesus Christ. Since Jesus is a prophet for Muslims, Bethlehem is also a holy city of Islam. But Bethlehem is also the birthtown of King David, the Israeli’s second king, and therefore a sacred place of Judaism. Jerusalem and Bethlehem are the most important two holy cities for Christianity. The Milk Grotto in Bethlehem is a sacred place for Muslims and Christians.

The Tomb of Rachel is the burial site of Rachel, who was the wife of patriarch Jacob and who died while giving birth to son Benjamin.

The Tomb of Rachel is a Jewish, Christian, and Muslim pilgrim site. Biblical Rachel was childless for many years but eventually gave birth to her sons Joseph and Benjamin. Sadly, she died while giving birth to the latter. Therefore, the Tomb of Rachel is a pilgrimage site on the West Bank, especially for women who want to conceive.

7 km east of Nazareth, there is a Christan religious site on Mount Tabor in Galilee which is believed to be the place of Jesus’ transfiguration.

Mount Tabor is a special holy place in Israel where the connection between humanity and the divine is visible in the sublime nature of Mount Tabor best experienced by hiking the mount. The elegant Church of the Transfiguration stands on Mount Tabor since the beginning of the 20th century. The church was designed by Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi who also designed, among others, the church on the Mount of Beatitudes and the Church of All Nations in the Gethsemane Garden.

4. Holy sites in Hebron

Ancient Hebron was one of the holiest cities of the Holy Land.

Hebron is a holy city of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The holy city of Hebron is the 5th holiest city in Islam, the 2nd holiest city in Judaism, and a holy city in Christianity.

The Tombs of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in Hebron is a sacred site to all Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

It is the burial site of three prophets and their wives – three biblical couples: Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebeckah, and Jacob and Leah. Abraham bought this property with the Cave of Machpelah – Cave of the Double Tombs about 2,000 BC as the burial place for his wife Sarah and himself.

It is also called the Sanctuary of Abraham or Ibrahimi Mosque by Muslims. The Tombs of the Patriarchs in Hebron is the 2nd holiest site in Judaism, after the Western Wall. It is also a sacred site for Christians. To Muslims who refer Abraham to be a prophet of God, the Cave of Machpelah is the fourth holiest site in the World. This over 2000-year-old complex with the tombs of the prophets looks like a walled fortress. Herod the Great built the complex with an open roof to the sky. The complex is divided into 3 sections. Each section holds the cenotaphs of a prophet and a wife. Actual graves are in the caves beneath the cenotaphs.

The complex today is divided into two sides: a Muslim side with a mosque and a Jewish side with a synagogue. The mosque holds the cenotaphs of Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac and Rebekah. The synagogue holds the cenotaphs of Jacob and Leah, although all cenotaphs can be seen from each side through small openings.

Jewish people are not allowed to enter the mosque side while Muslims are not allowed to access the synagogue side, except on a mutually agreed few days a year.

As a Christian, I was allowed to enter both sides. And although I hadn’t initially planned to visit Hebron in my Israel and the West Bank itinerary , Hebron became one of the highlights of my trip. I came to the Tomb of the Patrichas and Matriarchs compound just before the afternoon prayers started. I visited the mosque part first, and then the synagogue part. I stood in the compound listening to the simultaneous prayers of a rabbi and an imman. They were praying to God, the God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and their descendants (all of us!).

5. Holy sites in the Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee is an important Christian site where according to the Holy Bible Jesus calmed the water and asked Peter, James, John, and Andrew to follow Him.

Capernaum is the hometown of Jesus’ miracles and the hometown of His first apostles: the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James, and John, and the tax collector Mathew. Today beautiful Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles stands on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in ancient Capernaum. 6. Holy sites in Haifa

Haifa is the third-largest city in Israel with some exquisite sacred places for Christianity, Islam, and the Bahai Faith.

The Muhraka (the Horn of Carmel ) monastery is a Carmelite monastery on the top of the Carmel mount in Haifa and the place where the prophet Elijah lived and fought the prophets of Baal.

Elijah, meaning ‘Yahweh is my God’ is a famed prophet and an important prophet for Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Druze.

Mount Carmel means ‘the God’s vineyard’.

The Muhraka monastery on Mount Carmel near Haifa is a sacred place for Jews, Christians, and Muslims and one of the most popular holy sites in Israel. A Catholic religious order called the Carmelite Order was founded here more than 800 years ago.

The views over the Jezreel Valley from the monastery are nothing less than spectacular.

7. Holy sites in Akko

The Old City of Acre (Akko), popularly known as the Crusaders’ town as once it was the home of the Templars,  is one of the UNESCO sites in Israel.

The House of Abbud is a house in the center of the Old City of Akko where the founder of the Bahai Faith lived.

The Bahai Faith was founded by a man called Bahá’u’lláh, meaning the Glory of God. Baha-Ullah was Bab’s main follower. He was expelled from Teheran and lived his last 32 years in Akko. He died and was buried in Akko.

The House of Abbud is recognizable for its white-painted walls and turquoise windows. In this house, Baha-Ullah lived for a few years and composed the principles of the Bahai Faith summarized in the Bahai’s Holy book called Aqdas.

The Bahji mansion with the Shrine of Baha-Ullah is the holiest place for the Bahai Faith. 

The Shrine of Baha-Ullah holds the tomb of Baha-Ullah surrounded by beautiful Persian gardens and stands next to the Bahji mansion, which was a summer house in which Baha-Ullah spent his last years of life. The Bahji mansion is located in Bahji at the northern edge of Akko about 1.2 miles (2 km) from the center of Akko.

8. Holy sites in Safed

TZFAT or SAFED is the City of Kabbalah and it is one of the four holiest cities for Jews.

Four Jewish holy cities with holy places of Judaism are Jerusalem, Hebron, Tiberias, and Safed.  There are four main sacred places of Judaism in Safed:

The Tomb of Rabbi Shimon is the burial site of the author of the Book of Zohar (the main textbook of Kabbalah), one of the most important Judaism sacred sites in Israel and a Jewish place of worship.

The tomb is located on Mount Meron 6 miles (10 km) from Safed. Rabbi Shimon lived in the 2nd century and taught mystical Kabbalah which covers the esoteric dimension and the deepest secrets of the Torah.

The Sephardic Synagogue of the Ari is the oldest synagogue in Safed. The synagogue was called ‘Elijah the Prophet’ but over time got renamed after Rabbi Ari who came to Safed in the 16th century to share his knowledge of Kabbalah.

According to some beliefs, the Abuhav Synagogue was miraculously transported from Spain to Safed. The Abuhav Synagogue was named after a 15th-century famous rabbi and kabbalist Abuhav.

Why is Jerusalem a holy city ?

Jerusalem is a holy city of 3 major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem is the holiest city of Judaism, the holiest city of Christianity, and one of the 3 major Islamic holy cities (along with Mecca and Medina).

Why is Jerusalem important ?

Jerusalem is called the holiest city in the world. Jerusalem is important to all Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Jerusalem holds the Temple Mount which is considered to be the holiest place in Jerusalem. The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism where once the First Temple (or the Great Temple of Jerusalem) built by King Solomon stood. The temple held the Ark of the Convent with the Ten Commandments. But, for Muslims, the Temple Mount is Haram Al-Sharif (or the Noble Sanctuary), the site where Prophet Muhammed ascended to Heaven from the Earth on a winged horse during his Night Journey. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is the holiest Christian site in the world since it is the site where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected.

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is the holiest site in Judaism where once the First Temple (or the Great Temple of Jerusalem) built by King Solomon stood . The temple held the Ark of the Convent with the Ten Commandments .

The Temple Mount is believed to be the place of the Biblical Mount Moriah with a sacred rock on which Abraham planned to sacrifice his son Isaac to God. The Temple Mountain is the holiest site in Judaism holding the Foundation Stone where Earth was created. The Wailing Wall , (or the Western Wall, Kotel HaMa’aravi  in Hebrew), is the last remaining wall of the Temple Mount where once the ancient Solomon’s Temple of Jerusalem and the Holy of Holies – the Gate to Haven stood. The Holy of the Holies is the most sacred site in Judaism.

Why is Jerusalem important to Christians ?

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is the most important and the holiest Christian site in the World where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected . The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem holds the Stone of Anointing (also called the Stone of Unction ), the Golgotha Hill (also called the Calvary , or the Place of the Skull ) where Jesus was crucified, the Aedicule Chapel (the Mausoleum) with the Tomb of Jesus and the Angel Stone (the stone door which was used to close the tomb of Jesus). For that, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is the holiest site in Christianity.

Why is Jerusalem important to Muslims ?

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is also called Haram Al-Sharif (or the Noble Sanctuary ) by Muslims. Haram Al-Sharif in Jerusalem is the site where Prophet Muhammed ascended to Heaven from the Earth on a winged horse during his Night Journey. Haram Al-Sharif in Jerusalem is the 3rd holiest place in Islam, after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina. On that account, major Islamic holy cities are Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.

There is so much to see and do in Jerusalem that it can be overwhelming. I'm glad I went with a tour group but I'd like to go again on my own.I'll certainly use this guide when I do, thank you!

There are some truly beautiful sights here. It's always amazing to remember how much the major religions of the world share, despite the differences that seemingly drive them apart. I would love to make a visit here one day to learn more about all of the faiths. This is a great compilation and description of the sights. Reading thru them, I was especially intrigued by the Mount of Beatitudes and the Bahai Gardens and would especially like to visit those.

I was interested to see that Hebron became the highlight of your visit, and wondered what prompted that. There is clearly an immense amount of information to see and absorb in a visit like yours. I can imagine it would take a long time to sink in and be digested after your trip.

Thousands of Christians travel to the Holy Land each year to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and discover the land of the Bible. Israel is undeniably the ultimate destination for those seeking to embrace a deeper connection to their faith. The country is full of sites that are significant to both the Old and New Testament, historically and religiously. Here is a list of 10 must-visit sites for Christian tourists in Israel.

Via Dolorosa

Also known as the Way of Sorrows, the Via Dolorosa follows the path Jesus took from his trial to his crucifixion, and finally to the tomb where he was laid to rest. Today, there are 14 Stations of the Cross that mark this route. Pilgrims can stop at each point and reflect on the pain of Jesus's journey.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built upon the site of Jesus's crucifixion, known as the Calvary or Golgotha. For this reason, it is considered one of the holiest sites by the many Christian pilgrims who visit each year. The church also contains the last four Stations of the Cross as part of the Via Dolorosa.

Garden Tomb

The Garden Tomb is one of several sites considered by many to be the location of Jesus's burial. The tomb was discovered in 1861 and contains a double chamber where visitors are welcome to explore. The surrounding gardens are a peaceful place to reflect and pray. Communion is offered in the garden as well.

The highest point in ancient Jerusalem, Mount Zion is also located in the Old City of Jerusalem. Those who visit Mount Zion can see the Tomb of King David as well as the Upper Room, where Jesus and his disciples held the Last Supper.

Mount of Olives

Once covered in Olive groves, the Mount of Olives is a ridge just outside of Jerusalem mentioned several times in both the Old and New Testaments. This is the site of Jesus's ascension into heaven as well as a place that he would often go to pray and rest during his life. The ridge commands stunning views of Jerusalem and is the ideal spot to contemplate the miracle of Jesus's ascension.

Though it is located in the disputed Palestinian territories and security should be considered before visiting, Bethlehem is a must-see for any Holy Land tour as it is the birthplace of Jesus. Highlights of any visit to Bethlehem include the Church of the Nativity as well as Shepherd's Field, where the angels appeared to a group of shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus.

Sea of Galilee

Jesus spent quite a bit of time on the Sea of Galilee with his fisherman disciples, and this is where some of his most well-known miracles took place. Today's visitors can enjoy sailing on the Sea of Galilee in a replica of the type of fishing boat that Jesus and his disciples would have used. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the lake and imagine what it would feel like to watch Jesus approaching the boat as he walked on the water.

Described by all four gospels as the center of Jesus's public ministry, Capernaum is located on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Today the village is also known by its nickname, "the town of Jesus." It was in the town of Capernaum where Jesus performed the miracles of healing the Centurion's servant, driving out an impure spirit, healing Simon Peter's mother-in-law, and healing the paralytic man. Visitors to the town can see the House of St. Peter as well as the town's restored synagogues and churches.

The town of Nazareth, near Mount Tabor, is Jesus's childhood home. Those visiting Nazareth will see Mary's Well, where Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel to announce that she would give birth to the Son of God. There is also the opportunity to visit the Church of the Annunciation, a church built in honor of this significant event.

Yardenit is the famous site of Jesus's baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Today, visitors can take the opportunity to follow in Jesus's footsteps and be baptized in the river. There is also a nearby Visitors Center where travelers can shower, change, and obtain white robes for their baptism.

Visiting The Holy Land – A List of Holy Land Sites in Israel & Palestine

The modern day state of Israel and the Palestinian territories are home to a great range of Holy sites, known to be part of “The Holy Land”. There are also more sites in Lebanon, Western Jordan southwestern Syria, however most of the sites and those most prominent are located in Israel and in Palestine. Middle Eastern politics aside, this is a fascinating area to explore with so much history to offer, especially for Christians, Jews and Muslims. The birthplace of Jesus is here, as is his childhood town, many biblically referenced sites and so much natural beauty that I just couldn’t fathom all that was happening throughout my one week trip! Here’s a list of Holy Land Sites in Israel & Palestine to help facilitate your visit…

Jerusalem is an incredible place to be and is one of those cities you could never spend enough time, however it is not always safe to visit so be sure to keep yourself updated with current events. For Christians, the most important sites are the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the Church of All Nations. Also be sure to look out for the Mount of Olives (easily in view from Jerusalem old town).

Church of the Holy Sepulchre – Believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Church of St. John the Baptist – This is where Jesus is believed to have said his last prayers before being betrayed by Judas.

Church of All Nations – The birthplace of St. John, known for having baptized Jesus.

Bethlehem (Palestine)

Bethlehem is perhaps the most important place to visit in the Holy Land, as it is the birthplace of Jesus and home to the Church of Nativity (under which Jesus was born, marked by a 14-pointed star set in the ground). Before visiting, do note that it is easier to visit with a tour group as Israeli Nationals cannot enter Bethlehem given that it is located in Palestinian territories, so there is a check point you will need to cross (bring your passport!)

The name, “Jesus of Nazareth” is of course due to the city of Nazareth being where Jesus spent his childhood days, making this another very popular site for Christians visiting Israel. The main attraction in Nazareth is the Basilica of the Annunciation, the largest Christian Church in the Middle East.

Jericho (Palestine)

Believed to be the world’s oldest city, Jericho is a whopping 10,000 years old and a major tourist destination for visitors to the area. Jericho is renowned for its’ biblical references, such as when Joshua fought Jericho “and the walls came tumbling down!” Remember to bring your passport if planning to visit Jericho, as it is located within Palestinian territories (Image via Tamar Hayardeni ).

Old Jaffa, Tel Aviv

In modern day Tel Aviv it might be difficult to envision an old historic town like Old Jaffa (also known as Japho or Joppa). This old port town is referenced throughout the bible in stories of Jonah, Solomon and Saint Peter. It is busy and full of life on weekdays or choose to visit on Shabbat (Saturdays) for a deserted Jaffa.

Other Holy Land Sites in Israel

Israel is full of biblical references everywhere you go. Because I was only there for a week, there simply wasn’t time to see and do it all. Here are some other highlights:

Qasr el Yahud – the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. The Jesus Trail – follows in Jesus’ footsteps in the Galilee, running from Nazareth to Capernaum. Now a hiking trail for visitors. Capernaum – “The town of Jesus”, how to a few churches and a museum celebrate the life of Jesus. Tabgha – the site where Jesus fed five thousand people (with five loaves and two fish). Bethsaida – home to the three Apostles, Peter, Andrew and Philip, and a number of miracles by Jesus.

Each and every year thousands of tourists embark on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a desire to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Israel is the ultimate destination for anyone seeking a connection to the roots of their faith, as it is abundant with both Old and New Testament sites. Here is a list of the top significant Christian sites of Israel. We invite you to share your experiences if you already visited these sites during one of our Israel tours !

Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee is not only known for its significance in the New Testament, but it’s also Israel’s largest freshwater lake and primary source of drinking water. The famous lake is known according to the gospels as the place where Jesus would minister to the people of Israel and it is believed that Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount on a small hill on the north-western shore of the lake. He also walked over the waters of the lake, fed five thousand people and found a few of his disciples while they were working as fishermen.

The Sea of Galilee is a popular tourist site for those that would like to walk the paths that Jesus walked. You can also enjoy a St. Peter’s Fish meal , a beautiful sunset and see a boat from the times of Jesus discovered in 1986 and now displayed in the Yigal Alon Museum in Kibbutz Ginosar. Sailing on the Sea of Galilee is without a doubt one of the most tranquil experiences one can have and provides a wonderful opportunity for reflection and prayer.

Yardenit is a popular site in the Jordan River believed to be the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Matthew 3 13: “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.

Located to the south of the Sea of Galilee, the site receives around half a million tourists and pilgrims each year. Entry to the site is free and visitors can rent or purchase baptism robes. There is plenty of space to relax with friends and family, pray in the well-kept quiet areas or visit the gift shop. After your baptism, you will have access to showers.

Capernaum is an ancient fishing village located in the northern portion of the Sea of Galilee and known as the center of Jesus’ ministry and is often referred to as “the town of Jesus”. This special town is mentioned multiple times in the New Testament and, according to the Gospels, this is the place where Peter, Andrew, James and John also lived.

In this site you will find ruins that date back to the 1st and 6th century. You will also get to visit a church built on top of the traditional site of St. Peter’s house. This is where it is believed that Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law and performed miracles. Inside the house archeologists found Jesus’ name several times and 131 inscriptions in four languages that essentially prove the validity of the house.

Bring your Bible and enjoy the quiet areas around the site! Capernaum is one of those places in Israel that brings the scriptures to life.

Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives is located on the east side of Jerusalem and is also believed to be the place where Jesus ascended to heaven. While the Mount of Olives is mentioned 3 times in the Bible, it is Jesus’ third visit that we remember the most. It all started with the Last Supper in Jerusalem and ended in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives where Jesus was eventually arrested to face trial.

The olive trees that have grown in the area for thousands of years are located around the slopes of the Mount that surround the spot where Jesus prayed with his disciples before his crucifixion and where the Eastern Orthodox Church believes the Virgin Mary was buried and ascended into heaven.

Via Dolorosa

The Via Dolorosa is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem believed to be the path that Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion. The trail includes 14 stations based on events that occurred on the way to the Golgotha hill, which was the site of the crucifixion and where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is located.

Every Friday a procession organized by the Roman Catholics starts at the first station and sometimes reenact the events along the way to the 14 station.

Garden Tomb

Considered by some Christians to be where Jesus was buried and resurrected, the Garden Tomb is a spiritual site visited by thousands of tourists every year. The tomb is surrounded by beautiful gardens perfect for worship and reflection.

The site is open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 8:30am to 5:30pm, however reservations are suggested in advance. You will also find a small gift shop perfect for souvenirs!

Church of Holy Sepulchre

The Church of Holy Sepulchre , built in 325/326, is located at the end of the last four stations of the Via Dolorosa and is therefore one of the most visited Christian sites in the world. The church is the other site believed by many to contain the place where Jesus was crucified and also the location where he was buried and resurrected.

The complex structure is said to have 30 chapels and worship spaces. You can start your tour descending a flight of stairs covered with crosses left by thousands of pilgrims. The stairs lead you to where Queen Helene found the piece of the cross believed to be used to crucify Jesus.

Some Christians believe the Garden Tomb is where Jesus was buried and resurrected, however the significance of this church in understanding early Christianity is immense and worth exploring! The lines to tour the church can be long!

A Guide to Israel’s Holy Sites

The land of Israel (‘known as ‘Eretz Yisrael’ in Hebrew) may be the homeland of the Jewish people, but it is also home to Baha'i Faith followers, Christians and Muslims. Many of the ancient landmarks in the country are holy to them too, so let’s take a look at some of Israel's holy sites, and see what significance they have to their respective pilgrims:

Jerusalem Christian Holy Sites

Multi-denominational Christian holy sites in Jerusalem

1. Church of the Holy Sepulchre - Famous for being the place at which Christ was crucified, buried, and resurrected, this site was built by Constantine the Great in 326 CE. In the heart of the Old City, Its magnificent interior contains the tomb of Jesus, the anointing stone, and Calvary itself (with two chapels, one in which visitors can view the Rock of Golgotha). It is regarded by all Christian denominations as an extremely sacred site. 2. Tomb of the Virgin Mary - Located in the Kidron Valley , at the bottom of the Mount of Olives , this is believed by Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox to be the burial place of Mary, the mother of Jesus. 3. Church of All Nations  - The Church of All Nations (also known as the Basilica of Agony) is a prominent Roman Catholic church perched on the Mount of Olives. Its interior is lined with golden mosaics depicting the suffering of Jesus and it is said that this is the spot at which Jesus prayed, before his arrest by the Romans. Its distinctive dome and Corinthian columns hint at its Byzantine heritage.  4. Dormition Abbey - Built in the 5th century, this Benedictine community lies on Mount Zion , just outside the Old City.  It was on this spot - according to tradition - that the Virgin Mary died. 5. Garden of Gethsemane - This garden has great significance in the Christian tradition, as it is supposedly the place where Jesus prayed before his arrest and subsequent crucifixion. Gethsemane (which means ‘olive press’ in Aramaic) has several olive trees in its garden.

7. Church of St Alexander Nevsky –  this Russian Orthodox Church is built over the remains of what historians believe was the ‘Judgment Gate’ where Jesus passed on his way to Calvary. Oriental Orthodox holy sites in Jerusalem

8. Cathedral of St. James - This 12th-century Armenian church lies near the Zion Gate and was constructed in 1163 during the reign of Queen Melisende. According to tradition, in its walls is buried the head of St James the Great and the body of St James the Less. Protestant holy sites in Jerusalem

9. Lutheran Church of the Redeemer - This Evangelical church is of part German heritage and was founded in 1898 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II.  The church has a prominent bell tower and visitors walking up the circular staircase are afforded astonishing views of Jerusalem at forty meters.  10. The Garden Tomb -  popular with Evangelical and Anglicans, the Garden Tomb is a non-denominational site with a rock-cut tomb. Located just outside the Old City Walls,  some Protestants consider it to be the site of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. Galilee and Northern Israel Christian Holy Sites

1.  The Jordan River - The Jordan River has great significance in the Bible as it is the border of the land that God gives to the Israelites. Flowing through the Sea of Galilee and down to the Dead Sea , it is not just a boundary and a crossing but, in Christian terms, a metaphor for rebirth and salvation. Today, pilgrims around the world come to be baptized here (see Yardenit below). 2. Nazareth - This famous town is home to the Church of the Annunciation , which was built on the spot where the Virgin Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel. This breathtaking Basilica is 50 meters high and home to the Grotto of the Annunciation and Mary’s Well, where Mary was told she was going to give birth to the son of God, Jesus. 3. Cana - This small village in Galilee is the spot where, according to the Gospel of John, Jesus turned water into wine at the marriage celebration of a poor couple. 4. Mount Tabor -  Mount Tabor is widely regarded as the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus as, according to the Gospels, this was the place that Jesus was ‘transformed into light’ and spoke to Moses and Elijah the Prophet. 5. Tsipori - According to tradition, this spot - close to Nazareth - was the original home of Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anne. It is also the place at which Joseph and Mary settled with Jesus, on return from Egypt.

Jewish Holy Sites in Israel

1. Tomb of King David - Located near the Zion Gate in the Old City, near the Abbey of the Dormition, this is one of the top Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem, as it is regarded as the burial place of King David.  2. Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery - The Mount of Olives is home to an extraordinary Jewish Cemetery, which is over 500  years old and contains somewhere between 70,000 and 140,000 tombs with many notable rabbis and zionist leaders buried there. It also contains the tombs of three prophets Haggai, Zechariah , and Malachi, and pilgrims have come to pray there since the Middle Ages. 3. Western Wal l - The Western Wall (in Hebrew, the Kotel) is the last remaining wall dating back to the time of the Second Temple (the era of King Herod) and an extremely holy place for Jews, who come from around the world to pray and ask for blessings from God. Today it stands at 19 meters and its largest stone weighs 570 tonnes! 4. Mount Meron - Mount Meron, in Galilee, is home to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.  Each year, at the time of the Jewish festival of Lag B’Omer, tens of thousands of Jews come here as part of a pilgrimage, to pray at his burial site. 5. Tomb of Rabban Gamaliel of Yavne - Yavne is home to the tomb of Rabbi Gamaliel who, according to Jewish philosophy, was a great sage whose greatest achievement was ending the theological arguments that distinguished the houses of Shammai and Hillel.

Islamic Holy Sites in Israel 

1. Temple Mount - Also known as Haram al-Sharif, this Jerusalem site is home both to the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa mosque, the third holiest shrine in Islam. 2. Al-Aqsa Mosque - Muslims believe that this was the spot the Prophet Mohammed flew over, on his ‘Night Journey’ en route to Mecca.  Underneath it is the Al-Qibli Chapel, a Muslim prayer hall. 3. Dome of the Rock - The Dome of the Rock is located on the Temple Mount and, as well as being a holy shrine, is one of the oldest examples of Islamic architecture. Its distinctive gold-plated Dome can be seen across Jerusalem. The Well of Souls or Holy of Holies is a partly natural, partly man-made cave situated inside the rock. 4. Dome of the Chain - This domed and free-standing building is located east of the Dome of the Rock and was built between 681-692 CE by the Umayyads.

5. Mosque of Omar - Located next to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, this mosque was built in the 12th century on the site where Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab accepted the city's surrender from the Byzantines. Its 15-meter high minaret was built in 1465 by the Mamluks.

Bahai Holy Sites in Israel 

1. Baha'i Gardens, Acre -  this site in Acre marks the tomb of the founder, Baha' Allah, considered to be a prophet of the Baha'i faith. As such, it is the holiest place for members of the Baha'i people. 2. Baha'i Shrine & Gardens, Haifa -  this shrine, and the fantastically beautiful gardens surrounding it, was built as a memorial to one of the Baha'i faith's martyrs, Bab Mirza Ali Muhammad, executed by the Persian authorities in 1850.
