Clarks Desert Trek GTX

Clarks Originals products launched in Japan in 1973. The unique design of the center seam is backed by not only fashion but also ease of wear.

The symbol mark on the heel called Trek Man is the beginning of this desert trek.

The wide opening makes it easy to put on and take off, and the 2-eyelet lace provides a secure hold.

This is an all-weather model with GORE-TEX membrane. The sole uses a Vibram sole that is non-slip and has excellent durability, and the upper uses high-quality suede.

Welcome to The Esquire Endorsement. Heavily researched. Thoroughly vetted. These picks are the best way to spend your hard-earned cash.

Let's do this with reggae songs, considering how deeply Clarks shoes are embedded in Jamaican culture. If throwing on a pair of Desert Boots is like cueing up "No Woman, No Cry" and lacing up your Wallabees is like dropping the needle on "Stepping Razor," opting for a pair of Desert Treks is like tossing a few coins in the jukebox and putting on "54-46 (That's My Number)" by Toots and the Maytals. Unknown? By no means. But maybe not the first thing you'd think of, if only because a couple other iconic entries in the genre spring to mind in its place.

But "54-46" is a jam , and life without it would be a bit worse. So even if you've already got your DBs and your Wallees on deck, you'd be well served to consider the Desert Trek, too. Low-slung and a little off-kilter in its own distinctive way, it's exactly the sort of shoe you should add to your rotation. Here's why.

The vibes abound.

The first thing most folks notice when they look at the Desert Trek—the first thing you probably looked at, especially if you're just getting acquainted with the style—is that raised center seam running from tongue to toe. It gives the whole shoe a more crafty feel, showing the work that went into it even more obviously than, say, the welt on a pair of Desert Boots (which, as it happens, you'll also find on the Trek). But it also makes 'em feel a little funkier. The Trek is the shoe you wear with your patchwork denim and that breezy camp collar shirt with the hand-blocked print. It's the one you wear with a suit, but the loose and louche navy with a splash of tie-dye, not the tailored tan one you'd wear to work (save that one for your Desert Boots). Basically, the Trek is the shoe you need when you want to mix it up (within reason).

Comfort is king.

One thing that always gets me about Instagram ads for shoes that claim to "bridge the gap between dress shoes and sneakers" is that those shoes already exist . Clarks has been making 'em for years. And while they may not include any hyper-futuristic tech, that's okay, because those crepe rubber soles—those bouncy, supportive, long-wearing soles—do the job just fine. Better than fine, in fact. And when you combine them with a flexible leather upper that'll mold to your feet over time? Mwah! Just go ahead and insert a chef's kiss emoji here and send my complements to the, er, shoemaker.

They're a conversation starter.

While there's a decent chance a fellow fan will clock your Desert Treks as a sign of an in-the-know kindred spirit and strike up a conversation, let me give you a bit more than that. See the graphic of the little man at the heel with the bag slung over his back? Clarks calls him the "Trek Man," but fans in Jamaica were reminded of something else. Hence the Trek's other name, the "Bank Robber," which has persisted to this day. Something tells me Toots—and Bob, and Peter—would approve.

Clarks Originals is launching its first-ever capsule collection titled “Desert Trip” in partnership with luxury streetwear brand Aries.

The collaboration breathes new life into Clarks ‘ best-selling Wallabee and Desert Trek styles, melding them with Aries’ striking streetwear design aesthetics.

The Wallabee, which originally debuted in 1968, is a low-top moccasin-style silhouette now available in a Maple Combi colorway. The footwear is inspired by archival images from Clarks, crafted with lush premium suede uppers and contrasting hairs on the vamp. The soles of the shoe are stencil-stamped with the Aries Trip graphic and a psychedelic airbrushed design.

Additionally, the footwear features cotton and leather lace-up closures adorned with vibrant beading and faux snakeskin-embossed charms. Rounding out both styles, an Aries Trip and a suede Clarks Originals fob complete the footwear.

In a similar vein, the equally prolific Desert Trek, which first debuted in 1972, comes in a Brown Multi colorway. Along with the shoes, the collection also includes an eye-catching tie-dye shirt.

The apparel will be stocked globally in the U.S., U.K., Europe, Japan and Korea. 

Beyond Aries, Clarks has collaborated with an impressive list of brands and people in the past, including C.P. Company, Aimé Leon Dore, Wu-Tang Clan and BAPE.

Clarks was founded in 1852 in Somerset, Eng. by brothers James and Cyrus Clark. Today, the footwear brand operates in retail, wholesale, franchises and online channels in over a whopping 100 markets.

Aries was founded by Sofia Prantera and was birthed out of a deep infatuation with trash culture, outsider art, graphics and illustration.

Clarks Originals x Aries launches on June 9 in the U.S., and will be available to buy at clarksusa.com, ariesarise.com, Kith, Commonwealth and Concepts.

Mirroring the celebrations for its 35th anniversary, when it released an upgraded Desert Boot, the brand now celebrates in style by launching a modernized version of the 1970s Desert Trek Hi, created in collaboration with Clarks Originals . Stylish and modern, the Clarks Originals x BEAMS Desert Trek Hi maintains the soul of the original and brings a contemporary accent to the design.

The shoe features the signature central butted seam, a premium suede upper, and a crepe wedge sole, with comfort being guaranteed by the cushioned leather insole. At the back, a debossed leather heel decal adds a touch of contrast; the premium leather in a rich brown tone complements both the sand and the black colorways beautifully.
