Language: English Currency: Pound Sterling Time Zone: GMT Tipping: 10 to 12% is usual for hotels with 10 to 15% being usual for restaurants. In each case, it is not necessarily added to the bill. If a service charge has already been added, no further tip is required.

Home to two national parks by way of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, Yorkshire is the largest of England's counties and one of the most scenic. With its strong Viking heritage, picturesque villages and perfect mix of scenery and seaside, Yorkshire offers a diverse range of coach holidays offering weekend and longer breaks.

For those after a coastal break Scarborough is an impressive option. As the premier coastal resort in the region it offers an elegant promenade, style and some of the finest gardens in the country. The picturesque fishing village of Whitby also makes a popular excursion.

Theme-based coach holidays to Yorkshire allow fans of the hit TV shows 'Emmerdale' and 'Last of the Summer Wine' to take a filming location tour of the county's landmarks used in the programmes, like the inn known as The Woolpack. The 1940s Haworth Weekend are popular, as are coach trips to the ever-growing Harrogate Spring and Flower Show; in January 2013 the Spring show was voted Britain's best gardening event by readers of Which? Gardening. Later in the year various Christmas markets dot the county, like the one at Skipton with its bustling market and food stalls. Tea lovers can head to the quintessentially Yorkshire Betty's Tea Rooms in Harrogate and round the day off with a trip to a less quintessential Turkish spa.

Weekends by coach are available to explore medieval York , great shopping can be found at Leeds and Sheffield and there is also the chance to explore the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and Moors .

Yorkshire covers such an expanse that it would be difficult to cover everything in one go, although we've given it our best shot. Here is our run down of the top few:

Whitby As a maritime town, Whitby is bursting with character. The ruins of Whitby and St Hilda's Abbeys dominate the Whitby skyline, high on the East Cliff and are still used today by sailors as a landmark. Whitby also boasts a blue flag beach, which is the perfect place to visit on a sunny day. Don't forget to try some the locally sourced seafood on offer in traditional sea-shanty inns!

Harrogate This historic spa town has magnificent architecture, which serves as a reminder of Harrogate's regal era. Today, you can visit the 19 th  Century Royal Pump Room Museum which houses the original sulphur well. You can even take a Turkish bath in the Royal Baths Assembly Rooms which were built in 1897, or perhaps treat yourself to a delicious afternoon tea at Betty's Tea Rooms.

York and York Minster With 2,000 years of history squeezed into one breath-taking city, take time to meander through the twisting streets of York and explore the countless tearooms and traditional English pubs!Whilst at the York Minster cathedral be sure to visit the Quire, Treasury, Chapter House and Crypt. If you are feeling particularly energetic you can also climb up the central tower of the Cathedral for stunning views of the streets below.

Castle Howard As one of the grandest private residences in Britain, Castle Howard was built between 1699-1712. It has housed the Howard family for over 300 years and has some of the Castle been opened for public viewing. Explore the dramatic interiors followed by the impressive gardens.

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in Yorkshire, take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO):

Health and Travel Insurance  Travel insurance is recommended by all our tour operators and for some operators it is a condition of booking. When choosing a travel insurance please ensure it fully covers all your personal requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses, and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. As a British citizen you will obviously be entitled to free emergency health care on the NHS.

If you are visiting England from outside the United Kingdom and fall ill or are involved in an accident and are from an EU country or Switzerland, you can use a valid EHIC issued by your home country to access healthcare. Please note this is not an alternative to travel insurance.  Comprehensive travel insurance is advised for nationalities planning on visiting the UK.

For the latest information and travel advice regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19), please click  here

If you need to contact the emergency services whilst in the UK simply dial 999 or 112 to ask for an ambulance.

Crime  The United Kingdom is a safe place to visit, however, as with all countries please exercise common sense. Petty crime can occur so take your usual precautions such as not leaving luggage unattended, beware of pickpockets in tourist areas and leave valuables in the hotel safe.

Local Laws and Customs  Queuing is a British Institution - jump a queue at your own risk!

If you are visiting from outside of the United Kingdom, it is wise to check customs requirements before you travel. If you are planning to bring alcohol, tobacco or souvenirs into the country, you need to be familiar with the UK's custom laws. If you go over your allowances, you may have to pay tax or duty. It is worth checking the  HM Revenues and Customs website  before you travel.

UK Entry Requirements  When travelling between the UK, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man you may need to show a Border Force officer a document confirming your identity. In most cases an official form of identification such as a driver's license or an armed forces identity card will be ok. However, some airlines will insist you show a passport so please check before you travel.

If you’re from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein you can enter the UK with one of the following identity documents: a passport, an Irish passport card or a national identity card issued by an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, if you’re eligible to use one. The identity document should be valid for the whole of your stay.

If you’re from outside the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you must have a valid passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay. You may also need a visa, depending on which country you’re from. Please check  here  if a visa is required before you travel.

Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed God’s Own County. in general recognition for having the largest number of great people and great things in Britain.

Our Tours: Your bespoke tour can be for as long as you wish, from a single day to 7 days.

By enjoying a 7 day tour you really would see and experience the best of James Herriot’s Yorkshire and beyond! But if you only wish to spend just a day or a few days with us, we will show you the highlights of North Yorkshire.

If you would like to see a little more of the North of England we are also happy to take you on tours of the Lake District or Northumberland, Scotland or the Cotswolds, for as few or as many days as you wish.

Nothing like a coach tour

Enjoy the warm welcome that Yorkshire has to offer by staying at a hotel or bed and breakfast. This is not a coach trip; rather, you will be accompanied by a private guide in one of our luxury vehicles on a tour that has been designed specifically for you. Have you always wanted to go horseback riding in the Yorkshire Dales? Or fly in a light aircraft and circle the area? We are able to take care of such details on your behalf as part of the service we provide.

Travel and Accommodation

Wherever you are travelling from we will arrange to collect you and transfer you in comfort to your Yorkshire accommodation. Likewise at the end of your stay we will be very happy to take you to your onward travel at an airport, rail station, or even on to your next UK destination. In order to make the best use of your time whilst enjoying the tours with us, we recommend staying somewhere local. We have close links with many hotels and B & B’s in Thirsk, Bedale, Masham and Leyburn areas and can arrange the accommodation for you as part of the package.

You may want the luxury of Swinton Castle near Masham, a beautiful Garden Suite at The Carpenters Arms near Thirsk or simply a very comfortable B & B. Whatever you require, and subject to availability, we will organise this for you. New to 2023 is the possibility of staying as guests in a stately home between Bedale and Leyburn. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the full hospitality of the family who have lived in and owned the Hall and land for generations. Availability is limited and early booking is recommended. Please just let us know your accommodation requirements and we will use our contacts, check availability in a suitable establishment, and make all the arrangements for you.

Getting cheap coach tickets to York

As soon as you board your coach to York, you’re already on your way to a trip filled with incredible scenery, history and classically English culture.

Things to do in York

Where to eat.

If you’ve set aside a good budget for a nice meal out, Skosh is the restaurant for you. Quality but informal, Skosh serves up little plates for grazing or a course by course experience for larger dining appetites. It’s an ideal first stop as you take in the York nightlife.

Looking for something more casual? The Block is one of the premier independent pizza places in the city. Catering for everyone from carnivores to veggies and vegans, locals were quickly charmed by The Block’s fresh, street-style pizza, fair prices and friendly atmosphere. Order by the slice, or go all out, it’s your choice!

Penny’s Bespoke Foodhouse

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so ensure you fuel up before exploring the city with a trip to Penny’s. This sweet little cafe and coffeehouse boasts locally sourced produce in order to create some of the city’s finest breakfasts. No matter your order, it all comes at a great price too.

Where to drink

House of Trembling Madness

A staple of York nightlife for locals and visitors alike. This medieval-themed bar offers so many rare German and Belgian beers, it’s become an ale connoisseur’s paradise! Plus, with a shop in-house, you can take a souvenir away too.

The Drawing Board

This bar takes its name from the chalkboard covered walls that house it. Visitors are encouraged to doodle, sketch and scribble to their heart’s content, making each night’s decor entirely unique! For a fun and quirky atmosphere, The Drawing Board ticks all the boxes.

More into spirits? ...In the beverage sense that is. Evil Eye is on the Guinness book of records for most gins available to purchase! Sample a wide range of flavours with your favourite mixers or in speciality cocktails. There are plenty of mocktails for non-drinkers too! Be sure to enjoy your drink of choice on their colourful outdoor terrace for maximum enjoyment.

Top tourist attractions

York Minster Cathedral

Regarded as one of the world’s most incredible cathedrals, you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the majesty and creativity that fills its walls. From the beautiful stained glass windows to the classic stonework, you’re sure to find a sense of peace and tranquility as soon as you arrive.

Clifford’s Tower

See the sights of the city in a way like no other with a trip to Clifford’s Tower. This is almost all of the remnants of the old York Castle, still offering amazing panoramic views of York, and on a clear day, as far as North York Moors! Don’t miss your chance to step inside a true relic of English history.

York Art Gallery

With a constant stream of fantastic exhibitions, events and collections on show, York Art Gallery is the ideal destination for art lovers both big and small. Explore everything from paintings and pottery to ceramic decorations and the impressive automaton clock.

Where to shop

The Shambles

The street said to inspire the infamous Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, The Shambles features a host of unique shops and eateries along its cobbles. Long have the days passed since it was known as the place for locals to buy meat, you can now purchase anything from chocolate to jewellery and more.

Coppergate Shopping Centre

For something a little more contemporary, Coppergate is the modern shopper’s place to be. Home to the biggest names on the highstreet, including some delicious options for a bite to eat, you can easily find something special to treat yourself to.

Independent streets

From Stonegate to Fossgate and beyond, you’ll find a huge amount of hidden gems to keep the keenest of shoppers busy. If you’re willing to venture out far enough you’ll find Bishopthorpe Road (affectionately known as Bishy Road) a former winner of Best Local Parade in the GB High Street Awards. This popular area houses a number of award-winning shops and cafes and even has hosted its own Bishy Road Summer Party in the past.

Things to do for kids

York Dungeon

Part of a group of dungeons throughout the country, York Dungeon is a spooky journey into the city’s murky past. You’ll find yourself on the run from Saxon raiders, hunting for a witch and even taking a look at a few internal organs! Kids will love the over-the-top acting and audience participation.

Jorvik Viking Centre

Discover what life was really like during the Viking Age, from the boats and tools they used to the places they occupied. Kids will find out some amazing facts to share with their friends and see genuine Viking artefacts up close.

Although only available in the summer months, York Maze is worth the well-timed visit. Constructed from over 1 million maize plants, over a plot the size of eight football pitches, the maze is one of the largest in the world! With everything from dinosaurs on the loose to illusions to trick your mind, are you up to the challenge of finding your way out?

York in one day

Get cultural

Once you’re off your coach to York, you can begin exploring some of the fascinating museums on offer, such as York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and York St Mary’s. Or to see one of York’s biggest cultural attractions, head straight to York Minster to visit one of the UK’s finest cathedrals.

Find a unique treat

Once you’ve had your fill of York’s rich history and culture, explore the independent shops of the city and find the ideal souvenir. The Shambles is the perfect place to start, with a number of great shops and eateries to tempt you inside once you need to refuel.

Enjoy an evening of food & drink

Enjoy a hearty meal on the go with a slice (or two!) of pizza at The Block. Then make your choice from the incredible ales at The House of Trembling Madness, or sample some creative cocktails at Evil Eye.

Hidden gems

York Cold War Bunker

Operating from the 1960s to 1990s, this outdoor bunker was used to measure the impact of a nuclear attack and it’s fallout. Take a tour of the bunker, discover how it operated and delve into a whole new side of York’s past.

Kiosk: Project Space

Located on Fossgate, this tucked-away coffee shop is more than meets the eye. Kiosk is one part coffee house, combined with a seasonal kitchen and topped off with an art gallery, all in one cosy space! A feast for the senses, don’t miss out on the incredible breakfast options in particular.

Merchant Adventurers’ Hall

This former base for charity, religion and business is now a Grade 1 listed building as well as an engrossing museum of local history. Explore the beautiful timber-framed building, see the impressive collection of silver, furniture and paintings and finish off with coffee and cake in the medieval guildhall.
