Yanmar 3GM Series Marine Diesel Engines

Image showing the identification plate from a Yanmar 3GM30F Marine Diesel Engine

There are five main model variants of the Yanmar 3GM in circulation. The original 3GM engines were produced from 1980 to 1983 but were then upgraded to the 3GM30 engines for 1983 to 2005 when production ceased. The “F” indicates indirect cooling. The difference between the 3GM / 3GMF / 3GMD (20hp) and the 3GM30 / 3GM30F (24hp) is in the displacement and operating rpm of the engine, as well as the alternator output. See the table below for exact specs.

The difference between the 3GM and the 3GMD is that a different model of marine gearbox was fitted to the same engine body. The 3GM had a KBW10-D and the 3GMD had a KM3-A.

How is it cooled?

Is your engine raw-water or fresh-water cooled? Note that the raw-water cooled engines have no heat exchanger – the large unit on the top with “YANMAR” embossed on it.

Do you have a Japanese or a European Engine?

The Yanmar 3GM30 engine was available in two main variants. One was manufactured in Japan and is known as the 3GM30 and the other was partly assembled in Europe, in the Netherlands from the mid-80s, and is known as the 3GM30-YEU. The YEU variant has an “E” at the beginning of the serial number although notice that the label still has “made in Japan” at the base (both shown in the image). The YEU varient is identical to the Japanese engines in most ways but the raw water pump is an area where the two engines differ. So if you are changing the impeller, be sure to pick the correct guide for your engine.

How much lubricating oil does a Yanmar 3GM need?

For an oil and filter change on the Yanmar 3GM, plan to have 3 quarts (3.5 litres) of mineral oil on hand . With the new filter on, pour in 80% of the oil, decompress the cylinders and then turn the engine using the cranking handle for 20 seconds or so. Then use the dipstick to top the oil off.

Yanmar 3GM30 engine: information needed on rebuilding

  • Add to quote

I am looking for information on rebuilding a Yanmar 3GM30F engine. Does anyone have experience with getting overhaul parts at good prices? Anyone have access to a service manual? I also will need an exhaust elbow. Thanks!

Believe that service manual is available for download on line. Thinking many of these parts are interchangeable with Yanmar tractor diesels if you can id to equivalent motor. Take a look at "Hoye tractor parts" web site.

Try l-36.com for the manual. Torrensen.com for parts. Not cheap!

Our boat has a rebuilt 3gm30f. The previous owner had the old A4 removed and replaced with one. In all he had a rebuilt 3gm30f with it's associated parts, ie; fuel tank, wiring etc., a new transmission, driveshaft and stuffing box all replaced. Total cost was $12,000. The parts are easy to find but don't use regular Yanmar tractor parts, use there marine grade parts only. There is a difference.

I did a "top" overhaul on my 3GM30 a couple years ago. Replaced the head, valve train, heat exchanger tank, injectors, injector lines, mixing elbow. I did the work myself with no prior experience. I'm in Alaska, ordered my parts thru Gallery Marine in Seattle (good guys to work with). I purchased a Seloc Yanmar service manual and a Yanmar parts book. Parts were expensive, I bought new and didn't shop around (I was doing this right in the middle of our prime sailing season). The only thing we had trouble finding was a head gasket.

Since Yanmar builds their own engines, not getting an industrial engine from someone else and marinzing it, you don't see the big difference is parts price like you do with engines like Universal. And it seems that Yanmar dealers have regions that the parent company allows them to sell to that limits price competition. Still better than Volvo however.

JimsCAL said: And it seems that Yanmar dealers have regions that the parent company allows them to sell to that limits price competition. Click to expand...

THANKS, GUYS, FOR THE SUGGESTIONS. NOW, HERE IS THE PLAY-BY-PLAY SUMMARY OF THE YANMAR PARTS GAME. LISTEN UP, Y'ALL: I have spent hours online and on the phone trying to beat the bloated prices that Yanmar demands for replacement parts. The Company has a lockdown on their distributors, including fixed prices and limited sales territories. If you're in Louisiana, as I am, you can't shop. You buy from the bayou guy. You buy bayou. Period. Carlos Slim, the Mexican megalo-monopolist, could take lessons from these tyrants. You can't even get a Parts Manual without paying the Company $80 and waiting for the mail to arrive. Oil pumps jumped 50% in price in the last two weeks. Torresen Marine adds 10% to the already outrageous Yanmar prices. As suggested by HUGOSALT, I attempted an end run, surreptitiously calling Yanmar tractor parts suppliers using Yanmar marine parts numbers (meticulously gathered by squinting at websites and diagrams for hours). I reasoned that Giants in the Earth might get better prices than Yachties in the Club. From Hoye Tractor Parts, great guys by the way, I managed to get some cross-references and tractor model numbers. But Big Daddy YanBucks has his thumb on the tractor guys too. Their tractor parts are even more expensive than their marine parts. I imagine that farmers with unplowed fields are more desperate for parts than yachties with warm Daiquiris. So, Yanmar sticks it to the hayseeds with vigor. I then tried a "Chinese-Fire-Drill" end run, looking at Chinese suppliers of "after-market" parts (translation: counterfeit parts). The ebay ads are enticing: Yanmar ring sets are $16 instead of $50 each. I lusted after high-pressure fuel injector tubing and oil tubing. My engine is covered with rusty spiderwebs of this stuff. Basically, the parts are steel tubes with flare fittings and nuts on the ends --- your basic steel soda straws with threads. Should be about $8 each. Yanmar wants $45 each.. I need an armload. Uber-Alas, the Chinese can sell you most any part you need for current-production tractor and excavator parts. But the Yanmar engine model 3GM30 has been out of production for about 9 years, except in Europe where the Japanese are shipping boatloads of new engines to the Continentals and the Brits like a latter-day Marshall Plan. For me, a damn Yankee, it's No Tickee, No Washee. I am resigned to buying from Tyrant-osaurus Wrecks, Inc. and paying their exorbitant prices. I do, however, have a line on some salvaged Yanmar engines. I may rob Piston to pay Poppet, making one good engine out of two, even rebuilding a third engine to sell. The profits could pay for all this mechanical mayhem. There is a silver cylinder lining to this tale. The Chinese suppliers have websites with hyper-interactive chat features. Their salespeople are often lovely young, educated women who seem quite attracted to mature American men. I won't go into detail except to say that the off-site Skype conversations have been enchanting. SO, HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE ON YANMAR PARTS, GUYS: Forget the tractor dealers. Forget price competition among retailers. If you have a current-production Yanmar Engine, try the Chinese entrepreners at Manufacturers, Suppliers, Exporters & Importers from the world's largest online B2B marketplace-Alibaba.com by entering the engine model and parts numbers. You might be able to cross-reference industrial parts and marine parts. Even if you can't find what you want, you will get an eyeful. You will find hard-driving manufacturers like America of the 1950's, but on digital steroids. You will learn why Walmart products are over 80% Chinese-made. You might even meet a lovely cherry blossom to brighten your day and fill your email inbox with unbeatable offers.

Having gone this route let me add my 2 cents. First, the correct engine service manual is free on my website. For all who need a manual for the Yanmar GM series, download it directly from this page. Yanmar Marine GM service Manual Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner, or I could have saved you some trouble. As for parts...I live in central Florida, and can't speak for Louisiana Yanmar dealers. However I've found a Yanmar dealer here who is always 20% lower on new parts than what you see online. Marine Pro Lastly, this same Yanmar dealer has a building ... not a room ... an entire building ... full of old engines they've pulled over the years. It's amazing in this day and age to see a business not part out their used inventory on ebay, but not all are computer literate. I found all the parts needed to rebuild a 1GM10 by wandering in and out of isles full of old Yanmar engines. That's the good news, now here's the bad news... these wonderful folks have no idea what's in this building. You have to show up in person and ask, and if they like you , in you go. Their prices are what you are looking for. Different State but not that far. Maybe this will help...maybe not... Good luck

No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

Alternative Moscow Tour – daily

Explore the unseen Moscow with your Moscow private guide and discover a range of sights during this alternative walking tour.  Away from the main tourist spots (in the central district of Kitay-Gorod), just a short walk from Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral, you suddenly find yourself in one of the trendiest districts of Moscow. This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
  • Khokhlovka Art Center, where Russian hipsters and street artists hang out
  • Samoskvorechye District where you can see beautiful streets and hear stories from old Moscow
