New Haven is one of many places to explore in the Constitution State.

If your idea of a great vacation involves scenic drives through the countryside, sunbathing on the beach, eating fresh seafood and strolling around towns rich in history and culture, it's time to plan a visit to Connecticut.

The word "Connecticut" takes its namesake from the Native American word "Quinnehtukqut" which references the river that runs through the state towards the Long Island Sound, which creates the state's iconic seaside border. Connecticut is a place whose essence is quite connected to its natural resources.

Although highly revered for its stunning fall foliage, outdoor adventures abound year-round, from sailing to skiing, and a cozy tavern is never far away if the weather turns bitter. The presence of an Ivy League university creates a rich cultural landscape, too, which rivals those of the state's more cosmopolitan neighbors. Read on to discover the best things to do in Connecticut.

(Note: Some of the following activities, attractions and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State and local tourism boards before traveling.)

Bluff Point State Park is an 800-acre park on a largely undeveloped peninsula between the Poquonnock River and Mumford Cove. Here you’ll discover pleasant trails for biking and hiking, with views over Long Island Sound.

Keep your eyes peeled for plenty of avian wildlife, and if you’re into fishing, bring your poles. Potential species to be caught include bluefish, striped bass, summer and winter flounder, blackfish, and more. With a permit, you can also fish for shellfish here.

Check out the historic homes in Wethersfield

One of the things that attracts many visitors to New England is its historic buildings. If you enjoy historic homes, make your way to Old Wethersfield. There you’ll come upon CT’s largest historic district, with over 100 pre-Civil War-era homes.

Escape to one of CT’s charming small towns

essex CT exterior of goods and curiosities shop

Small towns in New England are such special places. In Connecticut you can find many such villages and towns, perhaps even when you’re not looking for them. But to give you a few hints, here are a couple of the cutest small towns in Connecticut : Old Saybrook , Guilford, Kent, Storrs, and Simsbury.

Personally, I think Guilford is one of the cutest small towns in Connecticut and beyond!

For an excellent place to stay in/near these towns, consider one of these charming Connecticut cabins.

Visit Hammonasset Beach State Park

This is actually the largest shoreline park in the state, and Hammonasset Beach State Park is an excellent CT destination if you’re interested in spectacular Long Island Sound views.

There’s more than just sandy beach at Hammonasset, too, with camping sites, bicycle rentals, and Meigs Point Nature Center , where you’ll find educational programs like nature walks, touch-tank programs, and craft workshops, designed to teach visitors about the natural history and wildlife of coastal Connecticut.

Eat at the cafe that invented the hamburger

Louis’ Lunch in New Haven has the true record: they are the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich and the Library of Congress says so. Interestingly, there are many tales of haunted lighthouses in Connecticut.

Take a walk on the Niantic boardwalk

This walk isn’t very long, comprising just over 1 mile, but it’s a pleasant and relaxing place to take in views over Long Island Sound, and certainly one of the prettiest sights in Connecticut. Seriously, I think Niantic is such a darling little town on Long Island Sound!

Stroll downtown Milford

A waterfall in Milford CT in autumn

Okay, I absolutely adore Milford! This is such a cute Connecticut town, it definitely needs to be on your CT bucket list.

The Milford Green is one of the most historic greens in the region (and that’s actually saying quite a lot!) and the downtown area has lovely Milford Duck Pond with its very own little waterfall. This is just such a sweet place to explore and feels very quintessential New England.

Sample the delights at Jonathan Edwards Winery

Wine is, to me, one of my favorite parts of travel, if not life itself. The Jonathan Edwards Winery is a fabulous CT winery of a bicoastal nature: much of the harvest still comes from Wine Country itself, California’s Napa Valley.

Enjoy tastings and tours at this beautiful site and take home a bottle of your favorite to remember your Connecticut trip with, if you so choose.

Go camping in Pachaug State Forest

Get out in the wilderness in Connecticut’s largest state forest. Covering 24,000 acres, Pachaug State Forest presents countless opportunities to revel in the great outdoors.

There are several different campgrounds for pitching your tent (or parking your RV) and there is even a horse camp, so equestrians can enjoy the trails over several days.

Kent Falls State Park is a definite must visit in Connecticut, with a historic covered bridge, 250-feet of cascading waterfalls, and waterfall trails that let you get so close to the falls that you’ll feel the cool mist on your face.

This is hands down, one of the most popular parks in CT.

Visit Lover’s Leap State Park

Situated along the Housatonic River, Lovers Leap State Park was named after a centuries-old legend of a pair of star-crossed lovers who perished together in the river trying to reach one another.

That story has since been thoroughly debunked, but it’s still an interesting story to ponder as you explore this 160-acre state park with its hiking trails, historic ruins, and incredible views of the Housatonic, especially over the historic truss iron bridge that was originally erected in 1895.

Connecticut is a gorgeous state that offers a wide variety of activities for just about every kind of visit, whether you’re looking for coastal CT fun, historic points of interest, and beyond, there are things to do in Connecticut for everyone.

Just ninety miles long by 55 miles wide, CONNECTICUT is New England’s southernmost state and the most influenced by New York City; thousands of commuters make the trip each day, and many of the opulent mansions are owned by Wall Street bankers. As a result, tourism here is of a sophisticated sort, with art galleries, vineyards, historical houses, museums and increasingly eclectic cuisine on offer, while the state’s lesser-known natural offerings along the densely populated coast make for some pleasant surprises.

The coast is studded with enticing small towns, from the colonial charms of Mystic and Stonington to hip New London and intellectual New Haven, home of Yale University. Further inland, the state capital at Hartford is a real surprise, with a gradually regenerating downtown and a trio of attractions.

Connecticut History

The Constitution State (so called because Connecticut was the first American colony to have a written constitution ) is sprinkled liberally with lakes, rivers, and streams.

The state's namesake is the mighty Connecticut River , which springs from the Connecticut Lakes in northern New Hampshire , flows southward forming the boundary between New Hampshire and Vermont , cuts through Massachusetts and Connecticut, finally to empty into Long Island Sound.

The great river is navigable as far north as Hartford , a significant fact that was not lost on the region's Native American inhabitants. They were the ones who gave it the name Quinnehtukqut , "the long tidal river."

Almost three-quarters of the territory in Connecticut is woodland , and drives along the back roads through these forests reveal rich fields of corn, grain, vegetables, and tobacco. But the state's wealth comes not from agriculture, or from tourism, but rather from insurance and manufacturing .

In the old days the state's production of buttons, pins, doo-dads, and kitchenwares gave rise to the breed of men known as Yankee peddlers , who traveled from town to town in horse and buggy, spreading the products of Connecticut's industry far and wide. Later Connecticut Yankees such as Charles Goodyear, Eli Whitney, Seth Thomas, and Mr. Fuller (of Fuller Brush fame) pave the way for today's Connecticut products: helicopters, submarines, insurance, firearms and high-tech .

Connecticut, the southernmost New England state, is surrounded on the south by Long Island Sound, on the east by Rhode Island, on the west by New York State, and on the north by Massachusetts. Fairfield Country’s finger-like extension is a short drive from New York City. For a quick weekend getaway, Connecticut is the closest New England state to New York, Pennsylvania, and points south.

Sights for today’s tourists recollect these early influences, as well as Native American contributions, whose culture is still active in Connecticut. The last surviving whaling ship and a recreated 16th-century native Pequot village are just the beginning of the historical sites to visit, while a prestigious aquarium and famous amusement park keep kids entertained.

Connecticut Coast Visitors Guide

American history resonates throughout Connecticut. In Coastal Connecticut, unique towns are built upon layers of intriguing history. The bygone whaling era echoes in the streets of New London. New Haven is home to Yale University and is graced with its Gothic buildings and intellectual nuances. Here, art connoisseurs can enjoy museums that display paintings from masters such as Van Gogh, Manet, and Picasso.

Central Connecticut includes the capital city of Hartford, home to famous American writers Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe and the 37-acre Bushnell Park. Founded in 1636, this metropolitan city is flavored by a rich heritage. The Connecticut River Valley is alluring with its enchanting towns and countryside. Here, the unusual Gillette Castle at Hadlyme stands guard. The forests and lakes of the Litchfield Hills region offer natural beauty and numerous recreational opportunities including the Topsmead State Forest.

Central Connecticut Visitors Guide

The beauty of Central Connecticut will inspire any visitor. Literary greats Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe both resided in Hartford, the capital of Connecticut and the largest city in the area. Mark Twain House is a gothic mansion open to visitors, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center features her restored home and library. The Science Center of Connecticut is also found in Hartford and features live animals, hands-on exhibits and more. Bushnell Park is known for its carousel, a restored 1914 ride that welcomes visiting riders.

In West Hartford, the National Theatre for the Deaf features productions performed with the aid of American Sign Language as well as spoken word performances. Architecture fans will also enjoy a trip to Hatheway House in Enfield, one of the largest 18th-century homes in the state. Nature lovers will appreciate the Harry Barnes Memorial Nature Center in Bristol. This 70-acre park of field and forest features nature trails and an interpretive center.

Litchfield Hills, CT Visitors Guide

West of Hartford and east of New York State lies the charming area known as Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills. The defining geological feature of this area is the Housatonic River, which provides water to the villages and farms that line its path.

To enjoy the beauty of Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, a trip to Kent Falls State Park is an ideal start. The park is a short distance northeast of Kent, and the falls themselves—a 250-foot cascade—are a breathtaking sight. In Litchfield, the Tapping Reeve House and Law School is a unique attraction. It was the first law school in the state, and today remains furnished with 18th-century pieces. The Charles Ives Center for the Arts in Danbury is a 5,000 seat outdoor venue that is used for live performances and concerts. Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills also features a wealth of camping, hiking and biking opportunities.

Hartford Visitors Guide

Founded in 1636, Hartford is a metropolitan city that serves as Connecticut’s state capital. Famous American authors Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe once made Hartford their home. Today, Mark Twain’s House and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center are both open to the public and provide a fascinating look into the two authors’ lives. Visitors enjoy touring the Old State House, which was completed in 1796 and is considered the oldest statehouse in the United States.

Bushnell Park is another historic site, as it is the nation’s oldest public park. A variety of festivals and entertainment are found throughout the year at this park, including the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz—a three-day event in July. Art lovers appreciate the impressive collection at Wadsworth Atheneum, while history enthusiasts whet their appetites at the Museum of Connecticut History. Outdoor adventurers enjoy nearby Penwood State Park, where hiking, picnicking and cross-country skiing are popular pastimes.

Mystic, CT Visitors Guide

The seaside town of Mystic has a tidy downtown laced with shops, galleries, and antique stores. Nearby homes built for the rich sea captains of bygone days radiate charm. The 17-acre (7-ha) museum town of Mystic Seaport exhibits the workshops, buildings, and shops of 19th-century Mystic, with the paraphernalia of the whaling era, showcased in displays and films. The theater is also used to entertain and educate people about whaling and the lifestyle of the time.

Winding along the Mystic River is the Four Mile River Road. This natural area is a welcome place for bikers and hikers to trek-no cars allowed. The road meanders past an osprey sanctuary. Another appealing place to visit in the Mystic area is the Mystic Aquarium, which is home to over 6000 sea creatures. A visit to Olde Mistick Village provides shopping, restaurants, and entertainment in the guise of a historic New England village.

New Haven, CT Visitors Guide

New Haven was founded in 1637 by affluent puritans. Shipping and manufacturing were the mainstays upon which the economy was built, however, the focal point of New Haven is Yale University, a world-famous university founded in 1716. The university grounds are located in the heart of New Haven. Gothic buildings on campus stand as sturdy sentinels from the past creating a steadying influence accompanied by a certain mystique.

The Harkness Tower sings out at different times of day, filling the surrounding air with its carillon song—a sound that has called out to people for centuries. Handsome churches enfold the area. Several art museums with famous collections are on or near campus, while the Peabody Museum of Natural History is also located in the area. Each June, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas brings world-class art exhibits, performances and thinkers from around the world together.

Bridgeport, CT Visitors Guide

Situated on Long Island Sound, Bridgeport is a small city with much to offer. A big tourist draws to Bridgeport is the Captain’s Cove Seaport. Numerous restaurants fry up tasty seafood dishes and an array of unique shops can be found along the boardwalk.

Close by the port is Seaside Park. One of the first waterfront parks established in the United States, this beach offers sandy shores with picnic areas and sports fields. Each year an impressive fireworks display is fired off over the water as part of the Barnum Festival. Dating back to 1948, this festival is another heritage feature in Bridgeport. It boasts live bands, contests, a carnival, and other events and takes place between April and July. The only zoo in Connecticut, the Beardsley Zoo is an attraction for all ages to enjoy, featuring a range of exotic and endangered animals, including tigers, bears, and turtles.

The 20 Best Free Things to Do in Connecticut (2024 Guide)

Connecticut has many attractions; it can be hard to decide what to do first! However, that list of activities shrinks substantially when you’re on a budget. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place to find some of the very best free things to do in Connecticut.

Connecticut is full of opportunities to experience delightful entertainment, culture, and art, all while having a wonderful time and not breaking the bank.

From single adults looking for a fun night out on the town to families that want to explore the great outdoors, there are limitless options for everyone in Connecticut – and all without spending a dime!

Our top picks include parks, hikes, museums, and other areas you can visit any time of the year and have no-cost fun.

You’ll be shocked by all of the free things to do in Connecticut!

1. Explore the Elizabeth Park Rose Garden

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Elizabeth Park Conservancy (@elizabethpark_hartfordct)

Address: 1561 Asylum Ave, West Hartford, CT 06117

Website: https://www.elizabethparkct.org/

Did you know Connecticut is home to the oldest public rose garden in the US? And, it is entirely free. Elizabeth Park contains tens of thousands of individual rose bushes across many species of the Rosa genus .

The main garden, with a rose-covered gazebo, is the perfect date spot in Connecticut. You can also explore smaller side gardens incorporating startling colors and formations.

While Elizabeth Park is best known for its rose gardens, there are a few other notable sights. There is some nice stonework and archways at the entrances. You can also get a great view of the Hartford skyline from the lookout point across from the main entrance.

Playgrounds, sports fields, and open spaces provide plenty of free areas for whatever outdoor activity you love.

2. Hike a Section of the Appalachian Trail

Address: Various trail locations between Sherman and the MA-CT border

Website: https://appalachiantrail.org/explore/explore-by-state/connecticut/

The Appalachian Trail winds along the Appalachian Mountains for over 2180 miles. It is the longest hiking-only path in the world. The ‘AT’ stretches from Maine to Georgia, crossing 12 other states in the process, including Connecticut.

For about 50 miles through CT’s northwestern corner, the Appalachian Trail passes through towns like Salisbury, Sherman, and Kent.

While hiking any section of the trail will be a challenge, the views are certainly worth it! And, you’ll be able to tell your friends you hiked the Appalachian Trail! Well, sort of.

3. Go on a Paranormal Adventure

Address: Various locations

Website: N/A

Did you know Connecticut is home to many of the spookiest places in the country ? Whether you’re a believer in the paranormal or not, you can spend the day visiting some of these haunted locations.

Here are a few spots to get you started:

  • Union Cemetery (Easton, CT) — home of the “The Lady in White.”
  • Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery (Burlington, CT) — haunted by the “Green Lady.”
  • Center Church (New Haven, CT) — a crypt under the church holds tombstones from 1687
  • Fairfield Hills State Hospital (Newtown, CT) — a defunct mental institution with plenty of creepy sights in its halls.

Because these sights draw paranormal enthusiasts from across the state and beyond, access to certain areas may be limited. We recommend only touring these spots during the day to avoid trespassing.

4. Wander Around Mystic, Connecticut

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by ThinkMystic (@think_mystic)

Address: 1 E Main St, Mystic, CT 06355

Website: https://thisismystic.com/

The town of Mystic seems to have a little bit of everything. You can browse the shops downtown or at Olde Mistick Village. Alternatively, you can walk along the boardwalks at the seaport and surrounding areas. There’s even a working drawbridge dividing downtown.

Most people visit Mystic during the summer, when you can enjoy one of the nearby paid attractions, like the Mystic Aquarium or Mystic Seaport. However, winter in Mystic is just as picturesque! The many shops and homes decorate to give the sense of a colonial Christmas in Connecticut.

If you run out of free things to do in Connecticut’s Mystic area, we recommend driving to nearby Stonington. It has its own charm and plenty of views of the water.

5. Visit Yale University

Address: New Haven, CT 06520

Website: https://www.yale.edu/about-yale/visiting

Yale University is another hotspot where there’s no shortage of stuff to do. The prestigious school features castle-like buildings, courtyards, libraries and more. You’ll feel transported somewhere else.

There are also some free museums and other attractions under the Yale banner, like the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art. These buildings also feature the incredible architecture seen throughout the campus.

You can also visit the nearby Center Church or Knights of Colombus Museum —both have free admission.

6. Read a Piece of History at Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lena Anlauf (@lenaanlauf)

Website: https://beinecke.library.yale.edu/

Another attraction near the Yale bubble is the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. It is an engaging experience from the moment you arrive; the building has a commanding, out-of-place appearance — in the best way possible.

Once inside, the magic of the building continues. The windows are made from marble to reduce outside light that can damage the sensitive manuscripts inside. This creates a truly one-of-a-kind feeling. You’ll swear you stepped into someplace magical.

The actual artifacts in the library include a Gutenberg Bible from 1454, John James Audubon’s Birds of America, and the Voynich Manuscript.

Come for the rare books; stay for the incredible atmosphere!

7. Walk, Ride, and Swim at Kent Falls State Park

Address: 462 Kent Cornwall Rd, Kent, CT 06757

Website: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Parks/Kent-Falls-State-Park

If you want to do something outdoorsy, your best bet is Kent Falls State Park. Largely regarded as one of the most beautiful spots in Connecticut, Kent Falls also offers a lot of free fun for everyone.

The park gets its name from the 250-foot falls feeding into the Housatonic River. The falls alone are worth the visit! You can hike to the top or enjoy the water spray at the bottom!

Kent Falls State Park also has a beautiful covered bridge worth viewing. You can find good fishing spots, pedestal grills for cooking, picnic tables, and other amenities.

8. See the Seasonal Offerings from Silverman’s Farm

Address: 451 Sport Hill Rd, Easton, CT 06612

Website: https://www.silvermansfarm.com/

Silverman’s Farm offers a year-round bounty of farm-fresh goods and activities for visitors. In the spring and summer, you can visit the petting zoo, browse beautiful flower arrangements or take a hayride through the apple orchard.

Once August rolls around, the season for apple picking starts. By October, Silverman’s pumpkin patch is bustling with activity. In the winter, you can browse Christmas trees or visit the country store, which magically transforms with decorations to look like Santa’s own workshop.

No matter when you visit, there’s something here to do, see, and, most importantly, eat!

9. Relax at Lighthouse Point Park

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by NY <———😎———> VA (@whatif757)

Address: 2 Lighthouse Rd, New Haven, CT 06512

Website: https://www.newhavenct.gov/Home/Components/FacilityDirectory/FacilityDirectory/16/664

Lighthouse Point Park is one of those hidden shoreline gems. It rarely makes lists of the top CT beaches, but it definitely should! There are plenty of sandy spots to claim, but, if the beach is too crowded, there are also picnic tables and grassy areas nearby. Or, you can head to the other side of the point to find a bench or rock to call your own.

The lighthouse stands near the end of the point, next to a building for weddings and other events, and offers a good backdrop for photos.

Lighthouse Point Park transforms into “Fantasy of Lights” in late November, giving holiday spiriters the chance to drive through many incredible light displays.

It’s worth noting that parking at Lighthouse Point Park may cost a little during peak months. To avoid this, park on one of the roads leading to the entrance instead. It may be a short walk, but you’ll save money!

10. Hike the Sleeping Giant

Address: 200 Mount Carmel Avenue, Hamden, CT 06518

Website: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Parks/Sleeping-Giant-State-Park

Just outside New Haven, in Hamden, is the Sleeping Giant. It’s a silly name for a group of hills that give the appearance of, as the name suggests, a sleeping giant.

While the name is worth the visit alone, Sleeping Giant State Park is also one of Connecticut’s favorite hiking spots. The trails are easy and manicured for hiker comfort. It will take you less than an hour to reach the summit.

At the top, an observation tower provides an amazing vantage point for all of your pictures and horizon gazing. It’s a great hike for any time of the year!

11. Get Your Feet Wet at Hammonasset Beach

Address: 1288 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT 06443

Website: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/State-Parks/Parks/Hammonasset-Beach-State-Park

Hammonasset Beach is the most popular sandy spot in the state. Despite this popularity, you should have no problem finding a place to put down your beach towel because Hammonasset is nearly two miles long!

When you’re done sunning and swimming on the beach, Hammonasset offers facilities for a variety of activities, like camping, fishing, boating, bicycling and more. There’s also a nature center with hands-on programs for younger audiences.

If you’re coming during peak summer months, you may have to pay for parking or find a free spot nearby and walk. In the fall and winter months, Hammonasset Beach is still one of the best places to take a walk in CT.

12. Visit the Museum of Connecticut History

Address: 231 Capitol Ave, Hartford, CT 06106

Website: https://museumofcthistory.org/

The Museum of Connecticut History is 100% free, making it a great destination for a no-cost outing. It’s also located near the State Capitol building, which is worth a look as well!

While the museum is fairly small, it does contain a few notable artifacts from Connecticut’s history, like the 1662 Royal Charter creating the colony of Connecticut and multiple versions of the State’s own Consitution.

If you love Connecticut or just want to learn more about the place you’re visiting, this history museum is a must-see. There are also exhibits that military history enthusiasts will love!

13. Experience Natural Art at Weir Farm National Historical Park

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kerri D’Ambrosio (@kerrold)

Address: 735 Nod Hill Rd, Wilton, CT 06897

Website: https://www.nps.gov/wefa/index.htm

Weir Farm was the summer home of American artist Julian Alden Weir. It was the inspiration for Weir’s Impressionist artwork (along with paintings by other famous American artists). Its role in the rise of American Impressionist painting makes it a significant landmark for artists.

Today, you can explore the grounds and even tour the Weir house, gaining a full appreciation for why this site was home to so much incredible artwork.

You can even grab some free art supplies (available to visitors) and see what masterpieces you can create!

14. Window Shop on Greenwich Avenue

Address: Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT 06830

Website: https://business.greenwichchamber.com/list/ql/shopping-specialty-retail-23

California has Rodeo Drive. Connecticut has Greenwich Avenue. This stretch of road and sidewalk is littered with stores from some of the most recognizable luxury brands out there.

Despite the high-end boutiques and department stores on either side, Greenwich Avenue maintains the charming atmosphere of most colonial towns in Connecticut.

It’s a really nice place to walk around, window shop, and watch people spend fortunes on luxury clothing and twinkling jewelry. Bring some coffee or snacks from home and park yourself on a bench to enjoy the full Greenwich Ave experience!

15. See Something Medieval at Hubbard Park

Address: 999 W Main St, Meriden, CT 06451

Website: https://www.meridenct.gov/city-services/parks-and-recreation/hubbard-park/

In the center of Meriden’s Hubbard Park is a stone structure that looks straight out of the Dark Ages. While King Arthur never visited Connecticut, Walter Hubbard did. He had the tower (named Castle Craig) and park constructed in the 20th century, donating both to the town of Meriden.

There are several trails to reach Castle Craig. You can choose what trail difficulty to use for hiking to the ancient-looking fort.

Aside from Castle Craig, Hubbard Park has all of the beauty, open space, and amenities you can expect from one of the best Connecticut parks. In the winter, you can drive through the park and see several wire statues lit up in festive string lights.

16. Take a Free Trip to the Casino

Address: 350 Trolley Line Blvd, Mashantucket, CT 06338

Website: https://www.foxwoods.com/

Going to a casino seems counterproductive when you’re trying to plan a free outing. However, both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun offer some free activities to visitors. And, it doesn’t cost anything to walk in the door!

Both locations (which are conveniently located next to one another) routinely offer free concerts and shows. You can also wander through the casinos and see incredible glass sculptures, artwork, architecture, and more.

Plus, there are stores you can window shop and plenty of people-watching to be had! Who says the house always has to win?

17. Spot Wildlife at the Connecticut Audobon Society

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Connecticut Audubon Society (@ctaudubon)

Website: https://www.ctaudubon.org/

The Connecticut Audobon Society’s mission is to conserve natural habitats for birds and other animals in CT. Over the years, the Audobon Society has acquired land across the state for these conservation purposes and “science-based education and advocacy.”

In total, there are 8 Audobon centers across the state and several more bird sanctuaries, meaning there’s likely a site nearby where you can visit.

Most Audubon locations offer easy walking trails with ample birdwatching possibilities. Pay attention to the Audobon Society’s monthly calendar. There are always events available to learn about bird conservation in CT and take part in other unique experiences.

18. Watch a Live Farm in Action at the UConn Animal Barn

Address: 17 Manter Rd, Storrs, CT 06269

Website: https://animalscience.cahnr.uconn.edu/visit-us/animal-barns/

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Animal Science contains several barns and other facilities with live animals. The UConn Animal Barn invites people to visit and see the day-to-day activities at the farm.

It’s important to note that this is not a petting zoo, nor can you feed any of the animals. That said, you may be able to catch cows being milked via the robotic Voluntary Milking System. You can also see beef cows, sheep, horses, and other animals.

On your way out, don’t forget to stop at the UConn Dairy Bar for ice cream. Many visitors come just for the frozen confections.

19. Enjoy Spectacular Views at Harkness Memorial State Park

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Harkness Memorial State Park (@harknesspark)

Address: 275 Great Neck Rd, Waterford, CT 06385

Website: https://www.harkness.org/

Harkness Memorial State Park contains the former summer home of the Harkness family. The estate is truly extravagant and has many gardens and quiet, private spaces that are open to the public.

While you can tour or participate in various events inside the estate’s residence, it is the surrounding areas and views that make the Harkness Memorial State Park a must-visit. The water-side location in Waterford provides panoramic views of Long Island Sound and the shoreline.

It’s a truly unique experience and a great location to spend a day outside!

20. Create Your Own Free Connecticut Adventure!

Have you ever heard the saying, “It’s about the journey, not the destination?” If you need something free to do in Connecticut, you can always hop in the car and make your own adventure.

Connecticut has lots of winding backroads and quaint, hidden-gem towns across the state. Follow a route at random or plan a journey to a town you’ve never been to, and see what happens.

Who knows where you’ll end up or what attractions there will be along the way, but we guarantee you’ll have fun! You may even discover your new favorite destination in CT.
